Scientists from various respectable institutions suggested that out of many herbs, garlic may be one of the most powerful whole-food medicine in reducing the risk of gastric cancer due to the effects of phytochemicals.

In fact, the effectiveness of garlic in reduced risk and treatment of gastric cancer probably is due to its antioxidants, such as Diallyl disulfide(DADS) and extract in inhibition of cancer cells through the influence of cell cycle division and negation of proinflammatory pathways.

Some researchers suggested using garlic as chemopreventive therapy, as the experiment showed that garlic scavenges free radicals, and inhibits cell proliferation of tumor growth.

Therefore, people who add an additional portion of garlic into their diet may see the risk of gastric cancer development reduced substantially.

In seeking natural therapy with no side effects, scientists may have found a whole fruit for the prevention and treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases, according to studies.
Inflammation is a natural immune response that protects our body against the invasion of stimuli and foreign pathogens.

During the acute phase of infection, the immune first line of defense activates the protein associated with the production of blood palettes to cover the wound and inflammatory cytokines to the site of injury with an aim to prevent and kill off microorganisms.

However, the overproduction of inflammatory cytokines not only can induce fever, swelling, and pain in the affected area but also damage to the nearby cells and tissue, leading to the formation of scars.

Chronic inflammatory diseases are the class of conditions involved in low-grade inflammation of the affected tissue or organ. Some researchers suggested that the immune system has evolved over thousands of years to kill off foreign invasive pathogens within a period of time, normally between 3 to 8 weeks. If the immune fails to do so, it will adapt to the new change, leading to chronic inflammation.

There are several factors that cause the onset of the conditions. Some scientists indicated untreated acute inflammation, such as an infection or injury and an autoimmune disorder involving the immune system mistakenly attacking healthy tissue are the most causes of chronic inflammatory diseases.

Certain risk factors such as long-term exposure to irritants, such as industrial chemicals or polluted air, the increase in age, being obese or obesity, low sex hormone production, sleep disorder, and diet.

On cells of healthy individuals, according to the flow cytometry methods, injection of the fruit significantly inhibited the overexpression of IFN-γ(+), a cytokine that is critical for innate and adaptive immunity and CD4(+), in the activation of the cells of the innate immune system, B-lymphocytes, cytotoxic T cells.

The application also showed to increase the levels of anti-inflammatory cytokines which play a critical role in reducing the risk of inflammation.

These results suggested that papaya suppressed the pro-inflammatory cytokines through its anti-inflammatory response mediated through Tregs, a specialized subpopulation of T cells that act to suppress the immune response.

In other words, papaya modulates the systematic immune response through a set of mechanisms in the acute phase of infection.

Furthermore, in finding a natural ingredient or whole food for the treatment of patients with sepsis, a serious unbalanced hyperinflammatory condition, researchers evaluated the effect of mangiferin (MF), a natural glucosyl xanthone found in both mango and papaya.


The application of mangiferin (MF) was found epidemiologically to attenuate cecal ligation and puncture-induced mortality and acute lung injury (ALI), by reducing systemic and pulmonary inflammatory responses.

In Sepsis patients, pretreatment with MF inhibits sepsis-activated mitogen-activated protein kinases which play a critical role in directing cellular responses to a diverse array of stimuli, and nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells signaling (NF-κB) associated with the production of pro-inflammatory cytokine for cell survival.

These actions indicated that pretreatment with MF inhibits the production of proinflammatory mediators associated with immune responses.

In the tested animal, MF dose-dependently exhibited the expression and activity of heme oxygenase (HO)-1, a gene that plays a critical role in the prevention of vascular inflammation. in the lung of septic mice.

Dr.Gong X, the lead scientist said, 'MF attenuates sepsis by up-regulation of HO-1 that protects against sepsis-induced ALI through inhibiting inflammatory signaling and proinflammatory mediators", after taking into account co and confounders.

Interestingly, in the evaluated fermented papaya preparation, a functional food supplement, researchers at the Touro College of Pharmacy also found that the fermentation exhibited anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunostimulatory (at the level of the mucous membrane), through a set of bioactive compounds found in the fruit.

Taken altogether, papaya may be considered a functional fruit for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with chronic inflammation.

Scientists may have found a pungent kitchen spice that processes the potency for the prevention and treatment of cancers, some studies found.

