Carrots, the Veggie Which Normalizes Levels of Blood Glucose in Patient with Hyperglycemia

Kyle J. Norton

Carrots may have a profound and positive effect in normalizing the levels of sugar in the blood, some scientists suggested.

Hyperglycemia is a condition characterized abnormal high levels of plasma glucose circulated in the blood.

The syndrome does not cause any symptom until the levels of sugar are elevated above 180 to 200 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL), or 10 to 11 millimoles per liter (mmol/L).

Hyperglycemia is considered an early culprit for the onset of type 2 diabetes. Untreated managed type 1 and 2 diabetes that causes prolonged periods of high blood glucose may induce some unpredictable complications, such as nerve, kidney, foot, and eye damage.

If you are diabetic and have fasting and after meal fasting glucose of higher than 130 mg/dL and over 140 mg/dL respectively, you are considered to have the onset of hyperglycemia.

The causes of hyperglycemia are associated with numbers of the factor. However, researchers as of today, do not know why people with the same health condition and family history, some are susceptible to the risk of the condition, while others do not.

Some researchers suggested that people who have diabetes skipping or forgetting your insulin or oral glucose-lowering medicine,  eat far more carbohydrates compared to the normal intake of insulin and don't take part in daily exercise are most dangerous to have hyperglycemia.

In compared to hyperglycemia, prediabetes is a condition in which blood sugar levels that are higher than normal but lower than of diabetics.

If you are diabetes, and experiencing symptoms of fruity-smelling breath, persistent gastrointestinal discomforts,  shortness of breath and dry mouth, you have hyperglycemia. Please make sure you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

In serious cases, some diabetes with hyperglycemia also experience symptoms of confusion, stomach pain, and coma.

Carrot, a root vegetable with an orange color is a subspecies of Daucus carota, belonging to the family Apiaceae, native to Asian and Europe.

In the study to investigate the relationship between hyperglycemia and both serum carotenoids and intake of vegetables and fruits in a total of 284 subjects, 133 with a history of diabetes mellitus or 151 with hyperglycemia diagnosed using a 5.6% cutoff value for hemoglobin A1c (High HbA1c group, n = 151) from among inhabitants of a rural area in Hokkaido, Japan, match with healthy control researchers found that

* The odds ratio (OR) for high HbA1c was 0.49 (95% confidence interval: 0.29-0.85) on high intake frequency of carrot and pumpkin.

* There are no significant relationships between high HbA1c and intake frequencies of other vegetables and fruits.

These results suggested that carrot and pumpkin have a positive effect in reducing the levels of blood glucose in patients with high HbA1c, compared to the intake of other fruits and vegetables.

Furthermore, in the evaluation of serum carotenoid levels among residents with hyperglycemia who were screened in a health check-up program for the inhabitants living in a rural area of Hokkaido compared with those with normal levels, researchers showed that
* Serum levels of alpha, beta-carotenes, and cryptoxanthin were lower among those with high HbA1c newly detected than among those with a normal level.

* Observation on diabetics who have already been under control in the clinic, showed no significant differences of serum levels of carotenoids, or lipids such as total cholesterol and TBARS compared to other groups

The information indicated that serum carotenoid levels can be used as an indicator of food intake and oxidative stress for the prediabetic condition since newly detected hyperglycemia tends to show lower serum antioxidant levels such as beta-carotene, and higher serum lipid peroxide levels.

Interestingly, researchers after taking other factors into account said, " males who currently smoked and drank alcohol, the intake frequency of carrot or pumpkin was significantly lower for those with high HbA1c than for the others".

Taken all together, people who have diabetes and are at higher risk may want to add a portion of carrot into their daily diet for preventive measure.

Since the studies quoted in this articles are observational bases, therefore, further data collection on large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of carrot's anti-hyperglycemic possibilities.

Green Tea, the Beverage May Speeds Up the Healing of Chronic Back Pain

By Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in ameliorated symptoms and treatment of chronic back pain, some scientists suggested.

Chronic back pain is a condition of musculoskeletal disorders(MSDs) of the spine that lasts more than 3 months, caused by various factors, including bone fractures, muscle or ligament injury, arthritis, herniated discs. aging,...

