Herbal Turmeric Exerts the Activity Similar to Cytostatic Drugs without Side Effects

By Kyle J. Norton

Cytostasis is the activity that inhibits cancer cell growth and multiplication.

Cytostatic drugs are medicines that inhibit cancer cell growth and division. Cytostatic drugs used in chemotherapy have been found to significant adverse effects.

Chemotherapy is a type of therapy that uses drugs to destroy cancer cells by keeping them from proliferation and migration.

Under normal circumstances, cell growth is a natural process. Every day millions of cell grow to replace millions of dead cells and to keep our body in balance and healthy.

Sometimes, acceleration of cell growth is necessary to prevent further damage to the body organ, such as cut, injure, etc., but after fulfilling their purposes, the growth of cells is back to a normal growth rate again.

Cancer cells are fast-growing cells ignored the cell cycle inhibitors that stop the cell from growing after certain cell cycle division compared to normal cells.

According to the statistics provided by the National Cancer Institute, approximately 38.4% of men and women will be diagnosed with cancer at some point during their lifetimes. In 2017, an estimated 15,270 children and adolescents ages 0 to 19 were diagnosed with cancer and 1,790 died of the disease.

Conventionally, cytostatic drugs are powerful for the treatment of cancers.

The exact causes of cancer are unknown. Carcinoma accounting for over 90% of cancer diagnosed, is a malignant tumor found in anywhere of epithelial tissues lining the cavities, surfaces of structures and glands, including breast, prostate, lung, and colon.

Treatment of cancer conventionally is totally depending on types, grade and stage of cancer. Surgery, radiation and chemo drugs are used for the treatment in most cases of invasive cancer.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

In the urgency to discover a natural ingredient for the treatment of cancer-associated with cytostatic drug resistance, researchers examined numerous adverse effects of mitoxantrone on drug-resistant tumors.

Curcumin, a plant-derived biomolecule isolated from Curcuma longa showed significant activity on the neoplastic and invasive potential of carcinosarcoma cells in vitro.

On the Walker-256 cells, curcumin augmented the cytostatic, cytotoxic and anti-invasive effects of mitoxantrone.

However, curcumin only strengthened the inhibitory effects of mitoxantrone on the motility of drug-resistant Walker-256 cells tin a long-term mitoxantrone/curcumin treatment.

Based on the findings, curcumin only reduced the effective doses of mitoxantrone but also inhibits the invasive potential of drug-resistant carcinosarcoma cells.

Taken altogether, turmeric processed a high amount of bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for reducing the side effects of chemo drug, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Green Peas (Pisum Sativum) Protect the Digestive Tract Against Gastrointestinal Parasitic Infections

By Kyle J. Norton

Gastrointestinal parasitic infections are inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract caused by parasites.

A parasite lived on or in a host is an organism that gets its food at the expense of the host. Parasites are also completely dependent on the host for survivals, including lice, ringworms, pinworms, and scabies.

Believe it or not, over 70 percent of parasites are not visible to the human eye, such as the malarial parasite, However, some parasites such as worms can reach many meters in length.

Most common parasites can be classified into 3 main types
* Protozoa also known as single-celled eukaryotes in the formal term, is an organism that only can multiply, or divide, within the host but also often forms group into plant-like algae and fungus-like water molds and slime molds.

* Helminths are types of worm parasites including roundworm, pinworm, trichina spiralis, tapeworm, and fluke.

* Ectoparasites are parasites that can live outside the host such as lice and fleas.

Infection is an inflammatory condition caused by a microbial invasion on body tissues

Most cases of micro-infection except viruses are treated with antibiotics. For example, medicine such as praziquantel (Biltricide) can cause the tapeworms to detach from the gut, become dissolved, and then pass out of the body.

Parasite infection can cause varying symptoms, depending on the severity and types of parasite. The most common symptoms are skin bumps or rashes, weight loss, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and vomiting, aches and pains, fatigue and tiredness and general feeling unwell.

Conventionally, treatments are total depending on the types of parasitic infection. Treatments are effective in most cases if the parasite is identified.

Green peas are species of Pisum Sativum belongings to the family Fabaceae and native to western Asia from the Mediterranean Sea to the Himalaya Mountains. The pea is a green, pod-shaped vegetable and a cool-season crop grown in many parts of the world.

