* Herbal Emodin, The Bioactive Ingredient That Treats Herpes Simplex Virus Infection

By Kyle J. Norton

Herbal Cascara Sagrada containing major bioactive compound Emodin may be considered as a functional herb that inhibits diseases caused by infection of Herpes simplex virus, some scientists found.

Herpes simplex virus 1 and 2, the 2 members of the herpersvirus family, also are best known as human herpesvirus 1 and 2.

The classification of the virus are based on their likelihood to cause infection. According WHO(5), in expression of conventional medicine, there is no cure of the diseases and both HSV-1 and HSV-2 infections are lifelong.

* HSV-1 is mainly transmitted by oral-to-oral contact such as oral herpes.

* HSV-2 is a sexually transmitted infection.

However, both HSV-1 and HSV-2 can cause genital herpes.

According to statistic, approximately 3.7 billion people under age 50 (67%) are infected by HSV-1 and  417 million people aged 15-49 (11%) are infected by HSV-2 globally.

Some patients infected by the virus do not experience any symptoms, however, some may affect by symptoms of painful blisters or ulcers at the site of infection.

The virus are very contagious in the presence of symptoms but they can also transmitt to other from virus carriers who experience no symptoms at all.

Some researchers suggested that risk of HIV infection is strongly associated to patients who are infected by with HSV-2 with or without symptoms.

The study of risk factors of HSV-1 and 2
* (HSV-1) By the University of Bielefeld includes coitus experience, oral lesion, seropositivity and a higher level of perceived stress. And according to the returned questionnaire from participants, most lifestyle, gender or age are not risk factors with drinking alcohol was found to be a protective factor(3).

* (HSV-2) By the University of Washington, include, seropositivity (include female gender), race (black), history of sexually transmitted infections, increasing numbers of sexual partners, sexual contact with commercial sex workers and low socio-economic status or level of education.

Particularly, age is considered as a related risk factors as it, likely reflects the cumulative number of sex partners, age of initiation of sexual activity, and duration of sexual activity as well as chronice nature of HSV-2 infection"(4).

Conventional medicine used for treatment of herpes simplex virus may be effective but inducing serious side effects of nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, digestive discomforts, headache, dizziness. fatigue,....  joint and muscle aches. In serious case, the medicine may cause visual changes.

Cascara sagrada is a species of buckthorn, genus Rhamnus, belongings to the family Rhamnaceae, native to western North America.

The herbal medicine bark has been used in traditional medicine for gastrointestinal support, thought its laxative and natural cleansing,

The chemical ingredients
Beside the main compound of anthraquinones, otyher compounds include anthraquinone glycosides, (emodin, frangulin, iso-emodin, aloe-emodin, and chrysophanol), rhein, aloin, malic acid, tannic acid, cascarosides A, B, C, and D,...... and hydroxy anthracene derivatives (HAD).

Emodin, the major component found in many herbs including ascara Sagrada, in the study against HSV infection exerted a significant effect in inhibited the replication of HSV-1 and HSV-2 in cell culture at the concentration of 50 μg/ml with antiviral index of 2.07 and 3.53, respectively(1).
In animal model, treatment of emodin increased the survival rate of HSV-infected mice, prolonged survival time(1).

After additional analysis of the experiment Dr. Xiong HR, the lead author suggested, injection of emodin expressed a higher efficacy in eliminated the virus from brain, heart, liver and ganglion, in compared to the viral controls.

According to the differentiation of the China Medical University, application of emodin not only demonstrated a strong apoptotic activity in HSV cell cycle arrest, but also reduced the plaque formation with an EC(50) of 21.5+/-4.4 muM(2).

Virus plaque formation according to plaque reduction assay is a measurement of  plaque that the spread of progeny viruses released by individually infected cells is restricted to neighboring cells(7).

The Immunohistochemical staining using the anti-nucleocapsid protein antibody also demonstrated that emodin inhibited HSV infection through induced the accumulation of viral nucleocapsids (which refer to the protein coat (capsid) and the nucleic acid) in the nucleus in a dose-dependent manner(2).

More over, emodin also inhibited the yields of HSV-1 via the suppression of a novel target, UL12, a HSV-1 gene which plays an important role in processing viral DNA intermediates for survival by promoting production.