Certain symptoms are associated with patients with chronic back pain, including loss of bowel or bladder control if the condition is on the lower back,  numbness, tingling, or weakness in one or both legs and constant pain that gets worse at night.

According to the statistic provided by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare,

* In 2014–15, an estimated 3.7 million Australians (16%, or 1 in 6 people) had chronic back problems.

* The prevalence of the condition increases with age up to before declining slightly in aged 75 and over.

*More than three-quarters (77%) of people with chronic back problems were of working age (15–64), and

* In 2008–09, around 1.8% of total health-care expenditure in Australia ($1.2 billion) was attributed to back problems, causing a significant burden to the economy in the country.

Some researchers in the finding of mutated genes which have strong influence in the onset of chronic back pain suggested, " ...only a minority of the genetic influences was caused by genes affecting disc degeneration suggesting that genes involved in pain perception, signaling, and psychological processing (Foulkes and Wood 2008), and genetic variants of immune genes (Solovieva et al. 2004b) contribute to the proportion of heritability of chronic back pain".

These results indicated that genetic mutation inherited from the parent may have a minor effect in contributing to the early development of the condition.

Green tea is a precious drink processes numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.

Application of biologically active polyphenol epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG) demonstrated a significant effect in reduced back pain through facilitating the anti-inflammatory and anti-catabolic activity in patients with intervertebral disc (IVD) disease due to age-related changes in the adult disc in the induction of back pain.

According to the study by the Institute for Biomechanics (D-HEST), ETH Zurich ingestion of green tea EGCG on back pain patients, human IVD cells isolated from patients undergoing surgery due to degenerative disc disease (n = 34) and cultured in 2D or 3D indicated that the phytochemical inhibited levels of inflammatory response activated by IL-1β, a cytokine protein produced by macrophages, with function in contributing the inflammatory pain hypersensitivity in the site of infection observed by the reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), western blotting, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), immunofluorescence and transcription factor assay.

Furthermore, the application also displayed a strong effect on reducing expression of
p38 mitogen-activated protein kinases in mediated inflammatory factors of IL-1β in responded to stress stimuli.

Also, according to the Institute for Biomechanics (D-HEST), in the investigation of the analgesic properties of EGCG, by the von Frey filament test in Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 60), green tea EGCG injection also significantly inhibited the expression of pro-inflammatory mediators as expressed in above and reduced matrix metalloproteinases which have been found to associate to pro-inflammatory cytokines, chemokines and other proteins to regulate varied aspects of inflammation and immunity.

Moreover, in the radiculopathy pain component, researchers also indicated that EGCG inhibited the inflammation in the precipitated back pain through modulating the activity of IRAK-1 in glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity in skeletal muscle and p38, c-Jun N-terminal kinases (JNK) and nuclear factor NF-κB in response to stress stimuli.

Some researchers indicated that back pain may also be induced by muscle degeneration and impairment nerve injury, leading to increased levels of reactive oxygen species in the induction of tissue apoptosis.

In crushing of the sciatic nerve induced back pain in a tested animal, application of green tea EGCG improved motor function in the toe spread and foot positioning and gained in the percentage motor deficit.

More importantly, EGCG expressed a significant effect in the recovery of sensory innervation in neuropathic pain-like syndrome and improved muscle tissues from injured limb with severe histopathological alterations at the end of week 3 post-surgery in treated animals.

According to the RT-PCR assay, EGCG treatment also normalized the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio, the abnormal ratio of the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio has been found to associate with the induction of nerve cell apoptosis as well as inhibiting levels of p53 with function in regulated the cell death cycle at days 3 and 7 post-surgery.

These results demonstrated an important effect of green tea EGCG in the enhanced functional recovery, by protecting muscle fibers from cellular death, and improving morphological recovery in the skeletal muscle after nerve injuries.

However, in the study of caffeine activity in the modulation of pain perception in chronic pain states of 131 patients with chronic low back pain (64 men and 67 women; mean age = 42.1 years; mean duration of pain = 6.1 years) referred to a multidisciplinary pain clinic over a 2-year period, researchers found that caffeine is not related to the global experience of pain and disability in patients with chronic low back pain, although high caffeine use may be embedded in the context of other unhealthy lifestyle behaviors.

