Ginger, Relieves Pain and Reduced Disability of Patients with Osteoarthritis

By Kyle J. Norton

Ginger may have a potential and positive effect in ameliorating the symptoms of pain and complication of reduced quality of life in patients with osteoarthritis, some scientists suggested.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic condition of a type of joint disease characterized by the breaking down of joint cartilage and underlying bone due to “wear and tear” of joints over time.

Some researchers suggested that OA is a degenerative disease characterized by “low-grade inflammation” in cartilage and synovium, affecting the joint structure and progressive deterioration of cartilage.

According to the statistic from the NIH, osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint disorder in the US. Among adults, 60 years of age or older the prevalence of symptomatic knee and sadly OA affects approximately 10% in men and 13% in women.

Epidemiological strongly suggested that obese and overweight which have a strong impact on the weight-bearing joints, genetic preposition of a patient can make such patient more susceptible to the disease compared to others do not, people with a joint injury that did heal properly in the younger age and people with occupations that require standing for long periods of time, repetitive bending, heavy lifting or other movements and the increase in age are associated to the increased risk of the onset of the disease.

The most common symptoms of osteoarthritis are joint pain and stiffness.

Dr. Giuseppe Musumeci, the lead author in the study "Osteoarthritis in the XXIst Century: Risk Factors and Behaviours that Influence Disease Onset and Progression" suggested that besides the risk factors mentioned above, dietary factors also play an important role for the onset of the disease.

In the dietary aspect in the induction of OA, the research team wrote, "This diet (The Western diet) is mainly constituted by preservative and harmful substances, such as animal fat and glucose excessive concentration and lack of nutritional factors, such as vitamins and nutrient minerals essential for our body. Moreover, the bad dietary habits may predispose people to obesity, which is responsible for both metabolic destroying processes affecting the cartilage and overload of the joints, especially hips and knees".

And, " quantity and quality of nutrient intake. Low intake of vitamin D and vitamin C is a possible risk factor for knee OA, while certain food groups, such as milk and dairy products, meat and poultry are beneficial for knee OA. Thus we could affirm that nutritional imbalance, combined with endocrine abnormalities, may be involved in the pathogenesis of OA".

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

With an aim to reaffirm the traditional use of ginger for the treatment of osteoarthritis, a joint review led by the Copenhagen University Hospital, Bispebjerg and Frederiksberg was conducted to assess the clinical efficacy and safety of oral ginger for the symptomatic treatment of osteoarthritis (OA).

The study was carried out by searching the randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing oral ginger treatment with placebo in OA patients aged >18 years satisfied the predetermined guidelines and criteria, including the outcomes of the reduction in pain and disability.

Out of 122 retrieved references, 117 were discarded, only 5 five trials (593 patients) were selected for meta-analyses.

All 5 remained studies suggested that ginger intake scored a statistically significant pain reduction.

Furthermore, application of ginger in subjects with osteoarthritis demonstrates a statistically significant reduction in disability compared to control.

However, according to the returned questionnaires from the participants, researchers surprisingly found that patients given ginger are more than twice as likely to discontinue treatment compared to placebo.

Dr. Mozaffari-Khosravi H, the lead author, launched a joint study to determine the ginger powder effects in relieving pain and inflammation in patients with osteoarthritis.

120 participants selected for the randomized double-blind placebo-controlled 3-month clinical trial for knee osteoarthritis were randomly assigned to one of two groups: the ginger group (GG) or the placebo group (PG).

Ginger selected group was given capsules containing 500 mg of ginger powder, while the PG group was given capsules filled with 500 mg starch.

At the baseline, proinflammatory cytokine concentrations did not differ by group, observed by the participant's blood sample.

After 3 months, GG showed a significant reduction of cytokines compared to the PG.

In the final report, the research team wrote, "ginger supplementation may have promising benefits for knee osteoarthritis".

