#Antioxidant #Sinigrin Inhibit the Risk of #TongueCancer, Researchers Find

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a bioactive ingredient for the treatment of tongue cancer with no side effects, according to studies.
Tongue cancer is a medical condition caused by irregular cell growth in the tissue of the tongue, due to the alternation of cell DNA.

Most cases of tongue cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the tongue. At the early stage, tongue cancer patients may not experience any size due to the very small tumors.

However, at the advanced stage, patients may experience symptoms of persistent tongue and/or jaw pain as the tumor has pressed on the nearby nerve cells, a lump or tumor inside the mouth. a white or red patch on the gums, tongue, tonsil, or lining in the mouth, and persistent sore throat and difficulty swallowing or chewing.

If you have some of the above symptoms, please make sure to check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

There are many risk factors associated with the disease, including long-term use of tobacco, excessive alcohol drinking, and sun exposure to your lips.

Some researchers suggested that the sexually transmitted virus human papillomavirus (HPV) and people with a weakened immune systems also have been found in patients with tongue cancer.

The Cleveland Clinic wrote in the article Oropharyngeal Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) Infection

"Human papillomavirus (HPV), commonly known as the virus that causes genital warts and cervical cancer in women, is increasingly being recognized now as a cause of infections that colonize the back of the mouth (throat or oropharynx), including the tongue base and tonsils, and potentially a cause of cancer of the head and neck".

The results strongly suggested that people who carry the HPV virus in their mouth are at an increased risk of tongue cancer, compared to those without.

Sinigrin is a phytochemical glucosinolate, belonging to the family of glucosides found abundantly in Brussels sprouts, broccoli, the seeds of black mustard, etc.

Scientists searching for natural compounds with inhibitory activity against tongue carcinogenesis examined the effects of indole-3-carbinol (I3C) and sinigrin (SIN) on the initiation and post-initiation phases of tongue cancer.

Selected male ACI/N rats. induced tongue cancer by the injection of 4-nitroquinoline 1-oxide (4-NQO) divided into
* Group 1 was given 4-NQO (10 ppm) in the drinking water for 12 weeks, starting at 7 weeks of age;

* Groups 2 and 3 were given 4-NQO and fed the diets containing I3C (1,000 ppm) and SIN (1,200 ppm) for 14 weeks, respectively, starting at 6 weeks of age;

* Groups 4 and 5 were given 4-NQO and then they were fed I3C and SIN-containing diets for 23 weeks, respectively, starting one week after 4-NQO exposure;

* Groups 6 and 7 were given I3C and SIN alone, respectively, during the experiment; and

* Group 8 served as an untreated control.
At the end of the experiment at week 37, the incidence of tongue neoplasms (squamous cell papilloma and carcinoma) in group 2 (1/15, 7%), group 3 (1/15, 7%), group 4 (3/15, 20%) or group 5 (2/15, 13%) was significantly smaller than that in group 1 (12/17, 71%).

Group groups 2, 3, and 5 showed no tongue carcinomas developed. In other words, the injection of I3C and SIN restored the infected cell to healthy levels induced by the 4-NQO.

The group treated with I3C and SIN also showed reduced levels of the incidence of preneoplastic lesions such as hyperplasia and dysplasia.

In other words, I3C and SIN not only are effective against tongue cancer but also inhibit the progression of preneoplastic lesions of the tongue in group 2 (11/15, 73%), group 3 (10/15, 67%), group 4 (11/15, 73%) or group 5 (10/15, 67%) was significantly lower than that in group 1 (17/17, 100%) (P = 0.04 or P = 0.02).

Furthermore, There were no tongue neoplasms in rats of groups 6, 7, and 8.

Moreover, the Administration of I3C and SIN also caused significant decreases in the number and area of silver-stained nucleolar organizer regions protein (AgNORs) in the expression of the tongue tumor pathology.

Dr. Tanaka T and colleagues wrote in the final report, " I3C and SIN inhibited rat tongue carcinogenesis in both the initiation and post-initiation phases when administered in these respective phases together with, or following treatment with, 4-NQO".

