Collectively, researchers said, "These findings support the hypothesis that curcumin supplementation reduces intestinal cholesterol absorption and prevents atherosclerosis in high-fat diet-fed ApoE-/- mice".

And " Curcumin affords a potent antiatherogenic action by inhibiting intestinal cholesterol absorption in the mouse".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Free radicals are unstable and highly reactive atoms with a single electron in the outermost ring. Therefore, in order to maintain stability, free radicals are ready to steal or donate a single electron from other stable atoms in the body, leading to a cascade that cannot be stopped until all single electron is paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

In the body, a free radical is produced by cell metabolism that provides energy for body needs. Outside of the body, free radicals can be anywhere including the air we breathe and the foods we eat.

Inflammation is a natural and systematic immune response to the body's damage and injury. Upon receiving the information from the central nervous system, macrophages, the largest cells in the immune system stimulate the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines to the site of infection to protect against possible exposure to infectious agents.

The aim of these actions is to minimize the damage and speed up the healing processes. However, if the pro-inflammatory cytokines are overexpressed, they can cause damage to the nearby healthy and formation of the scars on the infected tissue.

Chronic inflammation is the condition when the immune system can not kill all infectious pathogens in the acute phase, leading to persistent low-grade inflammation, judged by a small rise in immune system markers found in blood or tissue.

Long-term low-grade inflammation has been found to trigger autoimmunity in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the body tissue in the damaged site and other healthy tissue.

In the study to reaffirm the inflammatory effect of chamomile used in traditional medicine for the treatment of inflammation-related disorders, researchers at the Case Western Reserve University conducted an examination of the herbal inhibitory effects on nitric oxide (NO) production and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression, and its potential anti-inflammatory mechanisms using RAW 264.7 macrophages.

In LPS-induced NO production, the application of chamomile significantly blocked the series of proinflammatory cytokines with the function to protect the cell against infection of LPS, namely, the IL-1β, IL-6, and TNFα in RAW 264.7 macrophages.

Furthermore, chamomile caused a reduction in LPS-induced iNOS mRNA and protein expression, a family of primary inflammatory response genes.

In RAW 264.7 macrophages, LPS-induced DNA binding activity of RelA/p65 in the prevention of the production of anti-inflammatory cytokines was significantly inhibited by chamomile.

Moreover, chamomile treatment also inhibited the release of LPS-induced prostaglandin E(2), a bioactive lipid that can elicit a wide range of biological effects associated with inflammation, in RAW 264.7 macrophages.

Interestingly, the anti-inflammatory effect of Chamomile was attributed to the inhibition of COX-2, the proinflammatory enzyme activity by blocking the reduction in LPS-induced COX-2 mRNA and protein expression, without affecting COX-1 expression in the inflammatory response in comparison to the non-steroidal-anti-inflammatory-drug, sulindac.

These results suggested that chamomile processed a mechanism of action similar to those of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of chronic inflammation.

However, due to the limitations of the above study, additional data collection on large example size and multi-center studies performed with human consumption of whole food during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of chamomile anti-inflammatory diseases possibilities.

According to the tested assay performed from the fecal samples, there were no major effects of navy bean inclusion on microbial populations. However, there were significant differences due to dietary intervention in both research diets.

More precisely, after 4 wk of dietary intervention both control and navy bean diets, increased the levels of Phylum Firmicutes and decreased the levels of Phyla Actinobacteria and Fusobacteria, compared to the baseline.

Additional differentiation of the sample, researchers suggest
* Cooked navy bean exerted no negative alterations of microbial populations in dogs, therefore, the bean powders may be a viable protein and fiber source for commercial pet foods.

* The no difference of both diets associated with the highly variable microbial populations observed in these healthy adult pet dogs at baseline may contribute to the potential reason for the difficulty to detect alterations in microbial populations following dietary changes.


Furthermore, in C57Bl/6 mice that were fed diets supplemented with 20% cooked navy bean (NB) or black bean (BB) flours or an isocaloric basal diet control (BD) for 3 weeks, researchers found that
* Both NB and BB diets similarly altered the fecal microbiota community structure by increasing the abundance of carbohydrate-fermenting bacteria such as Prevotella, S24-7, and Ruminococcus flavefaciens.
* Both NB and BB enhanced mucus and epithelial barrier integrity vs. BD in multiple aspects associated with the diseases in the colon.

* The risk of colonic diseases involved in the biomarkers was also inhibited by both NB and BB diets by improving the colonic cell integrity.

Collectively, Dr. Monk JM, the lead scientist wrote, " Overall, NB and BB improved baseline colonic microenvironment function by altering the microbial community structure and activity and promoting colon barrier integrity and function; effects which may prove beneficial in attenuating gut-associated diseases".

Taken altogether, the fermented navy bean may be considered a remedy for the improvement of the gut microbiota, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Obesity is defined as a medical condition of excess body fat that has accumulated over time, while overweight is a condition of excess body weight relative to height. According to the Body Mass Index(BMI), a BMI between 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight, while a BMI of over 30 is an indication of obesity.
