Herbal Butterbur, the Potent Neuro-protective Bioactive Herbal Medicine

By Kyle J. Norton

Herbal Butterbur may have a profound and strong effect on protecting the neuron integrity and validity against the onset of neuro diseases, some scientists suggested.

Neuroprotective effects are the activity which protects neurons of the brain and spinal cord.

A neurologic deficit is a condition of the brain, spinal cord, leading to weaker muscles, nerves or part of the body.

The causes of neurological deficit include genetic disorders, congenital abnormalities or disorders, infections, lifestyle or environmental health problems associated with malnutrition, and brain injury, spinal cord injury or nerve injury.

People of neurologic deficit may experience certain medical conditions and symptoms including partial or complete paralysis, and loss of sensation, seizures, difficulty reading, and writing and walking and decreased alertness.

However, some researchers suggested the most serious symptoms is a  poor cognitive ability, depending on the parts of the brain or spinal cord which have been affected.

According to the statistic provided by the US government, more than 16 million people in the United States are living with cognitive impairment and disease with a tendency to increase at an alarming rate, particularly in the age group of 50 and over.

People with cognitive impairment, according to the report are more than three times as many hospitals stay as individuals who are hospitalized for some other condition, causing a substantial burden to the US health care system.

Out of all neurodegenerative diseases, Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias alone are estimated to be the third most expensive disease to treat in the United States.

The Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures 20106, wrote, “ The average Medicaid payment for a person aged 65 or older with Alzheimer’s or other dementias is nine times higher than that for other beneficiaries in the same age group.”

Butterbur, found in wet, marshy, damp land, including wetland, riverside, forest, etc., is a creeping underground plant, genus Petasites of 15 -20 species, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Northern Hemisphere.

The herbal medicine has been used in herbal medicine used as an pain reliever in the digestive system, including stomach, bile ducts, and duodenum, etc.

The chemical constituents of Butterbur include Petioles, petasitene and pethybrene, quercetin 3-O-beta-D-glucoside, quercetin 3-O-beta-D-6''-O-acetylglucoside, and rutin, caffeic acid, alkaloids, S-petasin and iso-S-petasin, etc.

The Second Military Medical University on finding a natural ingredient or whole food for the treatment of neurologic deficit examine the effect of the total bakkenolides, a bioactive compound isolated from the herbal Butterbur, in vitro cerebral ischemia model and oxygen-glucose deprivation of cultured nerve cells.

Oral administration of total bakkenolides showed a significant immediate effect after reperfusion at doses of 5, 10 and 20 mg/kg markedly reduced brain infarct volume and neurological deficits.

The chemical compound also was found to attenuate cell death and apoptosis in primary cultured neurons subject to 1-h hypoxia followed by 24-h reoxygenation.

The compound also protects the neurons by inhibiting the protein involved production of inflammatory cytokines through blocking activation of the classical activation pathway due to the injury.

Further differentiation of the experiment, researchers discovered that total bakkenolides inhibit the activation of pathways associated with neuron apoptosis.

Dr. the lead scientists after taking into account of co and confounders said, "our results provide a strong pharmacological basis for further understanding the potential therapeutic role of total bakkenolides in cerebral ischemic disease and shed new light on its neuroprotective mechanism".

Moreover, in the examine the neurologic deficit effects of 4 novel bakkenolides - bakkenolide-Ia ( 1), bakkenolide-IIa ( 2), bakkenolide-IIIa ( 3) and bakkenolide-IVa ( 4) isolated from the extract of the rhizome of Petasites tricholobus, researchers showed the compounds 1 - 4 exert a significantly neuroprotective activity in primary cultured neurons exposed to oxygen-glucose deprivation and oxidative insults by enhancing the antioxidant activity.

According to the VITRO assay, all these compounds exhibited significant neuroprotective and antioxidant activities.

The findings strongly suggested total bakkenolides and its derivative demonstrate neurologic deficits protective effects through blocking the mechanisms involved neuron cells apoptosis through their antioxidant property.

Taken altogether, herbal Butterbur processed bioactive compounds such as bakkenolides may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of neurologic deficits.

Herbal Andrographis, the Potential Anti Gastric Ulcer Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural plant for the prevention and treatment of gastric ulcer with no side effects, according to studies.

Gastric ulcer is a condition of localized tissue erosion in the lining the stomach.

