Chemotherapy is an action in which a substance including drugs was used to treat any disease, particularly, cancer.
In cancers, chemotherapy is a treatment to kill or damage cancer cells in a specific area. Besides chemotherapy, the most common treatment of cancer in conventional medicine are surgery and radiation, depending on the severity of the condition.
The aim of chemotherapy is to cure or control the progression of cancer and improve the quality of life of patients by reducing symptoms.
In other words, chemotherapy is effective to shrink a tumor before surgery or kill the remaining cancer cells that cannot completely be removed by radiation and surgery.
Depending on the type and stage and grade of cancer, treatment may be a single chemo drug or several drugs.
Chemotherapy has been found to induce serious side effects, including fatigue. hair loss, easy bruising and bleeding, infection, anemia, nausea and vomiting, and constipation due to its nature to kill cells (cancer and healthy cells) indiscriminatingly.
Betanin is phytochemical in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of Betacyanins, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.
Researchers with an aim to discover a natural compound or whole food which enhances chemotherapy in the treatment of cancer examined the effects of betanin (BET) co-administration with potent anticancer drugs e.g. doxorubicin (DOX) in reducing the side effects.
The study included the introduction of a new pH-responsive nanocarrier via decoration of gelatin nanoparticles (GNPs) by (methoxy poly (ethylene glycol)-poly ((2-dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate-co-itaconic acid) (PGNPs) loaded with 20.5 % of DOX and 16.25of BET that overcomes the restrictions of BET and provides the synergistic effect of DOX@BET.
At adjusting, the pH of the environment, the stimulated release of DOX and BET from PGNPs showed a significant synergistic effect of DOX@BET not only inhibited the tested cancer cell line MCF-7 but also the side effect caused by DOX.
In other words, betanin enhanced chemo drug efficacy and inhibited the treatment of drug toxicity.
Based on the findings, Dr. Amjadi S, the lead scientist said, "(The synergistic effect of DOX@BET may contribute to the) developed smart nanocarrier will be a hopeful nanocarrier for cancer therapy".
In order to find out more information about the enhanced chemotherapy researchers investigated the activity of extract of red beetroot (Beta vulgaris L.), the FDA-approved red food color E162 with an anticancer drug, doxorubicin (adriamycin) in human prostate cancer cells (PC-3) and estrogen receptor-positive human breast cancer cells (MCF-7).
Individual treatment of doxorubicin and the beetroot extract exhibited a cytotoxic effect in the two tested cancer cell lines in a dose-dependent manner.
The cytotoxicity induced by beetroot extract at the concentration of 29 µg/ml was significantly lower compared to doxorubicin.
Beetroot extract inhibited the cancer proliferation at a trend of gradual decrease of the growth rate of the PC-3 cells (3.7% in 3 days vs. 12.5% in 7 days) compared to doxorubicin completely inhibited the growth of the PC-3 cells in three days at the same concentration level.
In the additional differentiation of the results, researchers found that the cytotoxicity exhibited by the red beetroot extract is attributed to the effects of betanin, the major betacyanin constituent.
Based on the findings, betanin co-administration with chemo drug not only have a profound effect in enhancing the function of the anti-cancer drug but also reduce the side effect induced by conventional medicine.
Taken altogether, betanin used alone or combined with other chemo drugs may be considered medicine for the treatment of cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of betanin in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Healthyfood #GreenBeanExtract Inhibits #PlateletAggregation In Vitros, Researchers Suggest
By Kyle J. Norton
Platelet aggregation refers to the platelet-to-platelet adhesion in the blood that forms a clot.
Platelet aggregation plays a critical role in the protection of the body against blood loss due to injury or tissue damage.
However, activated platelets that stimulate blood clot formation have also been found to induce atherothrombotic disease.
Antiplatelet aggregation medicines, also known as a platelet agglutination inhibitor are the types of medicine that process blood thinning property.
In other words, antiplatelet aggregation medicines reduce the risk of blood clotting used in patients who have a high risk of cardiovascular disease such as aspirin.
Coagulation disorders or bleeding disorders are medical conditions that affect blood clotting activities. The most common diseases associated with coagulation disorders are Hemophilia, Von Willebrand disease, clotting factor deficiencies, hypercoagulable states, and deep venous thrombosis.
Most common causes of the bleeding disorder are found in patients with a lower red blood cell count
and vitamin K deficiency.
However, long-term use of certain medication has also been found to side effects of bleeding disorder.
