Will Acadia Honey Be Used to Replace Prednisolone for Acute and Chronic Pain Relief?

By Kyle J. Norton

Antinociception is the process that blocks sensory neuron response to potentially damaging stimuli associated with pain.

Pain is a natural reaction with an aim to protect our body against danger or damage.

Acute pain is the pain that lasts less few weeks.

Chronic pain is pain that lasts more than 6 months.

Chronic pain has been found to be the most common reason for someone to see his/her physician.

Chronic pain in some cases was a major symptom of a medical condition that can only be treated physically and mentally through pain management.

However, most cases of chronic pain are associated with injury, such as a back sprain, or there may be an ongoing cause, such as illness.

Chronic pain can interfere with a person's quality of life and general functioning.

According to statistics provided by Dr. Donald Schopflocher, lead scientists in the evaluation of the prevalence of chronic pain in Canada, researchers wrote, "The prevalence of chronic pain for adults older than 18 years of age was 18.9%".

And, "Chronic pain prevalence was greater in older adults, and females had a higher prevalence at older ages compared with males. Approximately one-half of those with chronic pain reported suffering for more than 10 years. Approximately one-third of those reporting chronic pain rated the intensity in the very severe range".

Chronic pain according to the study is very common, affecting approximately 19% of Canadian over 18 years of age, mostly in older adults.

Honey, the rich golden liquid is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The liquid is considered one of the healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

Researchers on finding a potential natural whole food for pain relief examined the Tualang honey (Fēng Mì) and prednisolone on the nociceptive response in male Sprague-Dawley rats.

35 male Sprague-Dawley rats selected for the study were divided into 5 groups. Each group was given either distilled water, Tualang honey (0.2, 1.2 or 2.4 g/kg), or prednisolone (10 mg/kg) for 10 days.

Where prednisolone is a steroid medication used for pain relief.

According to the response to a noxious thermal stimulus using the tail-flick test on Day 10, the tail-flick latency time was significantly higher in the groups that received 1.2 g/kg and 2.4 g/kg of Tualang honey and 10 mg/kg of prednisolone, compared to the control group.

Compared to the groups treated with prednisolone or distilled water, Tualuang honey treatments showed no effects on other parameters.

In other words, the Tualang honey treatment group showed signs of abnormal behavior, such as total food pellet intake or weight loss.

Dr. Aziz CB, the lead scientist at the Universiti Sains Malaysia, said, "preemptive administration of Tualang honey (1.2 g/kg and 2.4 g/kg) and prednisolone (10 mg/kg) had reduced the pain responses".

Based on these results, Tualang honey processes a strong antinociceptive better than those of corticosteroids (prednisolone).

In order to reveal more information about the honey antinociceptive activity, researchers compared several kinds of honey pain relief efficacy.

Acacia honey showed the most effective dose-dependent antinociceptive activity compared to the untreated group in tail-flick and paw-withdrawal tests, respectively.

Most tested honeys exerted antinociceptive activity of reaching the maximum at 60 min post-treatment then gradually decreased, whereas the activity of indomethacin was persistent at 120 min post-treatment.

Interestingly, the major constituents found in honey such as fructose, glucose, maltose, and sucrose used alone do not demonstrate any effect compared to the whole food.

The results strongly suggested that there must be other compounds in the honey that process a significant antinociceptive property or all active ingredients in honey work together to stimulate the pain relief activity.

Taken altogether, honey, particularly, Tualang and Acacia honey may be considered a functional remedy for acute and chronic pain relief, pending the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Bilberry Maybe Effective Against Intestinal Cancer with No Side Effects, Scientists Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Intestinal cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the tissue of the intestines.

Most cases of intestinal cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the internal tissue. At the advanced stage, after penetrating deep layers of the intestines, the cancer cells can travel a distance away from the intestine to infect other healthy tissue and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.

Certain factors such as being overweight or obese, physical inactivity, certain types of diet. smoking excessive alcohol drinking, family and personal history, and the increase in age are associated with an increased risk of intestinal cancer.

Some researchers suggested that the increased incidence of intestinal cancer in the Western world may be associated with the promotion of a high-fat Western diet over the past many decades.

