Fermented Soy Lowers Blood Cholesterol

By Kyle J. Norton

Cholesterol is a waxy substance that is produced either by the liver or injected from animal food sources.

Cholesterol found in our body is needed for our body to build cell walls, hormones, and vitamin D, and create bile salts that aid digestion. However, too much of them, in most cases due to the intake of animal protein can cause plaques built up on the arterial wall, the major cause of heart disease and stroke.

More precisely, if levels of low-density lipoprotein are high compared to high-density lipoprotein which returns the accessed cholesterol back to the liver, you have high blood cholesterol.

In other words, healthy blood cholesterol is any level with either less than or equal to 4 (low-density lipoprotein/ 1 (high-density lipoprotein).

The most common diseases associated with high cholesterol are cardiovascular disease, including coronary heart disease, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease.

Most patients with high cholesterol also have diabetes and high blood pressure.

Hyperlipidemia is a condition of abnormally high levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream.

High blood cholesterol is the most common cause of hyperlipidemia.

According to statistics provided by the CDC, more than 12% of adults age 20 and older are living with high blood cholesterol with a total cholesterol higher than 240 mg/dL. and more than 18% had high-density lipoprotein (HDL, or “good”) cholesterol levels less than 40 mg/dL.

In other words, hyperlipidemia has a high prevalent ratio that affects over 100 million Americans and the condition is increasing at an alarming rate due to overweight and obesity.

Believe it or not, only half of the people with high blood cholesterol benefits from taking the lowering blood cholesterol medicine.

Fermented soy products are diverse varieties of soy food that are made from fermented soybeans, including miso, natto, tempeh, and soy sauce.

On finding a potential plant that processes high blood cholesterol activity researchers examined the health benefits of QCAN® Plus-an easily available fermented soy drink.

According to the results of the analysis of the study that was performed in lean (n = 10) and obese (n = 10) subjects during pre-soy (weeks -2, -1, and 0), on-soy (weeks 1, 2, 3, and 4), and post-soy (weeks 6, 8, 10, and 12) periods,
* Total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels were significantly reduced in both lean and obese individuals during on-soy (P ≤ .05).

* Furthermore, cytokines such as platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) AA and AB/BB were significantly lowered on-soy compared with pre-soy (P ≤ .05) in lean subjects and PDGF AA, IL-1RA, and GMCSF were significantly reduced on-soy (P ≤ .05) in obese subjects.

* The product is safe.

In other words, QCAN® Plus-an easily available fermented soy drink. showed a strong effect on the inhibition of high blood cholesterol and lipid oxidation.

Collectively, researchers said, "Our preliminary study on Q-CAN Plus ensures its safety for consumption and highlights its hypolipidemic and suppressive effect on certain cytokines ".

Taken altogether, fermented soy may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of high blood cholesterol, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Healthy Food Cabbage May Prevent Damages Induced by Myocardial Infarction

By Kyle J. Norton

Myocardial infarction is a severe and medical emergency characterized by the obstruction of the blood supply to the brain, causing local brain neurons to death. Prompt treatment can minimize brain damage and potential post disease complications.

In other words, myocardial infarction (MI) occurs due to the imbalance in oxygen supply and demand caused by plaque rupture with thrombus formation in an artery, leading to the reduced blood flow to the heart.

The occurrence and extent of brain infarction are associated with three basic factors, including the site of arterial occlusion, the rapidity of arterial occlusion, and the presence or absence of collateral circulation.

In other words, brain infarction can be classified into myocardial infarction due to plaque rupture and myocardial oxygen supply-demand imbalance secondary to other acute illnesses.

The exact causes of a blood clot to induce acute brain infarction are unknown. Plaques accumulation in the arteries associated with hardening and stiffing arterial walls is a leading cause of cardiovascular disease, including stroke.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, every year, approximately, about 790,000 Americans have a heart attack, including 580,000 cases of a first heart attack and 210,000 to people who have already had a first heart attack.

