#Coffee and Coffee #Caffeine are Associated with an Reduced Risk of #Cancers But #EsophagealCancer, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Intake of coffee regularly may have a profound effect in reduced risk of cancers, a recent study proposed.
Cancer is a group of diseases characterized by irregular cell growth in any tissue and organ in the body.

Coffee, becoming a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roast beans from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

According to the joint study led by the Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca, the consumption of healthy foods, particularly coffee rich in polyphenols might have a substantial influence in reducing the prevalence of cancer incidence.

Coffee extract with high chlorogenic acids (CGAs) exhibited beneficial biological effects in ameliorating the risk of cancer through anti-inflammatory activity and anti-carcinogenic activity.

In Ras-dependent breast cancer cell line MDA-MB-231, CGAs also displayed a molecular basis of the activity and chemoprotective in the induction of cell apoptosis.

Furthermore, in the review of literature in an expression of the association between total, caffeinated, and decaffeinated coffee consumption and melanoma risk in a dose-response meta-analysis on prospective cohort studies by searching the database of PubMed and Embase, researchers indicated, seven studies eligible for meta-analysis, comprised 1,418,779 participants and 9211 melanoma cases. caffeine attenuated melanoma risk with a linear dose-response association between total coffee consumption.

The prevalence risk of melanoma is reduced by 3% for an additional cup of coffee intake per day. Dr. Micek A, the lead author said, "Coffee intake may be inversely associated with the incidence of melanoma".

In further demonstrated coffee and coffee caffeine ameliorated risk of cancer, the Cox proportional hazards regression was used to estimate multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (HR) for coffee consumption associated with death from all cancers combined and from specific cancer types among 922,896 Cancer with 1982 as a baseline, researchers at joint study lead by the American Cancer Society found that only smokers showed a non-linear association between coffee consumption and all-cancer death but not in never smokers.

Among non-smokers, drinking 2 cups/day or more showed a significant inverse associated with death from colorectal, head and neck, and female breast cancers, but positively associated with esophageal cancer death.

Taking all together, coffee and coffee caffeine have a profound effect in reducing the risk of many types of cancer, except esophageal cancer which may be attributed to the long-term themo effect of hot beverage intake.

#Phytochemical #Alliin Found in Aqueous Garlic Powder Extract Inhibits the Onset of #Hypertension in Vivos

By Kyle J. Norton

High blood pressure, is a condition characterized by elevated blood pressure in the arteries. Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood.
In other words, the heart has to work harder to circulate blood to the body's needs in high blood pressure patients. Long-term elevated blood pressure raises the pressure of the heart, leading to damage to the heart tissue and facilitating the risk of cardiovascular disease.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, approximately 54% of adults in the US are living with high blood pressure and half of them have an uncontrol condition.

Believe it or not, in the US, high blood pressure is a major cause of heart disease and stroke and a leading cause of death.

Many factors have been found to increase the risk of high blood pressure, including, tobacco or excessive alcohol drinking, chronic medical conditions such as kidney disease, diabetes, and sleep apnea.

Some researchers suggested that the promotion of the Western diet with high consumption of salt may have a strong effect on increasing the prevalence of high blood pressure over the past few decades.

Dr. the lead scientist wrote, "Over the past century, salt has been the subject of intense scientific research related to blood pressure elevation and cardiovascular mortalities".

And, "The World Health Organization (WHO) strongly recommended reducing dietary salt intake as one of the top priority actions to tackle the global non-communicable disease crisis and has urged member nations to take action to reduce population-wide dietary salt intake to decrease the number of deaths from hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and stroke".

In other words, by following a healthy diet and moderate exercise, high blood pressure is preventable.

Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide,. a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belonging to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.

In finding a natural compound for the treatment of hypertension, researchers examined the effect of Lichtwer garlic powder (containing 1.3% alliin equivalent to 0.6% allicin)on blood pressure.

The study included rats fed either by a 2% high cholesterol diet with and without aqueous garlic powder extract given orally to rats on a daily basis for 6 weeks or control rats fed a normal diet.

