Phytochemical Beta-Sitosterol, the Anti-Bacterial Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Bacteria is a type of biological cell consisted of a single cell with a simple internal structure. The most common diseases caused by bacteria are strep throat, urinary tract infections, and tuberculosis.

Infection is an inflammatory condition caused by a microbial invasion on body tissues

Most cases of bacterial infection are treated with antibiotics. However, bacteria are very adaptable, overuse of antibiotics has been found to make them resistant to antibiotics.

The most common symptoms of bacterial infection include redness and heat, swelling, fever, pain at the site of infection.

Out of trillions of strains of bacteria in the world, only a few cause diseases in humans. Believe it or not, our gut contains trillion microorganisms, most of them are bacteria.

Infection can be acute or chronic. In the acute phase of infection. The immune macrophages in the first line of defense stimulate the production of blood palette to cover the wound and pro-inflammatory cytokines to the site of the infection to kill off pathogens.

However, overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the acute phase of infection has also killed off or damage to the nearby healthy cells, leading to the formation of scars.

Symptoms of the acute infection include gastrointestinal discomforts, such as congestion vomiting or nausea, and diarrhea, short term joint or muscle pain, fever, headache, skin rash and cough, Some patients with acute infection also experience symptoms of swollen lymph nodes, an indication of the body is fighting infection.

In most cases in a healthy individual, depending on the size of the wound, the immune system can easily eradicate all foreign invaders and the wound is recovered within days and weeks.

In chronic infection, the symptoms are most vague or no specific symptoms, including bronchitis and asthma, persistent low-grade chronic joint and muscle pain, or swelling and the alternations between diarrhea and constipation, bloating, or heartburn, In other words, the symptoms are totally depended on the location of the low-grade inflammation.

Beta-Sitosterol is a phytochemical in the class of Phytosterols, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in avocados, rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, fennel, peanuts, soybeans, hawthorn, basil, buckwheat. etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, researchers examined the antibacterial activity of compounds from the powder of root bark of Malva parviflora (Malvaceae).

According to the chemical analysis of the extracts with petroleum ether (b.p. 60–80 °C), chloroform and ethanol, the chloroform extract showed antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli compared to the effect of the ethanolic extract against only S. aureus.

The chloroform extract inhibited the bacterial strain properties were characterized as β-sitosterol by physical properties, chemical test, spectral analysis (FTIR, NMR, and MS) and compared the data obtained from the literature.

In other words,  phytochemical β-sitosterol prompted a strong anti-bacterial activity of root bark of Malva parviflora (Malvaceae)

Taken altogether, beta-Sitosterol may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of bacterial infectious diseases, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Omega 3 Protects Against the Heart Abnormal Rate or Rhythm of the Heartbeat

By Kyle J. Norton

Cardiovascular disease is a medical condition affecting the cardiovascular system, including heart, blood vessels(arteries and veins).

Heart diseases are a class of diseases characterized by a wide range of conditions, such as coronary artery disease, heart rhythm problems (arrhythmias), and heart defects......

The term of heart disease is used interchangeably with cardiovascular diseases in expressed conditions that can lead to a heart attack, chest pain (angina) or stroke, involving narrowed or blocked blood vessels,

According to the statistics, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the US, approximately 610,000 people die of heart disease every year,  representing 1 in every 4 deaths. And coronary heart disease(CHD) is the most common type of heart disease, which kills over 300,000 people in 2015.

Coronary heart disease (CHD) kills over 370,000 people annually.

An arrhythmia is a condition associated with an abnormal rate or rhythm of the heartbeat.

The condition is caused by the electrical impulses that coordinate the  heartbeats don't work properly, causing your heart to beat too fast, too slow or irregularly

The most common symptoms of arrhythmia are, a fluttering in the chest, a racing heartbeat, a slow heartbeat, chest pain and shortness of breath.

Conventionally, treatments of arrhythmias include medications that stop or prevent arrhythmia or control the rate of arrhythmia and cardioversion, which uses electricity to shock the heart back into a normal rhythm.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of heart diseases, researchers examined the Omega 3 fatty acid effects of marine omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in relation to ventricular arrhythmia.

According to the tested analysis, marine omega-3 PUFAs not only showed a strong activity on atrial fibrillation but also in ventricular arrhythmias.

Moreover, according to the results of studies chosen to the investigation
Rats fed diets enriched in fish oil, sunflower oil, or beef tallow for 6 weeks, with the hearts either subjected to ischemic preconditioning or not showed ischemic preconditioning reduced ventricular arrhythmias in all dietary groups.