Dr. Manon D. Schulz, the lead scientist in the investigation of the effects of high-fat diet-mediated dysbiosis promotes intestinal carcinogenesis suggested, "Several aspects common to a Western lifestyle, including obesity and decreased physical activity, are known risks for gastrointestinal cancers. There is substantial evidence suggesting that diet profoundly affects the composition of the intestinal microbiota. Moreover, there is now unequivocal evidence linking dysbiosis to cancer development".

And, "Undoubtedly various factors contribute to the etiology of intestinal cancer, but there are compelling arguments to include high-fat diet (HFD) and composition of the gut microbiota as key risk factors".

The results strongly suggested that the risk of intestinal cancer can be decreased by changing the diet pattern from the Western diet to a traditional diet with higher fruits and vegetables with a lower intake of red meat and saturated and trans fat and processed foods.

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The herbal plant has been used as foods and herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of intestinal carcinogenesis examined the
intestinal carcinogenesis--relationship with tissue anthocyanin levels in an animal model.

Selected Apc(Min) mice ingested C3G or Mirtoselect at 0.03, 0.1, or 0.3% in the diet for 12 weeks, and intestinal adenomas were examined.

Where Mirtoselect, is an anthocyanin mixture from bilberry, and isolated cyanidin-3-glucoside (C3G) is the most abundant anthocyanin in the diet.

C3G and Mirtoselect at the highest doses decreased the adenoma numbers by 45% (p < 0.001) or 30% (p < 0.05), respectively, compared to controls.

According to the intestinal mucosa and urinary assays, anthocyanins were found at the analytical detection limit in the plasma and at quantifiable levels.

More precisely, the total anthocyanin levels in mice on C3G or Mirtoselect were 43 ng and 8.1 microg/g tissue, respectively, in the intestinal mucosa, and 7.2 and 12.3 microg/ml in the urine.
These results suggested that C3G and Mirtoselect in the Apc(Min) mouse processed a chemotherapeutic effect for the treatment of intestinal carcinogenesis.

Moreover, in order to reveal more information about berries anti intestinal tumorigenesis, researchers examined the different phenolic profiles on intestinal tumorigenesis in multiple intestinal neoplasia/+ mice.

Mice selected for the study were fed a high-fat AIN93-G diet (Con) or AIN93-G diets containing 10% (w:w) freeze-dried bilberry, lingonberry (LB), or cloudberry (CB) for 10 wk.

All 3 berries significantly inhibited the formation of intestinal adenomas as indicated by a 15-30% reduction in tumor numbers.

According to Western blotting and immunohistochemistry, all 3 berries inhibited the levels of decreased levels of proteins associated with cell cycle division.

Additionally, all 3 berries exerted early protection of the cells in the intestine against the alternation of cell DNA to facilitate the onset of the disease.

The findings strongly suggested the use of berries as chemopreventive components for the treatment of intestinal carcinogenesis.

Taken altogether, bilberry may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of
intestinal cancer, pending the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter study.

Herbal Angelica Processes Anti- Cancer Activity in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is the class of diseases associated with the growth of the cells disorderly and uncontrollably due to the alternation of DNA.

Most cases of cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissues of the organ or gland. At the early stage, most cancers are asymptomatic.

However, at the advanced stage, most cancers not can induce common symptoms such as gastrointestinal discomforts, unintended weight loss, loss of appetite and fatigue but also localized symptoms depending on the affected tissues and organs.

Cancers at this stage also can travel a distance away from the original site to induce secondary metastasis.

According to the statistics provided by the American cancer society, in 2018,1,735,350 new cases were diagnosed, representing more than 4,700 new cancer diagnoses each day.

The lifetime probability of being diagnosed with cancer is 39.7% for men and 37.6% for women.

Lung, breast, prostate, and colorectal cancers are the most common cancer in the US.

Free radicals are unstable atoms with a single electron in the outer ring. Therefore, in order to remain stable. free radicals are ready to donate or intercept an electron from other atoms, leading to a chain of oxidative reactions that can not be stopped until all electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

Oxidative stress is an imbalanced ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body. It is caused by either overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidants in the body.