Compared to elevated levels of cholesterol in the rat fed with a cholesterol diet without garlic extract, rats fed with a high-cholesterol diet mixed with garlic powder showed a significant reduction in their serum cholesterol levels.

The high blood pressure of rats induced by a cholesterol diet was also inhibited by garlic powder.

In other words, the blood pressure of the animals receiving garlic powder and high cholesterol diet was significantly lower as compared to other groups without affecting levels of glucose and protein.

Based on the results, researchers after taking other factors into account wrote, " garlic is beneficial in reducing...systolic blood pressure in hypercholesterolemic rats".

And, "Our experimental results show that garlic may beneficially affect two risk factors for... and hypertension".

Moreover, the Tel Aviv University study in the comparison of the effects of a new stable synthetic compound produced by a chemical reaction between allicin and the angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor captopril and alliin and captopril suggested CPSSA in high doses significantly decreased blood pressure, triglycerides, and homocysteine concentrations compared to alliin with a slight effect on SBP and Captopril (50mg/(kg day)) only improved blood pressure and homocysteine.

More precisely, Dr. Oron-Herman M, the lead scientist wrote, "The combined molecule CPSSA integrates the anti-hypertensive, lipid-lowering, and homocysteine-reducing effects of both allicin and captopril, making it a potential cardiovascular protective agent".

Taken altogether, alliin may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of hypertension, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of alliin in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Herbal #Turmeric Inhibits the Symptoms and Improves Quality of Life in #Osteoarthritis Patients, According to Clincal Trials

By Kyle J. Norton

Osteoarthritis (OA) one of the most common forms of arthritis that affects over 25 25 million people in the United States is a chronic inflammatory disease of the joints due to wear and tear over time.

The characteristics of osteoarthritis are aching pain, stiffness, or difficulty in moving the joint or joints. The pain usually gets worse in a change of weather, at night, and in advanced diseases, the pain can occur even at rest.

Conventionally, treatment of osteoarthritis (OA) focuses on pain relief and improved physical function through pharmacological, nonpharmacological, and surgical treatments.

The most common risk factors associated with the onset of OA include genetic preposition, being overweight or obese, previous joint injury, and repetitive movements or injuries to joints (such as a fracture, surgery, or ligament tears).

However, most people with some of the risk factors have never developed the disease.

Dr. Sally Thomas, the lead scientist in the treatment of OA patients wrote, "As current treatment options in OA are very limited, OA patients would benefit greatly from some ability to self-manage their condition".

And, "For overweight/obese patients, weight reduction, ideally incorporating exercise, is paramount. The association between metabolic syndrome, type-2 diabetes, and OA risk or progression may partly explain the apparent benefit of dietary-lipid modification resulting from increased consumption of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids from oily fish/fish oil supplements. A strong association between OA and raised serum cholesterol together with clinical effects in statin users suggests a potential benefit of reduction of cholesterol by dietary means".

In other words, depending on the causes, patients may be recommended to a specific treatment.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, and wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of osteoarthritis (OA), researchers examined the Curene®, a bioavailable formulation of turmeric anti-inflammatory properties.

The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel group included 50 subjects aged between 40 and 75 years who were suffering from unilateral or bilateral OA of the knee for greater than 3 months according to American College of Rheumatology (ACR) criteria.

The treatment group received 500mg Curene® once daily and the other group received a placebo.

According to the results from the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) score, Curene® treated group showed a statistically significant reduction of pain score compared to the placebo without inducing any adverse effects.

In other words, Curene® 500mg not only reduced pain, and stiffness but also improved physical functioning in subjects suffering from knee OA.

In order to reveal more information on turmeric anti-OA activity, researchers investigated LI73014F2 a novel composition prepared from extracts of Terminalia chebula fruit, Curcuma longa rhizome, and Boswellia serrata gum resin in the inhibition of 5-Lipoxygenase (5-LOX).

Where activated enzyme 5-Lipoxygenase (5-LOX), has been found to induce pain in patients with OA.

