Avocado, the Best Fruit for Skin health

By Kyle J. Norton

Researchers may have found a whole fruit for the promotion of skin health with no side effects, according to studies.

Skin, a large organ of the body protects our tissue and organs against the invasion of pathogens and fluid loss.

There are many causes of skin damage. Sun exposure is the most common cause of skin damage. Other causes of skin damage include smoking cigarettes, drinking too much alcohol, extreme temperatures, and exposure to toxic chemicals and pollutants in the air outside.

Some researchers suggested that free radicals bombard our body daily are also associated with skin damage in the modern world.

Free radicals are unstable molecules with the unpaired electron on the outer ring. In order for them to become balanced, free radical either donates or intercept an electron from another stable molecule, leading to a chain reaction that can not be stopped until the outer ring election is paired or inhibited by antioxidant.

In fact, free radical formation occurs continuously in the cells as a consequence of both enzymatic and nonenzymatic reactions, they can be generated by our bodies such as the process of metabolism and exogenous sources such as pollution, alcohol, tobacco smoke.

Free radicals can affect our skin in different ways, including the alternation of the DNA, damage of lipid membrane, collagen structures, and inducing photoaging and cancer.

Dr. Borut Poljšak, in the study "Free Radicals and Extrinsic Skin Aging" wrote, "Extrinsic skin damage develops due to several factors: ionizing radiation, severe physical and psychological stress, alcohol intake, poor nutrition, overeating, environmental pollution, and exposure to UV radiation (UVR)". and

"The only protection of our skin is in its endogenous protection (melanin and enzymatic antioxidants) and antioxidants we consume from the food (vitamin A, C, E, etc.)".

These results suggested that although free radical can induce the early onset of skin damage and aging, providing our body with enough antioxidants from the food sources is the best way to counter the process.

Avocado is commercially valuable fruit cultivated in tropical climates throughout the world. It is a green-skinned, pear-shaped fruit that ripens after harvesting and native to the Caribbean, Mexico, South America, and Central America, belonging to the flowering plant family Lauraceae.

On finding a natural ingredient or essential oil which has a potential effect on skin health without inducing any side effects, researchers explored the effects of various avocado oils on collagen metabolism.

In skin rats fed diets containing 10% (w/w) of the tested oils, researchers found the akin protective effects were totally depended on the types of avocado oil.

Rats fed the unrefined avocado oil extracted with hexane from the intact fruit, including unsaponifiables or the avocado seed oil, showed a significant increase in soluble collagen content in skin, though total collagen content was not affected.

The increased soluble collagen content was attributed to the inhibition of lysyl oxidase activity whose increment is associated with the oxidative stress induced by chronic exposure to skin harmful substances.

The active factor which protects the skin health was found to be present in the unrefined avocado oil and probably originated from the avocado seed, observed by the collagen metabolism which is affected only by fractions containing lipids fraction from the seed.

In order to illustrate the effects of avocado oil on skin health, researchers evaluated the wound-healing activity of a semisolid formulation of avocado oil, SSFAO 50%, or avocado oil in natural, on incisional and excisional cutaneous wound models in Wistar rats.

On the 14 days of application on the wound, 50% SSFAO or avocado oil demonstrate a significant increase in percentage wound contraction and reepithelialization, compared to the petroleum jelly control.

The treatment group also displayed the increase in anti-inflammatory activity, density of collagen, and tensile strength, compared to control groups.

This efficacy of the 50% SSFAO or avocado oil was attributed to the contents of the bioactive compounds, oleic fatty acid (47.20%), followed by palmitic (23.66%), linoleic (13.46%) docosadienoic (8.88%), palmitoleic (3.58%), linolenic (1.60%), eicosenoic (1.29%), and myristic acids (0.33%).

Dr. de Oliveira AP, the lead scientist wrote in the final report, "When used in natural or in pharmaceutical formulations for topical use, avocado oil can promote increased collagen synthesis and decreased numbers of inflammatory cells during the wound-healing process".