Most cases of the gastric ulcer are associated with the infection with the bacterium Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) and long-term use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

If you are experiencing the persistent symptoms of dull pain in the stomach, nausea or vomiting bloating, acid reflux heartburn, a burning sensation in the chest pain that may improve when you eat, drink and black color of stool due to bleeding, you may have a gastric ulcer. Please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

In serious cases, patients may also develop anemia and vomit blood.

According to the statistic, Peptic ulcer disease (PUD) is a very common disorder in the US, affecting over 4 million people each year.

In the study compared the bacterial infection in patients with duodenal ulcers and gastric ulcer, researchers showed prevalence of H. pylori in antral mucosa was higher in patients with duodenal ulcers (81.5%) than in patients with gastric ulcer and non-ulcer dyspepsia (56% and 52.8%) (P<0.05) and the detection of gastric ulcer is lower compared to duodenal ulcers.

Furthermore, Among patients with antibody to H. pylori, H. pylori were detected in 85.7% of patients with duodenal ulcer, 62.5% of patients with gastric ulcers and 22.2% of patients with non-ulcer dyspepsia(p<0.05).

These results clearly suggested that bacterial H. pylori are the main culprit to ulcers in the digestive system, an indication of adaptive immune defenses against infection and inflammation.

Andrographis paniculata is also known as Andrographis is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic for the treatment of common cold, flu, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia, swollen lymph nodes, leprosy, bronchitis, sore throats, tuberculosis, chicken pox, etc.

Besides the main ingredient andrographolides, giving the plant a bitter taste, herbal Andrographis also processes ingredients of diterpene lactones, such as neoandrographolide, andrographiside, 14-doexy-11, 12-didehydro andrographolide, etc., flavonoinds viz., oroxylin, wogonin, andrographidines A, B, C, D, E, F.

In order to find an effective natural compound for the treatment of gastric cancer with no side effects, researchers evaluated the gastroprotective property of andrographolide, a chief component of the leaves of Andrographis paniculata in terms of the ulcer preventive effect in rats.

The dose responsive study was conducted in rats pretreated with andrographolide (1, 3 and 5 mg/kg) for a period of 30 days, prior to ulcer induction by administering ethanol, aspirin or by pyloric ligation.

During the experiment, researchers found the LD(50) value was found to be 48 mg/kg b. wt and the effective dose was found to be 3 mg/kg.

Application of andrographolide showed an increasing level of the pH and decrease in titrable acidity observed in the gastric fluid of rats pretreated with the test drug.

Andrographolide reduced the expression of the gastric tissue H(+)-K(+) ATPase, an enzyme which functions to acidify the stomach. and myeloperoxidase activities that were elevated in ulcer-induced animals.

Furthermore, the antioxidants and mucin levels were significantly maintained in the gastric tissue of drug-pretreated animals. No toxicity was found in the tested rats.

After taking into account of co and confounders, researchers wrote in the final report, "the ulcer preventive efficacy of andrographolide may probably due to its antioxidant, cytoprotective and antiacid secretory effects".

Additonally, in a study of pretreated with HAEAP (100,200,500mg/kg b. wt for 30 days) and then gastric ulcers were induced by ethanol, aspirin, pylorus ligation, and cold restraint stress models firmly supported the use of a hydroalcoholic extract of Andrographispaniculata (HAEAP) for treatment of gastric ulcers.

Also,  the ulcer score was found to be low in HAEAP-pretreated rats, particularly at the dose of 200 mg/kg b.wt. and the tested drug significantly reduced the acidity, pepsin concentration, myeloperoxidase, and H(+)K(+)ATPase activities in ethanol-administered rats as of that in the previous study.

More importantly, the tested drug also normalized the elevated TBARS, formed as a byproduct of lipid peroxidation, overexpression of free radicals and decreased glutathione (GSH), the antioxidant enzymes produced by the host and mucin levels.

Taken altogether, herbal Andrographis may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of gastric ulcer, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Aloe Vera, the Promising Anti Skin Diseases Functional Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a herbal plant for the treatment of skin diseases with no side effects, according to studies.

Skin diseases are conditions of skin damage and classified according to each pathogenic causes.

Most cases of skin disease are involved allergens, irritants. However certain medical conditions such as irritable bowel disease, autoimmune diseases, and genetic preposition can also cause r skin diseases.