Taken altogether, sinigrin (SIN) used alone or combined with I3C may be effective for the prevention and treatment of tongue cancer, pending the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of SIN in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Antioxidant #Alliin In the inhibition of #LiverCancer, Researchers Find

By Kyle J. Norton

Liver cancer is a medical condition caused by irregular cell growth in the liver tissue.
According to the statistics assessed by cancer experts, in 2019, approximately 42,030 adults (29,480 men and 12,550 women) in the United States will be diagnosed with primary liver cancer.

Believe it or not, since 1980, the incidence of liver cancer has tripled. Between 2006 and 2015, the number of people diagnosed with the disease increased by approximately 3% annually.

The most common preventable causes of liver cancer are excessive alcohol drinking over time, chronic infection by hepatitis B and C, and cirrhosis.

Types of liver cancer include
* Hepatocellular carcinoma, the most common type of liver cancer accounts for 75 percent of all cases.

* Cholangiocarcinoma is a cancer of the bile duct, which is the small, tube-like bile ducts in the liver that carry bile to the gallbladder to help with digestion.

* Liver Angiosarcoma is a rare form of liver cancer that develops quickly and

* Hepatoblastoma also is a rare type of liver cancer found in children, particularly in those under age 3.

The most common symptoms of liver cancer are upper abdominal pain., abdominal swelling, jaundice, and white, chalky stools, accompanied by general symptoms shared by other types of cancer including unintended weight loss, gastrointestinal discomfort, loss of appetite, and persistent fatigue.

If you have experienced some of the aforementioned symptoms with no signs of receding, please make sure that you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide,. a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belonging to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.

With an aim to find a potential ingredient for the treatment of liver cancer with little or no side effects, researchers in the cancer team at the Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique examined the increasing fertilization of soil resulting in an increased alliin content of the powders on liver cancer animal model.

According to the results, of garlic powders administered to rats for 2 weeks (5% of the diet), administration of the different garlic powders demonstrated a 35-60% reduction in DNA damage induced by N-nitroso dimethylamine (NDMA) in rat liver.

In examining the increased alliin content of the garlic powder, researchers found that the presence of alliin was associated strongly with a proportional decrease in NDMA-induced DNA alteration.

Believe it or not, the increased levels of alliin in the garlic powder content did not have an additional effect on DNA damage induced by aflatoxin B1 in the liver or by 1,2-dimethylhydrazine in the colon, compared to the efficacy in the liver.

In other words, garlic powders regardless of the levels of alliin did not modify the genotoxic activity which is the direct-acting carcinogen methyl nitrosourea in the colon.

Taken altogether, alliin may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of liver cancer, depending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of alliin in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Healthyfood #Tomatoes Are Associated with Normalizing Blood Pressure in #Hypertension Patients, Researchers Show

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a bioactive ingredient for the prevention and treatment of hypertension with no side effects, according to studies.

Hypertension is a medical condition characterized by abnormally high blood pressure.

Blood pressure is a measurement of a force against the walls of blood vessels that the heart pumps blood around the body.

Chronic and untreated high blood pressure has been associated epidemiologically with an increased risk of heart disease and stroke.

According to the statistics provided by the American Heart Association, there are over 103 million Americans living with high blood pressure.

In other words, nearly half of all adults in the US have hypertension.

According to the new definition of the measurement of blood pressure, the percentage of U.S. adults with high blood pressure jumped from 32 percent under the old definition to nearly 46 percent.

Most people with mild hypertension can control their blood pressure by a change of lifestyle such as a change to diet and exercise.

There are many prevalent factors associated with the onset of hypertension, including age, ethnicity and gender, diet, physical inactivity, exercise, and smoking.

Some researchers suggested widespread hypertension in obese subjects may be correlated to the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past few decades.

Dr. Lia Taylor, the lead scientist wrote, "Diets high in fat and cholesterol have been linked to weight gain and hypertension, and T cell activation has been suggested to mediate these diet-induced changes in male animal models".

And, "a 4wk-HF diet increased BP and decreased renal anti-inflammatory T cells in female DSS rats. The loss of renal anti-inflammatory T cells is expected to lead to a more pro-inflammatory immune cell profile that may sensitize female DSS rats to HF-diet-induced increases in BP".