In skin exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, unique lipid molecules, polyhydroxylated fatty alcohols (PFA), extracted from avocado, reduced significantly UV-induced cellular damage, through increasing cell viability, decreased the secretion of IL-6, a pro-inflammatory cytokine, and PGE(2) in mediated the inflammation process.

Taken altogether, avocado processed abundantly bioactive compounds may be considered a functional food for the promotion of skin health without inducing any side effects

Allyl isothiocyanate, the Potential Anti Liver Cancer Bioactive Ingredient

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have discovered a bioactive compound isolated from horseradish for the prevention and treatment of liver cancer, according to the studies.

Liver cancer is a medical condition caused by irregular cell growth in the liver. Most cases of primary liver cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the liver. At the early stage of liver cancer, the patient may not experience any symptoms.

However, at the later stage, the overgrowth of tumor in the liver may suppress the nearby tissue and nerve cells, leading to localized symptoms and severe pain.

According to the world standard statistics, the onset of liver cancer rate is 10.1 per 100,000 people (15.3 in males and 5.3 in females).

The highest mortality rates occurred observed in the East Asian countries probably due to the high incidence of hepatitis virus

The world standardized mortality rate for liver cancer is 9.5 per 100,000 people (14.3 in males and 5.1 in females).

The most common risk factor of liver cancer is associated with the hepatitis viral infection. People with chronic infection with HBV or HCV are found in the high percentage of patients with liver cancer.

Dr. Marc Ringehan, in the concern of the high percentage of hepatitis viral carriers in the risk of liver cancer said, "Hepatitis B and C viruses are a global health problem causing acute and chronic infections that can lead to liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)" and "Owing to its high incidence and resistance to treatment, liver cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide, with HCC representing approximately 90% of all primary liver cancer cases".

" (Particularly, hepatitis B virus infection can promote HCC development without prior end-stage liver disease".

These results clearly reaffirmed the risk of liver cancer in population carrying the hepatitis B and C.

In fact, people who are chronically infected with hepatitis B have a 25% to 40% lifetime risk of developing liver cancer.

Allyl isothiocyanate is phytochemical containing sulfur in the class of organosulfur compound, found abundantly in horseradish, mustard, wasabi, etc.

With an aim to find a natural compound for the prevention and treatment of liver cancer, researchers looked into Allyl isothiocyanate (AITC), a bioactive ingredient and N-acetylcysteine (NAC) conjugate anti-liver cancer effects through the SK-Hep1 cells line.

Application of AITC exerted a significant activity in the inhibition of genes and proteins associated with suppressing tumor cell migration and activating cytokines and chemokines to regulate tissue remodeling.

At 25% for 10 micros, AITC suppressed SK-Hep 1 cell proliferation in a dose-dependent manner.

At 0.1-5 microM, AITC inhibited a significant MMP-2/-9 expression in SK-Hep1 cells compared with controls associated with the decrease of MMP-2/-9 messenger RNA levels.

However, AITC inhibited cancer cell adhesion and invasion much less potently compared to NAC-AITC.

Dr. Hwang ES and colleagues at the Seoul National University, said, "NAC-AITC at 5 microM caused excellent inhibition of cell migration for 48 hrs. These results demonstrate the potential of AITC and NAC-AITC as chemopreventive agents".

Taken altogether, Phytochemical Allyl isothiocyanate may be used for the prevention and treatment of liver cancer, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Phytochemical Sulforaphane (Dithiolthiones) Kills Cervical Cancer Cells, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a bioactive compound isolated from cruciferous vegetables for the prevention and treatment of cervical cancer with no side effects, according to studies.

The cervix is an opening passage in the center of the ectocervix, that connects the uterus to the vagina in female reproductive organs. Cervix acts as a transition area for vaginal lining (squamous epithelium) change to uterus type (columnar epithelium) through the transitional area (squamous columnar epithelium) to host the development of the fetus.

