Bromelain Modulates the Immune Function Against Allergic Airway Disease

By Kyle J. Norton

Inflammation is a natural reaction of the immune system which protects our body against the stimuli of invasive pathogens.

Acute inflammation is a result of the immune white blood cell response to tissue damage or injury by stimulating the production of proinflammatory cytokines during the acute phase of infection.

Some researchers that the immune has evolved over thousands of year to destroy the foreigner pathogens in specific time within 3 -8 weeks, otherwise, it will adapt to the change, a leading cause of chronic inflammation

Allergic airway inflammation is an abnormal reaction of the immune system towards unharmfully common and environmental factors, such as pollen grains or dust mites.

Most common diseases associated with allergic airway inflammation are
* Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the airway of the lung with recurring symptoms, such as wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing. The disease affects people of all ages, and mostly starts during childhood.

*Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the third leading cause of death in the US can be classified into
** Emphysema casued by damage to tissues of the air sacs (alveoli) in the lungs is a type of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)associated with a long term and progressive condition cause of shortness of breath but depending to the stage of lung function.

** Chronic bronchitis is a chronic inflammation of the lung’s bronchi that causes the increased production of mucus in the lung induced symptoms of difficulty breathing.

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of diseases associated with airway inflammation, researchers examined the effect of bromelain effect on reduced inflammation of preexisting asthma via ovalbumin (OVA)-induced murine model of allergic airway disease (AAD).

The study included sensitized female C57BL/6J mice received phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) with intraperitoneal OVA/alum and then challenged them with OVA aerosolization for 10 consecutive days. However, on day 4, daily doses of PBS was administrated to the control group (n = 10) and bromelain (6mg/kg) in PBS to the bromelain (intervention) group (n = 10).

According to the tested analysis, bromelain treatment of AAD mice (bromelain group) exerted a significant anti-inflammatory activity observed by the reduced BAL total leukocytes (P < .05), eosinophils (P < .05), and cellular infiltrates, compared to the control group.

Futhermore, the bromelain treatment group also significantly reduced BAL CD4+ and CD8+ T cells associated with inflammatory progression without affecting cell numbers in the spleen or hilar lymph node.

Levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukins IL-4, IL-12, IL-17, as well as IFN-α in the serum of bromelain-treated animals were also reduced compared to control.

More precisely, bromelain inhibited the allergic airway inflammatory disease through modulating the immune responses and inhibiting the expression of a protein associated with pro-inflammation.

Moreover, on mice sensitized with intraperitoneal (i.p.) OVA/alum and challenged with daily OVA aerosols followed by the treatment of either saline, 2 or 6 mg/kg bromelain, twice daily for four consecutive days.

Bromelain treatment of AAD mice showed a similar effect as the aforementioned study by reducing total BAL leukocytes, eosinophils, CD4+ and CD8+ T lymphocytes, CD4+/CD8+ T cell ratio, and IL-13, compared to saline group.

Based on the findings, some researchers suggested that bromelain may have similar effects in the treatment of human asthma and hypersensitivity disorders.

Taken altogether, bromelain may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of allergic airway disease, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of bromelain in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Healthy Food Onion Protects the Cell DNA Against the Risk of Ovarian Cancer

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of diseases caused by irregular cells growth due to the alternation of the DNA.

After penetrating into deeper layer tissues of a specific organ, the proliferative tumor cell can travel a distance away from the originated site to invade other healthy tissues, via lymph or blood.

Most advanced stage of cancer may result in the death of the patients.

The ovaries are an oval-shaped ovum-producing reproductive organ in part of a woman's reproductive system connected to the fallopian tubes and attached to the outer layer of the uterus via the ovarian ligament. Usually, the left and right ovary take a turn to release an egg every month.

Ovarian cancer is a condition of abnormal cells growth of ovarian cells that start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissue of the ovary have become cancerous. Ovarian cancer is one of the most common cancer in the US, according to the statistics adapted from the American Cancer Society's publication,.

 Cancer Facts & Figures 2010, an estimated 21,880 women in the United States will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer and 13,850 deaths.

The exact causes of ovarian cancer are unknown. However, the most common prevalent factors associated with increased risk of ovarian cancer are
*Age
The risk of ovarian cancer increases for women between 50 to 70 years of age.

