Turmeric Protects the Heart Against Cardiac Hypertrophy

By Kyle J. Norton

Cardiomyocyte hypertrophy is a medical condition characterized by the thickening of the heart muscle, leading to reduced function of the heart in pumping blood throughout the body.

The heart formed part of the circulatory system is a muscular organ that pumps blood through the blood vessels of the body to provide oxygen and nutrients and removal of metabolic wastes.
The heart muscles made up the bulk of the heart’s mass control the heartbeat with high contractile strength and endurance.

Cardiac muscle also has a unique function to regulate heart performance by spreading electrochemical signals to all cells in the heart.

Damage of heart muscle has been found to induce blood vessel diseases, such as coronary artery disease; heart rhythm problems (arrhythmias).

In some cases, heart muscle disease also is found in patients with congenital heart defects.

Most common symptoms of cardiac hypertrophy are breathlessness with exertion or at rest, legs, ankles, and feet swelling. persistent fatigue, dizziness, lightheadedness, and fainting, particularly, in the symptoms of irregular heartbeats.

Conventionally, treatments of cardiac hypertrophy are totally depending on the types of heart disease, including lowering blood pressure medication such as ACE inhibitors; lowing the heart rate, such as beta-blockers, normalizing heart beating and balancing electrolytes in the body.

Making a healthy lifestyle change and moderate exercise may also recommend by your doctor.

Cardiac hypertrophy has been found in patients with uncontrol high blood pressure accompanied by tobacco smoking. The condition is a common risk factor of heart attack and stroke.

Dr. Thomas Kahan, the lead scientist wrote, "Myocardial hypertrophy is also part of the remodeling process following an acute myocardial infarction, and is a common finding in patients with congestive heart failure caused by systolic and/or diastolic LV dysfunction".

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belongings to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On findings a potential compound for the treatment of heart failure, researchers examined the efficacy of curcumin an anti-hypertrophic potential.

According to the tested analysis, curcumin encapsulated by carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC) nanoparticle conjugated to a myocyte specific homing peptide was effective in the regression of cardiac hypertrophy in a rat (Rattus norvegicus) model.

Curcumin at a low dose of 5 mg/kg body weight compared to free Curcumin at 35 mg/kg body weight. showed a higher cardiac bioavailability, comapred to other concentration.

Furthermore, cardiac function during hypertrophy was significantly improved by the application of Curcumin/CMC-peptide by inhibiting the hypertrophy marker genes (ANF, β-MHC) and apoptotic mediators (Bax, Cytochrome-c) and activity of apoptotic markers (Caspase 3 and PARP) in the lower doses comapred to higher doses.

Targeted Curcumin treatment significantly lowered p53 expression which is associated with pro-apoptotic function in cardiac hypertrophy.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "Curcumin and also attributes towards probable mechanistic insight into its therapeutic potential as a cardio-protective agent for regression of cardiac hypertrophy".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of cardiac hypertrophy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Ashwagandha Protects the Kidneys Against Acute Toxicity

By Kyle J. Norton

Kidneys, a pair of the bean-shaped organ in the human body only filter out blood but also balances the body fluids by eliminating them and remove them through urinary secretion.

Renal protection is a strategy that protect the kidney against injury or damage. In other words, renal protection is a process that maintains the function of the kidneys.

Kidney disease is a medical condition that causes the reduced function of the kidney due to damage.

In other words, the progression of kidney damage may affect the function of the kidney to filter blood
against toxins.

Most patients with chronic kidney disease also found to have conditions of diabetes or high blood pressure.

Depending on the severity of renal damage, patients may experience symptoms of decreased urine output, fluid retention, that lead to swelling in the legs, ankles or feet, fatigue, nausea, and physical weakness

In severe cases, patients may also have symptoms of shortness of breath, confusion, and irregular heartbeat.

The worse cases of kidney damage can lead to renal failure, a condition that induces wastes and toxins accumulated in the blood. In this stage, dialysis and kidney transplant are the only options.

Kidney damage can be classified into 4 different stages
* Stage 1 with normal or high GFR (GFR > 90 mL/min). In this stage of kidney patients are assymptomatic.

* Stage 2 Mild CKD (GFR = 60-89 mL/min), Patients in this stage also experience no symptoms.