Cervical cancer is a medical condition caused by irregular and disordered cell growth in the tissue of the cervix.

Most cases of cervical cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining the cervix. At the early stage, most patients do not experience any symptoms.

However, at the later stage, the overgrowth tumor may suppress the nearby blood vessels and nerve tissue, leading abnormal bleeding and severe abdominal pain.

At this stage, cancerous cells from cervix also can travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organ, through lymph and blood circulation, causing the secondary metastasis.

Most common cervical metastasis includes the vagina, the uterus, the uterus, the tissue nearby lymph nodes in the pelvis, back of the abdomen tissue and ligaments around the cervix and uterus

According to the statistic, cervical cancer is most often diagnosed between the ages of 35 and 44 and only 15% of cervical cancers are diagnosed in women over age 65.

The five years survival rate of invasive cervical cancer is 92% if diagnosed in the early stages.

What causes cervical cells DNA alternation? Researchers do not know. But researchers do know that immune system deficiency, smoking, the increase in age, long-term use of oral contraceptives and exposure to diethylstilbestrol are some of the prevalent risk factors associated with the onset of the disease.

Some researchers also suggested women who have several sexual partners or often change of sexual partners are at increased risk of infected by the Human papillomavirus (HPV), one of the major cause of cervical cancer.

Dr. Diane Cooper, the lead scientist in the cancer researcher in the examine the sexual activity in the risk of cervical cancer of among South African women wrote, "cervical cancer risk is associated with increased sexual activity. Initiatives to encourage later commencement of sex, and limiting the number of sexual partners would have a favorable impact on the risk of cancer of the cervix and other sexually transmitted infections".

These results clearly suggested that women who are sexually active and have a number of sexual partners should take extreme precautions to protect themselves against HPV infection.

Dithiolthiones are phytochemicals in the class of Organosulfides, found abundantly in cruciferous vegetables, garden sorrel, horseradish, etc.

On finding natural chemoprevention which holds great potential for cancer management as lower, clinically tolerable doses of individual agents for the treatment of cervical cancer, the cancer team at the Manipal University examined the effect of combination treatment of sulforaphane (SFN) and eugenol on HeLa cells.

Injection with variable dose combinations of SFN and eugenol showed a significant effect in inducing cell cytotoxicity and apoptosis at the lower and synergistic effect at higher sub-lethal doses to the cancer cells.

Futhermore, application of chemo drugs gemcitabine combined with the low- and high-dose of SFN combinations showed no significant cell death at lower doses compared to that of cell cytotoxicity in gemcitabine alone.

These results clearly suggested that SFN can only elevate the efficiency and lower the dose of certain chemo drugs which act on certain pathways in inducing cytotoxicity and cell death with decreasing side effects.

Additional examination of the effect of SFN and eugenol combinations researchers found that SFN significantly inhibits the expression of the proteins associated with cell proliferation and production of inflammatory cytokines.

Dr. Hussain A, the lead scientists in the final report wrote, "2 (or more) chemopreventive agents can act antagonistically or synergistically necessitating elucidation of possible mechanistic interactions for favorable and reliable outcomes of dietary components in the field of cancer prevention".

Compared to chemo drugs, injection of sulforaphane alone exerted a strong effect in inducing dose-dependent selective cytotoxicity in HeLa cells without causing harm to the to normal cells.

The finding emphasized that the bioactive compound processes a safe cytotoxicity profile compared to conventional chemo medicine.

Also, sulforaphane alone was found to expresse its efficacy through analysis of genes similar to that of SFN and eugenol combination.

In human cervical carcinoma HeLa and hepatocarcinoma HepG2 cells, SFN inhibited the viability of both HeLa and HepG2 cells by inducing apoptosis, observed by the formation of apoptotic bodies and the accumulation of the sub-G1 phase.

In-depth differentiation of SFN activity, researchers discovered that SFN not only induces cell death through the cancer cells cycle arrest but also activates the genes associated with the programming cell death and cell apoptosis by blocking the expression of cell proliferative proteins.

