Honey, the Best Remedy for the treatment of Asthma with No Side Effects

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural alternative for the treatment of asthma, according to studies.

Asthma is a chronic inflammation of the airway of the lung with recurring symptoms. Asthma, attacks triggered by the stimuli can induce airway swollen and inflamed, leading to muscle constriction.

During the asthma attacks, patients may experience symptoms of difficult breathing, and severe wheezing in the breath and coughs that won't stop.

According to the statistic provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 1 in 13 people in the US has asthma.

In other words, more than 26 million Americans have asthma, with half of the patients are children.

If you experience symptoms of a cough which often worse at night or early in the morning, wheezing in your breath, accompanied with chest tightness and shortness of breath, you may be at the early stage of asthma. Please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

Genetic and environmental factors are the most common risk factors associated with the onset of asthma. Some researchers suggested that the widespread obesity over the past few decades may also have a strong implication on the onset of the disease.

Dr. David A. Beuthe r, the lead scientist in the concern of the association of asthma and obesity  said, "Cross-sectional and prospective cohort studies of humans have shown a modest overall increase in asthma incidence and prevalence in the obese, although body mass index does not appear to be a significant modifier of asthma severity".

And, "Studying the obesity-asthma relationship in large cohorts, in which self-reports are frequently used to ascertain the diagnosis of asthma, has been complicated by alterations in pulmonary physiology caused by obesity, which may lead to dyspnea or other respiratory symptoms but do not fulfill accepted physiologic criteria for asthma".

These results strongly suggested that if you are obese, your risk of asthma is increased substantially.

Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

Scientists on finding a natural remedy for the treatment of asthma investigated the effect of aerosolized honey on airway tissues in a rabbit model of ovalbumin (OVA)-induced asthma.

The study included 40 New Zealand white rabbits sensitized twice with a mixture of OVA and aluminum hydroxide on days 1 and 14.

Honey treatments were given from day 23 to day 25 at two different doses (25% (v/v) and 50% (v/v) of honey diluted in sterile phosphate buffer saline.

During the study, aerosolized honey treatment group restored the epithelium, mucosa, and submucosal regions of the airway infected by the application of OVA.

Futhermore, aerosolized honey treatment also found to reduce the number of airway inflammatory cells presented in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and inhibit the goblet cell hyperplasia, an indication of airway remodeling in asthma.

The findings strongly suggested that aerosolized honey has a significant effect on the treatment and management of asthma in animal models.

Additional differentiation of the modulatory effect of honey, royal jelly, and propolis extract on peripheral blood leukocytes and lung inflammation in a mouse conalbumin-induced asthma model in mice model divided into
* The mice in group I that were not sensitized or treated; they were kept as controls.

* The mice in group II that were sensitized and challenged with conalbumin. Twenty-four hours after the first challenge with antigen.

* The mice in group III received 0.5 mg/kg of dexamethasone intraperitoneally per day for 18 consecutive days and kept as positive controls.

* The mice in groups IV, V, and VI received 650, 1000, and 30 mg/kg of honey, royal jelly, and propolis (aqueous and ethanolic extract), respectively, once per day for 18 consecutive days.

At the end of the experiment, by comparing the blood sample before and after treatment, researchers showed
* The groups treated with propolis extract exhibited considerable ameliorative effects against asthma, probably due to the expression of flavonoids and phenolics that exert antioxidative effects.

* Honey- or royal jelly-treated groups exhibited an increased incidence of asthma cascade events due to increased inflammatory cells, probably due to the antagonist to bronchial asthma cases.

The results clearly indicated that not all honey is the same. Some can be used for asthma while others can not, probably due to types of chemicals compounds found in the pollen

Taken altogether, honey and other bee products may be considered functional remedies for the prevention and treatment of asthma, pending to the confirmation of the types of honey in a large and multicenter human study.

Honey, the Best for the Treatment of Ocular Demodex and Dry-Eye with No Side Effects

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural alternative for the treatment of  Ocular Demodex and Dry-Eye, according to studies.

