Respiratory Disease: 5 Most Common Complications of Bronchiectasis

By Kyle J. Norton

Respiratory disease is a medical condition, affecting the breathing organ and tissues including Inflammatory lung disease, obstructive lung diseases, restrictive lung diseases, respiratory tract infections, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli, the nerves and muscles breathing, etc,

According to a statistic provided by the Office of Diseases Prevention and Health Promotion, currently, more than 25 million people in the United States have asthma. Approximately 14.8 million adults have been diagnosed with COPD, and approximately 12 million people have not yet been diagnosed.

Complications are secondary diseases or conditions aggravating an already existing one.
Bronchiectasis
Bronchiectasis is a condition characterized by the damage of the localized, irreversible dilation of a part of the bronchial tree and the walls of the large airways of the lung as a result of the destruction of the lung muscles and elastic tissues.

Bronchiectasis can be presented alone.

The exact causes of bronchiectasis are unknown. However, researchers do know that certain risk factors including childhood infections, severe lung infection in childhood, immunodeficiency, allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA), aspiration,  cystic fibrosis, cilia abnormalities, and connective tissue diseases are associated with the increased risk of the onset of the disease.

In the article "Gene Mutations Linked to Other Lung Diseases May Contribute to Bronchiectasis, Study Suggests", Dr. Patricia Inacio wrote, "Mutations in genes linked to other lung diseases, specifically cystic fibrosis and primary ciliary dyskinesia, may also contribute to bronchiectasis, according to researchers from China".

But in most cases, it is a disease coexisted with a patient of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

If you have developed symptoms of a chronic cough, coughing up blood. abnormal weird sounds or wheezing in the chest with breathing. shortness of breath and chest pain, you may have bronchiectasis. Please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

Complications
1. Arterial stiffness (an indicator of increased CV risk), increased inflammation, reduced exercise capacity and bone thinning.

In the study to investigate of a total of 20 patients with noncystic fibrosis bronchiectasis and compare to 20 controls similar in age, gender and smoking exposure, researchers found that patients with bronchiectasis had increased arterial stiffness (an indicator of increased CV risk), increased inflammation, reduced exercise capacity and bone thinning (28).

2. T Hemoptysis
T Hemoptysis is a common complication of bronchiectasis. Patients with bronchiectasis complicated by primary hyperfibrinolysis do not respond to regular treatment for hemoptysis, which may potentially cause fatal consequences, according to the study by Department of Respiratory Diseases, Southern Medical University. (29).

3. Acute respiratory failure from bilateral broncholithiasis
There is a report of a case of acute airway obstruction secondary to bilateral broncholiths. Successful management was achieved with rigid bronchoscopy(30).

4. Endobronchial nocardiosis
There is a report of a case of endobronchial nocardiosis associated with the presence of a broncholith(31).

5. Pneumonia
There is a report of a 56-year-old woman visited our hospital in 2003 and right upper lobe pneumonia was detected with a calcified nodule that completely obstructed the right upper lobe bronchus on CT.

After admission, she spontaneously expectorated a stone. The composition of the stone was 57% calcium phosphate and 43% calcium carbonate.

Radiological findings and the composition of the stone suggested that this broncholith was calcified bronchial mucus rather than a calcified lymph node that might have perforated into the airway.

Bronchiectasis of the right B3 bronchus was observed on CT scan after lithoptysis. Although the bronchiectasis was unchanged 2 years later, she had no symptoms, such as a fever or a cough(32).

Green Tea, the Beverage May Speed Up the Healing Process of Tendinitis, Scientists Show

By Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect on the healing of tendinitis by protecting the collagen stability and fibrous connective tissue, some scientists suggested.

Tendinitis is a condition characterized by inflammation of a tendon as a result of overuse, infection or rheumatic disease.

The condition mostly happens to people who have jobs involved repetitive movements. Some

Some researchers suggested that in order to prevent tendinitis, it is better to change activities, or rest and come back to it later.