The most common symptoms of MI are pressure, tightness, pain, or a squeezing or aching sensation in your chest, digestive discomforts such as nausea, indigestion, heartburn, abdominal pain, shortness of breath and dizziness.

Conventionally, treatment of myocardial infarction is a focus to reduce the damage of the heart muscle accomplished through medical or mechanical means.

Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belongings to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem with a crowded mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.

On findings a natural wholefood for the treatment of post-stroke, researchers examined the effects of anthocyanin-rich red cabbage extract (ARCE) on H2O2 treated rat neonatal cardiomyoblasts (H9c2 cells) and isoproterenol (ISO) induced rodent model of myocardial infarction.

According to the tested analysis,
* H2O2 treated H9c2 cells recorded cytotoxicity (48-50%) and apoptosis (57.3%), compared to the reduction in the presence of ARCE (7-10% & 12.3% respectively).

* Rats pretreated with ARCE for 30 days followed by ISO treatment recorded favorable heart: body weight ratio as compared to ISO treated group.

* Furthermore, the mRNA levels of enzymatic antioxidants (sod and catalase) and apoptotic genes (Bax and BCL-2) in the ARCE+ISO treated group was similar to the control group suggesting that ARCE pretreatment prevents ISO induced depletion of enzymatic antioxidants and apoptosis.

* Moreover, ARCE+ISO treated group (4.5%) recorded results comparable to control (0%) in infracted areas (10%) and derangement of the myocardium.

* ARCE+ISO treated group accounted promote the caveolin-3 associated with the heart muscle and SERCA2a expression involved in the reduce risk of heart failure, compared to the ISO treated group an indication of ARCE in the mediated reduction in membrane damage and calcium imbalance.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, "Overall this study elucidates the mechanism of ARCE mediated prevention of experimentally induced myocardial damage".

Taken altogether, cabbage may be used for the treatment of myocardial infarction, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Omega 3 Fatty Acid Inhibits the Onset of Diabetic Dyslipidemia

By Kyle J. Norton

Diabetes is a chronic condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose.

In other words, diabetes occurs when cells in the pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol. In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system.

Most common types of diabetes are
* Type 1 diabetes, also known as juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes, the most common form diabetes found in children is a condition in which the pancreas does not produce any insulin. The most common form of type 1 diabetes is caused by genetic mutation and some viruses.

* Type 2 diabetes is a medical condition characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose due to either cell in pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol.

* Gestational diabetes is a form of diabetes that can occur during pregnancy, affecting between 3% and 20% of pregnant women.
Fat including cholesterol and triglycerides consists of hydrocarbon molecules.

Hyperlipidemia is a medical condition characterized by abnormally high levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream.

Overexpression of cholesterol levels in the bloodstream has been linked to plaques accumulation on the arterial walls, a major cause of some forms of heart disease and stroke.

Untreated high blood cholesterol has been found to induce serious complications including carotid artery disease, coronary heart disease, peripheral artery disease, and stroke.

Diabetic dyslipidemia is a condition associated with low high-density lipoprotein (HDL), increased triglycerides, and postprandial lipemia in diabetics.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of diseases associated with diabetes, researchers examined the effects of ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids from different sources on glucolipid metabolism in type 2 diabetic patients with dyslipidemia.

According to the results of the analysis of the participants (n=180) from the diabetes specialist clinic at the Guanlin hospital in Yixing city, Jiangsu Province from February 2017 to March 2017 who were randomly assigned to 3 g/day fish oil (FO), perilla oil (PO), or fish oil mixed with linseed oil (FLO) for 6 months,
* A total of 156 subjects aged (62.6±8.6) years completed the final follow-up after 6 months (FO,54 subjects; PO,52 subjects; FLO,50 subjects).

* Serum glucose, glycated hemoglobin, C peptide, insulin, and homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance were not significantly different among the three groups after 6 months.

