#Herbal #TurmericExtract Procresses a Kidney Protective Effects on Renal Toxicity, Researchers Discover

By Kyle J. Norton

Renal toxicity or nephrotoxicity in most cases is toxicity in the kidneys caused by toxic chemicals and medications.

The kidneys, a pair of bean-shaped organs on either side of your spine are the second detoxed organ after liver by removing wastes or toxins in the blood come from the normal breakdown of active muscle and from the food you eat.

Most common symptoms of renal toxicity may cause reduced kidney function in eliminating toxins, leading to a reduced amount of urine. swelling of your legs, ankles, and feet from the retention of fluids.
In a serious case, the condition can also result in unexplained shortness of breath. excessive drowsiness or fatigue. persistent nausea. confusion. pain or pressure in your chest.
Kidney diseases can be classified into 2 types
* Acute kidney disease is a sudden episode of kidney failure or kidney damage associated with reduced kidney function in keeping the right balance of fluid in the body, that lasts a few hours or a few days.

* Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a condition of kidney damage, leading to a decreased level of kidney function that lasts more than three months.

Depending on the severity of kidney damage, kidney disease can range from mild to severe, including kidney failure.

Conventionally, most cases of renal toxicity are treated with cisplatin often associated with an acute kidney injury. Long-term intake of the aforementioned drugs has been found to elevate the risk of nausea and vomiting, kidney toxicity, hearing loss, ringing in the ears, particularly blood abnormalities of low levels of magnesium, calcium, and potassium.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, and wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
On finding a natural compound for the treatment of renal toxicity scientists investigated the nephroprotective effect of essential oils from Nigeria ginger and turmeric rhizomes in cadmium-treated rats.

Injection of essential oils from ginger and turmeric rhizomes exerted a significant anti-inflammatory effect by preventing alterations of renal function markers induced by cadmium.

Furthermore, the combination also inhibited the levels of cytokines such as IL-6, IL-10, and TNF-Alpha) levels in Cd-treated rats.

Moreover, renal adenosine deaminase (ADA) activity. in Cd-treated rats was also decreased by the injection of the combined essential oils from ginger and turmeric rhizome.

Based on the finding, researchers write in the final report, "inhibition of ADA activity and modulation of inflammatory cytokines could be suggested as the possible mechanism of action by which essential oils from ginger and turmeric rhizomes exert their nephroprotective activities".

Furthermore, 1,350 participants selected for the study were randomly divided into either a curry intake group with the consumption of a curry dish more than once a month over the previous year, or a non-curry intake group (n = 747), researchers found that according to the heavy metal analysis, the curry intake group showed significantly lower heavy metal blood concentrations (Pb, Hg, and Cd).
However, the levels of heavy metals in the patients with hypertension were significantly lower in the curry intake group compared to the non-hypertension group.

The levels of blood concentrations of heavy metals induced toxicity associated with the induction of hypertension were significantly lower compared to the placebo.

In other words, turmeric has a potential effect on reducing renal toxicity.

In order to obtain more information about turmeric detoxed activity, researchers examined the protective effect of turmeric extract against doxorubicin (DOX)-induced cardiac toxicity in rats.

According to the tested assays, turmeric extract exerted multiple therapeutic activities that ameliorative the effect against DOX-induced nephrosis.

Additionally, turmeric extract inhibited the DOX-induced increase in plasma creatine kinase (CK) associated with the increased risk of kidney disease.

Dr. Mohamad RH, the lead scientist said, "The present findings conclude that the turmeric extract has multiple therapeutic activities that block the renal.....toxicities".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed with a high amount of bioactive compound curcumin may be considered a supplement for the prevention of kidney toxicity, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Low Dose of #CoffeeCaffeine Modulates the #OxidativeStress and #Anxiety in Menopause, Researchers Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Menopause is a natural and biological progression of women at a certain age. The reduced hormone levels of the inaction of ovaries induced menstruation stop and a set of symptoms.

Coffee, second to green tea, is a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, made from roast beans from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

A study conducted by a renowned institute suggested that coffee and coffee caffeine may have a potential effect in reducing the severity of some menopause symptoms and elevation of others.

In a cross-sectional survey conducted using the Menopause Health Questionnaire, completed by 2,507 consecutive women with menopausal concerns at the Women's Health Clinic at Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN) between July 25, 2005, and July 25, 2011, caffeine intake in participants showed a greater positive effect in the expression of the vasomotor symptom of menopause women in compared to non-drinkers group.