Most cases of tendinitis can be successfully treated with rest, sometimes with physical therapy.

Intake medication may also have a profound effect on reducing pain. However, they may induce common and serious side effects, depending on the types of medicine.

Please make sure that you understand all the side effects, if you are currently taking the medicine for relieving pain.

Most cases of tendinitis are recurrent if the thick fibrous cords that attach muscle to bone are continuously overuse due to the occupation

Most common symptoms of tendinitis are a pain, tenderness and mild swelling often described as a dull ache in the affected location particularly, in the limb or joint.

Tendonitis should be treated according to the medical guideline. The untreated condition may cause some complications, including chronic pain in the affected area that may interfere with daily activity and reduce the quality of life. Some untreated tendonitis may cause pain to spread to other parts of the body.

Some patients with untreated tendonitis are also experiencing psychological problems, such as anxiety and depression due to constant pain.

Green tea, a precious drink processes numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and Western world.

According to the study of the effect of GT and/or glycine in the diet on tendinitis on Wistar rats, randomly divided into seven groups (G): control group (C); G1 and G4, tendinitis; G2 and G5, tendinitis supplied with GT; and G3 and G6, tendinitis supplied with GT and a glycine diet for 7 or 21 days, respectively, group with tendinitis treated with green tea demonstrated a significant effect in enhanced collagen stability through expression of hydroxyproline in compared to other groups.

Furthermore, GT and glycine alone treated groups showed an increased activity of metalloproteinase-2 MMP-2 levels which has been associated with the healing process of the fibrous connective tissue in tendinitis patients.

In compared to control and non GT treatment groups, application of green tea or GT+ glycine group displayed a statistical significance in the decreased muscle retardation.

After taking into account all co-founders, Dr. Vieira CP, the lead author said, " GT + a glycine diet has beneficial effects that aid in the recovery process of the tendon after tendinitis".

Interestingly, in the study investigated the remodeling effects of green tea and glycine in the myotendinous junction (MTJ) of male Wistar rats with tendinitis, randomly divided into five groups: animals without tendinitis and animals with tendinitis; animals with tendinitis supplied with green tea; animals with tendinitis supplied with a glycine diet; animals with tendinitis supplied with a green tea and glycine diet, researcher found that all treatment groups exerted a profound effect in regulated the activity of metalloproteinases (MMP)-2 with function in remodeling the tendon after tendinitis, MMP-8 and -9 which are associated to remodeling tissue expression in the disease progression and induced the synthesis of type I collagen regulation by cell spreading, platelet-derived growth factor and interactions with collagen fibers.

Moreover, rats groups treated above application also demonstrated an increase of glycosaminoglycans, in stimulating the regenerative processes, while maintaining host cell characteristics and function and non-collagenous proteins in modulated the development of fine fibrils presented in collagen fibers of connective tissue

Additionally, the combination of green tea and glycine also modulated the inflammatory process through the stimulated production of anti-inflammatory factors and induced the synthesis of the elements, such as extracellular matrix involved in the post-lesion recovery of the tissue.

These results indicated that the recovery from injured tendon can be achieved through improving the compaction of the collagen molecules and inducing assembly of early collagen fibers.

After taking into account all cofounders, researchers, and colleagues at the Anat Rec said, " each region of the inflamed tendon can exhibit different responses during the treatment and therefore, modify its extracellular matrix components to facilitate recovery and repair".

The findings suggested that green tea may be considered a functional food for speeding up the healing of tendinitis.

However, intake of supplement for treatment of tendinitis should be taken with exceptional care in the prevention of acute liver toxicity.

Yoga Improves Psychological and Physical Symptoms and Quality of Life in Ulcerative Colitis Patients

Kyle J. Norton (Master of Nutrients, All right reserved)

Yoga may be used as secondary therapy in improved psychological and physical activities and enhanced quality of life in patients with ulcerative colitis, studies suggested

Ulcerative colitis is one form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) characterized by long-lasting inflammation and ulcers (sores) in the digestive tract.