Believe or not, the Demodex in eyelashes that cause the severity of ocular discomfort is quite common in the US. According to the US Federal Science, over 70% of American suffer from the presence of Demodex without even noticing.

The increase in age, patients with conjunctival papillary hypertrophy, are some most common Demodex risk factors.

Furthermore, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) was detected more often on eyelids with Demodex.

The finding strongly suggested that Demodex plays a pathogenic role in the ocular discomfort linked with aging.

Dry eye happened mostly in the older adults is a condition in which a person doesn't have enough quality tears to clean and nourish the eye, leading to a chronic vision problem.

Dry eye in most cases is caused by the inadequate amount of tears due to lower than normal amount of tear production or tears evaporate too quickly from the eyes and poor quality of tears.

People with dry eye may experience symptoms of irritation, gritty, scratchy or burning eyes; a feeling of something in their eyes; excess watering; and blurred vision.

Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid It is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

Researchers with an aim to find a natural source for the treatment of vision problem compared the Manuka honey and tea tree oil against ocular Demodex.

The study included 53 viable Demodex mites acquired from the epilated eyelashes of 9 participants with blepharitis and symptomatic dry eye. Then, the viable mites were randomized to one of five treatment groups: cyclodextrin-complexed and uncomplexed Manuka Honey, 100% and 50% tea tree oil, and no treatment.

Compared to the results of four treatments, researchers found that the survival probabilities are lowest with 100% tea tree oil, and highest with cyclodextrin-complexed and uncomplexed Manuka Honey.

The finding clearly suggested that the efficacy of cyclodextrin-complexed Manuka honey was comparable with 50% tea tree oil, an established treatment for ocular Demodex.

In order to reveal more information about honey anti-dry eye effects, researchers evaluated
the effects of Manuka (Leptospermum sp.) honey eye drops (Optimel, Melcare, Australia).

The study included 24 participants aged 20 to 55 years with contact lens-related dry eye randomized to two treatment groups with 20 completed the study.

One group was received Optimel eye drops twice a day for two weeks followed by conventional lubricant (Systane Ultra, Alcon) therapy for two weeks while the other group completed the treatments in the reverse order.

The Optimel treatment exerted an improvement of Dry eye symptoms significantly and patients with more severe symptoms at baseline showed a greater improvement in symptoms.

Seventy-five% of contact lens wearers reported good adherence to Optimel treatment and 95% reported no issues using this product.

However, due to the short duration of treatment, there were no significant differences observed in the objective signs of a dry eye.

Researchers at the ean of the experiment wrote in the final report, "Optimel Eye Drops reduce the symptoms of dry eye in contact lens wearers and are safe to use".

Taken altogether, honey, particularly Tualang honey may be considered functional remedies for the prevention and treatment of ocular Demodex and dry-eye, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Whole Food Avocado, the Natural Sources of Antioxidants Against Lipids, Proteins and Cells DNA Damage

By Kyle J. Norton

In the search of natural therapy for the prevention and treatment of diseases involved oxidative stress, scientists may have found a dietary whole fruit with the efficacy compared to that of conventional medicine, according to studies.

Antioxidants are stable atoms which inhibit free radical and stop the free radicals chain reaction.

Free radicals on other hand are unstable and highly reactive molecules with a single or unpaired electron on the outer ring. In order to maintain the balance, free radicals are ready either to donate or intercept an electron from another stable atom, leading to domino's effect which can not be stopped until the electron is paired or inhibited by an antioxidant.

Overexpression of free radicals and suppressed levels of antioxidants cause oxidative stress, leading to the damage cell structure, protein and lipid and alternation of cell DNA.

Every day, the human body is bombarded by the invasion of free radicals. Some foods we eat, the polluted air we breathe, the use of the toxic chemical substances and the body metabolism all contribute to the expression of free radicals in our body.

Luckily, for a healthy individual, our body antioxidant enzymes are good enough to maintain the balance ratio, regardless of the levels of free radicals produced.

