Green Tea and Its' Polyphenols (GTPs) May Process Anti-Melanoma and Non-Melanoma #SkinCancers Activities, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Green tea, a precious drink processes a number of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world. However, as yin in nature herbal medicine or food, long-term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, inducing "yin excessive syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome" including weakened immunity and painful case of GERD,... according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory.

Skin cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the tissues of the skin. At the later stage, the cancerous cell may travel a distance away to invade other healthy tissues and organs.

According to statistic, approximately, 87,110 new cases of invasive melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S every year

The evaluation of the green tea effect in overexposure to environmental solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation (290-400 nm) which has been found to increase the risk of the development of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers in mice model showed that oral administration of green tea polyphenols (GTPs) in drinking water or the topical application of EGCG prevents UVB-induced skin tumor development in tested subjects.

Particularly, (-)-Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), the major and most photoprotective polyphenolic component of green tea also exhibited a protective activity against UV in the induction of skin cancer, through induction of immunoregulatory cytokine interleukin (IL) 12 in differentiation of naive T cells into Th1 cells and acted as T cell-stimulating factor in stimulate the growth and function of T cells.

Moreover, interleukin (IL) 12 also demonstrated a significant effect as an antagonist against immunosuppression induced by solar/ultraviolet (UV) radiation by restoring immune responses and also stimulating DNA repair.

Further analysis also indicated that green tea (-)-Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) also inhibited UV in the induction of skin tumors; angiogenetic effect in stimulated production of new blood vessels to
provide nutrients and oxygen for cancer cells proliferation and survival and initiated cytotoxic T lymphocyte cells in induced cancer and infectious and damaged cells apoptosis.

Interestingly, an additional study of green tea polyphenols (GTPs) in prevention of UVB irradiated (80 mJ/cm(2)) 3 times each week for 24 wk in induced skin cancer in mice divided into group consumed water and a group fed with water containing 2 g/L GTPs, showed that group treated with GTPs displayed a significant reduced UVB-induced tumor incidence by 35%, tumor multiplicity by 63%, and tumor growth by 55% in compared to the non-treatment group.

Group treated with GTPs+UVB also demonstrated a reduced expression of the matrix metalloproteinases (MMP)-2 and MMP-9, which are activator associated with progression from benign to advanced cancer and enhanced expression of specific endogenous tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs), tissues inhibitor of MMP in skin tumors in compared to mice treated with UVB alone.

Furthermore, GTPs+UVB group also reduced expressions of CD31 and vascular endothelial growth factor, in the activated development of new blood vessel to nourish skin tumor cells proliferation and site expansion and inhibited expression of proliferating cell nuclear antigen, a key factor in DNA replication and cell cycle regulation in skin cancer in compared to UVB group.

More importantly, mice treated with the GTPs+UVB group also showed more cytotoxic CD8(+) T cells in the tumors compared to the UVB group by exhibiting greater activation of caspase-3 expression in induced apoptosis of the tumor cells.

The information findings suggested a potential and therapeutic effect of green tea and its bioactive polyphenols (GTPs) in attenuating the risk, progression, and treatment of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers.

#Healthyfood #Coffee over 2 cups/day Intake Is Associated with Reduced Risk of Many Types of #LiverDisease, Researchers Find

By Kyle J. Norton

Coffee intake regularly may have a profound effect on the development and progression of liver disease, a recent study suggested.
Coffee, a popular and social beverage worldwide, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roasted beans from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

Liver disease is a class of conditions, including, cirrhosis, scarring of the liver, and inflammatory viral liver disease.....

According to the joint study led by the Fortis Escorts Liver and Digestive Diseases, coffee consumption showed a strong effect in reduced risk of liver diseases caused by Hepatitis B and C, as well as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and alcoholic liver disease.

Among coffee drinkers and non-drinkers, the intake of 2 cups or more of coffee attenuated the risk of fibrosis and cirrhosis in patients diagnosed with precondition of liver disease.

Furthermore, regular intake of coffee also demonstrated a significantly decreased incidence of liver disease in high-risk people, caused by altered liver enzymes (ALT, AST, and GGTP).