* Genetic preposition
Women who carry certain mutation genes such as BRCA1 and BRCA2 account for 5%–13% of ovarian cancers.

* Family history
Risk of the disease increases, if one of your direct member family has a history of cancer.

* Never pregnant
Researchers found that the risk of ovarian cancer is lower with numbers of pregnancy.

* Race
White women are associated with a higher risk than other race.

* Hormone therapy
Risk of ovarian cancer increase with the use of hormone replacement therapy in post-menopausal women.

* Chemicalsexposures
Certain chemicals such as asbestos also increase the risk of ovarian cancer.

* High fat dietary
Researchers found that women who diet high in saturated fat and trans fat are at higher risk.

* Fertility medication
Drugs used to enhance fertility such as Clomiphene citrate may increase the risk of ovarian cancer.

* Milk
According to the BBC, researchers found that women who drank two or more glasses a day were at double the risk of those who did not consume it at all, or only in small amounts.

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, a close relation of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.

Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild or sweet.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of lung cancer,  researchers examined the effects of onionin A (ONA) derived from the onion in the inhibition of tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) in the M2 phenotype.

According to the tested analysis.
* Onionin A (ONA )inhibits ovarian cancer cell proliferation induced by co-culture with human macrophages.

* Onionin A directly suppressed lung cancer cell proliferation.

* Onionin A enhanced the effects of anti-cancer drugs was also observed.

* In ovarian cancer cells. signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) involved in cell proliferation and chemo-resistance were significantly suppressed by ONA.

* Additionally, ONA inhibited cancer progression and prolonged the survival time in a murine ovarian cancer model under single and combined with chemo drug treatment conditions.

Based on the finding, researchers said, "ONA is considered useful for the additional treatment of patients with lung cancer owing to its suppression of the pro-tumor activation of tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) and direct cytotoxicity against cancer cells".

Taken altogether, onion processed a higher mount of onionin A (ONA) may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of lung cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Turmeric, the Natural Corticosteroids for the Treatment of Oral Lichen Planus

By Kyle J. Norton

Oral lichen planus is a  chronic inflammatory condition that affects mucous membranes inside the mouth.

Most common symptoms of oral lichen planus are white patches and red, swollen tissues, accompanied by pain and burning sensation that affect eating.

In some cases, patients with oral lichen planus also experience the symptoms of an open sore.

The condition is associated with the immune system that mistakenly attacks the cells of the oral mucous membranes for unknown reasons.

Most common area affected by being inside of the cheeks, gums,  tongue, particularly the inner tissues of the lips palate. Oral lichen planus is not contagious.

Conventionally, as of today, there is no cure for the condition. Most cases of oral lichen plants are treated by corticosteroids to reduce inflammation accompanied by the use of mouthwash, ointment or gel is applied directly to the mucous membrane.

In severe cases, autoimmune response medicine may also be used in patients to suppress or modify your body's immune response with an aim to improve more-severe lesions and lessen pain.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belongings to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On findings a potential compound for the treatment of oral lichen planus, researchers examined the efficacy of curcumin in the treatment of the inflammation associated with mucous membranes inside the mouth.

By searching the database on the medical literature, four trials assessing the comparative efficacy of topical curcumin vs. topical corticosteroids and three trials assessing the efficacy of oral curcumin vs. placebo were identified and included in the review.

According to the results, topical curcumin exerted reductions in pain, burning, and clinical manifestations of OLP versus baseline, effects similar or inferior to topical corticosteroids.

However, oral administration of curcumin showed no significant benefits compared to placebo but provided some potential benefits and reasonable safety in an observational extension study.

In other words, topical curcumin displayed a clinical effect against oral lichen planus compared to only some benefits in oral curcumin injection with little or no side effects.

In order to reveal more information about curcumin anti oral lichen planus property, researchers examined the evidence for the safety of curcumin in treating OLP as well as its efficacy compared to that of corticosteroids.

The search of the database of PubMed, EMBASE, EBSCO, and Cochrane Library identified 9 studies met the inclusion criteria, including six randomized, double-blind clinical trials; two pilot clinical trials; and one case report.

In 259 OLP patients were included in the systematic review, researchers found that
* Curcumin showed statistically significant differences in pain severity and clinical appearance of oral 7 studies. for a period of time, compared to baseline.

