Herbal Cascara Sagrada (Rhamnus purshiana), The Best for the Prevention and Treatment of Liver cancer

By Kyle J. Norton

Herbal Cascara sagrada processed a bioactive compound emodin may have a significant and potential effect in reducing the risk and treatment of liver cancer, according to studies.

Liver cancer is a medical and chronic condition caused by irregular cell growth in the liver tissues, due to the alternation of cell DNA.

The liver organ is one of the organs with a lack of nerve tissue, therefore liver cancer does not induce pain until the later stage.

At the advanced stage of liver cancer, the cancer cell may travel a distance away to infect other tissues and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.

According to the statistics provided by the Canadian Cancer Society, every year, approximately, 1,900 men and 580 women are diagnosed with liver cancer, causing the death of 950 men and 270 women.

In 2017, 2,500 Canadians were diagnosed with liver cancer and 1,200 Canadians died from liver cancer.

Compared to the early stage of other cancer, the 5 years survival rate in the early stage diagnosis is only 31% and 43% of people with liver cancer diagnosed at stage 0 and 1.

The exact causes of liver cancer are unknown. Hoever, chronic infection with hepatitis virus, cirrhosis, gentic preposition, a medical condition of diabetes, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and excessive alcohol consumption are some of the most prevalent risk factors of liver cancer, epidemiologically.

Dr. Chuang SC, the lead scientist in the concern of excessive alcohol drinking in risk of liver cancer, wrote, "Compared to individuals who never drank or drank at very low frequencies, the meta-relative risk (mRR) forever drinkers was 1.29 (95% confidence interval, CI 1.16-1.42) and 1.46 (95% CI 1.27-1.65) for case-control studies".

And, "The dose-response relation between alcohol and liver cancer was apparent with RR = 1.08 (95% CI 1.04-1.11) for 12 g/day (~1 drink), 1.54 (95% CI 1.36-1.74) for 50 g/day, 2.14 (95% CI 1.74-2.62) for 75 g/day, 3.21 (95% CI 2.34-4.40) for 100 g/day, and 5.20 (95% CI 3.25-8.29) for 125 g/day of alcohol consumption".

The finding clearly suggested, one alcoholic drink per day (~12 g/day) may be associated with 1.1 times higher liver cancer risk and risk of liver cancer increases proportionally to the volume intake per day.

Cascara sagrada is a species of buckthorn, genus Rhamnus, belonging to the family Rhamnaceae, native to western North America. The herbal bark has been used in traditional medicine for gastrointestinal support. and it is thought to have a laxative and natural cleansing, etc..

The chemical constituents of Cascara Sagrada include Aloe-emodin, Anthrquinone glycosides (Barbaloin Cascarosides A, B, C and D ChrysaloinFrangul), Chrysophanol, Emodin, Heterodianthrones palmidin A, B, and C, dianthrones, Oxanthrone, Rhein, Tannins, etc.

Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of liver cancer examined the effect of emodin, a bioactive ingredient isolated from herbal Cascara Sagrada against CXCL12-CXCR4 signaling cascade which plays an important role in the process of invasion and metastasis of liver cancer.

Where The CXCL12/CXCR4 axis is a pathway involved in tumor progression, angiogenesis, metastasis, and survival.

Injection of emodin inhibited the expression of CXCR4 in a dose-and time-dependent manner in HCC cells.

Treatment of emodin demonstrated a better effect compared to the pharmacological proteasome and lysosomal inhibitors on the decrease in CXCR4 expression.

The suppression of CXCR4 expression was attributed to several mechanisms, including the inhibition of cancer cells mRNA expression, a protein associated with cancer cell proliferation and production of antigens by the innate immunity.

Furthermore, emodin treatment significantly suppressed metastasis to the lungs in an orthotopic HCC mice model and CXCR4 expression in tumor tissues.

In other human cancers cell lines, emodin-induced apoptosis in HepG2 cells through cell cycle arrest.

According to the Western blot data, emodin inhibited cancer cell growth through a set of mechanisms, including cell degradation and protein associated with cells death programming.

Moreover, application emodin increased the expression in the initiation of cytotoxicity against HepG2 without causing harm to the nearby healthy cells.

Additionally, emodin increased the protein p53 associated with tumor suppression and decreased the protein involved in cancer cell proliferation in HepG2 cells.

These results suggest that emodin induces apoptosis in liver cancer cell line through a multifaceted complex cascade of events.