*Stage 3A Moderate CKD (GFR = 45-59 mL/min) and 3B moderate CKD (GFR = 30-44 mL/min.
Most patients are assymptomatic. However, some patients may experience symptoms of mild swelling in the hands and feet, back pain and urinating more or less than normal.

* Stage 4 CKD (GFR = 15-30 mL/min). Most patients in this stage experience more severe symptoms of swelling in the hands and feet, back pain and urinating more or less than normal, accompanied by other health problem associated with weakened kidney function

* Stage 5 EndStage CKD (GFR <15 mL/min). Patients at this advanced stage are very close to renal failure or renal failure. Symptoms are getting worse.

Where eGFR is short for estimated glomerular filtration rate.

Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

On finding a potent compound for the treatment of kidney disease, researchers examined the effects of Withania somnifera on rats-induced nephrotoxicity.

The study included selected rat oral administrated by The root extract of three different doses of W. somnifera (viz., 250, 500, and 750 mg/kg) for 14 days before GEN treatment and thereafter concurrently with GEN (100 mg/kg) for 8 days.

Based on the tested differentiation, GEN treatment group showed significant nephrotoxicity associated with kidney injury by an increase in kidney weight, urea, creatinine, urinary protein, and glucose, and a significant reduction in body weights and potassium by enhancing the overexpression of free radicals.

Compared to somnifera doses of W. somnifera at 250 and 750 mg/kg, the administration of 500 mg/kg showed the strongest effect in reversing the aforementioned changed observed by the microscopically antioxidant evidence.

In other words, W. somnifera protected the kidney against acute toxicity in a dose-dependent manner.

However, there were no significant changes in the levels of sodium in the experimental animals compared to control.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "nephroprotective effect of Withania somnifera, which could be by enhancing antioxidant activity with natural antioxidants and scavenging the free radicals".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of periodontitis, pending to the result of larger sample size and multicenter study

Cranberry Improves Metabolic Profile of Obesity in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

A metabolic profile is a tool to diagnose metabolic disease.

A metabolic disease is a group of medical conditions that disrupt normal cell metabolism in converting food to energy.

Most common causes of metabolic disease are genetic prepositions. However, people with the mutated gene remain healthy for years.

Interestingly, cellular stress and family history have been found to be a major cause of the initiation of the symptoms of metabolic disease, epidemiologically.

As of today, there is no effective treatment of metabolic disease. Some children with the metabolic disease diagnosed at the early age may respond very well. However, many do not respond well to therapy and cause severe problems, despite the early diagnosis.

Dr. Ingraham RH, the lead scientist at the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine wrote, "Except in cases of gross mismanagement, these profiles do not offer a "quick fix." In many of the reported cases in which diagnosis of herd problems was attributed to the metabolic profile, the clinician should have been able to identify the problem before the profile was conducted".

According to statistics, the metabolic disease is uncommon in the US.  Metabolic disorders affect approximately 1 in 1,000 individuals.

People who are overweight and obesity and physical inactivity and have a condition of insulin resistance are most likely to have metabolic disease developing.

According to the statistics, among US adults aged 18 years or older, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome rose by more than 35%. From 1988–1994 to 2007–2012, the condition increased from 25.3% to 34.2%.

Out of many risk factors associated with the onset of metabolic syndrome, some researchers suggested the promotion of the Western diet over the past few decades may be the major culprit in inducing the rise of the metabolic syndrome, globally.

Hypertension is a condition of abnormally high blood pressure in the bloodstream. Hypertension a member of the cluster conditions of metabolic syndrome associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood.

According to the statistics provided by the American Heart Association, approximately, 103 million U.S. adults have high blood pressure, or 1 in 2 adults in the US have the syndrome.

Obesity is a medical and chronic condition caused by long-term excessive body fat accumulated. Overweight is a condition of excess body weight relative to height.

According to the Body Mass Index(BMI), people who have a BMI between 25 to 29.9 are considered overweight and a BMI of over 30 is an indication of obesity.

The formula of the BMI indexBMI= weight (kg)/ height (m2)

According to the statistic, 68% of the American population is either overweight or obese. However,
in 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults, 18 years and older, were overweight, inclduing over 650 million were obese worldwide.

Dr. Shu-Zhong Jiang, the lead scientist wrote in the examination of the metabolic profile of obese wrote, "There are currently over 1.9 billion people who are obese or overweight, leading to a rise in related health complications, including insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, liver disease, cancer, and neurodegeneration".