* According to the results of 3 controlled clinical trials, curcumin exerted a significant effect on pain severity and clinical appearance of oral lesions similar to that of corticosteroids.

After taking others into account, Dr. Lv KJ, wrote in the final report, "Curcumin is a safe treatment and can be used as an adjunct in combination with corticosteroids to reduce pain, burning sensations, and the clinical appearance of oral lesions in OLP patients".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of oral lichen planus, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Antioxidant Carotenoids Protect the Eyes Against Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

By Kyle J. Norton

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a medical condition which causes the slow and progressive vision loss in the central vision found in people over age 60. Over time, AMD may affect the reading as the blurred area increased in size.

In other words, AMD may cause significant visual disability.

Most cases of the early stage of AMD were diagnosed during routine eye health examinations.

At the early stage, age-related macular degeneration is asymptomatic. However, most patients experience symptoms of shadowy areas in your central vision or unusually fuzzy or distorted vision, particularly in seeing wavy or blurred, with some dark areas at the center.

If you have some of the aforementioned symptoms, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

According to statistics, approximately 11 million people in the US have some forms of age-related macular degeneration. The risk of getting advanced age-related macular degeneration increases from 2% for those ages 50-59 to nearly 30% for those over the age of 75.

Besides aging, some researchers suggest that other factors such as smoking, family history, gender, race, sun exposure, diet, and obesity also increase the risk of AMD developing.

However, most people with some of the risk factors have never developed AMD.

Dr. Sara Velilla, the lead scientist in the investigation of the risk of smoking on AMD wrote, "Smoking is the most important modifiable risk factor for AMD development and progression".

And, "...smoking by itself promotes molecular and pathological changes that may establish an ideal macular microenvironment for the development of AMD: vascular inflammation and endothelial dysregulation [], oxidative damage [], toxic damage, and histopathological changes []".

The results strongly suggested, if you smoke, your risk of age-related macular degeneration is increased by many folds.

Carotenoids is a class of mainly yellow, orange, or red fat-soluble pigments, including lycopene and carotene, found abundantly in ripe tomato, pumpkins, carrots, corn, and daffodils.

With an aim to find the potential compound for the prevention and treatment of age-related macular degeneration, researchers evaluated lutein and zeaxanthin (L/Z) are the predominant carotenoids accumulated in the retina of the eye.

Where lutein and zeaxanthin (L/Z)  have been found to improve and enhance eye health in the general population, particularly in the elderly.

According to the chemical analysis, the effective levels of L/Z achieved through diet alone, with values of 5 mg and 10 mg per day have a strong implication among people at high risk of AMD or with early signs and symptoms of AMD.

In other words, dietary sources of carotenoids can prevent the onset of progression of age-related macular degeneration even with people at a higher risk of AMD.

In order to confirm the effect of lutein and zeaxanthin (L/Z) activity in the protection AMD, the University of Melbourne. conducted an experiment containing 254 who were identified with early age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Intakes of L/Z and fatty acids were estimated from food frequency questionnaires.

According to the results, researchers surprisingly found that
*  L/Z  have a strong implication in reducing the risk of AMD in a dose depending manner.

* Increasing L/Z intake were associated with progression of AMD. The too much of a good thing (L/Z) might be harmful.

After taking other factors into account, researchers wrote, " It is possible that in this study participants adopted a more healthy diet, having been aware of their AMD status at the beginning of the study. This healthy diet was then reflected in the dietary questionnaire completed at the end of study".

And, " However, this explanation may not adequately explain why those whose AMD had progressed, on the basis of fundus signs and not symptoms such as visual acuity decline, adopted a healthier lifestyle more aggressively than those without progression".

Based on the findings, daily intake of L/Z intake up to 10 mg per day was associated with decreasing the risk of AMD

Taken altogether, carotenoids processed abundantly L/Z may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of age-related macular degeneration, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of carotenoids in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Bilberry Normalizes Your Blood Cholesterol with No Side Effects

By Kyle J. Norton

Hyperlipidemia is a condition of abnormally high levels of lipoproteins in the bloodstream. It is also one of the members of a cluster of metabolic syndrome and a risk factor of cardiovascular disease.

There are 2 types of cholesterol
* Low-density lipoproteins produced by the liver or from dietary sources plays an essential role in the production of bile for the nutrient absorption in the gastrointestinal tract, vitamins, steroid hormone. The waxy substance is also needed to build strong cell membranes.

