Fresh Cabbages, the Natural Antioxidants

By Kyle J. Norton

The expression of oxidative stress is a medical condition characterized by the imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidant enzymes produced by the host tissue.
by
In some cases, this reaction also is caused by a long-term accumulation of toxic substances in the body, such as lead, cadmium, mercury, and arsenic.

There is no single cause of oxidative stress. The onset of oxidative stress may include cigarette smoke, oxidative burst from activated macrophages, particularly, the free radicals chain reaction.

Sadly, a prolonged period of oxidative stress presented in the human body can cause oxidative damage to biomolecules, (lipids, proteins, DNA) and the death of healthy cells through cytotoxicity.

Free radicals are highly reactive molecules with an unpaired electron on the outer ring of the atom.

Due to its nature to become stable, free radicals readily to donate or steal an electron from other molecules, leading to the chain of domino's effect that can not be stopped until either the electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

Overexpression of free radicals is known to cause damage in contributing to the etiology of many chronic health problems such as cardiovascular and inflammatory disease, cataracts, and cancer.

Antioxidants are stable atom that plays a critical role in protecting the body against the attack of free radicals.

In other words, antioxidants inhibited the onset of free radicals before they can cause a chain reaction in facilitating protein, lipid, and cell damage.

Antioxidants can either be produced by the liver or intake from dietary sources. Under normal conditions, antioxidant enzymes produced by the body in a healthy individual are good enough to counter the bombardment of free radical attacks.

Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belongings to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem of which is crowded a mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.

With an aim to find a natural food for the prevention of oxidative stress in the progression of cardiac diseases, researchers examined the effect of red cabbage fermentation on anthocyanin bioavailability and plasma antioxidant capacity in humans.

According to the results of the randomized crossover study of 13 volunteers who consumed fresh and fermented red cabbage, red cabbage products contained antioxidants of 20 different nonacylated and acylated anthocyanins with the main structure of cyanidin triglucosides.

Furthermore, the bioavailability of anthocyanin from fresh red cabbage was over 10% higher than from fermented red cabbage.

Moreover, fresh cabbage consumption induced a higher antioxidant capacity in volunteer plasma than that of fermented cabbage intake.

In other words, fresh cabbage processes a higher antioxidant capacity compared to fermentation.

Collectively, researchers said, "The study has shown that fermentation process affects red cabbage anthocyanins bioavailability and human plasma antioxidant capacity".

Taken altogether, cabbage processed abundantly phytochemicals may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of SFN in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

NHE-06 (Dandelion + 5 Other Herbal Medicines) Formula Kills Liver Cancer Cells in Intact Immunity Animals

By Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal organ located in the upper right portion of the abdomen, beneath your diaphragm, and above your stomach.

The liver not only plays a critical role to filter the blood coming from the intestine before passing them to other parts of the body but also protects our body against toxins by detoxifying chemicals and metabolizes drugs.

Furthermore, the liver produces bile that not only aids the digestive function in food absorption but also builds strong cell membranes, produces vitamin D and steroid hormone.

Additionally, the liver also inhibits oxidative stress by producing the antioxidant enzyme that counters the expression of free radicals in the body.

Liver cancer is a medical condition characterized by cell growth irregularly in the liver tissue.

The causes of liver cancer are associated with the alternation of cells DNA which normally begins in the cells on the surface of the inner lining.

Liver cancer at the early stage no not cause any symptoms. However, at the advanced stage, liver cancer cells can cause a wide range of symptoms including jaundice, abdominal swelling and pain, and dark urine and white stool accompanied by the general symptoms of cancers such as unintended weight loss, loss of appetite, chronic fatigue and tiredness and gastrointestinal discomforts.

The most common cause of liver cancer is infected by the hepatitis virus. However, in North America, due to the overexpression of the overweight and obese population, liver cancer may be slowly progressed from nonalcoholic fatty liver disease through cirrhosis to liver cancer.

Dandelion is a herbaceous perennial plant, genus Taraxacum, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to temperate regions of the world. It has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat gout, eczema, acne, gall bladder, kidney, liver, and urinary disorders, hypoglycemia, dyspepsia with constipation, edema, blood pressure, and heart weakness, chronic joint, skin diseases, etc.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of cancer, scientists examined a novel herbal formula NHE-06, a water-decocting extract from six natural herbals, Ficus carica, Taraxacum mongolicum, Angelica Sinensis, Lonicera japonica, Pseudo-ginseng, and Folium ginkgo. anti-liver cancer activity.

According to the tested analysis, in Vitro and Vivo, NHE-06 showed a significant suppression against NF-κB/IL-6/STAT3 signaling associated with activation of pro-inflammation in related cancer and enhancement of antitumor immunity in both cancer cell line and HCC-bearing mice.