The findings suggested that herbal Cascara Sagrada process anti herpes simplex virus potential through cell cycle arrest and disrupted viral DNA which promotes reduplication.

However, further data collection on large example size and multi centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of Cascara Sagrada anti Herpes simplex virus possibilities.

* Caffeinated Coffee, The Liver Protective and Anti Non Alcoholic Liver Disease Beverage

By Kyle J. Norton

Habitual caffeinated coffee intake may have a potential of curing Non Alcoholic Liver Disease, some scientists found.

Non-alcohol fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a chronic medical condition of fatty liver caused by excessive fat deposited (steatosis) in the liver other than over consumption of alcohol.

The disease is a common liver disorder found in most developed countries, probably due to over consumption of carbohydrates which are considered as a major stimulus for hepatic de novo lipogenesis (DNL), the esterification of plasma free fatty acids, such as American diet.

According to clinical assessment conducted by the joint study lead by the Global Clinical Research, " Hepatic de novo lipogenesis(DNL), the synthesis of new fatty acids from non-lipid sources, is thought to play a pivotal role in the development of NAFLD"(4).

In compared to lipids that were defined as soluble substances in organic solvents, including the various types of fatty acids, eicosanoids, fatty alcohols, fatty aldehydes, ...... and hydrocarbons, fatty acids from non-lipid sources are men make substances that do not rely on organic solvents, but use other chemicals to separate the lipids from the rest of the food, including butter milk fat, beef fat (tallow, suet), chicken fa,t cream pork fat, (lard),... and stick margarine

Dr. Paglialunga S. the lead author suggested as of today, there is no NAFLD-specific therapeutic agent available. However, pharmaceutical drugs aimed at reducing hepatic fat accretion may prove to be a powerful ally in the treatment and management of this disease(4).

Some researchers also said, a chronic metabolic derangement referred as steatosis are directly associated to patients with obesity and type 2 diabetes(4).

According to the statistic, approximately, 80 millions of US adults suffer from Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in which 30% to 40% of those patients show no visible signs and symptoms.

However, most patient with Non Alcoholic Liver Disease may experience signs and symptoms of abdominal swelling, enlarged blood vessels just beneath the skin's surface, spleen, red palms,.... and jaundice as a result of liver advanced scarring (steatohepatitis and cirrhosis).

If you have some of above symptoms, please see your doctor right the way to rule out the possibility.

Coffee, second to green tea, is a popular and social beverage all over the world, particular in the West, made from roasted bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

According to a retrospective cross-sectional study on patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), hepatitis C virus (HCV), and hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection to determine the effects of coffee intake on a non-invasive marker of liver fibrosis, coffee intake of 2 or more cups per day demonstrated a significant reduced liver symptom of stiffness, after adjustment for age, gender, smoking, alcohol consumption, in compared to other subgroups.

Additionally, in the review of epidemiological and clinical evidence by the Zhejiang University, researcher suggested coffee intake may have a profoundly reduced severity and risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) prevalence.

In fact, the effect of coffee in attenuated risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) incidence may be also involved other chemical constituents other than caffeine.

Dr. Chen S, the lead researchers suggested that said, "Several possible mechanisms underlying coffee's hepatoprotective effects in NAFLD include antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and antifibrotic effects".

Interestingly, the review of literature published in database of Medline and Embase up to March 2015, showed that coffee and coffee caffeine intake have a strong impact in protect liver against complications of fibrosis incidence.

Information collected indicated that coffee and coffee caffeine intake have an enormous demonstration in ameliorated risk and symptoms of Non alcoholic liver disease, but some researchers suggested that other components may also play an important role in enhancement of these results.

* Chamomile Tea, The Herbal Tea That Works Better Than Sleeping Pills, With No Side Effects, Scientists Said

By Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Intake of chamomile may have a strong and positive effect in prevented and treated insomnia, some scientists suggested.

Insomnia is a chronic sleep disorder characterized by difficulty of falling sleep and/or staying asleep. The condition affects most of the population of older adults due to hormones change that are associated to aging.