Taken altogether, sulforaphane SFN may be considered a chemo and natural medicine for the prevention and combined with certain primary medicine for the treatment of cervical cancer with a reduced side effect through lowering the dose of the applied chemo drug.

Honey, The Potential Food for Obesity Control

By Kyle J. Norton

On seeking natural therapy with no side effects, scientists may have found a bee based product for the treatment of obesity, according to studies.

Compared to an ideal weight, that reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease,  body weight greater than 20 percent is considered obese.

Obesity is a medical condition caused by excess body fat has accumulated over time, while overweight is a condition of excess body weight relative to the height.

According to the Body Mass Index(BMI), a BMI between 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight, while a BMI of over 30 is an indication of obesity.

Epidemiological studies in the investigation of the complication of obesity found that cardiovascular problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease, accelerated atherosclerosis, and stroke... and chronic lower back pain are most common disease complications associated with obesity.

According to data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), 2013–2014, more than 1 in 3 and 13 adults in the US were considered to have obesity and extreme obesity, respectively.

Although there are many risk factors involved the onset of the disease, some researchers suggested an unhealthy lifestyle is one of the major causes of obesity in the Western world.

Dr. Robert F. Kushner, in the examination of the unhealthy lifestyle risk of obesity of the 53‐item lifestyle pattern questionnaire posted on a commercial weight loss program Web site collected from 2004 through 2008, wrote, "unhealthy lifestyle patterns in diet, exercise, and coping were highly prevalent among this population".

The results findings clearly suggested a strong correlation between diet, exercise, and obesity.

Honey, the rich golden liquid is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The liquid is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

In the urgency to find a natural remedy for the treatment of widespread obesity in the Western world, researchers evaluated the potential of honey consumption in controlling obesity.

The study compared the two local Malaysian honey types: Gelam and Acacia honey activities in reducing excess weight gain and other parameters related to obesity.

Male Sprague-Dawley rats selected to the study were induced obese by a high-fat diet (HFD) prior to introduction with/without honey or orlistat for four weeks.

Rats fed with Gelam honey showed significant reductions in excess weight gain and adiposity index compared to HFD rats.

Furthermore, parameters related to obesity such as levels of plasma glucose, triglycerides, and cholesterol, plasma leptin and resistin, liver enzymes, renal function, and relative organ weight in Gelam and Acacia honey treated groups were reduced significantly, compared to obese rats.

Compared to the treatment of orlistat, Gelam and Acacia honey showed similar results without inducing hepatotoxicity effects.

Hepatotoxicity is a known side effect of orlistat.

Where Orlistat is a drug used for the treatment of obesity, sold over-the-counter as Alli by GlaxoSmithKline in the United Kingdom and the United States.

Dr. Samat S, the lead scientists wrote in the final report, "consumption of honey can be used to control obesity by regulating lipid metabolism and appears to be more effective than orlistat".

Taken altogether, hiney, particularly Gelam and Acacia honey may be considered anti-obesity functional remedies with no side effects, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Artichoke, the Potential Anti Type 2 Diabetes Herbal Remedy with No Side Effects, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Artichoke may be used as a functional remedy for the treatment of type 2 diabetes with no side effects, according to studies.

Type 2 diabetes is a medical disease characterized by not enough insulin in the bloodstream due to dismissed pancreas function or in properly use the insulin of the body.

In other words, type 2 diabetes is caused by the beta cell which is responsible for the production of insulin died off or the clogged up of the insulin receptor sites, which allow the cell to bind with insulin in the blood to transform glucose to energy.

The hallmark of type 2 diabetes is insulin resistance.

Types 2 diabetes is a common disease of adults in the Western world. According to the statistics provided by the by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), over 100 million U.S. adults are now living with diabetes or prediabetes.

And, in 2015, 30.3 million Americans or 9.4 percent of the U.S. population have diabetes.

