Kale (Brassica Oleracea) Protects the Cell DNA Against Genotoxicity

By Kyle J. Norton

Genotoxicity is the activity of substances that can cause alternation of DNA of healthy cells to promote irregular cell growth. In other words, genotoxicity induces cancers.

Genotoxins are gene mutagens that have the property of genotoxicity, including radiation and chemical toxins.

Not all genotoxicity is mutagenicity, However, all mutagens are genotoxic.

Highly genotoxic chemicals include the known potent carcinogens benzo(a)pyrene, aflatoxin B1, N-nitroso compounds, and various alkylating agents that directly act on DNA, inducing breakage and cross-linking, and the formation of DNA adducts, abasic sites, oxidative damage, alkylation, and various other DNA lesions(4).

Interestingly, some genotoxins do not directly act on DNA but cause numerical chromosome aberrations during cell division(4).

Furthermore, certain chemicals used in pesticides, food additives, starches, shampoos, and fireproof and crease-proof fabrics may be considered as genotoxins as they also cause genetic mutations.

Moreover, automobile exhaust fumes and medicine used for their antibacterial activity and in chemotherapy(5), chemicals from occupational sources and tobacco may also induce mutations and cancer(6).

Genotoxic chemotherapy is a type of cancer treatment that uses one or more genotoxic drugs to induce the death of cancer cells, by promotes the genotoxins cytotoxic effects to cause DNA damage into cancer cells.

Kale is a species of Brassica Oleracea, belong to the family Brassicaceae, native to coastal southern and western Europe. Since kale's leave is highly nutritious and easy to grow with a range of long season from the middle of winter through the beginning of spring, it is cultivated as foods in most parts of Europe.

On finding a potential wholefood for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the genotoxic and antigenotoxic activity of kale juice (Brassica oleracea L. var. acephala D.C.) in an animal model,

Male Swiss mice selected for the study were divided into groups of 6 animals, which were treated with water, natural, or commercial Brassica oleraceae juices (kale), lutein (LT), beta-carotene (BC), methyl methanesulfonate (MS) or cyclophosphamide (CP).

According to the tested analysis, treatment with kale leaf juices alone did not exert marked genotoxic or clastogenic effects.

MMS or CP demonstration a strong DNA damage which was inhibited by the injection of kale juice.

Kale juices or carotenoids inhibited DNA damage induced by MMS or CP administered either pre- or posttreatment by 50 and 20%, respectively.

Additional differentiation also revealed that the most pronounced antigenotoxic activity were groups received juices, rather than carotenoids.

Based on the evidence, researchers said, "the synergy among constituents present in the food matrix may be more beneficial than the action of single compounds".

Taken altogether, kale juice may be considered a functional food for the prevention of cancer induced by genotoxins, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids Reduce the Risk Breast Cancer

By Kyle J. Norton

The woman breast is made up of specialized tissue that produces milk (glandular tissue) and fatty tissue. The size of the women's breasts is totally determined by the amount of fat.

Cancer is a class of diseases in which a group of cells growing and multiplying disorderly and uncontrollably in our body.

Breast cancer (malignant breast neoplasm) is a medical and chronic condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the breast tissue.

Most cases of breast cancer start either in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of milk ducts (Ductal carcinoma) or the lobules (Lobular carcinoma) that supply the ducts with milk.

There are also rare cases of breast cancer that start in other areas of the breast

The cause of breast cancer is the result of the alternation of DNA of the cells in the breast.

According to statistics, in 2010, over 250,000 new cases of breast cancer were expected to be diagnosed in women in the US alone and the risk of getting invasive breast cancer during the lifetime of a woman is 1/8.

The 5 years of the survival rate of localized breast cancer are closed to 100%.

Genetic preposition, one of the prevalent risk factor associated with the increased risk of breast cancer has been under intensifying study in scientists over the world over a few decades ago, suggested that women who carry the mutated genes BRCA1 and 2 have 60% most likely risk to develop breast cancer before the age of 70.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of cancer, researchers examined the increasing EPA and DHA relative to arachidonic acid effects on the risk of breast cancer.

