Omega-3 Fatty Acids Promotes Neuro-Functioning After Ischemic Stroke

By Kyle J. Norton

Cardiovascular diseases refer to heart diseases and stroke, affecting millions of people in the world.
According to statistic, over 17.7 million people died from CVDs in 2015, Hyperlipidaemia and hypertension are the risk factors of the diseases.

In other words, stroke can be caused by either ischemia, due to lack of blood flow or hemorrhagic, due to bleeding.

A stroke is a medical emergency. Early intervention is most cases can minimize brain damage and potential complications.

Not all strokes can lead to permanent brain damage. Some people with a temporary disruption of blood flow to the brain do not result in permanent damage.

Besides aging, smoking, medical conditions such as unmanaged high blood pressure and cholesterol and diabetes, obesity, physical inactivity are some of the prevalent factors found in stroke patients.

There is a general belief that stroke is an accumulation over a long period of the unhealthy diet with red meat and processed meats in the induction of artery-clogging.

Some researchers suggested that increased intake of fruits and vegetables such as carrot accompanied with good fats such as salmon, tuna, and mackerel may have a substantial effect in reduced inflammation in the arteries, improved blood flow and decreased the chance of blood clots.

Sadly, stroke is one of the most common causes of death worldwide.

In the US, according to statistics, approximately 800,000 people suffer a stroke in which 600,000 of these are first attacks, and 185,000 are recurrent attacks. Nearly three-quarters of all strokes occur in people over the age of 65.

According to the statistics, in the US, stroke is the leading cause of serious, long-term disability.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, researchers examined the effects of mega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) in alleviating ischemic brain injury in young adult rodents.

The study included aged (18-month-old) mice which were administered n-3 PUFA-enriched fish oil in daily chow for 3 months before and up to 8 weeks after 45 minutes of transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (tMCAO).

According to the results of differentiation,
* Mice receiving dietary supplementation of n-3 PUFAs for 3 months showed significant increases in brain ratio of n-3/n-6 PUFA contents.

* Furthermore, the administration of dietary supplementation of n-3 PUFAs for 3 months also markedly reduced long-term sensorimotor deficits and chronic ischemic brain tissue loss after tMCAO.

* Moreover, n-3 PUFAs robustly promoted post-ischemic angiogenesis and neurogenesis to enhance the brian neuron activity and enhanced white matter integrity after tMCAO.

* Most importantly, the enhancement of neurogenesis and white matter integrity were both correlated positively with the improvement of sensorimotor activities after tMCAO.

Collectively, researchers said, "prophylactic dietary supplementation of n-3 PUFAs effectively improves long-term stroke outcomes in aged mice, perhaps by promoting post-stroke brain repair processes such as angiogenesis, neurogenesis, and white matter restoration".

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids found abundantly in fish oil and plant oil may be considered a functional food for the improvement of long-term stroke outcomes, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Angelica May Be Prescribed for The Treatment of Ovulatory Infertility

By Kyle J. Norton

Infertility is a reproductive disease characterized by the failure to produce a pregnancy after 12 regular unprotected sexual intercourse, including pregnancy that can not be carried to term.

Infertility is very common in the US, approximately 10% of women or 6.1 million, ages 15-44 have difficulty getting pregnant or staying pregnant, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Believe it or not, only a very small number of such groups are seeking help from the professionals.

In men, age, pesticide and chemical exposure, drug use, radiation, pollution, cigarette or marijuana smoke, heavy alcohol consumption may be some risk factors for the onset of infertility.

In women, certain risk factors including age, excessive, or very low, body fat, medical conditions such as diabetes, hormone imbalance, previous miscarriage and unhealthy lifestyle, such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption may affect the ovulation of a woman.

The leading cause of female infertility, that affects nearly 25 percent of infertile couples, is a problem with ovulation, also known as an ovulatory disorder.

The ovaries are oval-shaped ovum-producing reproductive organ formed part of women reproductive system that connects to the fallopian tubes and attaches to the outer layer of the uterus via the ovarian ligament. Usually, the left and right ovary take a turn to release an egg every month.