These results reconfirming the use of ginger for the treatment of osteoarthritis in traditional medicine with no side effects

Manuka Honey, the Best for the Prevention and Treatment of Acute and Chronic Inflammatory Diseases

By Kyle J. Norton

Honey may the next pharmaceutical target to identify the single ingredient medicine for the treatment of choric inflammatory disease, some scientists suggested.

Inflammation is a natural and systematic response of the immune system in the protection of the body against infection caused by the invasion of stimuli and pathogens.

After sensing the bodily injury or damage, the white blood cells of the immune first line of defense stimulates the production of a blood clot to seal the would quickly and proinflammatory cytokine to the site of infection with an aim to kill off all microorganisms which may cause harm to our body.

In this acute phase of the battle, most of the times are won by the immune system. However, overexpression of the pro-inflammatory cytokines can lead the death of nearby healthy cells and improper skin healing with the formation of scars.

In some cases, certain proteins with duo anti and proinflammatory function also can switch to pro-inflammatory cytokines depending on the severity of the infection.

Chronic inflammation is a medical condition that lasts longer than 8 weeks, caused by the inability of the immune system to kill off all the microorganisms that have successfully entered the body during the acute phase of infection.

Some researchers suggested that the evolution of the immune system is to kill off the foreign micro invaders within the time frames of 8 weeks. If not, the immune system will adapt to the change, leading to chronic low-grade inflammation, a major cause of many chronic illnesses, including diabetes.

In some instances, chronic inflammation can also be caused by the immune system that mistakenly attacks the bodily tissue.

Dr. Philip Hunter in the study "The inflammation theory of disease" pinpointed the important cause of diseases associated with chronic inflammation, "Maria Abreu's research group at the University of Miami's Miller School of Medicine in the USA found that the incidence of colon cancer was linked directly to the expression of the Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) gene".
"TLRs are crucial in alerting the immune system to microbial infection, triggering acute inflammatory responses that clear invading pathogens. However, TLR4 can also maintain chronic inflammation, for example by responding to commensal bacteria in the gut. As such bacteria are constantly replenished through food intake, and therefore cannot be permanently cleared by the immune system, this can lead to persistent chronic infection maintained by TLRs. "

Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

On finding an ingredient or whole food for the prevention and treatment of acute and chronic inflammatory diseases, scientists at the Menoufia University examine the honey effects in a rat model of colitis induced by the injection of dextran sodium sulfate (DSS).

Application of natural honey showed a strong effect in the prevention of tissue injury and inflammatory infiltration by inhibited by proteins associated with the production of proinflammatory cytokine and overexpression of reactive oxygen species.

Further examination of honey effect, researchers indicated that the honey-treated group had significantly improved macroscopic and microscopic scores and inhibited the apoptotic markers.

At the end of the experiment, researchers said, "the beneficial role of natural honey in the treatment of DSS-induced colitis via the inhibition of colonic motor dysfunction and the inflammatory-oxidative-apoptotic cascade" and "the role of honey in epithelial regeneration was clarified", after taking into account co and confounders.

Moreover, in order to understand the gastroprotective effects of manuka honey against ethanol-induced gastric ulcers in rats, researchers examined the joint studies led by King Abdulaziz University, including 4 our groups of rats randomly assigned to control, ethanol (ulcer), omeprazole, and manuka honey.

During the stud, Manuka honey treated group displayed a significantly decreased the ulcer index, completely protected the mucosa from lesions, and preserved gastric mucosal glycoprotein.

Manuka honey treated group also showed increased levels of antioxidants enzymes which were suppressed by the injection of ethanol to an induced ulcer.

Manuka honey also decreased gastric mucosal MDA, the oxidative stress marker and plasma of proinflammatory cytokines.

Dr. Almasaudi SB, the lead scientist wrote in the final report, "manuka honey likely exerted its antiulcer, effect by keeping enzymatic (GPx and SOD) and nonenzymatic (GSH and NO) antioxidants as well as inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6) in a reduced form, inhibited lipid peroxidation (MDA), and preserved mucous glycoproteins levels".

Taken altogether, Manuka honey may be considered a functional food for the prevention of inflammation and combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases with no side effects.