A 90-day randomized, placebo-controlled double-blind study included 105 participants divided into three groups: placebo (n = 35), 200 mg/day of LI73014F2 (n = 35), and 400 mg/day of LI73014F2 (n = 35).

According to the results from tested assays obtained from the baseline (day 0) and on day 14 ± 3, 30 ± 3, 60 ± 3, and at the end of the study (day 90 ± 3), all doses of LI73014F2 conferred a strong effect in pain relief, improved physical function, and quality of life in OA patients, compared to the baseline.

Dr. Karlapudi V, the lead scientist said, "preclinical and clinical data together strongly suggest that the herbal formulation LI73014F2 is a safe and effective intervention for management of joint discomfort, demonstrating efficacy as early as 14 days".

Based on the findings, turmeric processed a high amount of bioactive curcumin used alone or combined with other herbal medicines may be considered supplements for the treatment of osteoarthritis (OA), pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Herbal #Bilberry's #Anthocyanin-Enhanced Extracts Reduce the Risk of Vascular Disease in Vivos, Scientists Suggest

By Kyle J. Norton

Vasoprotection is the action in which substances including herbal and natural remedies are used to protect the integrity of the blood vessels.

Blood vessels are the tubular structure including a vein, artery, or capillary which carries the blood through the tissues and organs pumped by the heart.

There are 3 main types of blood vessel
* Arteries that deliver oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the tissues and organs of the body. Damage of arteries is found to induce coronary artery disease caused by narrowing or blockage of the coronary arteries due to plaques accumulated on the arterial wall.

* Veins that carry blood toward the heart. Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is a common condition associated with a disease of the veins that affects up to 20 percent of adults.

* Capillaries (the smallest blood vessels) have been found to induce systemic capillary leak syndrome (SCLS) is a rare acquired disorder.

Some researchers suggested that following a healthy diet accompanied by moderate exercise may have a strong impact on the blood vessels' integrity.

Dr. Hanrui Zhang said, "Accumulating evidence suggests that inflammatory cytokine tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNFα) plays a pivotal role in the dysregulation of macrovascular and microvascular function".

And, "Dietary supplements and exercise training decrease TNFαproduction and ameliorate TNFα-mediated pathological changes in vasculature. Thus, the inhibitory effects of dietary supplements and physical exercise on TNFα production and TNFα signaling may contribute to their vasoprotective properties".

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrub in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant berry has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

In finding a natural ingredient that processes vasoactive and vasoprotective properties, researchers examined the effects of anthocyanin-rich extracts prepared from chokeberry (Ck), bilberry (B), or elderberry (E). on reactive oxygen species (ROS) play a critical role in the impairment of nitric oxide-mediated vascular functions.

In Coronary arterial rings isolated from 64 pigs and incubated in sterile tissue culture media overnight, Ck and B, but not E, produced dose- and endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation.

In coronary vascular tone, endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation by other factors was not affected by exposure of rings to any extract at 0.05 mg total anthocyanins per liter for 5 or 30 min.

Furthermore, anthocyanin-enhanced extracts produce endothelium-dependent relaxation in porcine coronary arteries.

However, high doses of B exerted a significant protective effect against the alternation of coronary arteries induced by ROS with no effect on vasorelaxation to endogenous or exogenous NO.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "These results suggest that such extracts could have significant beneficial effects in vascular disease".

Taken altogether, bilberry-processed abundantly bioactive compound anthocyanin may be considered a functioning remedy for the prevention and treatment of vascular disease, pending the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Greentea's #Catechins Inhibit the Risk of Diseases Associated with #ChronicInflammation, Researchers Find

By Kyle J. Norton

The good news for people with chronic inflammatory diseases, green tea polyphenols (GrTPs) is found to reduce the risk and progression of the diseases through the exhibition of potent antioxidants in regulating vital signaling pathways involved in the production of inflammatory cytokines. a renowned institute study suggested

Green tea, a precious drink processes a number of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world. However, as yin in nature herbal medicine, or food, long term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, inducing "excessive yin syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome" including weakened immunity and painful case of GERD,... according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory. Adding a slice of ginger to each drink will attenuate the expression.