Cancer is a class of chronic illness characterized by cell growth disorderly and uncontrollably in some tissue and organs in the body.

Most cases of cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of specific tissue or organs in the early stage.

Most patients in this stage depending on the type of cancer do not experience any symptoms. However, at the advanced stage, as the tumor has penetrated deeply into the layers of tissue, most cancer can suppress the nearby tissue and nerve cells, causing localized symptoms and severe pain.

At this stage, the cancerous cells can travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy tissue and organs.

The exact causes of cancer are unknown. Epidemiological studies, depending on the type of cancer suggested that aging, sun exposure, radiation exposure, toxic chemicals viruses and bacteria, certain hormones, and family history of cancer are some most common prevalent risk factors of cancer.

Some researchers suggested. obesity or overweight, poor diet, and lifestyle are the most common preventable risk factors associated with cancer onset in the US.

According to the statistic, approximately 200,000 new cancer diagnoses and 80,800 deaths from cancer in Canada in 2017.

Lung, colorectal, breast, and prostate cancer account for about half of all cancer diagnoses and deaths.

About 1 in 2 Canadians will develop cancer in their lifetimes and 1 in 4 will die of the disease.

In the concern of the prevalence of overweight and obesity is increasing worldwide and a link between obesity and cancer is growing, Dr. Karen Basen-Engquis, the lead author launched an investigation to examine obesity and cancer risk.

At the final report of the experiment, the team said, " Recent research has found that as the body mass index increases by 5 kg/m2, cancer mortality increases by 10%." and "Additionally, studies of patients who have had bariatric surgery for weight loss report reductions in cancer incidence and mortality, particularly for women".

These results clearly suggested the risk of cancer is elevated in the obese and overweight population compared to healthy-weight individuals.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

On finding a natural whole food for the treatment of cancer with no side effects, researchers looked into ginger's antiemetic and anticancer activities.

By examing the phytochemistry, bioactivity, and molecular targets of ginger constituents, especially 6-shogaol, researchers suggested that the content of 6-shogaol found very low in fresh ginger, but significantly higher after steaming exerts a significant anti-cancer activity.
Dr. Wang CZ, after taking into account co and confounders, said, "6-shogaol can be served as a lead compound for new drug discovery" and " The lead compound derivative synthesis, bioactivity evaluation, and computational docking provide a promising opportunity to identify novel anticancer compounds originating from the ginger".

These results suggested that ligands on ginger-derived exosome-like nanovesicles (GDENs) inhibit tumor growth on a xenograft model by intravenous administration.

Taken together, ginger-processed ligands on ginger-derived exosome-like nanovesicles (GDENs)and 6-shogaol may be considered a function for the prevention and combined with primary therapy for the treatment of cancer without inducing adverse effects.

Endometrial cancer is a chronic condition characterized by the irregular cell in the tissue of the endometrium.

It's the fourth most common cancer among women overall, after breast cancer, lung cancer, and bowel cancer.

Most cases of endometrial cancer start on the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the endometrium. At the advanced stage, after penetrating into the deeper layers, malignant cancer cells may travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organs.

Endometrial cancer has metastasized to the rectum, bladder, pelvic and para-aortic lymph nodes and vagina.

The exact causes of endometrial cancer are unknown. Epidemiological studies suggested that the increase in age, more years of menstruation, never been pregnant, obesity, and the use of hormone therapy are some of the major prevalent risk factors associated with endometrial cancer.

Some researchers indicated that hormonal changes in women's bodies, such as higher androgen and estrogen levels and lower levels of progesterone due to polycystic.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, " ligand-independent estrogen receptor agonist activity of DIM, and uncover an essential role for the stimulation in TGF-alpha expression and the TGF-alpha activated signal transduction pathway in the potent cytostatic effects of DIM in endometrial cancer cells".
Taken altogether, cabbage may be considered a functional food for the treatment of endometrial cancer pending the confirmation of the large sample size and multicenter human study.

Neuro-toxicity is a condition of brain damage caused by exposure to toxic substances.
The toxic condition was found to reduce the brain function in transmitting and processing signals to other parts of the nervous system.

Symptoms of neurotoxicity are totally depending on the degree of toxicity. Some symptoms may take some time to develop. However, in most cases, symptoms may appear immediately after exposure.