Taken all together, green tea and its bioactive component epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG) may be considered functional foods in reduced back pain caused by physical damage of the spine and injured nerve cells.

Intake of green tea supplement should be taken with exceptional care as some cases of liver acute toxicity have been reported in medical literature.

Green Tea, the Beverage Which Inhibits Airway Inflammatory Diseases

Kyle J. Norton

Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in reduced risk airway inflammation and treatment of arthritis, some scientists suggested.

Inflammation is a physical condition characterized by reddened, swollen, hot, and often painful of one and some parts of the body, due to the immune response to injury or infection.

In other words, inflammation is a result of the immune response by the macrophages, activating the proinflammatory cytokines protein in protecting the damage and injured tissue against foreign pathogens invasion in the acute phase of infection.

Some cytokines with duo function in switching from anti-inflammatory cytokines against inflammation under normal condition to proinflammatory in the acute phase of body damage and injury.

Although the activation of proinflammatory cytokines plays an important role in healing the body injured tissue, overproduction can cause abnormal healing with scars and death of healthy cells.

For example, Overproduction of inflammatory cytokines in hepatitis infection can cause liver scars, leading to the development of liver fibroid.

According to the statistic provided by the AMERICAN GASTROENTEROLOGICAL ASSOCIATION, more than 30 million people take over-the-counter and prescription NSAIDs for pain relief, headaches, and arthritis every day, including 20 NSAIDs available by prescription only.

Anti-inflammatory pain and fever reliever drugs such as aspirin, ibuprofen, or Celebrex may be effective, however, they can induce certain side effects, including gastrointestinal discomforts, such as heartburn, .headaches,. and dizziness.

In serious cases, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can induce kidney damage, stomach ulcer, and high blood pressure.

If you are currently taking the medicine, please make you know all the side effects. Longterm use of the medicine can also increase the risk of bleeding and damage to the small intestine.

Green tea is a precious drink processed numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.

In the investigation of green tea, bioactive polyphenols epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG) in the reduced risk airway inflammation through its immune modulatory activities in several cytokines and pathways researchers at the College of Medicine found that application of EGCG exerts a significant impact in regulating the breakdown of extracellular matrix in normal physiological processes of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP-9) with function in remodeling the major change that is responsible for irreversible asthmatic airflow restriction in toluene diisocyanate (TDI)-inhalation lung tissues associated in the initiation of pulmonary diseases.

Further analysis also suggested that EGCG reduces airway inflammation through inhibiting overproduction of the levels of TNF-alpha and Th2 cytokine (IL-5) in BAL fluid during the course of the systemic inflammatory response against the invasion of bacteria and virus in acute phase reaction.

These results indicated that EGCG processes a strong impact in reduced airway constriction caused by inflammatory agents in facilitating the asthmatic reaction.

Interestingly, the efficacy of EGCG decreased airway inflammation induced by application of T DI through its antioxidant activity and stimulated the production of natural antioxidants in the body tissue by preventing the ROS in the precipitated chain reaction to induced cytotoxicity and suppressed MMP-9 in orchestrated inflammatory cell migration.

Dr. Kim SH, after taking account of other co-founders, said, "Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), a major form of tea catechin, has anti-allergic properties" and " EGCG regulates inflammatory cell migration possibly by suppressing MMP-9 production and ROS generation".

The above differentiation was supported by the study of biological activity of EGCG in anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory activities of lung tissues in an asthma model-mouse, and nasal epithelial cells of patients with allergic rhinitis conducted by the.

According to the evaluation, compared to control group, treatment group ameliorated the expression of MUC5B with physiologic functions in the mucus gel that ensure normal mucus clearance and p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) in response to stress stimuli such as inflammatory factors in the induction of cell differentiation, apoptosis and autophagy to protect the body against infectious cells to growth and site expansion.

Similarly, application of green EGCG also reduced expression of MMP-9 in enhancing inflammatory cell migration as found in the first study without alternating the extracellular signal-related kinase (ERK)1/2 MAPK expression in response to inflammatory factors.