In Vivo, the application of NHE-06 demonstrated strong activity in both preventive and therapeutic functions.

However, NHE-06 was only effective in intact immunity mice, compared to no effect in immunocompetent mice.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " the novel formula of the anti-inflammatory NHE-06 effectively restores antitumor immunosurveillance and can be applied for prevention and/or treatment of inflammation-related cancers".

Taken altogether, dandelion may be considered a remedy for the protection against liver cancer in intact immunity patients, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Collard Green Promotes Bile Acid Binding Activity

By Kyle J. Norton

Bile acids synthesized by oxidation from cholesterol in the liver, that flow to the gallbladder to aid digestion.

Bile acid-binding is a process to interferes with normal fat digestion and absorption including the prevention of absorption of fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D, E, and K.

In other words, the binding of bile acids (BAs) may have a strong effect to lower blood cholesterol levels by increasing the excretion of bile acids in the stool and reducing the amount of bile acid returning to the liver.

By inhibiting the levels of bile acid caused by a certain type of liver/bile duct disease such as partial biliary obstruction, levels of cholesterol can be controlled.

Conventionally, the effects of bile acid sequestrant are limited. Low doses of 8 gram/day of Cholestyramine, a bile acid sequestrant, which binds bile in the gastrointestinal tract to prevent its reabsorption can lower LDL cholesterol by 10%-15% compared to high doses of 24 gram/day of only 25%.

In other words, bile acid-binding medicine such as Cholestyramine used alone is less effective, compared to statins in lowering LDL cholesterol.

The most common symptoms associated with the intake of Cholestyramine are constipation, diarrhea, stomach/abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite.

Bile acid sequestrants such as lovastatin combined with niacin may be used to lower aggressively lower LDL cholesterol levels.

Collard Green is a species of Brassica Oleracea, belongings to the family Brassicaceae with unknown origin. Today, the plant is cultivated commercially for its thick, slightly bitter edible leaves.

On finding a potential plant that process bile acid-binding activity researchers compared the effects of
various vegetables, using a mixture of bile acids secreted in human bile under physiological conditions.

The study compared the mixture of 8 replicate incubations which were conducted for each treatment simulating gastric and intestinal digestion, including a substrate only, a bile acid mixture only, and 6 with the substrate and bile acid mixture with Cholestyramine (a cholesterol-lowering, bile acid-binding drug) as the positive control treatment and cellulose as the negative control on bile acid-binding activity

Based on the tested results, the significantly different (P < or = .05) health-promoting potential are collard greens = kale = mustard greens > broccoli > Brussels sprouts = spinach = green bell pepper > cabbage as indicated by their bile acid binding on dry matter basis.

In other words, collard green scored the highest bile acid-binding activity, similar to those of kale and mustard greens.

More important, steam cooking significantly was found to enhance the bile acid-binding property of the collard green, compared to those of uncooked.

Collectively, researchers said, "These green/leafy vegetables, when consumed regularly after steam cooking, would lower the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer, advance human nutrition research, and improve public health".

Taken altogether, collard green, particularly the stream veggie may be considered a functional food to enhance the bile acid-binding activity, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Omega -3 Fatty Acids Inhibit the Onset of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

By Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal organ found in the human which plays an essential role in filtering the blood from the digestive system before passing them to other parts of the body.

The liver also produces cholesterol, a waxy substance which aids digestion, builds cell membranes and produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.

Liver disease is a class of medical conditions characterized by the reducing partly or completely the function of the liver, including liver failure.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is a condition of fatty liver diseases as a result of the accumulated of fat in the liver, not caused by abusive alcohol consumption.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is emerging as a widespread condition in the US, approximately 30% of the adult population are obese.

The disease is also manifested by steatosis, steatohepatitis, cirrhosis.

Obesity is associated linearly to the prevalent risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

In conventional medicine, treatments of NAFLD mainly focus on weight loss accompanied to pharmacologic therapy in control of insulin resistance and dyslipidemia.

As of today, there is no effective pharmacologic therapy approved specifically and directly for the treatment of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

The exact causes of NAFLD aren't well understood. Some researchers suggested that certain risk factors such as long-term use of certain medications(8), genetic preposition(8), insulin resistance(8), high cholesterol(8) and triglycerides(8) in the blood, polycystic ovary syndrome(8), metabolic syndrome(8), obesity(8), and type 2 diabetes(8) are associated with the onset of the disease.

Recent studies also found that people with obstructive sleep apnea(11), underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism(10), and underactive pituitary gland (hypopituitarism) (9) also at an increased risk of the NALFD.

Some researchers suggested that an unhealthy diet such as a high-fat diet may also have a strong implication on NAFLD(12)(13).

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of chronic liver diseases, researchers examined the efficacy of C20-22 ω3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) on NAFLD in adults and children.

