Fermented Soy May Improve Gut Microbiota on Gastrointestinal Health and Disease

By Kyle J. Norton

Gut microbiota or gastrointestinal microbiota, the complex community of microorganisms in our digestive tracts plays a critical role in a variety of metabolic functions, including produced vitamins, synthesized all essential and nonessential amino acids, and carried out biotransformation of bile.

Gut microbiota protects the intestinal structures and functions by attaching to the gut wall against the entry of pathogenic enteroinvasive bacteria into the epithelial cells.

More precisely, the guts microbiota plays a vital role in human health, including the key processes of nutrition-enhancing the digestive functioning, lipid, and energy metabolism by inducing the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), phenolics, and other molecules, and pathogen resistance by promoting the immune functioning.

In the immune perspective, gut microbiota protects the intestines by alerting the immune response against foreign invasion through specific receptors, leading to an immune system in inducing the proinflammatory cytokines.

However, the imbalance of digestive gut microbiota has been found to induce a number of diseases, syndromes, and functional aberrations, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and wider systemic manifestations of disease such as obesity, and type 2 diabetes.

In a healthy individual, the levels of gut microbiota are balanced that allow the body to function in an optimal way.

Furthermore, gut microbiota also is found to stimulate the production of some vitamins (B and K), digest certain foods that the stomach and small intestine have not been able to digest, particularly in the combat against the aggression of other bad microorganisms.

Imbalanced gut microbiota is found in obese patients, compared to healthy weight individuals.

However, alterations in gut microbiota composition have been found in patients with a low-grade inflammatory state, leading to an increased risk of several diseases, including type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease.

Although the digestive tract can adapt to change, the loss of balance in gut microbiota may induce dysbiosis., leading to health problems of functional bowel disorders, inflammatory bowel disease, allergies, obesity, and diabetes.

Fermented soy products are diverse varieties of soy food that are made from fermented soybeans, including miso, natto, tempeh, and soy sauce.

On finding a potential plant that improves the digestive functioning, researchers examined the effect of fermented foods' (kefir, kombucha, sauerkraut, tempeh, natto, miso, kimchi, sourdough bread), health benefits on gut microbiota.

According to the results of the analysis of a randomized controlled trial (RCT) for their gastrointestinal effects (kefir, sauerkraut, natto, and sourdough bread).
* Fermented foods showed a potential probiotic effect on gut microorganisms.

* The fermentation-derived production of bioactive peptides, biogenic amines, and conversion of phenolic compounds to biologically active compounds prevent anti-nutrient risk.

* Fermented food, kefir, exerted beneficial effects in both lactose malabsorption and Helicobacter pylori eradication.

However, researchers said, "In summary, there is very limited clinical evidence for the effectiveness of most fermented foods in gastrointestinal health and disease".

Taken altogether, fermented soy may be considered a functional food for improvement of the gut microbiota, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Healthy Foods Broccoli Protects the Liver Against Toxicity

By Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal organ found in the human which plays an essential role in filtering the blood from the digestive system before passing them to other parts of the body.

The liver also produces cholesterol, a waxy substance which aids digestion, builds cell membranes and produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.

Liver protection is an action in which substances including medicine and herbal remedy were used to protect the liver against damage.

Liver disease is a broad term included any problems that cause the reduced function of the liver.

There are many risk factors that liver problems. Most cases of liver disease are diagnosed in the advanced stage, it takes years to develop.

There is no single cause of liver diseases. Researchers suggested that virus such as hepatitis A, B, C, long-term excessive alcohol drinking and genetic mutation inherited from the parents is the major risk factors associated with the early onset of the diseases.

Some researchers suggested overweight and obesity and congenital diseases such as Hemochromatosis and Wilson’s disease also are the prevalent risk factors of liver damage and diseases.

Liver damage and disease can also be caused by long-term intake of certain medications, such as paracetamol and Illegal drugs such as cocaine.

The most common symptoms of liver disease can be felt only after more than 75% of the liver is damaged, including persistent jaundice and gastrointestinal discomforts, abdominal pain, and swelling, leg and ankles swelling, itching, and pale color of stool.