On finding a potent ingredient for the treatment of digestive diseases, researchers investigated the impact of a diet rich in green peas on the development of gastrointestinal parasitic infections.

The scFv generated a panel of anti-Eimeria scFv antibody fragments with high sporozoite-neutralizing activity as antibodies,  purified either from the pea seeds demonstrated no difference in their antigen-binding activity and molecular form compositions.

Furthermore, oral delivery of flour prepared from the transgenic pea seeds had higher parasite neutralizing activity in vivo.

Moreover, The pea seed content was found to protect antibodies against degradation by gastrointestinal proteases (>100-fold gain instability) against the onset of parasitic infection.

Most importantly, feeding poultry with antibody expressing pea seeds led to significant mitigation of infection caused both by high and low challenge doses of Eimeria oocysts.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "The results suggest that our strategy offers a general approach to control parasitic infections in production animals using cost-effective antibody expression in crop seeds affordable for the animal health market".

Taken altogether, green peas may be considered a functional food for the prevention of gastrointestinal parasitic infections,  pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

The Effects of Healthy Food Common Fig or Fig (Ficus carica) on Viral Infection

By Kyle J. Norton

Infectious diseases are disorders induced by organisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites.

Out of trillions organism present on the earth, only a few hundreds have been known to cause diseases.

Most infectious diseases are passed from person to person through direct or indirect contact with the infected patient. Others can be transmitted by insects or animals.

However, infectious disease, the most prevalence in third world countries are acquired by ingesting contaminated food or water.

Infectious diseases share the common symptoms of fever, diarrhea, muscle aches, coughing, fatigue similar to those of influenza. Other symptoms are totally depending on the types of organisms including bacteria, and virus.

A viral infection is a disease caused by the successful entering and multiplying of a virus in the body.

Anti-viral effects are an act of certain substances to cause the destruction of a virus.

In the acute phase of viral infection, depending on the types of viruses, the viruses after entering the body start to attack the specific host cells. The cold and flu virus will attack the cells in the respiratory system and the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which causes AIDS, will attack the white blood cells of the immune system,

The viral infection o\has been known to carry over some different stage, after successfully attaching to the host cell, the virus to release its mRNA into the host cell, leading to the recruit of the host cell's enzymes to accelerate the viral multiplying, then breaking free from the host cell to start the cycle all over again.

Fig is a species of F. Carica, belonging to the family Moraceae. It is a deciduous shrub, native to Southeast Asia. The tree can grow to a height of 33 ft and the fruit can be as large as 2.0 inches.

On finding natural compounds for the treatment of infectious diseases, researchers examined the latex of fig fruit (Ficus carica) on skin infections with the possible viral origin.

According to the tested differentiation of 5 extracts (methanolic, hexanoic, ethyl acetate, hexane-ethyl acetate (v/v) and chloroformic) for their antiviral potential activity against herpes simplex type 1 (HSV-1), echovirus type 11 (ECV-11) and adenovirus (ADV) in vitro, the hexanoic and hexane-ethyl acetate (v/v) extracts inhibited multiplication of viruses at concentrations of 78 µg mL(-1).

Furthermore, these two extracts were possible candidates as herbal medicines for herpes virus, echovirus, and adenovirus infectious diseases.

Most importantly, all extracts had no cytotoxic effect on Vero cells at all tested concentrations.

Taken altogether, common fig or fig (Ficus carica)  may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of viral infection, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Broccoli, a Potential Remedy for the Prevention and Treatment of Neurodegenerative Diseases (NDDs)

By Kyle J. Norton

Neurodegenerative diseases are a class of conditions associated with the progressive loss of neurons in the brain caused by several mechanisms, including toxicity and oxygen deficiency.

Most common disease associated with neurodegenerative diseases is dementia, a cluster of conditions included Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and Huntington’s disease, leading to a negative influence the body's functioning, including balance, movement, talking, breathing, and heart function.

There is no single cause of the progressive death of brain neurons. Epidemiologically, genetic preposition, medical conditions, such as alcoholism, brain cancer or a stroke in the brain are some of the most common prevalent factors found in patients with neurological diseases.

Other risk factors associated with the disease prevalence are the increase in age, the most consistent risk factor for developing a neurodegenerative disease, especially AD or PD, as the disease has been found over 60% in the population aged 65 and beyond compared to another group.