Recent studies suggested that a poor diet is also associated with the onset of skin diseases such as the dermatological disease may be linked to systemic disease, and dietary changes may affect health outcomes, as in psoriasis.

Dr. Rajani Katta and colleagues in the dermatological disease team at the Baylor College of Medicine said, " In this review, the authors focus on conditions for which the role of diet has traditionally been an underappreciated aspect of therapy".

"In some cases, dietary interventions may influence the course of the skin disease, as in acne. In others, dietary change may serve as one aspect of prevention, such as in skin cancer and aging of the skin"

" In others, Lastly, systemic medications prescribed for dermatological diseases, such as steroids, are known to raise the risk of other diseases, and dietary change may reduce this risk".

These results clearly suggested that by reducing intake of pro-inflammatory food such as fried and process foods and red meats and increasing certain anti-inflammatory foods such as tuna, salmon, garlic into your diet can be helpful in reducing the risk and treatment of skin diseases.

Aloe Vera is species of succulent plant in the genus Aloe, belonging to the Family Xanthorrhoeaceae, native to Sudan.

It has become very popular for commercial cultivation due to its health benefits. Aloe vera has been used in herbal medicine in treating many kinds of disease, including wound, burn healing, minor skin infections, sebaceous cysts, diabetes, and elevated of cholesterol, etc.

The herbal plant is also one of many popular herbs studied in scientific ways with some conflicting results.

The ten main areas of chemical constituents of Aloe vera include amino acids, anthraquinones, enzymes, minerals, vitamins, lignins, monosaccharide, polysaccharides, salicylic acid, saponins, and sterols.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient or remedy for the treatment of skin diseases, researchers at examined all dermatology-oriented in vitro and in vivo experiments and clinical trials on aloe vera preparations.

According to the 40 studies selected for the investigation, oral administration of aloe vera in mice is effective on wound healing in inducing the decrease of the number and size of papillomas.

Furthermore, injection of Aloe vera also exhibited anti-tumor and parasitic effects in reducing the incidence of tumors and leishmania parasitemia by >90% in the liver, spleen, and bone marrow.

The herbal medicine was found to exerted certain skin protective effects against psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, frostbite, burn, wound healing and inflammation.

Moreover, the topical gel from Aloe vera can be considered a biological vehicle and an anti-microbial and antifungal agent against skin infection and inflammation.

However, contrary to general belief, topical application of aloe vera was not effective in the prevention of radiation-induced injuries and sunburn or suntan protection.

The results firmly suggested that Aloe vera showed some promising results for diverse dermatologic conditions.

Taken altogether, herbal Aloe vera may be used as a topical or oral administration agent for the prevention and combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of skin diseases, pending to the reconfirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Thyme Honey, the Potential Anti Endometrial Cancer Functional Food

By Kyle J. Norton

Honey may have a significant effect on reducing risk and treatment of endometrial cancer, some scientists suggested.

Endometrial cancer is a chronic condition characterized by the irregular cell in the tissue of the endometrium.

Most cases of endometrial cancer start on the cells in the surface of the inner lining of the endometrium. At the advanced stage, after penetrating into the deeper layers, malignant cancer cells may travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organs.

Endometrial cancer has been found to metastasize to the rectum, bladder, pelvic and para-aortic lymph nodes, vagina.

The exact causes of endometrial cancer are unknown. Epidemiological studies suggested that the increase in age,  more years of menstruation, never been pregnant, obesity and use of hormone therapy are some the major prevalent risk factors associated with endometrial cancer.

Some researchers indicated that hormone change in the women body such as higher androgen and estrogen levels and lower levels of progesterone due to polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOs) also is a major cause of endometrial cancer.

Dr. Navaratnarajah R, the lead author in the concern of the association of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOs) and the risk endometrial cancer, said, "several studies have been published that appear to support this association, and it is common practice among gynecologists and physicians to prescribe hormonal treatment to reduce this perceived risk".

"The mechanism(s) underlying any association is also unclear, but it is again widely assumed that chronic anovulation, which results in continuous estrogen stimulation of the endometrium unopposed by progesterone, is a major factor".

These result clearly state that long-term overexpression of estrogen and reduced levels of progesterone are associated with the onset of the diseases. However, the study of PCOs in the endometrial cancer risk should also be taken into accounts of obesity, hyperinsulinemia, and hyperandrogenism, which are also features of PCOS and risk factors for endometrial carcinoma.

