Herbal Turmeric, he Natural Prevention and Treatment of Type 2 Diabetes

By Kyle J. Norton

Type II diabetes is an acquired chronic and medical condition caused by insufficiency of insulin entering the bloodstream, leading to abnormally high blood glucose.

In other words, type II diabetes developing is due to the pancreas not producing enough insulin caused by the loss of beta cells or the body does not properly use the insulin it makes as a result of insulin receptor sites clogged up by fat or cholesterol.

Although type II diabetes is a disease associated with adult-onset, today, the condition has been diagnosed in children with an alarming rate due to childhood obesity.

Most common symptoms of type II diabetes are increased thirst, frequent urination, unintended weight loss, fatigue.

In severe cases, patients with type II diabetes also experience symptoms of slow-healing sores, frequent infections, blurred vision.

Untreated type II diabetes may induce complications of diabetic retinopathy, kidney disease (nephropathy), diabetic neuropathy, and macrovascular problems.

As of today, there is no single cause and cure for type 2 diabetes. However, researchers suggested overweight, family history, aging, race and medical conditions of prediabetes and gestational diabetes are some prevalent factors associated with the increased risk of the disease.c

Some researchers suggested that type 2 diabetes may be correlated to the promotion of the Western diet over the past few decades.

Dr. David Hefner in the article "Western Diet Linked to Type 2 Diabetes", wrote, "The typical Western diet-red meat, high-fat dairy products, refined grains, and desserts-may increase your chances for Type 2 diabetes".

And, "The news isn't particularly shocking but offers a new view on the health risks of a typical Western diet as a whole, rather than simply attacking elements within the diet such as fatty foods".

In other words, if you are following the high-fat diet, you are at a higher risk of type II diabetes. is

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

In the urgency to find a potential ingredient for the treatment of diabetes, researchers examined the effect of Curcumin (CUR; diferuloylmethane) in the increased oxidative stress and the proinflammatory state that contributes to the development and progression of the diseases.

Oxidative stress is an imbalance between the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and their clearance by antioxidant defense mechanisms.

Curcumin improved the function of hepatic glucose and lipid metabolism which was dysfunctioned in patients with T2DM.

In vitro, curcumin was found to induce the liver protective effect in the regulation of glucose and lipid metabolism.

Furthermore, curcumin exerted antidiabetic potential by ameliorating skeletal muscle insulin resistance in rodents with diet-induced insulin resistance via an increase of the uptake and oxidation of fatty acids.

Moreover, curcumin also found to improve insulin sensitivity in muscle tissue of insulin-resistant rodents by an increase of the cellular glucose uptake by enhancing the GLUT4 translocation.

In adipose tissue analysis, curcumin protected the adipose tissue function, by protecting the normal adipokine production, FFA release and preventing inflammation, that is associated with the pathogenesis of T2DM.

In pancreatic β-cells differentiation, curcumin enhanced the pancreatic β-cell function under diabetic conditions.

On metabolic dysfunction, curcumin improved the glycemic status and insulin sensitivity demonstrated in high-fat-diet- (HFD-) fed C57BL/6J mice and C57BL/6J ob/ob mice.

More recently, curcumin exerted a positive effect of CUR on metabolic abnormalities associated with T2DM have been confirmed in high-fructose-fed Wistar rats by attenuating insulin resistance and glucose intolerance through its antioxidative and anti-inflammatory actions

Taken altogether, turmeric processed a high amount of bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of type II diabetes, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Bilberry, Protects the Elderly Vision Against the Initiation of Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

By Kyle J. Norton

Age-related macular degeneration is a medical condition which causes irreversible blurring of the central vision in people over age 60.

Elderly at the early stage of age-related macular degeneration is asymptomatic. However, some patients may experience symptoms of slightly blurred central vision. Most cases of the early stage of AMD were diagnosed during routine eye health examinations.

Over time, age-related macular degeneration may affect the vision including the reading as the blurred area increased in size.

The advanced age-related macular degeneration has been found to induce irreversible blindness and visual impairment, according to the epidemiological studies.

According to statistics, approximately 11 million people in the US have some form of age-related macular degeneration. The risk of getting advanced age-related macular degeneration increases from 2% for those ages 50-59 to nearly 30% for those over the age of 75.

