Emodin at 500 ppm was proved to be the most active compound to arrest the mitosis after 24 h second to the alizarin.

* On day 8, the leukocyte adherence in postcapillary venule and the level of TNF-alpha were still increased and the level of IL-10 was reduced in the ulcer group without treatment.

Dr. Eamlamnam K, the lead scientist at the final days of the study, wrote, "histopathological examination of the stomach on days 1 and 8 after induction of gastric ulcer showed that gastric tissue was damaged with inflammation. In the ulcer groups treated with sucralfate and Aloe vera on days 1 and 8, gastric inflammation was reduced, epithelial cell proliferation was enhanced and gastric glands became elongated".

Ginger, the Kitchen Spice Which Suppresses the Onset and Progression of Rheumatoid Arthritis

Ginger may have a potential effect in the prevention and treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, some scientists suggested.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a type of arthritis and chronic low-grade inflammatory disease associated with immune system mistakenly attacks the joint tissue.

According to the statistic, in the US over 1.3 million Americans were affected by rheumatoid arthritis compared to 1% of the worldwide population.

As of today, researchers do not know what trigger the immune system makes antibodies that attack the joint tissue. Why people with the same health condition in the same family, some are susceptible to the onset of the condition while others do not.

However, they do know the increase in age, family history, gender, environment, smoking, and obesity are some prevalent risk factors of RA.

In fact, lifestyle is some preventable risk factors which have been found to elevate the risk RA in the Western world.

Dr.Kathleen Chang, the lead scientist, in the study "Smoking and Rheumatoid Arthritis" clearly suggested that by following a healthy lifestyle, RA may be preventable.

On seeking alternative therapy for patients with chronic, painful diseases, a research team at the Basic Clin Pharmacol Toxicol investigated the potential of hydroalcoholic extract of Zingiber officinale rhizomes (Z. officinale extract) in ameliorating inflammatory process in rat rheumatoid arthritis.

Application of Z. officinale extract at the doses higher than 50 mg/kg/day intraperitoneally showed a significant effect in boosting the immune activity in rat with rheumatoid arthritis.

Continued administration for 26 days Z. officinale extract can ameliorate the clinical scores, disease incidence, joint temperature and swelling, and cartilage destruction.

The results were attributed to the extract effect in inhibiting the production of proinflammatory cytokines which play a critic role in facilitating the onset of low-grade inflammation.

The extract also reduced the immune system in the production of an antibody against the joint tissue.

Moreover, Z. officinale extract at the dose of 200 mg/kg/day was superior compared to those of 2 mg/kg/day injection of indomethacin in most of the measured parameters.

Dr. Fouda AM, at the final report, said, "These observations might make Z. officinale extract a good alternative to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for patients with rheumatoid arthritis".

In arthritis induced by a single intradermal injection of 0.1 mL of Complete Freund's adjuvant (containing heat-killed Mycobacterium tuberculosis) into the palmar surface of the left hind paw conducted by the King Faisal University, Al-Hufof, researchers examine the anti-rheumatoid arthritis in rats randomly assigned to receive orally and daily (for 28 consecutive days) distilled water as vehicle, indomethacin (1.0 mg/kg body weight), or GTaq (200 or 400 mg/kg body weight, ginger-turmeric rhizomes mixture ) from the day of arthritis induction.

Application of GTaq (especially the high dose) was more effective (4.2-38.4% higher, P < 0.05-0.001) than those of indomethacin (a non-steroidal/anti-inflammatory drug) in alleviating the loss in body weight gain, the histopathological changes in ankle joints, blood leukocytosis and thrombocytosis, iron deficiency anemia, serum hypoalbuminemia and globulinemia.

Rats treated the Gtaq also showed a reduction of the impairment of kidney functions and the risks for cardiovascular disease.

Further analysis suggested that the protective effects of GTaq are attributed to the increasing the food intake and decreasing the systemic inflammation and antioxidant activity in the inhibition of oxidative stress.

The finding supported the use of ginger-turmeric rhizomes mixture for the treatment against RA severity and complications.

Herbal Cayenne, the Kitchen Spice May Have Potential for Prevention and Treatment of Breast Cancer

Scientists may have found a kitchen spice which processes a potential for reducing risk and treatment of breast cancer, some studies suggested.