In the association of PCOs and endometrial cancer mortality, the doctor team indicated, there is no evidence to link the increased mortality from endometrial cancer in women with the syndrome.

The study once again reaffirms the link of the estrogen therapy used in menopause women for the treatment of climate symptoms. In other words, long-term high levels of estrogen compared to progesterone in the body is the major cause of endometrial cancer.

Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid It is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

On finding a natural ingredient or whole food for the prevention and treatment of endometrial cancer, researchers examined the honey influence the oestrogenic activity.

The chemical composition and the potential of Greek honey extracts (thyme, pine and fir honey) were classified to evaluate the most inhibitory activity against the endometrial cancer cells Ishikawa line.

Compared to other honey, thyme honey processes a highest total phenolics, phenolic acids, and hydroxymethylfurfural.

Thyme honey inhibited the expression of Ishikawa by reducing the cancer cells viability.

Moreover, application of thyme honey also exerted a significant effect against Ishikawa and other cancer cell lines by inhibiting the cancer cell proliferation, inducing apoptosis and cell cycle arrest.

Futhermore, the inhibition of Thyme honey also found to associated with its function in the mediation of estrogen via modulation of the estrogen receptor activity, as estrogen agonists or antagonists in cancer cell lines on a tissue type-specific manner.

The efficacy of thyme honey anti endometrial cancer was probably associated with its polyphenols and phenolic acids (vanillic acid and protocatechuic acid and p10 hydroxybenzoic acid) as these compounds have been proven  to inhibit cancer-related pathways and processes

These results indicated that thyme honey monitored cell proliferation may be useful in cancer prevention, particularly, in endometrial cancer, though it's agonists/antagonists properties.

Dr. Mari Jaakkola, the lead scientist in the conclusion of the study said, " honey, especially the thyme honey, may be used as an alternative to sugar, while its incorporation in the human diet or as a food ingredient may prevent cancer-related processes, promoting thus the health of consumers".

Taken altogether, Thyme honey processed major bioactive compounds  polyphenols and phenolic acids may be considered a functional food for the prevention and combined with other primary therapy for the treatment of endometrial cancer without inducing any side effects

Monofloral Honey, the Potential Anti- Human immunodeficiency virus HIV-1 Functional Foods

By Kyle J. Norton

Honey may have a profound effect in reducing the risk and treatment of HIV-1, some scientists suggested.

Human immunodeficiency virus HIV-1 is the most widespread type worldwide that can lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a chronic condition caused by the infection of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

According to epidemiological studies, people who serval sexual partners are the most at risk of HIV infection.

However, the virus can also transmit through infected blood transfusion, infected mother to children.

Most people infected by the HIV virus may experience symptoms of fever, muscle aches and joint pain similar to those of influenza in the early stage of the viral attacks.

At the final stage of the infection, the virus can weaken the immune system to the point that causes the onset of AIDS and induces more severe symptoms including the general symptoms of cancers accompanied by soaking night sweats, recurring fever and persistent white spots or unusual lesions on your tongue or in your mouth.

Dr. Seth C Kalichman and colleagues in the infectious team, in the concern of the risk of HIV in people with multiple sexual partners in the examining the 209 HIV positive men and 291 HIV positive women recruited conveniently from HIV/AIDS support groups and antiretroviral clinics found that  63% and 309 (62%) participants were currently sexually active, of whom 247 (80%) reported only one sex partner in the previous 3 months and 62 (20%) reported two or more partners during that time".

Although the use of a condom may have some protective effects in the prevention of HIV transmitting disease, however,  the team said, "Steady sex partners of participants with multiple partnerships were significantly less likely to be protected by condoms than steady partners of individuals with only one sex partner".

Dangerously, at the final report, the team wrote, "individuals with multiple sex partners were also significantly less likely to have disclosed their HIV status".

Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid It is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

On finding a natural ingredient or whole food for the inhibition of human immunodeficiency virus HIV-1 before they can cause acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), researchers evaluated the anti-HIV-1 activity of eight different kinds of honey.

The tested Monofloral Iranian honey from eight floral sources was analyzed to determine their anti-HIV-1 activities as well as their effects on lymphocyte proliferation.

According to the quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay and high pure viral nucleic acid kit, 6 out of 8 monofloral kinds of honey from Petro selinum sativum, Nigella sativa, Citrus sinensis, Zataria multiflora, Citrus aurantium, and Zizyphus mauritiana flowers exerted a significantly inhibitory HIV-1 activity at different doses.