According to the results of the experiment, humans with NAFLD and NASH; and preclinical mouse models of NASH, showed a high abundance of hepatic saturated (SFA) and monounsaturated (MUFA) fat, but a low abundance of hepatic C20-22 ω3 PUFA.

In other words, the imbalance of such change has been found to induce hepatic lipotoxicity, inflammation, oxidative stress, and fibrosis.

Furthermore, recent meta-analyses and clinical trials in the evaluation of the capacity of C20-22 ω3 PUFA suggested that dietary supplementation improves health outcomes in adults and children with preexisting NAFLD.

Additionally, diets supplemented with docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22 : 6,ω3) alone or with eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20 : 5,ω3) are tolerated and effective at lowering liver fat in NAFLD patients.

Based on the evidence, researchers said, "dietary supplementation with C20-22 ω3 PUFA should be considered as a viable and effective option to lower liver fat in obese adults and children with NAFLD".

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of non-alcoholic fatty liver,  pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Tocopherols, the Potential Supplementations for the Prevention of Osteoradionecrosis

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is the class of diseases associated with the growth of the cells disorderly and uncontrollably due to the alternation of DNA.

Most cases of cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissues of the organ or gland. At the early stage, most cancers are asymptomatic.

However, at the advanced stage, most cancers not can induce common symptoms such as gastrointestinal discomforts, unintended weight loss, loss of appetite, and fatigue but also localized symptoms depending on the affected tissues and organs.

Cancers at this stage also can travel a distance away from the original site to induce secondary metastasis.

According to the statistics provided by the American cancer society, in 2018,1,735,350 new cases were diagnosed, representing more than 4,700 new cancer diagnoses each day.
The lifetime probability of being diagnosed with cancer is 39.7% for men and 37.6% for women.

Compared to all cancers, lung, breast, prostate, and colorectal cancers are the most common cancer in the US.

Osteoradionecrosis is a condition associated with bone death due to radiation or radiation treatment.

The death of bone cells is a result of radiation induce-damage of the blood vessel that supplies the nutrients to the bone.

Osteoradionecrosis is a rare side effect occurred sometime after radiation therapy has ended. The complication usually occurs in the lower jaw or mandible.

Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, and seed or nut oils, etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of side effects induced by radiotherapy, researchers evaluated the healing benefit provided by the antioxidant and antifibrotic properties of pentoxifylline-tocopherol or pentoxifylline-tocopherol-clodronate in combination therapy for osteoradionecrosis.

According to the research of the related study of subjects, the combination of pentoxifylline plus tocopherol with or without clodronate was effective for the treatment of mandibular osteoradionecrosis.

Most of the identified studies were found to be from retrospective case series.

The numbers of studies were generally scarce.

Furthermore, the combination of drug therapy was well tolerated and showed a promising result for the treatment of mandibular osteoradionecrosis.

Moreover, in an18 consecutive patients previously irradiated for head and neck cancer-induced mandible, ORN with the length of the exposed bone (L) was 13.4 +/- 8 mm, and the mean of 12.6 +/- 4.9, either given a daily oral combination of 800 mg of PTX and 1000 IU of vitamin E for 6 to 24 months between June 1995 and January 2002 with eight patients who were the worst cases were given 1600 mg/day clodronate 5 days a week, all patients improved at 6 months, with 84% mean L and 67% mean SOMA score reductions.

Additionally, 18 patients achieved complete recovery, 14 in 5 +/- 2.6 months, compared to only two patients who exhibited a 75% response at 6 months.

Collectively, researchers said, "PTX-vitamin E boosted by clodronate is an effective treatment of mandibular ORN that induces mucosal and bone healing in a median period of 6 months".

Taken altogether, tocopherols used in a combination with other medicines including pentoxifylline may be considered a supplement for reducing the side effects of radiotherapy, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Beta-Sitosterol Inhibits the Risk of Chronic Inflammation in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Inflammation is the natural response of the immune system macrophages, the first line of defense in stimulating the production of inflammatory cytokines to protect our body against the infection caused by foreign microorganisms during the acute phase of body damage and injury.

Truly, the main focus of inflammation is to repair damage and injury.

Most cases of infection associated with inflammation are stopped at the acute phase. The wound or injury is slowly recovered.

However, overexpression of inflammatory cytokines in most cases can cause improper healing with scar formation or the death of nearby cells.

Any inflammation that lasts more than 3 months is considered chronic inflammation.

Chronic inflammation is the result of the immune system's inability to kill off all the microorganisms participated in the acute phase of infection, leading to the forming of autoimmune and chronic inflammatory diseases such as RA and diabetes.

Inflammation also can be caused by overexpression of free radicals compared to the antioxidant enzymes in the body. This result can lead to an imbalance of the ratio of the levels of free radicals and antioxidants, the major cause of oxidative stress.