Green Banana, the Best for the Prevention and Treatment of Diarrhea

By Kyle J. Norton

Banana is the common name of a genus of tropical herbaceous plants. It can grow from 3 to 9 m and belongs to the family of the lily and the orchid.

Diarrhea is a condition of frequent bowel movements with three loose or liquid each day. A prolonged period of diarrhea may result in dehydration due to fluid loss.

Infections by bacteria such as Salmonella or Escherichia coli are the most common causes of acute diarrhea. Patients with acute diarrhea usually are recovered within a week or 2 with or without medication.

However, patients with some bowel diseases such as such as irritable bowel syndrome or inflammatory bowel disease also frequently experience the chronic condition, which can not be cured unless the diseases are treated.

In some case, chronic frequent and severe diarrhea can be a sign of intestinal disease or a functional bowel disorder.

Most common symptoms diarrhea include loose, watery stools. abdominal pain and gastrointestinal discomforts. In the severe case, patients may also experience symptoms of fever and blood in the stool.

Some researchers suggested that symptoms of diarrhea accompanied by blood in the stool is also a sign of colon cancer.

Dr. Jia Cai, the lead scientist at the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, in the differentiated the incidence of colon polyps, cancer, and colitis for the chronic abdominal pain, chronic diarrhea, and constipation suggested that there are no significant difference was found in the positive rate of colon polyps, cancer and ulcerative colitis among these 2 groups divided by symptoms.

The team continued, "The incidence of colon polyps, cancer, and colitis for chronic abdominal pain, chronic diarrhea, and constipation group are 20.8%, 57.1%, 42.9% respectively. The incidence of colon polyps and cancer increases with age. Among the age groups 13-39 years old, 40-59 years and > 60 years, the incidence is 7.9%, 13.6%, 22.4% respectively".

Therefore, if you have diarrhea with symptoms of chronic abdominal pain, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of colon polyps, cancer, and ulcerative colitis.

Most cases of acute and chronic diarrhea can be treated successfully by natural whole foods and herbal remedies with no side effects.

On finding a natural source with no side effects for the treatment of diarrhea associated with enteral feedings remains a problem for clinicians, researchers evaluated the effects of flakes in controlling diarrhea in critically ill patients receiving enteral feedings.

The study includes 31 patients with diarrhea and receiving enteral feedings randomized to receive either banana flakes or medical treatment for diarrhea.

Both banana flakes and medical treatments reduced the severity of diarrhea in critically ill tube-fed patients.

Over the course of treatment, the banana flake group scored diarrhea mean of 21.64 +/- 7.81 compared to 25.41 +/- 9.76 to the medical group. Both groups achieved similar levels of nutrition support.

The banana flake group had less diarrhea clinically, with 57% of the subjects diarrhea free on their last study day as opposed to 24% of the medically treated subjects.

This occurred despite a threefold increase in the number of patients testing positive for Clostridium difficile toxin in the banana flake group.

Dr. Emery EA, the lead author said, " banana flakes can be used as a safe, cost-effective treatment for diarrhea in critically ill tube-fed patients".

Moreover, in order to understand the anti-diarrhea effect of banana, researchers evaluated the therapeutic effects of green banana or pectin in children with persistent diarrhea.

The double-blind trial, 62 boys, age 5-12 months, were randomly given a rice-based diet containing either 250 g/L of cooked green banana (n = 22) or 4 g/kg pectin (n = 19) or the rice-diet alone (control, n = 21), providing 54 kcal/dL daily for 7 days.

The results of stool analysis showed that
* Most children (60%) had no pathogens isolated from stools, 17% had rotavirus, 5% Vibrio cholerae, 4% Salmonella group B, and 11% had enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli infections.

* By day 3 posttreatment, significantly (P < 0.001) more children recovered from diarrhea receiving pectin or banana compared to control and by day 4, these proportions correspondingly increased to 82%, 78%, and 23%, respectively.