Believe it or not. overexpression of free radicals for a long period of time or oxidative stress can cause cells and lipid damage, leading to alteration of cell DNA, a leading cause of cancer.

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

On finding a natural compound for the treatment of diseases associated with DNA alternation, the researchers examined the effects of Angelica n-Butylidenephthalide (BP) anti-cancer activity.

According to the assays that the results from the application of riboflavin-5'-phosphate (RFMP) immobilized iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4 MNPs) as carriers for BP to treat cancer cell lines overexpressed riboflavin receptors on their cell membrane-derived from liver, prostate, breast, cancer cells
* BP treatment. showed a strong sensitivity to the tested cell lines.

* BP-binding free riboflavin-5'-phosphate (RFMP) on MNPs to target these model cells during the period of treatment by readily released on target cancer cells.

* Fe3O4@RFMP MNPs immobilized with BP released free-form BP at a similar amount for the inhibition of cancer cells, with no apparent harmful effects on non-target cells.

* BP-Fe3O4@RFMP MNPs upregulated the level of cysteine-aspartic acid protease 3 (caspase 3) associated with cancer cell apoptosis.

Taken altogether, Herbal Angelica may be sued for the treatment of cancer, pending to larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Betanin Isolated From Beetroot, a Potential and Natural Plant-Based Antioxidant that Prevents Oxidative Stress Developing

By Kyle J. Norton

Oxidative stress is a condition caused by an imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body.

In other words, oxidative stress is either caused by overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes in the body.

Some researchers suggested that oxidative stress may also arise due to the chain reaction of free radicals in which free radicals donate or intercept an electron from other stable molecules.

Long-term oxidative stress present in the body can cause protein and lipid damage and alternation of cell DNA, leading to the onset of chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer.

More precisely, exogenous factors, such as cigarette smoke, and endogenous factors, such as the oxidative burst from activated macrophages are some of the factors involved in the risk of oxidative stress.

The Liver Pathophysiology, 2017 in the explanation of the cause of oxidative stress, wrote, " (1) the presence of xenobiotics, (2) the activation of the immune system in response to invading microorganisms (inflammation), and (3) radiation, which makes oxidative stress a common denominator of toxicity or stress".

In other words, oxidative stress may be preventable by following a diet rich in antioxidants such as a diet with higher fruits and vegetable consumption accompanied by moderate exercise and reducing intake of saturated and trans fat and processed foods.

Betanin is a phytochemical in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of Betacyanins, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the prevention of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers examined the effects of natural pigment betanin on oxidative stress in the kidney of paraquat-treated rats.

Paraquat injected intraperitoneally induce renal damage rats were randomly divided into four groups: a control group, a paraquat group, and two paraquat groups that were treated with betanin at 25 and 100 mg/kg/d three days before and two days after paraquat administration.

Betanin-treated rats showed strong activity in alleviating the paraquat-incurred acute kidney injury, observed by the improvement, reduced serum and urine markers that indicate a kidney injury.

Betanin also decreased oxidative stress elicited by paraquat by increasing the expression of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host accompanied by inhibiting the levels of free radicals.

These results suggested that betanin protects the tested rats against kidney damage due to oxidative stress in the induction of chronic inflammation.

In streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetes (DN) in rats, researchers examined the betanin anti-fibrotic mechanisms in rat kidneys.

Betanin at a dose of 25, 50, and 100mg/kg/day and lisinopril (5mg/kg/day, reference compound) orally administered for 8 weeks after the induction of DN, not only significantly inhibited proteinuria, blood glucose, serum creatinine and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels involved in kidney injury, but also restored antioxidant enzyme activities in kidney tissue.

Additionally, betanin treatment also protected kidney integrity by reducing the glomerular surface area, glomerulosclerosis, and tubulointerstitial fibrosis.

In other words, betanin demonstrated the kidney protective activity against streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetes (DN) in rats through regulation of transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) in facilitating the anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory activity.

Taken altogether, betanin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of betanin in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Phytochemical 3,3'-Diindolylmethane Isolated From Cruciferous Vegetables Inhibit Parameters Associated with the Risk of Hyperglycemia

By Kyle J. Norton

Hyperglycemia is a condition of abnormally high blood sugar in the bloodstream associated with diabetic complications in patients with type 2 diabetes.