However, people with a weakened immune system, acute inflammatory progression cannot be stopped due to the inability of the immune system to destroy all invaders, which may lead to low-grade chronic inflammation.

Epidemiologically, diseases associated with chronic inflammation are asthma, chronic peptic ulcer, tuberculosis, rheumatoid arthritis, periodontitis, inflammatory bowel inflammatory disease (ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease), sinusitis and hepatitis.

Anti-inflammation is the process that inhibits inflammation or swelling without affecting the immune property to curb foreign pathogens.

Conventionally, the most common use of anti-inflammatory medicines is over counter aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, Nuprin) and other prescription NSAIDs.

Beta-Sitosterol is a phytochemical in the class of Phytosterols, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in avocados, rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, fennel, peanuts, soybeans, hawthorn, basil, buckwheat. etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, researchers examined the topical anti-inflammatory effect of the chloroform extract from Achillea ageratum (Asteraceae) and of stigmasterol and beta-sitosterol on mouse ears edema.

According to the chemical analysis, on 12-0-tetradecanoylphorbol acetate (TPA)-induced mouse ear edema,* All the doses assayed (1, 3 and 5 mg/ear) significantly reduced the edema (50%, 66%, and 82%, respectively),

* The isolated sterols stigmasterol and beta-sitosterol (with doses of 0.5 mg/ear) had similar effects as those of extract with doses of 1 and 3 mg (59% and 65% respectively).

Furthermore, In the chronic model, the anti-inflammatory effect generally more moderate mice,
* The highest dose of the extract decreased the edema reduction to 26% with the highest dose of the extract applied, compared to the compounds the effect that decreased to 36% with stigmasterol, and 40.6% with beta-sitosterol.

* Moreover, Myeloperoxidase activity (MPO) associated with oxidative stress was reduced by the extract and the compounds in the acute model,

Based on the evidence, researchers said, "These results indicate that the chloroform extract of Achillea ageratum and some of its components stigmasterol and beta-sitosterol are more effective as topical anti-inflammatory agents in acute than in the chronic process and their action is markedly influenced by the inhibition of neutrophil migration into inflamed tissue".

Taken altogether, beta-Sitosterol may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of acute and chronic inflammation, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Ashwagandha Protects the Neurons Against Excitotoxicity

By Kyle J. Norton

A neuron or nerve cell made of a cell body (also called soma), dendrites and an axon, is a cell in the nervous system that carries electrical impulses.

Neurons are core components of the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves that play an essential role to process and transmit information.

The function of neurons can be classified into 3 types
* The sensory neurons found within the nervous system that convert external stimuli from the organism's environment into internal electrical impulses.

In other words, sensory neurons are activated by sensory input from the environment, including physical input of sound, touch, heat, or light.

*The motor neurons transmit impulses from the spinal cord to skeletal and smooth muscles,. In other words, motor neurons directly control all of the muscle movements.

* The interneurons connect the motor and sensory neurons. In other words, the interneurons transfer signals between sensory and motor neurons.

The most common diseases associated with neuron dysfunction are amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Lou Gehrig's disease or classical motor neuron disease that disrupts signals to all voluntary muscles on both sides of the body.

Excitotoxicity is the pathological process associated with neurons damage and killed by the overactivations of receptors for the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate, such as the NMDA receptor and AMPA receptor.

Where NMDAR (The N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor) is a glutamate receptor and ion channel protein found in nerve cells and glutamate is the anion of glutamic acid which plays a critical role as a neurotransmitter.

Excitotoxicity has been found to induce, neurodegenerative diseases, including multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Parkinson's disease.

Most cases of excitotoxicity have been found to be caused by spinal cord injury, stroke, traumatic brain injury,...

On finding a potent compound that processes the neuroprotective effect, researchers examined the effects of Withania somnifera anti excitotoxicity that lead to neurons' damage or killed.

Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

According to tested differentiation, Withanone isolated from Withania somnifera showed a significant activity to protect the neurons against NMDA-induced excitotoxicity in retinoic acid, differentiated Neuro2a cells.

Furthermore, the pretreatment of Withanone at 5, 10 and 20 μM doses were found to inhibit the NMDA induce- significant neuron cell death through several parameters associated with the accumulation of intracellular Ca2+,  generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), loss of mitochondrial membrane potential.

Additionally, Withanone also improved the ratio of Bax/Bcl-2 ratio, the release of cell cytochrome c and lipid peroxidation involved in neuron DNA damage and the death of neurons.

Based on the findings, researchers said," All these parameters were attenuated with various doses of Withanone pre-treatment. These results suggest that Withanone may serve as a potential neuroprotective agent".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha processed a high amount of antioxidant Withanone may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and treatment of neurological diseases including Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, pending to the result of larger sample size and multicenter study