The disease has caused a significant economic burden in the world. In the US, the annual economic cost for each individual with type 2 diabetes is $11,917.

In fact, the direct diabetes costs in a country’s gross domestic product (GDP) per capita, the USA stood out as having particularly high costs, compared to other countries.

Some researchers suggested that the widespread type 2 diabetes in the overweight population in the US may be correlated to the promotion of the Western diet over the past few decades.

Dr. Lu Qi, and colleagues in the examination of the Western diet in types 2 diabetics wrote, "The Western dietary pattern was not associated with diabetes risk among those with a lower GRS."

And, "In addition, we found that intakes of processed meat, red meat, and heme iron, which characterized the Western dietary pattern, showed significant interactions with GRS in relation to diabetes risk (P for interaction = 0.029, 0.02, and 0.0004, respectively). The diet-diabetes associations were more evident among men with a high GRS (≥12) than in those with a low GRS".

The results indirectly suggested that people who follow the Western diet with a genetic risk score (GRS) are at an increased risk of type 2 diabetes.

Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a liver protective and detoxified agent, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.

Scientists on finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of diabetes examined the artichoke (JA) potential in attenuating lipid disturbances and insulin resistance (IR) in an animal model.

Wistar rats selected to the study were fed a control diet, a 60 % fructose-enriched diet (FRU), or an FRU with 10 % JA (n 6-7) for 4 weeks. An oral glucose tolerance test was carried out on day 21.

Injection of JA showed a significant effect in improving the expression of the genes associated with fibrosis and inflammation and insulin resistance according to the global gene expression analyses and oral glucose tolerance test, respectively.

Dr. Chang WC, the lead scientist after taking into account co and confounder suggested that 10 % JA supplementation may be beneficial for the prevention of the onset of diabetes.

Furthermore, in order to reveal more information about artichoke anti-diabetes effect, researchers conducted a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled study on 60 subjects with impaired fasting glucose (IFG), impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), or newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes.

The selected subjects were randomly assigned to either a group that ingested 40 g of a Jerusalem artichoke and fermented soybean powder mixture (19.45 g each) daily or a group that received a placebo for 12 weeks.

Group treated with supplementation with the Jerusalem artichoke and fermented soybean powder mixture reduced the levels of fasting glucose (p < 0.001) and FFAs (p = 0.034), glucose at 60 min.

According to the homeostasis model assessment, the supplement also inhibits the insulin resistance (p = 0.018), and the urinary 8-epi-prostaglandin F2α (8-epi-PGF2α) level, a marker of free radical-catalyzed lipid peroxidation.

Moreover, the change of glucose at 120 min (r = 0.472, p = 0.027) and the glucose under the curve (AUC) were positively correlated with the reduction of plasma malondialdehyde, an indication of oxidative stress.

The finding clearly suggested the efficacy of the consumption of a Jerusalem artichoke and fermented soybean powder mixture against the overexpression of glucose for 12 weeks, particularly, in the newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes.

Taken altogether, artichoke used alone or combined with other herbal products may be considered functional remedies for the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Ginger, The Natural Anti Oral Cancer Herbal Remedy with No Side Effects

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural remedy for the prevention and treatment of oral cancer with no side effects, according to studies.

Oral cancer also known as mouth cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the tissue of the oral cavity, due to the alternation of cell DNA.

Most cases of oral cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of oral tissue.

However, at the advanced stage, oral cancer cells can travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organs, leading to the secondary metastasis.

According to the statistic provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2018, approximately 51,540 people were diagnosed with oral cavity or oropharyngeal cancer. The disease causes the death of an estimated 10,030 people.

The 5-year survival rate of oral cancer is 66%, including all stages.

Family history, smoking, alcohol drinking, infected by HPV virus, poor hygiene and genetic preposition are some of the risk factors associated with the disease.