Taken altogether, herbal Cascara Sagrada processed a major bioactive compound emodin may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of liver cancer, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Cascara Sagrada, May be Potent Against the Infection of Herpes Simplex Virus, Scientists Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Herbal Cascara Sagrada may process a bioactive compound for the prevention and treatment of Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection, according to studies.

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) belonging to the human Herpesviridae family is a class of virus that cause viral infections in the majority of humans.

The herpes simplex virus (HSV)  is very contagious.

Diseases associated with the infection of herpes simplex viruses 1, including the skin, mouth, lips, eyes, and genitals. In severe cases, the viruses also cause encephalitis, meningitis, neonatal herpes.

HSV-2 usually causes genital lesions.

Ethnicity, gender, increase in age, sex without a condom and people with HIV infection weakened the immune system and are at a higher risk of HSV infection, particularly in people with certain sexual behavior.

Dr. Kalu E, the lead scientist at the Umuahia, Abia State in the concern of the sexual behavior in risk of HSV infection wrote, "Seroprevalence of HSV-2 antibody was 47.3%." and "Sexual behavioral factors that were significantly associated with HSV-2 seroprevalence included early exposure to sexual intercourse, number of sex partners, involvement in polygamous marriages, the involvement of husband in extra-marital affairs and hormonal contraceptive use".

The cross-sectional study design was adopted and the study took place between November 2011 and June 2012 with the participation of 410 consenting ante-natal clinic patients in two major tertiary hospitals in Benin City.

The finding clearly suggested that certain sexual behaviors are associated with the risk of Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV1) infection.

Cascara sagrada is a species of buckthorn, genus Rhamnus, belonging to the family Rhamnaceae, native to western North America, it's bark has been used in traditional medicine for gastrointestinal support. and it is thought to have a laxative and natural cleansing, etc.,

Besides the main compound of anthraquinones, other compounds include anthraquinone glycosides, (emodin, frangulin, iso-emodin, aloe-emodin, and chrysophanol), rhein, aloin, malic acid, tannic acid, cascarosides A, B, C, and D, and hydroxy anthracene derivatives (HAD), etc.

Researchers on the finding a natural product with no side effects for the treatment of Herpes simplex viruses (HSV-1 and -2), in the induction of AIDs, evaluated the effects of emodin, the major compound of Rheum tanguticum and Herbal Cascara Sagrada anti-HSV activity.

Emodin (3-methyl-1,6,8-trihydroxyanthraquinone) use in the study obtained by extracted and purified from herbal medicine.

The study was carried out In Vivo with the HSV-infected mice orally administered with emodin beginning at 24 h post-HSV exposures with dosages of 3.3 g/kg/day, 6.7 g/kg/day, and 11.3 g/kg/day, respectively, for 7 days.

During the experiment, the injection of emodin displayed significant inhibition of the replication of HSV-1 and HSV-2 in cell culture at the concentration of 50 μg/ml with an antiviral index of 2.07 and 3.53, respectively.

Emodin treatment increased the survival rate of HSV-infected mice, prolonged survival time and showed higher efficacy of HSV elimination from brain, heart, liver, and ganglion, compared to the viral controls.

Furthermore, the efficacy of emodin was found to exert a similar inhibition compared to that of conventional medicine, acyclovir.

Dr. Xiong HR and colleagues wrote at the final report, "emodin has the anti-HSV activity in vitro and in vivo and is thus a promising agent in the clinical therapy of HSV infection".

Moreover, in order to reveal more information about the anti-herpes simplex virus activity of emodin, researchers examined the effect of the phytochemical compared to a small group of nucleoside analogs that target the viral polymerase.

Emodin specifically inhibited the nuclease activity of HSV-1 UL12 alkaline nuclease which plays a critical role in viral DNA replication, similar to that of nucleoside analogs, according to the biochemical assay.

Emodin reduced the plaque formation or cell-to-cell spread, with an EC(50) of 21.5+/-4.4 muM, according to the plaque reduction assay.

Additionally, according to the docking analysis, the inhibitory effect of emodin on the UL12 activity also was associated with the interaction between emodin and critical catalytic amino acid residues of UL12 similar to that of nucleoside analogs.