* High-density lipoproteins also produced by the liver and from a dietary source with the main function in transporting the low-density lipoproteins back to the liver for future use.

The healthy ration (LDL/ HDL) of blood cholesterol is any number which is less than 4.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, in the US, 71 million American adults (33.5%) have high low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or “bad,” cholesterol and only 1 out of every 3 adults with high LDL cholesterol has the condition under control.

Sadly, less than half of adults with high LDL cholesterol get treatment.

Untreated high LDL has been found to induce many health problems, including heart attack or stroke.

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

Researchers on finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of hyperlipidemia comparable to those conventional medicines with no side effects compared ed the anti-high blood cholesterol effects of Vaccinium myrtillus L. leaf (, bilberry, VLE) and Phaseolus vulgaris L. seed coat (PCE) plant extracts.

The study included male Wistar rats with STZ and HFD-induced diabetes fed with or without VLE or PCE for 50 days.

During the experiment, the VLE treatment group normalized parameters of lipid metabolism. In other words, bilberry extract inhibited all side effects of rats injected by STZ and HFD induced abnormally high blood cholesterol.

According to the tested assays, there was no significant difference from the same parameters in the intact control group compared to those rats STZ and HFD-induced diabetes fed with VLE.

The efficacy of VLE inhibited the hyperlipidemic activity was attributed by the enhancing production of antioxidants against lipid oxidation.

Dr. Sidorova Y, the lead scientist, after taking other factors into accounts wrote, "The set of results that were obtained in the present study reveals lipid-lowering and antioxidant action related to the administration of VLE and PCE in Wistar rats with diabetes, induced by STZ".

In order to reveal more information about Vaccinium myrtillus (bilberry) hyperlipidemic effect, researchers investigated the effects of bilberry against DM-induced by intraperitoneal injection of alloxan (120 mg kg(-1) body weight (BW)).

Injection of bilberry not only exerted a significant reduction of glucose compared with the diabetic control but also normalized the blood cholesterol in all aspects, including the total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), very-low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-C), triglycerides (TG) and C-reactive protein (CRP).

In other words, dietary supplementation with bilberry fruits may protect against impaired lipid metabolism in DM.

Taken altogether, bilberry may be considered a functioning remedy for the treatment of hyperlipidemia with no side effects, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Healthy Food Navy Bean Protects Large Intestines Against Colitis

By Kyle J. Norton

Colitis is medical a condition characterized by the inflammation of the large intestine, including the colon, caecum, and rectum.

Depending on the causes, colitis can be classified into microscopic colitis, ischemic colitis, segmental colitis associated with diverticula, radiation colitis, diversion colitis, eosinophilic colitis, and Behcet's colitis, particularly in those associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), such as ulcerative colitis (UC).

* Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is the inflammation of chronic inflammation of the digestive tract associated with symptoms of severe diarrhea, abdominal pain, fatigue, and weight loss.

* Microscopic colitis is a disease involved in the inflammation of the colon or large intestine, associated with symptoms of watery diarrhea and cramping. Microscopic colitis is much less severe than other types of inflammatory bowel disease.

* Ischemic colitis is an inflammation of the large intestine caused by the injury-induced inadequate blood supply to the colon, leading to pain on the left side of the abdomen.

* Segmental colitis associated with diverticula is an inflammation that affects colonic luminal mucosa in segments due to diverticulosis, causing symptoms of bloody stools, sometimes accompanied by abdominal pain, cramping discomfort, or diarrhea.

* Radiation colitis is an inflammation of the large intestines in patients with radiation therapy, leading to symptoms of diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and stomach cramps.

* Diversion colitis is an inflammation of the large intestines as a complication of ileostomy or colostomy. Most cases of diversion colitis often occur within the year following the surgery.

* Eosinophilic colitis is a rare disease associated with a type of white blood cell, due to injury and inflammation to the large intestine.

* Behcet's colitis is chronic immune-mediated, inflammatory disorders that only affect the intestines but also the joints, skin, eyes, and biliary tracts.

The small, white navy bean, also called pea bean or haricot, popular in both dry and green forms, is very popular in Britain and the US, native to Peru. It is now grown and consumed across the world, due to their numerous health benefits.