* Serum triglyceride decreased, whereas high-density lipoprotein cholesterol increased in FO [1.33 (1.05,1.93) mmol/L, (1.36±0.29) mmol/L, respectively] compared with PO [1.71 (1.23, 2.17) mmol/L, (1.23±0.22) mmol/L, respectively] and FLO [1.51 (1.12, 2.22) mmol/L, (1.29±0.30) mmol/L, respectively] (P<0.05).

* Serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and apolipoprotein B decreased in PO [(2.60±0.57) mmol/L,(0.96±0.23) g/L, respectively] compared with FO [(2.89±0.76) mmol/L, (1.07±0.30) g/L, respectively] (P<0.05).

* Serum lipoprotein(a) decreased in FLO [130.7 (63.3,270.6) mg/L] compared with FO [137.4 (58.7,333.2) mg/L] (P<0.05).

* Serum free fatty acid decreased in FLO [(0.43±0.15) mmol/L] compared with PO [(0.53±0.22) mmol/L] (P<0.05)

Moreover, researchers said, "The effects of ω-3 PUFA from different sources on glucose metabolism in type 2 diabetic patients with dyslipidemia are similar. Each of them has a good application prospect in improving lipid metabolism".

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of diabetic dyslipidemia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Tocopherols Suppress the Onset of Metabolic Syndrome

By Kyle J. Norton

Metabolic syndrome is a group of conditions associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and types 2 diabetes, including high blood pressure, sugar, cholesterol and triglyceride levels and excess body fat around the waist.

Epidemiological studies suggested if you have 3 of the above syndrome, you have metabolic syndrome.

According to statistics, metabolic syndrome is a growing prevalence in the Western world, In the US, 30% of Americans are living with metabolic syndrome,

In other words, 1 in 5 people in Canada has metabolic syndrome, affecting 19.1% of all Canadian adults.

The CDC statistic suggested, among US adults aged 18 years or older, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome rose by more than 35% from 25.3% to 34.2% according to the data from 1988–1994 to 2007–2012.

Symptoms of signs of metabolic syndrome depending on types of affected conditions and complications.

The exact causes of metabolic syndrome are unidentified. However, researchers suggested eating too many calories, particularly in a high-fat diet, physical inactivity, and excessive weight gain are some of the most common and prevalent factors in elevated the risk of metabolic syndrome in the Western world.

Most people with metabolic syndrome do not experience any symptoms until the condition progression into a later stage, overtimes, leading to insulin resistance and plagues built-up on the wall of the arteries.

Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, and seed or nut oils, etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of chronic diseases, researchers examined the effect of α- and γ-tocopherol levels on metabolic syndrome.

According to the analysis of the magnetic resonance imaging in 641 individuals (mean age 61 years; 40.6% women),
* The α- tocopherol/cholesterol ratio was positively associated with VAT (β scaled by the interquartile range (IQR): 0.036; 95%Confidence Interval (CI): 0.0003; 0.071) and MetS (Odds Ratio (OR) Odds Ratio (OR): 1.83; 95% CI: 1.21-2.76 for 3rd vs. 1st tertile).

* The γ-tocopherol/cholesterol ratio was positively associated with VAT (β scaled by IQR: 0.066; 95% CI: 0.027; 0.104), SAT (β scaled by IQR: 0.048; 95% CI: 0.010; 0.087) and MetS (OR: 1.87; 95% CI: 1.23-2.84 for 3rd vs. 1st tertile).

* The γ-tocopherol/cholesterol ratio was positively associated with VAT (β scaled by IQR: 0.066; 95% CI: 0.027; 0.104), visceral (VAT) (β scaled by IQR: 0.048; 95% CI: 0.010; 0.087) and MetS (OR: 1.87; 95% CI: 1.23-2.84 for 3rd vs. 1st tertile).

* Finally, α- and γ-tocopherol levels were positively associated with high triglycerides and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels (all Ptrend < 0.05).

After talking about other factors into account, researchers said, "Circulating vitamin E levels displayed strong associations with VAT and MetS".