Most common symptoms of blessing disorder are unexplained and easy bruising, heavy menstrual bleeding in women, frequent nose bleeding, excessive bleeding from small cuts or an injury
and bleeding into joints.
Dr. Copplestone JA in investigating the bleeding and coagulation disorders in the elderly wrote, "Ageing does not bring with it any major changes in the coagulation or fibrinolytic proteins or platelets. It does bring a greater burden of disease, with fewer reserves, and so when hemorrhage occurs in the elderly it has more serious consequences".
And, " Drugs are a significant and potentially preventable cause of bleeding in the elderly. The most frequent problems arise with anticoagulants. The risk of interactions increases with the number of other medications that are prescribed".
Green bean is a genus of Phaseolus Sensu Stricto, containing 55 different species, belong to the family Fabaceae and native to the New World tropics and grown in Europe for its attractive flowers and fleshy immature pods. It can be classified into two major groups, bush beans, and pole beans.
In finding the natural compound which processes anti-thrombosis, researchers examined the antiplatelet, anticoagulant, and fibrinolytic activity in vitro of extracts from selected fruits and vegetables.
The study compared the effect of extracts prepared from each sample included an aqueous (juice or pressed solubles) and/or methanol-soluble fraction.at a final concentration of 1 mg/ml from samples of 19 fruits and 26 vegetables, including green beans representative of the local diet.
Extracts of green beans showed an inhibited platelet aggregation induced by ADP and arachidonic acid, in a concentration-dependent manner, compared to other extracts.
Compared to methanolic extracts of grapes prolonged activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) and diluted prothrombin time (dPT) and raspberry prolonged APTT are higher compared to those of green beans.
Taken altogether, green beans may be used as an adjunct therapy for the prevention and treatment of platelet aggregation, pending the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Antioxidant p-#Coumaricacid found in #ColtsfootExtract Inhibits the Risk of Tuberculosis (TB), Researchers Suggest
By Kyle J. Norton
The lung is a vital organ located near the backbone on either side of the heart with major functions to inhale oxygen from the air to the bloodstream that nourishes the body cells and exhaling carbon dioxide from the bloodstream.
Other functions of the lung are to maintain the right levels of pH, filter out blood clots, and protect the heart against shock, infection, and speech.
Tuberculosis (TB) is a contagious disease caused by bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
The bacteria attacked the lung tissue, leading to the significantly reduced function of the lung in inhaling and exhaling.
The disease is also found to cause major damage to other parts of the body.
According to statistics, 25% of the world's population is infected with TB. In 2016, 10.4 million people around the world became sick with the disease-inducing the death of 1.7 million people.
The most common signs and symptoms of TB are associated with reduced lung function, including coughing that lasts a long period of time, coughing up blood, chest pain, particularly in breathing or coughing, fatigue, fever, night sweats, and chills.
Some patients may also experience symptoms of unintended weight loss.
Conventionally, the length of treatment of TB depending on the severity of the disease takes longer compared to other infections with at least six months of antibiotics intake, including Isoniazid, Rifampin (Rifadin, Rimactane) and Ethambutol (Myambutol).
Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara) is a perennial herbaceous plant, genus Tussilago, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia. The herb has been used for thousands of years to treat asthma, various coughs, bronchial congestion, respiratory disorders, headaches and obstruction in the nasal passage, etc.
In finding a potential compound that processes antitubercular activity, researchers examined the effect of Arctium lappa and Tussilago farfara extracts for activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
In Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv, according to the tested analysis, the ethyl acetate extract of Tussilago farfara displayed antitubercular activity with a MIC of 62.5 μg/mL.
The anti-tuberculosis property of Tussilago farfara against the Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv was attributed to the compounds including mixture of β sitosterol/stigmasterol (4), trans-caffeic acid (7), kaempferol (8), quercetin (9), kaempferol-3-O-glucoside (10), loliolide (11), a (4:1) mixture of p-coumaric acid/4-hydroxybenzoic acid (12), p-coumaric acid (13). in the extract.
In compound comparison, the best anti-tuberculosis activity was observed in the p-coumaric acid (13) (MIC 31.3 μg/mL or 190.9 μM) alone and in a mixture with 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (12) (MIC 62.5 μg/mL).
Based on the findings, researchers said, "The above results provide for the first time some scientific evidence to support, to some extent, the ethnomedicinal use of Arctium lappa and Tussilago farfara as traditional antitubercular remedies.".