Chronic inflammation diseases are medical conditions caused by the overreaction of the immune system in protection against microbial invasion and damage to organs due to injury, affecting the tissue healing process, which can lead to life-long debilitation and loss of tissue function, and organ failure.

According to the University of Kentucky Medical Center, green tea phytochemical polyphenols protected our body against inflammation through actions in intercepted the surge of inflammatory markers like cytokines and the production of cyclooxygenase-2 in innate anti-inflammatory cytokines.

In chronic Inflammatory Bowel Disease patients, catechin isolated from green tea enhanced the antioxidant production such as glutathione peroxidases (GPO) and glutathione (GSH), in significantly inhibited excessive oxidative stress through direct or indirect in reducing the oxidative damages to the colon.

Dr. Fan FY, the lead author said, "Catechins can exert their significant anti-inflammatory properties by regulating the activation or deactivation of inflammation-related oxidative stress-related cell signaling pathways( involved proinflammation specifically)".

Particularly, the study also specified the impression of antioxidant catechin in stabilizing the structure of the gastrointestinal micro-ecological environment via promoting the proliferation of beneficial intestinal bacteria and regulating the balance of intestinal flora for induction of relief in patients with IBD.

Furthermore, in a psoriasis mouse model, BALB/c mice topically treated with IMQ for 6 consecutive days, displayed a significant alleviated psoriasiform dermatitis, improved the skin pathological structure by reducing the expression of epidermal PCNA(Base cells) and promoted the expression of caspase-14 involved in inflammation.

In fact, according to the study, the efficacy of Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), for treatment of
psoriasis-like inflammation is the result of the phytochemical functions in anti-inflammatory, immune regulatory, and antioxidant activation.

Taken together, green tea may be used as a protectively functional food in the prevention and treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases, but a regular large amount of injection should be avoided to prevent toxicity.

#Turmeric's #Tetrahydrocurcumin Protects the Kidneys By Inhibiting the Side Effects of #Cisplatin, AQccording to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Renal protection is strategies that protect the kidney against injury or damage. In other words, renal protection is a process that maintains the function of the kidneys.
Kidneys, a pair of bean-shaped organ in the human body only filters out blood but also balances body fluids by eliminating them and removing them through urinary secretion.

Depending on the severity of renal damage, patients may experience symptoms of decreased urine output, and fluid retention, that lead to swelling in the legs, ankles, or feet, fatigue, nausea, and physical weakness

In severe cases, patients may also have symptoms of shortness of breath, confusion, and irregular heartbeat.

The worse cases of kidney damage can lead to renal failure, a condition that induces wastes and toxins to accumulate in the blood. In this stage, dialysis and kidney transplant are the only options.

Kidney damage can be classified into 4 different stages
* Stage 1 with normal or high GFR (GFR > 90 mL/min). In this stage of kidney patients are asymptomatic.

* Stage 2 Mild CKD (GFR = 60-89 mL/min), Patients in this stage also experience no symptoms.

*Stage 3A Moderate CKD (GFR = 45-59 mL/min) and 3B moderate CKD (GFR = 30-44 mL/min.
Most patients are asymptomatic. However, some patients may experience symptoms of mild swelling in the hands and feet, back pain, and urinating more or less than normal.

* Stage 4 CKD (GFR = 15-30 mL/min). Most patients in this stage experience more severe symptoms of swelling in the hands and feet, back pain, and urinating more or less than normal, accompanied by other health problems associated with weakened kidney function

* Stage 5 EndStage CKD (GFR <15 mL/min). Patients at this advanced stage are very close to renal failure or renal failure. Symptoms are getting worse.

Where eGFR is short for estimated glomerular filtration rate.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

In the urgency to find a potential compound with a kidney protective effect against the side effects of Cisplatin, researchers investigated the protective effect and mechanism of tetrahydrocurcumin on cisplatin-induced kidney damage.