These results strongly indicated green banana and pectin significantly reduced amounts of stool, oral rehydration solution, intravenous fluid, and numbers of vomiting, and diarrheal duration.

Dr. Rabbani GH, the lead scientist wrote in the final report, "Green banana and pectin are useful in the dietary the management of persistent diarrhea in hospitalized children and may also be useful to treat children at home".

In support to the above results, the Hospital Universitario de Maracaibo strongly suggested that green plantain showed to be effective in the dietary management of persistent diarrhea, in a prospective, in-hospital controlled trial, two different treatments were administered to a sample of 80 children of both sexes, with ages ranging from 1 to 28 months.

Taken altogether, green banana may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of  diarrhea with no side effects

Strawberries, A Potential Anti Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia and Prostate Cancer Functional Food

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a tasty whole fruit for the prevention and treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate) and prostate cancer with no side effects, according to studies.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia happened mostly in the older age population group is a condition of an enlarged prostate that can cause some serious urinary symptoms, such as blocking the flow of urine out of the bladder.

In many cases, an enlarged prostate can also induce bladder, urinary tract or kidney problems and prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer is slow growth and medical condition characterized by cell growth disorderly and uncontrollably in the prostate tissue.

Most cases of prostate cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the prostate gland
At the advanced stage, the cancerous cell can travel a distance away from the prostate to infect other healthy tissue, through blood and fluid circulation.

The causes of prostate cancer are unknown. Epidemiologically, researchers do know that the increase in age, ethnicity, family history, genetic preposition of BRCA1 and/or BRCA2 and agent orange exposure are associated with an increased risk of the disease.

Some researchers suggested that a poor eating habit and lifestyle are the most common risk factors associated with the onset of benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer. Therefore, by changing to a healthy diet, the risk of benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer may be preventable.

Dr. Devrim E, in the concern of the widespread of prostate cancer and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), over last few decades said, "garlic and its preparations have been used for the treatment of prostate cancer and relief of BPH symptoms for decades. It is thought that the mechanism(s) through which garlic may show anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory effects".

These results suggested adding garlic into your diet daily can decrease the incidence of both benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer with no side effects.

Strawberry is a genius of Fragaria × ananassa belongs to the family Roseaceae. They have been grown all over the world with a suitable climate for commercial profits and for health benefits.

Starting at age 40, the levels of the by-product prolactin of testosterone of men increases, stimulating the production of the enzyme 5-alpha reductase that causes the conversion of testosterone to gihydro-testosterones DHT triggering prostate enlargement and other problems. Therefore in order to prevent the symptoms of enlarged prostate is to naturally impend the conversion of testosterone to DHT. Unfortunately, aging is not the only cause of enlarged prostate. Prostate Cancer is defined as a condition of the abnormal proliferation of cells in the prostate.

The major chemical compounds include anthocyanin and ellagitannins and p-Hydroxybenzoic acid, p-coumaric acid, ellagic acid, cyanidin-3-glucoside, pelargonidin-3-glucoside, kaempferol, quercetin, and myricetin.

With an aim to find the natural compound which processes the potency to inhibit the benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a common disease of the prostate that affects men as they age, and a risk factor for developing prostate cancer with no side effects, researchers at the Monash University looked into the anti BPH activity of lycopene found abundantly in the strawberry by searching the database of medical literature.

Out many medical studies were examined, only 8 published randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing lycopene to placebo (or other interventions) for the treatment of BPH and prostate cancer met the inclusion criteria were selected for this systematic review.

Meta-analysis of two studies indicated a decrease in PSA levels in men diagnosed with prostate cancer, who received lycopene compared to placebo.

In a human prostate epithelial cell line (P21) and two tumor cell lines (P21 tumor cell line 1 and 2) derived from the same patient, and a normal human breast epithelial cell line (B42) and a tumor line derived from it (B42 clone 16), researchers examined the cytotoxic effects of strawberry polyphenols.

