Herbal Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara) Promotes Skin Health

By Kyle J. Norton

Skin, a large external organ in the human body is the outer layer, with a total area of about 20 square feet which protect the internal organs, bones, and tissues against damage.

The skin processes 3 main layers
* Epidermis is the outer most layer of the skin providing a barrier against infection from environmental pathogens. The outer layers also regulate the amount of water released from the body through transepidermal water loss.

* Dermis is the second layer of skin, containing blood capillaries, nerve endings, sweat glands, hair follicles, and other structures.

* The bottom layer is the subcutaneous fat which has been found to process the protective effect against the dangers of visceral fat.

Skin inflammation is a condition that occurs when your immune system responds to a stimulus or trigger inflammation on the skin.
Inflammation is a natural process of the immune system which tries to protect our body against the invasion of stimuli and pathogens.

This process has been found to involve several stages after the bodily injury caused by physical impact or internal damage.

In the acute phase of infection, the white blood cells of the first line of immune defense stimulate to the production of blood coagulation to cover the wound and activate the protein associated with the production of inflammatory cytokines to kill off the invaders before they can enter the body.

However, overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines can lead to damage and death of the healthy cells, causing the irreversible scars as in liver hepatitis infection.

Chronic inflammation (CI) is a result in which the immune system can not destroy the invasive pathogens in the acute phase of infection within 3- 8 weeks, leading to the immune adaptation of the new change in facilitating low-grade inflammatory diseases, including arthritis and diabetes.

Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara) is a perennial herbaceous plant, genus Tussilago, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia. The herb has been used over thousands of year to treat asthma, various coughs, bronchial congestion, respiratory disorders, headaches and obstruction in the nasal passage, etc.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of skin disease, researchers examined the effect of tussilagonone (TGN), a sesquiterpene compound isolated from T. farfara anti-inflammatory activity.

In RAW 264.7 cells, based on the tested analysis, administration of TGN enhanced the HO-1 expression associated with reducing inflammatory stress, oxidative stress, and ER stress and nuclear factor-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), associated with the antioxidant defense in a time- and dose-dependent manner.

Futhermore, TGN also suppressed the proteins associated with the production of proinflammatory cytokines such as nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) by reducing the mRNA expression of proinflammatory cytokines.

In vivo, TGN also reduced iNOS and COX-2 expression in a mouse model skin inflammation induced by the injection of  12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA).

Based on the findings, researchers said, " these findings suggest an important role for TGN-induced HO-1 activation in regulating inflammatory responses.".

Taken altogether, coltsfoot may be considered a remedy for the improvement of skin condition caused by inflammation, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Ashwagandha, the Natural Depressant

By Kyle J. Norton

Chronic stress is the response to emotional pressure in demanding situations over a period of time, leading to the release of hormone cortisol and adrenaline.

Most common factors associated with stress incidence include psychological pressures, such as work deadlines, and exams, high-pressure jobs, and financial difficulties.

Overtime unresolved chronic stress can cause a wide range of symptoms and increase the risk of depression.

Depression is a common and serious psychological illness, affecting physical and mental functions of patients, including the patients feeling, thinking and acting.

Some patients with depression may feel sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed.

There is no exact cause of depression. Changes in hormone levels, medical conditions, stress, grief or difficult life circumstances that initiate the change of brain chemistry in inducing depressive syndrome are some of the most prevalent factors found in patients with depression.

Most common symptoms of depression include sadness, hopelessness, guilt, change of mood, loss of interest in friends, family, favorite activities, and sex.

In severe case, some patients with depression also experience cognitive symptoms of trouble concentrating, making decisions, remembering and thoughts of harming his or herself.

According to the statistics provided by the Anxiety and Depression of Association of American, major depressive disorder is the leading cause of disability in the U.S. for ages 15 to 44.3, affecting more than 16.1 million American adults, or about 6.7% of the U.S. population age 18 and older.

Conventionally, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) is the primary medication for the treatment of depression due to its relatively lower side effects comapred to depressants. Other types of antidepression medication may include serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), typical antidepressants and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).

On finding a potent compound for the treatment of depression, , researchers examined the effects of extracts of Withania somnifera (WSE)as an adjunctive treatment in patients with schizophrenia experiencing an exacerbation of positive symptoms.

The randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind 12-week study included patients with schizophrenia received 1,000 mg of standardized WSE. conducted by the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Based on the 66 patients with depression symptoms, the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale. showed the WSE exerted medium effect sizes of 0.683 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.16 to 1.21) comapred to placebo.