These results suggested that EGCG demonstrated a potential effect in reducing airway inflammation through interaction with the nasal epithelial cells of patients with allergic inflammation by decreased phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA)-induced MUC5B and MMP-9 expression.

According to the experiment of murine heterotopic tracheal allograft model of OB in mice model, injection of green tea EGCG inhibited inflammation, with significantly less neutrophil and macrophage infiltration and significantly reduced fibrosis. Those factors were found to contribute to the rejection of the transplant lung organ.

Moreover, EGCG also decreased expression of inflammatory cytokines production involved systematic inflammation and protein monocyte chemokine monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) in promoting infectious cells migration and infiltration of monocytes/macrophages through increased antifibrotic cytokine interferon-γ-inducible protein-10 (IP-10) and decreased profibrotic cytokine transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) information of excess fibrous connective tissue in the organ or tissue.

The findings strongly suggested that EGCG has great potential in ameliorating the development of obliterative airway disease.

Taken all together, green tea containing bioactive polyphenols EGCG may be considered a functional food in the prevention of airway inflammation and airway-related diseases through a complex system involved may proteins and pathways.

However, the intake of green tea supplement should be taken with exceptional care, as acute liver toxicity has been reported in some medical literature.

Green tea Bioactive Compound Theanine Which Protects the Brain Against Manic and Depressive Episodes in Bipolar Disorder

Kyle J. Norton

Green tea major bioactive theanine may have a potential and positive effect in blocking the onset of bipolar disorder, some scientists suggested.

Bipolar disorder is a condition of brain disorder characterized by unusual shifting mood, energy, activity levels, and interfering the brain function in carrying out day-to-day tasks.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, the conditions can be classified in to
* Bipolar I disorder with severe manic episodes last at least 7 days, most people with bipolar I disorder needs immediate hospital care.

* Bipolar II disorder is characterized by a pattern of depressive episodes and hypomanic episodes.

* Cyclothymic disorder also known as cyclothymia is a condition with numerous periods of hypomanic and depressive symptoms that lasting for at least 2 years.

*4. Other conditions that do not match the 3 above.

Dr. Steve Bressert, Ph.D. in the article Manic Episode Symptoms, wrote, "The symptoms of mania include: elevated mood, inflated self-esteem, decreased need for sleep, racing thoughts, difficulty maintaining attention, increase in goal-directed activity, and excessive involvement in pleasurable activities" compared to depressive episode that characterizes with low mood and other depression symptoms that lasts for 2 weeks or more. In some cases, a depressive episode may last several weeks or months at a time.

Green tea is a precious drink processed numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.

In the investigation to determine whether theanine (n-ethylglutamic acid), a non-proteinaceous amino acid component of green and black teas have any protective effects on the central nervous system, researchers found that
* Theanine exerts a variety of neurophysiological and pharmacological effects through crosses the blood-brain barrier.

* Application of theanine also demonstrates the anxiolytic and calming effect by up-regulation of inhibitory neurotransmitters and possible modulation of serotonin and dopamine in selected areas and increasing levels of the brain-derived neurotrophic factor.

* The bioactive compound also displays a neuroprotective effect following cerebral infarct and injury,

* Theanine also elicits improvements in cognitive function including learning and memory,

* Interestingly, theanine administration elicits selective changes in alpha brain wave activity with concomitant increases in selective attention during the execution of mental tasks and inhibits depression.

These results suggested that theanine can be considered a therapeutic role in the treatment of some psychiatric disorders such as anxiety disorders, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and bipolar disorder.

Additionally, in a study by Portland VA Medical Center of adults with schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder or bipolar disorder who were maintained on antipsychotic and other psychotropic medications randomized to supplemental EGCG or placebo including a total of 34 participants (17 EGCG, 17 placebo) and 25 participants (14 EGCG, 11 placebo), researchers showed that
* Both treatment groups showed significant reductions in psychotic, depressive and anxiety symptoms from baseline to end of treatment.

* However, EGCG did not significantly affect psychiatric symptoms or inflammatory markers, as compared with placebo.

* Adverse effects were mild and comparable between groups.

The finding indicated that green tea extract EGCG exerts an insignificant effect on psychiatric symptoms in patients with bipolar disorder compared to Theanine, another major ingredient in green and black tea.