The most common risk factors are genetic preposition, viruses, and long-term excessive alcohol drinking.

According to the statistic, the mortality rate infected by viral hepatitis has increased by 63% from 890,000 in 1990 to 1.45 million in 2013, according to a review of data collected in 183 countries.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color with a mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant from the continent of Europe.

With an aim to find a natural food for the prevention and treatment of liver diseases, researchers examined the effect of combined therapy with Indian mustard and broccoli on rats' liver induced hepatotoxicity by long-term vincristine (VCR)

According to the results of rat selected to the study induced liver toxicity by
* Vincristine (VCR) treated group showed signs of hepatotoxicity, including altered liver architecture and higher serum levels of liver stress markers ALT and AST.

* Vincristine (VCR) treated group also showed an impaired antioxidant potential and higher mRNA levels of IL-12 and IL-4, which are markers of apoptosis in rat livers.

In other words, VCR treatment-induced hepatocyte apoptosis through stimulating the levels of apoptotic proteins and pathways.

Most importantly, the treatment of individual administration of mustard or broccoli partially ameliorated all these responses, compared to maximum improvement in the combined therapy of both extracts.
Based on the results, researchers wrote, " Thus, the long-term administration of VCR is hepatotoxic and induces apoptosis; however, the combined therapy of both extracts mitigated these effects"
Taken altogether, broccoli may be considered a liver protective supplements, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of SFN in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids, A potential Treatment for Cardiovascular Diseases

By Kyle J. Norton

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a group of conditions associated with the heart and blood vessels.

Heart disease is a class of diseases associated with interruption of blood flow in the blood vessel or damage of the heart tissue, including coronary artery diseases (CAD) such as angina and myocardial infarction.

According to the statistics, heart disease is a leading cause of death in the US. Approximately 2000 people in the general population die of heart disease every day.

Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the most common type of heart disease, that kills over 370,000 people annually.

The causes of cardiovascular diseases are associated with the accumulation of plaques in the arteries, impeding the blood flow which carries the nutrients and oxygen to the heart, causing damage to the heart tissue and reduced function of the arteries.

High blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, weight, depression and family history associated with the early onset of plaques accumulated and impeding function of the arteries are the prevalent risk factors of cardiovascular diseases.

In other words, anything that serves to damage the inner lining of blood vessels and impedes the transportation of oxygen and nutrition to the heart can be defined as a risk of heart disease. Here are some early indication of heart disease symptoms.

According to the statistic cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women in the US with 90% of women having one risk factor.

The most common complications of heart diseases are heart failure, the condition occurs when the heart cannot adequately pump blood throughout the body and heart attack, it occurs when the coronary arteries narrow caused by building up of plaques that block the blood supply to the heart.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of chronic diseases, researchers examined the effects of omega-3-fatty acids on cardiovascular diseases (CVD).

According to the tested analysis,
* The administration of omega-3 fatty acids showed significantly reduced risk for sudden death caused by cardiac arrhythmias and all-cause mortality in patients with coronary heart disease.

* Furthermore, omega-3 fatty acids inhibited the expression of hyperlipidemia and hypertension.

* There are no significant drug interactions with oral administration of omega-3 fatty acids.

More profoundly, the American Heart Association recommends the consumption of two servings of fish per week for persons with no history of coronary heart disease and at least one serving of fish daily for those with known coronary heart disease.

Additionally, approximately 1 g/day of eicosapentaenoic acid plus docosahexaenoic acid is recommended for cardioprotection. Higher dosages of omega-3 fatty acids are found to ameliorate the elevated triglyceride levels (2-4 g/day).

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids found abundantly in fish oil and plant oil may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of CVD, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Cruciferous Vegetables Lowers the Risk of myocardial infarction in Patients with GSTT1*1 allele

By Kyle J. Norton

Stroke is the third leading cause of death. Approximate 1/4 of all stroke victims die as a direct result of the stroke or its complications.