In a follow-up study of 766 participants of the Hepatitis, C Antiviral entered a Long-Term Treatment against Cirrhosis (HALT-C) trial with hepatitis C-related bridging fibrosis or cirrhosis on liver biopsy. It failed to achieve a sustained virological response to peginterferon plus ribavirin treatment, researchers found that higher coffee consumption showed a significant in reduced progression of liver disease expressed with a relative risk ratio of 1.11 (0.76-1.61) for less than 1 cup/day; 0.70 (0.48-1.02) for 1 to fewer than 3 cups/day; and 0.47 (0.27-0.85) for 3 or more cups/day (P-trend = 0.0003) compared to non-drinkers.

Regular coffee consumption was associated with lower rates of disease progression also reported in a large prospective study in participants with advanced hepatitis C-related liver disease.

More importantly, the retrospective cross-sectional study on patients with different types of liver disease, including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), hepatitis C virus (HCV), and hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, postulated that drinking over 2 cups of coffee per day showed a lower liver stiffness compared to the non-drinking group.

Interestingly, the effect of coffee in reduced stiffness may also contribute to less risk of fibrosis and inflammation, independent of the disease state.

Taking together, coffee intake may have a potential effect on reduced risk and progression of liver disease, depending on the number of cups of coffee consumed per day.

#Healthyfood #ManukaHoney In the Speeding Up #WoundHealing and #TissueRegeneration, Scientists Find

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a whole food that processes a significant effect in stimulating the regeneration of tissue, some studies suggested.

Tissue regeneration is an act of regrowing non-injured tissues from the remaining tissue. Cells in the non-injured tissues are naturally regenerated over time by replaying the cells that have gone through a certain cycle division and die.

One example is the liver grows back to its original size, though not its original shape.

However, the action totally contrasts with wound healing due to injury, involving the closing up injury site with a scar.

In fact, certain amphibians such as salamanders can regenerate lost limbs; skates, rays, and phylum Annelida, such as worms can even grow into two new, separate worms if they're cut in half.

Humans, on the other hand, process very limited regeneration abilities.

According to the article "Tissue Regeneration" by Bob Hirshon wrote, "By blocking the function of just two proteins, called Rb and ARF, Blau's team was able to make mouse muscle cells regenerate like new cells"

"However, the new muscle cells merged successfully with the old cells only if the researchers turned Rb back on. If they didn't, the new cells grew too much and interfered with the function of the old muscle cells. In other words, they became tumors. And in fact, the function of both Rb and ARF in mammals is to suppress the growth of tumors".

Therefore, much work needed to be done. Dr. Vincent Falanga, the lead author in the study "Stem Cells in Tissue Repair and Regeneration" said, "We should remain hopeful that true regeneration is possible in adult human tissues. Thus far, the evidence has not been very encouraging, except for fetal wound healing" and

"We show Figure 1 to indicate the immense difficulties underlying chronic wounds. Regeneration of the tissue shown in the Figure would be extremely difficult, and would most likely first require complete removal of the non-healing and affected skin".

Honey is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid is considered healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener.

On finding a natural ingredient and whole-food processed the tissue degenerative activity without inducing any side effects, researchers at the Tehran University of Medical Sciences and Khyber Medical University evaluated the effects of Manuka honey in wound healing and epithelial regeneration.

A joint study was conducted by searching the wide spectrum of sources from Google Scholar, PubMed, and Scopus.

Studies included in the investigation all suggested that Manuka honey not only processes anti-carcinogenesis by controlling different molecular processes, and the progression of cancer cells but also engineers tissue regeneration.
The antibacterial property and tissue regeneration were attributed to the bioactive compound methylglyoxal (MGO) found abundantly in the honey.

After taking into account co and confounders, Dr. Niaz K wrote in the final report, "Manuka honey can enhance wound healing and tissue regeneration by their immunomodulatory property".

In order to understand the action of Manuka honey in tissue regeneration, researchers examined the effect of a scaffold electrospun based on polyurethane (PU), grape seed oil, honey, and propolis.

The prepared PU/grapeseed oil and PU/grapeseed oil/honey/propolis scaffold showed enhanced tissue regeneration by maintaining thermal stability and reducing surface roughness compared to the control.

According to the hemolytic assay and cytocompatibility, the electrospun PU/grapeseed oil and PU/grapeseed oil/honey/propolis scaffold promoted tissue regeneration by enhancing the red blood cells (RBC) and human fibroblast cells (HDF).

These results clearly suggested that the newly developed scaffold electrospun might be used as an alternative candidate for bone tissue engineering applications, Dr. Chao CY suggested.