However, for the people with suppressed antioxidant enzymes in the body, dietary sources of antioxidants from fruits and vegetable can be very helpful.

Researchers at the Karolinska Institutet suggested that a high intake of fruit and vegetables is related to low oxidative stress.

Dr. Rikard Åsgård, the lead scientist said, "Fruit and vegetable intake was inversely related to oxidative stress" and " An increased intake of fruit and vegetables can, therefore, be beneficial for patients with type 2 diabetes since these patients are documented to have raised oxidative stress and inflammation".

The results clearly encouraged that people who suppress antioxidant produced by the body should add some portions of fruits and vegetables into their diet.
Avocado is a commercially valuable fruit cultivated in tropical climates throughout the world. It is a green-skinned, pear-shaped fruit that ripens after harvesting and native to the Caribbean, Mexico, South America, and Central America, belonging to the flowering plant family Lauraceae.

Chemical constituents
The fruit contains campesterol, high amounts of β-sitosterol (average 76.4 mg/100 g); fatty acids (approximately 60% monounsaturated, 20% saturated, and 20% unsaturated); high amounts of glutathione (27.7 mg/100 g); approximately 2% protein; 6–9% carbohydrates and sugars (glucose, fructose, d-mannoheptulose, a taloheptulose, and an alloheptulose); two bitter substances (1-acetoxy-2,4-dihydroxyheptadeca-16-ene and 1,2,4-trihydroxyheptadeca-16-ene); carnitine; proanthocyanidins; persenones A and B.

With an aim to find natural ingredients with significant antioxidant effects against bacterial infection in the induction of oxidative stress, researchers examine the thyl acetate, containing 70% acetone, and 70% methanol extracts of the peel, pulp, and seed from two avocadi (Persea Americana Mill) against Gram-positive bacteria.

Peels and seeds were found to possess higher amounts of phenolics and had a more intense in vitro antioxidant potential, compared to the pulp.

The efficacy of the peels and seeds against Gram-positive bacteria were associated with the rich in catechins, procyanidins, and hydroxycinnamic acids, whereas the pulp was particularly rich in hydroxybenzoic and hydroxycinnamic acids and procyanidins.

The results indicated that avocado displays moderate antimicrobial effects against Gram-positive bacteria.

Furthermore, injection of the extracts (70% acetone) from avocado peels and seeds as inhibitors of oxidative reactions in meat patties, researchers also found that avocado extracts protected meat lipids and proteins against oxidation with the effect on lipids being dependent on the avocado variety.

Moreover, in the examine the antioxidant activity of other compounds such as monounsaturated fatty acids, tocopherols, carotenes, acetogenins and sterols found in avocado researchers once again confirmed the antioxidant property by comparing the lipophilic AOC of the pulp and the fruit hydrophilic AOC.

According to the chemical assay of oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC), the highest antioxidant activity of lipophilic AOC was attributed to the presence of high levels of acetogenins, compared to other compounds.

The findings showed that the presence of emulsifying agents which are soluble in both fat and water could serve as novel lipophilic antioxidants in a food matrix.

Interestingly, the University of California in the study "the effect of harvest date on nutritional compounds and antioxidant activity (AOC) in avocado (Persea Americana Mill. cv Hass) fruit" , suggested that AOC in early harvested fruit after storage for 35 days was much higher antioxidant contents than that in late-harvested fruit after storage for 21 days.

Taken altogether, there is no doubt that whole fruit avocado processed a strong antioxidant property may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of oxidative stress-related diseases

Celery, The Potential Anti High Blood Cholesterol with No side Effects

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a whole vegetable for the prevention and treatment of high blood cholesterol comparable to that of conventional medicine without inducing any side effects, according to studies.

High blood cholesterol is a medical condition of abnormally high levels of cholesterol in the blood.

There are 2 types of cholesterols in the human body,  the low-density lipoproteins, and high-density lipoproteins.

The low-density cholesterol plays an important role in building cell membranes, inducing the production of bile, steroid hormones and vitamin. However, long-term accumulation of cholesterol in the bloodstream not only impedes the blood flow of the arteries but also increases the risk of plaque built up on the arterial walls.