Depending on the area and location of neuron damage, weakness or numbness, loss of memory, vision, headache change of cognitive and behavioral and sexual dysfunction are the most common symptoms found in people with neurotoxicity.

According to the statistics provided by the University of Ibadan, in the United States, for instance, out of 63 million youths under 18 years of age, about 10% have diagnosable neurobehavioural problems with only 20% receiving therapy and the magnitude affected by neurotoxicity is unknown.

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrub in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.


The plant has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

In the analysis of natural compounds with neuroprotective effects in patients with diabetes, researchers examined the antioxidants richly present in bilberry fruits' effects on diabetes-related brain dysfunctions.

The study included the differentiation of the expression patterns of αCaMKII in hippocampal neurons from non-diabetic, diabetic, and diabetic rats fed with an extract of bilberry fruit.

Diabetic rat's hippocampal neurons immunoreactive (ir) to αCaMKII were swollen and the lengths of the neuronal fibers were reduced compared to the significantly longer αCaMKII-positive nerve fibers in diabetic rats fed with bilberry fruit.

Injection of bilberry fruit also induced significant changes in the average larger diameter of αCaMKII-ir hippocampal neurons.


The results suggested that bilberry fruits exerted a neuroprotective effect on hippocampal neurons in diabetes through its antioxidants activity.

Furthermore, in order to find more information about the bilberry effect on the brain, researchers examined it's anthocyanoside (VMA) and/or its main anthocyanidin constituents (cyanidin, delphinidin, and malvidin) neuroprotective effect against retinal damage in vitro and in vivo.

In RGC cultures, VMA and all three anthocyanidins protected the brain against SIN-1 (chloride) toxicity and inhibited lipid peroxidation in mouse forebrain homogenates through the antioxidant property and NMDA-induced morphological retinal damage by allowing high levels of calcium ions (Ca2+) to enter the cells.

Moreover, VMA and all three anthocyanidins also protected the retinal damage by increasing the TUNEL-positive cells in the ganglion cell layer.

Dr. Matsunaga N, the lead scientist said, "VMA and its anthocyanidins have neuroprotective effects (exerted at least in part via an anti-oxidation mechanism) in these in vitro and in vivo models of retinal diseases".


Taken altogether, bilberry may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of neurological diseases associated with neurotoxicity, pending the validation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Hypertension, a condition associated with the cluster of metabolic syndrome is a medical condition associated with abnormally high blood pressure.

Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood and changes constantly depending on activity. However, persistent hypertension due to poor management over time can lead to diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

According to the statistics provided by the American Heart Association., nearly half of all adults in the United States live with high blood pressure, or 1 in 3 Americans are hypertensive.

Hypertension is a leading risk factor for heart disease and stroke that cause more death in the US

The most common prevalent factors associated with the condition onset are family history, aging, being male, being overweight or obese, ethnicity, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet, and medical condition such as chronic kidney disease.


Believe it or not, excessive alcohol drinking is also one of the major causes besides obesity in elevating the syndrome onset.

Depending on the levels of blood pressure, most people with mild hypertension are asymptomatic. However, unmanaged high blood pressure can induce complications of heart attack or stroke, heart failure, weakened and narrowed blood vessels, metabolic syndrome, and trouble with memory or understanding,

In severe cases, chronic hypertension can lead to dementia.

Conventionally, blood pressure medications have been found to prevent many deaths from heart disease and stroke over the past 30 years, however, long-term intake of such medications has caused many side effects such as damaging the kidney.

Some researchers suggested, by making changes in lifestyle, maintaining an ideal weight, and eating a diet with low salt, you could do just fine without the drugs.

Dr. Myung Hwa Yang wrote, "Healthy eating, weight management, and appropriate physical activity are essential for the management of high blood pressure in adults since this lifestyle management has the potential to improve blood pressure control and even reduce the need for medication.23)"

And "Our findings indicate that to achieve better rates of blood pressure control, the clinician should advise lifestyle modifications such as adequate physical activity and low salt intake, in addition to prescribing medication and monitoring the patient for hypertension control".

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, a close relation to garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in many recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.

Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild, or sweet.

On finding a potent ingredient that processes cardioprotection researchers examined the effects of onion on blood pressure in N(G)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) induced-hypertensive rats and stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSP).