According to the result of the analysis, the application ratio showed a reduction in pro-inflammatory lipid derivatives, inhibition of nuclear factor-κB-induced cytokine production, and decreased growth factor receptor signaling cell differentiation and proliferation beginning in membrane lipid rafts.

Furthermore, EPA and DHA supplementation also help to prevent or alleviate common health issues such as cardiac and cognitive dysfunction and chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy after a breast cancer diagnosis.

Moreover, omega-3 fatty acids also reduce the chemotherapy-associated loss of muscle mass and weight gain.

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids may be considered a functional food for the prevention of breast cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Cramp Bark (Viburnum opulus) Exerts Cytoprotective Effects Against Colorectal Cancer in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a group of medical and chronic diseases characterized by cell growth disorderly and uncontrollably in the tissue of specific organs in the body.

Over time, the alternative cells induced tumor may become progressively worse and damage other healthy tissues, depending on the grade of the tumor.

At the later stage, the most invasive tumor can induce secondary metastasis by spreading to other organs in the body via lymph or blood.

According to the National Cancer Institute, approximately 38.4% of men and women will be diagnosed with cancer at some points during their lifetimes, according to the data from 2013–2015.

In 2017, an estimated 15,270 children and adolescents ages 0 to 19 were diagnosed with cancer and 1,790 died of the disease.

The cancer cytotoxicity is an activity to cause the destruction of cancer cells by causing cancer cell apoptosis

Cytotoxic activity is a process to induce toxic to cells.

Cramp Bark is an ornamental plant, genus Viburnum, belonging to the family Adoxaceae, native to Europe and Asia. It has been used in traditional and herbal medicine as anti-spasmodic, anti-inflammatory, nervine. hypotensive agent and to treat menstrual cramps and pain, afterbirth, postpartum pains, excessive blood loss in periods, bleeding associated with the menopause, etc.

On finding a potential herbal medicine for the prevention and treatment of cancer, researchers examined the effects of Cramp Bark(Viburnum opulus) extract cytoprotective activity on Caco-2 cell, the continuous line of heterogeneous human epithelial colorectal adenocarcinoma cells.

According to the tested analysis, the extract showed a strong anti-tumor property in modulating the cellular membrane dynamic in the progression of the cancer cells.

Furthermore, the application exerted a strong chemo-preventive activity against oxidative stress-induced chemically by tert-butyl hydroperoxide (t-BOOH).

Moreover, the antioxidants activity of the extract also inhibits DNA damage by initiating the  DNA self-repair after cell exposition to reactive oxygen species, methylnitronitrosoguanidine (MNNG) and H2O2.

Taken altogether, cramp bark(Viburnum opulus) may be considered a functional herb which processes cytoprotective activity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cruciferous Vegetables Reduce the Mortality Rate in Patients with Cardiovascular Diseases

By Kyle J. Norton

Cardiovascular disease is a group of conditions triggered by the abnormal function of the heart and blood vessels abnormality.

The 3 most common forms of cardiovascular disease in North America are coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, and carotid artery disease caused by plaques build-up of plaque in the arteries that supply blood to the heart, the arms and legs, and the brain, respectively.

What causes plaques building up in the wall of the arteries is debatable.

Researchers do not why people who have the same health conditions, family history, and diet pattern, are susceptible to the early onset of cardiovascular disease while others do not.

According to the John Hopkins statistics, approximately 84 million people in the US suffer from some form of cardiovascular disease, causing about 2,200 deaths a day, averaging one death every 40 seconds.

Sadly to know that almost one out of every three deaths results from cardiovascular disease.

Epidemiologically, certain risk factors are found to associate with the onset of the condition, including lack of exercise, diabetes, use of tobacco, gender, genetic preposition, and excessive alcohol drinking.

One of the most common and preventable risk factors has been under the intensified debate in the scientist community. If a poor diet pattern and lifestyle can facilitate the onset of the disease, then a healthy diet choice and lifestyle with moderate exercise should provide a strong effect in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease.

In other words, by replacing the Western diet characterized by higher loads of processed meats, salty snacks, sweets, and soft drinks and a dietary risk factor for CVD with the traditional diet characterized by high in fruits and vegetables and less in red meat and processed foods, cardiovascular disease is preventable.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading disease to cause of death of 840,768 deaths (635,260 cardiac) in 2016 in the United States.