Other, in a cross-sectional study of a community-based sample of 243 women with vasomotor symptoms to evaluate the menopause symptoms of hot flashes (HF) and night sweats (NS) in symptomatic middle-aged women, intake of coffee showed elevated symptoms of hot flashes (HF) and night sweats (NS) in compared to non-drinkers.

And caffeine intake also is found as one of the predictors in exhibited both hot flashes (HF) and night sweats (NS) in the same study group.

But in the animal model, according to the behavioral tests and oxidative stress parameters in ovariectomized mice, caffeine intake also showed a significant in reduced symptoms of anxiety induced by oxidative stress.

Administration of low doses of caffeine, for a short period of time, may be a new therapeutic approach to modulate the oxidative stress and anxiety in menopause, the "Iuliu Hatieganu" University of Medicine and Pharmacy postulated.

Taking all together, coffee and coffee caffeine may have a strong effect in reduced and elevated menopause symptoms, in types depending manner.

#Phytochemical #Alliin Protects the Liver Against #LiverCancer By Inhibiting the Cytotoxicity of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) in Vivos

By Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest detoxed internal organ with a function to filter out blood coming from the intestines before passing them to other parts of the body,

Additionally, the liver also produces cholesterol to aid digestion, production of steroid hormones, vitamin D and building strong cell membranes.

Liver cancer is a chronic condition caused by irregular cell growth due to the alternation of liver cell DNA.

Compared to normal liver cells growth which is stopped after a certain stage of division, liver cancer cells can grow indefinitely to form a tumor, leading to reduced function of the liver.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2019, about 42,030 new cases (29,480 in men and 12,550 in women) will be diagnosed.

Primary liver cancer and intrahepatic bile duct cancer also cause the death of 31,780 people (21,600 men and 10,180 women) in 2019.

In the Western world, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD), a spectrum of hepatic disorders induced by obesity and metabolic syndrome, is a recognized risk factor for liver cancer.

Dr. György Baffy at the Harvard Medical School wrote, "Hepatocellular cancer (HCC) is the fifth most prevalent cancer worldwide and the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a spectrum of hepatic disorders associated with obesity and metabolic syndrome, is a recognized risk factor for HCC".

And, "NAFLD that is advanced to cirrhosis carries the highest risk for HCC, but there is an increasing concern that NAFLD-associated HCC may also occur in the non-cirrhotic liver".

Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide,. a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belonging to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of liver cancer, researchers examined the bioactive compound alliin isolated from garlic in an animal model, against liver cell DNA damage.
The study included rats induced liver cancer by N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) were treated by administration of garlic powders for 2 weeks (5% of the diet).

According to the liver comet assay, injection of different garlic powders demonstrated a significant liver protective effect by a 35-60% reduction in DNA damage induced by N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) in rat liver.

Additional injection of alliin content of the garlic powder showed a strongly proportional decrease in NDMA induced DNA alteration.

Three garlic powders with or without alliin also protected the liver cell against DNA damage induced by aflatoxin B1 in the liver.

However, these decreases were not correlated to the allicin content of the garlic powders.

In other words, additional alliin increased the garlic powder function in the inhibition of liver cancer initiation caused by NDMA while alliin found in the garlic must work with other compounds synergically to induce the same effects.

Taken altogether, alliin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of liver cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of alliin in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Intake of #Coffee Regularly Is Independently and Negatively Associated with #PrimarySclerosingCholangitis, Researchers Find

By Kyle J. Norton

A recent study suggested that coffee and caffeine consumption may be associated with a reduced risk of primary sclerosing cholangitis.

Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a medical condition of inflammation and obliterative fibrosis of the bile ducts.

Coffee, a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roast beans from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

In the study of 606 patients with primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC), 480 with primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), and 564 healthy volunteers acted as controls, researchers filed the following results

1. 24% of patients with PSC had never drunk coffee compared to 16% of controls.
2. Patients with PSC also consumed fewer lifetime cups per month and spent a smaller percentage of their lifetime drinking coffee compared to healthy adults.

Based on this information, Dr.Lammert C, the lead author opinionated, coffee consumption is lower among patients with PSC, compared with controls.

Additionally, In patients with PSC, recruited from Oslo University Hospital Rikshospitalet in Norway through 2011, randomly chosen from the Norwegian Bone Marrow Donor Registry (control subjects) of 240 patients with PSC and 245 control subjects also indicated a similar conclusion as follows
1. Compared to control, PSC patients showed a lower daily drinking coffee habit at the time of study and at the age of 18 years observed in men.