Taken altogether, herbal Cascara Sagrada processed abundantly bioactive compound emodin may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of HSV-1 and -2 infections, pending to the reconfirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Cascara Sagrada, The Natural Treatment for Asthma and Asthmatic Attacks

By Kyle J. Norton

Herbal Cascara Sagrada may have a potential and positive effect on reducing the risk and treatment of asthma, according to studies.

Asthma is a medical condition caused by the long-term inflammation of the airways of the lungs with persistent recurring symptoms.

Most common symptoms of asthma including episodes of wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, particularly, shortness of breath can be triggered by exposure to irritants and allergens.

Other airborne substances, such as pollen, dust mites, mold spores, pet dander or particles of cockroach waste and the common cold are also found to trigger symptoms of the condition.

Epidemiological studies, family history, viral respiratory infections, smoking, exposure to irritants, environment air pollution and allergy are some most common prevalent risk factors of the disease.

However, out of all the risk factors, some researchers suggested that widespread obesity is one of the common cause of asthma in the Western world.

Dr. E. Rand Sutherland, at the National Jewish Medical and Research Center and University of Colorado, said, " Data from the 1999-2002 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) indicate that 65 percent of U.S. adults ≥ 20 years of age are overweight or obese [41], a 10% increase when compared with the 1988-94 period".

And, "Although asthma affects a smaller proportion of the U.S. population than does obesity, and while recent data suggest asthma prevalence may not be increasing as rapidly as in the past, the age-adjusted asthma prevalence of 7.9% reported based on 2005 National Health Interview Survey data [] is more than twice that reported in 1984-1986 National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey data".

These results provided strong evidence in linking the convergence of secular trends of the increased prevalence of both obesity and asthma.

Cascara sagrada is a species of buckthorn, genus Rhamnus, belonging to the family Rhamnaceae, native to western North America.

The herbal bark has been used in traditional medicine for gastrointestinal support. and it is thought to have a laxative and natural cleansing, etc.

Besides the main compound of anthraquinones, other compounds of herbal Cascara Sagrada include anthraquinone glycosides, (emodin, frangulin, iso-emodin, aloe-emodin, and chrysophanol), rhein, aloin, malic acid, tannic acid, cascarosides A, B, C, and D, and hydroxy anthracene derivatives (HAD), etc.

Scientists on finding a natural anti-asthma compound with no side effects examined the anti-inflammatory effects of emodin (1,3,8-trihydroxy-6-methylanthraquinone), a natural occurring anthraquinone derivative isolated from roots and barks of numerous plants, such as herbal Cascara Sagrada, molds, and lichens.

Injection of emodin displayed significant activity in the inhibition of asthma symptoms through anti-inflammatory effects.

In order to reveal more inflammation-related to the effects of herbal Cascara Sagrada against asthma, researchers examined anthraquinone, another bioactive compound isolated from the herbal medicine.

In allergic mice infected with RV1B inducing an exacerbation, anthraquinone treatment reduced expression of proteins associated with the immune response and cellular and molecular mechanisms driving asthma pathophysiology.

Furthermore, injection of the bioactive compound also exerted a decrease of airway inflammation involved stimulating the vascular angiogenesis, permeability, and remodeling and ameliorating the allergen- and RV-induced airways hyperreactivity.

Moreover, Anthraquinones also inhibited airway inflammation through decreasing the white blood cell and cytokine/chemokine expression, mucus hypersecretion, and protein associated with the overexpression of the immune response.

Addtionally, anthraquinones also boosted the cytokines which play a crucial role in protecting the airway by the initiating inflammatory responses through inducing recruitment and activation of immune cells.

Dr. and colleagues wrote in the final report, "Non-cytotoxic anthraquinone derivatives may be of therapeutic benefit for the treatment of severe and RV-induced asthma".

Taken altogether, herbal Cascara Sagrada may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of asthma.

Honey, the Best for the Treatment of Chronic Cough with No Side Effects

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural alternative for the treatment of chronic cough, according to studies.

Cough is a natural human reflex that clears the throat of mucus or foreign irritants.
Although it is not common, coughing also is used to clear foreign substances and irritants infrequently associated with a certain lung infection.

Unlike an acute cough, chronic cough is a cough that lasts more than eight weeks. The most common causes of a chronic cough are a postnasal drip, asthma, and acid reflux.

Believe or not, postnasal drip, asthma, and acid reflux are found in 90% of patients with a chronic cough.

