#DriedPeas and #BeanFibers in Attenuating the Risk of #MetabolicSyndrome, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Intake of dried peas fiber daily and regularly may reduce the risk of metabolic syndrome, some institute studies suggested.

Metabolic syndrome is a biochemical and physiological factor associated with the risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.

The dried pea is a small but nutritionally mighty member of the legume family, genus Pisum belongings to the family Fabaceae with a healthy source of proteins, fibers, vitamins, and minerals.

In the study to investigate the effects of frequent consumption (five cups/week over 8 weeks) of pulses (yellow peas, chickpeas, navy beans, and lentils), compared with counseling to reduce energy intake by 2093 kJ/d (500 kcal/d), on risk factors of the MetSyn of in 2 groups (nineteen and twenty-one subjects, respectively) of overweight or obese (mean BMI 32·8 kg/m2) adults, researchers after adjusting to many confounders after 8 weeks of the experiment suggested that
1. Pulse group expressed an HDL and C-peptide increased by 4·5 and 12·3 %, respectively compared to a decrease by 0·8 and 7·6 %, respectively, in the energy-restricted group.
2. Insulin AUC decreased in both females and males on the energy-restricted diet by 24·2 and 4·8 %, respectively, and on the pulse diet, it fell by 13·9 % in females and 27·3 % in males respectively.

Based on the result interpretation, Dr. Mollard RC, the lead author said," Frequent consumption of pulses in an ad libitum diet reduced risk factors of the MetSyn".

C-peptide is a substance produced by the beta cells in the pancreas with the function to connects insulin's A-chain to its B-chain in the insulin molecule.

Insulin AUC is the area under the curve in a 2 dimension coordinate used to measure the insulin concentration in blood insulin vs. time.

Unfortunately, the method used to calculate AUC may affect the interpretation of whether or not an intervention was effective, according to some researchers.

In support of the above study, the Fahan University of Medical Sciences conducted a cross-sectional study of 425 subjects 35 to 55 y of age, using a food-frequency questionnaire. including in the report of blood pressure, waist circumference, glucose, triacylglycerols, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol to measure the risk of the metabolic syndrome defined based on Adult Treatment Panel III guidelines, after examining the returned questionnaire, researchers found that daily intake of these groups of the population can be classified into 5 patterns, namely,

1. A Western pattern (high in sweets, butter, soda, mayonnaise, sugar, cookies, the tail of a lamb, hydrogenated fat, and eggs)
2. A prudent pattern (high in fish, peas, honey, nuts, juice, dry fruits, vegetable oil, liver and organic meat, and coconuts and low in hydrogenated fat and non-leafy vegetables)
3. A vegetarian pattern (high in potatoes, legumes, fruits rich in vitamin C, rice, green leafy vegetables, and fruits rich in vitamin A),
4. A high-fat dairy pattern (high in high-fat yogurt and high-fat milk and low in low-fat yogurt, peas, and bread),
5. A chicken and plant pattern (high in chicken, fruits rich in vitamin A, green leafy vegetables, and mayonnaise and low in beef, liver, and organic meat)

And in comparison to all 5 groups
1. The western pattern was associated with greater odds of having increased triacylglycerol and blood pressure
2. The prudent pattern was positively associated with a prevalence of low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels
3. The vegetarian dietary pattern was inversely associated with a risk of an abnormal fasting blood glucose level

Adult Treatment Panel III guideline is used as a classification of LDL, Total, and HDL Cholesterol (mg/dL).

Dr. Amini M, the lead author emphasized, " Major dietary patterns were significantly associated with the risk of metabolic syndrome".

In other words, there is no specific diet pattern that can be considered a daily diet in reducing the risk of metabolic syndrome. The mix of ingredients of the above diet selectively may be necessary for people who are at higher risk of such syndrome

Interestingly, in the study to develop baked and extruded functional foods from Metabolic Syndrome (MS) specifically designed ingredient mixes with optimum amino acid makeup using key food ingredients with functional properties such as whole cereals, legumes, skimmed milk powder, along with flaxseeds and fenugreek seeds, researchers after taking into account of other confounders suggested that six ingredient mixes from above of bread and four ingredient mixes each of extruded snack and noodles showed a specifically designed for MS patients who had significantly (p ≤ 0.05) higher lysine, crude protein, ash and fiber and low carbohydrates in compare control whole wheat flour products, hence appropriate for MS patients.