And, "The finding that obesity and metabolic disorder are accompanied by chronic low-grade inflammation has fundamentally changed our view of the underlying causes and progression of obesity and metabolic syndrome".

The results strongly suggested that obese subjects are at an increased risk of metabolic disease.

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia, researchers examined the effect of cranberry extract (CE) on the improvement of lipid dysfunction in HFD-induced obesity in an animal model.

The study included postnatal day 120 (PN120), male Wistar rats assigned into two groups: (1) SD (n = 36) fed with a standard diet and (2) HFD (n = 36), fed with a diet containing 44.5% (35.2% from lard) energy from fat.

According to the results from rats 12 animals from SD and HFD groups were killed at at At PN150 and others subdivided into four groups (n = 12/group): animals that received 200 mg/kg cranberry extract (SD CE, HFD CE) gavage/daily/30 days or water (SD, HFD) killed at PN180, HFD group showed higher body mass and visceral fat, cholesterol and triglyceride contents.

Furthermore, the HFD group demonstrated a significantly higher lipid peroxidation in plasma and tissues and higher protein carbonylation in the liver and adipose tissue compared to the SD group.

Application of CE not only inhibited the aforementioned parameters induced by a high-fat diet but also protected the liver tissues against by lowering lipid peroxidation and protein carbonylation and accumulation of liver fat without completely reversing the adiposity.

Based on the findings, researchers aid, "cranberry extract improved the metabolic profile and reduced oxidative damage and steatosis in HFD-fed rats, which suggests that it can help manage obesity-related disorders".

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the improvement of the metabolic profile of obesity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Rapeseed Oil Inhibits The Clusters Associated with Metabolic Syndrome

By Kyle J. Norton

A dietary pattern is the measurement of the quantity, variety, or combination of different foods and beverages in a diet as well as the frequency of the foods are habitually consumed.

Most common dietary patterns are
* The traditional diet, Wikipedia wrote, "Traditional foods are foods and dishes that are passed through generations or which have been consumed many generations. Traditional foods and dishes are traditional in nature, and may have a historic precedent in a national dish, regional cuisine or local cuisine".

* The Western diet is a standard American diet (SAD) associated with high intakes of red meat, processed meat, pre-packaged and refined foods, fried foods, high-fat dairy products, high salt, and sugar.foods.

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions associated with the increased risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

The health problems found in the group include too much fat around the waist, elevated blood pressure, high triglycerides, elevated blood sugar, and low HDL cholesterol.

In other words, if you have 3 of the conditions in the group, your risk of CVD and diabetes are increased substantially compared to those who have less.

According to the statistics, approximately 30% of people in the US are living with metabolic syndrome.

Believe it or not, among US adults aged 18 years or older, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome rose by more than 35% from 1988–1994 to 2007–2012, increasing from 25.3% to 34.2%.

Rapeseed, also known as rape, oilseed rape, is a member of the family Brassicaceae (mustard or cabbage family), cultivated in the suitable climate regions for its oil-rich seed for commercial profits.

On finding a potential compound for the prevention of heart disease, researchers at the University of Applied Sciences investigated the effects of a hypo energetic diet with low energy density (ED) enriched in rapeseed oil derived n-3 fatty acid α-linolenic acid (ALA), in patients with metabolic syndrome.

The human trial included eighty-one patients with metabolic syndrome randomly assigned to received either rapeseed oil derived high MUFA content and an ALA intake of 3.5 g/d on body weight or olive oil diet rich in MUFA, but with a low ALA content.

According to the results, after a 6-month dietary intervention, the rapeseed oil and olive oil groups showed a significant in reduced body weight and metabolic factors associated with cardiovascular risk.

In other words, intervention groups with rapeseed oil not only significant decrease the systolic blood pressure, but also reduces total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol, and insulin levels in patients with metabolic syndrome.

More interestingly, serum triglycerides (TAG) associated with cardiovascular and nonfatty liver disease risk factors were significantly reduced only in the high ALA intake, comapred to no effect on the low ALA group.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "our dietary food pattern with a low ED and high intakes of MUFA and ALA may be a practical approach for long-term dietary treatment in patients with the metabolic syndrome".

Taken altogether,  rapeseed oil may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of metabolic syndrome, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cruciferous Veggies Protects the Liver Against Acute Injury

By Kyle J. Norton

Human toxicity is a general term refers to any substance which causes harm to human health if inhaled, ingested or absorbed through the skin.