Stroke is caused by the accumulation of cholesterol and other substances that build up the arterial walls. In other words, if cholesterol building up in the arteries is blocking the circulation of blood in any part of the body causing oxygen not to be delivered to the brain, leading to the death of some cells in the brain.

According to the statistics, every year, more than 790,000 people suffer a stroke, including 600,000 of these are first attacks, and 185,000 are recurrent attacks. Most cases of stroke occur in people over the age of 65.

Myocardial infarction is a severe and medical emergency characterized by the obstruction of the blood supply to the brain, causing local brain neurons to death. Prompt treatment can minimize brain damage and potential post disease complications.

The occurrence and extent of brain infarction are associated with three basic factors, including the site of arterial occlusion, the rapidity of arterial occlusion, and the presence or absence of collateral circulation.

In other words, brain infarction can be classified into myocardial infarction due to plaque rupture and myocardial oxygen supply-demand imbalance secondary to other acute illnesses.

Depending on the severity of the acute infarction, in serious cases, patients may also experience symptoms, paralysis of the face, arm or leg, trouble with seeing in one or both eyes.

Although, there are many factors associated with the risk of acute infarction. some researchers suggested an unhealthy diet may have a strong and negative implication on the onset of the condition.

Cruciferous vegetables are a group of vegetables, belongings to the family Brassicaceae (also called Cruciferae) with many genera, species, and cultivated all over the world in suitable climate for commercial profits, including cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and green leafy vegetables.

On finding a potential remedy for the management of post-stroke, researchers examined the association between cruciferous vegetable intake and the risk of myocardial infarction (MI) on glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) against coronary heart disease.

The study included a total of 2042 patients with a first acute nonfatal MI and population-based controls (n = 2042) living in Costa Rica, the area of residence, were genotyped for a deletion polymorphism in GSTM1 and GSTT1 and an Ile105Val substitution in GSTP1.

According to the food-questionnaire returned
* Compared with the lowest tertile of cruciferous vegetable intake, the highest tertile was associated with a lower risk of MI among persons with the functional GSTT1*1 allele (OR: 0.70; 95% CI: 0.58, 0.84) but not among those with the GSTT1*0*0 genotype (OR: 1.23; 95% CI: 0.83, 1.82) (P = 0.006 for interaction).

* Furthermore, the protective effect of cruciferous vegetable intake among those with the GSTT1*1 allele was greater for current smokers (OR: 0.54; 95% CI: 0.36, 0.79) than for nonsmokers.

* More importantly, GSTP1 and GSTM1 did not modify the association between cruciferous vegetable intake and MI.

Based on the results, researchers said, "Consumption of cruciferous vegetables was associated with a lower risk of MI among those with a functional GSTT1*1 allele, which suggests that compounds that are detoxified by this enzyme contribute to the risk of MI.".

Taken altogether, cruciferous vegetables may be considered functional remedies for the management of myocardial infarction with patients with GSTT1*1 allele, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Enchinanea Enhanced Sperm Quality and Quantity in Male Fertility In Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Anti-fertility is an act with the intention to prevent, reduce or destroy fertility by using substances such as contraceptives, herbal medicine in under-developing the world.

Contraceptives are conventional medicines that allow women to enjoy sex without the risk of getting pregnant. The contraceptive pill is the most common contraceptive agent used in the Western world.

Many women also use a contraceptive pill for the treatment of irregular menstruation, painful or heavy periods, endometriosis, acne, and premenstrual syndrome (PMS).

The most common side effects of the contraceptive pill include gastrointestinal discomforts, intermenstrual spotting, breast tenderness, headaches, and migraine, mood changes, missed periods and vaginal discharge.

Infertility is a condition of the inability of a couple to conceive after 12 months of unprotected sexual intercourse. It affects over 5 million couples alone in the U. S. and many times more in the world. Because of unawareness of treatments, only 10% seek help from a professional specialist.

Male infertility is a medical condition associated with the male's inability to cause pregnancy in a fertile female.

