Antioxidants Lycopene Protects the Neurons Integrity Against Cognitive Deficits

By Kyle J. Norton

Memory deficit is a condition that affects the memory contributing to the significant impact on daily functioning.

Memory is an accumulated of experience that binds together thoughts and impressions in your life from childhood to adulthood.

Most common disease associated with memory loss besides trauma is dementia, a class of neurodegenerative disease that has been found to process the gradual loss of memory in the elderly due to the death of specific neurons.

Memory deficits can be acute. Short-term memory is a process that allows you to remember things temporarily, such as reading a book, going to shopping with a list in your mind.

Loss of short-term memory can be devastating. People with this condition can not remember the content in a task that they try to discuss with others

In other words, people with a weak working memory can’t remember what they wanted to say.

In chronic memory deficits or long-term memory loss, patients have trouble recalling information when they are needed. Aging has been found to be one of the major risk factors which weaken long-and short term memory.

Chronic memory loss caused by psychological conditions such as stress, nutrients deficiency, depression, and medication can be reversible. However, loss of neurons in the brain is one of the irreversible chronic memory deficits found in a large population in the elderly, such as patients with Alzheimer’s disease.

Memory impairment is a condition associated with a slow decline in memory, thinking and reasoning skills. Over time, the condition can worsen enough to affect the quality of life and daily activity.

Some memory change can be resolved on their own or cured by medical treatment. Others due to the loss of neuron and quantity capacity cannot be revered such as dementia.

According to statistics, every year over 7.7 million new cases are diagnosed. The disease is a leading cause of dependency and mental impairment among the elderly population.

Conventionally, there is no cure for dementia,  treatment of irreversible memory impairment is focusing to improve the quality of life by delaying the progression of underlying diseases such as AD and PD.

Lycopene is a phytochemical in the class of carotenoid, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and perform various functions in photosynthesis.

On finding a natural compound for the treament of oxidative stress effects in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD), researchers examined whether lycopene or lycopene/vitamin E could exert protective effects on memory deficit and oxidative stress in tau transgenic mice expressing P301L mutation.

The experiment included P301L transgenic mice randomly assigned to three groups: P301L group (P301L), P301L+lycopene (Lyc), and P301L+lycopene/vitamin E (Lyc+VE) with age-matched C57BL/6J mice as wild type controls (Con).

The P301L group showed a significant spatial and passive memory impairments observed by elevated oxidative stress markers of malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and decreased levels of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host compared to control.

According to neuro analysis, the P301L group also exhibited an increase of tau phosphorylation at Thr231/Ser235, Ser262, and Ser396 in the brain.

Supplementations of lycopene or lycopene/vitamin E administration significantly ameliorate the memory deficits, by decreasing the levels of MDA concentrations and increasing the production of the GSH-Px activities.

Markedly, the lycopene or lycopene/vitamin E treament groups also attenuated tau hyperphosphorylation at multiple AD-related sites.

These findings strongly suggested that lycopene or lycopene/vitamin E protect the integrity of the neurons against the increase of tau phosphorylation associated with neuronal cell dysfunction caused by oxidative stress through their antioxidant activity.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, " the combination of lycopene and vitamin E antioxidants acted in a synergistic fashion to bring significant effects against oxidative stress in tauopathies".

Taken altogether, lycopene found in tomato used alone or combined with vitamin E may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of cognitive deficits, pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Whole Food Ginger Speeds Up the Recovery From Sore Throat (Pharyngitis)

By Kyle J. Norton

Pharyngitis or a sore throat is a condition characterized by the inflammation of the pharynx.

The pharynx. is membrane-lined cavity behind the nose and mouth, connecting to the tubes to the stomach and the lungs.

Most cases of a sore throat are associated with other symptoms such as running nose and abdominal pain,  a cold, influenza caused by a viral infection.

However, group A streptococcus has been found to cause strep throat, which can be treated by antibiotics.

Although it is not common, some cases of a sore throat also are caused by scratchiness in the throat and in people with difficulty swallowing due to reduced circular and longitudinal muscles occurred in the walls of the pharynx.