Age-related macular degeneration can be classified into 2 types
* The common AMD is the dry form caused by the gradual degeneration of the central retinal tissues, affecting 90% of patient s with AMD.  Some patients with the dry form of AMD have been found to develop into the wet form over time.

* The wet form of AMD is caused the breaking of capillary under the macula, accounting only 10% of AMD.

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant berry has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

In the urgency to find a natural compound for the treatment of age-related macular degeneration found in a large number of elderly, researchers evaluated the efficacy of a drug containing lutein 6 mg, zeaxanthin 0.5 mg, vitamin C 60 mg, vitamin E 7 mg, vitamin A 1.5 mg, vitamin B2 1.2 mg, rutin 25 mg, zinc 5 mg, Selenium 25 mcg, and bilberry extract 60 mg with Ginkgo biloba leaf extract 60 mg on the retina in type 2 diabetes patients with diabetic retinopathy (DR) and those with combined fundus pathology (DR plus age-related macular degeneration (AMD))

The study included 180 patients (180 eyes) with type 2 diabetes divided into 6 groups of 30 each. DR was graded according to E. Kohner and M. Porta classification, AMD--AREDS classification.

group 1 consisted of patients with DRO,; group 2--DR1 without DM, group 3--DR1 with DM, group 4--DRO and "dry" AMD (AREDS 1-3), group 5--DR1 with no DM but with AMD (AREDS 1-3), and group 6--DR1 with DM and AMD (AREDS 1-3).

Treatment with antioxidant and angioprotective agents has been proven effective in type 2 diabetes patients with preclinical (DRO) and early (DR1) diabetic retinopathy and those with DR and "dry" AMD (AREDS 1-3) in terms of functional and morphological parameters of the retina.

However, a combined antioxidant and double-dose angioprotective (240 mg) therapy appeared to be the most effective compared to those of single treatment.

Futhermore, in the investigation of bilberry's flavonoids, the potent antioxidants, scavenging free radicals for the treatment of multiple age-related ocular disorders.

According to the results of from 1.5 to 3 month OXYS rats given control diets or those supplemented with 25% bilberry extract (BE, 20 mg on kg of body weight including 4.5 mg of anthocyanidin) or vitamin E (40 mg/kg) as a drag for comparison, 3 months BE treatment reversed the cataract and macular degeneration and completely prevented impairments in the lenses and retin, compared to no significant effects of vitamin E.

Furthermore, both BE and VE were found to decrease lipid peroxides in the retina and serum of OXYS rats.

Based on the findings, Dr. Fursova AZh, the lead scientist said, "The results suggest that the OXYS rat strain is the useful model for macular degeneration and senile cataract and long-term supplementation with BE is effective in the prevention of macular degeneration and cataract".

Taken altogether, bilberry processed abundantly bioactive compound anthocyanoside may be considered a functioning remedy for the prevention and treatment of age-related macular degeneration, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

The Phytochemical cucurbitacin B isolated from Cucumber Improves Chemotherapy on Laryngeal Cancer

By Kyle J. Norton

Laryngeal cancer is a medical condition characterized by abnormal cell growth in the tissues of the larynx due to the alternation of cells DNA.

Larynx, also known as the voice box is a tube above the windpipe (trachea) in the neck and in front of the food pipe.

Most cases of laryngeal cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the larynx, before penetrating into the deeper layers to form a tumor.

At the very early of cell alternation, patients are asymptomatic. However, as the tumor continues to grow, the cancer cell may infect other healthy tissues a distance away through the blood and fluids distribution.

Laryngeal cancer shares the general symptoms with other cancer including unintended pain, weight loss, loss of appetite, fatigue and gastrointestinal discomforts accompanied by specific symptoms of a lump or swelling in your neck. a long-lasting cough,  a persistent sore throat or earache and difficulty breathing. in severe cases.

Sometimes, patients may vomit blood due to the oversize tumor which has pressed on the nearby blood vessels.