In order words, hyperglycemia is a result of the body which isn't properly using or doesn't make the hormone insulin.

Hyperglycemia is also considered a hallmark of patients with type 2 diabetes. Another hallmark is insulin resistance.

The condition occurs mostly due to poor control and management in patients with diabetes such as
a poor diet, physical inactivity choices, symptoms of medicines intake.

Some patients with diabetes also experience symptoms of hyperglycemia due to skipping or not taking enough glucose-lowering medication.

The most common symptoms of hyperglycemia are frequent urination, increased thirst, blurred vision, persistent fatigue, and headache.

If you are having some of the aforementioned symptoms, you may have hyperglycemia. Please make sure you check with your doctor to prevent longer-term untreated complications.

According to epidemiological studies, untreated or long-term persistently hyperglycemia in patients with diabetes has been found to induce serious symptoms such as shortness of breath, confusion, and coma.

3,3'-Diindolylmethane or DIM are phytochemicals derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol, belonging to the group of Indoles, found abundantly in broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and kale, etc.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient for the treatment of hyperglycemia in patients with type 2 diabetes, researchers examined the effect of the nutritive phytochemicals, indole-3-carbinol (I3C) and its metabolite, 3, 3'- diindolylmethane (DIM) on oxidative stress developed in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).

The study is carried out on the genetically modified mouse (C57BL/6J mice) similar to those of metabolic abnormalities of the human disease after the administration of a high-fat diet (HFD).

Injection of DIM and I3C positively modulated the glucose, insulin, and hemoglobin (Hb), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) level, an indication of the hyperglycemically modulatory activities in the tested HFD mice.

Compared to the HFD group, treatment groups showed a decrease in the levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), lipid hydroperoxides (LOOH), conjugated dienes (CD associated with oxidative stress in lipid peroxidation.

Furthermore, DIM and I3C also improved the antioxidant enzymes produced by the host observed by the increasing SOD, CAT, GPx levels in the erythrocyte, liver, kidney, and heart.

Levels of free radical scavengers such as vitamin C, vitamin E, and GSH levels are also increased in the plasma, liver, kidney, and heart in diabetic mice.

In other words, DIM and I3C protected diabetic mice against diabetics complications by modulating blood glucose and lipid by balancing the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the tested subjects.

Based on the finding, researchers wrote in the final report, "the antioxidant-scavenging action was accelerated in mice treated with DIM than the I3C treatment group which was comparable with the standard drug metformin".

Taken altogether, 3,3'-Diindolylmethane derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of hyperglycemia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of 3,3'-diindolylmethane in form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Plant-Based Alliin Isolated From Garlic and Onion May Process Anti Liver Cancer Property, Researchers Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Liver cancer is a medical condition caused by irregular cell growth in the liver tissue.

According to the statistics assessed by the cancer experts, in 2019, approximately 42,030 adults (29,480 men and 12,550 women) in the United States will be diagnosed with primary liver cancer.

Believe it or not, since 1980, the incidence of liver cancer has tripled. Between 2006 and 2015, the number of people diagnosed with the disease increased by approximately 3% annually.

The most common preventable causes of liver cancer are excessive alcohol drinking over time, chronic infection by hepatitis B and C, and cirrhosis.

Types of liver cancer include

* Hepatocellular carcinoma, the most common type of liver cancer accounting for 75 percent of all cases.

* Cholangiocarcinoma is a cancer of the bile duct, which is the small, tube-like bile ducts in the liver that carry bile to the gallbladder to help with digestion.

* Liver Angiosarcoma is a rare form of liver cancer that develops quickly and

* Hepatoblastoma also is a rare type of liver cancer found in children, particularly in those under age 3.

The most common symptoms of liver cancer are upper abdominal pain., abdominal swelling, jaundice and white, chalky stools, accompanied by general symptoms shared by other types of cancer including unintended weight loss, gastrointestinal discomfort, loss of appetite, and persistent fatigue.