Some researchers suggested that oral sex may be one of the major prevalent risk factor involved the development of oral cancer. Dr. Rajiv Saini in the examination of the connection of oral sex and oral cancer, wrote, "The diverse conduit in the oral cavity that provides as a gateway of exposure of infection from the oral cavity to bloodstream include any open sores, cuts, abrasions, or bleeding gum disease such as gingivitis and periodontitis".

"Accumulating molecular and pathologic evidence has strengthened the hypothesis that HPV infection could play a role in the etiology of some oral squamous cell carcinomas.

And, "To reduce the risk of infection during unprotected oral sex, limit exposure to sexual fluids and ensure that no cuts or lesions are present in the mouth or on the genitals. Good oral health, free from bleeding gums, lip sores, cuts, broken skin, and oral epithelium, enormously reduces the chances of transmission of infection among the partners indulging in oral sex".

These results strongly suggested people who perform oral sex before, during and after sexual intercourse may be at risk of oral cancer due to infected by the HPV virus.

Researchers on finding a natural compound for the inhibition of oral cancer examined the [6]-Shogaol ([6]-SHO), a major constituent of ginger anti-tumor activity.

[6]-SHO showed a significant effect in preventing oral squamous cell carcinoma by activating proapoptotic factors in vitro and in vivo experimental model.

In the inflammation and cell proliferation assays, injection of [6]-SHO inhibited the oral cancer cell line through cytotoxicity induced by the expression of proinflammatory cytokines, proteins associated with cell apoptosis and anti-cell survival mechanisms.

Furthermore, in the oral cancer cells, oral administration of [6]-SHO strongly inhibited phosphorylation in stimulating the enzymes which carry energy the cancer cells and enzymes in the degradation of cellular response to inflammation.

Dr. Annamalai G, the lead scientist said, " [6]-SHO is a novel functional agent capable of preventing DMBA induced inflammation and cell proliferation associated tumorigenesis by modulating multiple signaling molecules".

Additionally, in order to reveal more information about 6-Gingerol anti-oral cancer properties, researchers investigated the compound in human oral (SCC4, KB) with or without wortmannin, rapamycin, and cisplatin.

6-Gingerol showed dose-dependent cytotoxicity in the oral cell line.

Combinations of 6-gingerol with wortmannin and cisplatin showed additive effects, while with rapamycin, it showed 50% cytotoxicity equivalent to that of IC50 of 6-gingerol alone.

Treatment with 6-gingerol exhibited S-phase arrest in SCC4 cells. But 6-Gingerol, wortmannin, and rapamycin treatment showed almost two-fold higher expression of proteins associated with cancer cells apoptosis.

Dr. in the final report wrote," 6-gingerol appears to be a safe and potent chemotherapeutic/chemopreventive compound acting through cell cycle arrest and induction of apoptosis in human oral....cells".

Taken altogether, ginger processed bioactive ingredient 6-gingerol and [6]-Shogaol may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of oral cancer, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal cayenne Normalizes the Levels of High Blood Cholesterol with No Side Effects, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Herbal Cayenne processed a high amount of bioactive compound capsaicinoids may have a strong and potential effect in reducing levels of high blood cholesterol, according to studies.

Hyperlipidemia is a condition of abnormally high levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream.

Cholesterol is a waxy substance which is produced either by the liver or injected from animal food sources.

Cholesterol found in our body is needed for our body to build cell walls, hormones, and vitamin D, and create bile salts that aid digestion. However, too much of them, in most cases due to the intake of animal protein can cause plaques built up on the arterial wall, the major cause of heart disease and stroke.

More precisely, if levels of low-density lipoprotein are high compared to high-density lipoprotein which returns the accessed cholesterol back to the liver, you have high blood cholesterol.

In other words, healthy blood cholesterol is any levels with either less than or equal to 4 (low-density lipoprotein/ 1 (high-density lipoprotein).

According to the statistics, in 2015-2016, by age and gender, a total of 12.4 percent of adults aged 20 years and over had high cholesterol in the United States.