Out of many prevalent risk factors, smoking tobacco (cigarettes, pipes, cigars) is considered a major culprit that increases the risk of developing laryngeal cancer in the Western world.
Dr. A Altieri, the lead scientist wrote, "Cancer of the larynx is extremely rare in individuals who neither smoke nor drink alcohol (Austin and Reynolds, 1996). The risk rises with increasing levels of smoking and drinking, each agent approximately multiplying the effects of the other (Elwood et al, 1984; Blot, 1992; Dosemeci et al, 1997; Talamini et al, 2002). The risk of laryngeal cancer is 10–20-fold higher in current smokers than in non-smokers".

The cucumber plant is a species of Cucumis Sativus, belongs to the family Cucurbitaceae and native to Western Asia. It is a creeping vine with roots in the ground and grows up with the support of frames.

With an aim to find potential and natural chemotherapy for the treatment of laryngeal cancer, researchers examined whether cucurbitacin B can also enhance the sensitivity of Hep-2 laryngeal cells to cisplatin.

The study included the evaluation of the proliferation, cell cycle distribution, and apoptosis in Hep-2 cells treated with either cucurbitacin B, cisplatin, or the combination.

According to the tested results, Hep-2 cells treated with a cucurbitacin B/cisplatin combination display synergistic effects on growth inhibition, cell cycle arrest, and apoptosis induction, compared to single-agent cucurbitacin B or cisplatin-treated cells.

Moreover, Hep-2 cell lines treated with the cucurbitacin B/cisplatin combination demonstrated a significantly reduced level of p-Stat3, compared to single agent treated cells.

Where overexpression of p-STAT3 is an indication of a poor prognosis biomarker in cancer.

Additionally, cucurbitacin B/cisplatin-treated Hep-2 cells also demonstrated a significant reduction of the protein associated with regulation in the cell cycle and anti-apoptosis, compared to single-agent cucurbitacin B or cisplatin-treated cells.

Based on the results, researchers said, " these results suggest that the cucurbitacin B/cisplatin combination treatment may be a potentially useful therapeutic option for individuals diagnosed with laryngeal cancer".

In order to reveal more information about cucumber anti laryngeal cancer property, scientists evaluated the combined antitumor effect of cucurbitacin B with docetaxel on Hep-2, a human laryngeal cancer cell line.

The combination of cucurbitacin B and docetaxel produced greater efficacy in growth inhibition, cell cycle arrest at the G2/M phase, and apoptosis induction similar to those of the aforementioned study compared to single agent treatment.

The efficacy of the combined effect of cucurbitacin B and docetaxel anti-Hep-2 was attributed to the suppression of the expression of proteins involved in the tumor proliferation and migration.

In vivo, the combination of cucurbitacin B with docetaxel also synergestively inhibited tumor growth in a mouse xenograft model.

Taken altogether, cucumber processed a high amount of cucurbitacin B  may be considered supplements combined with conventional medicine for the treatment of laryngeal cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of cucurbitacin B  in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Bromelain Inhibits Cancer Initiation and Progression in Vitro and Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of chronic and medical conditions caused by the alternation of cell DNA.

Most cases of cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of specific tissues and organs.

At the early stage due to the very small size of the tumor, most cancers are asymptomatic. However, at the advanced stage, cancer only can induce general symptoms such as gastrointestinal discomfort, unintended weight loss, fatigue, and loss but also lead to specific symptoms, such as localized bleeding and pain, depending to the location of cancer.

Also, at this stage, primary cancer cells can travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy tissues and organ, leading to secondary metastasis through the circulation of blood and fluids.

According to the statistic provided by the American Cancer Society, in the US 2019, approximately 1,762,450 new cancer cases will be diagnosed and 606,880 deaths are results of cancer.

Furthermore, in age perspective, older adults although are accounted for only 8% of all cases diagnosed in the US, they have a 17% mortality rate compared to other age groups.

The 5 years survival rate is totally depending on the stage of cancer diagnosed. The early diagnosed stage has the highest survival rate compared to other later stages.

Many risk factors such as aging, tobacco, sun exposure, toxic exposure, viruses and bacteria, use hormone therapy, family history of cancer, alcohol, poor diet, lack of physical activity, or being overweight have been found to increase the risk of cancer, epidemiologically.

However, most people with some of the aforementioned risk factors have never developed cancer.