Taken altogether, Manuka honey may be considered a functional food for speeding up wound healing and tissue regeneration, pending the larger and multicenter human study.

#Greentea's #Polyphenols (-)-Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (#EGCG) in Lower Doses Reduce the Risk of #CardiacFibrosis in Induction of Heart Failure

By Kyle J. Norton

Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in reduced risk and treatment of cardiac fibroids some scientists suggested.

Cardiac fibrosis is an uncommon condition of abnormal thickening of the heart valves caused by the inappropriate proliferation of cardiac fibroblasts but commonly, it is the excess deposition of molecules outside a cell or cells with structural and biochemical support to the surrounding cells in the cardiac muscle, leading to cardiac dysfunction and eventually heart failure.

The study of rat cardiac fibroblasts caused by injected angiotensin ii (AngII) also revealed that green tea inhibited the abnormal increase in the level of connective tissue growth factor CTGF by decreased expression of the nuclear translocation of NF-κB p65 subunit and degradation of IκB-α in induced promotion of fibroblast proliferation and extracellular matrix (ECM) accumulation, thereby exacerbating cardiac hypertrophy and subsequent failure were attributed to bioactive polyphenol EGCG expression is significantly reduced collagen synthesis, fibronectin (FN) expression, and cell proliferation.

Indeed, due to the activity of CTGF as a matricellular protein modulating the fibrotic process in cardiac remodeling, some researchers suggested that the growth factor may be considered as a biomarker for cardiac fibrosis for therapeutic intervention to mitigate fibrosis in the heart.

Interestingly, in the evaluated the effect of GABA tea, containing a high level of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in cardiac function with male Wistar rats injected with 55 mg/kg streptozotocin (STZ) to induce diabetes for 2 weeks and then orally given dosages of 4.55 and 45.5 mg/kg/day GABA tea extract for 6 weeks, researchers revealed that rats treated with an injection of GABA tea not only induces fasting blood glucose levels returned to normal levels but also inhibits cardiac fibrosis in compared to the untreated group.

Further experiments also showed that GABA tea in ameliorated cardiac deposit risk was attributed to inhibited the protein levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), Fas, and activated caspase-8 and caspase-3 induced in STZ rats in mediated cardiomyocyte apoptosis which has been found in elevation in a patient with cardiac dysfunction such as cardiac fibrosis and an indication of chronic hemodynamic overloading and early cardiac decompensation.

Dr. Cherng SH, the lead authors suggested," (GABA tea reduced)cardiac fibrosis (expression) in diabetic rats may be mediated by reducing blood glucose and further attenuating TNF-alpha expression and/or Fas/Fas ligand (FasL)-mediated apoptosis".

Unfortunately, the injection of bioactive polyphenols (-)-Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) in high doses was found to induce the opposite effect by increasing cardiac fibroids.

According to the study of green tea bioactive polyphenols (-)-Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) in risk of cardiac fibroids induction of myocardial-toxicity in an animal model, at the joint study led by the Guangzhou Medical University, injection of EGCG 500 and 1000 mg/kg demonstrated a significant effect in initiated cardiac collagen synthesis involved in the formation of filtration systems, through cells differentiation in connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) mRNA expression and protein produced by fibroblasts.

Furthermore, the application of green tea extract also displayed an exhibited fibrosis-related protein expression in the induction of cardiac fibroids deposit through stimulating the function of fibronectin (FN), a ubiquitous extracellular matrix (ECM) glycoprotein circulated in the blood to initiate heart muscle repair.

After taking into account other con confounders, Dr. Cai Y, the lead scientist said, "High oral doses of EGCG could induce cardiac fibrosis, and shed new light on the understanding of EGCG-mediated myocardiotoxicity".

The information findings suggested that green tea with bioactive polyphenols EGCG at a lower dose may be used as a functional food in reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases caused by cardiac fibroids. Intake of green tea supplement EGCG must be taken with care as overdoses-toxicity has been reported in some cases.

#Antioxidants #Alliin Inhibits #Diseases Associated with Chronic Inflammation that Causes Tumors and Cancers, Researchers Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Inflammation is a natural defense of the immune system that protects the body against the invasion of harmful stimuli and pathogens.

In the acute phase of infection, the immune first line of defense white blood cells, macrophages stimulates the production of proinflammatory cytotoxic to destroy all invaders which try to enter the body.