The study included selected rats treated with Tetrahydrocurcumin orally every day at a dose of 80 mg/kg body weight for ten days, and a single dose of cisplatin was administered intraperitoneally (7.5 mg/kg body weight) in 0.9 % saline on day four.

According to the tested assays, Cisplatin-induced renal cell damage was significantly reduced by tetrahydrocurcumin treatment.

Tetrahydrocurcumin also suppressed the cisplatin-treated rat in inducing overexpression of the creatinine clearance levels, an indication of kidney dysfunction.

Proinflammatory protein associated with increased oxidative stress in the kidney caused by cancer medicine was also inhibited by tetrahydrocurcumin administration during the experiment.

After taking into account co and confounders, the researcher wrote, "collectively provide therapeutic evidence that tetrahydrocurcumin ameliorates renal damage by regulating inflammation and apoptosis".

In order to reveal more information about turmeric renal protective activity, researchers evaluated the intervening effects of Curcuma aromatica oil on renal interstitial fibrosis rats induced by unilateral ureteral obstruction.

The study included infected rats treated with Curcuma aromatica oil for 3, 7, 14, and 28 days.
According to the Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)-based metabonomics combined with clinical chemistry and histopathology examination, Curcuma aromatica oil demonstrated strong kidney protection by inhibiting some metabolic pathways associated with the onset of renal interstitial fibrosis, including lipids metabolism, glycolysis, and methylamine metabolism,

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the protection of kidneys, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Greentea's #Chafuroside A (CFA) and #Kaempferol Process Anti-#Asthma Activities by Inhibiting the Production of #InflammatoryCytokines, Researchers Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the airway of the lung with recurring symptoms, such as wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing.

Green tea, a precious drink processes a number of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world. However, as yin in nature herbal medicine, or food, long-term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, inducing "excessive yin syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome" including weakened immunity and painful case of GERD,... according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory. But adding a slice of ginger will solve the problem.

According to the joint study led by the Ben Gurion University of the Negev, Kaempferol (3,5,7-trihydroxy-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-4H-1-benzopyran-4-one), a flavonoid found in green tea exhibited anti-oxidant/anti-inflammatory effects against various diseases, including asthma.

The study also demonstrated the function of Kaempferol in reducing oxidative stress through scavenging free radicals and superoxide radicals effects and preserving the activity of various anti-oxidant enzymes in attenuating the production of proinflammatory cytokines.

In fact, evidence from in vitro and in vivo assays postulated that an aqueous fraction of green tea also exerted anti-asthmatic signaling activity in the ovalbumin-induced asthmatic model.

Furthermore, in the study of mice-induced asthma by ovalbumin, an aqueous extract of green tea displayed a potent anti-asthmatic activity by increasing the expression level of tumor necrosis factor-beta, (a protein involved the production of one of the inflammatory cytokines in the acute phase) and interferon-gamma in the displacement of immune function against microbial infection and decreased expression of anti-asthmatic cytokines in the lung.

More importantly, green tea alleviated asthmatic symptoms by increasing the expression of Th1 cell-in regulated the production of interferon-gamma and interleukin (IL)-2, proinflammatory cytokines, and tumor necrosis factor.

Promisingly, another green tea constituent, namely Chafuroside A (CFA), water-soluble flavone C-glycoside, in experimental asthma/chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)-rat model, treatment with Chafuroside A at 0.5mg/kg, 1.0mg/kg could attenuate inflammatory symptoms and ameliorate antigen-induced airway inflammation, respectively.

Dr, Onoue S, the lead author in the above study said, " A self-assembled micellar (SAM) formulation might be an efficacious approach for enhancing the therapeutic potential of CFA for treatment of inflammatory diseases".

Unfortunately, there are few reports suggesting that green tea-induced asthma in tea-sensitive patients, as epigallocatechin gallate induced histamine release through IgE-mediated response.

Taking this together, there is no doubt that green tea may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of asthma, but people with the tea-sensitive syndrome should avoid drinking green tea unless with the approval of a related field specialist.