Some researchers in the examination of the risk of obesity in risk cancer wrote, "The prevalence of overweight and obesity is increasing worldwide, and the evidence base for a link between obesity and cancer is growing... Recent research has found that as the body mass index increases by 5 kg/m2, cancer mortality increases by 10%".

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.

The research team at the University of Oxford on finding a potential compound for the treatment of cancer with no side effects examined the bromelain capacity against cancers in the past and present studies.

Evidence derived from clinical observations, mouse- and cell-based models suggested that bromelain, a 95%-mixture of proteases acts systemically, affecting multiple cellular and molecular targets.

The most recent study found that bromelain has the capacity to inhibit cell malignancy by modulating the key pathways associated with cell differentiation.

Other studies suggested the anti-cancer activity of bromelain consists of the direct impact on cancer cells and their microenvironment by modulating immune, inflammatory and hemostatic systems.

Additonally, in the study to reaffirm the use of bromelain (BL) as an anti-cancer phytotherapeutic agent, researchers examined Oral administration of bromelain (BL) in anti-cancer drugs encapsulated in Poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) to formulate nanoparticles (NPs).

NPs enhanced the function of cytotoxicity in the induction of cancer cell death in significant dose advantage (-7-10 folds) that reduces the IC50 values, compared to free BL.

NPs induced cellular uptake of MCF-7, HeLa and Caco-2 cells monolayer by several folds compared to free BL.

NPs also modulated the expression of marker proteins associated with apoptosis and cell death and suppression (P53, P21, Bcl2, Bax).

Furthermore, in Swiss albino mice, NPs injection not only reduced the tumor burden of Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC) but also increased their life-span (160.0 ± 5.8%) compared to free BL.

In other words, NPs enhanced anti-carcinogenic potential through a number of mechanisms, including the generation of reactive oxygen species, induction of apoptosis and impaired mitochondrial membrane potential.

Taken altogether, bromelain used alone or encapsulated in Poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of bromelain in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Whole Food Tomato Protects the Tissues of Stomach Against Gastric Injury

By Kyle J. Norton

Gastrointestinal injury is an injury associated with the stomach, small bowel, colon, or rectum.

In other words, any damage to the organs of the digestive system caused by blunt or penetrating trauma is considered gastrointestinal injury.

Gastrointestinal injury caused by blunt trauma in children is uncommon, accounting less 1% of all gastrointestinal injury.

Believe it or not, in children, most common causes of gastrointestinal injury are caused by a discrete point of energy transfer such as a seatbelt (19%), a handlebar (13%), or a blow from abuse (19%), or other blows and is unique to this population, according to the Children's Hospital.

Depending on the organs damage, patients may experience different symptoms.

In small intestinal injury, patients may have symptoms of pain closed to the injured bowel segment, abdominal distension, and diarrhea, ileus, diffuse abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting.

In large intestinal injury, patients may have symptoms of persistent focal pain in a trocar site with abdominal distention, diarrhea, and leukopenia.

In gastric/stomach injury, patients may first experience symptoms of nausea, vomiting, blood in the urine, and fever, following by abdominal pain, tenderness, distension, or rigidity.

In rectal injury, patients may have symptoms of rectal itching, pain, and rectal bleeding.

Tomato is red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belongings to family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.

On findings a potential ingredient for the prevention and treatment of gastrointestinal injury, researchers investigated the transgenic mini-tomato and protection against alcohol-induced gastrointestinal injury.

By examining the function of the epidermal growth factor (EGF) in maintaining the physiological function of the mucosa of the digestive tract, and to promote the healing of the gastric and duodenal ulcers, researchers chemically synthesized a tomato codon preference hEGF gene by Agrobacterium-mediated transformation.

Where Epidermal growth factor (EGF) has been found to play an essential role in wound healing by stimulating epidermal and dermal regeneration.

According to the radioimmunoassay (RIA),15 days of intragastric gavage (ig) administration of the rhEGF-containing juice of the transgenic tomato could significantly protect mice against the alcohol-induced ulceration.

The Ulcer index expressed as a degree of the stomach lesion, also decreased from 42.20 +/- 18.13 to 16.25 +/- 9.57.