Most adults have experienced insomnia sometimes in their life. According to statistic, more than 30% of the population suffers from insomnia, one in three people suffer from some form of insomnia during their lifetime and women suffer from insomnia more often than men.

Some researchers suggested that psychiatric and medical conditions, unhealthy sleep habits, and in healthy diet and life style, particularly in use of substances, and/or certain biological factors are major causes of insomnia onset.

Some women in certain stages of menstrual  cycle also suffer from this type of sleep disorder, due to the body inability to cope with sudden change of hormone production. Needless to say,  insomnia that is caused by menstrual pain. According to the National Sleep Foundation poll, 33% of women said, their sleep is disturbed during their menstrual cycles.

In Australia, according to statistic produced by Virtual Medical Center, "Almost 90% of Australians suffer from a sleeping disorder, with 30% experiencing a severe sleeping disorder" and  "There are over 70 different defined sleep disorders which result in reduced sleep quantity or reduced sleep quality"(4).

Poor sleep quality in patients who suffer from insomnia may induce symptoms of fatigue, irritability, decreased memory and concentration,..... and malaise.
These results truly have a strongly negative impact on quality of life and work life, resulting in decreasing productivity and increasing absenteeism.

Use of sleep pill to treat insomnia may be effective, however, according to the Additive Center, "The dangerous effects of sleep medications range from seizures to depressed breathing. Some people also experience allergic reactions from sleeping pills that can cause difficulty breathing, chest pain, nausea and swelling" and "Though rare, people who use sleeping pills may even develop parasomnias. Parasomnias are defined as sleep disorders that include behaviors like sleep-walking, sleep-eating, sleep-sex, sleep-driving and other potentially dangerous sleep-related activities"(5).

Chamomile is also known as camomile, common name of many species daisy-like plants in the family Asteraceae.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory constituents and to treat menstrual cramps and sleep disorders, reduce cramping and spastic pain in the bowels, relieve excessive gas,..... and bloating in the intestine.

Ingredients
Guaianolides matricarin and achillin, acetoxyachillin and leucodin (= desacetoxymatricarin), corresponding C-11 stereoisomers(a),(Z)-2-β-d-glucopyranosyloxy-4-methoxycinnamic acid (cis-GMCA), chlorogenic acid, (E)-2-β-d-glucopyranosyloxy-4-methoxycinnamic acid (trans-GMCA), quercetagetin-7-O-β-d-glucopyranoside, luteolin-7-O-β-d-glucoside, apigenin-7-O-β-d-glucoside, chamaemeloside, apigenin 7-O-(6″-O-acetyl-β-d-glucopyranoside), apigenin] and one polyacetylene (tonghaosu)(b).

Chamomile, is one of most popular herb used for sleep disorders in herbal medicine.

According to the Dr. Srivastava JK and research team at the Case Western Reserve University, in the investigation of The dried flowers of chamomile containing many terpenoids and flavonoids that may contribute to its medicinal properties, found that, injection in form of herbal tea, consumed more than one million cups per day worldwide, may have a significant impact in treatment of insomnia(1).

In the concerns of chamomile's (Matricaria recutita) efficacy and safety for treating chronic primary insomnia, scientists at the University of Michigan conducted an experiment of 34 patients aged 18-65 years with DSM-IV primary insomnia for ≥ 6-months, showed that application of 270 mg of chamomile twice daily or placebo for 28-days exerts a modest benefits of daytime functioning and mixed benefits on sleep diary(2).

Dr. Zick SM, the lead author at the end of the evaluation, said, "Chamomile did show modest advantage on daytime functioning, although these did not reach statistical significance. Effect sizes were generally small to moderate (Cohen's d ≤ 0.20 to < 0.60) with sleep latency, night time awakenings, and Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), having moderate effect sizes in favor of chamomile"(2).

The efficacy of chamomile in treatment of insomnia may also be attributed to the anxiolytic or sedative properties in improvement of sleep, according to the study of traditionally endowed with anxiolytic or sedative properties,(3).

However, Dr. Wheatley D suggested, " it's slow onset of effect (2-3 weeks) renders it unsuitable for short-term use (i.e. 'jet-lag'), but it does have profound beneficial effects on sleep architecture (augments deep sleep) that may make it particularly suitable for long-term use and for the elderly"(3).

