Herbal Aloe Vera, a Potent Mouth Wash for the Prevention and Treatment of Gingivitis with No Side Effects

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a low-cost natural gel or mouthwash with no side effects, according to the studies.

Gingivitis is a condition characterized by the inflammation of gum or gum disease.

Most causes of gingivitis in the general population are associated with long-term poor hygiene.

However, People who are smoking and chewing tobacco, having certain medical conditions such as diabetes or consuming oral contraceptives, steroids, anticonvulsants, calcium channel blockers are also at a higher risk of gingivitis.

Untreated gingivitis can lead to a serious infection of periodontitis, the major causes of tooth loss in adults, according to the American Dental Association.

Most cases of untreated gingivitis can also induce complications of bad breath, persistent gum bleeding, and receding gums.

Treatments of gingivitis are to control the infection and totally depending on the stages of the disease. However, regardless of the type of treatment, patients are all required to keep up good daily care at home.

People who smoke or tobacco chewing in some cases may be advised to quit or reduce the amount of intake per day.

Aloe Vera is species of succulent plant in the genus Aloe, belonging to the Family Xanthorrhoeaceae, native to Sudan. It has become very popular for commercial cultivation due to its health benefits. Aloe vera has been used in herbal medicine in treating many kinds of disease, including wound, burn healing, minor skin infections, sebaceous cysts, diabetes, and elevated of cholesterol, etc.

The herbal plant is also one of many popular herbs studied in scientific ways with some conflicting results.

The ten main areas of chemical constituents of Aloe vera include amino acids, anthraquinones, enzymes, minerals, vitamins, lignins, monosaccharide, polysaccharides, salicylic acid, saponins, and sterols.

With an aim to find a natural compound for the prevention and treatment of gingivitis with no side effects, researchers at the University of Fortaleza examined the effect of Aloe vera in a randomized, parallel and double-blind clinical trial.

The study included 30 participants randomly allocated to the test group (n=15) dentifrice containing Aloe vera - or the control group (n=15) - fluoridated dentifrice and participants were asked to brush their teeth with the control or test dentifrice, three times a day, during a 30-day period.

According to the Plaque index (PI) and gingival bleeding index (GBI) assessed at days 0 and 30, a significant reduction on plaque and gingivitis in both groups, but no statistically significant difference was observed among them.

The result suggested that the dentifrice containing Aloe vera exerted the similar effects as that of fluoridated dentifrice against plaque and gingivitis.

Furthermore, a total of 45 patients who were diagnosed with plaque-induced gingivitis included in the study. were divided into three groups with fifteen patients in each group to evaluate the effects of Aloe vera.

Group 1 was asked to rinse with 10 ml of aloe vera mouthwash twice daily for three months. Group 2 were treated with scaling only. Group 3 patients were asked to rinse with aloe vera mouthwash and scaling was done.

According to the data obtained at the baseline, end of the first month, and the end of the third month, all three groups showed a significant reduction in gingival inflammation. Aloe vera mouthwash showed the greatest effect compared to other groups.

The results were attributed to the Aloe vera anti-inflammatory activity.

Dr.Ajmera N, the lead scientist said, "it (Aloe vera) can be used as an adjunct to mechanical therapy for treating plaque-induced gingivitis".

Taken altogether, herbal Aloe vera may be used as a mouthwash for the prevention and treatment of gingivitis with on side effects

Phytochemical Sulforaphane (Dithiolthiones), the Best for the Prevention and Treatment of Lung Diseases

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a bioactive compound for the prevention and treatment of lung diseases with no side effects, according to studies.

Lung diseases are medical conditions, affecting the upper respiratory tract, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli, pleura and pleural cavity, and the nerves and muscles of breathing.

People with lung diseases have breathing problems, preventing them to get enough oxygen for the body needs.

According to the statistic from the World Health Organization, respiratory diseases are leading causes of death and disability in the world. chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma are 2 of the most common respiratory disease in the world, affecting 65 million and 334 million people, respectively.

3 million people die from the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)  each year, making it the third leading cause of death worldwide. And 14% of 334 million people suffer from asthma are children.

Long-term smoking is considered one of the leading risk factor of lung diseases. Other risk factors associated with the onset of lung diseases include radon, Asbestos, second-hand smoke, and air pollution.

Depending on the are of the respiratory system effect. Lung diseases can be classified to
* Lung disease affecting the airway include asthma and COPD.

*Lung diseases affecting the air sac include pneumonia and tuberculosis.

* Lung diseases affecting the interstitium include interstitial lung disease.