Breast cancer has emerged recently as a most common cancer that affects one in eight women during their lifetime in the US. The malignantly mammary cancer is characterized by the cell growth disorderly and uncontrollably first in the surface of the breast inner linings either milk ducts (Ductal carcinoma) or the lobules (Lobular carcinoma).

However, there are rare cases that breast cancer starts in other areas of the breast.

In 2010, over 250,000 new cases of breast cancer were expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S.

Breast cancer diagnosed in the early was found to have 100% of the 5 years survival rate compared to stage II breast cancer of 93% and stage III breast cancers of 72%.

The exact causes of cells DNA in the breast tissue alternation are unknown. However, scientists do know that certain risk factors such as aging, family history, smoking, and dense breast tissue are associated with an increased risk of breast cancer.

Genetic mutation inherited from parents such as BRCA1 and BRCA2, tumor protein 53 or P53 and Ataxia telangiectasia mutated (ATM) accounts for 5-10 percent of all breast cancer diagnosed every year.

However, inherited mutations that cause breast cancer are rare in the general population.

An unhealthy diet such as the Western diet with high in saturated and trans fat, red meat and processed food and less in fruits and vegetables is also associated with the increased risk of breast cancer.

Dr. Stoll BA, in the assessment of the Western diet, early puberty, and breast cancer risk, explained,
"Both earlier menarche and adult tallness are markers of increased risk to breast cancer. Earlier menarche in the West is usually associated with earlier onset of hyperinsulinemia, and multiple case-control studies report that hyperinsulinemia too is a marker of increased breast cancer risk. Although the Western diet is linked both to earlier menarche and also to earlier hyperinsulinemia, the mechanism involved is not necessarily the same".

In lifestyle aspects, Dr.Harvie M, the lead author at the University Hospital of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust, said, "Recent expert reports estimate that successful lifestyle changes could prevent 25% to 30% of cases of breast cancer".

Cayenne is also known as Cayenne Pepper, a red, hot chili pepper, belonging to Capsicum annuum, the family Solanaceae, native to sub-tropical and tropical regions.

The herbal medicine has been used in traditional medicine to increases metabolism, enhance circulatory system and stomach and the intestinal tract, adjust blood pressure, lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, treat frostbite, muscles, arthritis, rheumatism, low back pain, strains, sprains, bruises, and neuralgia, etc.

In the study to reaffirm the effect of capsaicin as an anti-breast cancer agent, Dr. Dou D at the Wayne State University School of Medicine and Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Center, conducted an experiment to test whether capsaicin exhibits the growth arrest and apoptosis in human breast cancer cell lines.

Although there are conflicting reports with regard to the value of hot peppers and their primary active component compound, capsaicin, as an anticancer agent, however, in vitro, breast cell growth inhibition and cell death induction was positively correlated with the capsaicin content of the peppers.

In other words, the effect of capsaicin on breast cancer proliferation and expansion are totally depending on the concentration which facilitates the production of antioxidants in the inhibition of free radical expression.

In MCF-7 cells, capsaicin was found to inhibits the cancer cell growth and induces the cancer cells on the dose-dependent manner and through reducing the levels of reactive oxygen species.

The further analysis also found that treatment of capsaicin also increased the apoptosis-inducing factor translocated into the cytosol and nucleus from the mitochondria and probably involving the pathways of caspase-independent that program breast cancer cell death

Dr. Constantinou C explained, " These pathways (pathways of caspase-independent programmed cell death (CI-PCD))are likely to be acting as 'death backup systems' that ensure effective removal of defective cells from the organism. Similar to classical apoptosis i.e. caspase-dependent programmed cell death (CD-PCD)".

Taken altogether, herbal Cayenne with high amounts of bioactive capsaicin may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer and recurrence breast cancer.

Women with a higher risk of breast cancer may want to add a small portion of chili pepper into their diet for preventive measure.

However, due to the limitation of the above studies, additional data collection large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food or its bioactive compound emodin during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of herbal Cayenne, anti-breast cancer possibilities.

Herbal Anise, the Anti Breast cancer Functional Herb, Scientists Suggest

The ability to cure breast cancer with a natural plant without inducing adverse effects are the dream that many scientists would hope to see in their lifetime. However, as of today, the hope is still a long way from reality.

Some studies suggested that herbal Anise may process a significant effect in the reduction of risk and treatment of breast cancer with no side effects.