In other words, the transgenic tomato protects the integrity of the stomach cell against the insults of excessive alcohol consumption that damage the stomach lining tissues and speeds up ulcer healing

Taken altogether, tomato with rhEGF may be considered a dietary supplements for the prevention and treatment of gastrointestinal injury, pending to large sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Bilberry Effects On Locomotion In Patients with Neurodegenerative Disease

By Kyle J. Norton

Locomotion is the ability to move from place to the other. In human, locomotion controlled by the cerebellum is a complex process that requires the integration of central and peripheral nervous signaling coordinated by the muscles.

In other words, every time you move any part of the body, the cerebellum fires into action.

Damage of cerebellum of the brain has been found to induce difficulty with balance, coordination, and fine motor skills in patients.

Besides neurodegenerative diseases, alcohol abuse, certain medications, stroke, tumor, cerebral palsy, brain degeneration, and multiple sclerosis are the most common risk factors which can affect the brain locomotion control.

In conventional medicine, depending on the causes that affect the locomotion, adaptive devices may be introduced to maintain independence. Other therapies such as physical, occupational and speech therapy with moderate exercise have been found to be helpful.

On finding a potential compound for the improvement of locomotion in patients with neurodegenerative disease, researchers examined the possible effects of prolonged administration of lyophilized Vaccinium berries (blueberry, bilberry) on cognitive performance against the incidence of degenerative disorders.

Mice selected to the study were observed by step-down inhibitory avoidance, open field, elevated plus-maze, and radial maze tasks. The lyophilized berries were administered for 30 days before the first training.

According to the tested assays, lyophilized berries significantly enhanced locomotion by increasing the number of crossings in the first exposure to the open field.

Additionally, short term treatment with lyophilized berries also improves rat performance on the elevated plus-maze task.

In other words,  lyophilized berries inhibited the neuro deficits associated with inactivity behavior such as anxiety.

Taken altogether, bilberry processed abundantly bioactive compound anthocyanoside may be considered a functioning remedy for the improvement of locomotion in patients with neurodegenerative diseases, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Phytochemical Alliin Protects the Heart and Blood Vessels Against Hypertension

By Kyle J. Norton

Hypertension, found in the cluster of metabolic syndrome is a medical condition associated with abnormally high blood pressure.

Blood pressure change constantly depending on the activity. Persistent hypertension over time can lead to diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

It also is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood.

According to the statistics provided by the American Heart Association., approximately103 million U.S. adults are living with high blood pressure, accounting to nearly half of all adults in the United States.

Conventionally, blood pressure medications have been found to prevent many deaths from heart disease and stroke over the past 30 years, however, long-term intake of such medications have caused many side effects such as damaging the kidney.

Epidemiologically, family history, aging, being male, being overweight or obese, ethnicity, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet and people with chronic kidney disease are some common risk factors involved in the increased risk of hypertension.

Believe or not, excessive alcohol drinking is also one of the major causes besides obesity in elevating the syndrome onset.

Dr. Kazim Husain wrote, "Several possible mechanisms have been proposed such as an imbalance of the central nervous system, impairment of the baroreceptors, enhanced sympathetic activity, stimulation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, increased cortisol levels, increased vascular reactivity due to increase in intracellular calcium levels, stimulation of the endothelium to release vasoconstrictors and loss of relaxation due to inflammation and oxidative injury of the endothelium leading to inhibition of endothelium-dependent nitric oxide production".

And, "Loss of relaxation due to inflammation and oxidative injury of the endothelium by angiotensin II leading to inhibition of endothelium-dependent nitric oxide production is the major contributors of alcohol-induced hypertension".

In fact, by making changes to lifestyle, maintaining ideal weight and diet with low salt, you could do just fine without the drugs.

Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide, a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belongings to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of hypertension, researchers examined the effect of Lichtwer garlic powder (containing 1.3% alliin equivalent to 0.6% allicin) in rats fed with a high cholesterol diet.

The study carried out with rats fed a 2% high cholesterol diet with and without garlic powder and control rats were fed a normal diet for 6 weeks daily.

Rats treated with high cholesterol diet had a significantly higher blood pressure compared to the animals receiving the control diet.

Compared to the high cholesterol and control diet group, the blood pressure of the animals receiving garlic powder was significantly lower without changing the levels of serum glucose and protein in all of the rats.