From 2006 to 2016, the US death rate from CVD decreased by 18.6% and from coronary heart disease by 31.8%.

Cruciferous vegetables are a group of vegetables, belongings to the family Brassicaceae (also called Cruciferae) with many genera, species, and cultivated all over the world in suitable climate for commercial profits, including cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and green leafy vegetables.

On finding a potential remedy for reducing the mortality rate of cardiovascular diseases, researchers compared the cruciferous vegetables, noncruciferous vegetables, total vegetables, and total fruit intake with risk of all-cause and cause-specific mortality.

The study included a total of 134,796 Chinese adults who participated in 2 population-based, prospective cohort studies in the Shanghai Women's Health Study and the Shanghai Men's Health Study.

According to the validated food-frequency questionnaires.returned from the participants,
* Over the time of the study, 3442 deaths among women during a mean follow-up of 10.2 y and 1951 deaths among men during a mean follow-up of 4.6 y.

*Although fruit and vegetable intake was inversely associated with risk of total mortality in both women and men, and a dose-response pattern, cruciferous vegetable intake showed the most strong protective effects against mortality.

* The inverse associations of all fruits and vegetables intake primarily related only to cardiovascular disease mortality but not to cancer mortality.

Based on the results, researchers said, "Our findings support recommendations to increase consumption of vegetables, particularly cruciferous vegetables, and fruit to promote cardiovascular health and overall longevity".

Taken altogether, cruciferous vegetables may be considered functional remedies for the prevention of total and cardiovascular disease mortality, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Depression is a common and serious psychological illness, affecting the physical and mental functions of patients, including the ways patients feel, think and act.

Some patients with depression may feel sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed.

There are many causes associated with the onset of depression, including genetics, changes in hormone levels, certain medical conditions, stress, grief or difficult life circumstances that initiate the change of brain chemistry in inducing depressive syndrome.

The most common symptoms of depression include sadness, hopelessness, guilt, change of mood, loss of interest in friends, family, favorite activities, and sex.

Some patients with depression also experience cognitive symptoms of trouble concentrating, making decisions, remembering and thoughts of harming themselves.

People who act out of the ordinary, consist of undesirable behavior result in impairment in the individual's functioning are considered to have abnormal behavior.

Undesirable behavior or abnormal behavior has been found in many patients with chronic depression.

According to the statistics, over 30 million Americans suffer from depression and the amount is increasing at an alarming rate. Depression may be a mental health disorder that can affect the way you eat, sleep, and the way you feel about yourself.

Antidepressant is a type of conventional medicine used as a first-line treatment of depression.

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

On finding a herbal medicine for the treatment of depression and depressive symptoms, researchers examined the antidepressant effects of PAPZ (Panax ginseng, Angelica Sinensis, Polygala tenuifolia Willd, and Ziziphi spinose Semen) on corticosterone (CORT) model of depression in mice.

According to the experimental results, the administration of PAPZ ameliorated depression-like phenotypes in the CORT model.

Furthermore, chronic PAPZ administration exhibited the protein expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the hippocampal tissue of the depressive mice.

Moreover, levels of the antioxidant enzyme activity of superoxide dismutase were enhanced compared to the decrease of the levels of stress marker malondialdehyde levels in the hippocampal tissue.

Based on the evidence, researchers said, "PAPZ has therapeutic effects in a mice depression model through increasing protein expression of BDNF and improving the anti-oxidation ability of the brain".

Taken altogether, Herbal Angelica processes anti-depressant activity, pending to larger sample size and multicenter human study.

The Dandelion(Taraxacum officinale) Effects on Symptoms of Lung Cancer

By Kyle J. Norton

The lung is a vital organ of the human being, located near the backbone on either side of the heart with functions of inhaling oxygen from the air then transporting them to the bloodstream to nourish the body cells' need and exhaling carbon dioxide from the bloodstream.

Lung cancer is a chronic and medical condition characterized by abnormal growth of the cells in the lung's tissue.

The most common form of primary lung cancers is derived from epithelial cells.