The high-density lipoprotein removes cholesterol from the blood and returns them to the liver. However, if the low-density lipoprotein in the bloodstream was found in high amounts, compared to high-density lipoprotein, then some bad cholesterols may be left in the arteries, causing the onset of high blood cholesterol.

The healthy ratio of blood cholesterol is lower than 4 (levels of low-density lipoprotein)/ 1(levels of high-density cholesterol).

What causes high blood cholesterol? Epidemiological studies suggested that a poor diet with rich in saturated and trans fat, red meat and processed foods and few in fruits and vegetables are the most common risk factors that cause the onset of high blood cholesterol in the Western world.

According to the statistic, in Australia, over 1 million of the population have high blood cholesterol. The highest prevalent group is those between 55 to 64 year age group.

Sadly, one in five Australians aged 18 to 34 also has high total cholesterol.

Dr. Henry N. Ginsberg, the lead scientist in  the cardiovascular disease team in examining the risk of high blood cholesterol and diet cholesterol in young and healthy men said, "Fasting plasma total cholesterol concentrations increased by 1.47 mg/dL (0.038 mmol/L) for every 100 mg dietary cholesterol added to the diet (P <.001). Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol increased in parallel." and "  increases in dietary cholesterol resulted in linear increases in fasting total and LDL cholesterol in young, healthy men".

These results suggested that short-term intake of high cholesterol diet does not have an effect on postprandial plasma lipids or an increased atherogenic potential of postprandial serum. In other words, high blood cholesterol is a condition caused by long-term high cholesterol diet that takes years to develop.

Celery is a species of Apium graveolens, belonging to the family Apiaceae. It is cultivated all around the globe as a vegetable. Celery can grow to 1/2 m tall with stalks (leaf on the top) arranging in a conical shape joined at a common base.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient or whole food which processes anti-high blood cholesterol activity with no side effects, researchers at the National University of Singapore looked into the antihyperlipidemic property of aqueous celery extract.

The study included 2 groups of Wistar rats fed a high-fat diet for eight weeks to induce hyperlipidemia. One group was supplemented with aqueous celery extract in the diet while the other group served as control.

At the end of the experiment, treatment group exerted a significant reduction in the serum total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and triglyceride (TG) concentrations, compared to control.

The concentration of hepatic TG was significantly higher in the celery-treated group than in the control group. However, the hepatic triacylglycerol lipase (HL) activity was found to be significantly lower in the celery-treated rats observed for the hepatic microsomal P450 content which is an indication of individual hepatic clearance.

Surprisingly, researchers discovered that aqueous extract of celery does not contain 3-n-butylphthalide (BuPh), a unique compound in celery. This result suggested that the efficacy of celery probably is associated with other major unknown compound compounds.

Futhermore, in the examining other compounds processed the anti-high blood cholesterol activity, researchers explored the antihyperlipidemic effect of ethanolic extract of seeds of Apium graveolens L. (celery) and its chloroform and aqueous basic fraction in olive oil induced hyperlipidemic rats.

The antihyperlipidemic activity of Apium graveolens has been found in the previous study was effective as of those of standard drug Atorvastatin (50mg/kg).

The study included the ethanolic extract and its fractions administered orally at doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg body weight in rats following by the Olive oil (5ml/kg oral dose) administered 30 min after treatment.

The ethanolic extract and its fractions of celery at a dose-dependently inhibited the total cholesterol (TC) triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoproteins (LDL) level, and significantly increased high density lipoprotein (HDL) level.

The inhibition of high blood cholesterol was attributed to the major compounds terpenoid, tannin, alkaloid, glycoside, flavonoid, and sterols.

Taken altogether, celery containing high amounts of bioactive compounds may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of high blood cholesterol with no side effects

Herbal Aloe Vera, the Potential Cure of Irritable Bowel Syndrome Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural remedy for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome with no side effects, according to studies.