A prolonged period of toxins, toxic chemicals accumulated that affects the brain function also have a strong impact to induce the onset of the disease.

The progressive loss of neurons induced neurological and neuropsychological signs and symptoms have also been found in comparison to the stage of disease onset of patients.

Dementia is a condition of deterioration of the cognitive ability of memory, thinking, language, judgment, and behavior, gradually.

The loss of mental ability in patients with dementia in most cases is severe enough to interfere with people's every life. Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of dementia in aging people.

According to the statistics, about 5-8% of all people over the age of 65 have some form of dementia, and this number doubles every five years and above that age.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belong to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color and the mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant on the continent of Europe.

According to the WHO, neurological disorders, ranging from epilepsy to Alzheimer's disease, from stroke to headache, affect up to one billion people worldwide.

On finding a potential plant that treats age-related diseases, researchers examined the effects sulforaphane (SF), derived from the hydrolysis of the glucosinolate glucoraphanin mainly present in Brassica vegetables, anti-neuroprotective effects

The study included 16 subjects randomized, into 3-phase crossover dietary trial of standard broccoli, high glucosinolate broccoli, and water.

According to the results of the trial,
* Sulforaphane (SF) inhibited the oxidative stress that results from an imbalance of pro-oxidant/antioxidant homeostasis associated with abnormal production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) in the damage of neurons induced neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs).

* In a neonatal hypoxia/ischemia brain injury model, SF significantly increased Nrf2 and HO-1 expression involved in the production of antioxidants enzymes in the host against oxidative stress accompanied by reduced infarct volume.

In a rat model of traumatic brain injury (TBI), the postinjury administration of SF reduced the BBB impairment and cerebral edema after TBI.

* In chronic degenerative diseases,  SF inhibited the increase of oxidative stress, the impaired protein-folding function of the endoplasmatic reticulum, and deficient proteasome- and autophagic-mediated clearance of damaged proteins accelerated the accumulation of Aβ peptides and Tau protein in AD.

Taken altogether, the consequences of these results suggest that the broccoli process abundantly SF, may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs), pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids May Be Used for the Treatment of Crohn's disease (CD)

By Kyle J. Norton

Inflammatory bowel disease is a condition characterized by long term inflammation of the gut. The disease affects over 1.6 million Americans today.

The most common types of IBD are
*Crohn’s disease (CD) is an inflammation of any part of the digestive tract. Most cases of CD affect the tail end of the small intestine.

* Ulcerative colitis is an inflammation of the large intestine.

* Crohn's disease is a type of inflammatory bowel disease caused by inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract.

The exact cause of Crohn's disease is not identified. However, some researchers suggested that people with the compromised immune system and genetic preposition are prone to the disease onset compared to people who do not

The most common symptoms of Crohn's disease are abdominal pain, severe diarrhea, fatigue, weight loss, and malnutrition.

Risk factors of Crohn's disease include aging, family and person history, ethnicity, smoking and long-term use of Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications.

Conventionally, most cases of CD are treated by anti-inflammatory medications, corticosteroids, immunomodulators, and antibiotics.

According to the statistics by Crohn's & Colitis Foundation, the total number of new cases of Crohn's disease diagnosed each year was 10.7 per 100,000 people.  In other words, approximately 33,000 new cases are diagnosed each year.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases, researchers examined the omega-3 supplementation by oral capsule for patients with Crohn's disease (CD).

The study included a total of 6 patients with CD in remission who participated in this open-label clinical trial and received one bottle (100 ml) of the test formulation (IMARK S®) daily for 28 days. After a 1-month washout period, patients ingested two bottles of the formulation daily for another 28 days.

According to the results of the anthropometric and blood tests,
* There were no side effects with the quantity of the injection.

* The application did not alter the body weight and body-mass index in the participants.

* Most importantly, according to the CD activity index, participants showed a decrease in the scores after ingested one bottle of the formulation.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Supplementation with an omega-3 emulsifying formulation can be safe and useful for maintaining remission in patients with CD and warrants further studies".

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of Crohn's disease (CD), pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Beta-Sitosterol inhibits Oxidative Stress by Promoting Antioxidant Activity

By Kyle J. Norton

The expression of oxidative stress is a medical condition characterized by the imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidant enzymes produced by the host tissue.

Antioxidants are stable atom that plays a critical role in protecting the body against the attack of free radicals.