2. Every daily coffee drinker at the age of 18 years was independently and negatively associated with PSC.

These results showed that coffee intake may have a profound effect on protection against the development of PSC.

The finding evidence demonstrated that coffee and caffeine consumption may have a significant effect on the attenuated risk of primary sclerosing cholangitis developing, but further large and multi-centers studies are necessary to validate this claim.

#Yoga Reduces the Psychological Symptoms and improves Health-related Quality of Life in Patients with Schizophrenia, According to Studiesa:

By Kyle J. Norton

Yoga lessons may be used in conjunction with other standard treatments in reduced symptoms and hospitalization and improved quality of life, in patients with schizophrenia, the University of Duisburg-Essen suggested.

Schizophrenia is a mental disorder induced by inconsistent or contradictory elements such as the breakdown of certain relations in thought, emotion, and behavior, leading to faulty perception, inappropriate actions, and feelings,...

Yoga, the ancient technique practice for harmonizing external and internal body well beings, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement, and gesture..... has been best known to people in the Western world and some parts of Asia due to health benefits reported by various respectable institutes' research and supported by health advocates.

In the review literature published online by MEDLINE/Pubmed, Scopus, the Cochrane Library, PsycINFO, and IndMED through August 2012 in comparing yoga to usual care or non-pharmacological interventions related to symptoms or quality of life in patients with schizophrenia, 5 studies met the criteria indicated that
* There was no evidence found compared to usual care on positive symptoms and improved social function in short-term valuation
* Yoga group expressed moderate evidence of short-term effects on quality of life compared to usual care 3. Only one study showed insignificantly adverse events.

The findings suggested that yoga intervention may have a moderated effect in reduced symptoms and other aspects of patients with schizophrenia without mentioning the effects of long-term yoga participation.

Truly, yoga's slow breathing and meditation-induced calmness to the central nervous system reduced the production of stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol, and the precursor hormone DHEA in exaggerated stress responses in initiated mental health expression of anxiety and depression.

The fluctuation of hormone imbalance can cause mixed symptoms.

Furthermore, yoga application also reconnected and re-balanced the mind and body in inducing a state of relaxation in the central nervous system thus ameliorating neurons in transmitting faulty chemistry in facilitated wrongly emotional responses.

Moreover, by reconnecting the mind and the emotional response, yoga improves awareness by bringing back the presence and dealing with the positive ways through increasing awareness of the surroundings, such as paying attention to reality and moving away from the delusional past, thus increasing acceptance and adaptability to the new change for better recovery.

Most importantly, yoga mindfulness also promoted the sense of security of mental illness patients, through the patient's sense of well beings and satisfaction with his/her life circumstances in an environment that is least restrictive, safest, and homely as well as a person's health status.

Easier said than done, yoga intervention may also have the potential in restored balance and mental connection into tackling psychosomatic problems and psychiatric disorders. However, according to some researchers, it is often difficult to motivate a mental illness person to feel comfortable in doing yoga practices, but with the patience of the caregivers in gentle persuasion, as time progressed, most patients might slowly enjoy the exercise and eager to carry on.

The above differentiation was supported by the literature review to assess the effectiveness of yoga as a complementary treatment on general psychopathology, positive and negative symptoms, and health-related quality of life (HRQL) for people with schizophrenia at the University Psychiatric Centre Katholieke Universiteit Leuven.

According to the results of the study, although the information was limited, the yoga group demonstrated a strong effect in reduced general psychopathology and positive and negative symptoms and yoga lessons improved the health-related quality of life in those antipsychotic-stabilized patients with schizophrenia and also promoted the sense of security of the mental illness patients,

And, a randomized study of changes in state anxiety, psychological stress, and subjective well-being after single sessions of yoga and aerobic exercise compared with a control condition by the Catholic University Leuven.

After taking into account other confounders, researchers found that the state of anxiety significantly decreased after single sessions of yoga and aerobic exercise in individuals with schizophrenia compared to control.

Patients who participated in a single class of yoga or aerobic exercise also showed decreased psychological stress and increased subjective well-being without inducing a statistically significant difference in both yoga and aerobic exercise groups.

With all the information collected, there is no doubt that yoga lessons in both short and long term may have a profound and strong effect on reducing psychological symptoms and improved health-related quality of life in patients with schizophrenia:

#Herbal #Turmeric's #Curcumaaromaticaoil Inhibits the Renal Damage by Regulating #InflammatotyCytokines and Cell's Apoptosis

By Kyle J. Norton

Renal protection is strategies that protect the kidney against injury or damage. In other words, renal protection is a process that maintains the function of the kidneys.