Painful ovulation is a condition caused by a small leakage of blood from the ovary occurring at the time of ovulation, leading to irritation of the abdominal wall that results in cramps and pain in either left or right side of the abdomen depending on which side of ovaries is responsible for the development of follicles.

Ovulatory infertility is a condition of infertility associated with ovulatory problems including irregular or infrequent ovulation or no ovulation at all.

According to statistics, 25% of female infertility is involved in ovulatory infertility.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of infertility in females scientists analyzed Professor Ma Kun's collected medication in treating anovulatory infertility, her prescriptions for treating anovulatory infertility in 2012-2015.

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

According to the differentiation of a total of 684 prescriptions and 300 kinds of herbs were screened out, with a total frequency of 11 156 times,
* The top three frequently used herbs by effect were respectively tonic herb, blood circulation promoting herb, and Qi-circulation promoting herb.

* The top three tastes were sweetness, bitterness and pungent flavor. The results showed 28 herbs with a high frequency of ≥100.

Compared to the top 10 frequent use herbal medicine for the treatment of ovulatory infertility, Angelica Sinensis Radix is the most frequently used herb compared to Cyperi Rhizoma, Chuanxiong Rhizome, Paeoniae Radix Rubra, Cyathulae Radix, Taxilli Herba, Cuscutae Semen, Codonopsis Radix, Ligustri Lucidi Fructus, Paeoniae Alba, and Paeoniae Radix Alba.

In other words, herbal angelica process the properties that were used by professor Ma for the treatment of anovulatory infertility, because of the herbal effects in nourishing the kidney and activating blood throughout the treatment course and attached the importance to the relationship between Qi and blood and the regulation of liver, spleen, and kidney.

Taken altogether, herbal angelica used alone or in a combination with other herbal remedies may be used for the treatment of ovulatory infertility, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cruciferous Vegetables Gobbles Up Melanoma Cells in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Skin diseases are conditions of skin damage and classified according to each pathogenic cause.

Most cases of skin disease are involved in allergens, irritants. However certain medical conditions such as irritable bowel disease, autoimmune diseases, and genetic preposition can also cause r skin diseases.

Recent studies suggested that a poor diet is also associated with the onset of skin diseases such as the dermatological disease may be linked to systemic disease, and dietary changes may affect health outcomes, as in psoriasis.

Skin melanoma is a skin cancer characterized by the alternation of the pigment-containing cells known as melanocytes. However, in rare cases, melanoma can also occur in the mouth, intestines, or eye.

Most cases of melanoma start in melanocytes on skin before spreading to the nearby tissue. In the advanced stage, the cancer cells can also travel a distance away from the originated site to infect other tissues and organs, leading to secondary metastasis, through the circulation of blood and fluids.

The most common sites of melanoma metastasis are the lung and breast.

According to the statistic, melanoma skin cancer is increasing and anticipated to continue to rise. In the United States, approximately 70,230 new cases of melanoma were diagnosed, causing the death of 8,790.

The causes of melanoma skin cancer are associated with the alternation of the pigment cells in the skin. Why some people are susceptible to the onset of the disease while others do not even share similar health conditions, family history, and ethnicity.

However, according to the epidemiological studies, genetic mutation inherited from the parent, exposure to the environmental toxins and sun UV rays are the most common associated with the increased risk of melanoma skin cancer.

On finding a potential plant that processes anti-cancer activity researchers investigated the effects of indole-3-carbinol (I3C), a natural anti-cancer phytochemical derived from cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage and broccoli, as a new chemical scaffold of small molecule enzymatic inhibitors of NEDD4-1 on human cancer cell lines.

Where NEDD4-1 is a proto-oncogenic ubiquitin ligase for PTEN, a tumor suppressor that plays a critical regulator for multiple cellular processes. The gene is mutated or deleted frequently in various human cancers.

According to the tested assays,
*  I3C's stable synthetic derivative 1-benzyl-I3C showed to directly inhibit NEDD4-1 ubiquitination activity.