Irritable bowel syndrome is a condition characterized by abdominal pain or discomfort, bloating, and alteration of bowel habits at least three times a month for the last 3 months without preexistence of other diseases.

According to the statistic, IBS affects approximately over 11% of the population globally and only 30% of these patients consult physicians for their IBS symptoms. People with IBS without seeing their doctors were found to experience a significantly reduced quality of life and psychological symptoms.

Compared to the male counterpart, women are at high risk of the condition. Believe or not there is 25% less IBS diagnosed in the population of over 50 years of age.

People with family history and the genetic factors are at a higher risk of the condition onset and most patients diagnosed with IBS are found infected by other functional disease compared to the general population.

Besides family history, gender, and genetic factors, others most common risk factors of IBS include smoking, frequent alcohol consumption, younger age, according to epidemiological studies.

Some researchers suggested that sedentary lifestyle, a type of lifestyle involving little or no physical activity is also a major component in the Western world associated with IBS.

By examing the attenuation of gravitational aid to distal intestinal motility, resulting in damaging chronic intestinal distention, researchers at the McGill Centre for Studies in Aging, the prevalence of IBS irritable bowel syndrome have worsened in recent years owing to excessive dietary fiber intake.

Dr. said, "Potential solutions include augmenting weight-bearing time, moderating dietary fiber consumption, stimulating distal colon evacuation through chemical means and developing pharmaceuticals to block the reflexive distal colon distention associated with fiber consumption".

And, " Amplified intestinal distention commenced when all classes of Renaissance Europeans became the first group in human history to wear shoes, which led to a sedentary lifestyle that moderates gravitational aid to colon motility and evacuation".

Therefore, by engaging in daily moderate exercise and following a healthy diet, not only can prevent the syndrome but also treat IBS. Please consult with your dietitian for a better diet management that is suitable for you.

Aloe Vera is species of succulent plant in the genus Aloe, belonging to the Family Xanthorrhoeaceae, native to Sudan.

Herbal medicine has become very popular for commercial cultivation due to its health benefits. Aloe vera has been used in herbal medicine in treating many kinds of disease, including wound, burn healing, minor skin infections, sebaceous cysts, diabetes, and elevated cholesterol, etc. It is also one of many popular herbs studied in scientific ways with some conflicting results.

The ten main areas of chemical constituents of Aloe vera include amino acids, anthraquinones, enzymes, minerals, vitamins, lignins, monosaccharide, polysaccharides, salicylic acid, saponins, and sterols.

With an aim to find a natural compound or remedy for the prevention and treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), researchers investigated the beneficial effects of a mixture of Aloe vera (AV) and Matricaria recutita (German chamomile, GC) in an experimental model.

IBS-induced rats by a 5-day divided to the groups of control (water), GC (300 mg/kg), loperamide (10 mg/kg), mixed AV and GC (50: 50 at doses of 150, 300 or 450 mg/kg assigned as Mix-150, Mix-300 and Mix-450, respectively).

Application of mixed AV and GC showed a significant reduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress markers in the IBS-induced rats.

Futhermore, lipid peroxidation (LPO) in colonic cells was also decreased substantially in the mixture treatment group, compared to in the control group.

Moreover, GC inhibited only small bowel transit while the AV/GC mixture delayed gastric emptying at the doses of 150 and 300 mg/kg, compared to that of the AV/GC mixture which reduces colonic transit and small bowel transit at the dose of 150 mg/kg.

Dr. Asadi-Shahmirzadi A and colleagues at the final day of the experiment said, "The severity of stress-induced IBS was diminished by the AV/GC mixture at all doses used but not dose-dependently, via inhibiting colonic MPO activity and improving oxidative stress status".

In order to understant the addtional effects of Aloe vera in the treatment of IBS, researchers examined the efficacy of AV on IBS in refractory secondary care patients.

Patients with IBS )with 58 patients randomized, 49 completed the protocol to 1 month and 41 to 3 months) were randomized to receive AV or matching placebo for a month.