Most cases of acute infection are stopped at this phase and the wound is healed itself quickly.

However, if the wound is too large, then the recovery may take a longperiodime and through 4 overlap recovery stages.

Any interruption in the overlapped recovery stage may cause the formation of scars, similar to those of overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Diseases associated with chronic inflammation induced by protein, lipid, and cellular damage include cardiovascular disease, diabetes, neurodegenerative disease,... and cancers.

In other words, prolonged low-grade inflammation caused by continuing the production of proinflammatory cytokines due to an immune response that can not kill off all invaders in a set period between 3-8 weeks can result in serious and chronic diseases.

The results have been found to cause cell death and alternation of cell DNA.

Believe it or not, people with low-grade chronic inflammation are prone to psychological stress that links to greater risk for depression, and heart disease. particularly the body's ability to regulate the inflammatory response and normal defense.

Out of many risk factors involved in the onset of chronic inflammatory diseases, some researchers suggested the promotion of a high-fat diet in the Western world may correlate to the rise of the condition.

Dr. Yehui Duan, the lead scientist wrote, "In recent years, chronic overnutrition, such as consumption of a high-fat diet (HFD), has been increasingly viewed as a significant modifiable risk factor for diseases such as diabetes and certain types of cancer".

And, "the recent scientific literature about HFD-induced inflammation and subsequent development of diseases and cancer, with an emphasis on mechanisms involved. Given the expanding global epidemic of excessive HFD intake, understanding the impacts of an HFD on these medical conditions, gaining great insights into possible underlying mechanisms, and developing effective therapeutic strategies are of great importance".

Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide,. a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belonging to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.

In the urgency to find a natural and potential compound for the treatment of diseases associated with inflammation, researchers examined the active component is alliin (S-allyl cysteine sulfoxide) anti-inflammatory activity.

Before incubated with alliin, lipopolysaccharide- (LPS-) stimulated 3T3-L1 adipocytes showed a significant increase in proteins involved in the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, including IL-6, MCP-1, and Egr-1 in 3T3-L1 adipocytes exposed to 100 ng/mL LPS for 1 hour.

According to the tested assay in lipopolysaccharide- (LPS-) stimulated 3T3-L1 adipocytes incubated for 24 h with 100 μmol/L alliin, the bioactive compound inhibited such increase.

Furthermore, the overexpression of the phosphorylation of ERK1/2 associated with cell differentiation including cell death caused by LPS-induced inflammation in adipocytes was also decreased following alliin treatment.

Additionally, alliin prevented the expression of inflammation in facilitating the alternation of cell DNA by modulating the gene expressions involved in immune response such as the tumor-suppressive gene, and inhibiting the genes related to cancer.

Dr. Saray Quintero-Fabián, the lead scientist wrote, " The present results have shown that allicin suppresses the LPS inflammatory signals by generating an anti-inflammatory gene expression profile and by modifying adipocyte metabolic profile".

Taken altogether, alliin may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with inflammation, depending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of alliin in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Healthyfood #NavyBeans Promote the Colon Health by Manipulating the Gut Microbiota, Researchers Say

By Kyle J. Norton

The colon-formed part of the digestive system plays a critical role to absorb water from the small bowel contents and break down certain materials in the feces into substances to be reabsorbed and reused by the body.

Colon health is the process to enhance the function of the colon through many mechanisms, particularly in improving the ratio of gut microbiota.

Gut microbiota is a community of bacteria found in the gut. In a healthy individual, the ratio of good and bad bacterias are balanced. However, suppose the bad bacteria are overgrowing compared to good bacteria. In that case, it may lead to dysbiosis which has been found to induce chronic diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, cancer, and autism.

The most common risk factors associated with the imbalanced ratio of gut microbiota include the use of antibiotics, illness, stress, aging, bad dietary habits, and lifestyle.

In other words, if you follow a healthy diet with a high in vegetables and fruits and fewer in processed foods, saturated and trans fat, and red meat accompanied by moderate exercise, you may have done a job to protect the balance of gut microbiota.

The impact of gut microbes can also have a strong influence on what the human host is able to extract from its diet, both nutritionally and energetically.

Epidemiological studies suggested overweight and obese people show dysbiosis characterized by a lower diversity. Imbalanced gut microbiota dysbiosis promotes diet-induced obesity and metabolic complications.