* Lung diseases affecting the blood vessel include pulmonary embolism (PE).

* Lung diseases affecting the pleura include pleural effusion.

* Lung affecting the chest wall include obesity

Dithiolthiones are phytochemicals in the class of Organosulfides, found abundantly in cruciferous vegetables, garden sorrel, horseradish, etc.

With an aim to find a natural compound for the treatment of lung diseases researchers examined the effects of sulforaphane (SF) in the protein Nuclear factor-like 2 (Nrf2) in mice from arsenic-induced toxicity.
Where Nuclear factor-like 2 has been found to protect the body against a broad spectrum of diseases induced by environmental exposure to harmful substances through its detoxed activity.

Selected mice were exposed to 2 weeks of arsenic-containing dust. At the end of 2 weeks, tested mice showed pathological alterations, oxidative DNA damage, and mild apoptotic cell death in the lung.

Pretreatment of sulforaphane activated the expression of Nrf2 only blocked the alternation caused by arsenic-containing dust but also restored all the damages induced by the substances.

Furthermore, SF-mediated activation of Nrf2 also alleviated inflammatory responses by modulating cytokine production, thus reducing the oxidative stress in the tested mice.

These results clearly suggested that dietary intervention which targets the Nrf2 activation may have a significant effect in the reduction of adverse health effects associated with arsenic exposure.

In the mouse model, activation of NRF2 protein was also found to regulate the rhythmic expression of antioxidant genes involved in glutathione redox homeostasis in the mouse lung.

Moreover, in vivo bleomycin-induced lung fibrosis model, pretreatment of SF restored the lung function by blocking the phenotype caused by bleomycin.

According to the observation of the lungs of the arrhythmic Clock(Δ19) mice, SF increased the levels of NRF2 and glutathione, the antioxidants enzymes produced by the host mice.

The results suggested that NRF2 activated by SF not only inhibited the oxidative damage but also protect the tested mice lung against fibrositis.

Dr. Pekovic-Vaughan V, the lead scientist, after taking into account co and confounders, said, "Our findings reveal a pivotal role for the circadian control of the NRF2/glutathione pathway in combating oxidative/fibrotic lung damage, which might prompt new chronotherapeutic strategies for the treatment of human lung diseases, including idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis".

However, in wildtype neonatal mice exposed to hyperoxia. SF also found to activated Nrf2 activation through induced expression of anti-oxidant genes but did not attenuate alveolar growth arrest caused by exposure to hyperoxia.

These discovery strong suggested that activation of activated Nrf2 may have a certain limit in protecting the lung and lung tissues against alveolar growth exposed to an excess supply of oxygen (O2) or higher than the normal partial pressure of oxygen.

Taken altogether, depending on the types of lung diseases, bioactive compound sulforaphane may be used for the prevention and combined with the primary therapy for the treatment of lung diseases with no side effects.

Phytochemical Allicin, the Bioactive Compound with Anti Gastric Cancer Potential

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural and single ingredient for the prevention and treatment of gastric cancer with no side effects, according to the studies.

Gastric cancer is a condition caused by abnormal growth of the mucus-producing cells of the inside lining of the stomach. Adenocarcinoma is the most common type of stomach cancer.

At the later stage, liver cancer cells may travel a distance away from the liver to infect other healthy tissue, leading to secondary metastasis through blood and fluids circulation.

According to the American Cancer Society, every year, approximately 26,000 cases of stomach cancer will be diagnosed (16,000 in men and 9,000 in women). The cancer causes the death of over10,000 people, including 6,000 men and 4,000 women).

The cause of gastric cancer is a result of the alternation of cell DNA in the stomach. Researchers do not know what causes the cell DNA alternation, but they do know certain risk factors such as smoking, family history, genetic preposition, certain diseases associated with the stomach and previous stomach surgery are involved the onset of the disease.

However, some researchers suggested that infection caused by Helicobacter pylori is the most important risk factor for gastric cancer.

Dr. Lydia E. Wroblewski, the lead author examined the effects of Helicobacter pylori in the risk of gastric cancer wrote, "Helicobacter pylori is a gastric pathogen that colonizes approximately 50% of the world's population. Infection with H. pylori causes chronic inflammation and significantly increases the risk of developing duodenal and gastric ulcer disease and gastric cancer".

And, "Infection with H. pylori is the strongest known risk factor for gastric cancer, which is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide".

Allicin is phytochemical containing sulfur in the class of organosulfur compound, found abundantly in onion and garlic.