In other words, antioxidants inhibited the onset of free radical before they can cause a chain reaction in facilitating the protein, lipid and cell damage.

Antioxidants can either produced by the liver or intake from dietary sources. Under normal conditions, antioxidant enzymes produced by the body in a healthy individual are good enough to counter the bombardment of free radical attacks.

Free radicals are highly reactive molecules with an unpaired electron on the outer ring of the atom.

Due to its nature to become stable, free radicals readily to donate or steal an electron from other molecules, leading to the chain of domino's effect that can not be stopped until either the electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

This chain of reaction is the cause of oxidative stress, a condition is associated with either overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host organs.

In some cases, this reaction also is caused long-term accumulation of toxic substances in the body, such as lead, cadmium, mercury, and arsenic.

There is no single cause of oxidative stress. Some researchers suggested that a number of factors can facilitate the onset of oxidative stress, including cigarette smoke, oxidative burst from activated macrophages, particularly, the free radicals chain reaction.

Sadly, a prolonged period of oxidative stress presented in the human body can cause oxidative damage to biomolecules, (lipids, proteins, DNA) and the death of healthy cells through cytotoxicity.

Beta-Sitosterol is a phytochemical in the class of Phytosterols, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in avocados, rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, fennel, peanuts, soybeans, hawthorn, basil, buckwheat. etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers examined the beta-sitosterol (BS), a plant sterol antioxidant activity.

In vitro, HT22 cells and primarily cultured hippocampal cells induced oxidative stress by glucose oxidase (GOX) incorporate BS into the plasma membrane, prevented GOX-induced oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation.

Furthermore, incorporation of BS into the cell membrane increased the PI3K activity in the promotion of cellular function and recruitment of PI3K to lipid rafts.

Additionally, the levels of p-GSK3beta also in the promotion of cell integrity were also enhanced by the application of BS against the onset of oxidative stress.

Based on the evidence, researchers said, " ...the results provide a better understanding of the beneficial effects of these BS-enriched nutrients on neurodegenerative diseases such as AD".

Taken altogether, beta-Sitosterol may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, including AD, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Organic Cabbage Inhibits the Risk of Gastric Cancer in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

The stomach located between the esophagus and the small intestine is a muscular, hollow and important organ of the digestive tract.

Gastric or stomach cancer is a chronic condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the tissues of the stomach.

Most cases of gastric cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of stomach tissue.
Due to the small size at the early stage, gastric cancer is asymptomatic.

However, at the later stage, after penetrating into the deeper layers of the stomach, the cancer cell may travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissues and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2019, approximately, 27,510 cases of stomach cancer will be diagnosed (17,230 in men and 10,280 in women) and 11,140 people will die from gastric cancer (6,800 men and 4,340 women).

Overall, the 5-year survival rate for people with gastric cancer is 31%. Cancer diagnosed at the localized stage have a 5 years survival rate of 67%.

Gastric adenocarcinoma is a type of cancer that arises from the glands in the mucosa, including
* Superficial spreading
It is an early stage of cancer and tends to be less aggressive or ulcer.

* Polyploid
Cancer grows in a pattern like a polyp and is less aggressive.

* Infiltrating
If cancer grows in infiltrating pattern into the stomach wall and more aggressive.

* Linitis plastica
Cancer grows diffusivity throughout the whole wall of the stomach.

Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belongings to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem of which is crowded a mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.

With an aim to find a natural food for the prevention of cancers, researchers examined the effect of cabbage extract on gastric cancer cells.

According to the tested differentiation, organic fresh cabbage contained significantly less total flavonoids in both years of experiments compared to the conventional one, including several flavonoid compounds, total chlorophylls, carotenoids, nitrites, and nitrates.

Furthermore, the organic sauerkraut juice contained significantly more total polyphenols (5.39 ± 0.22 mg/100 g FW and 9.05 ± 1.10 mg/100 g FW) and several flavonoids compared to the conventional one.

Compared to only CONV sauerkraut juice produced with the highest N level of fertilization induced a statistically significant increase in the level of necrosis of human stomach gastric adenocarcinoma cell line AGS, all sauerkraut juice exerted anti-apoptotic activity in gastric adenocarcinoma cells.

Taken altogether, cabbage processed abundantly bioactive compounds including nitrites, and nitrates may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of gastric cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