According to the statistic, approximately, 2.% of the US adults suffer from a chronic cough, and the risk chronic cough of current smokers is substaintial higher compared to non-smokers.

Besides smoking, people with chronic lung diseases such as asthma, bronchiectasis, COPD, and previous lung infections with scars are also at increased risk of developing a chronic cough.

Some researchers suggested that obese children may also be at risk of the chronic condition.

Dr. S Deane, the lead scientist in the assessment of the obese risk of a chronic cough in children said, "Obese children have more respiratory symptoms than their normal-weight peers and respiratory-related pathology increases with increasing weight"

And, "Some will need specialist assessment (box 1). Obesity produces mechanical effects on respiratory system performance. Breathlessness, wheeze, and cough are not related to increased airway responsiveness and may respond more to weight loss than bronchodilator therapy. A significant number of obese children have signs and symptoms of obstructive sleep apnoea largely related to the effect of obesity on upper airway dimensions".

These results strongly suggested that the increased weight of obese children is the major risk factor on the development of chronic cough.

Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

Scientists on searching a natural remedy for the treatment of a chronic cough without inducing adverse effects compared the effects of a single nocturnal dose of 3 honey products (eucalyptus honey, citrus honey, or labiatae honey) to placebo (silan date extract) on nocturnal cough associated with childhood upper respiratory tract infections (URIs).

The study included 300 children aged 1 to 5 years with URIs, nocturnal cough, and illness duration of ≤ 7 days from 6 general pediatric community clinics. Eligible children received a single dose of 10 g of eucalyptus honey, citrus honey, Labiatae honey, or placebo administered 30 minutes before bedtime.

According to the results from 2 consecutive days, there was a significant improvement from the night before treatment to the night of treatment in the treatment group compared to the placebo.

Furthermore, according to the parents' review, the honey exhibited a higher than the silan date extract for symptomatic relief for their children's nocturnal cough and sleep difficulty.

In order to reveal more information about honey against chronic cough in children, researchers examined the honey effect in the persistent post-infectious cough (PPC) that lasts more than three weeks or perhaps for many months.

The double-blind randomized controlled trial conducted from 2008 to 2011 at the Baqiyatallah University Hospital, Tehran, Iran. included 97 adults experienced PPC for more than three weeks randomly distributed into three groups.

Participants were given either a jam-like paste included honey plus coffee for the first group ('HC'), orprednisolone for the second group (steroid, 'S'), or and guaifenesin for the third group (control, 'C').

All participants were told to dissolve a specified amount of their product in warm water and drink the solution every eight hours for one week.

The mean (+/- SD) cough scores pre- and post-treatment were: HC group 2.9 (0.3) pre-treatment and 0.2 (0.5) post-treatment (p < 0.001), and steroid ('S') group 3.0 (0.0) pre-treatment and 2.4 (0.6) post-treatment (p < 0.05)

The control ('C') group exerted mean (+/- SD) cough scores of 2.8 (0.4) pre-treatment and 2.7 (0.5) post-treatment (p > 0.05).

By Analysing  the variance, researchers found that there is  a significant difference between the mean cough frequency before and after treatment in the HC group, compared to the S group

Honey plus coffee was found to be the most effective modality for PPC, compared to other groups.

Taken altogether, honey may be considered an alternative remedy for the prevntion and treatment of  chronic coughs in children and adults, pending to the condirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Honey, the Best to inhibit the Expression of Oxidative Stress with No Side Effects

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural alternative for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, according to studies.

Oxidative stress is a medical condition associated with the overexpression of free radical compared to low levels of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host.

In fact, free radicals are constantly produced in animal and human cells. The air we breathe, the thing we eat and the environment we contact are some factors that cause the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS).

Epidemiological studies suggested that oxidative stress can induce damage to the cell, lipid, proteins, and alternation of cell DNA, leading to chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and particularly, cancer.

How overexpression of free radical cause damage to the cells. Researchers explained due to free radical unstable nature with unpair of electrons on the out ring of molecules, they constantly seek to donate or intercept the electron from other stable atoms, leading to a chain reaction that can not be stopped until all unpaired electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

These processes can lead to imbalanced of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidant produced by the host body resulting in oxidative stress, a major cause of cell, lipid and protein damage.

In spite of free radicals harmful effects, one must understand that cellular oxygen species (ROS), are necessary with a moderate amount to protect our body in the mediation of antimicrobial infection, detoxification of potentially toxic compounds, and elimination of cancerous and other life-threatening cells through cytotoxicity.