Taken altogether, coltsfoot may be considered a remedy for the treatment of tuberculosis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Healthyfood #Ginger Exhibits #CardioprotectiveEffect, Against the Risk of #CardiovascularDiseases, Scientists Show
By Kyle J. Norton
Ginger may have a profound and positive effect in reducing the risk and treatment of cardiovascular disease, some studies found.
Cardiovascular disease is a medical condition associated with the heart and blood vessels, depending on the location of blood clots.
The most common causes of cardiovascular disease is atherosclerosis caused by plaque accumulated on the wall of the arteries, leading to reduced rich oxygenated blood flow to the heart, a major cause of the death of heart cells.
According to the John Hopkins statistics, approximately 84 million people in the US suffer from some form of cardiovascular disease, causing about 2,200 deaths a day, averaging one death every 40 seconds.
Sadly, almost one out of every three deaths results from cardiovascular disease.
Epidemiologically, certain risk factors are found to associate with the onset of the condition, including lack of exercise, diabetes, use of tobacco, gender, genetic preposition, and excessive alcohol drinking.
However, poor diet was one of the preventable risk factors in the Western world. Researchers suggested that there is no coincidence but a correlation of the widespread cardiovascular disease in the US and the promotion of the Western diet over the past many decades.
A diet high in saturated and trans fat, red meat, and processed food, and few in fruits and vegetables and whole-grain have strong and positive implications in the promotion of the onset of the disease.
Dr. Sonia S. Anand, the lead scientist in the study "Food Consumption and its Impact on Cardiovascular Disease: Importance of Solutions Focused on the globalized food system" said, "Evidence from different countries, age/race/ethnicity/socioeconomic groups suggest the health effects studies of foods, macronutrients, and dietary patterns on CVD appear to be far more consistent though regional knowledge gaps are highlighted".
And, "Poor quality diets are high in refined grains and added sugars, salt, unhealthy fats, and animal-source foods; and low in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes, fish and nuts ( are associated to the onset of CVD)"
Therefore, by teaching the general public the role of diet that can prevent CVD, the writers continued, "A healthier food supply enables individuals to make healthier choices. Developing food systems that underpin healthier dietary patterns based on our consensus noted above involves improving the food supply by producing more heart-healthy foods and fewer foods associated with CVD".
These results clearly stated, a healthy diet with high in fruits and vegetables, whole grain less saturated and trans fat, red meat, and processed foods can substantially reduce the risk of CVD.
Ginger officinale or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.
The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.
With an aim to reconfirm the effects of ginger for the treatment of many aspects of cardiovascular disease, Dr. Nicoll R and colleagues conducted a study to look into ginger anti-cardiovascular disease activity.
In the animal model, the application of ginger demonstrated a significant anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiplatelet, hypotensive and hypolipidemic effect to protect the tested animal against the onset of cardiovascular disease.
In the human trial, dosages of 5 g or more demonstrated significant antiplatelet activity.
These results suggested that ginger may have the potential to offer not only a cheaper natural alternative to conventional agents but one with significantly lower side effects.
Furthermore in the concern of the widespread of cardiovascular diseases in the Western world and the leading cause of death worldwide, researchers at the Katedra Technologii Żywienia Człowieka evaluated the effects of the kitchen spice on the condition.
Ginger and the selected spices showed a strongly cardioprotective effect through their antioxidant, chemopreventive, anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties.
At the final report of the study, Dr. Kulczyński B, said, "Selected spices (garlic, cinnamon, ginger, coriander, and turmeric) (may be used )in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases".
Taken altogether, ginger may be considered a functional food for the prevention and combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of cardiovascular disease with no side effects.

#Healthyfood #Eggplant Normalizes the Blood Cholesterol Against #Hyperlipidemia, According to Clinical Trials
By Kyle J. Norton
Eggplant may process a significant effect in decreasing the risk and onset of abnormally high blood cholesterol, some scientists suggested
Cholesterol, the waxy substance produced by the liver or intake from dietary sources plays an important role in the building of the cell walls, producing steroid hormones and promoting the digestive function in food digestion.
However, high levels of blood cholesterol can weaken the arterial wall and block the blood flow in the arteries, leading to a substantially increased risk of heart disease and stroke.
The ratio of total cholesterol is 4/1, any number that is less than is considered within the healthy range. The lower ratio is an indication that you have a higher than normal amount of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), which is essential to remove blood cholesterol from the blood back to the liver, leading to less low-density lipoprotein (LDL) in the initiation of cardiovascular diseases.