The findings suggested that chamomile may be used as functional food to improve insomnia due to the procession of anxiolytic or sedative properties.

* Avocado, The Prominent Fruit That Arrests Prostate Cancer Cells Cycle Division

By Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Scientists may have  found a popular fruit that has a profound and positive effect in prevention and treatment of prostate cancer, some studies suggested.

Prostate cancer is a medical and chronic disease characterized by cells growth disorderly and uncontrollably in the tissue of prostate gland. At the later stage, cancerous cells may travel a distance away from the prostate gland to infect other healthy tissue and organs.

According to statistic in US, 1 in 9 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime. Approximately, 6 cases out of 10 diagnosed with the condition are men aged 65 or older.

In 2017, 21,300 men in Canada were diagnosed with prostate cancer which represents 21% of all new cancer cases in men. And 4,100 men died from the disease(4).

Although Inherited mutations such as BRCA1 and BRCA2 that cause abnormal cell growth in the prostate gland are considered a major cause of prostate cancer, Acquired gene mutations such as over production of androgens (male hormones) gene that promote prostate cell growth also contribute to prostate cancer risk in some men.

However, over years of studies also suggested that  increases of age, ethnic group, family history, obesity, environment chemical,.... and unhealthy diet are also have a strong implication in induction to the onset of prostate cancer.

Due to the slow progression of the disease, most patients do not experience any symptoms until the advance stage. Most common symptoms including blood in urine (hematuria), burning or pain during urination, difficulty urinating, decreased flow or velocity of urine stream, ......more frequent urges to urinate at night.

In some cases, patients may also be loss of bladder control.

If you experience some of above symptoms, please check with your doctor immediately to rule out the possibility.

Avocados are a commercially valuable fruit cultivated in tropical climates throughout the world.

The fruit has a green-skinned, pear-shaped fruit that ripens after harvesting, native to the Caribbean, Mexico, South America and Central America, belonging to the flowering plant family Lauraceae.

Chemical constituents
The fruit contains campesterol, high amounts of β-sitosterol; fatty acids (approximately 60% monounsaturated, 20% saturated, and 20% unsaturated); high amounts of glutathione (27.7 mg/100 g); approximately 2% protein; 6–9% carbohydrates and sugars (glucose, fructose, d-mannoheptulose, a taloheptulose, and an alloheptulose); two bitter substances (1-acetoxy-2,4-dihydroxyheptadeca-16-ene and 1,2,4-trihydroxyheptadeca-16-ene); carnitine; proanthocyanidins; persenones A and B(a).

According to the Case-control study of 209 men 40-80 years old with newly diagnosed, histologically confirmed prostate cancer and 226 cancer-free men attending the same urology clinics conducted by the University of the West Indie, intake of dietary MUFA from whole fruit of avocado are associated to reduced risk and treatment of prostate cancer(1).

Dr. Jackson MD, the lead scientist said, "Whole-blood and dietary MUFA reduced the risk of prostate cancer. The association may be related to avocado intakes. High blood linolenic acid was directly related to prostate cancer" and " Dietary intakes of other fats were not associated with PCa"(1).

The University of California study showed that the anti prostate cancer effects of avocado are not attributed to a single ingredient such as carotenoids (zeaxanthin, alpha-carotene, and beta-carotene), lutein but the interaction of all ingredients in the whole fruit in combination with other det-derived phytochemicals(2).

The study suggested, intake of avocado stimulated the increase production of increase in p27 protein which involves function as tumor suppressor in controlling the cell cycle progression, in incubated PC-3 cells(2)

Avocado induced PC- 3 cancer cell death through cells apoptosis through G(2)/M cell cycle arrest the study continued(2).

In the evaluation of the anti cancers effect of avocado conducted by the Purdue University study also showed a positive effect of the whole fruit in inhibition of six human tumor cell lines in culture, including human prostate adenocarcinoma (PC-3) cells(3).

The newly isolated Compounds 3 form of avocado containing g 1,2,4-triol moiety and a long aliphatic chain that terminates as either an alkane, alkene, or alkyne, respectively, exerted a strongest activity against PC-3 in comparable to adriamycin, an anti-cancer conventional medicine(3).