The time to recover from a sore throat is totally depending on the underlying causes. Most cases of a sore throat can be recovered within 1 week, depending on each individual health status.

Conventionally, treatment of a sore throat is to reduce pain with over accouter medicines and let the condition to run its course.

Some researchers suggested that for a speedy recovery from the viral infection-induced sore throat, patients should drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration,  eat warm broth gargling with warm salt water and use a humidifier during the course of the condition.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine for the treatment of dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of pharyngitis, an inflammatory condition of the pharynx and associated structures commonly caused by the Group A streptococci (GAS) examined the anti-inflammatory activity of phytochemical-rich extracts prepared from 12 herbal plants using human tonsil epithelial cells (HTonEpiC) in vitro.

The study included HTonEpiC induced by a mixture of lipoteichoic acid (LTA) and peptidoglycan (PGN) (10 µg/mL; bacterial antigens) for 4 h and then exposed to ethanol extracts (EE) or aqueous extracts (AE) including the composition of danshen root, clove, ginger, and echinacea for 20 h.

The extracts exhibited a broad range of reduction of proteins and antimicrobial peptides associated with inflammatory production, including interleukin-8 (IL-8), human beta-defensin-2 (HBD-2).

Further analysis also suggested that both EE and AE of clove, ginger, and Echinacea flower and EE from danshen root significantly inhibited the pro-inflammatory cytokine production.
,
Dr. Wijesundara NM, the lead scientist, after taking into account of co and confounders, wrote, "The most efficacious extracts from the danshen root, clove, ginger and echinacea flowers have potential to be used as natural sources for developing phytotherapeutic products in the management of painful inflammation due to streptococcal pharyngitis".

Moreover, in order to reveal more information ginger anti-inflammatory activity, researchers evaluated the essential oils (EOs) extracted from oregano, sage, cloves, and ginger for the phytochemical profile, antibacterial, and anti-biofilm activities against Streptococcus pyogenes.

The microscopic visualization of biofilms treated with EOs have shown morphological and density changes compared to the untreated control.

Compared to the efficacy of oregano, sage in the anti-biofilm agent with dual actions, ginger exerted insignificant activity against antibacterial, and anti-biofilm activities against Streptococcus pyogenes.

Base on the results, ginger may be used combined with other herbal medicine for the treatment of pharyngitis, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Whole Food Tomatoes, the Best Antioxidant Functional Food

By Kyle J. Norton

Antioxidants are stable atom that plays a critical role in protecting the body against the attack of free radicals.

In other words, antioxidant inhibited the onset of free radical before they can cause a chain reaction in facilitating the protein, lipid and cell damage.

Antioxidants can either produced by the liver or intake from dietary sources. Under normal condition, antioxidant enzymes produced by the body in a healthy individual are good enough to counter the bombardment of free radical attacks.

However, in people with the weakened immune system, intake dietary sources of antioxidants may be necessary.

There are 3 main types of antioxidants found in nature, including
* Antioxidant enzymes produced by the host, including superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, and catalases.

* Antioxidants vitamins, that may be injected from the dietary sources such as fruits and vegetables, including vitamin A, C, D, and E. Most antioxidant vitamin are considered free radical scavengers that gobble up free radicals before they can induce a cascade of damage.

Antioxidant Phytochemicals found in the plant inclduing second metabolites.

Antioxidants keep our body functioning properly by reducing the risk of diseases associated with oxidative stress.

Dr. Esra Birben, the lead scientist in the evaluation of oxidative stress and antioxidant defense wrote, "Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are produced by living organisms as a result of normal cellular metabolism and environmental factors, such as air pollutants or cigarette smoke. ROS are highly reactive molecules and can damage cell structures such as carbohydrates, nucleic acids, lipids, and proteins and alter their functions. The shift in the balance between oxidants and antioxidants in favor of oxidants is termed “oxidative stress".