Although there are many risk factors such as obesity, large waist circumference, physically inactive, smoking and diabetes associated with the onset of high blood cholesterol, researchers suggested that a poor diet with rich in saturated and trans fat, processed foods is the major cause of high blood cholesterol in the Western world.

Dr. Joan Carles Escolà-Gil and colleagues in the concern about the Western diet pattern in risk of high blood cholesterol wrote, "The HFHC diet caused a significant increase in plasma cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and liver cholesterol and enhanced macrophage-derived [3H]cholesterol flux to feces by 3- to 4-fold, (in tested mice)".

And, " The HFHC diet caused 1.4- and 3-fold increases in [3H]cholesterol efflux to plasma and HDL-derived [3H]tracer fecal excretion".

The results strongly indicated there is a clinical significance of high-fat diet in the increased substantially risk of high blood cholesterol.

Cayenne is also known as Cayenne Pepper, a red, hot chili pepper, belonging to Capsicum annuum, the family Solanaceae, native to sub-tropical and tropical regions.

The herbal medicine has been used in traditional medicine to increases metabolism, enhance circulatory system and stomach and the intestinal tract, adjust blood pressure, lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, treat frostbite, muscles, arthritis, rheumatism, low back pain, strains, sprains, bruises, and neuralgia, etc.

The chemical constituents of Cayenne include capsaicin, capsacutin oil, solaine, xanthenes, oleic acid, palmitic acid, etc.

Researchers on finding a herbal medicine for the treatment of high blood cholesterol examined the antihyperlipidemic effects of capsaicinoids, the active compounds in chili pepper.

Hamsters selected to the study were divided into five groups and fed a high-cholesterol diet containing 0 % (CON), 0.010 % (LD), 0.015 % (MD), 0.020 % (HD), and 0.030 % (VD) capsaicinoids, respectively, for 6 weeks.

Capsaicinoids reduced plasma total cholesterol, non-high-density lipoprotein, and triacylglycerols without affecting the levels of high-density lipoprotein.

Dietary capsaicinoids increased the fecal excretion of total acidic sterols possibly associated with an enzyme which oxidizes cholesterol and inhibited the liver X receptor alpha which was found to raised HDL-cholesterol and increased liver triglycerides in a wild-type mice study.

Furthermore, capsaicinoids not only decreased cholesterol absorption but also improved the levels of expression of COX-2 associated with the accumulation of lipids in circulation and liver, and lipid peroxidation in case of deficiency.

Dr. Liang YT, the lead scientist, after taking into account co and confounders wrote, "Capsaicinoids were beneficial in improving lipoprotein profile and aortic function in hamsters fed a high-cholesterol diet".

Moreover, in female ovariectomized Sprague-Dawley rats, the sham group and OVX control group were fed with high-cholesterol diets, whereas the treatment group (control diet containing 0.01% capsaicinoids) was fed with high-cholesterol plus 0.01% capsaicinoids diet for 21 days.

Injection of capsaicinoids significantly decreased the body weight gain, plasma total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triacylglycerol without affecting the high-density lipoprotein cholesterol in the OVX rats.

These changes in plasma lipoprotein profile were accompanied by a greater excretion of total bile acid in feces and small intestinal contents.

The efficacy of the compound in the inhibition of high blood cholesterol was attributed to the significantly enhanced the expressions of hepatic cholesterol 7α-hydroxylase, an enzyme and receptor potential vanilloid type-1 associated with cholesterol oxidation.

Dr. Zhang L, the lead researchers wrote in the final report, "The hypocholesterolemic activity of capsaicinoids is caused by the stimulating conversion of cholesterol to bile acids by upregulation of cholesterol 7α-hydroxylase expression and the increase in fecal total bile acid excretion".

Taken altogether, herbal cayenne processed major bioactive ingredient capsaicinoids may be considered a function fruit for the prevention and treatment of high blood cholesterol, pending to the
larger sample size and multicenter human study.