Taken all together, green and black tea major bioactive theanine may be considered a secondary therapy in protecting the brain against manic and depressive episode in patients with bipolar disorder.

Asparagus, The Veggie and Plant That Boosts and Restores Cellular and Humoral Immunity, Scientists Say

By Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Asparagus may have profound and potential effect in reducing the risk of infection caused by microorganisms and preventing the overactive immune system to launch an attack of the body tissue, mistakenly, some scientists suggested.

The immune system is the set of cells and their activity against antigens or infectious agents that comprise the body's defense system against diseases.

The immune system does a great job of keeping people healthy and preventing infections. Beside foods and nutritional supplements, herbs also play an important role in helping the immune system defend against viruses and bacteria attacks.

Immunomodulatory activity is an action that improves the under active immune function that is susceptible to the invasion of the foreign microorganism and inhibits the overactive immune system that causes autoimmune diseases.

In other words, the immunomodulatory activity involved antimicrobial agents is to modulate the genes involved in immune reactions, or of the neurohormonal system which regulates immune functions and any toxic or immunotoxic effects such as allergic reactions or destruction of immune effectors, that may cause harm to the body or interfere with the body normal function.

Dr. Marie-Thérèse Labro in the study "Immunomodulatory Effects of Antimicrobial Agents. Part I"
with the assessment of the battle against infections, microorganisms are still a threat to mankind. said, "we have now entered the third era of anti-infective strategy, which intends to favor the interplay between active molecules and the immune system. The first part of this review focuses on the potential immunomodulating properties of anti-infective agents, beginning with antibacterial and antiviral agents".

Truly, regardless of hundreds of antibacterial medicine were produced by mankind, the major concerns remain about the emergence of resistant and multidrug-resistant pathogens,

The doctor continued, "(Particularly), the antiviral drug armamentarium is comprised of only a few dozens of compounds which are highly pathogen-specific, and resistance is also a concern".

Therefore, improving the immune function as of today still is the best method in reducing the risk of infection and autoimmune diseases'

Asparagus is a flowering plant,  belonging to species the genus Asparagus, native to the western coasts of northern Spain, north to Ireland, Great Britain, and northwest Germany, northern Africa, and western Asia.

The plant and food have been used from early times as a vegetable and medicine, because of its delicate flavor and diuretic properties.

In the investigate whether Asparagus racemosus Linn. (Fam. Liliaceae) an ethnopharmacologically acclaimed Ayurvedic medicinal plant processes the immunomodulatory effect against pathogens, researchers at the Centre for Phytochemistry and Pharmacology, by examining the action of an aqueous extract from the plant.

Observation of the immunoreactivity after injecting with the extract into the human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) isolated from whole blood on a ficoll-hypaque density gradient, showed a dose-dependent in stimulating the immune NK cell activity with a peak increase of 16.9±4.4% at 5.6 μg/ml.

Further differentiation suggested that ARP can achieve a higher stimulatory immune activity of 51.8±1.2% at 25 μg/ml.

These results suggested that A. racemosus processed an immune modulatory effect in potentiating the NK cell activity of the immune system.
Some researchers in the concerns of the current drugs efficacies that suppress the immune function during the course of infection, conducted a study with an aim to find a natural compound with the similar efficacy but no side effects.

The combination of Asparagus racemosus, an immunomodulatory drug, in combination with cisplatin against Leishmania donovani was used in the testing against parasite infected BALB/c mice.

According to the final report, infection of A. racemosus at a dose of 650 mg/kg b.wt./day for 15 days, in combination with cisplatin at the dose of 5 mg/kg b.wt./day for 5 days, intraperitoneally exerted a significant effect in enhancing the clearance of parasites as determined by Giemsa-stained liver impression smears.

Moreover, Besides having better killing activity, the combination group achieved increased production of disease resolving Th-1 response (IFN-gamma, IL-2) that has a function in killing intracellular parasites bacteria and viruses, heightened DTH (delayed type hypersensitivity) response and augmented levels of antibody IgG2a.

The findings may suggest that A. racemosus in combination with cisplatin in L. donovani infected BALB/c mice boosted and restored both cellular and humoral immunity.