The vivo studies included male 6-weeks-old Sprague-Dawley rats induced-hypertensive to receive tap water containing L-NAME of a concentration of 50 mg/kg BW/day and dried onion at 5%.

Onion application showed significant anti-hypertensive activity on the L-NAME induced-hypertensive rats and the SHRSP by decreasing the thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) associated with lipid peroxidation in blood plasma.

Furthermore, nitrate/nitrite (products of nitric oxide (NO)) involved in blood vessel relaxation excreted in urine and the NO synthase (NOS) associated with vascular tone activity in the kidneys in SHRSP were also increased by the onion injection.

Interestingly, the efficacy of onion that inhibits the onset of high blood pressure was not found to be similar to those in the L-NAME-induced hypertensive rats such as increasing the levels of NOS.


More precisely, onion promoted hypotension in L-NAME treated rats without inhibiting NOS activity by L-NAME, and decreased nitrate/nitrite excretion in urine may be associated with only the promotion of antioxidants activity

Dr. Sakai Y, the lead scientist said, "The mechanism of the antihypertensive effect of onion probably involves the increased saving of NO by the antioxidative activity of onion in L-NAME induced-hypertensive rats".

Taken altogether, onions may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of hypertension, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Bromelain Gobbles Up Mammary Cancer Cells, Studies Suggest

A mammary tumor is a medical and chronic condition originating from the milk-producing gland.
The mammary gland located in the breasts of females is responsible for lactation.

Most cases of mammary cancer are first found in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the milk-producing gland, before penetrating deeper into the layers.

At the advanced stage, the malignant cancer cells can also travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy tissues and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.

Epidemiologically, mammary cancer has been found to spread to the colon and the liver.

Most common risk factors of mammary cancer are similar to those of breast cancer, including, aging, physical inactivity, being obese or overweight, family and personal history, having a dense breast, radiation therapy, pregnancy history, genetic proposition, particularly in women who had used drug diethylstilbestrol (DES).

Out of all the aforementioned risk factors, some researchers suggested that the promotion of high-fat-diet-induced a high percentage of obese US females may be the major culprit that causes the rise of mammary cancer.

Dr. Valeria Simone, the lead scientist in the examination of the molecule interconnection of obesity and breast cancer risk wrote, "Obesity is an important risk factor for breast cancer (BC) in postmenopausal women; interlinked molecular mechanisms might be involved in the pathogenesis. Increased levels of estrogens due to aromatization of the adipose tissue, inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-6, and prostaglandin E2, insulin resistance and hyperactivation of insulin-like growth factors pathways, adipokines, and oxidative stress are all abnormally regulated in obese women and contribute to cancerogenesis".

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient against mammary carcinoma, researchers examined the bromelain autophagic phenomenon in mammary carcinoma cells (estrogen receptor positive and negative).

According to the tested assays, bromelain showed delayed growth inhibitory response and induction of autophagy, in MCF-7 cells.

Bromelain-induced cancer cell apoptosis was found in the sub-G1 cell fraction and apoptotic features associated with chromatin condensation change and cell division.

Interestingly, in the presence of an anti-apoptotic protein that augments the autophagy levels, bromelain inhibited morphological apoptosis but did not prevent cell death.

In other words, bromelain induced cancer cell death by inhibiting the expression of signaling cascade associated with the phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase ½ (ERK½) and exhibiting the proapoptotic kinases (c-jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) and p38 kinase).

Based on the findings, researchers said, "bromelain-induced autophagy was positively regulated by p38 and JNK but negatively regulated by ERK½. Autophagy-inducing property of bromelain can be further exploited in breast cancer therapy".

In order to reveal more information about bromelain anti-mammary carcinoma properties, researchers examined the enzyme effect on GI-101A breast cancer cells.

According to the results from GI-101A cells treated with increasing concentrations of bromelain for 24 hours, bromelain induced cancer cell death via activation of the apoptosis mechanisms.

Observation of the results from the caspase-9 and caspase-3 assays, bromelain exhibited a prominent effect to induce cancer cell apoptosis correlated with the elevation of plasma cytokeratin 18 (CK-18) fragment levels, a marker of cell death.

The inhibition of bromelain against cancer cell proliferation was also evident by the DNA fragmentation analysis and 4,6'-diamino-2-phenylindole dihydrochloride fluorescence staining of the nucleus.

Taken altogether, bromelain may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of mammary carcinoma, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