The below table Classification of cholesterol levels, provided by Dr.Michael Tanner and Dr. Nate Link the lead author at the New York University School of Medicine and Bellevue Hospital Center New York,

Eggplant is a species of S. Melongena, belonging to the family Solanaceae and native to India.
The plant has been cultivated in southern and eastern Asia since prehistory. It is famous for its deep purple and the best eggplant can be found from August through October when it is in season.
Chemical constituents of eggplant include sterols (i.e. typical plant sterols, androstane, pregnane and cholestane derivatives, steroidal alkaloids, and sapogenins), phytosterols, triterpenes, δ-amyrin, Chlorogenic acid, Nasunin, and other Polyphenolic compounds.
In the study to reaffirm the Eggplant (Solanum melongena) consumed extensively in Brazil may have a strong effect in reducing serum cholesterol researchers at the Instituto de Ciências Biológicas conducted an evaluation to test the plant cholesterol metabolism and hypocholesterolemic effect
In the total of 38 hypercholesterolemic human volunteers ingesting S. Melongena infusion for five weeks, 38 hypercholesterolemic subjects were given either S. Melongena infusion (N = 19) or placebo (N = 19) and participated in two clinical experiments in which the effect of S. Melongena infusion was studied with (N = 16) or without (N = 38) dietary orientation.
S. Melongena infusion significantly reduced the blood levels of total and LDL cholesterol and of apolipoprotein B.
After dietary orientation, no intra- or intergroup differences were seen for any of the parameters analyzed.
The results suggest that S. Melongena infusion had a modest and transitory effect, which was not different from that obtained with standard orientation for dyslipidemia patients (diet and physical activities).
Dried powdered fruits of eggplant (Solanum melongena) were tested in a double-blind placebo-controlled study of the effectiveness of oral Solanum melongena (SM) consisting of 41 hyperlipidemic volunteers allocated to active treatment (n= 21) or placebo (n= 20).
Each volunteer received two capsules containing SM (450 mg) or placebo (450 mg) twice daily and was followed monthly. The dose of SM used corresponds to that given to treat hyperlipidemia in Brazil.
After 3 months, serum total cholesterol, LDL-c, and LDL-c/HDL-c decreased (p<0.05) in the group treated with SM.
Dr. Silva GE, the lead author wrote in the final report of the study, " SM, at least in the form commercialized in Brazil (dried powdered fruits), requires further clinical trials before being recommended to treat hyperlipidemia".
Taken altogether, eggplant may be considered a functional food for the prevention and adjunct therapy for the treatment of high blood cholesterol with no side effects.

#Healthyfood #GreenBeans Inhibit the Risk of Acute Myelogenous #Leukemia (#AML), Scientists Say
By Kyle J. Norton
Leukemia is a condition characterized by an abnormal increase of white blood cells produced by the bone marrow and/or the lymphatic system.
Depending on the malignant granulocytes or lymphocytes, leukemia is classified into myelogenous or lymphoblastic leukemia.
Bone marrow, containing two main types of stem cell is soft tissue inside the hollow center of the major bone, including the spine, pelvis, underarm, leg. etc. with the main function of generating blood cells.
Believe it or not, the bone marrow produces 200 billion new red blood cells every day, to replace the blood cells that die off, along with white blood cells and platelets.
According to the statistics provided by the leukemia research, leukemia is diagnosed 10 times more often in adults than children. Approximately, each year the disease causes the death of 68,000 Americans.
Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is the 7th most common cancer in the U.S.
Acute leukemia is a condition caused by a rapid increase in the number of extremely immature white blood cells which appear in the bloodstream into other parts of the body, including tissue and organs, including acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML).
In ALL, lymphocytes appear immature in the bloodstream. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common children forms of leukemia with about 80% of all cases.
Chronic leukemia is a condition of the slow but still excessive build-up of relatively mature abnormal white blood cells. The condition has a tendency to spread slowly to other parts of the body through the bloodstream and/or lymphatic system, including chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML).
Green bean is a genus of Phaseolus Sensu Stricto, containing 55 different species, belong to the family Fabaceae and native to the New World tropics and grown in Europe for its attractive flowers and fleshy immature pods. It can be classified into two major groups, bush beans, and pole beans.
On finding a potent veggie for the prevention of leukemia, the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center evaluated associations between consumption of vegetables, fruits, and meats with AML risk among Texas residents.