Male infertility accounts for 40–50% of all cases of infertility, affecting over 7% of all men.
Most cases of male infertility are the results of deficiencies in the semen, and semen quality that lead to reduced function of male fecundity.

More than 40% of the infertility of a couple is caused by the female inability to fertilize.

The most common causes of infertility in the female in the US. are aging, medical condition of endometriosis and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) which have a strong interruption of the female menstrual cycle, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and obesity.

Echinacea also is known as purple coneflowers, is a flowering plant of the genus Echinacea, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to eastern and central North America. The herb has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat or prevent colds, flu, infections by stimulating the immune function, etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of chronic diseases, researchers examined the effect of the supplementation of ginger and echinacea extract, as natural antioxidant agents, in freezing extender on the quality and fertility potential of ram epididymal spermatozoa after cryopreservation.

The study included Epididymal spermatozoa isolated from 40 testicles from 20 rams, with motility >80% and total morphological abnormalities <10% that were divided into 7 aliquots used for cryopreservation.

According to the analysis of the semen samples that were re-suspended with basicTris egg yolk diluent containing ginger and echinacea extracts (5, 10 and 20 mg/l)after 7-10 days,
* The supplementation of ginger at a concentration of 10 mg/l, as well as the addition of 10 and 20 mg/l echinacea extract significantly improved total motility and velocity parameters.

* The status of acrosome integrity and lipid peroxidation significantly improved in spermatozoa when supplemented with 10 mg/l ginger and 20 mg/l echinacea extract.

* 5 mg/l ginger extract and 20 mg/l echinacea extract significantly improved mitochondrial activity.

* The highest ratio of the dispersion of sperm chromatin was observed in spermatozoa treated with 10 mg/l ginger extract.

* The cleavage rate was markedly higher in matured oocytes that were fertilized with frozen spermatozoa treated with 20 mg/l ginger extract and 10 mg/l echinacea.

After talking about other factors into account, researchers said, "The application of ginger and echinacea extract resulted in improvement in the quality and fertility of frozen-thawed spermatozoa".

Taken altogether, herbal Enchinanea used alone or combined with ginger may be considered adjunct therapies in the treatment of male infertility, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Angelica Sinensis Induces Weight Loss in Obesity

By Kyle J. Norton

Obesity is a medical condition caused by excess body fat accumulated to some extent that impacts personal health. The hallmark of obesity is attenuated metabolism and structural cell changes in the obese fat observed by reducing metabolic activity.

Most common causes of obesity are associated with
* An increased intake of energy-dense foods that are high in saturated and trans fat, processed foods and red meat.

* An increase in physical inactivity.

That leads to the accumulation of visceral fat in the body.

Visceral fat in obesity is associated with 90% of patients with ischemic heart disease. In obese, accumulation of visceral fat is predominant in the intra-abdominal cavity.

Visceral fat is a layer of fat that surrounds the organs. Overexpression of visceral fat has been found to promote insulin resistance, diabetes, heart disease, and inflammation.

However, in non-obese subjects, visceral fat accumulation is correlated with glucose intolerance, hyperlipidemia, and hypertension.

Obesity rates have increased for all age groups in the US over the last several decades, coincidently with the periods that promoted the Western diet.

The WHO in the explanation of the causes of obesity wrote, "Changes in dietary and physical activity patterns are often the result of environmental and societal changes associated with development and lack of supportive policies in sectors such as health, agriculture, transport, urban planning, environment, food processing, distribution, marketing, and education".

Certain medical conditions such as hypothyroidism, polycystic ovary syndrome, Cushing's syndrome,..., genetic preposition and use of certain medications that can cause weight gain or water retention, such as corticosteroids, antidepressants or some seizure medications, also increases the risk of overweight and obesity.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention of overweight, scientists examined the root of Angelica sinensis (RAS) supplementation effects on FTO gene expression and methylation status in body weight on an animal model,

Angelica or Dang Gui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

According to tested analysis, of high-fat-diet (HFD) induced obese female mouse that were divided into groups according to RAS dosage in diet as follows: normal diet, HFD diet (HC), HFD with low-dosage RAS (DL), HFD with medium-dosage RAS (DM), and HFD with high-dosage RAS (DH). After RAS supplementation for 4 weeks,
* Bodyweight suppression and FTO expression associated with reduced weight in DH mice were significantly higher compared to HC mice and no significant change in FTO expression was detected between DM and DL mice or in their offspring.