Taking all together, dried peas and bean fibers may be used in conjunction vegetarian diet to provide a strong impact in ameliorating the risk and treatment of the metabolic syndrome.

The Effects of #Catsclaw on #Parkinson's disease, Scientists Suggest

By Kyle J. Norton

Cat's claw found in the tropical jungles of South and Central America, is a genus Uncaria, belonging to the family Rubiaceae, used in traditional medicine for over two thousand years as a tonic, contraceptive, anti-inflammatory, and infectious agent, and to treat diarrhea, rheumatic disorders, acne, diabetes, cancer and diseases of the urinary tract, etc...

The chemical constituents of Cat's claw include ajmalicine, akuammigine, campesterol, catechin, carboxyl alkyl esters, chlorogenic acid, cinchonain, corynantheine, corynoxeine, daucosterol, epicatechin, harman, hirsuteine, hirsutine, iso-pteropodine, etc.

Parkinson's disease is a type of dementia caused by nerve cell dysfunction that produces dopamine in the brain, affecting muscle rigidity, tremors, and changes in speech and gait.

Uncaria tomentosa may be one of the medicinal plants used for reduced symptoms and treatment of Parkinson's disease.

According to a recent study, AC11 (a standardized aqueous extract of Uncaria tomentosa) exhibited scavenging several types of free radicals, decreased lipid peroxidation level and reduced α-synuclein aggregation by 40%.

Dr. Cosentino C. the lead researcher at the Instituto de Ciencias Neurological, said, "Uncaria tomentosa (UT),,... reversed worsening of motor signs in a patient with Parkinson's disease after oral intake"

Further study of Cat's Claw (Uncaria tomentosa) also found that the medical plant enhanced DNA repair and immunity in model systems with the capability of generating neuroprotective effects in neurons.

Although the therapeutic intervention of Cat's claw may exhibit properties against Parkinson's disease, using the medicinal plant should be taken with care.

#Betanin Protects the Digestive Tract DNA Against Damages that Cause Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Researchers Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a class of chronic conditions associated with the inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, including
* Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammation and ulcers found in the innermost lining of the colon and rectum.

* Crohn's disease. is a type of IBD that causes inflammation of the lining of the digestive tract, other than the colon and rectum.

The most common symptoms of IBD are severe diarrhea, abdominal pain, fatigue, and weight loss. Long-term persistent symptoms such as weight loss may be life-threatening.

If you have experienced some of the aforementioned symptoms, please make sure to check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

The causes of IBD are unknown. However, some researchers suggested that the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past few decades that cause the alternation of the ratio of gut microbiota may be the major culprit in facilitating the onset of IBD.

The research of Case Western Reserve University, wrote, "A high-fat diet may lead to specific changes in gut bacteria that could fight harmful inflammation -- a major discovery for patients suffering from Crohn's disease, research indicates. Crohn's disease, a type of inflammatory bowel syndrome, causes debilitating intestinal swelling, cramping, and diarrhea".

Betanin is a phytochemical in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of betacyanins, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.

With an aim to find a treatment for inflammatory bowel disease (IBS), researchers examined the effect of beetroot (Beta vulgaris var. Rubra) products and their major component betanin on the reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and DNA damage in vitro.

In neutrophils isolated from the blood of patients with inflammatory bowel disease--ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD), injection of betanin at 100 μM for 24 h increased DNA damage, according to the comet assay.

However, in Caco-2 cells. injection of betanin at 100 μM for 24 h showed a lesser pronounced stimulation of DNA damage.

Treatment of Caco-2 cells with H2O2 caused a 4-fold increase of DNA strand breaks in comparison to untreated cells, but pre-treatment with betanin reduced DNA damage in these cells.

In other words, betanin exerted a cytotoxic effect against the DNA-alternated cells but inhibited the free radical expression in the induction of DNA damage in normal cells.

More precisely, betanin led to the release of ROS and apoptotic cell death.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, " betanin may exert anti-inflammatory and potentially cancer-preventive activity".