Symptoms were assessed at baseline, 1 and 3 months.

Aloe vera treatment group showed a significant effect in diarrhea at 1 month. There is a possibility that improvement occurred in patients with diarrhea or alternating IBS whilst taking AV.

The findings suggested that Aloe vera used alone or combined with chamomile for the prevention and combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), pending to the results of a large sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Andrographis, the Anti Hepatitis Functional Remedy, According to Human Study

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a herbal plant for the prevention and treatment of hepatitis infection with no side effects, according to studies.

Hepatitis is a condition characterized by the destruction of a number of liver cells and the presence of inflammatory cells in the liver tissue.

Mose cases of hepatitis are caused by infection of the hepatitis viruses. However, excessive alcohol drinking, disorders of the gallbladder or pancreas, and long-term use of certain medication are also associated with the onset of the disease.

The term is unfortunately commonly used to refer to a particular group of viruses such as Hepatitis A, B, and C.

If you are experiencing persistent symptoms of fatigue, flu-like symptoms, dark urine, pale stool abdominal pain, and jaundice. please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of hepatitis.

In some cases, hepatitis can also be caused by to immune disease in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the liver, leading to mild to severe chronic inflammation that hinders the liver function.

Dr. Yoshio Aizawa, the lead author in the liver diseases research team at the Jikei University Katsushika Medical Center in the examination of the complication of autoimmune hepatitis, wrote, "Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a chronic progressive liver disease characterized by high levels of aminotransferases and autoantibodies, hypergammaglobulinemia, and interface hepatitis"

"There is confusion as to the definition of the disease entity and its boundaries in the diagnosis of overlap syndrome, drug-induced autoimmune hepatitis, and AIH with concomitant nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) or chronic hepatitis C" and "Immunologically, disruption of the immune tolerance to autologous liver antigens may be a trigger of AIH".

Andrographis paniculata is also known as Andrographis is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic in treating the common cold, flu, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia, swollen lymph nodes, leprosy, bronchitis, sore throats, tuberculosis, chicken pox, etc.

Besides the main ingredient andrographolides, giving the plant a bitter taste, other ingredients of herbal Andrographis include diterpene lactones, such as neoandrographolide, andrographiside, 14-doexy-11, 12-didehydro andrographolide, etc., flavonoinds viz., oroxylin, wogonin, andrographidines A, B, C, D, E, F.

With an aim to find a natural compound or remedy for the treatment of hepatitis with no side effects, researchers evaluated the anti-hepatitis C virus (HCV) activity of andrographolide, a diterpenoid lactone extracted from Andrographis paniculata.

In HCV replicon and HCVcc infectious systems, andrographolide time- and dose-dependently suppressed HCV replication.

Combined with anti-hepatitis medicines, such as IFN-α, an inhibitor targeting HCV NS3/4A protease (telaprevir), or NS5B polymerase (PSI-7977), andrographolide exhibited a significant synergistic effect.

The anti antiviral effects of the diterpenoid lactone extracted from Andrographis paniculata.were attenuated by an HO-1-specific inhibitor or the inhibition of HO-1 gene involved the production of oxidative in contributing the anti-HCV activity.

Furthermore, Andrographolide also activated the alternation of the protein (p38 MAPK) associated with the response to stress stimuli.

Additionally, the Banaras Hindu University, study in the evaluation of the anti-hepatitis effects of Kalmegh(Andrographis paniculata Nees) in the decoction form in patients of infective hepatitis.

Injection of the decoction showed a marked symptomatic improvement in the majority of the cases.

The decoction also showed a statistically highly significant decrease in various liver function.

Moreover, the application also increased significantly total serum globulin fraction protein which plays a critical role in liver functioning.

At the final day of the experiment, researchers said, "total assessment 80% cases of this series were cured and 20% of patients were relieved".

Taken altogether, herbal Andrographis may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention of liver infection and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of liver diseases, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Calendula Which Processes Anti-Plaque and Gingivitis Activity, revealed by Human Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural ingredient which has a potential effect against the onset of gingivitis, according to studies.