Yoga, the ancient practice for harmonized external and internal body well being, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement, and gesture..... has been well known for people in the Western world and some parts in Asia.

In the study of a total of 77 patients (75% women; 45.5 ± 11.9 years) with ulcerative colitis in clinical remission due to impaired quality of life randomly assigned to yoga (12 supervised weekly sessions of 90 min; n = 39) researchers indicated that
* Yoga group improved a significant quality of life compared to control after 12 weeks of the lesson, and additionally, at week 12, the improvement in yoga group reached a clinically relevant increase in quality of life.

* Yoga participants also expressed a reduced activity of the disease after 24 weeks.

* Only 3 patient experienced serious adverse events
Dr. Cramer H, the led author after adjusting to other factors said, "Yoga can be considered as a safe and effective ancillary intervention for patients with ulcerative colitis and impaired quality of life".

The improvement of quality of the life in tested subjects due to the reduction of physical and psychological symptoms was attributed to yoga slow breathing, meditation in enhancing the function of the central nervous system in hormone rebalancing which has a strong impact in the inhibition of psychological symptoms in the participants and yoga posture in strengthening the muscles and promoting blood circulation to the body need for physical activity, thus reducing physical symptoms.

Additionally, in support to the above analysis, researchers at the joint study led by All India Institute of Medical Sciences conducted a study of 100 IBD patients [ulcerative colitis (UC) n = 60 and Crohn's disease (CD) n = 40] during the clinical remission phase of disease, randomly assigned to either the yoga group with an 8-week yoga intervention (physical postures, pranayama, and meditation), 1- hour/day in addition to standard medical therapy (UC, n = 30; CD, n = 20) or the control group (UC, n = 30; CD n = 20), researchers after taking into account co and confounders found the below interesting results
* Yoga group displayed a reduction of UC patients in reported arthralgia, compared to control

* Numbers of Yoga group experienced reduced intestinal colic pain were lower compared to higher in the control group.

3. Yoga participants also expressed an improvement of state and trait anxiety levels.

These results suggested that yoga practice with meditation and slow breathing also have a strong effect in influence the hormone production of the central nervous system. By calming the central nervous system in reducing overproduction of certain hormones that are responsible for muscle constriction, thus decreasing pain.

Taking all together, yoga may be considered an integrated form of exercise for improvement of psychological and physical activities and quality of life in ulcerative colitis patients without inducing any side effects.

Yoga, the Integrated form of Exercise in Alleviating Symptoms of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOs)

By Kyle J. Norton (Master of Nutrients, All right reserved)

Yoga therapy may be considered an integrated form of exercise in reducing symptoms in women with Polycystic ovarian syndrome.

The polycystic ovarian syndrome is an endocrinologic disease among reproductive-age women caused by undeveloped follicles clumping on the ovaries that interfere with the function of the normal ovaries, associated with a high risk for the metabolic disorder.

Sadly, women with PCOs also have a higher risk of menstrual disorders, infertility, abnormal levels of hormone levels.

Certain medical conditions are also found to associate to the onset of PCOs such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, and triglycerides.

Researchers do not know why women who process the same health condition and follow a similar diet pattern, some are susceptible to the onset of the syndrome, while others do not.

However, epidemiological studies suggested that family history of PCOs, fast food diet habits, body mass index and waist circumference are possible risk factors for the development of PCOS.

Some researchers also suggested that the mutated gene inherited from the parents are also a major factor that causes PCOs, including gene CYP11a.

Most common symptoms of PCOs include overexpression of acne, overweight or obesity, abdominal pain, the excessive male pattern of hair growth on the face, nipple area, chest, lower abdomen, bald spots, dark patches. In some women. The syndrome also can lead to psychological symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Treatment of PCOs is totally depended on the presence of the symptoms including medication for treatment of overexpression of hormone androgen and insulin resistance.