Taken altogether, betanin may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of betanin in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Herbal #Catnip in the Inhibition of the Risk and Progression of #LungCancer, Researchers Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Catnip may have a potential and substantial effect in reducing the risk and treatment of lung cancer, some scientists suggested.

Catnip is also known as catswort, or catmint, a plant of Nepeta, belonging to the family of Lamiaceae, native to Europe and Asia, used in herbal medicine as an insect repellant and to treat digestive disorders, children's restlessness and nervousness, fevers, colds, and flu, skin irritations stimulate sweating, promote menstruation, etc...

Ingredients
Terpenoid nepetalactone, α-Pinene, β-Pinene, Cyclohexen-1-yl-methyl ketone, Triplal, Thymol, Nepetalactone, Nepetalactone, etc...

Lung cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the tissues of the lung. At the later stage, the cancerous cell may invade other healthy tissues and organs a distance away from the original site.

According to statistics, In 2015, approximately 26,600 Canadians will be diagnosed with lung cancer and 20,900 will die of it.

According to the investigation of the anti-cancer effect of extracts isolated from catnip containing sub-fractions (ND-1-ND-15) of ND using human lung cancer cells (A-549) experiment, the selected sub-fractions of the chloroform extract demonstrated significant activity in reduced the cell viability of A-549 cells, through alternated the cancer cell structures and arrangement in a concentration-dependent manner.

In a classification of the effect of each individual subfraction, researchers found that the ND-10 fraction induces the greatest cytotoxicity in the lowest dose compared to other fractions with ND-1 does not cause any cytotoxicity even at higher concentrations.

In comparison to other cancer cell lines, human lung cancer cells (A-549) were found to be more sensitive to the application of the extracts.

Further differentiation of the Nepeta cataria L. anti-cancer treatment effect was recorded in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia of version 2015 and belongs to one of the Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Microfluidic chip technology, researchers at the joint study led by the Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine conducted a study based on total flavonoid extracted from Nepeta cataria L. (TFS) on the risk of human lung cancer cell line A549 using the microfluidic device and Flow Cytometry assays, suggested that the bioactive chemicals exert a significant activity in inhibited cancer cell proliferation and tumor progression and invasion through mRNA expression of MicroRNA-126 (miR-126) which plays an important role involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in inhibition of human cancer progression, regulating apoptosis of cancer cells.

Additionally, the anti-lung cancer expression was attributed to ameliorating the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), a potent angiogenic factor with the function to trigger the development of new blood vessels to supply nutrients and oxygen to ignite cancer cell proliferation and inhibited the expression of the PI3K signaling pathway which is correlated to the cancer aggression and invasive malignancy.

Researchers also indicated that according to the Flow Cytometry assay, the phytochemicals also exhibit the expression of PTEN (phosphatase and tensin homolog deleted on chromosome 10) PTEN gene in initiated tumor suppressible activity through expression PI3K-AKT pathway in induced cell cycle arrest or apoptosis in human cancer cells

Dr. Jiaxin Fan, the lead author, after taking into account other confounders said, " Taking all these results into consideration we can draw a conclusion that TFS may be used as a novel therapeutic agent for NSCLC in the near future".

The information findings postulated that herbal catnip with abundant bioactive compounds may be considered a functional food in reduced risk and treatment of human lung cancer, depending on further differentiation.

#Healthyfood #Broccoli Inhibits the #OxidativeStress that Promotes #NeurodegenerativeDiseases (NDDs), According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Neurodegenerative diseases are a class of conditions associated with the progressive loss of neurons in the brain caused by several mechanisms, including toxicity and oxygen deficiency.

The most common disease associated with neurodegenerative diseases is dementia, a cluster of conditions including Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and Huntington’s disease, leading to a negative influence on the body's functioning, including balance, movement, talking, breathing, and heart function.

There is no single cause of the progressive death of brain neurons. Epidemiologically, genetic preposition, and medical conditions, such as alcoholism, brain cancer, or a stroke in the brain are some of the most common prevalent factors found in patients with neurological diseases.