At the advanced stage, the lung cancer cell may suppress the nearby blood vessels and nerves leading to vomiting blood and localized severe pain accompanied by other general symptoms of cancer such as weight loss, reduce appetite.

In this stage, lung cancer also can travel a distance away to infect other healthy cells of tissues and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.

The most common glands and organs of lung cancer metastases are the adrenal gland, bones, brain, and liver.

The exact cause of lung cancer is not identified. However, epidemiologically, smoking, second smoke, exposure to certain chemicals, family history, people who have lung disease and excessive drinking are some prevalent factors associated with lung cancer developing.

Smoking although it is a major cause of lung cancer, however, not all lung cancer patients with lung cancer are smokers. Nonsmokers' lung cancer may be caused by exposure to radon, secondhand smoke, air pollution, or other factors.

In Canada, according to the statistics, lung cancer is the leading cause of death in both men and women. Lung cancer accounts for 26.7% of all deaths from cancer and 6.5% of all mortality.

The 5-year survival rate for people with stage IB NSCLC is about 68%.

Dandelion is a herbaceous perennial plant, genus Taraxacum, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to temperate regions of the world.
The herb has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat gout, eczema, acne, gall bladder, kidney, liver and urinary disorders, hypoglycemia, dyspepsia with constipation, edema, blood pressure, and heart weakness, chronic joint, skin diseases, etc.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of lung diseases, scientists examined the effect of Taraxacum Officinale and Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata lung cancer mice.

Selected mice induced lung cancer by intraperitoneally injected with urethane twice a week for consecutively five weeks, before receiving treatment of Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata and Taraxaci Herba.

According to the tested differentiation, mice induced cancer exerted symptoms of chill, lazy, hunched, with a reduction in temperature, cyanosis in auricle and tail.

Furthermore, the energy metabolism and erythrocytic ATP enzymatic activity were also reduced, whereas their whole blood viscosity and erythrocytic aggregate index increased similar to those of lung cancer.

The dandelion application showed an effect on enhancing the above symptoms and signs but had no effect on tumor progression.

In other words, the dandelion extract has potent inhibitory activity against HIV-1 replication and reverse transcriptase activity to induce infection.

Taken altogether, Dandelion may be considered a remedy for the treatment of lung cancer symptoms, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Turmeric Promotes Vascular Endothelial Function Against the Risk of Cardiovascular Diseases (CVD)

By Kyle J. Norton

Vasoprotection is the process to improve the function of the blood vessels, including the use of the herbal and natural remedy.

Blood vessels are the tubular structure including a vein, artery, or capillary which carries the blood through the tissues and organs pumped by the heart.

Vascular endothelial dysfunction is a condition characterized by the damage of the vascular endothelium, the thin layer of cells that lines blood vessels, a leading cause of cardiovascular diseases (CVD).

In other words, the vascular endothelium dysfunction reduced the function of targeting free radicals that lead to the onset of oxidative stress.

The most common risk factors associated with vascular endothelium dysfunction are impaired vasodilation, deficiency of nitric oxide, and inflammation, and thrombosis.

Conventionally, treatments of vascular endothelial dysfunction are totally depending on the causes of the disease. Early detection has been found to play a critical role to recover endothelial function.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

In the urgency to discover a natural ingredient for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, researchers examined the effects of curcumin ingestion and exercise training to improve vascular endothelial function in postmenopausal women.

The study included a total of 32 postmenopausal women who were assigned to 3 groups: control, exercise group with moderate aerobic exercise training for 8 weeks, and curcumin groups with curcumin orally administration for 8 weeks.

Based on the tested analysis, the flow-mediated dilation showed no difference before and after each intervention with flow-mediated dilation or other key dependent variables that were detected among the groups

However, curcumin and exercise groups showed a strong improvement of the flow-mediated dilation compared to no changes in the control group.

In other words, curcumin ingestion and aerobic exercise training can increase flow-mediated dilation in postmenopausal women.

Based on the findings, researchers suggested that both can potentially improve the age-related decline in endothelial function.

Taken altogether, turmeric processed a high amount of bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases by improving the vascular endothelium functions, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
