Whole Food Onion, A Natural Prevention of Pancreatic Cancer, Scientists Say

By Kyle J. Norton

The pancreas is an oblong flattened gland in the digestive and endocrine system located in the abdomen.

The gland not only plays a critical role in aiding the digestive system to break down carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids by secreting pancreatic juice to the small intestine but also regulates the production of the hormone insulin to convert glucose to energy from the bloodstream.

Pancreatic cancer is a chronic and medical condition caused by cell growth disorderly in the pancreas innermost layer.

Pancreatic cancer found in the ducts (an exocrine component of the pancreas) that carry pancreatic juices with cancer of an epithelium that originates in glandular tissue accounts for over 75 - 90% of all cases of pancreatic cancers.

At the advanced stage, cancerous cells from the primary pancreas can also travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organ, leading to secondary metastasis.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2019, approximately 56,770 Americans including 29,940 men and 26,830 women will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and pancreatic cancer will also cause the death of 45,750 Americans including 23,800 men and 21,950 women.

And the average lifetime risk of pancreatic cancer is about 1 in 64.

Most common symptoms of pancreatic cancer are
* Back pain is casued tumor grows in the back of the pancreas.

* Unexplained weight loss
Any unintentional weight loss over 10% may be a symptom of cancer.

* Loss of appetite
This is a general and common symptom in all forms of cancer.

*  Pain and discomfort in the stomach area is a result of an oversized tumor that presses on the nerves in the area.

* Jaundice is a result of the oversized tumor that blocks the bile duct, causing bile back up to the liver.

* Fat in stool increase is a result of reduced bile that digests fat to the digestive system.

If you experience some of the aforementioned symptoms, please make sure that you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, a close relation of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.

Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild or sweet.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of pancreatic cancer, researchers conducted a population-based case-control study to investigate the association between vegetables and fruits and pancreatic cancer.

According to the results of 532 cases and 1,701 age- and sex-matched controls completed direct interviews between 1995 and 1999, onion showed a related risk ratio of 0.46 compared to 0.78 for citrus fruits and juice, 0.63 for dark leafy vegetables, 0.76 for cruciferous vegetables, 0.59 for yellow vegetables, 0.56 for carrots, 0.51 for beans.

In other words, the risk of pancreatic cancer is significantly lower in onion consumption compared to other healthy vegetables and fruits.

More precisely, included onion and garlic in your diet, the risk of pancreatic cancer was 0.49 (0.36-0.68) for more than nine servings per day compared to those of less than five servings per day of total vegetables and fruits combined.

The results strongly suggested that onion and garlic have a much strong effect on pancreatic cancer compared to other fruits and vegetable.

Taken altogether, onion used alone or combined with other fruits and vegetable may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of pancreatic cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Turmeric, a Natural Prevention and Treatment of Diabetes

By Kyle J. Norton

Diabetes is a medical condition characterized by insufficient insulins in the bloodstream. or insulins in the bloodstream are not used properly to convert glucose to energy.

Epidemiologically, diabetes is caused either the beta cells in the pancreas died-off or insulin receptors with a function that use insulin to convert glucose to energy clogged-up by fat or cholesterol.

In a healthy individual, after eating, the rise of blood glucose triggers the production of insulin by the pancreas into bloodstream After you eat, your blood sugar (glucose) rises. This rise in glucose triggers your pancreas to release insulin into the bloodstream that travels through the blood to your body's cells before converting glucose into energy or store it to use later.

In other words, insulin released by the pancreas joints with the Insulin receptors on the outer part of a cell that binds insulin in the blood to convert glucose to energy.

If insulin produced by the pancreas can not bind with the insulin receptors, the levels of glucose in the blood remain high that triggers more release of more insulin by the pancreas, leading to insulin resistance, a hallmark of type 2 diabetes.

Diabetics with long-term untreated hyperglycemia may induce some serious complications
* Gangrene
Gangrene is a condition of the death of tissue in part of the body.

* Loss of sensation in limbs
According to Dr. Boulton AJ. at the universities of Manchester, neuropathy is silent in up to 50% of patients.

*Amputation
Amputation is a result of nerve damage and poor blood circulation to the foot of that can lead to poor healing of foot-ulceration.