* Furthermore, compared to I3C, which has an IC50 of 284μM, 1-benzyl-I3C was a significantly more potent NEDD4-1 enzymatic inhibitor with an IC50 of 12.3μM.

* The compounds 2242 and 2243, (the two indolecarbinol analogs with added methyl groups) result in a more nucleophilic benzene ring π system, further enhanced potency with IC50s of 2.71μM and 7.59μM, respectively.

* Most importantly, the indolecarbinol compounds inhibited human melanoma cell proliferation in a manner that generally correlated with their effectiveness as NEDD4-1 enzymatic inhibitors.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " I3C analogs represent a novel set of anti-cancer compounds for the treatment of human melanomas and other cancers that express indolecarbinol-sensitive target enzymes".

Taken altogether, cruciferous vegetables consisting of indole-3-carbinol (I3C) and five novel synthetic analogs may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of melanoma, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Oleanolic acid Processes Anti-Inflammatory and Anti-Apoptotic Activity in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Inflammation is the natural response of the immune system macrophages, the first line of defense in stimulating the production of inflammatory cytokines to protect our body against the infection caused by foreign microorganisms during the acute phase of body damage and injury.

Truly, the main focus of inflammation is to repair damage and injury.

Most cases of infection associated with inflammation are stopped at the acute phase. The wound or injury is slowly recovered.

Acute inflammation occurs quickly or within the hours and lasts a few days or weeks and the damaged tissues are healed themselves after all pathogens are killed off.

However, if the immune system can not completely eradicate all invaders in the acute phase of infection, it will compromise, leading to chronic low-grade inflammation, a major cause of cardiovascular disease, arthritis, and diabetes.

Chronic inflammation is a low-grade inflammation caused by the inability of the immune system to eliminate the invasive pathogens that occurred in the acute phase of infection.

Any inflammation that lasts more than 8 weeks is considered chronic inflammation.

Believe it or not, worldwide, 3 of 5 death are results from chronic inflammatory diseases like stroke, chronic respiratory diseases, heart disorders, cancer, obesity, and diabetes.

In the US, chronic inflammatory diseases affect more than 50 million Americans each year.

Anti-inflammation is a process that inhibits the pro-inflammatory cytokines without affecting the immune system activity against pathogens.

Diseases associated with low-grade inflammation include diabetes and cardiovascular.

Conventionally, Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are the most common medical drugs such as aspirin. ibuprofen in reducing inflammation associated with pain-relieving.

Oleanolic acid is a phytochemical in the subclass of Triterpenoid, belonging to the group of Terpenes found abundantly in honey mesquite, garlic, java apple, clove, etc.

On finding a potential plant in the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases, researchers examined the effect of Oleanolic acid (OA), as a triterpenoid, has anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic activities on motor function in Spinal cord injury (SCI) mice.

According to the results of the analysis,
* OA in a dose-dependent manner up-regulated the spinal cords of SCI mice and improved blood-spinal cord barrier.

* OA treatments significantly reduced the apoptotic cell death in spinal cord samples of SCI mice by decreasing the expression pro-apoptotic cleaved Caspase-3.

* Furthermore, OA significantly attenuated the pro-inflammatory response in SCI mice.

* Most importantly, SCI mice exhibited higher activation of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) and nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) signaling pathways involved in cell death but these effects were clearly blocked in SCI mice with OA treatments.

In other words, in vivo, OA exerted the protective effects against SCI induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated mouse neurons mainly through the suppression of apoptosis and inflammatory response.

Taken altogether, Oleanolic acid may be considered a remedy that processes inflammatory and apoptotic activity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Healthy Foods Brassica rapa Inhibits the Onset of Acute Liver Injury in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal organ found in the human which plays an essential role in filtering the blood from the digestive system before passing them to other parts of the body.

The liver also produces cholesterol, a waxy substance which aids digestion, builds cell membranes and produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.

Liver disease is a class of medical conditions characterized by the reduction of partly or completely the function of the liver, including liver failure.