Importantly, after taking into account co and confounders, Dr. Sachdeva H, the lead author added, "Moreover, A. racemosus in combination with cisplatin not only provided enhanced protective immune response but also resulted in remarkable improved kidney and liver function tests as manifested by normal levels of SGOT, SGPT, alkaline phosphatase, creatinine and urea in blood plasma with normal histological observations as compared to only cisplatin treated L. donovani infected BALB/c mice".

Taken all together, Asparagus used alone or in combination with cisplatin in L. donovani may be considered a primary  Immunomodulatory therapy for treatment for people with immune diseases.

However, further data collection on large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of asparagus immunomodulatory possibilities.

Chaste tree berry, The Herbal Remedy Which Blocks the Onset of Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS), Scientists Show

By Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrients

The use of plants for healing purposes have been predated long before the existence of modern medicine.

Herbal plants have formed fundamental sources for conventional medicine in the discovery of single-ingredient medication, including aspirin (from willow bark), quinine (from cinchona bark), and morphine (from the opium poppy)......

Chaste tree berry, the queen of all herbs may have a potency in the prevention and treatment of premenstrual syndrome.

Premenstrual syndrome is a faulty function of the ovaries related to the women's menstrual cycle, affecting women's physical and emotional state, and sometimes interfering with daily activities as a result of hormone fluctuation. The syndrome occurs one to two weeks before menstruation and then declines when the period starts.

The exact causes of the premenstrual syndrome are unknown. researchers also do not know why? women with the same health condition, some are more prone to the onset of PMS than others.
However, researchers do know that chemical changes in the brain during the menstrual cycle and period, leading to fluctuations of serotonin, a brain chemical (neurotransmitter) may play a crucial role in mood states and the imbalance of the levels of the hormone estrogen and progesterone could trigger PMS symptoms.

Truly, some researchers also suggested that insufficient amounts of serotonin produced a few days before menstruation may contribute to premenstrual symptoms such as depression, food cravings, and sleep problems.

Moreover, in the investigation of genes inherited from the parents and the risk of premenstrual syndrome, some researcher suggested that family history, ethnicity, and certain mutated gene could cause some women to succumb to PMS whereas others are left relatively unscathed.

Conventional medicine used to relieve pain in PMS, such as Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and painkillers may be effective, but they induce certain side effects including stomach pain and heartburn, headaches and dizziness,.... and skin rash due to an allergic reaction.

In serious cases, the medicine cause stomach ulcers, liver and kidney condition,... and hypertension.  If you are taking the medicine for a long-term, please make sure that you discuss the adverse effects with your doctor.

Chaste tree berry is a species of Vitex agnus-castus, genus Vitex, belonging to the family Lamiaceae, native to the Mediterranean region, considered as Queen herb in treating menstrual problems and discomforts, The herb also has been used in herbal medicine for thousands of year as an aphrodisiac agent.

In a prospective, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel group, multi-center clinical trial in compared VAC BNO 1095 extract and placebo for up to three cycles, conducted by the Peking Union Medical College Hospital, group treated with extract of vitex agnus castus showed a significant reduced symptoms of PMS with mean total PMSD score decreased from 29.23 at baseline (0 cycle) to 6.41 at the termination (3rd cycle) with no serious of side effects.

Furthermore, the extract of vitex agnus castus (VAC, BNO 1095) oral administrated in 67 patients enrolled and randomly assigned to receive one tablet of VAC or placebo once a day, exhibited the decreased premenstrual syndrome symptoms at the 3rd cycle, including symptoms of negative affect, water retention, food cravings, and pain, in the treatment group, compared to placebo group, especially in symptoms of water retention.

The moderate-to-severe premenstrual syndrome in Chinese women study also showed a significantly greater improvement of symptoms with intake of vitex agnus castus (VAC, BNO 1095)group than placebo, including symptom of insomnia.

Additionally, according to Dr. Döll M, the extract of chaste tree berry decreased the levels of prolactin serum during the first 3 weeks of the cycle of the premenstrual period, inducing stress involved expression of symptoms of PMS.

Taking together, Chaste tree berry may be a safe herbal medicine for prevention and treatment of PMS, through decreasing the levels of prolactin, and negative factors and enhancing the function of alleviating symptoms of the syndrome.