And, "Aerobic organisms have integrated antioxidant systems, which include enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidants that are usually effective in blocking the harmful effects of ROS. However, in pathological conditions, the antioxidant systems can be overwhelmed. Oxidative stress contributes to many pathological conditions and diseases, including cancer, neurological disorders, atherosclerosis, hypertension, ischemia/perfusion, diabetes, acute respiratory distress syndrome, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and asthma".

In other words, we can say goodbye to the diseases involved in oxidative stress by maintaining the proper ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body.

Tomato is red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belonging to family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient with best antioxidant activity, researchers compared the parental line, for antioxidant levels in fresh and hot break fruit, and the bioaccessibility of antioxidants from the puree.

Believe it or not, there are Different found in the concentrations of antioxidants between the wild-type and the genetically modified raw tomatoes.

However, compared to the parent of BM tomatoes, GM tomatoes were found to maintain antioxidant levels to a greater extent in the puree and in vitro digestion model, the levels of antioxidants were showed an increase in the genetically modified samples, according to the bioaccessibility of the analysis of the compounds.

Although researchers found that GM tomatoes processed similar or better antioxidant levels compared to the parent, they do not mention a possibility of toxicity of the genetically modified samples.

In vivo, the antioxidant activity of several types of tomato taken from the Andean valleys was tested on Caenorhabditis elegans subjected to thermal stress, researchers found the metabolite composition of tomatoes are totally depending to the geographical origin and fruit size.

The antioxidant activity of tomatoes is also depending on the phenolic compounds, such as caffeoylquinic acids, ferulic acid-O-hexosides, and rutin which associated with the fruit size, and geographical origin.

The findings suggested that all tomatoes process different levels of phytochemicals that may affect the antioxidant properties, depending on the size and types.

Taken altogether, tomatoes processed abundantly bioactive compounds may be considered an antioxidant supplement against oxidative stress, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Artichoke Normalizes the Blood Cholesterol with No Side Effects in Human Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Cholesterol produced by the liver is needed for the cell to build strong membrane, to produce steroid hormone, bile acids, and vitamin D and aid the digestive functioning.

Most people with high blood cholesterol at the early do not experience any symptoms, however, as the levels of blood cholesterol continue to grow, at some points, patients may experience heart-related symptoms, including chest pain or angina, pain while walking caused by reduced blood flow to the legs.

In serious cases, elevated blood cholesterol can also induce symptoms of stroke and heart attack.

Epidemiological studies suggested that a high level of blood cholesterol is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

Besides high-fat diet, certain risk factors such as the family history of high cholesterol, being overweight or obese,  physical inactivity, excessive alcohol intake, smoking and some health conditions including diabetes, kidney disease, and liver disease have been found to increase the risk of high blood cholesterol.

There are 2 types of blood cholesterol
* Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) also is known as “bad cholesterol”. Bad cholesterol is a major cause of plaque build up in the arteries if it presents at a high level.

*High-density lipoprotein (HDL) is known as “good cholesterol”. HDL  helps remove LDL cholesterol from your arteries back to the liver.

The healthy ratio of blood cholesterol is 4 LDL)/ 1HLD

Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a liver protective and detoxified agent, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.

Searching the list of combined nutraceuticals for the treatment of high blood cholesterol, researchers examined the effects of a combination of nutraceuticals based on artichoke, red yeast rice, banana, and coenzyme Q10.

The double bind, cross-over designed trial versus placebo included 30 adults with LDL cholesterol suboptimal in primary prevention of cardiovascular disease.

After a period of 3 weeks of dietary habits correction, patients began a period of 6 weeks of treatment with nutraceutical or placebo, followed by 2 weeks of washout and finally 6 weeks in cross-over.

The combination showed a significant improvement in total cholesterol (-13.6 %), LDL-C (-18.2 %), non-HDL-C (-15 %).

Levels of markers associated with liver damage and protein associated with liver inflammation also reduced by the injection of a dietary supplement, compared to placebo.

Dr. Cicero AF said, "The tested combination of nutraceuticals has shown clinical efficacy in the reduction of total cholesterol, non-HDL, LDL and triglycerides while improving the level of liver transaminases and high sensitivity C-reactive protein".