The half maximal effective concentration (EC50) values of 6 out of 8 monofloral kinds of honey are 37.5, 88, 70, 88, 105 and 5 µg/ml respectively.

The monofloral Iranian kinds of honey from Astragalus gummifer and Chamaemelum Nobile flowers had a weak anti-HIV-1 activity, compared to others.

The frequency and intensity of cluster of differentiation CD4 expression on Peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) increased in the presence of all honey types, an indication of immune activity.

Peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) are round nucleus peripheral blood cells consisted of lymphocytes (T cells, B cells, NK cells) and CD4 cells or T4 helpers play critical roles to send signals to other types of immune cells with a function to destroy invasive pathogens.

Treatment with monofloral kinds of honey from Z. multiflora and N. sativa also increased the CD19 markers for normal and neoplastic B cells.

According to the spectroscopic analysis, monofloral kinds of honey from P. sativum, N. sativa, Z. multiflora, and Z. mauritiana flowers processed a potency to be anti-HIV-1 agents.

In-depth differentiation, researchers showed that the inhibitory effect of methylglyoxal is higher on the late stage of HIV-1 infection.

The chemical compound found to exert the anti-HIV-1 activity was methylglyoxal.

Taken altogether, monofloral kinds of honey containing high amounts bioactive compound methylglyoxal may be considered a functional food for the prevention of HIV-1 infection and combined with the primary therapy for the treatment of AIDs.

Ginger, The Natural Alternative Antibiotic for The Treatment of Parasite Infection.

By Kyle J. Norton

Ginger may be the next pharmaceutical target to identify the natural ingredient or whole food for the treatment of diseases caused by a bacterial infection, some studies found.

Infection is a medical condition caused by bacteria multiplication after entering the body.

During the acute phase of infection before the bacteria enter the body, white blood cells of the systematic immune response to the bodily injury and damage by activating not only the emergency repair system to cover the wound through coagulation but also stimulating the proteins associated with the production of proinflammatory cytokines to kill off the invaded pathogens.

However, in many instances, overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines can cause damage or death od nearby cells, leading to improper healing with the formation of scars.

In fact, failure to switch from the phase of production of proinflammatory cytokines to anti-inflammatory can interrupt the healing process, leading to chronic wound and inflammation.

Some researchers suggested that the failure of the switches may be caused by the weakened immune system that can not kill off all foreign invaders within 3 to 8 weeks.

Researcher continued, our immune system has evolved over thousands of year with an aim to kill off all stimuli and pathogens within a said of time, otherwise, they will adapt to the change, causing low-grade inflammation that cannot be reversed in many diseases such as type 2 diabetes and RA.

Most cases of acute infection were blocked in the first phase of the immune system response. In other words, the white blood cells won, pathogens were destroyed and the wound started to recover process without interruption.

However, if the pathogens won, after entering in the body, they can initiate infection through the stage of incubation where bacterial multiplying in the specific tissues and organs, leading to the colonization and in facilitating diseases development.

Patients with acute bacterial infection usually recover in a short period of time within 3 weeks.

Severely, if the immune system can not get rid of the invaders in the said time, some bacterial pathogens will establish life-long chronic infections by persistent establishment after an acute infection period.

Dr. Cierny G 3rd, the lead scientist, at the RE Orthopaedics, said," Failure of an acute inflammatory response to resolve a wound infection heralds a cascade of events that affect the host and pathogens, culminating in a chronic, refractory condition".

"The factors contributing to this outcome include immune compromise of the host, antimicrobial resistance, wound-healing deficiencies, and the adherence of pathogens to themselves and wound surfaces via an impenetrable, resistant biofilm.".

These results firmly suggested that if you have a weakened immune system you have a substantially increased risk of chronic bacterial infection.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

On finding a natural ingredient or whole food for the prevention and treatment of infection with little or no side effects researchers evaluated the effects of ginger against the monogenean parasite Gyrodactylus turnbulli.

The tested ethanolic and aqueous extracts were prepared for freeze-dried ginger.

An increase in extract concentration was associated with reduced time to parasite immobilization.