Another risk factors associated with the disease prevalence are the increase in age, the most consistent risk factor for developing a neurodegenerative disease, especially AD or PD, as the disease has been found in over 60% of the population aged 65 and beyond compared to another group.

A prolonged period of toxins and toxic chemicals accumulated that affect brain function also has a strong impact to induce the onset of the disease.

The progressive loss of neurons induced neurological and neuropsychological signs and symptoms have also been found in comparison to the stage of disease onset of patients.

Dementia is a condition of deterioration of the cognitive ability of memory, thinking, language, judgment, and behavior, gradually.

The loss of mental ability in patients with dementia in most cases is severe enough to interfere with people's every life. Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of dementia in aging people.

According to the statistics, about 5-8% of all people over the age of 65 have some form of dementia, and this number doubles every five years and above that age.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belonging to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color and the mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant on the continent of Europe.

According to the WHO, neurological disorders, ranging from epilepsy to Alzheimer's disease, from stroke to headache, affect up to one billion people worldwide.

On finding a potential plant that treats age-related diseases, researchers examined the effects of sulforaphane (SF), derived from the hydrolysis of the glucosinolate glucoraphanin mainly present in Brassica vegetables, anti-neuroprotective effects

The study included 16 subjects randomized, into a 3-phase crossover dietary trial of standard broccoli, high glucosinolate broccoli, and water.

According to the results of the trial,
* Sulforaphane (SF) inhibited the oxidative stress that results from an imbalance of pro-oxidant/antioxidant homeostasis associated with abnormal production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) in the damage of neurons-induced neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs).

* In a neonatal hypoxia/ischemia brain injury model, SF significantly increased Nrf2 and HO-1 expression involved in the production of antioxidants enzymes in the host against oxidative stress accompanied by reduced infarct volume.

* In a rat model of traumatic brain injury (TBI), the postinjury administration of SF reduced the BBB impairment and cerebral edema after TBI.

* In chronic degenerative diseases, SF inhibited the increase of oxidative stress, the impaired protein-folding function of the endoplasmatic reticulum, and deficient proteasome- and autophagic-mediated clearance of damaged proteins accelerated the accumulation of Aβ peptides and Tau protein in AD.

Taken altogether, the consequences of these results suggest that the broccoli process abundantly SF may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs), pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal #Andrographis Inhibits the Onset of Skin Cancer By Cell-Cycle Arrest, Researchers Discover

By Kyle J. Norton

Andrographis, the forgotten herbal medicine may consist of potency in reduced risk and treatment of skin cancer with fewer or no side effects, the renowned institute study suggested.

Andrographis paniculata also known as Andrographis is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka. It has been used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic in treating the common cold, flu, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia,.....

Skin cancer is a medical condition of uncontrolled growth of abnormal skin cells and is often detected at an early stage.

According to the joint study led by Sri Krishnadevaraya University, the leaf extract of Andrographis nallamalayana (AN) significantly reduced the viability and survival of cells in skin cancer cell lines on A375 and B16F10 as shown in MTT assay and clonogenic assays.

The anti-skin cancer effects of the leaf extract were also associated with ameliorating the expression of Bcl-2, an anti-apoptotic protein that induced the expression of a pro-apoptotic mechanism.

Dr. Purushotham G, the lead author said, "The extracts of AN exhibited significant anti-proliferative, anti-inflammatory and pro-apoptotic activities on melanoma skin cancer cell lines"

In immunofluorescence analysis, leaf extract Andrographis nallamalayana (AN), significantly attenuates the expression of NF-κB target genes with function in regulated cytotoxicity expression in the tumor cell.

Furthermore, the extract also exhibited direct anticancer activity on cancer cells by cell-cycle arrest at the G0/G1 phase through induction of cell-cycle inhibitory protein p27 involved cell proliferation and decreased expression of cyclin-dependent kinase 4 (CDK4) in cell controlling, probably through enhancing immunomodulatory property.

Taking together, there is no doubt that Andrographis processes a pharmaceutical value in reducing the risk and controlling skin cancer, but the intake of large quantities can only be prescribed by an herbalist.