* According to the results of heart rate and heart rate variability recorded at rest, during submaximal exercise, and during a 2-min coronary artery occlusion at rest in dogs with a healed myocardial infarction before and after 3 months supplementation with a fish oil or corn oil, fish oil, but not corn oil reduced heart rate and heart variability at rest, but not during exercise or during coronary occlusion

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids found abundantly in fish oil and plant oil may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of diseases abnormal heart rhythm, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Tocopherols Inhibits the Onset of Colorectal Cancer in Men ONLY

By Kyle J. Norton

The colon-rectum formed a part of the digestive system is involved in the absorption of water from the small bowel contents and broken down of certain materials in the feces and into substances of which some of them to be reabsorbed and reused by the body.

Colorectal cancer is a medical condition caused by cell growth irregularly in the tissue of the colon or rectum due to the alternation of cells DNA.

Colorectal cancer is relatively very common and slowly growing and progressing cancer.

The disease is also the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in developed countries, including the US and Canada.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in the US, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women compared to other types of cancer.

The lifetime risk of colorectal cancer is 1 in 22 (4.49%) for men and 1 in 24 (4.15%) for women.

Approximately, 140,000 cases of colorectal cancer were diagnosed in the US in 2018. Cancer also causes the death of over 50, 000 people, representing 8.3% of total cancer death.

Being overweight or obese. smoking, physical inactivity, excessive alcohol drinking, the increased in age, family and personal history, genetic preposition are some of the prevalent risks of the disease.

Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, and seed or nut oils, etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of cancers, researchers examined the associations of serum carotenoids, retinol, and tocopherols with colorectal cancer risk.

According to the case-control study nested within the Japan Collaborative Cohort Study, including micronutrients measured in prediagnostic serum samples from 116 men and women who developed colorectal cancer during an 8-yr follow-up period and from 298 matched controls,
* In men, the higher level of serum total carotenoids was associated with a decreased risk with the multivariate-adjusted odds ratio (OR) for the highest vs. the lowest tertile of 0.34.

* The increased serum retinol in all subjects and alpha-tocopherol also associated with a decreasing risk of cancer with the ORs for the highest tertiles were 0.29 and 0.29, respectively.

* In women, the higher levels of alpha- and total carotenoids were instead related to increased risk: with the corresponding ORs of 4.72 (95% CI = 1.29-17.3), 2.00 (0.70-5.73), and 2.47 (0.73-8.34), respectively.

Taken altogether, tocopherols may be considered a supplement for treatment of colorectal cancer in MEN only, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Cranberry Inhibits the Onset of Insulin Resistance

By Kyle J. Norton

Diabetes is a chronic condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose.

Diabetes occurs when cells in the pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol. In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system.
Insulin resistance is a condition in which cells that convert glucose to energy in the muscles, body fat, intestine, and liver ignore the signal o the hormone insulin signaling.

In other words, signals sent out by the hormone insulin was ignored by the cell of the muscles, body fat, and liver that process the function to convert glucose into energy.

Epidemiologically, people with insulin resistance are associated with an increased risk of prediabetes, type 2 diabetes and chronic conditions such as heart attacks, strokes, and cancer.

According to statistics, over 100 million Americans are living with insulin resistance. Approximately 1 in 3, including half of those age 60 and older have a silent blood sugar problem known as insulin resistance.

There are no single causes of insulin resistance, Epidemiologically, aging, ethnicity, overweight or obese, too much belly fat, physical inactivity, smoking and certain medical conditions such as Cushing’s disease or polycystic ovary disease are some of the prevalent factors that induce the risk of the condition.

However, most people with some of the aforementioned risk factors have never developed insulin resistance.

Most cases of insulin resistance in the Western world are involved in the clogged up insulin receptors.
As the signals of hormone insulin are blocked, insulin resistance develops, leading to more production of insulin by the body.

Over time insulin resistance that leads to damage to the beta cell in the pancreas, an early condition of prediabetes and types 2 diabetes.

The most common symptoms of patients with insulin resistance are tiredness, hunger and difficulty concentrating.

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of prediabetes, researchers investigated the potential of a polyphenol-rich extract from cranberry (CE) on metabolic disorders in DIO-mice

Mice selected to the study were pre-fed either a Chow or a High Fat-High Sucrose (HFHS) diet for 13 weeks to induce obesity and then treated either with CE (200 mg/kg, Chow + CE, HFHS + CE) or vehicle (Chow, HFHS) for 8 additional weeks.

According to the tested analysis, CE did not reverse weight gain or fat mass in Chow- or HFHS-fed mice.

However, HFHS + CE fully reversed hepatic steatosis by stimulating the genes involved in lipid catabolism (e.g., PPARα) and inhibiting the production of several pro-inflammatory genes in the liver.