* Diabetic retinopathy
Diabetic retinopathy is a condition that causes damage to the blood vessels of the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye.

* Diabetic gastropathy

Diabetic gastropathy a condition of neuromuscular dysfunctions in the stomach, including abnormalities of gastric contractility, tone, and myoelectrical activity in patients with diabetes(30).

* Oral and dental complications
According to the study by Department of Medicine, MLN Medical College, Allahabad, oral manifestations in DM of which included periodontal disease in 34%, oral candidiasis in 24%, tooth loss in 24%, oral mucosal ulcers in 22%, taste impairment in 20%, xerostomia and salivary gland hypofunction in 14%, dental caries in 24%, and burning mouth sensation in 10% cases.

* Recurrent infections
Women with diabetes have an increased risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs), especially recurrences. Relapses and reinfections were reported in 7.1% and 15.9% of women with diabetes versus 2.0% and 4.1% of women without diabetes.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On finding a natural compound for the treatment of diabetes with no side effects researchers investigated the anti-diabetic capacity of Curcuma longa volatile oil in terms of its ability to inhibit glucosidase activities.

According to the tested results, turmeric volatile oils are more effective in the inhibition of glucosidase enzymes compared to those of reference standard drug acarbose.

More precisely, the efficacy of turmeric volatile oils were attributed to the drying of rhizomes in enhancing α-glucosidase (IC₅₀ = 1.32-0.38 μg/ml) and α-amylase (IC₅₀ = 64.7-34.3 μg/ml) inhibitory capacities, particularly in Ar-Turmerone, the major volatile component.

In order to reveal additional information about the effect of turmeric, researchers investigated the inhibitory property of turmeric as an adjuvant to anti-diabetic therapy.

The human trial including 60 diabetic subjects on metformin therapy randomized into two groups (30 each) either treated with (group I) standard metformin treatment or standard metformin therapy with turmeric (2 g) supplements (group II) for 4 weeks.

According to the experimental results, turmeric supplementation plus metformin-treated type 2 diabetic patient significantly decreased fasting glucose, and HbA1c levels compared to group I.

Futhermore, reduction in lipid peroxidation, MDA, an oxidative stress marker and enhanced total antioxidant status were also found in group II.

Moreover, turmeric also improved the parameters associated with diabetics such as dyslipidemia LDL cholesterol, non HDL cholesterol and LDL/HDL ratio (3.01 ± 0.61, P < 0.01) and reduced inflammatory marker, hsCRP.

Dr. Maithili Karpaga Selvi N, the lead scientist said, "Turmeric supplementation as an adjuvant to T2DM on metformin treatment had a beneficial effect on blood glucose, oxidative stress and inflammation".

Taken altogether, turmeric used alone or combined with other medicine may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of diabetes, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Lycopene Protects the Blood Vessels Against Stroke, Particularly in Men

By Kyle J. Norton

Stroke is a medical condition caused by reduced blood flow to the brain, leading to the death of brain cells due to lack of oxygen or bleeding.

In other words, a stroke can be classified into a type of blocking artery (ischemic stroke) or the leaking or bursting of a blood vessel (hemorrhagic stroke).

A mini-stroke is a temporary disruption of blood flow to the brain that resolves in a short time without causing permanent damage to the brain.

Most common symptoms of a mini-stroke may include are dysphasia, dysarthria, or physical difficulty when speaking, vision changes, confusion, balance issues, and tingling.

A blood clot is the most common cause of mini-stroke involved in high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, or narrowed arteries caused by plaque buildup, diabetes, and high blood cholesterol

However, most common symptoms of stroke include paralysis or numbness of the face, arm or leg, problems in vision, speaking, walking and persistent headache.

Most common prevalent factors found in post-stroke patients are diabetes. heart diseases, long-term use of tobacco, the increase in age, ethnicity.

In examining the post-stroke patients, a poor diet pattern with a high in saturated and trans fat, red meat and processed foods have been found in the high percentage, compared to the traditional diet.

Dr. Mehdi Foroughi, the lead scientist in the study of poor diet in the risk of stoke wrote, " Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and certainly the major cause of disability in the world. Diet and nutrient have an effective role in the prevention and control of the risk of stroke".
And, "Adherence to the Mediterranean diet or DASH diet and increasing the consumption of antioxidants, vitamins, potassium, calcium food sources, vegetables, fruits, and whole grains intake can lower the risk of stroke. A healthy diet is effective in reducing the risk of stroke".
Lycopene is a phytochemical found in tomato in the class of carotenoid, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas.