With an aim to find the natural compound for the treatment of gastric cancer with no side effects, researchers evaluated the allicin, an active compound derived from garlic anti-cancer effects.

Allicin injection reduced cell viability in a dose- and time-dependent manner, partly through induction of apoptosis in gastric cancer cells.

At the molecular level, allicin induced cancer death through degradation of cancer cells through activation of the proteins associated with the stimulation of cell apoptosis, including the caspase-3, -8, and -9 and Bax and fas expression.

Allicin treatment also inhibited proliferation and induced apoptosis in SGC-7901 cancer cells.

Dr. the lead researcher said, "Data from the current study demonstrated that allicin should be further investigated as a novel cancer preventive or therapeutic agent in control of gastric cancer, with potential uses in other tumor types".

In a total of patients with progressive gastric adenocarcinoma, whose diagnosis was by gastroscopy and pathological examination assigned to 2 groups, 40 in each group, researchers examined the effects of local application of allicin via gastroscopy on progressive gastric carcinoma.

Allicin group showed the cell apoptosis rate of 9.60 +/- 1.52%, the percentage of cell in G0/G1 phase of 72.12 +/- 8.35%, in G2/M phase 9.54 +/- 3.20%, and PI 27.80 +/- 8.35, compared to the rate of 2.20 +/- 0.58%, 69.56 +/- 5.15%, 13.20 +/- 3.05%, and 30.40 +/- 5.15 in control.

The efficacy of allicin was attributed to the inhibition of the function of a protein (gene Bcl-2) associated with cancer cell anti-apoptosis and exhibition of the function of proteins (gene Bax and Fas) associated with the pro-apoptosis.

These results suggested that local application of allicin via gastroscopy can inhibit the cell growth and proliferation of progressive gastric carcinoma, and can also promote gastric carcinoma cell apoptosis, according to the final report by Fourth Affiliated Hospital of Hebei Medical University.

Taken altogether, phytochemical allicin may be considered a bioactive compound for the prevention and combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of gastric cancer

Phytochemicals Phytic Acid, the Anti Prostate cancers Bioactive Compound

By Kyle J. Norton

Phytochemicals phytic acid may be the next generation natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer, some scientists found.

Cancer is a class of diseases in which a group of cells growing and multiplying disordered and uncontrollable way in our body.

As cancer continued proliferation, at certain stages it can damage other healthy tissues. Sometimes cancer cell can spread to other organs in the body via lymph or blood.

Prostate cancer is a medical condition caused by the alternation of the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the prostate tissue.

Most prostate cancers are slow growing and enlarged prostate and prostate cancer may be detected during the physical (rectum) exams.

According to the statistic, approximately, 1 man in 9 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime and  6 cases in 10 are diagnosed in men aged 65 or older.

Prostate cancer shared common symptoms of enlarged prostate, including frequent urination particularly at night, weak or interrupted urine flow and erectile dysfunction.

Symptoms which are not found in enlarged prostate include blood in the urine and blood in the seminal fluid.

If you are experiencing  some of the above symptoms, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of prostate cancer

The causes of prostate cancer are unknown.  The increases with age, especially after age 50. family history. ethnicity, hereditary breast, and ovarian cancer (HBOC) syndrome and genetic proposition are some risks actors associated with the onset of the disease.

Some researchers suggested that a poor diet is one of the major risk factor found in patients with the disease.

Dr. Amir Bagher, the lead scientist evaluated the dietary patterns and risk of prostate cancer wrote, "After adjustment for potential confounders, a healthy dietary pattern was associated with decreased risk of prostate cancer (highest versus lowest tertile OR:0.24; 95% CI: 0.07-0.81; trend p: 0.025). An unhealthy dietary pattern was related to increased risk of prostate cancer(highest versus lowest tertile OR:3.4; 95% CI: 1.09-10.32; trend p: 0.037)".

And, "an unhealthy dietary pattern was associated with an increased risk of prostate cancer. However, a healthy dietary pattern was associated with a decreased risk of prostate cancer".

The results strongly suggested that by following a healthy diet pattern, one can substantially reduce the risk of prostate cancer.

Phytic acid (Inositol hexaphosphate) are phytochemicals of the organic acid found abundantly in nuts, sesame seeds, soybeans, wheat, pumpkin, beans, almonds, etc.

On finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of prostate cancer with no side effects, researchers assessed the effects of phytic acid (inositol hexakisphosphate (IP6)) on the activation of phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)-Akt pathway in promoting survival, proliferation, and angiogenesis in human prostate cancer cells.