* Furthermore, CpG island (the regions with a high frequency of CpG sites) in the FTO promoter was hypermethylated up to 95.44% in the HC group, 91.67% in the DH group, and 90.00% in the normal diet group.

* Most importantly, the adipocyte expression in the DH group were smaller than those in the HC group.

These results strongly suggested that RAS may have a potential role in the inhibition of obesity.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, "RAS could ameliorate obesity-induced by HFD and that the molecular mechanism might be associated with the expression of the FTO gene".

Taken altogether, Dandelion may be considered a remedy for the treatment of obesity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Brassica Genus Inhibits the Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV)-Positive Burkitt's Lymphoma

By Kyle J. Norton

Herpesvirus is a large family of DNA viruses that cause diseases, depending on types of viral infection.

According to viral classification, there are 8 types of the herpes virus, including human herpesvirus 1 that causes cold sores around the mouth. and 2 that causes genital herpes, herpes zoster that causes chickenpox and shingles, Epstein-Barr virus that causes infectious mononucleosis, cytomegalovirus (CMV) that causes mononucleosis, Human herpesvirus 6 and 7(HHV6 - 7) that causes roseola and Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV8) that causes cancer, such as Kaposi's Sarcoma.

According to statistics, in the United States, half of teens and adults under age 50 are still infected with the oral herpes virus, and about 1 in 8 have an infection with the genital herpes virus.

All herpesviruses like other viruses are nuclear-replicating, infecting healthy cells nucleus through replication of viral DNA and transcription of viral mRNA.

People infected may experience symptoms of painful sores in the genital area, anus, buttocks, thighs, itching, painful urination, vaginal discharge,..... and tender lumps in the groin.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-positive is early in the course of the illness associated with VCA-IgM antibodies caused by EBV infection.

The Epstein–Barr virus (EBV), is also known as human gammaherpesvirus 4, one of the nine known human herpesvirus types in the herpes family.

Unlike other types of the herpes virus, symptoms of EBV may vary, including extreme fatigue, fever, sore throat, and swollen lymph nodes.

Conventionally, there is no specific treatment for EBV. The most common treatment is to improve quality of life by targeting symptoms such as reducing swelling of tissues with corticosteroids

On finding a potential plant with infectious diseases, researchers compared the effects of indole-3-Carbinol (I3C) is a natural product found in broadly consumed plants of the Brassica genus, such as broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower, effects on various vegetablesEpstein-Barr virus (EBV)-positive

Based on the tested results, I3C efficiently induced apoptosis in cell lines derived from EBV-positive Burkitt's lymphomas (virus latency I/II).

However, I3C did not have any cytotoxic activity against EBV-negative Burkitt's lymphomas and immortalized EBV-infected lymphoblastoid cell lines (virus latency III).

Furthermore, The effect of I3C on cell viability. in EBV-positive Burkitt's lymphoma was attributed to C6-methylated derivative, but not other 3-substituted indoles.

Moreover, 3C treatment caused apoptosis characterized by loss of cancer cell mitochondria membrane potential and caspase activation by alternating the expression of proteins involved in the control of apoptosis and transcription regulation in EBV-positive Burkitt's lymphoma cell lines.

Particularly, I3C derivative 3,3'-diindolylmethane (DIM) prolonged survival and reduced tumor burden of mice xenotransplanted with EBV-positive Burkitt's lymphoma Daudi cells.

Based on the results, researchers said, "these results, together with previous reports from clinical trials indicating the lack of toxicity in humans of I3C and derivatives, support the use of these compounds as a new therapeutic approach for treating patients with endemic (EBV-positive) Burkitt's lymphoma".

Taken altogether, Brassica Genus may be considered anti the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-positive induced cancer remedy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