Tomato is red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, tomatoes are cultivated worldwide for commercial purposes and often in the greenhouse.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of hypertension with no side effects, researchers assessed whether the addition of standardized tomato extract (STE) or acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) to standard antihypertensive therapy can improve BP control in patients with arterial hypertension (HT).

The study included 82 high-risk hypertensive patients with primary HT at high to a very high total CV risk were randomized in a blinded fashion to one of two groups, i.e. the ASA and STE groups.

STE treated group showed a statistically significant reduction in 24-h systolic BP, diastolic BP, and mean arterial pressure values measured in ABPM after four weeks compared to ASA treated group.

Furthermore, after four weeks of treatment, the STE group exhibited a statistically significant reduction in pulse pressure (PP) during the daytime and during 24 h.
Moreover, STE treatment in obese patients also significantly decreased the day PP.

Based on the results, researchers said, "The results of this study show that the addition of STE to standard antihypertensive therapy improves BP control in hypertensive patients with high CV risk. This effect, together with the anti-aggregatory effect, may indicate the pleiotropic effect of tomato extract."

Additionally, in the study of 65 patients with arterial hypertension and high cardiovascular risk. researchers compared the influence of adding acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) or standardized tomato extract (STE) to standard hypotensive therapy on the values of arterial pressure and the daily blood pressure profiles of patients with hypertension and high cardiovascular risk.

All patients evaluated with a high risk of primary hypertension were randomly allocated in a blinded fashion to one of two groups (ASA or STE).

Similar to the aforementioned study, the blood pressure values during the day, during the night, and in 24-h BP profiles obtained with ABPM were significantly lower in the STE group, compared to the ASA group, after 4 weeks of treatment.

The addition of STE to standard hypotensive treatment resulted in a favorable increase in the nocturnal fall of diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (by 6.5%) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) (by 3.3%).

In other words, tomatoes normalized the blood pressure against the risk of CVD regardless of the levels of blood pressure.

Dr. Osińska AN, the lead scientist wrote in the final report, "The use of STE is significant in HT patients with high total cardiovascular risk; it is associated with better BP control and improvements in the daily BP profile.".

Taken altogether, tomatoes may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of hypertension, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

The Effects of#Prebiotics #Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) Isolated from #Artichoke on #HumanHealth

By Kyle J. Norton

Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a liver protective and detoxified agent, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas, bloating, etc.

Fructooligosaccharides (FOS), are oligosaccharides, a molecule made up of a small group of these sugar,

Due to its natural source of sugar and low in calories, FOS may be used as an alternative sweetener as intake of FOS does not cause a spike in blood sugar.

FOS are considered prebiotics. Intake of FOS can increase the levels of good bacteria in the intestine, leading to a healthy ratio of gut microbiota.

Digestively, FOS contains high levels of soluble fiber which has been found to improve bowel function. Consumption of FOS also increased fecal bolus and the frequency of depositions, while a dose of 4-15 g/day given to healthy subjects has been found to reduce constipation.

According to the study, FOS also showed anti-toxicity, carcinogenicity, and genotoxic effects.

FOS improved mineral absorption by decreasing levels of pH in the colon, thus facilitating the absorption of mineral ions from the intestine, mainly calcium and magnesium

Furthermore, FOS has also been found in studies to decrease levels of serum cholesterol, and triacylglycerols, the lead causes of cardiovascular diseases.

By modulating the levels of phospholipids, FOS lowers the risk of coronary heart disease, inflammation, or cancer, particularly colon cancer.

FOS are increasingly included in food products and infant formulas for their prebiotic effect in stimulating the growth of nonpathogenic intestinal microflora.

In the examined the effects of chronic ingestion of short-chain fructooligosaccharides (FOS), an indigestible carbohydrate, on hepatic glucose production, insulin-mediated glucose metabolism, erythrocyte insulin binding, and blood lipids in 12 healthy volunteers selected received either 20 g FOS/d or sucrose for 4 wk in a double-blind crossover design, researchers found that the mean (+/- SEM) basal hepatic glucose production was lower after FOS than after sucrose consumption, through the effects on insulin-stimulated glucose metabolism in healthy subjects.