Liver toxicity is a process that causes liver damage by reducing the function of the liver.

Liver oxidative stress caused by a toxic substance such as an overdose of the supplement has been found to constitute most cases of acute liver damage.

The liver is the largest internal organ that not only filters the blood from the digestive system before passing them to other parts of the body but also plays a critical role in the production cholesterol, a waxy substance which aids digestion, builds cell membranes and produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.

Liver stress is a condition in which the function of the liver is partly reduced. Hepatic stress can be observed by the levels of liver stress-makers, including transaminases aspartate transaminase (AST) and alanine transaminase (ALT).

Abnormal high levels of transaminases aspartate transaminase (AST) and alanine transaminase (ALT) are early indications of liver damage or injury.

Epidemiologically, drugs that induce liver injury are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), anti-infective drugs (anti-tubercular drugs), anti-cancer drugs, hormonal drugs, immunosuppressive agents, sedative and neuropsychiatric drugs.

Acetaminophen according to study is the most form of medication that implicates drug-induced liver injury

However,  antibiotics are another class of drugs  that cause liver toxicity most commonly

On finding a potent veggie against drug-induced hepatotoxicity, researchers examined the sulforaphane (SFN), a thiol compound found in wide abundance in cruciferous plants against acute liver injury.

On VPA-induced liver injury in rats for 7 days, that causes significant biochemical alterations and hepatic histopathological damage, SFN (0.5 mg/kg, orally) for 7 days showed a significant protective effect against liver injury observed by the liver function biomarkers.

More precisely, levels of liver stress markers such as alanine transaminase, aspartate aminotransferase, and alkaline phosphatase were strongly reduced by the administration of SFN.

According to the tested analysis, SFN not only restored serum albumin concentration in a significant manner but also SFN significantly mitigated VPA-induced histopathological alterations.

The efficacy of SFN against liver toxicity was attributed to several mechanisms including inhibition of malondialdehyde and tumor necrosis factor α content associated with oxidative stress and the increase of concomitant increase in hepatic heme oxygenase-1 content and glutathione concentration involved in the antioxidant expression.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, "SFN can significantly ameliorate VPA-induced hepatotoxicity and liver injury primarily by a direct association between antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties".

Taken altogether, cruciferous plants may be considered supplements for the prevention of acute liver injury, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Antioxidant Indicaxanthin Inhibits Hypercholesterolemia and Hypercholesterolemic Complications

By Kyle J. Norton

Hypercholesterolemia is a condition characterized by abnormally high levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream.

In other words, the condition is caused by either overexpression of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or low levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL).

Cholesterol, a waxy substance produced by the liver or the dietary in moderate amount source plays a critical to aid digestive function in absorbing nutrients, build strong cell membranes, produce steroid hormones and vitamin D. However, excessive amounts in the blood have been found to induce plaque built-up on the arterial wall, leading to heart disease and stroke.

Similar to high blood pressure, people with hypercholesterolemia are asymptomatic. Patients with familial hypercholesterol may experience symptoms of chest pain with activity. xanthomas, and cholesterol deposits around the eyelids.

Most common complications associated with uncontrolled hypercholesterolemia are carotid artery disease, coronary heart disease, including angina or heart attack, peripheral artery disease, and stroke.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, hypercholesterolemia is a major risk factor of heart disease, a leading cause of death in the US. In the US, approximately, 71 million American adults (33.5%) have high low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or “bad,” cholesterol, and only 1 out of every 3 adults with high LDL cholesterol has the condition under control.

Sadly, only 50% of people hypercholesterolemia are getting treatment.

Out of many risk factors associated with the risk of hypercholesterolemia, some researchers suggested that widespread obesity due to aging may have a strong impact on the increased incidence in the US.

Dr. Parini P, the lead scientist wrote, "Plasma cholesterol levels increase with age, as does the incidence of coronary heart disease" and "the relative deficiency in growth hormone (GH), which occurs with aging, contributes to the development of the age-related hypercholesterolemia, because GH has beneficial effects on cholesterol metabolism".

However, researchers continued, "Growth hormone (GH), treatment strongly reduced the hypercholesterolemia in 18-month-old animals. We conclude that the age-dependent increase of plasma cholesterol in rats can be reversed by the administration of GH, presumably through the pleiotropic effects of this hormone on lipoprotein metabolism".