In invasive human prostate cancer, PC-3 and C4-2B cells, IP6 treatment of cells suppressed proliferation, induced apoptosis through protein associated with the apoptotic and cell death programming pathways.

Phytic acid also inhibited cancer cells through protein associated with cancer cell growth, proliferation, differentiation, motility.

Furthermore, IP6 inhibited transcription and cell migration. through cell cycle arrest at the G1 phase.

Dr. Gu M, the lead scientist, after taking into account co and confounders said, " IP6 suppresses cell survival, proliferation, and angiogenesis but induces death in prostate cancer cells, which might have translational potential in preventing and controlling the growth of advanced and aggressive prostate cancer for which conventional chemotherapy is not effective".

In advanced and androgen-independent human PCa PC-3, Treatment of PC-3 cells with 2 mM IP6 strongly inhibited both growth and proliferation and decreased cell viability; similar effects were also observed in other human PCa DU145 and LNCaP cells.

IP6 also caused a strong apoptotic death of PC-3 cells through proteins associated with the activation of cell death programming and induced apoptosis.

The inhibition of PC-3 cancer cell line by IP6 also is associated with the inhibition of the protein involved cells proliferation, differentiation, similar to that of the above study.

Interestingly, researchers also discovered that IP6 also inhibited the transcription factor activity in promoting cancer cell growth and reproduction and regeneration

Where a transcription factor (TF) is a protein that controls the rate of transcription of genetic information from DNA to messenger RNA.

Taken altogether, phytochemicals phytic acid may be considered a bioactive compound for the prevention and combined with the primary therapy for the treatment of prostate cancer.

Chinese Celery, the Prominent Post Stroke Treatment Functional Food

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a whole food for the treatment and improvement of the quality of life of post-stroke patients and without inducing any side effects, according to studies.

Stroke is a medical condition caused by reduced blood flow to the brain, leading to the death of brain cells due to lack of oxygen or bleeding.

In other words, stroke can either be results of a blocked artery (ischemic stroke) or the leaking or bursting of a blood vessel (hemorrhagic stroke).

A mini-stroke is a temporary disruption of blood flow to the brain that only causes some disruption to the brain with inducing permanent damage.

Depending on the parts of the neuron being damage, patients may experience different symptoms. However, most common symptoms of stroke include paralysis or numbness of the face, arm or leg, problems in vision, speaking, walking and persistent headache.

Certain medical conditions such as diabetes. heart diseases, long-term use of tobacco, the increase in age, ethnicity are some prevalent risk factors of stroke.

Out of many risk factors, people who have hypertension, particularly untreated hypertension and follow the Western diet are at increased risk of the onset of stroke, according to epidemiological studies.

In examining the post-stroke patients, a poor diet pattern with a high in saturated and trans fat, red meat and processed foods have been found in the high percentage, compared to the traditional diet.

Dr. Mehdi Foroughi, the lead scientist in the study of poor diet in risk of stoke wrote, " adherence to the improvements in nutrition and diet can reduce the incidence of stroke. Higher antioxidant, vitamins, potassium, calcium, vegetables, fruits, whole grain intake, and adherence to the Mediterranean diet or DASH diet can lower stroke incidence".

The statement clearly suggested that a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetable and whole grain and low in red meat, saturated fat and trans fat, and processed food is the best for prevention and stroke.

Celery is a species of Apium graveolens, belonging to the family Apiaceae. The plant is cultivated all around the globe as a vegetable.

Celery can grow to 1/2 m tall with stalks (leaf on the top) arranging in a conical shape joined at a common base.

On finding a natural ingredient with no side effect for the treatment of patients with acute ischemic stroke, researchers evaluated the Dl-3-n-butylphthalide (NBP), first isolated from the seeds of celery, efficacy in animal models of stroke.

The randomized, double-blind, double-dummy trial included 573 patients within 48 hours of onset of ischemic stroke in China.

Patients were randomly assigned to receive a 14-day infusion of NBP followed by an NBP capsule, a 14-day infusion of NBP followed by aspirin, or a 14-day infusion of ozagrel followed by aspirin.

After taking into account co and confounder, among the 535 subjects included in the efficacy analysis, 90-day treatment with NBP demonstrated a significant improvement than 14-day treatment with ozagrel as measured by the modified Rankin scale (mRS).

Where Ozagrel (INN) is an antiplatelet agent working as a thromboxane A2 synthesis inhibitor.

According to Barthel index at day 90, there is no significant difference among the three groups. The rate of adverse events was similar among the three groups.