Kidneys, a pair of bean-shaped organ in the human body only filters out blood but also balances body fluids by eliminating them and removing them through urinary secretion.

Depending on the severity of renal damage, patients may experience symptoms of decreased urine output, and fluid retention, that lead to swelling in the legs, ankles, or feet, fatigue, nausea, and physical weakness

In severe cases, patients may also have symptoms of shortness of breath, confusion, and irregular heartbeat.

The worse cases of kidney damage can lead to renal failure, a condition that induces wastes and toxins to accumulate in the blood. In this stage, dialysis and kidney transplant are the only options.

Kidney damage can be classified into 4 different stages
* Stage 1 with normal or high GFR (GFR > 90 mL/min). In this stage of kidney patients are asymptomatic.

* Stage 2 Mild CKD (GFR = 60-89 mL/min), Patients in this stage also experience no symptoms.

*Stage 3A Moderate CKD (GFR = 45-59 mL/min) and 3B moderate CKD (GFR = 30-44 mL/min.
Most patients are asymptomatic. However, some patients may experience symptoms of mild swelling in the hands and feet, back pain, and urinating more or less than normal.

* Stage 4 CKD (GFR = 15-30 mL/min). Most patients in this stage experience more severe symptoms of swelling in the hands and feet, back pain, and urinating more or less than normal, accompanied by other health problems associated with weakened kidney function

* Stage 5 EndStage CKD (GFR <15 mL/min). Patients at this advanced stage are very close to renal failure or renal failure. Symptoms are getting worse.

Where eGFR is short for estimated glomerular filtration rate.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

In the urgency to find a potential compound with a kidney protective effect against the side effects of Cisplatin, researchers investigated the protective effect and mechanism of tetrahydrocurcumin on cisplatin-induced kidney damage.

The study included selected rats treated by Tetrahydrocurcumin orally every day at a dose of 80 mg/kg body weight for ten days, and a single dose of cisplatin was administered intraperitoneally (7.5 mg/kg body weight) in 0.9 % saline on day four.

According to the tested assays, Cisplatin-induced renal cell damage was significantly reduced by tetrahydrocurcumin treatment.

Tetrahydrocurcumin also suppressed the cisplatin-treated rat in inducing overexpression of the creatinine clearance levels, an indication of kidney dysfunction.

Proinflammatory protein associated with increased oxidative stress in the kidney caused by cancer medicine was also inhibited by tetrahydrocurcumin administration during the experiment.

After taking into account co and confounders, the researcher wrote, "collectively provide therapeutic evidence that tetrahydrocurcumin ameliorates renal damage by regulating inflammation and apoptosis".

In order to reveal more information about turmeric renal protective activity, researchers evaluated the intervening effects of Curcuma aromatica oil on renal interstitial fibrosis rats induced by unilateral ureteral obstruction.

The study included infected rats treated with Curcuma aromatica oil for 3, 7, 14, and 28 days.
According to the Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)-based metabonomics combined with clinical chemistry and histopathology examination, Curcuma aromatica oil demonstrated strong kidney protection by inhibiting some metabolic pathways associated with the onset of renal interstitial fibrosis, including lipids metabolism, glycolysis, and methylamine metabolism,

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the protection of kidneys, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Cucumber Extract Exhibits Anti #Osteoarthritis Activities through its Function as Pro-inflammatory Mediators, Researchers Find

By Kyle J. Norton

Osteoarthritis (OA) is an inflammatory disease mostly caused by work-related occupations and working environments, affecting the muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments, and nerves, over time.
The disease is most prevalent in the US. Approximately 10% of men and 13% of women over the age of 60 years suffer from the condition.

In the general population, OA affects over 25 million people in the United States alone.

And, the numbers are increasing at an alarming rate due to the aging of the population and the obesity epidemic.

The most common symptoms of OA include pain in the joint(s), reduced movement of the joint(s), joint(s) tenderness, and stiffness, particularly, the loss of flexibility and bone spurs.

If you have experienced some of the symptoms that do not get better in a short period of time, you may have OA.

Believe it or not, patients with OA are associated with the complications of a rapid, complete breakdown of cartilage, bone death (osteonecrosis), and stress fractures.

As of today, there is no cure for the condition, Treatment of OA conventionally are focusing on reducing the pain and progression of the disease and improving quality of life.

If you are taking medication for the treatment of OA, please make sure that you know all the side effects
Prolonged use of Acetaminophen has been found to cause liver damage.