More importantly, the adverse effects were mild and transient, according to patient reports.

Collectively, researchers wrote after taking other factors into account, "WSE may hold promise in the treatment of depression... symptoms in schizophrenia".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the prevention of depressive symptoms in patients with schizophrenia, pending to the result of larger sample size and multicenter study

Lycopene Promotes Kidney Against Renal Disease

By Kyle J. Norton

Kidneys, a pair of the bean-shaped organ in the human body not only filters out blood but also balances the body fluids by eliminating them and removes them through urinary secretion.

Additionally, kidney accompanied by the liver and skin form also detox the toxins in the body.

Kidney disease is a medical condition associated with gradually reduced function of the kidney.

Renal protection is strategies that protect the kidney against injury or damage. In other words, renal protection is a process that maintains the function of the kidneys.

Depending on the severity of renal damage, patients may experience symptoms of decreased urine output, fluid retention, that lead to swelling in the legs, ankles or feet, fatigue, nausea, and physical weakness

In severe cases, patients may also have symptoms of shortness of breath, confusion, and irregular heartbeat.

The worse cases of kidney damage can lead to renal failure, a condition that induces wastes and toxins accumulated in the blood. In this stage, dialysis and kidney transplant are the only options.

Believe it or not, most cases of kidney disease are found in the late stage. In other words, kidney disease can only be diagnosed, if your kidneys have less than 10% functioning capacity.

Most patients at the advanced stage of chronic kidney damage may experience more severe symptoms of swelling in the hands and feet, back pain and urinating more or less than normal, accompanied by other health problem associated with weakened kidney function

However, at the end-stage CKD with the GFR <15 mL/min,  patients are considered very close to renal failure or renal failure.

Where eGFR is short for estimated glomerular filtration rate.

Lycopene is a phytochemical found in tomato in the class of carotenoid, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and perform various functions in photosynthesis.

On finding a potent compound which processes kidney protective activity, researchers examined the effects of lycopene on kidney oxidative tissue damage.

According to the results in 2 pharmaceutical forms in methotrexate-induced kidney damage in rats, a single dose of methotrexate- showed a significant effect to induce severe functional and morphological alterations of kidneys observed by kidney cell skin peeling, tubular vacuolation, and focal necrosis.

Serum urea and creatinine increase associated with kidney damage and injury and reduced kidney tissue antioxidant enzymes were also found in the kidney in methotrexate-induced rats.

Application of both forms of lycopene concomitantly with methotrexate not only ameliorated changes in serum urea and creatinine and oxidative damage markers but also markedly reversed structural changes of kidney tissue.

In other words, lycopene protected the kidney tissue against oxidative stress-induced toxicity by increasing the levels of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host.

Interestingly, rats treated by lycopene in nanoliposome-encapsulated form showed a higher degree of recovery compared to those treated with free lycopene form.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "treatment with nanoliposome-encapsulated lycopene comparing to lycopene in the standard vehicle has an advantage as it more efficiently reduces methotrexate-induced kidney dysfunction".

Taken altogether, lycopene found in tomato may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of kidney disease, pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Healthy Food Onion the Anti Acute and Chronic Inflammatory Functional Food

By Kyle J. Norton

Inflammation is a natural defense of the body in which the immune system white blood cell on the first line of defense try to destroy stimuli and foreign pathogens which try to enter the body through the wound or injury.

More precisely, in the acute phase of infection, after receiving the message transmitted by the central nervous system, the immune macrophages stimulates the production of blood palette to cover the affected site and production of pro-inflammatory cytokines to protect the body against harmful microorganisms.

Some anti-inflammatory cytokines in this phase may also switch to proinflammatory activity, causing overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines.

Depending on the size and severity of the injury or damage, most cases of infection are ended in the acute phase. The wound is healed within a few days or weeks.

In other words, if the immune macrophages destroy all  foreign pathogens in the acute phase of infection, the inflammatory progress proceeds to other stages including the stage one of acute phase of infection followed by the repair and regeneration stage, where collagen fibers are formed then by the remodeling and maturation stage, where the new tissue continue to remodel, strengthen and improve.

However, in some cases, overexpression of pro-inflammatory cytokines may cause damage and death of healthy cells, leading to the formation of scars.

Most common symptoms of the acute phase of infection area pain, swelling and redness in the affected areas.

Chronic inflammation occurs when the immune system can not destroy all invaders within a set period, it will compromise, leading to chronic low-grade inflammation, the major cause of various chronic illness, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belongings to the family Alliaceae, a close relation of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.

Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild or sweet.