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and perform various functions in photosynthesis.

On finding a natural compound for the prevention of stroke, researchers examined the association of lycopene with the risk of stroke.

According to the results of  725 men aged 46-64 years examined in 1991-3 in the Kuopio Ischaemic Heart Disease Risk Factor Study with 41 subjects had either a fatal or a non-fatal acute coronary event or a stroke by December 1997, researchers found that men in the lowest quarter of serum lycopene levels had a 3.3-fold risk of stroke.

In other words, low levels of lycopene over a long period of time was associated with an increased risk of atherosclerotic vascular events in middle-aged men previously free of CHD and stroke.

Furthermore, the study that screens the PubMed database through October 2013 including with 116,127 participants, also suggested that lycopene decreased stroke risk by 19.3%m after adjusting for confounding factors.

However, the circulating lycopene was associated with a statistically significant decrease in stroke risk compared to those of dietary lycopene.

Additionally, men are more benefits in reducing the risk of stroke with the circulating lycopene compared to women.

Taken altogether, lycopene found in tomato may be considered supplements for the prevention stroke, particularly in men, pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara) Processes Anti-Inflammatory Activity

By Kyle J. Norton

Inflammation is a natural defense of the immune system that protects the body against the insult from the foreign invasion.

Acute inflammation occurs quickly that lasts a few days or weeks. Most cases of acute inflammation induced tissues damage are healed themselves after all pathogens are killed off.

However, if the immune system can not completely eradicate all invaders in the acute phase of infection, it will compromise, leading to chronic low-grade inflammation, a major cause of cardiovascular disease, arthritis, and diabetes.

Chronic inflammation is a low-grade inflammation caused by the inability of the immune system to eliminate the invasive pathogens occurred in the acute phase of infection.

Any inflammation that lasts more than 8 weeks is considered chronic inflammation.

Believe it or not, worldwide, 3 of 5 death are results from chronic inflammatory diseases like stroke, chronic respiratory diseases, heart disorders, cancer, obesity, and diabetes.

In the US, chronic inflammatory diseases affect more than 50 million Americans each year.

Anti-inflammation is a process that inhibits the pro-inflammatory cytokines without affecting the immune system activity against pathogens.

Diseases associated with low-grade inflammation include diabetes and cardiovascular.

Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara) is a perennial herbaceous plant, genus Tussilago, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia. The herb has been used over thousands of year to treat asthma, various coughs, bronchial congestion, respiratory disorders, headaches and obstruction in the nasal passage, etc.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of diseases associated with inflammation, researchers examined the anti-inflammatory effect of Tussilagone (FTF), isolated from the flower of buds of Tussilago farfara (Compositae).

The study included compounds 1-4 chlorogenic acid (1), 3,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid (2), 3,4-dicaffeoylquinic acid (3), and 4,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid (4) isolated from ETE and their mixture was determined by spectral analysis given to mice orally in a ratio of 5:28:41:26 as in EtE) at doses of 10 and 20 mg/kg once daily for 3 days.
All mixture showed a significant antitussive effect by exhibiting anti-inflammatory effects against cough frequency by 61.7%.

Compared to other compounds, compound 2 was the most potent to enhance the phenol red secretion by 35.7% in alleviating inflammation.

Compound 4 showed the strongest effect to inhibit the leukocytosis by 49.7%.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "The caffeoylquinic acids and their mixture, exhibiting significant antitussive, expectorant, and anti-inflammatory effects, could be considered as the main effective ingredients of FTF, and they may act in a collective and synergistic way".

Taken altogether, coltsfoot may be considered a remedy for the treatment of disease associated with inflammatory disease, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Bromelain, Processes Cytotoxic Property Against Peritoneal Mesothelioma

By Kyle J. Norton

Peritoneal mesothelioma is a medical condition characterized by irregular cells growth in the tissues of the abdomen (the peritoneum).

Most cases of peritoneal mesothelioma begin in the cell in the surface of the inner lining of the peritoneum, before penetrating into the deeper layers.