By applying the polyphenol-rich extract derived from strawberry or anthocyanin or tannin-rich sub-fractions to the cell lines in doses varying from 50 to 1.5 microg/ml, researchers discovered the strawberry extract inhibited over 50% in cell survival of both the normal and the tumor lines with the doses of approximately 5 microg/ml.

The extracts were found to exert cytotoxicity to peripheral blood human lymphocytes with the doses higher levels 20 microg/ml for the similar effect of 50% reduction in cell survival.

Compound analysis assay suggested that the cytotoxicity was retained in the tannin-rich fraction was considerably more toxic to all cells (normal or tumor cell lines or lymphocytes) than the anthocyanin-rich fraction the tannin-rich fraction.

Furthermore, In LNCaP and PC-3) tumor cell lines, strawberry extract with concentrations of 50 microg/ml was required for 50% reduction in cell survival.

The finding suggested that strawberry processed high amounts of bioactive compounds may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer without inducing any side effects

Ginger, the Potent anti Metabolic Syndrome Pungent Spice, Scientists Say

By Kyle J Norton

Ginger may have a potential and profound effect in regulating the expression of metabolic syndrome, some scientists suggested.

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions associated with the onset of cardiovascular disease and diabetes, including fat around the waist, elevated blood pressure, high triglycerides, elevated blood sugar, and low HDL cholesterol.

Researchers suggested that people who have 3 of 5 above conditions are at substantial risk of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes.

There is no single cause of metabolic syndrome. some conditions epidemiologically are associated with overweight or obese, insulin resistance, inactive lifestyle and poor diet.

According to the statistic, In the US, approximately, over 23 percent of adults have metabolic syndrome, many of them do not know they have it.

In fact, metabolic syndrome can be reversed through a healthy lifestyle choice, accompanied by weight loss.

Dr. Christos Pitsavos, the cardio team at the University of Athens and Society for Biomedical Diabetes Research, wrote, "Several epidemiologic studies and some clinical trials, it has been suggested that people with the metabolic syndrome may benefit from intensive lifestyle modifications including dietary changes and adopting a physically more active lifestyle."

"During the last decades increasing scientific evidence has emerged that protective health effects can be obtained from diets that are rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains, and which include fish, nuts, and low-fat dairy products".

These results clearly stated that by changing the poor diet pattern to a healthy one accompanied with moderate exercise, metabolic syndrome can be reserved.

Furthermore, a healthy lifestyle in patients with metabolic syndrome also greatly improved the reduction of body weight.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient or whole food for the treatment of metabolic syndrome, researchers assess the effects of ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) on type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and/or components of the metabolic syndrome (MetS) by searching the database of medical literature.

10 studies met the inclusion criteria with a total of 490 individuals were included in the review.

Ginger showed a significant beneficial effect in glucose control and insulin sensitivity.

Ginger significantly reduced fasting blood glucose in T2DM patients (-21.24; 95% CI: -33.21, -9.26; P < 0.001) and three-month average plasma glucose concentration.

Futhermore, ginger also displayed significant effects of improvement of lipid profile.

Dr. Zhu J, the lead scientist said, at the final report "Based on the negligible side effects and obvious ameliorative effects on glucose control, insulin sensitivity, and lipid profile, ginger may be a promising adjuvant therapy for T2DM and MetS".

Moreover, in order to gain more evidence of ginger anti-metabolic syndrome effect, a study to determine the individual and concomitant effect of 6-weeks water-based exercise and oral ginger supplement on markers that have related to metabolic syndrome and systemic inflammation in obese women with breast neoplasms was conducted the University of Mazandaran.

40 women diagnosed with breast neoplasms were randomly assigned into four groups; placebo, exercise training, ginger supplement, and exercise training+ ginger supplement groups.

Participants in the ginger supplement group and the exercise training+ ginger supplement group have orally received 4 capsules, 7 days a week and for 6 weeks.

During the experiment, the ginger supplementation and the water-based exercise have resulted in a reduction of hs-CRP, IL-10 (inflammation), insulin, glucose, insulin resistance, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), triglyceride (TG); but an increase in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and ratio HDL/LDL.