Gingivitis is a condition of the inflammation of the gum. The most common cause of the disease is poor hygiene in the induction of bacterial biofilms attached to tooth surfaces.

Gingivitis is an early stage of gum disease, leading to the inflammation in inducing plaque buildup at the gumlineDaily brushing and flossing in most cases can remove the plaque, without the assistance of the dentist.

However, if daily brushing and flossing can not remove the plaque, please check with your dentist.

Untreated gingivitis can weaken the bone and connective tissue that hold the teeth in place, causing to periodontitis and the loss of tooth or teeth.

Besides poor hygiene, smoking or chewing tobacco, medical conditions such as diabetes, long-term intake of certain medication such as oral contraceptives, steroids, anticonvulsants, a denture that fit poorly,  broken fillings, pregnancy, and genetic deposition are some risk factors associated with the onset of gingivitis.

Dr. Nascimento GG, the lead scientist, in the concern of widespread obesity in risk of gingivitis launched a study of a total of 1211 children aged 8- to 12-year old from the public and private schools in Southern Brazil by a two-stage cluster method.

In the oral examination, the presence of plaque and gingival bleeding were found in 34.6% in Obese/overweight children, compared to compared to the mean and median values of gingival bleeding sites were 3.10 and 2.0 respectively in the group.

According to the In the sex-stratified analysis, researchers said, "overweight/obese boys presented a greater risk for gingivitis".

The discovery strongly suggested there is a closed link between gingivitis and people who are obese.

Calendula is also known as pot marigold, the annual perennial herbaceous plants of about 12–20 species of genus Calendula, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Southern Europe.

The herbal medicine has been used in herbal medicine as spasmolytic, spasmogenic, inflammatory effects and for the treatment of abdominal cramps, wound healing, skin diseases, colitis, constipation, etc.

Besides major chemical constituents of triterpenoids, flavonoids, coumarines, quinones, volatile oil, carotenoids and amino acids, the herb also contains loliolide (calendin), calendulin and n-

Researchers on finding natural ingredients for the prevention and treatment of with no side effects examined the herbal Calendula officinalis anti-plaque and anti-gingivitis activity.

240 patients having gingivitis (probing depth (PD) ≤3 mm), with a complaint of bleeding gums within the age group of 20-40 years enrolled with their informed consent were included in this study.

The subjects were randomly assigned into two groups - test group (n = 120) and control group (n = 120).

All the test group patients were advised to dilute 2 ml of tincture of calendula with 6 ml of distilled water and rinse their mouths once in the morning and once in the evening for six months. Similarly, the control group patients were advised to use 8 ml distilled water (placebo) as control mouthwash and rinse mouth twice daily for six months.

In the absence of scaling (that is, between the first and second visit), the test group showed a statistically significant reduction in the scores of plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), sulcus bleeding index (SBI), and oral hygiene index-simplified (OHI-S) compared to the control group, when the baseline scores were compared with the third month scores.

However, when scaling was performed during the third month (second visit), there was a statistically significant reduction in the scores of all parameters, when the third month scores were compared with the sixth-month scores in both groups, but the test group showed a significantly greater reduction in the PI, GI, SBI, and OHI-S scores compared to that of the control group.

These results clearly suggested that calendula mouthwash is effective in reducing dental plaque and gingivitis adjunctive to scaling, according to the researchers.

In order to reveal more information about herbal Calendula anti-gingivitis effects, researchers investigated the effects of a topic gel containing clobetasol propionate and Calendula officinalis L in an acetate tray over two years.

The study included 2 patients with a diagnosis of lichen planus presenting as DG, researchers found that the symptomatic outbreaks were delayed and presented as less severe symptoms in the two years follow-up.

The findings indicated the topic gel treatment reduces the length and severity of symptomatic outbreaks desquamative gingivitis.

Taken altogether, herbal Calendula may be used as a mouthwash or topical gel for the prevention and treatment of gingivitis with no side effects, pending the result of a larger and multicenter human study