With an aim to find a natural compound that process anti-inflammatory activity researchers examined the epidemiological studies of onion and garlic on vitro and vivo.

Epidemiologically,

* Onion sulfur components inhibit cyclooxygenase (COX) the enzymes that promote inflammation, pain, and fever.

* Levels of lipoxygenase associated with pro-inflammatory effects was also inhibited by the onion sulfur components.

* Moreover,  mouse macrophages stimulated by lipopolysaccharide (LPS), onion sulfur components decreased the expression of the pro-inflammatory cytokines.

* Compared to several nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, ajoene found in onion also inhibited the release of PGE2 by blocking the activation of  COX-2 enzyme activity at a dose-dependent manner.

Taken altogether, onion may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of inflammation, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Bromelain, Protects the Skin Cell Against Cancer Developing

By Kyle J. Norton

Skin cancer is a medical condition caused by irregular cell growth in the skin due to the alternation of cell DNA.

Skin cancer is one most common type of cancer in the US. According to the statistics provided by the CDC, skin cancer affects 1 in 5 American and non-epithelial skin cancers represent 7% of skin cancers tracked by central cancer registries.

In 2012, more than 5.4 million cases of nonmelanoma skin cancer were diagnosed worldwide compared to only 3.3 million cases in the U.S.

The 5-year relative survival rate of basal cell carcinoma(BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is 95%.

Squamous cell carcinoma of the skin is one of the most common forms of squamous cells skin cancer developed in the middle and outer layer of the skin.

Although there are a number of conditions that can cause squamous cells skin cancer. However, in the US, the most squamous cell carcinomas of the skin are associated with a prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, either from sunlight or from tanning beds.

Dr. Faurschou A, the lead scientist said in vivo, "(although) the amount of UVB penetrating the epidermis and reaching the bulge cells is very low, which questions if these cells suffer sufficient DNA damage to transform into cancer stem cells".

And, "UV-induced SCC of mice originates from cells of the hair follicle, presumably the bulge stem cells, indicating that ultraviolet radiation penetrates epidermis sufficiently to cause irreversible DNA damage in cells located beneath the epidermis".

Most common symptoms of squamous cells skin cancer include firm, red nodule, flat sore with a scaly crust, a rough, scaly patch on your lip, a red sore or rough patch inside the mouth.

If you have experienced some skin symptoms that can not be healed in a short period of time, you may have squamous cells skin cancer. Please make sure that you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

Depending on the size of the skin tumor, the small size of the localized tumor can be completely removed with relatively minor surgery or occasionally with a topical medication.

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of squamous cell cancer, researchers examined the bromelain, obtained from pineapple, anti-cancer effects in vitro, against human epidermoid carcinoma-A431.

In vitro, administration of bromelain exhibited a reduction in proliferation of both these cell-lines and suppressed their potential from anchorage-independent growth, a hallmark of carcinogenesis.

Injection of bromelain also suppressed the proteins associated with the production of proinflammatory cascade closely allied to cancer developing.

Additionally, bromelain inhibited the proliferation of cells by inducing the depletion of intracellular glutathione and generation of reactive-oxygen-species followed by induced cell death by mitochondrial membrane depolarization.

Furthermore, bromelain induced cell death through the expression of proteins associated with cell death programming and pro-apoptosis observed by cell cycle arrest.

In other words, bromelain protects the integrity and viability of the squamous cell against the alternation of cell DNA against the onset of cancer.

Based on the finding, researchers said, "Bromelain afforded substantial anti-cancer potential in these settings; hence we suggest it as a potential prospect for anti-cancer agent besides only an additive in chemotherapy".

Taken altogether, bromelain may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of squamous cell skin cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of bromelain in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Healthy Food Cucumber' Cucurbitacin B Protects the Heart Against the Risk of Cardiac Hypertrophy

By Kyle J. Norton

Cardiac hypertrophy (CH)  is a medical condition characterized by the abnormal enlargement or thickening of the heart muscle, affecting the heart function in pumping blood.

Cardiac hypertrophy induced reduced blood flow to the body may cause symptoms of shortness of breath, chest pain, particularly during exercise.

In some serious cases, CH can disrupt the heart's electrical system, leading to life-threatening abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias).

The most common types of CH include
*Ventricular hypertrophy due to intense sports activities, particularly in people with intensive exercise

* Ventricular hypertrophy due to hypertension-induced ventricular pressure overload.
and
* Ventricular hypertrophy due to tricuspid regurgitation induced ventricular volume overload.

Although there are various causes associated with the onset of CH, the most common cause of CH is associated with plaque accumulated on the arterial wall resulting in a blockage that causes damage to the heart muscle.