Furthermore, on a stroke induced by the middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and normotensive Wistar Kyoto rats (WKY), researchers compared the results of the pre-treatment of NBP administered to SHR and WKY daily for two months prior to MCAO and post-treatment of NBP given daily for seven consecutive days after MCAO.

In SHR, NBP pre- and post-treatment significantly lowered neurological deficit scores, reduced infarct volume, and minimized pathological changes in the penumbra area compared to oil-vehicle treated controls.

In other words, NBP pre- and post-treatment reduced the potential damage penumbra area through its neuroprotective activity.

However, in WKY, these beneficial effects were observed only in the post-treatment group, compared to SHR.

Dr. Zhang L, at the end of the experiment, wrote, "NBP could exert both preventive and therapeutic effects on ischemic stroke in SHR, but only exerted a therapeutic effect in WKY".

Taken altogether, Chinese celery processed high amounts of Dl-3-n-butylphthalide (NBP) may be considered a functional food for the post-treatment of patients with stroke.

Ginger, Relieves Pain and Reduced Disability of Patients with Osteoarthritis

By Kyle J. Norton

Ginger may have a potential and positive effect in ameliorating the symptoms of pain and complication of reduced quality of life in patients with osteoarthritis, some scientists suggested.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic condition of a type of joint disease characterized by the breaking down of joint cartilage and underlying bone due to “wear and tear” of joints over time.

Some researchers suggested that OA is a degenerative disease characterized by “low-grade inflammation” in cartilage and synovium, affecting the joint structure and progressive deterioration of cartilage.

According to the statistic from the NIH, osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint disorder in the US. Among adults, 60 years of age or older the prevalence of symptomatic knee and sadly OA affects approximately 10% in men and 13% in women.

Epidemiological strongly suggested that obese and overweight which have a strong impact on the weight-bearing joints, genetic preposition of a patient can make such patient more susceptible to the disease compared to others do not, people with a joint injury that did heal properly in the younger age and people with occupations that require standing for long periods of time, repetitive bending, heavy lifting or other movements and the increase in age are associated to the increased risk of the onset of the disease.

The most common symptoms of osteoarthritis are joint pain and stiffness.

Dr. Giuseppe Musumeci, the lead author in the study "Osteoarthritis in the XXIst Century: Risk Factors and Behaviours that Influence Disease Onset and Progression" suggested that besides the risk factors mentioned above, dietary factors also play an important role for the onset of the disease.

In the dietary aspect in the induction of OA, the research team wrote, "This diet (The Western diet) is mainly constituted by preservative and harmful substances, such as animal fat and glucose excessive concentration and lack of nutritional factors, such as vitamins and nutrient minerals essential for our body. Moreover, the bad dietary habits may predispose people to obesity, which is responsible for both metabolic destroying processes affecting the cartilage and overload of the joints, especially hips and knees".

And, " quantity and quality of nutrient intake. Low intake of vitamin D and vitamin C is a possible risk factor for knee OA, while certain food groups, such as milk and dairy products, meat and poultry are beneficial for knee OA. Thus we could affirm that nutritional imbalance, combined with endocrine abnormalities, may be involved in the pathogenesis of OA".

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

With an aim to reaffirm the traditional use of ginger for the treatment of osteoarthritis, a joint review led by the Copenhagen University Hospital, Bispebjerg and Frederiksberg was conducted to assess the clinical efficacy and safety of oral ginger for the symptomatic treatment of osteoarthritis (OA).

The study was carried out by searching the randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing oral ginger treatment with placebo in OA patients aged >18 years satisfied the predetermined guidelines and criteria, including the outcomes of the reduction in pain and disability.

Out of 122 retrieved references, 117 were discarded, only 5 five trials (593 patients) were selected for meta-analyses.

All 5 remained studies suggested that ginger intake scored a statistically significant pain reduction.

Furthermore, application of ginger in subjects with osteoarthritis demonstrates a statistically significant reduction in disability compared to control.

However, according to the returned questionnaires from the participants, researchers surprisingly found that patients given ginger are more than twice as likely to discontinue treatment compared to placebo.

Dr. Mozaffari-Khosravi H, the lead author, launched a joint study to determine the ginger powder effects in relieving pain and inflammation in patients with osteoarthritis.

120 participants selected for the randomized double-blind placebo-controlled 3-month clinical trial for knee osteoarthritis were randomly assigned to one of two groups: the ginger group (GG) or the placebo group (PG).