Taken altogether, tocopherols used regularly may be considered adjunct therapies for the prevention and treatment of metabolic syndrome, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

* Type 1 diabetes, also known as juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes, the most common form diabetes found in children is a condition in which the pancreas does not produce any insulin. The most common form of type 1 diabetes is caused by genetic mutation and some viruses.

As of today, there is no cure for type 1 diabetes. Treatment is focusing on managing blood sugar levels with insulin injection, diet, and lifestyle change.

* Type 2 diabetes is a medical condition characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose due to either cell
Diabetic cardiomyopathy is a complication found in patients with diabetes associated with reducing the heart function in circulating blood through the body, leading to heart failure and increased the accumulation of fluid in the lungs.

Diabetic cardiomyopathy is classified into different types, depending on the damage that has been affected, including
* Microangiopathy is a disorder that affects small blood vessels, leading to impaired myocardial blood flow reserve.

* Autonomic neuropathy is a disorder that affects the nerves that manage everyday body functions, leading to abnormal blood pressure, heart rate.

* Endothelial dysfunction is a disorder associated with the damage of vascular endothelium. The condition is considered an early event of cardiovascular disease.

The most common causes of diabetic cardiomyopathy are myocardial dysfunction in the absence of overt clinical coronary artery disease, valvular disease, and other conventional cardiovascular risk factors, such as hypertension and dyslipidemia.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color with a mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant from the continent of Europe.

With an aim to find a natural food for the prevention and treatment of heart diseases, researchers examined the effect of sulforaphane, an active compound and an Nrf2 activator found in broccoli on diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM), male db/db and age-matched wild-type (WT) mice.

According to the experimental results from the analysis of broccoli sprout extract (BSE) by gavage every other day for 3 months, with four groups: vehicle (0.1 ml/10 g), BSE-low dose (estimated SFN availability at 0.5 mg/kg), BSE-high dose (estimated SFN availability at 1.0 mg/kg), and SFN (0.5 mg/kg),

* BSE, like SFN, showed a significant up-regulation of the Nrf2 transcriptional activity involved in the enhancing antioxidant enzymes observed by the increased Nrf2 nuclear accumulation and gene expression.

* The increased levels of antioxidant enzymes exerted a strong effect on the prevention of cardiac oxidative damage and inflammation.

* Additionally, the BSE at high dose provided a similar effect as did SFN.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, " BSE at high dose prevents DCM in a manner congruent with SFN treatment. Therefore, it suggests that BSE could potentially be used as a natural and safe treatment against DCM via Nrf2 activation".

Taken altogether, broccoli sprouts processed abundantly SFN may be considered supplements for the prevention of diabetic cardiomyopathy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of SFN in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Angelica Sinensis Induced Human Ovarian Cancer Cell Death in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is the class of chronic disease caused by irregular cell growth in the tissue or specific organ in the body due to the alternation of cell DNA.

The ovaries are oval-shaped ovum-producing reproductive organ formed part of women reproductive system that connects to the fallopian tubes and attaches to the outer layer of the uterus via the ovarian ligament. Usually, the left and right ovary take a turn to release an egg every month.

Ovarian cancer is medical a condition characterized by abnormal cells growth of ovarian cells that start on the surface of the inner lining of the ovary. Over time, the oversize tumor can travel a distance away to infect the nearby organ and tissue via the fluid and blood circulation.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, ovarian cancer is one of the dealy reproductive cancer in women. Every year, the disease causes more deaths than any other cancer of the female reproductive system.

The lifetime risk of getting ovarian cancer is a woman is about 1 in 78.comapred to the lifetime of dying from ovarian cancer risk of 1 in 108.

The 5-year relative survival of all stages of ovarian cancer is 47%. However, women with ovarian cancer diagnosed at the localized stage have a 5 years survival rate of over 92%.

The exact causes of ovarian cancer are not identified. However, epidemiological studies suggested that women who have endometriosis, genetic preposition such as BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene, acquired genetic mutation such as the TP53 tumor suppressor gene are susceptible to the risk of the development of the disease.