In order to reveal more information about artichoke anti-high blood cholesterol activity, researchers review selected studies according to the standard guideline and criteria by searching the databases of medical literature.

The review of the meta-analysis of data from 9 trials including 702 subjects suggested that artichoke has a strong effect in decreasing plasma concentrations of total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides.

Application of artichoke has no effect on high-density lipoprotein concentration.

In other words, artichoke extract only had a significant reduction in both total and LDL-C, and triglycerides.

Taken altogether, artichoke may be considered a functional and herbal remedy for the treatment of high blood cholesterol with no side effects, pending to the confirmation of larger sample sized and multicenter human study.

Herbal Bilberry, the Natural Treatment of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)

By Kyle J. Norton

Inflammatory bowel disease is a general condition used to descript the disorders associated with the chronic inflammation of the digestive tract.

Inflammatory bowel disease can be classified into 2 types
* Ulcerative colitis caused by the inflammation and sores (ulcers) in the innermost lining of the large intestine and rectum.

* Crohn's disease associated with inflammation of the lining of the digestive tract other than the bowel and rectum.

Most common symptoms of IBD include vomiting, fever, night sweats, loss of appetite, general weakness, and waves of abdominal pain and discomfort.

If you experience persistently the aforementioned symptoms, you may have IBD, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

The exact causes of IBD are unknown. However, researchers do know that aging, personal and family history, ethnicity, smoking and long-term stress are some prevalent factors that initiate the onset of the disease.

In the examined the unhealthy diet in risk of IBD, Dr. Mariabeatrice Principi, the lead scientist wrote, "IBD patients ate more calories (1970.7±348.4 vs. 1882.1±280.2 kcal/day, P=0.03), more lipids (68.9±15.2 vs. 59.4±19.0 g/day, P<0.001) and less fibers (11.9±4.7 vs. 15.5±8.3 g/day, P<0.001) than controls. No significant difference in total calories, proteins, lipids, carbohydrates or fibers was seen between CD and UC patients".

The findings strongly suggested if you are Western diet follower, you are at a higher risk of IBD developing.

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

Scientists on finding a potential compound for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) caused by dysregulation of the mucosal immune system, examined the potential of commonly used polyphenols found in bilberry on IBD.

Injection of dietary polyphenols showed significantly protective and therapeutic effects in the management of IBD by mediating the production of proinflammatory cytokines,  suppressing inflammatory pathways and cellular signaling mechanisms.

Treatment of dietary polyphenols also enhanced the antioxidant defense, by inhibiting the overexpression of free radicals in patients with IBD.

Taken altogether, bilberry processed abundantly bioactive compounds polyphenols may be considered a functioning remedy for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Whole Food Honey, the Best for the Prevention and treatment of Chronic Ulcers

By Kyle J. Norton

Chronic ulcers are a medical condition in which the infected and tissue damage of areas with skin loss that take a long time to heal. In some people, the opened wound has no tendency to heal themselves.

There are many causes of chronic ulcers. However, some researchers suggested that disease associated with prolonged high pressures in the veins of the leg with the open wound, as a result, involved abnormalities at different locations in the venous system.

Aging, family history, diseases associated with arteries, occupation associated with standing for long periods of time, being overweight or obese and inactivity are some of the most common risk factors that increase the risk of chronic ulcers.

Most patients with chronic ulcer experience symptoms of swelling, heat, and inflammation and pain in the affected area, and brown pigmentation of the skin near the ankles. If you have some of the aforementioned problems, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

Some researchers suggested chronic ulcer risk has also been associated with people who smoke.

Dr. Jodi C. McDaniel, in the examination of smokers in the risk of chronic ulcers, wrote, "Evidence-based guidelines for treating venous leg ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, and pressure ulcers, the 3 main categories of chronic wounds, focus primarily on biologic therapies".