Most common types of liver disease in the US are
* Hepatitis C (26%) is a liver disease caused by liver inflammation caused by viral Hepatitis C, leading to irreversible liver scars. Over time, the condition can also induce liver cancer.

* Alcoholic liver disease (21%) is a condition that caused long-term excessive alcohol drinking. It is known that years of alcohol abuse can cause the liver to become inflamed and swollen. Over time, it has been found to induce the formation of liver scars, known as cirrhosis. Cirrhosis is the final stage of liver disease.

* Hepatitis C plus alcoholic liver disease (15%).

* Cryptogenic causes (18%) is a condition with no apparent underlying reason. However, most researchers suggested that many cases of cryptogenic cirrhosis are likely caused by non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a condition of fat accumulated in the liver.

* Hepatitis B and D (15%) are liver diseases caused by liver inflammation caused by viral Hepatitis C, leading to irreversible liver scars. Over time, the condition can also induce liver cancer.

Human toxicity is a general term refers to any substance which causes harm to human health if inhaled, ingested or absorbed through the skin.

Liver toxicity is a process that causes liver damage by reducing the function of the liver.

Liver oxidative stress caused by a toxic substance such as an overdose of the supplement has been found to constitute most cases of acute liver damage.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color with a mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant from the continent of Europe.

With an aim to find a natural food for the prevention and treatment of liver diseases, researchers examined the hepatoprotective effects of B. Rapa polysaccharides (BRPs) on acute liver injury induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4 ) in mice.

According to the results of Mice treated with CCl4 after the oral administration of BRPs (55, 110 and 220 mg/kg) or bifendate (100 mg/kg) for 7 days,
* BRP pre-treatment significantly decreased the enzymatic activities of liver oxidative stress markers ALT, ALP and AST in the serum, by increasing the activities of antioxidant enzymes SOD and GSH-Px in the liver and reduced the MDA concentration in the liver.

* BRPs alleviated hepatocyte injury and markedly inhibited the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6.

* Furthermore, BRPs downregulated the CCl4 -induced hepatic tissue expression of caspase-3 involved in cell apoptosis.

* Moreover, BRPs inhibited the JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway associated with the inhibition of cell division and stimulation of inflammation in a dose-dependent manner in the liver.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, " BRPs exert hepatoprotective effect against the CCl4 -induced liver injury via modulating the apoptotic and inflammatory responses and downregulating the JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway"
Taken altogether, Brassica rapa may be considered supplementation for the prevention of acute liver damage, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Elecampane (Inula helenium) Induce the Death of Human Leukemic Cells in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Leukemia is a medical condition arisen from the abnormal white blood cells produced by the bone marrow.

Depending on the malignant granulocytes or lymphocytes, leukemia is classified into myelogenous or lymphoblastic leukemia.

Bone marrow, containing two main types of stem cells is the soft tissue inside the hollow center of the major bone, including the spine, pelvis, underarm, leg. etc. with the main function of generating blood cells.

Believe it or not, the bone marrow produces 200 billion new red blood cells every day, to replace the blood cells that die off, along with white blood cells and platelets.

There are several forms of leukemia, including acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL), acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML).

CLL and AML are the most common cancers in adults and ALL are most common in children.

In contrast to chronic leukemias that take months or years to develop, acute leukemias start and develop within days or weeks.

According to Leukemia Research, Leukemia causes the death of approximately 68,000 every year. Adults are 10 times more likely to develop the disease, compared to children.

And, Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is the 7th most common cancer in the U.S. The 5-year survival rate for all subtypes of leukemia is 61.4 percent.

Acute leukemia is a condition caused by a rapid increase in the numbers of extreme immature white blood cells which appear in the bloodstream in the other parts of the body, including tissue and organs,

Chronic leukemia is a condition of the slow but still excessive build-up of relatively mature abnormal white blood cells. The condition has a tendency to spread slowly to other parts of the body through the bloodstream and/or lymphatic system, including chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML).