These results were attributed to the efficacy of HFHS + CE in the improvement of the levels of glucose tolerance and normalization of insulin sensitivity in the tested mice.

Moreover, the ratio of gut microbiota was significant to improve in the HFHS + CE group compared to HFHS controls.

Taken altogether, cranberry combined with conventional medicines may be considered a remedy for the improvement of glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Omega 3 Fatty Acids Improve the Immune Functioning in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

An immune system is a system of biological structures and processes within an organism that protects against disease by identifying and killing pathogens, including bacteria, viruses, parasites, etc. and tumor cells, including irregular cells growth, cancer cells to keep us healthy.

In most cases, the immune system does a great job of keeping people healthy and preventing infections. But sometimes problems with the immune system can lead to illness and infection.

Although the immune system has done a great job in protecting us against foreign invasion, unfortunately, during the process od their functions, they may induce the production of free radicals and chain of free radicals that can be harmful to our body.

Immunomodulatory activity is an action that improves the underactive immune function susceptible to the invasion of the foreign microorganism and inhibits the overactive immune system that causes autoimmune diseases.

In other words, depending on the substances that affect the immunomodulatory process, some may improve the immune function by modulating the genes involved immune responses and protect the immune system against toxins or immunotoxic effects such as abnormal allergic reactions, other such as heavy metals can induce opposite effects.

In normal immunity, active immunity may also be artificially acquired active immunity caused by the injection of the vaccine, a substance that contains antigen and passive immunity is an auto-response of the immune system against infection through the production of antigen.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the improvement of the immune functioning, researchers examined the long-chain n-3 PUFAs (LCPUFAs) anti-atopic disease risk in infants.

The study included pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats randomly assigned to consume either SDA (3 g SDA/100 g fat) or a control (no SDA) diet, 5 d before parturition and through lactation (21 d).

Additionally, for oral tolerance (OT) treatment, 10-d-old pups were fed ovalbumin (Ova; 200 μL of 8 mg/mL) or placebo daily for 5 d. At 21 d,

According to the experimental results of pups (both sexes) that were weaned to their respective maternal diet until 6 wk of age and killed, the SDA-enriched maternal diet showed a higher levels of plasma phospholipid (PL) EPA (15 times higher), docosapentaenoic acid (DPA; 3 times higher), and DHA (1.3 times higher) content in 3-wk-old pups, accompanied by higher B-cell function [plasma ovalbumin-specific IgG1, compared with the control diet.

Furthermore, compared with pups fed a control diet, the splenocytes from pups fed with the SDA diet had more (23%) helper T (Th) cells (CD3+CD4+) and activated (12%) Th cells (CD4+CD28+) (P < 0.02) than controls.

Moreover, at 6 wk, the SDA group stimulated ex vivo with LPS, also had 30% more CD4+CD25+ splenocytes and produced less inflammatory IL-6 (50%) and TNF-α (30%) and more immunoregulatory IL-10 (45%) cytokines, compared to the control group.

However, the splenocytes and plasma PLs from the 6-wk-old SDA group had more EPA (2x) and DPA (3.5x) (P < 0.05), but not DHA, compared to the control group.

Additionally, the Ova-exposed group also had less (30%) plasma Ova-IgG1 than the placebo group.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Feeding SDA during lactation and weaning altered immune responses in directions believed to be beneficial".
Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids may be considered a functional food for the improvement of the immune response, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Cruciferous Vegetables Reduce the Risk of Atherosclerosis

By Kyle J. Norton

A cardiovascular disease is a group of conditions triggered by the abnormal function of the heart and blood vessels.

The 3 most common forms of cardiovascular disease in North America are coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, and carotid artery disease caused by plaques build-up of plaque in the arteries that supply blood to the heart, the arms and legs, and the brain.

Atherosclerosis is a medical condition caused by plaques accumulated on the wall of the arteries, leading to narrowing the arteries in transporting oxygenated blood to the heart and other parts of the body.

Atherosclerosis is a slow, progressive disease that may begin as early as childhood, caused by damage to the inner lining of the artery. However, the actual causes of the condition are debatable.

Depending on the blood obstruction, atherosclerosis can induce different types of heart disease and stroke.

Plaque is the make of cholesterols, calcium, and other toxic substances, including cadmium.

According to the statistics provided by Atherosclerosis Open Acess, 32% of deaths account for atherosclerosis, including  13.8% among adults of 20 years and above. In 2010, coronary heart disease mortality rate was about 60%.