Yoga, the ancient technique for harmonized external and internal body well being, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement, and gesture..... has been well known for people in the Western world and some parts in Asia.

In a study of Ninety (90) adolescent (15-18 years) girls from a residential college in Andhra Pradesh satisfied the Rotterdam criteria and randomly assigned into 2 groups with yoga group practiced a holistic yoga module, while the control group practiced a matching set of physical exercises (1 hour/day, for 12 weeks), researchers after adjusting to other co confounders, showed that
*Yoga group expressed a significant change in hormones Anti-müllerian hormone AMH luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and LH/FSH ratio and particularly in hormone testosterone, compared to control.

* Yoga group also showed an improvement of The Ferriman–Gallwey score in evaluating and quantifying Hirsutism.

* There were an insignificant change of FSH and prolactin after intervention in both groups.

*4. More importantly, yoga group displayed favorably in changes of menstrual frequency compared to control

Dr. Nidhi R, the led author after reviewing the efficacy in yoga group, said, "A holistic yoga program for 12 weeks is significantly better than physical exercise in reducing AMH, LH, and testosterone, mFG score for hirsutism, and improving menstrual frequency with nonsignificant changes in body weight, FSH, and prolactin in adolescent PCOS"

The efficacy of yoga practice in reducing the expression of the male pattern of hair growth and changes of menstrual frequency is attributed to meditation and slow breathing in calming the central nervous system in response to hormone production. Thus reducing overexpression of certain hormones that associate to the symptoms of PCOs.

Additionally, in the investigated yoga therapy in the reduced primary symptoms of glucose metabolism and blood lipid levels in adolescent girls with polycystic ovary syndrome in same above group met the Rotterdam criteria for PCOS, researchers found that
* Yoga intervention displays a significant improvement of fasting insulin, fasting blood glucose, and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance compared to control.

* Yoga group also expresses a strong effect in blood lipid values except for high-density lipoprotein cholesterol.

* There was no change of body mass index, waist circumference, hip circumference, and waist-to-hip ratio, in both groups

Interestingly, in the study of possible use of Kapalabhati yoga technique to combat metabolic syndrome (MS) and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), researchers at the Cyberjaya University College of Medical Sciences conducted a review of published literature from PubMed, Scopus, and found that Kapalabhati may be helpful in reducing symptoms of various features of MS, but its efficacy against PCOS had not been found.

Dr. Ansari RM after adjusting to other aspects said, "since both syndromes arise due to a common factor hyperinsulinemia primarily induced by stress in this modern world, it is hypothesized that Kapalabhati holds good against PCOS too ".

How yoga exhibited these kinds of effect are unclear, However, according to the article "Yoga for a Metabolic Makeover" written by CATHERINE GUTHRIE stress relief and feelings of well-being fostered by a regular yoga practice serve to rebalance the nervous system may be the major factor that  has a strong effect in the improvement of metabolic syndrome through reducing the overexpression of pro-inflammatory cytokine in facilitating the onset of type 2 diabetes and lipid peroxidation, thus reducing the risk of insulin resistance and high blood cholesterol"

The information collected from above differentiation suggested that yoga may be used as a secondary and integrated form of exercise combined with standard treatment in reduceing the symptoms of PCOs.

Beware of Excessive Coffee and Coffee Caffeine Intake In the Risk Of Pregnancy Loss, Scientists Suggest

By Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Bad news for pregnant women and coffee lovers, excessive maternal caffeinated coffee intake may associate to increased risk of pregnancy loss, some studies suggested

Pregnancy loss is a natural death of an embryo or fetus before it is born, including spontaneous abortion, miscarry, stillbirth...