Furthermore, when tested against yellow fever mosquito larva, the 3 form avocado also was more effective than rotenone, a natural botanical insecticide(3).

Therefore, men who are at high risk of prostate cancer may want to add a portion of avocado into their daily diet for preventive measure.

Taken altogether, avocado with abundant carotenoids (zeaxanthin, alpha-carotene, and beta-carotene), lutein may be considered as functional food for prevention and treatment of prostate cancer.

However, additional large sample size and multi center clinical trials with human consumption during the course of the disease are necessary to re confirm avocado anti prostate cancer possibility.

* Green Tea, The Beverage Inhibits A Cluster Conditions That Cause Metabolic Syndrome, Scientists Reveal

Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

A recent study conducted by some renowned institutes suggested that regular drinking of green tea may inhbit the early onset of metabolic syndrome.

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster conditions associated to increase risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes, including abnormal high blood pressure, high blood sugar and cholesterol together with excess body fat around the waist.

People with 3 of above medical conditions are considered to have metabolic syndrome.

According to statistic, approximately, 25% of US adult population have metabolic syndrome.

Some researchers suggested that the syndrome is also associated to condition of obesity as they share the similar component of insulin resistance.

Truly, the syndrome is not caused by single condition but associated to a collection of risk factors,
including  increases with age. race, obesity, diabetes and other diseases (cardiovascular disease, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease or polycystic ovary syndrome).

According to the joint study lead by the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine in investigated the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components among U.S. adults, using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007-2014 data suggested, ".... from 2007 to 2014, the prevalence of MetS remained stable in all sex, age, and race/ethnicity groups. Among the components of MetS, the prevalence of hypertriglyceridemia and fasting hyperglycemia decreased". and "The prevalence of elevated blood pressure and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level remained stable"(4).

Further analysis of the data, scientists found that the prevalence of abdominal obesity continues to increase in women, that can have a strong and lifelong impact in induction of higher risk of metabolic syndrome.

Green tea, a precious drink processes numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and Western world.

In a cross-sectional population-based survey including 8,821 adults (51.4% female) conducted in Krakow, Poland., both coffee and tea drinkers showed a negatively associated with MetS (OR 0.75, 95% CI 0.66, 0.86 and OR 0.79, 95% CI 0.67, 0.92, respectively).

The study also found that high tea consumers had lower BMI, waist circumference, but moderated decreased diastolic blood pressure, as well as negatively correlated central obesity and fasting plasma glucose in women, but not in men, in compared low drinker,

Furthermore, in the study including 8821 adults (51.4 % female), using food frequency questionnaires and matching food consumption data with the Phenol-Explorer database.conducted in Kraków, Poland, dietary polyphenol intake,  a major compound found in green tea  was associated inversely to the development of MetS (OR 0.80; 95 % CI 0.64, 0.98 and OR 0.70; 95 % CI 0.56, 0.86 for both men and women, respectively) in the highest quartile.

Dietary polyphenols in high quality also showed a negative association of WC, blood pressure, high lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides in women, and fasting plasma glucose in both gender..

Dr. Grosso G, the lead author said, "(Depending to types of polyphenols) phenolic acids and stilbenes were significantly associated with MetS; lignans and stilbenes with WC; phenolic acids with blood pressure and triglycerides; and flavonoids with fasting plasma glucose" and " Among specific subclasses of polyphenols, hydroxycinnamic acids, flavanols, and dihydrochalcones had the most relevant role."

In support the role of polyphenol for treatment of Metabolic syndrome,  a study of total of 2725 participants free of hypertension at baseline tested for blood pressure or taking hypertensive medication within the last 2 weeks at 2-4-year follow-up visit was conducted by the Integrated Cancer Registry of Catania-Messina-Siracusa-Enna.

The final results showed that diet of highest quartile of total polyphenol intake was associated with 31% decreased risk of hypertension compared with the lowest intake (OR 0.69, 95% CI 0.48, 0.98) in women with no significant association in men.

The study also stated that most influential phytochemicals in reduced risk and treatment of metabolic syndrome ingredients are phenolic acids, hydroxycynnamic acids as they showed a independently associated to lower odds of hypertension (OR 0.66, 95% CI 0.47, 0.93) in comparison to others.