On the other hand, antioxidants are stable molecules that inhibit oxidation. Antioxidants can reduce levels of free radical and overexpression can limit the free radical function in carrying out their health benefits.

Therefore, in order to maintain a good healthy, the levels of free radicals and antioxidants must be balanced.

Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

Researchers on finding a natural compound for the inhibition of oxidative stress examined the honey activity on oxidative stress induced by lead acetate exposure in male Wistar rats.

The study included 24 male Wistar rats randomly divided into four groups: Control group that received 1 ml/kg distilled orally for 28 days; while groups II-IV received 0.2% lead in drinking water and 1 ml/kg of distilled water, 1 ml/kg of honey, 1.5 ml/kg of honey respectively for 28 days.

Before pretreatment with honey, infected rats showed a decrease in locomotor and exploratory and decrease antioxidant activity increase in anxiety, memory impairment, lipid peroxidation.

Co-administration of honey with lead inhibited neurotoxicity observed by the improvement in memory function and decreased latency period and increased in time spent in target quadrant compared to the lead-exposed animals.

Injection of honey in the lead fed group also increased locomotion, exploration and decreased anxiety observed by the frequency of rearing, freezing duration and the number of lines crossed by animals.

More importantly, the administration of honey improved the levels of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host observed by increased brain SOD, GST, and GSH activities compared to the lead-treated groups.

However, honey pretreatment group showed no significant effect on MDA level, the oxidative stress marker.

These results suggested that honey exerted neuroprotective effects against lead-induced cognitive deficit probably by enhancing antioxidant activities without affecting the levels of MDA.

In order to reveal more information about honey antioxidative stress, researchers investigated the effects of Tualang honey (TH) protective activity against oxidative stress of exercise.

The study included 20 female athletes (aged 21.3 [2.1] years; body weight [BW] 54.1 [5.7] kg) were randomly assigned into two groups and consumed either 1.5 g/kg BW TH (high honey; HH; n = 10) or 0.75 g/kg BW TH (low honey; LH; n = 10).

Injection of Tualang honey showed a reduction of MDA in the LH group compared to the HH group. In other words, less oxidative stress was found in the LH group.

The concentrations of total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant activity (ferric reducing antioxidant power [FRAP]) increased from baseline to 2 and 1 h after TH consumption, respectively, then the concentrations returned toward baseline at 3 h in both LH and HH groups.

MDA concentration significantly decreased (p < 0.05) from baseline to 2 h and significantly increased from 2 to 3 h in the HH group. Meanwhile, ROS levels increased significantly from 0.5 to 3 h in the HH group.

Compared to the HH group, the LH group showed similar trends but insignificant increased levels of MDA and ROS.

Taken altogether, honey particularly Tualang honey may be considered functional remedies for the prevention and treatment of diseases related to the expression of oxidative stress with no side effects, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study

Honey, The Best Remedy for Prevention and Treatment of Stomach Ulcers, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found natural alternative antibiotics for the treatment of stomach ulcer caused by a bacterial infection, some studies found.

Stomach/Gastric ulcer is a condition characterized by the breaking in the tissue lining of the stomach.

Most cases of stomach ulcer are caused by the infection with the Helicobacter pylori bacterium or long-term intake of anti-inflammatory medication.

Most common symptoms of stomach ulcer include dull pain in the stomach, gastrointestinal discomforts such as nausea or vomiting. bloating, burping or burning sensation in the chest.

If you are experiencing some of the above symptoms persistently, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of stomach ulcer.

Unless the disease is caused by medication, most stomach ulcer can be treated successfully with the use of antibiotics and medications that reduce the overproduction of stomach acid.

Some researchers suggested that people who are obese are also susceptible to the onset of stomach ulcer due to the following reasons
* Epidemiological findings suggested that obesity is associated with the inflammation in the gut, leading to the weakness of gut cells that prone to the ulcer formation.

* Obesity has been found to have an unhealthy ratio of gut bacterias.

* Overexpression gut harmful bacterias increased the risk of toxin accumulation in the lining of the gut.

Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of stomach ulcers investigated the Manuka honey antiulcer activity in gastric rats.

Ethanol-induced gastric ulcers in rats selected to the study were divided into control, ethanol (ulcer), omeprazole, and manuka honey group.