At the early stage, due to the small size of the tumor, patients with peritoneal mesothelioma are asymptomatic.

However, at the later stage, patients may experience symptoms of abdominal pain or swelling due to the larger size tumor has pressed on the nearby nerves tissues and blood vessels, changes in bowel habits, feeling of fullness and night sweat accompanied by the general symptoms shared by other types of cancer, such as unexplained weight loss, gastrointestinal discomforts, and loss of appetite.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, compared to other types of cancer mesothelioma is rare, approximately  2,000 to 3,000 new cases of mesothelioma in the US each year.  The asbestos-related mesothelioma only accounts for less than 0.3 percent of all cancer diagnosed in the country.

Peritoneal mesothelioma accounts for less than 20 percent of all mesothelioma cases.

Dr. Rodolfo Fonte, the lead scientist in the examination of the risk of asbestos-induced peritoneal mesothelioma in a construction worker, wrote, "Peritoneal mesothelioma is a rare and aggressive asbestos-related malignancy. We present the case of a 65-year-old man who developed recurrent ascites after having been exposed to asbestos in the building industry for > 40 years".

And, "Occupational history and immunohistochemistry are helpful for the correct diagnosis, which, in turn, is important in relation to prognosis and treatment (adoption of new integrated procedures that seem to promise prolonged survival and increased quality of life), and in relation to medicolegal issues and occupation-related compensation claims following asbestos exposure".

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient for the treatment of peritoneal mesothelioma, researchers examined the effects of Bromelain (cysteine proteinase) effects on Mucin 1 (MUC1), a glycosylation-dependent protein that confers tumors with invasiveness, metastasis, and chemoresistance.

On the study in which researchers compared the efficacy of with the application of various concentrations of bromelain and after 4 and 72 h and combinations of bromelain and cytotoxic drugs (cisplatin or 5-FU) at 72 h, MUC1-expressing MPM cell lines found that bromelain increased the cytotoxicity of cisplatin significantly in cell lines.

Compared to the aforementioned inhibition, combining fluorouracil with bromelain did not show a significant increase in cytotoxicity.

In other words, bromelain improves the chemotherapy depending totally on the types of drugs used for the treatment of peritoneal mesothelioma.

Furthermore, bromelain used alone also showed a significant effect in inducing cell death by apoptosis and autophagy.

On pancreatic and breast cancer cells, injection of bromelain also adversely affected the viability of MUC1 expressing on both cell lines.

Based on the findings, Bromelain used alone or combined with other chemo drugs might have a strong effect on the barrier function of MUC1.

Collectively, bromelain inhibited the progression and proliferation of peritoneal mesothelioma by blocking the activity of gene MUC1.

Dr. Pillai K, the lead scientists said, " current evidence indicates that bromelain may have the potential of being developed into an effective anticancer agent for MPM".

Taken altogether, bromelain may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of peritoneal mesothelioma, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of bromelain in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Ashwagandha Inhibits The Onset of Glioblastoma

By Kyle J. Norton

Primary glioblastoma is one of the most aggressive cancers that begins within the brain. Cancer may arise as a Grade IV tumor with no evidence.

According to the statistic, the median survival time of primary glioblastoma is approximately 3 months without medical treatment. Glioblastomas represent about 15% of all primary brain tumors.

In the US, the median age of glioblastoma diagnosed is 64 years and the incidence of the disease onset is 1.6 times higher in males compared to females.

Furthermore, the condition is 2 times higher in Caucasians compared to Africans and Afro-Americans.

Because of the rapid growth, patients diagnosed with primary glioblastoma experience sudden brain swelling and increased brain pressure, leading to symptoms of nausea, vomiting, and severe headaches and localized symptoms depending on the location of the tumor.

Conventionally, radiation and chemotherapy are the most common forms of treatment for patients with glioblastoma particularly, in a tumor that cannot be removed with surgery.

The causes of glioblastoma are not identified. However, the increased in age and genetic preposition are the 2 most common risk factors found in patients with the disease.

Dr. Athanassios P. Kyritsis, in the concern of the rapid progression of glioblastoma, wrote, "Scientific evidence during the last few years has revealed several constitutive genetic abnormalities that may influence glioma formation".

And, "These germline abnormalities are manifested as either gene polymorphisms or hemizygous mutations of key regulatory genes that are involved either in DNA repair or in apoptosis".

Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belongings to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of gliomas, the type of primary brain tumor in adults, researchers examined the effects of Withania somnifera (ashwagandha) on neuronal cell lines.

In vitro, ashwagandha water extract (ASH-WEX) showed a strong cell cycle arrest in the G2/M phase by activating multiple pro-apoptotic pathways associated with genes in the suppression of cells progression and proliferation, such as cyclin D1, bcl-xl, and p-Akt.

Furthermore, the expression of the polysialylated form of neural cell adhesion molecule (PSA-NCAM) and matrix metalloproteinases that promote neural plasticity and tumor malignancy was also inhibited by the administration of the extract.

Moreover, in vivo, ASH-WEX also suppressed the tumor-promoting proteins such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) and exerted the aforementioned effects in the rat model of orthotopic glioma allograft.

Additionally, the extract not only inhibited the reduction in glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and upregulation of mortalin associated with cancer malignancy and poor prognosis but also blocked neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) expression in tumor-bearing tissue involved cancer cell proliferation, motility, and migration.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "ASH-WEX in glioma with in vivo model system offers new opportunities to develop a therapeutic strategy for safe, specific, and effective formulations for treating brain tumors".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and treatment of glioblastoma, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Green Peas Improve Cognitive Performance in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Cognitive performance is the process of the brain ability to process thoughts in healthy individuals.
Memory impairment is a condition associated with a slow decline in memory, thinking and reasoning skills. Over time, the condition can worsen enough to affect the quality of life and daily activity.

Memory loss frequently is an early sign of memory deficit.

Some memory change can be resolved on their own or cured by medical treatment if the underlining cause is found. However, loss or gradual loss of neurons capacity cannot be revered such as dementia.

According to statistics, in the US, approximately 5.7 million people are living with dementia. Most common form of dementia is Alzheimer's disease, affecting 5.5 million people of all ages.

Most common risk factor associated with memory deficit is increasing age, smoking the genetic preposition of APOE-e4, also linked to Alzheimer's disease, obesity and medical conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and depression, and physical inactivity.

However, an unhealthy diet has been found to promote a gradual loss and death of neurons such as Alzheimer's disease.

Accompanied by aging, both aging and unhealthy diet may be the major culprits that cause memory deficit in large numbers of older adults, leading to irreversible memory impairment such as AD and PD.

Dr. Amy C. Reichelt, said, "The so-called western diet is rich in saturated fat and refined carbohydrates. Excessive consumption of this diet is associated not only with the development of obesity but also with reduced global cognitive function, cognitive decline, and dementia (Morris et al., ). This Research Topic explores the effects of diet and diet-induced obesity on learning, memory, and cognition in both experimental and epidemiological settings".

And, "High fat and high sugar foods are highly rewarding and excessive consumption leads to enduring alterations in brain regions involved in learning, memory, and reward. These changes are proposed to drive overconsumption by promoting food-seeking behaviors".

Green peas are species of Pisum Sativum belongings to the family Fabaceae and native to western Asia from the Mediterranean Sea to the Himalaya Mountains. The pea is a green, pod-shaped vegetable and a cool-season crop grown in many parts of the world.

On finding a potent ingredient for the improvement of brain functioning, researchers investigated the impact of green pea (GP) supplementation on cognitive performance.

The study included Maze model and Passive avoidance Paradigm served as Exteroceptive Behavioral models induced by Scopolamine and ethanol as amnesic agents were treated by administration of Pisum sativum (PS) at concentrations 2.5% w/w and 5% w/w  for 15 successive days.

Based on the tested differentiation, mice treated by Pisum sativum (PS)  showed a decrease in transfer latency and increase in step down latency.

Furthermore, green peas not only ameliorated memory deficits induced by scopolamine and ethanol but a significant increase in brain Glutathione levels,.

Moreover, Pisum sativum (PS)  at different concentrations also inhibited brain stress marker observed on declined levels of Malondialdehyde levels and Acetylcholinesterase activity in the brain.

Collectively, researchers said, "Therefore, behavioral effects of PS would be worthwhile in management of cognitive dysfunctions".

Taken altogether, green peas may be considered a functional food for the prevention of cognitive dysfunctions,  pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