On finding a natural compound for the protection of digestive function, researchers examined the black and navy beans effects within the colon that improve gut health and mitigate the severity of colitis-associated inflammatory pathology.

The study included C57Bl/6 mice pre-fed isocaloric 20% cooked navy bean (NB) or black bean (BB) diets for 3 weeks then switched to control basal diet (BD) 24 h prior to colitis induction via 5-day exposure to dextran sodium sulfate (2% w/v in drinking water)+3 days of freshwater.

According to the observation of the inflammatory transcription factors, such as NFκB, STAT3, black and navy beans pre-fed showed a significant effect on the reduced severity of the acute colitis phenotype.

The levels of inflammatory mediator levels in the colon such as IL-1β, IL-6, IL-18, and MCP-1 were also lowered in the black and navy bean pre-fed groups compared to control.

Furthermore, the levels of biomarkers that enhanced wound repair responses were increased by bean prefeeding groups.

Moreover, black and navy beans pre-fed group not only also normalized the colonic epithelial function but also promoted epithelial barrier integrity, defense and/or restitution and wound closure compared to the control.

Based on the findings, Dr. Monk JM, the lead scientist wrote, "Collectively, bean supplementation prior to colitis induction (i.e., mimicking disease relapse) primes the colonic microenvironment to attenuate the severity of the colitis inflammatory phenotype and maintain aspects of epithelial barrier function".

Taken altogether, the navy bean may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of colitis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Collard Greens, the Health Promotion Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Collard Greens is considered a functional food that promotes publish health against heart disease and cancer.

The heart formed part of the circulatory system is a muscular organ pumping blood through the blood vessels to nourish the cells, tissues, and organs of the body.

Heart disease is a class of condition associated with reduced function of the heart due to damage of the structure, including the heart muscle.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, in the US, over 60 million Americans are living with some forms of heart disease. Every year about 735,000 Americans have a heart attack, including 525,000 of first heart attack and 210,000 of a recurrent heart attack.

Believe it or not, heart disease is a leading cause of death in the US, accounting for 1 in every 4 deaths.

Cancer is a group of medical and chronic conditions caused by irregular cell growth in the tissue of a specific organ due to the alternation of cell DNA.

Most cases of invasive cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of specific gland and organ before proliferating to deeper layer to form a tumor.

The National Cancer Institute, In 2018, over 1,735,000 new cases of cancer were diagnosed in the United States. The disease also causes the death of over 609,000 of Americans in the same year.

Some researchers suggested the increased risk of heart disease and cancer in the US over the past few decades may be correlated to the promotion of a high-fat diet that causes the incidence of obesity.

Dr. Ryan J. Koene, the lead scientist said, "CVD and cancer possess various similarities and possible interactions, including a number of similar risk factors (e.g. obesity, diabetes), suggesting shared biology for which there is emerging evidence".

And, "While chronic inflammation is an indispensable feature of the pathogenesis and progression of both CVD and cancer, additional mechanisms can be found at their intersection".

Collard Green is a species of Brassica Oleracea, belongings to the family Brassicaceae with unknown origin. Today, the plant is cultivated commercially for its thick, slightly bitter edible leaves.

With an aim to find a potent and natural compound for the prevention of heart disease, researchers examined the effect of collard greens on lowering recirculation of bile acids and health promotion in the utilization of cholesterol to synthesize bile acid and reduced fat absorption.

Eight replicate incubations in the study included a substrate only, a bile acid mixture only, and 6 with the substrate and bile acid mixture were compared to Cholestyramine (a cholesterol-lowering, bile acid-binding drug) as positive control treatment and cellulose as the negative control.

Compared to the Cholestyramine collard greens, showed a 13% bile acid-binding on dry matter basis.

Furthermore, collard greens demonstrated a health-promoting potential far better than those of other testing vegetables including kale and Brussel sprout.

Moreover, steam cooking collard greens also exerted a significant improvement in vitro bile acid-binding activity.

Based on the findings, researchers after taking other factors into account wrote, "Inclusion of steam-cooked collard greens, kale, mustard greens, broccoli, green bell pepper, and cabbage in our daily diet as health-promoting vegetables should be emphasized".

In other words, regular and daily consumption of green/leafy vegetables, particularly in steam cooking, would lower the risk of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease and cancer, and improve public health.

Taken altogether, collard green may be considered a functional food for the promotion of overall health, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