Some researchers suggested that we can optimize our colon health by manipulating the gut microbiota through diet by increasing the intake of fiber, prebiotic, and probiotic foods.

Dr. Hall A, the lead scientist in the study of microbial metabolism in the mammalian gut, wrote, "Microbial dysbiosis, however, has been implicated in a number of human disorders, including obesity and inflammation. This dichotomy highlights the need to understand the factors that determine the composition and metabolic output of our resident and transient microbes".

And, " Throughout the human lifespan, we know that diet plays a major role in shaping gut microbial communities, as well as directing the types and amounts of metabolites produced. Understanding the factors that affect microbial metabolic output within the host may help identify the roles of microbes in health, as well as new targets for treatment in disease".

The small, white navy bean, also called pea bean or haricot, popular in both dry and green forms, is very popular in Britain and the US, native to Peru. It is now grown and consumed across the world, due to its numerous health benefits.

In finding a natural compound for improving colon health, researchers evaluated the effect of navy beans in the modulation of host-microbiome metabolism.

The 4-week, randomized controlled trial with overweight and obese CRC survivors involved the consumption of 1 meal and 1 snack daily, containing 35 g of cooked navy bean or macronutrient-matched meals and snacks with 0 g of navy beans for the control group (n = 18).

According to the assessment of the impact on the human stool metabolome, which includes the presence of navy bean metabolites, * 26 significantly different metabolites were found at day 28 in the navy bean group compared to the participants' baseline (p ≤ 0.05) and to the control group.
* Additionally, of the 560 total metabolites identified from the cooked navy beans, there was 237 possible navy bean-derived metabolites identified in the stool of participants consuming navy beans.

* Most importantly, the stool relative abundance of ophthalmic increased 5.25-fold for navy bean consumers strongly suggesting that navy beans in the glutathione regulation and cancer control were attributed to detoxification of xenobiotics, antioxidant defense, proliferation, and apoptosis.

More precisely, navy-bean protects the colon cell's integrity by exciting detoxed, antioxidant, anti-proliferation, and anti-apoptotic activity.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "These metabolites and metabolic pathways represent an acute response to increased navy bean intake, which merits further investigation for improving colonic health after long-term consumption".

Taken altogether, the navy bean may be considered a remedy for the improvement of colon health, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Healthyfood #Coffee in Reducing the Risk and Progression of #Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Coffee intake may have a positive implication in reduced risk of early onset of Alzheimer's disease, a respectable joint study suggested.

Coffee, a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roasted beans from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

Alzheimer's disease is a generalized and progressive neurodegenerative disease due to aging.

In a rat model for Alzheimer's disease (AD) induced by phosphoprotein phosphatase 2A (PP2A), eicosanoyl-5-hydroxytryptamide (EHT), researchers showed that components found in coffee exhibited a protective effect against AD, through the inhibited expression of the I2(PP2A), or SET protein involved multiple cellular processes in the brains.

More importantly, oral administration of the supplement for 12 months showed a strongly attenuated all the defects of cognitive impairment, including tau hyperphosphorylation, and elevated levels of cytoplasmic amyloid-β protein caused by phosphoprotein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) injection.

Dr. Basurto-Islas G, the lead author in the joint study said, "The possibility that EHT may make a substantial contribution to the apparent neuroprotective benefits associated with coffee consumption as evidenced by numerous epidemiologic studies indicating that coffee drinkers have substantially lowered risk of developing AD".

Furthermore, Dr. Wierzejska R in the evaluated effects of caffeine coffee in dietary factors which might prolong mental agility, said, " moderate coffee consumption, in fact, has a lower the risk for common neurodegenerative conditions, i.e. Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases" and "Possibly, in the future experts will recommend drinking coffee not only to satisfy individual taste preferences but also to decrease age-related mental deterioration.".

Others, in the concerns of the high consumption of coffee effect on an individual's health through evaluating database of online medical literature, researchers found that coffee-drinking habits, and/or the quantity of coffee consumption, have a significantly reduced risk of dementia/AD, and other chronic diseases, but the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood when comparing coffee drinkers with a non-drinker.

Taking together, regular drinking of caffeine coffee in a moderated amount daily may have a positive effect in attenuating the risk and progression of Alzheimer's disease and caffeine may be considered as a novel therapy for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.