Coffee, becoming a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roast bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

In a total of 130 456 participants and 3429 cases in fourteen included studies, researchers found that women with
* No or very low caffeine intake, have a relative risk of pregnancy loss of 1.02.

* Moderate intake (150-349 mg/d) showed an increased relative risk of 1·16.

* High intake (350-699 mg/d) showed a relative risk of 1·40.

* Very high intake (≥ 700 mg/d) showed a relative risk of 1·72

The risks of pregnancy loss were increased linearly and correlatively to numbers of a cup of coffee intake per day.

According to the joint study led by the National University of Singapore and National University Health System, additional intake of 1 cup of coffee in women who are regular coffee drinkers similar to 100 mg/d increment caffeine intake was associated with 7% higher risk of pregnancy loss.

Furthermore, a case-control and cohort review study reported in English, the exposure of caffeine/coffee consumption during pregnancy, from selected 26 studies included (20 of caffeine and eight of coffee) suggested that the relative risk ratio of pregnancy loss due to caffeine consumption was 1.32

The study also found that risk of pregnancy loss increased substantially to 19% for every increased caffeine intake of 150 mg/day and every additional 2 cups of coffee intake, the risk of pregnancy loss increased by 8%.

The findings suggested that excessive maternal caffeinated coffee intake is associated to increase the risk of pregnancy loss. However, researchers can not explain why? pregnant women with the same health condition and gestation age, some are susceptible to pregnancy loss while others do not.

These results might suggest that although excessive coffee intake during pregnancy is considered a risk factor, there must be some others unknown risk factors involved in the manifestation of the onset of the loss.

Truly, there are many implications associated with pregnancy loss including ages of the father, genetic mutation or polymorphism in the father that can lead to the production abnormal chemicals or hormones by the embryo, sperm quality sperm chromosomes, ..... and unhealthy lifestyle choice of the father may also associate to the risk of pregnancy loss.

Dr. By Dr. Suhasini Inamdar, in the article "A man’s unhealthy lifestyle may also be responsible for a miscarriage: posed in the Economic Time wrote, "Men who drink alcohol heavily also have lower sperm motility and concentration. - Excess coffee consumption can further lead to reduced sperm concentration and count.  Men who eat red meat have lower implantation and resultant pregnancy rates as well. Not getting enough vitamin D and vitamin B12"

Taking all together, there is no doubt that excessive intake of coffee during pregnancy-induced high risk of pregnancy loss but according to the statistic, North American women seldom drink more than 4 cups/day so we may be in the safe zones.

Herbal Anise and It's Bioactive Anethole That Kill Fungi Before They Can Cause Infection

Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Anise may have a potential and substantial antifungal effect, some scientists suggested.

Antifungal activity is the systematic immune response with an aim to protect the body against damage and injury by destroying fungal invasion during the acute phase of infection.

In the plants, certain chemicals or pigments found the outer layer is also the natural anti microorganisms agents with a function to that protect the plants against certain microorganisms in causing harm and interfering with the plants' survival.

Fungal diseases are often caused by fungi found in the environment. They are easy to treat if diagnosed early. However, untreated and late diagnosed fungal diseases may cause some serious complications such as lung infection, infertility and sometimes be life-threatening due to toxicity.

Dr. Robinson PA, the lead scientist in the study of life-threatening fungal infections in patients who cannot be treated with conventional antifungal agents, wrote, " .......in patients with serious fungal infections who failed to respond to or could not tolerate conventional antifungal therapy. Patients were enrolled if they had a life-threatening fungal infection and conventional therapy had failed to eradicate the infection, had caused serious toxic reactions, or was contraindicated".

If you are currently taking conventional medicine such as clotrimazole, econazole, or miconazole for treatment of fungal infection, please make sure that you know the adverse effects, particularly if you are taking them on a long-term basis.

Anise is a flowering plant of the species of Pimpinella anisum, genus Pimpinella, belongings to the family Apiaceae native to Egypt and the Mediterranean region, used in traditional herbal medicine as a fragrance in soaps, oils, and mouth fresheners and stomachic, antiseptic, anti-spasmodic,...