In the prevention and management of OA, some researchers suggested
* Prevented recurrent injury to damaged menisci
The meniscus is an important issue because of its function in shock absorption and load distribution in the healthy knee joint(111). A meniscal tear can lead to knee osteoarthritis (OA), but knee OA can also lead to a spontaneous breakdown of the meniscal tear and damage to the meniscal structure(112). Meniscus damage or recurrent injury might be considered a signifying feature of incipient OA in middle-aged and elderly people(113).

*. Take precautions if your occupation is at increased risk of osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most important diseases as it frequently affects the active age group of the population contributing to the loss of working hours and of disability(114)(115)(117). Compressive, torsional, pulling and angular movements common in certain occupations or sports may result in injuries of soft tissue, thus increasing the development of OA(116).

* Muscle strengthening and aerobic exercises
Enhanced muscle strengthening with neuromuscular electrical stimulation(118), aerobic exercises(119), and exercise(220) are effective in reducing pain and improving physical function in patients with mild to moderate OA of the knee(220).

* Maintain a healthy weight(117)
Increased BMI and obesity are associated with more severe cartilage degeneration(121)(123) as assessed by both morphological and quantitative MRI measurements(122).

*Avoid dehydration
Dehydration has been shown to reduce the mobility of collagen amino acid residues and carbon sugar ring structures in glycosaminoglycans, according to the University of Michigan(124) that may affect the functions of cartilage and induce the risk of OA(125), but dehydration effects are reversible, through the restoration of molecular structure and mobility(124).

* Avoid intake of inflammatory foods
Loading up on junk foods and fast foods contains a high amount of trans fat that increases the risk of inflammation(126) exhibits pro-inflammatory effects(127) and causes osteoarthritis (OA)(128). Red meat, eggs, and wheat products all contain a high amount of arachidonic acid, too much arachidonic acid may worsen the inflammation process(129), etc.

* Eat your fruits and vegetables
Fruits and vegetables containing high amounts of nutrients and antioxidants (130), can enhance the immune defense system(131)within the joint through direct influences of transferrin performance for reduction of inflammation(131)(132) as well as suppressing free radicals and the chain of free radicals reaction cause of elevating the swelling and promoting degeneration(133)(134).

* Replace regular beverages with green tea
Epigallocatechin-3-gallate, a green tea polyphenol(135)(136), was found to be effective in reducing inflammatory cytokines induced inflammatory diseases(137)(138).

The cucumber plant is a species of Cucumis Sativus, belongings to the family Cucurbitaceae and native to Western Asia. It is a creeping vine with roots in the ground and grows up with the support of frames.

On finding a natural compound for the treatment of osteoarthritis (OA), age-related disease researchers compared the efficacy of Q-Actin™, an aqueous extract of Cucumis sativus (cucumber; CSE) against GC in the management of moderate knee OA.

The randomized double-blind, parallel-group clinical trial included 122 patients (56 males and 66 females) aged between 40 and 75 years with moderate knee OA and took place in three different centers

Participants were divided evenly into 2 groups (n= 61) the GC group received orally the generally prescribed dose of 1,350 mg of GC twice daily and the CSE group received orally 10 mg twice daily of CSE in a 180-day intervention.

According to the results from the Western Ontario McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), the WOMAC score of the CSE group decreased by 22.44% and 70.29% on Days 30 and 180, respectively, compared to 14.80% and 32.81% decrease in the GC group.

Similarly, the GC also showed a decrease in pain score compared to the CSE group without inducing any adverse effect.

Based on the finding, researchers said, "The use of 10 mg CSE, twice daily, was effective in reducing pain related to moderate knee OA and can be potentially used in the management of knee pain, stiffness, and physical functions related to OA".

In order to reveal additional information about the anti-inflammatory properties of cucumber, researchers examined the antioxidant effect on cucurbitacins (Cub), a major compound found in the fruit.

Compared to grape-seed extract, wheat, alfalfa, and ginkgo biloba extracts, CuB showed a broad spectrum radical-scavenging capacity.

CuB exerted a similar activity to that of the aforementioned study by inhibiting the expression of TNF in macrophages and lymphocytes and the expression of pro-inflammatory mediators such as nitric-oxide synthase-2 and cyclooxygenase-2.

Collectively, Dr. Adebowale Bernard Saba, the lead scientist wrote," It is general knowledge among researchers working with natural medicinal products that any of the cucurbitacins have the attributes or the potential to become fully patented as anti-inflammatory...drug".

Taken altogether, cucumber processed abundantly amount of CuB may be used for the treatment of osteoarthritis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of CuB in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