Breast cancer is a medical and chronic condition characterized by abnormal cell growth in the breast tissues. Mose cases breast cancer begin with the alternation of DNA in the cells in the inner lining of the breast. After colonizing the entire breast the adance stage, malignant cancers can travel a distance away to infect other healthy cells and tissue.

The exact causes of breast cancer are unknown. researchers have tried hard but still could not answer the question, why people with the same healthy condition and genetic similarity in the same family, some are susceptible to the onset of the disease, while other female siblings do not.

Some researchers suggested the risk factors associated with breast cancer should be divided into preventable and unpreventable.

The preventable risk factors are condition can be changed through diet and lifestyle and choice, such as physical inactivity, obesity or overweight, poor diet, chest radiation, excessive alcohol drinking and use of hormone therapy.

Unpreventable risk factors are conditions that cannot be changed including the genetic opposition, age, dense breast tissue, early menstruation, and late menopause, race, and gender.

However, regardless of preventable and unpreventable risk factors associated with the onset of the disease, the risk of breast cancer is lower in women who follow a long-term healthy diet and lifestyle.

According to the National Breast cancer foundation, in all women with breast cancer, 60-70% of them have no connection to these risk factors at all, and some women with these risk factors will never develop cancer.

In 2010, over 250,000 new cases of breast cancer were expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S. alone and the risk of getting invasive breast cancer during the lifetime of a woman is 1/8.

Dr. Ji Hyun Kim, the lead author in the study led by the National Cancer Center, "Dietary Factors and Female Breast Cancer Risk: A Prospective Cohort Study", said, "grilled meat and high-cholesterol food intake and irregular eating habits may be associated with a higher risk of breast cancer".

These results indicated women who follow the Western diet with high in saturated and trans fat, red meats, processed foods are associated with substantially increased risk of breast cancer compared to women, following the traditional diet pattern.

Anise is a flowering plant of the species of Pimpinella anisum, genus Pimpinella, belonging to the family Apiaceae native to Egypt and the Mediterranean region.

The popular herb has been used in traditional herbal medicine as a fragrance in soaps, oils, and mouth fresheners and stomachic, antiseptic, anti-spasmodic, carminative, digestive, expectorant, stimulant, and tonic agent to treat head-lice and mites, increase blood pressure, prevent formation of gas in the gastrointestinal tract and menstrual cramps, etc.

Breast cancer (malignant breast neoplasm) is cancer that starts in the tissues of the breast either from the inner lining of milk ducts (Ductal carcinoma) or the lobules (Lobular carcinoma) that supply the ducts with milk. there are also rare cases that breast cancer starts in other areas of the breast.

On epoxypseudoisoeugenol-2-methyl butyrate (EPB), a phenylpropanoid isolated from the herbal Anise exerts a significant effect in the inhibition of cell growth, cell cycle progression and apoptosis in MCF-7 (estrogen-dependent) and BT-549 (estrogen-independent) breast cancer cells, through de-activating the NF-kappaB which plays an important role in the control of transcription of DNA, cytokine production and cell survival.

EPB also found to block the proliferation of both MCF-7 and BT-549 cells in a concentration- and time-dependent manner.

The further analysis suggested that EPB induced apoptosis by cell cycle arrest in G(1)/G(0) phase in both MCF-7 and BT 549 cells.

Dr.Ma G, the lead scientist at the final report said, " in vitro results indicated that EPB has a potential for use against both hormone-dependent and hormone-independent breast cancers and its effects seem to be mediated by inhibiting the NF-kappaB activity".

In an attempt to find food components potentially acting as selective estrogen receptor modulators SERMs for treatment of breast cancer with no side effects, the University of Athens submitted four plant aqueous extracts derived from Greek flora (Sideritis Euboea, Sideritis clandestina, Matricaria chamomilla, and Pimpinella anisum) in a series of in vitro biological assays to examine their SERM profile.

All plant extracts including Anise at a concentration range 10-100 microg/mL demonstrated a potency as of SERMs in stimulating osteoblastic cell differentiation and antiestrogenic effect on breast cancer cells without proliferative effects on cervical adenocarcinoma cells.

Additionally, the antiestrogenic effect of the plant extracts was reduced under the presence of estradiol on MCF-7 cells, that suggests the extracts may process a potential estrogen receptor-related mechanism.

Taken altogether, herbal Anise may be considered a functional food for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with conventional medicine for treatment of breast cancer, pending on the further confirmation of large sample size and multi-center studies.