Chemical constituents
Anethole, D-pinene, I-phellandrene, Alpha-terpineol, Safrol, Methyl chavicol, Resin, Shikimic acid, etc.

In the evaluation of the antifungal activities of fluid extract and essential oil isolated from Anise researchers at the University of Zagreb found that application of Anise fluid extract displays a significant antimycotic activity against Candida albicans, C. parapsilosis, C. tropicalis, C. pseudotropicalis, and C. krusei at the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) between 17 and 20%
and dermatophyte species (Trichophyton rubrum, T. mentagrophytes, Microsporum canis, and M. gypseum) with MIC values between 1.5 and 9.0%.

In compared to the fluid extract, Anise essential oil showed a very strong antifungal activity in yeasts with MIC lower than 1.56% (V/V) and dermatophytes with MIC lower than 0.78% (V/V).

Further, in the examine the efficacy of fluid extract researchers surprisingly found that fluid extract not only does not exert any inhibition of species of C. glabrata but also promotes the growth of activity of Geotrichum spp. in compared to essential oil counterpart.

These results suggested that although the fluid extract and essential oil react differently in fungal inhibition, the essential oil expressed an impressively stronger antifungal activity against all species but weaker in compared to nystatin(an antifungal medication) in Geotrichum spp.

Moreover, due to the statistically significant difference of MIC values (p < 0.01) between the essential oils and the fluid extract of anise, researchers suspected that some very potent fungicidal components must be presented in the essential oil of Anise, but not in the fluid extract or only presented in a very low concentration.

Interestingly, in compared to ketoconazole(an antifungal drug), the fluid extract and essential oil of Anise pronounced a substantially higher or equal antifungal activity.

Dr. Kosalec I, after taking into account other co-founders, said, "Anise essential oil exhibited stronger antifungal activities against yeasts and dermatophytes with MIC values between 0.10 and 1.56% (V/V),(in compared to 1.5 and 9.0% of the extract), respectively".

Some researchers suggested that anethole, a major chemical compound found on Anise essential oil may be the component which exerted a significant effect against plant pathogenic fungi, according to the data obtained by hydro-distillation analyzed for its chemical composition by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS).

Indeed, trans-Anethole of 89.5% and cis-anethole 0.7% were found in high concentration in the essential oil but not in the fluid extract.

Anethole expressed a significant antifungal effect, probably through exhibiting antioxidant activities and stimulating the natural antioxidants produced by the body to protect the healthy cell against oxidative damage induced by expression of ROS caused by the proliferation of fungal species.

More importantly, anethole also inhibited chitin, an important structural component of the cell walls of many fungi indirectly governed by an enzymatic activity in permeabilized hyphae, filaments that make up the mycelium of a fungus.in a dose-dependent manner.

These differentiations suggested that anethole may be developed as natural fungicides for plant disease control in fruit and vegetable preservation without inducing intolerantly adverse effect.

Taken together, Anise and its bioactive anethole may be considered as a functional herb for reduced risk, progression and combined with conventional medicine for treatment of fungal overgrowth.

Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in reducing the onset, progression, and treatment of inflammatory-rheumatic-disorders-induced fibromyalgia, some scientists suggested.

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic condition characterized by muscle and soft tissue pain, In other words, patients with the syndrome are experiencing widespread pain and increased sensitivity to pain.

The condition affects over 10 million (3.6% of the population) people in the US.

The inflammatory rheumatic disorder is a condition of autoimmune disorders caused by inflammatory connective tissues, joint, and vessels of the body, including rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and vasculitis.

The exact causes of fibromyalgia are unknown. However, researchers do know that certain risk factor, including genetic mutation inherited from the parents, age, emotional and physic abuse in the childhood, gender, and posttraumatic stress disorder are associated with the higher risk of the syndrome develops.