These results strongly suggested that ginger supplement plus exercise demonstrates a significant effect in reducing the fasting glucose, insulin resistance, inflammation, and lipid profile and balanced the ratio of high and low-density lipoproteins.

In other words, the water-based exercise and ginger supplement group significantly showed a larger positive effect on all outcomes, compared to the water-based exercise or ginger supplement alone groups.

The findings suggested that obese breast neoplasms survivors metabolic syndrome and elevated inflammation were totally inhibited by the application of ginger supplement plus exercise training.

Taken altogether, ginger, the pungent spice can be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of metabolic syndrome accompanied by moderate exercise without inducing any adverse effects.

Honey, The Best to Inhibits Chemo-toxicity and Improves Chemotherapy For Treatment of Cancers

By Kyle J. Norton

Honey may be considered an adjunct therapy combined with the chemo drug in the improvement of the drug efficacy and reduction of chemo toxicity for the treatment of cancers, some scientists found.

Cancer is a class of chronic diseases characterized by cell growth irregularly and disorderly in the tissue of specific organs, depending on the type of cancer.

Most cases of cancer are the result of the alternation of DNA in the cell located on the surface of the inner lining of an organ. Most patients may not experience any symptoms at the early stage.

However, as cancer progresses, the continued growth tumor may cause pressure on the nearby healthy organs and nerve cells, leading localized symptoms and severe pain.

At the 4th stage of cancer, malignant cells may metastasize to other organs a distance away from the original site.

According to the statistic from the National Cancer Institute, approximately, 38.4% of men and women will be diagnosed with cancer at some point during their lifetimes.

In 2017, over 15,000 children and adolescents ages 0 to 19 were diagnosed with cancer and 1,790 died of the disease.
Chemo drugs are medicine used for the treatment of cancer by killing cancer cells that have been spread to other tissue or organ.

Chemotoxicity is the side effects of chemo drugs.

Most common symptoms of chemo drugs include the effect of blood-forming cells in the bone marrow, on hair follicles and cells in the mouth, digestive tract, and reproductive system, probably due to the medicine designed to kill cells indiscriminately.

According to the information of the pharmaceutical company, doxorubicin (Adriamycin) is one of the most powerful chemotherapy drugs ever invented by mankind.

The chemo drug used to treat a wide variety of cancers can kill cancer at every point in their life cycle.
Unfortunately, the drug can also damage heart cells and cause serious side effects, such as hair loss, breathlessness, feeling sick and easily infected.
Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid It is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

On finding a natural ingredient or whole food which processes chemopreventive properties and anti chemo toxicity during cancer treatment, researchers evaluate the effect of Kelulut honey (KH), produced by the stingless bees from Trigona species against colon cancer induced in the animal model.

A total of 24 male Sprague Dawley rats aged 5 weeks are included in the study.
Rats were divided into 4 groups: (G1) untreated group not induced with AOM, (G2) untreated group induced with AOM, (G3) treated group induced with AOM, and (G4) treated group not induced with AOM.
Injection of AOM (15 mg/kg) was via intraperitoneal route once a week for two subsequent weeks to induce colorectal cancer.
The treatment groups were given oral administration of KH (1183 mg/kg body weight) twice daily for 8 weeks.

AOM injected group showed a significant increase in the total number of aberrant crypt foci (ACF) and aberrant crypts (AC) and crypt multiplicity and damage of liver and kidney

After treatment of KH, AOM group displayed a reduction of crypts and chemotoxicity by restoring the liver and kidney function observed by blood profile.

Furthermore, KH was not toxic identified by the KH treated group not induced with AOM.

These results suggested that KH may have a potential effect on inhibiting the toxicity caused by chemotherapy and improving the chemo drugs activity without inducing any side effects.

Moreover, on finding a natural whole food to overcome 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) therapeutic resistance and adverse toxicity in colorectal cancer, researchers looked into Manuka honey (MH), a rich source of bioactive compounds to examine its anticancer effects on human colon cancer HCT-116 and LoVo cells.