Taken altogether, artichoke processed many health benefits and may be used as a functional remedy for disease prevention in healthy subjects, pending the validation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Healthyfood #BroccoliSprout Exhibits Antioxidant Activities in Reducing the Risk of Asthma, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Sulforaphane, the main chemical constituent of broccoli Sprouts may activate anti-inflammatory activity in the open upper airway for reduced risk of asthma and asthma complications.

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the airway of the lung with recurring symptoms, such as wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing. The disease affects people of all ages and mostly starts during childhood.

Cruciferous vegetables are a group of vegetables belonging to the family Brassicaceae, including cauliflower, cabbage, cress, bok choy, broccoli, etc.

According to the study from the UCLA team, in a total of 65 participating volunteers, 3 days of oral administration of broccoli or preparations sprout of 100 grams significantly increased antioxidant enzymes in comparison with the placebo group.

At maximum doses of 200 grams, broccoli sprout induced a significant increase of detoxified(GSTP1) and antibody NQO1, enzymes.

In support of the above, the phase II antioxidant enzymes in the human upper airway insisted, broccoli sprouts demonstrated the potential antioxidant effect to reduce the inflammation of oxidative stress in the induction of airway disease, such as asthma.

A randomized controlled trial in healthy young adults, also suggested that chemical compound isothiocyanates found in cruciferous vegetable, including broccoli sprout, exhibited anti-inflammatory effects through altered serum concentrations of interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, C-reactive protein (CRP), in increasing the presence of inflammation in the body tumor, and necrosis factor (TNF) α,, involved in systemic inflammation.

Intake of cruciferous vegetables(broccoli sprouts) has shown to reduce the circulation of proinflammatory cytokines, namely IL-6 through inhibited the expression of abnormal function of gene Glutathione S-Transferase Theta 1(GSTT1) metabolism in lower levels of glutathione, the antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties.

Dr. Navarro SL, the lead researcher said, " IL-6 concentrations were significantly lower on day 14 of (the double-dose cruciferous) (2xC) and (cruciferous plus apiaceous (carrot family) 1xC+A diets than with the basal diet,...respectively" and " Twenty-four-hour urinary isothiocyanate excretion was not associated with any of the inflammation markers overall; however, IL-6 was inversely associated with total isothiocyanate excretion in GSTM1(The antioxidant enzyme)".

Taking all together, the intake of broccoli sprouts regularly is associated to lower the effect of proinflammatory cytokines and increase detoxification and enzymes in ameliorated airway inflammation in patients with asthma.

#Ginger Inhibits All Parameters Associated with the Onset of #CardiovascularDiseases, Researchers Suggest

By Kyle J. Norton

Ginger may have a profound and positive effect in reducing the risk and treatment of cardiovascular disease, some studies found.

Cardiovascular disease is a medical condition associated with the heart and blood vessels, depending on the location of blood clots.

The most common causes of cardiovascular disease are atherosclerosis caused by plaque accumulated on the wall of the arteries, leading to reduced rich oxygenated blood flow to the heart, a major cause of the death of heart cells.

According to the John Hopkins statistics, approximately 84 million people in the US suffer from some form of cardiovascular disease, causing about 2,200 deaths a day, averaging one death every 40 seconds.

Sadly know that almost one out of every three deaths results from cardiovascular disease.

Epidemiologically, certain risk factors are found to associate with the onset of the condition, including lack of exercise, diabetes, use of tobacco, gender, genetic preposition, and excessive alcohol drinking.

However, poor diet was one of the preventable risk factors in the Western world. Researchers suggested that there is no coincidence but a correlation of the widespread cardiovascular disease in the US and the promotion of the Western diet over the past many decades.

A diet high in saturated and trans fat, red meat, and processed food and few in fruits and vegetables and whole-grain has a strong and positive implication in the promotion of the onset of the disease.

Dr. Sonia S. Anand, the lead scientist in the study "Food Consumption and its Impact on Cardiovascular Disease: Importance of Solutions Focused on the globalized food system" said, "Evidence from different countries, age/race/ethnicity/socioeconomic groups suggest the health effects studies of foods, macronutrients, and dietary patterns on CVD appear to be far more consistent though regional knowledge gaps are highlighted".