According to the results from all participants, 323 adult de novo AML cases and 380 frequency-matched controls, demographic and food frequency questionnaires, overall consumed the darkest green vegetables, including green beans significantly decreased AML risk, compared to significantly increased among greatest consumers of red meat.
Among women, consumption was in the highest quartile of dark-green vegetables had a relative odds ratio of 0.28 compared to the lowest quartile.
In other words, the intake of dark-green vegetables such as green beans has reduced risk leukemia only in women compared to men in a dose-dependent manner.
Based on the findings, researchers said, " Based on these findings, interventions can be developed to modify intake of specific dietary components to reduce cancer risk".
Taken altogether, dark-green vegetables such as green beans may be used as an adjunct therapy for the prevention of leukemia in women, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Healthyfood #Cucumber's #VucurbitacinB (CuB) Processes Immune Modulatory and Anti-Inflammatory Properties Associated with Overexpression of ROS, According to Studies
By Kyle J. Norton
Inflammation is a natural defense of the human body against the invasion of harmful microorganisms.
In other words, the immune response of the first line of defense macrophages after receiving information about skin or tissue damaged from the brain stimulates the production of a blood palette to cover the wound and pro-inflammatory cytokines to kill off invaders which may enter the body.
Most cases of the small wound are stopped in the acute phase of infection and the wound starts to heal itself.
In a large wound, some stitches are needed accompanied by the injection of antibiotics.
However, if the inflammation persists due to overexpression of proinflammatory cytokines, it can lead to the death of nearby healthy cells, causing the formation of scars.
In some cases, immune system response may also be compromised with the presence of harmful bacteria or viruses due to its inability to kill off all pathogens in a set period of time, leading to chronic low-grade inflammation.
The continued production of pro-inflammatory cytokines over the long term can result in protein, lipid, and cell damage and alternation of cell DNA causing the onset of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.
Some researchers suggested without knowing more about the nature of chronic low-grade inflammatory disease, the use of NSAIDs may cause harm to patients.
Dr. Adler UC in the concerns about the use of NSAIDs for the treatment of chronic low-grade inflammatory disease, explained, "Pro-inflammatory cytokines and their chronic effect - low-grade inflammation - have been associated with diverse chronic conditions".
And, "current data on the role of pro-inflammatory cytokines and that the use of NSAIDs to treat chronic low-grade inflammation can produce a contrary, rebound effect, as anticipated by Hahnemann. By diverting from the "palliative action-rebound effect" course".
The cucumber plant is a species of Cucumis Sativus, belongings to the family Cucurbitaceae and native to Western Asia. It is a creeping vine with roots in the ground and grows up with the support of frames.
With an aim to find a natural compound that processes anti-inflammatory properties, researchers investigated cucurbitacin B (CuB) effect, a major compound found in cucumber on parameters related to antigen presentation and T-cell activation.
On basal and lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammation, CuB inhibited significantly the LPS-a expression of MHC II (antigen-presenting cells), CD40, CD54, and CD80 associated with immunodeficiency with hyper-IgM.
Furthermore, the injection of CuB also suppressed the production of intracellular reactive oxygen species and blocked the activation of pro-inflammatory mediators, such as nitric oxide (NO), prostaglandin E2, tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin (IL)-6, IL-12, and IL-1β, without inducing any cytotoxicity.
The finding suggested that CuB possesses immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effects against diseases involved in inflammation.
In other to reveal more information anti-inflammatory activity of CuB, researchers evaluated the chemical ability to scavenge free radicals such as hydroxyl radicals, superoxide anions, and singlet oxygen.
According to the tested assays, CuB exerted a broad spectrum radical-scavenging capacity that surpasses those of grape-seed extract, wheat, alfalfa, and ginkgo biloba extracts.
Cucurbitacins not only inhibited lipid peroxidation and oxidation but also exhibited anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties through their derivatives 23, 24 dihydro cucurbitacin and cucurbitacin.
In other words, CuB inhibited the expression of TNF in macrophages and lymphocytes involved in immune response and the expression of pro-inflammatory mediators such as nitric-oxide synthase-2 and cyclooxygenase-2.
Dr. Olayinka Oridupa, the lead scientist said, "It is general knowledge among researchers working with natural medicinal products that any of the cucurbitacins have the attributes or the potential to become fully patented as an anti-inflammatory...drug".
Taken altogether, cucumber processed with a high amount of CuB may be used for the treatment of inflammation, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of CuB in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