In other words, aging in the promotion of hypercholesterolemia induced complications can be preventable by the regulation of lipoprotein metabolism.

Indicaxanthin is phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of Betacyanins, belongings to the group of Betalains found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.

On finding a potential compound for the improvement of cholesterol file, researchers examined the effect of Indicaxanthin effects on toxic oxysterols in hypercholesterolemia.

Where toxic oxysterols in hypercholesterolemia have been found to cause suicidal death of human erythrocytes or eryptosis associated with red blood cell programmed death.

According to the tested differentiation, indicaxanthin (Ind) from cactus pear fruit, incubated with isolated healthy human erythrocytes exposed to an oxysterol mixture for 48 h in a concentration range (1.0-5.0 μM) prevents membrane phosphatidylserine (PS) externalization and cell shrinkage in a dose-dependent manner.

In other words, indicaxanthin (Ind) protect the PS that regulates the production of thrombin, the central regulatory molecule of blood coagulation caused by overexpression of ROS and depletion of antioxidant enzymes and production of inflammatory cytokine-induced by an oxysterol mixture without affecting the erythrocyte redox environment or other parameters.

In ex vivo, indicaxanthin (Ind) at 5 μm, induced the spiking levels of normal human blood with the oxysterol mixture for 48 h induced eryptosis, by reducing the production of ROS and decreased levels of GSH.

Furthermore, eryptosis, the suicidal erythrocyte death, leads to cell shrinkage and cell membrane scrambling and red blood cell programmed death to cause vascular tissue injury was inhibited by 5 μm-Ind.

These results suggested that eryptotic erythrocytes that contribute to thrombotic complications in hypercholesterolemia were prevented by the application of indicaxanthin.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "the positive effects of diets containing Ind on erythrocytes in hypercholesterolaemic subjects".

Taken altogether, indicaxanthin may be considered a remedy for the prevention of hypercholesterolemia complications, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara) Protects the Cells Against Cytotoxicity Induced by ROS

By Kyle J. Norton

Oxidative stress is a  condition associated with the long-term imbalanced ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body, leading to protein, lipid, and cell damage that causes chronic illness such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

In other words, the condition is caused either by overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host or both.

Antioxidants are either produced by the body or injected into the body from outside sources such as the consumptions of antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables.

Free radicals are everywhere, including the air we breathe, the food we eat and the body daily functioning such as cell metabolism.

More precisely, any chemical compound which has an oxygen molecule can become free radical after entering our body.

In healthy individuals, the antioxidant produced by the host is more than enough to counter the bombards of free radicals. However, people with a weakened immune system such as elderly and immature immune system such as the baby may need the injection of antioxidants from outside sources.

Particularly, people with a suppressive immune system due to chemotherapy may require to intake large amounts from antioxidant-rich food regularly.

However, free radicals in moderate amount are needed for body functioning, including lower blood pressure, relax blood vessels to move blood, such as nitric oxide NO.

Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara) is a perennial herbaceous plant, genus Tussilago, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia. The herb has been used over thousands of years to treat asthma, various coughs, bronchial congestion, respiratory disorders, headaches and obstruction in the nasal passage, etc.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of disease associated with oxidative stress, researchers examined the cytoprotective compound, 1-[(4S)-3,4-dihydro-4-hydroxy-2,2-dimethyl-2H-1-benzopyran-6-yl]-ethanone (1) isolated from the flower buds of Tussilago farfara L.

According to the tested analysis on (1) and other isolated compounds such as 3,4-dicaffeoyl isoquinic acid (2), trans-cinnamic acid (3), 4-hydroxyacetophenone (4), 4,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid methyl ester (5), 3,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid methyl ester (6), 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (7), isoquercetrin (8), and ligucyperonol (9), compounds 1 and 3 showed significant cytoprotective activities against glucose oxidase-induced oxidative stress in mouse fibroblast NIH3T3 cells and human keratinocyte HaCaT cells comapred others.

Furthermore, the MTT assay and lactate dehydrogenase leakage differentiation also supported the possibility of compounds 1 and 3 as the potent cytoprotective agents against overexpression of ROS.

Taken altogether, coltsfoot may be considered a remedy for the treatment of disease associated with oxidative stress-induced cytotoxicity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