#Antioxidant #Lycopene Inhibits the Risk and Progression Of #EsophagealCancer, According to Scientists

By Kyle J. Norton

Esophagus, an organ in vertebrates, is the tube that leads food from the pharynx to the stomach. Esophageal cancer is a medical condition that starts in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the esophageal tissue caused by the alternation of cell DNA.

At the advanced stage, most cases of esophageal cancer after penetrating the wall of the esophagus tend to spread to the lymph node around the bottom of the esophagus, stomach, and chest, then to the distant parts of the body.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2019, approximately 17,650 new esophageal cancer cases will be diagnosed, including 13,750 in men and 3,900 in women.

Also, in 2019, esophageal cancer will also cause the death of 16,080 Americans, including 13,020 in men and 3,060 in women.

The 5-year survival rate of people diagnosed in the local stage of esophageal cancer is 45%, much less than other cancer, including 100% of breast cancer.

2 common types of esophageal cancer are* Adenocarcinomas are the most common type of esophageal cancer in the United States, which occurred in the mucus-forming gland cells in the lower part of the esophagus.

* Squamous cancer occurs in the flat, thin cells that line the surface of the upper part of the esophagus.

Some researchers suggested that the risk of esophageal cancer can be reduced by
* Medicine
Taking medicine such as aspirin and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may reduce the risk of Esophageal cancer. Researchers at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center suggested that aspirin and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs disrupt the pathway, slow the growth of abnormal cells and facilitate the normal process of apoptosis.

* Quit smoking and quit-heavy alcohol drinking
Heavy alcohol drinking and smoking account for over 90% of all squamous cancer.

* Avoid very hot foods
Food that is very hot can cause damage to the esophagus. Eating very hot foods for a prolonged period of time can cause an infection that leads to esophageal cancer.

* Reducing intake of fried, baked, and roasted food
Fried, baked and roasted food contains acrylamide, a potentially cancer-causing carcinogenic chemical. In the animal lab, studies showed that large exposures to acrylamide may cause health problems, including damage to the nervous system and increased risk of cancer, including esophageal cancer.

* Maintaining a healthy weight
Researchers suggested that avoiding excessive weight gain and obesity may lower your risk of developing esophageal adenocarcinoma.

Lycopene is a phytochemical in the class of carotenoids, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world's diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.

With an aim to find a natural compound for the treatment of esophageal cancer, researchers investigated the effect of lycopene and β-carotene on the viability of EC109 human esophageal squamous carcinoma cells.

According to the results from the tested assays, lycopene and β-carotene (5-40 µM) at a dose- and time-dependent showed a significant effect in reducing the viability of the EC109 cells.

Furthermore, lycopene and β-carotene also exhibited the enzyme expression of PPARγ associated with the inhibition of cancer migration and angiogenesis and protein p21 associated with cell cycle arrest and apoptosis regulation.

Moreover, lycopene and β-carotene also inhibited the protein associated with cell cycle division and tumor cell repopulation.

Based on the results, researchers said, " the inhibition of EC109 cell viability by lycopene and β-carotene involves PPARγ signaling pathways and the modulation of p21WAF1/CIP1, cyclin D1, and COX-2 expression".

Additionally, in the study by Zhejiang University to compare the higher intake of beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, lycopene, beta-cryptoxanthin, lutein, and zeaxanthin reduced esophageal cancer risk, researchers found that * The pooled ORs of esophageal cancer risk are 0.58 (95% CI 0.44, 0.77), 0.81 (95% CI 0.70, 0.94), 0.75 (95% CI 0.64, 0.86), 0.80 (95% CI 0.66, 0.97), and 0.71 (95% CI 0.59, 0.87), respectively.

* Alpha-carotene, lycopene, and beta-cryptoxanthin showed protection against esophageal squamous cell cancer, and beta-carotene showed protective effects against esophageal adenocarcinoma in studies located in Europe and North America, according to the subgroup analysis.

Collectively, researchers wrote, " Alpha-carotene, lycopene, and beta-cryptoxanthin showed protection against esophageal squamous cell cancer. This meta-analysis suggested that a higher intake of carotenoids (beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, lycopene, beta-cryptoxanthin, lutein, and zeaxanthin) is associated with a lower risk of esophageal cancer".

Taken altogether, lycopene used alone or combined with another herbal remedy may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of esophageal cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