Injection at concentrations of 5 and 40ppt ethanolic extract induced parasites death at 26.1±0.7 and 4.9±0.3min, respectively.  The ethanolic extract was more efficient. At 75 and 200ppt aqueous ginger extract, induced parasites died at 65.6±2.8 and 1.8±0.2min, respectively.

Bathing G. turnbulli-infected fish in the ethanolic ginger extract (i.e. 5 and 7.5ppt for 90 and 30min, respectively) significantly reduced infection prevalence and intensity.

The higher concentration (i.e. 7.5ppt) proved to be effective as those of Praziquantel, the conventional chemical.

Interestingly, oral treatments of G. turnbulli-infected guppies with diets supplemented with 10 and 20% ginger powder also proved to be ineffective in decreasing parasite load.

Furthermore, in schistosome mansonii infected mice, extract given daily for 45 days beginning at either 2nd day or 45 days post-infection showed a reduction of worm burden and the egg load in the liver and intestine which coincided with the reduction in granuloma diameters.

Ginger extract exerted a potential effect in reducing some inflammatory mediators that play a crucial role in schistosomal liver fibrosis and its complications.

The in-depth analysis also suggested that ginger extract also minimizes the deleterious effects of inflammatory and oxidative stress markers in the tested mice.

Taken altogether, ginger extracts with the abundant bioactive compound may be used for the prevention and treatment of parasite infected diseases, pending to the larger and multi-center human study.

Phytochemical Sulforaphane (Dithiolthiones) and Breast cancer, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Researchers may have found a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer with no side effects, according to studies.

Breast cancer is a medical condition associated with the abnormal cell growth in the breast tissue due to the alternation of cell DNA.

Most cases of the breast cancer (malignant breast neoplasm) start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the tissues of the breast either from the milk ducts (Ductal carcinoma) or the lobules (Lobular carcinoma) that supply the ducts with milk.

At the early stage of breast cancer, most patients experience the forming of lumps or modules on the breast or nearby breast tissue.

However, at the later stage, patients may experience symptoms of swelling of all or part of a breast, breast or nipple pain, nipple retraction and large lumps on the breast.

Some invasive breast cancer in this stage can also induce secondary metastasis through the blood and fluids circulation.

According to the statistic, women diagnosed with breast cancer at stage 0 and 1 have the 5 years of the survival rate of 100%. In 2010, over 250,000 new cases of breast cancer were expected to be diagnosed in the U.S. alone and the risk of getting invasive breast cancer during lifetime of a woman is 1/8.

Therefore self-examination every month may be important to all women who are classified into the higher prevalent risk group.

The causes of breast cancer are unknown. Epidemiological studies suggested that age, gender, race, family history and menstrual, l and reproductive history are some of the prevalent risk factors for breast cancer.

Some researchers suggested that risk breast cancer in women who carry the mutated genes BRCA1 and 2 have 60%  for the development of breast cancer before the age of 90.

Dithiolthiones are phytochemicals in the class of Organosulfides, found abundantly in cruciferous vegetables, garden sorrel, horseradish, etc.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient for the treatment of breast cancer, researchers at the University of Michigan evaluated sulforaphane, a natural compound derived from broccoli/broccoli sprouts, efficacy in inhibiting breast cancer stem cells (CSCs) in tumor growth upon cell reimplantation in secondary mice and human breast cancer cell line.

Sulforaphane injection of (1-5 micromol/L) decreased the cancer cells by 65% to 80% in human breast cancer cells and reduced the size and number of primary mammospheres by 8- to 125-fold and 45% to 75% in tested mice, respectively.

Daily injection with 50 mg/kg sulforaphane for 2 weeks reduced breast cancer cell in the human cell line by >50%.

Sulforaphane eliminated breast CSCs in vivo, and in the secondary mice.

Furthermore, by assessing the effect of SFN alone and in combination with a chemotherapeutic agent, gemcitabine, on the proliferative potential of MCF-7 cells, researchers also found that SFN shows cytotoxic effects on MCF-7 cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner via an apoptotic mode of cell death.

A combinational treatment of SFN and gemcitabine on MCF-7 cells resulted in growth inhibition in a synergistic manner with a combination index.

The efficacy of SFN against MCF-7 was attributed to the inhibition associated with the anti-apoptotic and inflammatory gene, in a time-dependent manner, without causing harm to the nearby healthy cells.

Taken altogether, phytochemical sulforaphane may be considered a bioactive compound for the prevention and combined with primary therapy for the treatment of breast cancer.