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of leukemia, scientists examined Gaillardin (GLN), a sesquiterpene lactone isolated from the chloroform extract of Inula oculus-christi L. on human leukemic cells.

Elecampane, also known as Horse-heal (Inula helenium) is a perennial composite plant, genus nulla, belonging to Asteraceae, native to Southern Europe, and Asia.

The plant has been used in traditional and herbal medicine in treating bronchitis or emphysema, night sweats, pulmonary tuberculosis, irritating cough, catarrhal discharges, etc.

According to tested analysis,
* GLN could induce cytotoxic effects in human acute T lymphoblastic leukemia (MOLT-4) and B cell precursor leukemia cell line (NALM-6) with IC50 values of 7.3 and 6.1 μM, respectively.

* Furthermore, GLN induces cytotoxicity through G0/G1 phase arrest followed by apoptosis in a dose-dependent manner without affecting the normal cells.

In other words, GLN showed an extend chemotherapeutic sensitivity in ALL cells by reducing VCR concentration without constraining its effectiveness.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, "(Taken together, GLN) it might act as a promising anticancer agent for the treatment of leukemia".

Taken altogether,  Elecampanemay be considered a remedy for the treatment of leukemia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Fermented Soy Lowers Blood Cholesterol

By Kyle J. Norton

Cholesterol is a waxy substance that is produced either by the liver or injected from animal food sources.

Cholesterol found in our body is needed for our body to build cell walls, hormones, and vitamin D, and create bile salts that aid digestion. However, too much of them, in most cases due to the intake of animal protein can cause plaques built up on the arterial wall, the major cause of heart disease and stroke.

More precisely, if levels of low-density lipoprotein are high compared to high-density lipoprotein which returns the accessed cholesterol back to the liver, you have high blood cholesterol.

In other words, healthy blood cholesterol is any level with either less than or equal to 4 (low-density lipoprotein/ 1 (high-density lipoprotein).

The most common diseases associated with high cholesterol are cardiovascular disease, including coronary heart disease, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease.

Most patients with high cholesterol also have diabetes and high blood pressure.

Hyperlipidemia is a condition of abnormally high levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream.

High blood cholesterol is the most common cause of hyperlipidemia.

According to statistics provided by the CDC, more than 12% of adults age 20 and older are living with high blood cholesterol with a total cholesterol higher than 240 mg/dL. and more than 18% had high-density lipoprotein (HDL, or “good”) cholesterol levels less than 40 mg/dL.

In other words, hyperlipidemia has a high prevalent ratio that affects over 100 million Americans and the condition is increasing at an alarming rate due to overweight and obesity.

Believe it or not, only half of the people with high blood cholesterol benefits from taking the lowering blood cholesterol medicine.

Fermented soy products are diverse varieties of soy food that are made from fermented soybeans, including miso, natto, tempeh, and soy sauce.

On finding a potential plant that processes high blood cholesterol activity researchers examined the health benefits of QCAN® Plus-an easily available fermented soy drink.

According to the results of the analysis of the study that was performed in lean (n = 10) and obese (n = 10) subjects during pre-soy (weeks -2, -1, and 0), on-soy (weeks 1, 2, 3, and 4), and post-soy (weeks 6, 8, 10, and 12) periods,
* Total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels were significantly reduced in both lean and obese individuals during on-soy (P ≤ .05).

* Furthermore, cytokines such as platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) AA and AB/BB were significantly lowered on-soy compared with pre-soy (P ≤ .05) in lean subjects and PDGF AA, IL-1RA, and GMCSF were significantly reduced on-soy (P ≤ .05) in obese subjects.

* The product is safe.

In other words, QCAN® Plus-an easily available fermented soy drink. showed a strong effect on the inhibition of high blood cholesterol and lipid oxidation.

Collectively, researchers said, "Our preliminary study on Q-CAN Plus ensures its safety for consumption and highlights its hypolipidemic and suppressive effect on certain cytokines ".

Taken altogether, fermented soy may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of high blood cholesterol, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