Green Tea, The Functional Beverage Which Protects the Stomach Against Gastric Ulcer

Kyle J. Norton

Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in reducing the risk and treatment of gastric ulcer, some scientists suggested.

Gastric ulcers are sores that develop in the lining of the stomach as a result of bacterial infection or by overproduction of stomach acid. In other words, the gastric ulcer is a condition characterized open sores developed in the stomach, affecting the function of the stomach.

There are a set of factors that cause a gastric ulcer, including the infection of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), frequent use of  anti-inflammatory medicine, aging, smoking and excessive alcohol drinking

Some researchers suggested that people who have radiation therapy for stomach cancer are also a higher risk to gastric ulcer development.

According to the study "Are genetic influences on peptic ulcer dependent or independent of genetic influences for Helicobacter pylori infection?" by the Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Baylor College of Medicine. "Genetic influences are of moderate importance for liability to peptic ulcer disease. Genetic influences for peptic ulcer are independent of genetic influences important for acquiring H. pylori infection".

If you are experiencing the symptoms of dull pain in the stomach. weight loss. refuse to eat because of pain. persistent gastrointestinal discomforts,  acid reflux, and heartburn, you may have a gastric ulcer. Please make sure that you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

Green tea, a precious drink processes numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and Western world.

In the testing of healing of the hydroalcoholic extract including ethyl acetate fraction, (GEAc) and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) from green tea (GEt) in  the risk of gastric ulcer induced by application of 80 % acetic acid on serosal mucosa of rats, researchers showed that application of the extract after 7 days inhibited ulcer area  by exhibiting the antioxidant activity in reducing the  free radical overexpression.

Furthermore, application of  the hydroalcoholic extract also inhibited the oxidative stress that  cause gastric damage by injection of acetic acid by enhancing the production of antioxidant enzyme GSH, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and Glutathione-S-transferase (GST) enzymes and  ameliorating the production of lipid hydroperoxides (LOOH), a free radical in precipitated ulcer development by withdrawing electrons from the lipids in cell membranes.

Additional analysis also suggested that rats fed with green tea (GEt) improved the capacity of mucin content in gastric juice which has been found at reduced levels in rats with an ulcer after infecting of acetic acid.

Interestingly, injection of green tea (GEt) also decreased inflammatory infiltration of Myeloperoxidase (MPO) and N-acetylglucosaminidase (NAG) which has been used as biomarkers in the measurement of severity in some diseases including gastric ulcer.

Importantly, the application did not alter gastric acid secretion and induced acute toxicity.

Dr. Borato DG, the lead authors, after taking into account con-founders said, "GEt had a pronounced antiulcer effect, possibly through maintenance of mucin content and reduction of inflammation and oxidative stress".

Other polyphenol compound L-Theanine, isolated from green tea on NSAID (indomethacin)-induced maximum ulceration in the stomach on the third day at dose of 18 mg/kg inhibited the expression of the overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the induction of lipid peroxidation, oxidation and protein carbonylation which is considered one of the most harmful irreversible oxidative protein that cause damage to the stomach.

The application also reduced expression of type 1 T helper (Th1) cells in the production of inflammatory cytokines, interferon-gamma, interleukin (IL)-2, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-beta, in the facilitated immune response in exhibiting inflammation in the acute stomach damage infection.

Additionally, L-Theanine also increased the levels of total thiol in the stomach tissue, mucin content in the gastric juice. The enhanced antioxidant levels not only improve digestion but also protect the stomach against damage by foreign substances.

Moreover, at a higher dose of 40 mg/kg b.w. At 10 mg/kg b.w., Dr. Chatterjee S, the lead author said, "L-theanine significantly alleviated the adverse oxidative effect of indomethacin through enhanced synthesis of PGE2 by modulation of cyclooxygenase-1 and 2 [COX-1 and COX-2] expression, Th1/Th2 cytokine balance, and restoration of cellular antioxidant status at the gastric ulcer margin".

Taken together, been tea with abundant bioactive polyphenols may be considered functional food for treatment of gastric ulcer without causing any adverse effects.

However, high doses and long-term applications of green tea supplement were associated with acute liver toxicity.