Injection of Manuka honey significantly decreased the ulcer index, completely protected the mucosa from lesions, and preserved gastric mucosal glycoprotein through the increased the expression gastric mucosal levels of nitric oxide (NO) in the inhibition of leukocyte adherence to the endothelium, and antioxidant enzymes glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), superoxide dismutase (SOD).

Furthermore, Manuka honey also decreased gastric mucosal MDA, the oxidative stress marker and proinflammatory expression in the stomach caused by the injection of ethanol (ulcer), omeprazole.

Dr. the lead scientist wrote, "Manuka honey likely exerted its antiulcer, effect by keeping enzymatic (GPx and SOD) and nonenzymatic (GSH and NO) antioxidants as well as inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6) in a reduced form, inhibited lipid peroxidation (MDA), and preserved mucous glycoproteins levels".

The findings clearly suggested Manuka honey inhibited stomach ulcer by modulating the oxidative stress, proinflammatory cytokines, and antioxidant expression.

In order to reveal more information about honey antiulcer activity, researchers evaluated the use of Manuka honey in the treatment of acetic acid-induced chronic gastric ulcers in rats.

The study included rats treated with three different concentrations of honey. Treatment with manuka honey was found to significantly reduce the ulcer index and maintain the glycoprotein content.

Manuka injection also reduced the mucosal myeloperoxidase activity, lipid peroxidation (MDA), and the inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6) as compared to the untreated control group.

Honey-treated groups showed a significant increase in enzymatic (GPx and SOD) and nonenzymatic (GSH) antioxidants besides levels of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10, similar to that of the previous study.

More importantly, manuka honey treated animals not only normalized cell cycle distribution but also significantly lowered apoptosis in gastric mucosa.

The results indicated that manuka honey is effective for the treatment of chronic ulcer through many mechanisms.

Taken altogether, Manuka honey may be considered a function remedy for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of stomach ulcer with no side effects.

Honey, the Natural Pain Reliever with No Side Effects

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural alternative pain relief remedy for alleviating pain, according to studies. found.
.
Pain relief is an action to remove pain, distress, oppression by blocking the pain-transmitting information from nerve cells to the brain neurons.

Acute pain is any pain that lasts less than 6 months. Most cases of acute pain are due to physical damage such as soft tissue damage of a sprained ankle or a paper cut. Acute pain is relatively more sharp and severe.

On the other hand, there are many risk factors associated with chronic pain. Some chronic pains can be caused by single factors such as diseases involved nerve damage to injuries that fail to heal properly. Others may be results from several factors including diseases associated with normal aging.

Over the counter medications used for the treatment of pain includes acetaminophen (Tylenol) and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

Besides the gastrointestinal discomforts, long-term use of Tylenol may be additive.  Overdoses or consumed together with alcohol, Tylenol can cause liver damage in severe case.

If you are taking some of over counter medicine for pain relieving, please make sure you know all the side effects for the preventive measure.

Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

Researchers on finding a natural ingredient for the pain relief examined the honey effect as an adjunct pain therapy.

The pain relief of honey was the results of the contribution of the numerous phytochemicals and components, including the interaction of protein, amino acid, flavonoids, phenolics, organic acid, pigment, water, and (high) sugar content in honey.

These components work together to relieve pain by exerting the antibacterial, antiinflammation, and immunomodulation properties.

According to additional differentiation, honey reduced pain through the expression of the level of central and peripheral nervous system or at the autonomic receptor sites involved in pain transmission via the cyclooxygenase pathway in nociception and pain.

Futhermore, in the examined the honey pain relief in post-tonsillectomy treatment with or without adenoidectomy, researchers launched a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study included 140 patients, who were older than eight.

Patients were divided into two equal groups, honey, and placebo.

Compared the acetaminophen plus honey for the honey group, and acetaminophen plus placebo for the placebo group, researchers found that
* According to the visual analog scale (VAS) and a number of painkillers taken within the first three postoperative days, acetaminophen and acetaminophen plus honey groups showed a statistically significant reduction of pain.

*The reduced use of painkillers differed significantly in every five postoperative days.

* Pain awoke at night are also reduced with no difference between groups.

* Honey injection exerted negligible side effects

These results strongly showed that postoperative honey administration reduces postoperative pain and analgesic requirements in patients after tonsillectomy.

Taken altogether, there is no doubt that honey may be considered a functional remedy for pain relief with little side effects, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.