Dr. Joa˜o Carlos Hueb, the lead scientist in the article "Association Between Atherosclerotic Aortic Plaques and Left Ventricular Hypertrophy in Patients With Cerebrovascular Events" wrote, "Almost half of the patients (43.1%) presented atherosclerotic lesions in the aorta. LVH was present in 90.0% of patients with a plaque and in only 30.3% of patients without plaque. Using high blood pressure as a covariate, the risk of patients with LVH presenting atherosclerotic plaque in the aorta was 18.23-fold greater than the risk for patients without LVH (95% CI, 5.68 to 58.54; P0.0001)"

And, "Adding age into the model, the risk increased to 26.36 (95% CI, 7.14 to 97.30; P0.0001). Conclusions—LVH detected by conventional echocardiogram is associated with a high risk of atherosclerotic plaque in the aorta and would be used as a criterion for an indication of transesophageal".

The cucumber plant is a species of Cucumis Sativus, belongings to the family Cucurbitaceae and native to Western Asia. It is a creeping vine with roots in the ground and grows up with the support of frames.

In the urgency to find a natural treatment that processes anti-cardiac hypertrophy associated with the prevalence of heart failure, researchers evaluated the anti-hypertrophy and anti-fibrosis potential of a natural plant triterpenoid, Cucurbitacin B in vivo.

The study included mice induced cardiac hypertrophy by aortic banding (AB) received cucurbitacin B treatment (Gavage, 0.2 mg/kg body weight/2 day) after 1 week of surgery.

Observation after 4 weeks of AB, cucurbitacin B (CuB) demonstrated a strong anti-hypertrophy and -fibrosis ability by decreasing heart weight, myocardial cell cross-sectional area, and interstitial fibrosis.

Furthermore, CuB also protected the heart by ameliorating systolic and diastolic abnormalities, normalized the gene expression of hypertrophic and fibrotic markers induced by aortic banding (AB).

Moreover, cucurbitacin B also showed significant hypertrophy inhibitory effect in phenylephrine that stimulates cardiac muscle cells.

The efficacy of CuB in the inhibition of abnormal enlargement, or thickening, of the heart muscle, was attributed to the increasing level of autophagy involved in the orderly degradation and recycling of cellular components by blocking signaling pathways associated with inhibited autophagy.

Taken altogether, cucumber processed a major compound cucurbitacin B (CuB) may be used for the treatment of cardiac hypertrophy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of CuB in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Turmeric Decreases Pro-Inflammatory Cytokines in Immune Response

By Kyle J. Norton

Anti-inflammatory activity is the process to reduce inflammation or swelling without affecting the function of the immune system.

In the acute phase of infection, the immune first line of defense, the white blood cells, macrophages stimulates the production of blood platelet to cover the wound or cut and proinflammatory cytokines to destroy all invaders.

Most cases of acute infection are stopped at this phase and the wound is healed itself quickly.

However, if the wound is too large, then the recovery may take a longer period and through 4 overlap recovery stages. Any interruption in the overlapped recover stage may cause the formation of scars.

Moreover, overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines that kills harmful pathogens may cause damage and death of nearby healthy cells, leading to the formation of scars, such as scar in the liver caused by hepatitis infection.

Additionally,  if the immune system can not destroy the invasive pathogens in a set of times, it will compromise, leading to low-grade inflammation. Prolonged low-grade inflammation caused by continuing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines can result in serious and chronic diseases.

Diseases associated with chronic inflammation induced by protein, lipid and cellular damage include cardiovascular disease, diabetes, neurodegenerative disease,... and cancers.

The results have been found to cause cell death and alternation of cell DNA.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

In the urgency to discover a natural ingredient which processes anti-inflammatory property researchers examined the effects of curcumin on inflammatory cytokines expression.

According to the tested differentiation, curcumin showed strong anti-inflammatory properties by suppressing the many pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines in a number of cell types and pathologic conditions.

Protein such as interleukin-18 (IL-18) associated with the generation of  Th1 in pro-inflammatory responses was also inhibited by the injection curcumin in vivo.

Furthermore, in E.coli LPS stimulated murine macrophage-like cells RAW264.7  induced the activation of pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-18 was also suppressed by curcumin in a concentration-dependent manner without inducing a cytotoxic effect on murine macrophage-like cells.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " Our findings suggest that curcumin may be used as a potential therapeutic agent for the treatment of inflammatory diseases.

Taken altogether, turmeric processed a high amount of bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of inflammatory diseases. pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