Compared to 5-FU alone, MH synergistically enhanced the chemotherapeutic effects of 5-FU, by reducing cell proliferation through the suppression of enzymes and proteins associated with the function in stimulating cancer cell multicity and activation of pathways associated to cell death programming.

Combined with chemo drug 5-FU, MH promoted the expression of antibody production and production of ROS in the induction of cytotoxicity activity against cancer cells without causing to harm to the nearby cells and tissue.

This result was observed by the reducing antioxidants produced by the cancer cells and increasing oxidative stress in the tumor.

Additionally, MH also induced cancer cell apoptosis through cell cycle arrest.

The findings clearly indicated MH could be a useful preventive or adjuvant agent in the treatment of colorectal cancer with 5-FU by inhibiting the toxicity and cancer cells resistance.

Taken altogether, KH and MH can be considered functional foods for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of cancer without inducing chemotoxicity.

Ginger, The Best Remedy for the Prevention and Treatment of Dysmenorrhea

By Kyle J. Norton

Ginger may be the next generation of natural whole food for the prevention and treatment of menstrual pain, some scientists found.

Dysmenorrhea is a menstrual pain is pain occurred around a few days before menstruation begins

The symptom normally lasts less than three days.

There are  2 types of dysmenorrhea
* Primary dysmenorrhea is the painful period with no other condition occurred most in the adolescence, affecting over 90% of women in the prime time of their reproductive years. In adolescence, some researchers suggested the symptoms are associated with the immature reproductive organs.

* Secondary dysmenorrhea is the painful period associated with the disorder in the woman's reproductive organs, such as endometriosis, adenomyosis, uterine fibroids, or infection.

Some women affected by the painful period may experience symptoms of It occurs in your lower abdominal pain can be felt in the hips, lower back, or thighs.

Other common symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, lightheadedness, headache, or fatigue.

There is no cure for dysmenorrhea. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs),  the most common treatment for both primary and secondary dysmenorrhea may be effective, however, the drugs can induce some serious side effects, including liver or kidney problems. and hypertension.

If you are currently using conventional medicine for the treatment of dysmenorrhea, please sure you know all the side effects for the preventive measure.
.
In the use of diet therapy for the prevention and treatment of dysmenorrhea, Dr. Dina Abadi Bavil, the lead scientist said, "Given the scores obtained on the lifestyle questionnaire, significant differences were observed between the groups with and without dysmenorrhea in terms of eating behavior (p=0.008), physical activity (p=0.011), stress (p=0.041), and social relationships".

These results clearly suggested that a healthy diet and lifestyle play important roles in the prevention
and treatment of dysmenorrhea

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

On findings of a natural ingredient or whole food for the prevention and treatment of dysmenorrhea in the replacement of conventional medicine without inducing side effects, researchers examine the effects of ginger on primary dysmenorrhea, through searching the database of medical literature online.

Six selected studies were reviewed by 2 authors independently.

Ginger appeared more effective for reducing pain severity than placebo.

Ginger was found as effective as those of mefenamic acid (an NSAID).

The finding point to one conclusion, oral ginger could be an effective treatment for menstrual pain in dysmenorrhea.

Dr. Daily JW, the lead scientists in another search to find the evidence of ginger for treating primary dysmenorrhea launched an investigation by looking into the database of 12 medical libraries.

Seven met specific selection criteria were included in the review.

Four of the RCTs compared the therapeutic efficacy of ginger with a placebo during the first 3-4 days of the menstrual cycle and were included in the meta-analysis.
The results of the in-depth differentiation showed that ginger processes a significant effect in reducing Pain Visual Analogue Scale (PVAS) in subjects having primary dysmenorrhea.

Six RCTs out of 7 exhibited low to moderate of the risk of bias.

These results of the RCTs strongly indicated the suggestive evidence for the effectiveness of 750-2000 mg ginger powder during the first 3-4 days of the menstrual cycle for primary dysmenorrhea.

Taken altogether, ginger may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of painful period with no side effects.