If you have experienced some of the aforementioned symptoms with no signs of receding, please make sure that you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide,. a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belonging to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.

With an aim to find a potential ingredient for the treatment of liver cancer with little or no side effects, researchers in the cancer team at the Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique examined the increasing fertilization of soil resulted in an increased alliin content of the powders on liver cancer animal model.

According to the results, garlic powders administered to rats for 2 weeks (5% of the diet), administration of the different garlic powders demonstrated a 35-60% reduction in DNA damage induced by N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) in rat liver.

In examining the increased alliin content of the garlic powder, researchers found that the presence of alliin was associated strongly with a proportional decrease in NDMA induced DNA alteration.

Believe it or not, the increased levels of Alliin in the garlic powder content did not have an additional effect on DNA damage induced by aflatoxin B1 in the liver or by 1,2-dimethylhydrazine in the colon, compared to the efficacy in the liver.

In other words, garlic powders regardless of the levels of alliin did not modify the genotoxic activity which is the direct-acting carcinogen methyl nitrosourea in the colon.

Taken altogether, alliin may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of liver cancer, depending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of alliin in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Onion's Quercetin Inhibits Invasive Osteosarcoma in Vitro, According to Study

By Kyle J. Norton

Osteosarcoma is a type of bone cancer found mostly in teenagers and people over age 60.

Most cases of osteosarcoma are associated with genetic syndromes. In other words, Osteosarcoma is associated with a genetic preposition inherited from the parent.

Dr. James J. Morrow wrote, "Osteosarcoma is the most common primary malignancy of bone, typically presenting in the first or second decade of life".

And, " Increased risk of osteosarcoma is associated with a number of well-defined genetic syndromes: hereditary retinoblastoma (germline mutation of the Rb gene), Li-Fraumeni syndrome (germline mutation of the p53 gene), Bloom syndrome (germline mutation of the RECQL2 gene), Werner syndrome (germline mutation of the RECQL3 gene), and Rothmund-Thomson syndrome (germline mutation of the RECQL4 gene)".

The exact causes of osteosarcoma are unidentified. However, epidemiologically, besides gene expression, an unhealthy lifestyle such as body weight, physical activity, diet, and tobacco, gender, age, height, ethnicity, and exposure to bone radiation are also some prevalent factors found in patients with the disease.

According to the statistic, in the US, osteosarcoma is rare and approximately 900 new cases of osteosarcoma are diagnosed each year. Children and teens are younger than 20 accounts for half of the numbers.

The overall 5-year survival rate for children and teens with osteosarcoma is 70%. If cancer has spread to the lung, the 5-year survival rate is only 40% comapred to localized cancer between 60% to 80%.

Conventionally, Most cases of osteosarcoma are o treated with a combination of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy.

In patients with high-grade tumors, before surgery, neo-adjuvant therapy may be necessary to shrink the tumor.

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belongings to the family Alliaceae, a close relation of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.

Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild, or sweet.

On finding a potent ingredient for the treatment of osteosarcoma researchers examined the effects of quercetin on proliferation, migration, and invasion in U2OS and Saos-2 cells.

According to the tested analysis, quercetin (20, 40, 60, 80, or 100 μM) for 48 h, incubation with U2OS and Saos-2 cells showed a significant reduction of cancer cell viability, in a dose-dependent manner.

Cell adhesion, invasion, and migration of the tested cell lines were also significantly inhibited by the application of quercetin only at higher concentrations.

Furthermore, the expressions of pro-apoptotic matrixes were increased accompanied by the decrease of anti-apoptotic proteins.

Moreover, gene PTHR1 associated with tumor proliferation was also decreased by quercetin.

More precisely, PTHR1 expression in U2OS cells was reduced by 0.18-, and 0.41-fold at 80, and 100 μM, respectively, whereas 0.15 and 0.38 folds in Saos-2 cells.

In other words, by inhibiting the expression of PTHR, quercetin inhibited proliferation and invasion of the tested cell lines.

Based on the results, researchers said, "quercetin reduced human metastatic osteosarcoma cell invasion, adhesion, proliferation, and migration by inhibiting PTHR1."

Taken altogether, onion may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of metastatic osteosarcoma, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