Ginger selected group was given capsules containing 500 mg of ginger powder, while the PG group was given capsules filled with 500 mg starch.

At the baseline, proinflammatory cytokine concentrations did not differ by group, observed by the participant's blood sample.

After 3 months, GG showed a significant reduction of cytokines compared to the PG.

In the final report, the research team wrote, "ginger supplementation may have promising benefits for knee osteoarthritis".

These results reconfirming the use of ginger for the treatment of osteoarthritis in traditional medicine with no side effects

Manuka Honey, the Best for the Prevention and Treatment of Acute and Chronic Inflammatory Diseases

By Kyle J. Norton

Honey may the next pharmaceutical target to identify the single ingredient medicine for the treatment of choric inflammatory disease, some scientists suggested.

Inflammation is a natural and systematic response of the immune system in the protection of the body against infection caused by the invasion of stimuli and pathogens.

After sensing the bodily injury or damage, the white blood cells of the immune first line of defense stimulates the production of a blood clot to seal the would quickly and proinflammatory cytokine to the site of infection with an aim to kill off all microorganisms which may cause harm to our body.

In this acute phase of the battle, most of the times are won by the immune system. However, overexpression of the pro-inflammatory cytokines can lead the death of nearby healthy cells and improper skin healing with the formation of scars.

In some cases, certain proteins with duo anti and proinflammatory function also can switch to pro-inflammatory cytokines depending on the severity of the infection.

Chronic inflammation is a medical condition that lasts longer than 8 weeks, caused by the inability of the immune system to kill off all the microorganisms that have successfully entered the body during the acute phase of infection.

Some researchers suggested that the evolution of the immune system is to kill off the foreign micro invaders within the time frames of 8 weeks. If not, the immune system will adapt to the change, leading to chronic low-grade inflammation, a major cause of many chronic illnesses, including diabetes.

In some instances, chronic inflammation can also be caused by the immune system that mistakenly attacks the bodily tissue.

Dr. Philip Hunter in the study "The inflammation theory of disease" pinpointed the important cause of diseases associated with chronic inflammation, "Maria Abreu's research group at the University of Miami's Miller School of Medicine in the USA found that the incidence of colon cancer was linked directly to the expression of the Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) gene".
"TLRs are crucial in alerting the immune system to microbial infection, triggering acute inflammatory responses that clear invading pathogens. However, TLR4 can also maintain chronic inflammation, for example by responding to commensal bacteria in the gut. As such bacteria are constantly replenished through food intake, and therefore cannot be permanently cleared by the immune system, this can lead to persistent chronic infection maintained by TLRs. "

Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

On finding an ingredient or whole food for the prevention and treatment of acute and chronic inflammatory diseases, scientists at the Menoufia University examine the honey effects in a rat model of colitis induced by the injection of dextran sodium sulfate (DSS).

Application of natural honey showed a strong effect in the prevention of tissue injury and inflammatory infiltration by inhibited by proteins associated with the production of proinflammatory cytokine and overexpression of reactive oxygen species.

Further examination of honey effect, researchers indicated that the honey-treated group had significantly improved macroscopic and microscopic scores and inhibited the apoptotic markers.

At the end of the experiment, researchers said, "the beneficial role of natural honey in the treatment of DSS-induced colitis via the inhibition of colonic motor dysfunction and the inflammatory-oxidative-apoptotic cascade" and "the role of honey in epithelial regeneration was clarified", after taking into account co and confounders.

Moreover, in order to understand the gastroprotective effects of manuka honey against ethanol-induced gastric ulcers in rats, researchers examined the joint studies led by King Abdulaziz University, including 4 our groups of rats randomly assigned to control, ethanol (ulcer), omeprazole, and manuka honey.

During the stud, Manuka honey treated group displayed a significantly decreased the ulcer index, completely protected the mucosa from lesions, and preserved gastric mucosal glycoprotein.

Manuka honey treated group also showed increased levels of antioxidants enzymes which were suppressed by the injection of ethanol to an induced ulcer.

Manuka honey also decreased gastric mucosal MDA, the oxidative stress marker and plasma of proinflammatory cytokines.

Dr. Almasaudi SB, the lead scientist wrote in the final report, "manuka honey likely exerted its antiulcer, effect by keeping enzymatic (GPx and SOD) and nonenzymatic (GSH and NO) antioxidants as well as inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6) in a reduced form, inhibited lipid peroxidation (MDA), and preserved mucous glycoproteins levels".

Taken altogether, Manuka honey may be considered a functional food for the prevention of inflammation and combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases with no side effects.