The Canadian Cancer Society in the evaluation of the risk of ovarian cancer in women who are never being pregnant or giving birth wrote, "Women who have never been pregnant have a higher risk of developing ovarian cancer than women who have been pregnant".

And, "Researchers think that the lower risk maybe because the hormones that are present during pregnancy have a protective effect. It is possible that the higher risk in women who have never been pregnant is linked to the factors that may make it difficult for her to become pregnant".

In other words, women who have at least one pregnancy are at a lower risk of ovarian cancer compared to women who do not.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of cancers, Z-Ligustilide, the most potent bioactive component of Angelica Sinensis on ovarian cancer cells.

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

According to the tested analysis,
* Z-Ligustilide resulted in apoptotic cell death by inducing oxidative stress on mitochondria.

* Furthermore. Z-Ligustilide enhanced the mitochondrial superoxide formation.

* NRF2, the antioxidant enzymes enhancer, and downstream antioxidant defense genes were elevated by tZ-Ligustilide in OVCAR-3 cells at the epigenetic level.

* Most importantly, NRF2 knockdown by siRNA resulted in increased cell death by Z-Ligustilide in ovarian cancer cells.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " Our result demonstrated the pro-survival role of NRF2 in Z-Ligustilide induced ovarian cancer cell death".

Taken altogether, angelica sinensis may be considered an antioxidant remedy for the prevention and treatment of human ovarian cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cabbage Inhibits Human Cancer Cells in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancers are a class of chronic diseases associated with irregular cell growth in the tissue and organs caused by the alternation of cell DNA.

At the advanced stage, malignant cells can travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy cells and tissues.

There are many types of cancer, depending on the location where cancer begins.

As of today, researchers do not know what are the exact cause of cancers. however many researchers believe, exposure to environmental toxins, genetic mutation, and an unhealthy diet and lifestyle are the most common risk factors associated with the onset of the diseases.

Healthy cells become cancerous if they grow uncontrollably and disorderly out of range of a normal healthy cell population which can only divide between 40 and 60 times.

According to the Hayflick limit theory, most cell survival is totally dependent on the telomeres on the ends of each chromosome.

Every time, healthy cells undergo division, the telomeres are shortened. Once the telomeres shorten to a critical length, the cells will die off. However, cancer cells can divide indefinitely.

According to the statistic provided by the UK Cancers research, in 2012, an estimated 14.1 million new cases of cancer occurred worldwide.

Sadly, more than 4 in ten cancers occurring worldwide are in countries at a low or medium level of the Human Development Index (HDI).

The Human Development Index (HDI) is a statistic composite index of life expectancy, education, and per capita income indicators, according to the definition.

In 2018, over 1,7 million new cases of cancer are diagnosed in the US, and approximately over 600,000 patients will die from the diseases.

The four most common types of cancer, occurring worldwide are lung, female breast, bowel and prostate cancer.

Early diagnosis as always is the best way to improve survival rate. Depending on types of cancer, most cancers have a 100% 5 years survival rate, if they are diagnosed at the stage of 0 and 1.

Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belongings to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem with a crowded mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.

On finding a natural wholefood for the prevention of malignant tumors, researchers examined the effects of pierisin, a protein purified from pupae of the cabbage butterfly, Pieris rapae on the human gastric cancer TMK-1 cell line and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs).

According to the results of differentiation,
* Pierisin showed cytotoxic effects in all the human cells tested, with IC50 values ranging from 0.043 ng/ml to 150 ng/ml.

* Compared to other cancer cell lines, the cervical carcinoma cell line, HeLa, was the most sensitive to pierisin, showing a 1000-fold less IC50 value than that of HUVECs.

* Furthermore, pierisin clearly induced apoptotic cell death in most cancer cell lines and HUVECs through multiple different pathways including the proinflammatory, tumor-suppressive and immunomodulatory pathways.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, "Pierisin may thus be a promising new candidate for cancer therapy".

Taken altogether, cabbage may process anti-cancer activity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