Taking together, green tea with major chemical compounds of polyphenol may be used as functional foods in inhibited a cluster of conditions which associated to the onset of metabolic syndrome.

Herbal Catnip, The Herbal Medicine and Plant Which Inhibits Inflammatory Diseases

By Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Scientists may have found a herbal medicine that processes anti-inflammatory activity to protect our body from overexpression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in causing damage to healthy cells in the infectious site without reducing inflammatory cytokine activities.

Inflammation is a natural reaction of the immune system which initial protein signaling in stimulated production of inflammatory expression against foreign organisms invasion.

However, under the infectious condition, systematic inflammatory response in some cases may over overact, leading to overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF alpha,.... and
Interleukins (IL) 1 and 6. which are a group of cytokines expressed by white blood cells of the immune system.

The Encyclopaedia Britannica wrote, "Like other cytokines, interleukins are not stored within cells but are instead secreted rapidly, and briefly, in response to a stimulus, such as an infectious agent. Once an interleukin has been produced, it travels to its target cell and binds to it via a receptor molecule on the cell’s surface" and  "This interaction triggers a cascade of signals within the target cell that ultimately alter the cell’s behavior".

Catnip is also known as catswort, or catmint, a plant of Nepeta, belonging to the family of Lamiaceae, native to Europe and Asia.

The herb has been used in herbal medicine as an insect repellant and to treat digestive disorders, children restlessness and nervousness, fevers, cold and flu, skin irritation stimulates sweating, promote menstruation, etc..

Besides the major constituent of terpenoid nepetalactone, the herb also contains α-Pinene, β-Pinene, Cyclohexen-1-yl-methyl ketone, Triplal, Thymol, Nepetalactone, Nepetalactone, etc.

In chronic related inflammation disease induced to 24 male Wister rats weighing 225 ± 25 gm, essential oil of catnip at the doses of 50 mg/kg, 100 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg researchers found that administered doses intraperitoneally exert significant effects in reduced paw edema by alleviating symptoms of both the acute and chronic forms of nociception, through its anti-inflammatory effect(1).

Dr. Ali T, the lead scientists at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, said, " NP 200 mg/kg reduced the pain sensation in the tail flick (p <0.01) and formalin test (p <0.001 in both phases). In paw edema test, NP 100 and 200 mg/kg significantly reduced the inflammation (p <0.01 and p <0.05)"(1).

The efficacy of catnip in inhibited chronic inflammation of experimental rats was attributed to chemical constituents 4aα,7α,7aβ-nepetalactone and 1,8-cineole that form major parts in phytochemicals of the herb.

The Tarbiat Modares University study also showed that Nepeta crispa essential oil enhances anti-inflammatory effects in the formalin-induced paw inflammation model and significantly reduced the paw edema(2).

More precisely, the essential oil injection ameliorated acute pain in animal models, including the tail-flick (p < 0.001) in the first phase of the formalin test (p < 0.01) through the production of analgesia(2).

In the late phase of the formalin test, the essential oil significantly reduced the pain-induced behavior against chronic pain(2).

Furthermore, in the study of extracts and isolated compounds tested against calcineurin, scientists showed that herbal catnip has a direct interaction with calcineurin through anti-inflammatory activity via modulation of T-cell in the mediation of inflammation(3).

Dr. Prescott TA and the research team at the Royal Botanic Gardens suggested, " Calcineurin inhibition should be considered as a potential mode of action when investigating the immunomodulatory activity of caffeoyl phenyle anoid glycoside containing plants"(3).

The findings suggested that herbal catnip may be considered as a functional food for treatment of acute and chronic inflammation without reducing the function of the immune system in protected our body against infection.

However, large sample size and multi-center clinical studies during the course of human consumption are necessary to reaffirm the catnip anti-inflammatory possibility.

How to Protect Your Joints (Articulations) Before and After 60

By Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Scientists may have found a natural herb, namely Cat's claw in suppressing the onset of osteoarthritis without inducing any adverse effects, some studies suggested

Osteoarthritis is a group of diseases involved progressive degeneration of joints, including articular cartilage and subchondral bone.