Risk factors of atherosclerosis include high blood pressure and cholesterol, diabetes, being overweight or obese, an unhealthy diet, a family history of heart disease and physical inactivity, particularly smoking.

Some researchers suggested that since cholesterol makes up a big part in the plaque, an unhealthy diet with high saturated trans fat, red meat and processed meat may be the major cause of atherosclerosis.

Cruciferous vegetables are a group of vegetables, belongings to the family Brassicaceae (also called Cruciferae) with many genera, species, and cultivated all over the world in suitable climate for commercial profits, including cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and green leafy vegetables.

On finding a potential remedy for the prevention of plaque accumulated on the arterial wall, researchers the effect of vegetable intake alone, and relationships to specific types of vegetables containing different phytochemical profiles on atherosclerosis.

According to the food-questionnaire returned by the participants, using the total vegetable intake calculated at baseline (1998),
* Women consuming ≥3 servings of vegetables each day had ≈4.6% to 5.0% lower mean common carotid artery IMT (CCA-IMT, P=0.014) and maximum CCA-IMT (P=0.004) compared with participants consuming <2 servings of vegetables.

* Furthermore, for each 10 g/d higher in cruciferous vegetable intake, there was an associated 0.006 mm (0.8%) lower mean CCA-IMT (P<0.01) and 0.007 mm (0.8%) lower maximum CCA-IMT (P<0.01).

* Some vegetable types showed no associated with CCA-IMT (P>0.05).

* Interesting, there were no associations observed between vegetables and plaque severity (P>0.05).

Based on the results, researchers said, "Increasing vegetables in the diet with a focus on consuming cruciferous vegetables may have benefits for the prevention of subclinical atherosclerosis in older adult women".
Taken altogether, cruciferous vegetables may be considered functional remedies for the prevention of atherosclerosis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cabbage, the Potential Anti inflammatory Healthy Food

By Kyle J. Norton

Anti-inflammation is the process that inhibits inflammation or swelling without affecting the immune property to curb foreign pathogens.

Inflammation is a natural response by the immune system to protect the body against the invasion of stimuli or foreign pathogens.

Acute inflammation is a short-term condition that lasts less than 3 weeks caused by tissue injury, leading to pain, redness, swelling, and heat to the affected area. depending on the size of the injury. Some patients with acute inflammation may also experience the symptom of loss of function.

In acute inflammation, the white blood cells on the first line of defense of the immune system after sensing the danger of an infection in the body through a message from the brain stimulate the production of platelets to cover the site of injury or damage and inflammatory cytokines to kill off all pathogens before they can cause harm to the body.

Most cases of infection are stopped at the acute phase. The wound or injury is slowly recovered.

However, if the immune first line of defense can not completely destroy the invaders within a period of 3 to 8 weeks, it will compromise, leading to low-grade chronic inflammation.

Diseases associated with low-grade chronic inflammation include diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.

However, in some cases, the overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines may damage nearby healthy cells and tissues, causing the formation of scars.

In severe cases, a protein with duo functions in the production of pro and anti-inflammatory cytokines which produce anti-inflammatory cytokines under normal condition also switch to produce pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Conventionally, the most common use of anti-inflammatory medicines is over counter aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, Nuprin) and other prescription NSAIDs.

Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belongings to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem of which is crowded a mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.

With an aim to find a natural food for the prevention of diseases involved in inflammation, researchers examined the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of some common cabbage varieties.
According to the tested differentiation,
* Redheads had the highest total antioxidant contents followed by Savoy, Chinese and green heads.
* The Chinese variety had the highest ABTS (2,2-azino-di-(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-sulfonic acid) antioxidant activity, was 5.72 μmol TE/g fw (Trolox equivalent).

* The green variety had the highest DPPH (free radical scavenging activity) antioxidant activity, which was 91.2 μmol TE/g fw.

* The red variety had the highest FRAP (ferric reducing antioxidant power) antioxidant activity, which was 80.8 μmol TE/g fw.

* The total phenol amounts were 17.2-32.6 mM trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) and the total flavonoid amounts were 40.0-74.2 mg quercetin per gram.

* Methanolic extracts of different cabbage heads showed different anti-inflammatory activity values. Chinese, Savoy and green heads had the highest anti-inflammatory activity, while redheads had the lowest.

In other words, all variety of cabbages showed a strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, depending on the quantity of the contents of the bioactive compound.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, "The results suggest that these varieties of cabbage heads could contribute as sources of important antioxidant and anti-inflammatory related to the prevention of chronic diseases associated with oxidative stress, such as in cancer and coronary artery disease".

Taken altogether, cabbage processed abundantly SFN may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases, including cancer and coronary artery disease,  pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