And, "However, there are also evidence-based guidelines for treating behavioral risks to poor healing, such as smoking, which should be incorporated into treatment plans when appropriate"
Honey, the rich golden liquid is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The liquid is considered one of the healthy food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

With an aim to find a natural therapy for the treatment of chronic ulcer with no side effects, researchers investigated the use of medical honey on healing times and complications in patients with venous leg ulcers after split-skin grafting.

The study included 6 patients with chronic venous leg ulcers who underwent split-skin grafting followed by the application of medical honey at the vascular unit of University Hospital Aintree in Liverpool.

According to the results, the healing time was 22 days with no complications.

In order to reveal more information about honey anti chronic ulcer property, researchers assessed the powder formulation for the delivery of manuka honey (MH) bioactive components and platelet lysate (PL) in chronic skin ulcers.

Two different fractions of MH were included in the study: one (Fr1), rich in methylglyoxal and the other (Fr2), rich in polyphenols.

Particles were loaded with Fr1, fraction enhance the proliferation of human fibroblasts.

Furthermore, Fr1-loaded particles markedly increased wound healing to the same extent compared to other groups.

Taken altogether, honey may be considered functional remedies for the treatment of chronic ulcers with no side effects, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Bioactive Compound Betanin Kills Chronic Myeloid Leukemia Cells in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Chronic myeloid leukemia  (CML) is a medical condition associated with the overgrowth of immature cells started in the blood-forming cells of the bone marrow.

In other words, compared to normal cells which will die after a limited cell division, chronic myeloid leukemia cells continue to divide with no meaning of dying or stopping, leading to proliferation that affects other healthy cells in the bone marrow.

At the advanced stage, chronic myeloid leukemia cell can leak to the bloodstream, leading to secondary metastasis, depending on the infected tissues and organ.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2019, approximately, 8,990 new cases will be diagnosed with CML (5,250 in men and 3,740 in women. and CML is expected to cause the death of 1,140 people including 660 men and 480 women.

More precisely, CML accounts for 15% of all cases of leukemia diagnosed each year. In other words, the lifetime risk of CML in the US is 1 person in 526.

The 5-year survival rate of patients treated with chemo drug imatinib (Gleevec®) including all stages of CML is 90%.

Although the increased with age and male gender are 2 of factors involved in the onset of the condition, some researchers suggested genetic proposition also plays a critical role in increasing risk
of CML.

The Bethesda (MD): National Center for Biotechnology Information (US); 1998, wrote in the book of "Genes and Disease", "A mouse model has been created that develops a CML-like disease when given bone marrow cells infected with a virus containing the BCR-ABL gene. In other animal models, the fusion proteins have been shown to transform normal blood precursor cells to malignant cells".

And, "To research the human disease, antisense oligomers (short DNA segments) that block BCR-ABL were developed that specifically suppressed the formation of leukemic cells while not affecting the normal bone marrow cell development. These and other experimental techniques may lead to future treatments for CML".

The findings suggested that people with certain gene mutation are prone to the development of CML compared to those do not.

Betanin is Phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of Betacyanins, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.

In the urgency to find natural ingredients for the treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia, researchers investigated the antiproliferative effects of betanin, a principle betacyanin pigment, on the human chronic myeloid leukemia cell line (K562).

Administration of betanin decreased the proliferation of K562 cells with an IC(50) of 40 microM in a dose and time-dependent manner.

According to the scanning and transmission electron microscopy, betanin induced cancer cell death by the pro-apoptotic characteristics of chromatin condensation, cell shrinkage and membrane blebbing.

Chronic myeloid leukemia cell line (K562) treated by betanin also showed fragmentation pattern typical for apoptotic cells.

Observed by the flow cytometric analysis, cancer cells treated with 40 microM of betanin showed 28.4% of cells in sub G0/G1 phase, an indication of cell cycle arrest.

According to the confocal microscopic studies, betanin inhibited the expression of the chronic myeloid leukemia cell line (K562)by gaining entry directly into the cells.

Based on the finding, researchers suggested that betanin induced chronic myeloid leukemia cell line (K562) death within the cell such as inducing the release of cytochrome c from mitochondria into the cytosol.

Taken altogether, betanin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