Some researchers also suggested that chronic arthritis, persistent stress, anxiety, and depression and physical inactivity are associated with the increased risk of the onset of the incidence.

Conventional medicine such as pregabalin (Lyrica), duloxetine (Cymbalta), and milnacipran (Savella) used in pain management in patients with FM may be effective, however, they can induce some common side effects including gastrointestinal discomforts, constipation, dry mouth.

In some patient, intake of the medicine may cause the side effect of insomnia, high blood pressure, and irregular heartbeats.

Green tea is a precious drink processed numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.

According to the Cairo University, as many as 15-30% of patients with classic inflammatory rheumatic disorders also have a co-morbid fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) compared to the rate of only 2% of the prevalence of FMS in the general population (2%).

These results suggested that rheumatological syndromes have a strong implication in the development of fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) compared to other initiators such as stress.

Therefore, patients with chronic rheumatic diseases are capable of triggering condition of fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS).

Due to the highly correlated rheumatologic disease and FMS component, researchers postulated "Considerations of the FMS component in the management of rheumatologic diseases increase the likelihood of the success of the treatment" and "(prevented) FMS in misdiagnosed as an autoimmune disorder"

In the study of the effect of green tea's active ingredient, epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG) in risk of inflammatory rheumatic disorders in collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) in mice, researchers found that application of green tea demonstrates a substantially marked inhibition of the inflammatory mediators cyclooxygenase (COX) -2 in converting arachidonic acid to stimulate the production of proinflammatory cytokine prostaglandin H2, in the catalyzation of symptoms of inflammation in the muscles.

Furthermore, green tea EGCG oral ingestion also inhibited levels of interferon gamma in precipitated inflammation by modulating T-cells and natural killer cells activated by antigens, mitogens or alloantigens to the site of infection.

Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) involved in systemic inflammation, one of the cytokines that make up the acute phase reaction in mice was also inhibited by injection of green tea EGCG.

These results suggested that green tea ameliorated symptoms expression of inflammatory rheumatic disorders, through attenuating production pro-inflammatory factors without reducing the healing progression of injured tissue.

The above differentiation was supported by the study of green tea extract GTE in ameliorating rat adjuvant-induced arthritis.

According to the researchers, a daily per-oral administration of GTE (200 mg/kg) reduced expression of RA through reducing the levels of MCP-1/CCL2 in expression (which can also be treated by biological agents, such as antibodies and inhibitory peptides) of a variety of diseases characterized by mononuclear cell infiltration involved substantial biological and genetic evidence, including RA.
and GROα/CXCL1 in the recruitment of inflammatory cells in the wound healing process after injury in angiogenesis and in the formation of granulation tissue of wounds.

Additionally, application of green tea beside attenuated the expression of proinflammatory factors.

Green tea also exhibited the production of chemokine receptors CCR-1, CCR-2, CCR-5 by reducing the direct communication between the innate and adaptive immune responses that initiate the development of inflammatory responses. through inactivation of leukocytes in the inflamed tissues in the contribution to the pathogenesis of inflammatory and autoimmune diseases and CXCR1 receptor in binding to IL-8 to reduce the expression some inflammatory cytokines, such as epidermal growth factor (EGF) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α).

Some researchers suggested that application of green tea extract may also reduce the symptoms of arthritis through expression of IL-6 levels, as increased levels of Il-6 was associated to the presence and progression of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) found in conventional clinical and laboratory indices and MMP-2 activity in activated immune inflammatory response through inducing production of pro-inflammatory factors.

Taken together, green tea and its bioactive compound such as EGCG may have a profound and therapeutic effect in reducing the onset, progression, and treatment of fibromyalgia-induced by inflammatory rheumatic disorders through modulating the production of pro and anti-inflammatory proteins.

However, intake of green tea supplement should be taken with extreme care due to recent reports of acute liver toxicity.