And, "Poor quality diets are high in refined grains and added sugars, salt, unhealthy fats, and animal-source foods; and low in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes, fish and nuts ( are associated to the onset of CVD)"

Therefore, by teaching the general public the role of diet that can prevent CVD, the writers continued, "A healthier food supply enables individuals to make healthier choices. Developing food systems that underpin healthier dietary patterns based on our consensus noted above involves improving the food supply by producing more heart-healthy foods and fewer foods associated with CVD".

These results clearly stated a healthy diet high in fruits and vegetables, whole grains less saturated and trans fat, red meat, and processed foods can substantially reduce the risk of CVD.

Ginger officinale or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

With an aim to reconfirm the effects of ginger for the treatment of many aspects of cardiovascular disease, Dr. Nicoll R and colleagues conducted a study to look into ginger anti-cardiovascular disease activity.

In the animal model, the application of ginger demonstrated a significant anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiplatelet, hypotensive, and hypolipidemic effect to protect the tested animal against the onset of cardiovascular disease.

In the human trial, dosages of 5 g or more demonstrated significant antiplatelet activity.

These results suggested that ginger may have the potential to offer not only a cheaper natural alternative to conventional agents but one with significantly lower side effects.

Furthermore in the concern of the widespread of cardiovascular diseases in the Western world and the leading cause of death worldwide, researchers at the Katedra Technologii Żywienia Człowieka evaluated the effects of the kitchen spice on the condition.

Ginger and the selected spices showed a strong cardioprotective effect through their antioxidant, chemopreventive, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory properties.

At the final report of the study, Dr. Kulczyński B, said, "Selected spices (garlic, cinnamon, ginger, coriander, and turmeric) (may be used )in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases".

Taken altogether, ginger may be considered a functional food for the prevention and combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of cardiovascular disease with no side effects.

#Herbal #Coltsfoot Inhibits the #OxidativeStress That Promotes #NeurologicalDisease, Scientists Suggest

By Kyle J. Norton

Neuroprotection is a process to preserve the neuronal structure and/or function against the death or gradual death of neurons, including using medicines and herbs.

In other words, neuroprotection protects the neuronal integrity against the reduction in the rate of neuronal loss over time inducing neurological disease, including neurodegenerative disease.

Neurodegenerative disease is the class of conditions associated with the progressive loss of neurons mainly occurring in older adults, including dementia. The most common dementia in the US is Alzheimer`s disease (AD).

Alzheimer's disease is an irreversible, progressive brain disorder caused by the slowly lost of neuron in the brain that affects memory and thinking skills and, eventually, the ability to carry out the simplest tasks as the disease progress into an advanced stage.

According to the statistic, dementia affects over 47.5 million people worldwide, approximately 58 percent are living in low and middle-income countries.

Believe it or not, 5.8 million Americans of all ages are living with Alzheimer's dementia in 2019 and two-thirds of people with Alzheimer's disease are women.

Conventionally, as of today, there is no cure for dementia. Treatment of dementia is focusing to improve dementia symptoms and slow down the progression of the disease.

Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara) is a perennial herbaceous plant, genus Tussilago, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia. The herb has been used for thousands of years to treat asthma, various coughs, bronchial congestion, respiratory disorders, headaches and obstruction in the nasal passage, etc.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of the neurological disorder, researchers examined the neuroprotective effect of Tussilagone (TSL) on LPS-induced neuronal cell death.

According to the tested assays, 4 sesquiterpenoids isolated from the TSL showed a significant effect against the production of nitric oxide, prostaglandin E2, and tumor necrosis factor-α in LPS-treated BV-2 cells.

In other words, the sesquiterpenoids inhibited the production of free radicals and proinflammatory expression associated with the BV-2 cells' oxidative stress induced by LPS.

More precisely, the inhibition against the initiation of oxidative stress was attributed to the sesquiterpenoid's activity in blocking the activation of the proinflammatory (NF-κB) pathway

Furthermore, the sesquiterpenoids also inhibited LPS-induced neuronal cell death in the co-culture system by inhibiting the expression of NF-κB pathway and scavenging of ROS.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "sesquiterpenoids from Tussilago farfara may have beneficial therapeutic potential for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases through inhibition of microglial activation".

Taken altogether, coltsfoot may be considered a remedy for treating neurological disease, pending confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