According to statistic, osteoarthritis(OA) is one of the most common forms of arthritis disorder, affecting adults 60 years of age or older in the United States.

Approximately, over 25 million of US population who are adults 60 years of age or older are infected by symptomatic knee OA, including  10% of men and 13% of women.

However, according to University of Porto Medical School indicated that one must understand the differences in prevalence and incidence estimates of osteoarthritis (OA), according to case definition, in the knee, hip and hand joints.

Conventional medicine, today in the management of osteoarthritis (OA) focuses on pain relief and improved physical function through pharmacological, nonpharmacological, and surgical treatments without mentioning how to cure the disease.

There is evidence suggested that the disease is associated with the inflammation, breakdown, and eventual loss of cartilage in the joints. But what causes the chronic inflammatory of osteoarthritis is debatable?

Some researchers suggested that the process of wear and repair, nutrient deficiency,......and overload and damage of cartilage due to aging or damage are the possible actually cause of osteoarthritis.

The severity symptoms of osteoarthritis, according to experts include pain in joints of the hand, knee and hip and spine. If you experience the above symptoms, you may already have osteoarthritis.

.Cat's claw found in in the tropical jungles of South and Central America, is a genus Uncaria, belonging to the family Rubiaceae.

The specific herbal medicine has been used in traditional medicine over two thousand years as a tonic, contraceptive, anti-inflammatory, and infectious agent, and to treat diarrhea, rheumatic disorders, acne, diabetes, cancer and diseases of the urinary tract, etc..

Chemical constituents
The chemical constituents of Cat's claw include ajmalicine, akuammigine, campesterol, catechin, carboxyl alkyl esters, chlorogenic acid, cinchonain, corynantheine, corynoxeine, daucosterol, epicatechin, harman, hirsuteine, hirsutine, iso-pteropodine, etc.

In the study to understand the effect of Cat's claw isolated active compounds against the pivotal molecular targets involved in inflammation and the joint destruction process and in summarized their 's claw toxicities and efficacy, researchers at the Case Western Reserve University, showed that application of herbal Cat's claw exerts a positive effect in alleviation pain with no adverse effect(1).

Dr. Akhtar N, the lead author after taking account of other co and confounders said, " (Although) Limited in vitro and in vivo evidence is available for cat's claw and Indian olibanum,... There is strong clinical evidence of the effectiveness of devil's claw in pain reduction" and " No serious side effects have been reported for any..... herbs" (1).

According to the study of "Devil's claw extract as an example of the effectiveness of herbal analgesics", Doloteffin (extraction solvent water) a botany herbal preparation included extracted with 60% ethanol of Cat's claw have a proven effectiveness similar to those of conventional painkiller or synthetic analgesics for treatment painful lower back or arthritic pain(2)..

Dr. Chrubasik S. at Institut für Rechtsmedizin der Universität Freiburg, said, " From an evidence-based view, extract with at least 50 mg harpagoside in the daily dose should be recommended for the treatment of pain" and "Treatment with devil's claw extract is associated with a lower risk of adverse events than treatment with synthetic analgesics, and may contribute in the majority of patients to the relief of pain"(2).

This effectiveness may coincide with the use of the herb in herbal medicine for thousands of year in treating disorders such as arthritis, gastritis, and osteoarthritis(3).

Truly, The mechanisms of cat's claw in the treatment of osteoarthritis were attributed to the antioxidants and its inhibition of TNF-alpha.

Tumor necrosis factor α is a cell signaling protein (cytokine) involved systemic inflammation that protects our body against foreign organism infection in acute phase reaction.

Unfortunately, the study in reviews the database by the University of Southampton, raised the question of the methodological quality of the existing clinical trials and suggested that clinical evidence to date cannot provide a definitive answer to the two questions posed, although these trials may provide certain supports for the effectiveness of the herb(4).
* Does it work?
* And (2) is it safe?

Taking all together, Cat's claw may have a profound and substantial effect similar to those of conventional medicine such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Aspirin, naproxen (Aleve), and ibuprofen in ameliorated osteoarthritis pain with little or no side effects(3).

However, intake of Cat's claw supplement only is prescribed by herbalists as an overdose may cause acute liver toxicity.
