Food Therapy: Beet, the Best functional Food in Exhibited Hepatoprotective Effects

Kyle J. Norton

Beet may be considered as a functional food to protect liver against any forming of liver disorders a renowned institute proposed.

Liver diseases are class of disease characterized by disordered function of liver, including cirrhosis, hepatitis, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, non alcoholic liver disease, non-infectious liver diseases, benign liver tumor, liver cancer,......

Beet, best known as beetroot or garden beet, belonging to the amaranth family, is a perennial plant with leafy stems growing to 1–2 m tall.

According to Dr. Hari Singh Gour Vishwavidyalaya, Beta vulgaris Linn. (BV, Chenopodiaceae) leaves extract showed a significant effect in protect liver against hepatoxicity, measured by levels of serum markers enzymes together with antioxidants.

In vitro studies, n-butanol fraction of BV leaves (BVBF) isolated from beet, at doses of 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg exhibited liver protective action against ethanol-induced hepatic toxicity by restorating of biochemical changes in liver tissues.

Furthermore, in carbontetrachloride (CCl(4))-induced liver toxicity injured rats, oral administrated ethanolic extract of Beta vulgaris roots exerted a profound hepatoprotective activity at doses of 1000, 2000 and 4000 mg/kg.

Moreover, in the finding of new phytochemicals isolated from beetroot, researchers found that vitexin 7-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (3), and vitexin 2''-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside, the new compounds also exhibited hepatoportective effect at rates of 65.8 and 56.1%, respectively in rat induced liver toxicity model.

More importantly, others's newly differentiated flavonoids, 2",2"'-di-O-α-rhamnopyranosyl-vicenin II, a di-C-glycosyl flavone, and herbacetin 3-O-β-xylopyranosyl- (1"' --> 2")-O-β-glucopyranoside extracted from leaves of beet, once again demonstrated hepatoprotective effects in intoxicated rat by administration of acetaminophen.

Additionally, the newly acquired compounds of above also demonstrated hypolipidemic activity in reduced risk of liver diseases in rats with high-fat-diet.

Taking together, beet is a potent functional food with plenty liver protective phytochemicals used for prevention and treatment of liver disease.

Food Therapy: Coffee< or = 3 Cups/day in Reduced Risk of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) Incidence

Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrients

Total coffee intake daily is associated to non risk factor but attenuated risk of incidence of rheumatoid arthritis, the  joint study by the Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston and a Asian study, suggested, respectively.

Coffee,  a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roasted bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

Rheumatoid Arthritis is a chronic disorder as a result of inflammation, affecting mostly the flexible (synovial) joints and tissues and organs in the body.

The disease affects more women than men and generally occurs after the ages of 40, causing diminished quality of life of many elders.

In the follow up study of 83,124 women, completed the FFQ at baseline, the diagnosis of incident RA(between 1980 and 2000) with a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) completed every 4 years, from baseline in 1980 through 1998, researchers found that
1. Decaffeinated coffee consumption of >/=4 cups/day (compared with no decaffeinated coffee consumption) showed no subsequent risk of incident RA
2. There was no relationship of incidence of RA or reduced incidence RA in caffeinated coffee consumption, regardless to numbers of cup intake daily.
3.Total coffee and total caffeine consumption were also not associated with the risk of RA.

On the other hand, according to the Korea University College of Medicine, the numbers of coffee intake daily in reduced RA incidence were substantially different in number studies. The highest category of coffee intake in Heliovaara et al. cohort study from Finland was up to 13 cups per day, while US studies was  > 4 cups coffee intake per day.

The study also emphasized that caffeine showed no significant association of RA incidence in compared to caffeinated coffee consumption in ameliorated risk RA incidence.

Furthermore, the study in valuated coffee, tea, and caffeine consumption and risk factors for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) onset among older women, indicated that  risk of RA reduced substantially with drinking > 3 cups/day of decaffeinated coffee in compared to non drinkers.

Interestingly, women who have never drunk coffee before showed an increased risk RA if daily intake of decaffeinated coffee is over 4 cups.

Dr. Mikuls TR, the lead author said, "Decaffeinated coffee intake is independently and positively associated with RA onset" and "Further investigations of decaffeinated coffee and tea intake as arthritis risk factors are needed to verify these findings and explore their biologic basis".

Collectively, the finding evidences suggested that coffee intake is not an independent risk factor but a reduced risk parameters for onset of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) incidence, depending to numbers of cup consumption per day.

Herbal Therapy: Green tea, The Best Drink for Reduced Risk and Treatment of Hypertension

Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrients

Regular drinking of green tea may have a potential effect in maintaining normal blood pressure and reduced risk of hypertension , a recent study suggested.

Hypertension is abnormal high of blood pressure, one of the major risk factor in contributed early onset of cardiovascular disease.

Green tea, considered as a functional food, linking  numbers of health benefit has been reported by several renowned research and studies. However, as yin in nature herbal medicine ,or food, long term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, induced "yin excessive syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome" including weaken immunity and painful case of GERD,... according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory. Adding one slice of ginger will do the trick of neutralization.

Hypertension of male Wistar rats induced by the nitric oxide synthase inhibitor [N-nitro-L-arginine-methyl-ester (L-NAME); 20 mg/kg per day, orally, for 2 weeks], fed with green tea extract exhibited a strong effect in reduced hypertension (119 ± 1 mmHg) and higher renal sympathetic nerve activity (161 ± 12 spikes/s) than the control group (97 ± 2 spikes/s).
Green tea oral administration also showed a significant decreased in hypertensive parameter by ameliorated.arterial baroreceptor function and vascular and systemic oxidative stress.

Furthermore, in a total of 20 Otsuka Long-Evans Tokushima Fatty (OLETF) rats at 13 weeks old with matabolic syndrome randomized into a saline treated group (OLETF; n = 10) and a group treated with decaffeinated-GTE (25 mg/kg/day) (GTE-OLETF; n = 10), group fed with decaffeinated-GTE significantly reduced BP (OLETF vs. GTE-OLETF; 130 ± 7 vs. 121 ± 3 mmHg, p = 0.01) in compared control fed with saline.

The study also suggested that fed mice with green tea also showed an anti hypertensive effect in reduced vascular reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation and NADPH in generation of ROS, as well as improving endothelium (cell lines the interior surface of blood vessels and lymphatic vessels)and lymphatic vessels dependent relaxation.

Dr. Ihm SH, the lead author said," (green tea extract) improved endothelial dysfunction and IR, and eventually lowered BP".

Taking together, there is no doubt that green tea processes a significant effect in reduced risk and treatment of hypertension through reduced oxidative stress and improved vascular relaxation as well as decreased  metabolic syndrome in exaggerated hypertension.

Food Therapy: Excessive Coffee and Coffee Caffeine Intake in Risk of Acute Diuresis?

By Kyle J. Norton

Coffee intake may have a diuretic effect in increased urinary secretion, a recent study by a renowned institute suggested

Coffee, a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roasted bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

In an observation study of 10 healthy adults (eight males and two females; age: 27 ± 5 years, weight: 89.5 ± 14.8 kg, height: 1.75 ± 0.08 m, and body mass index: 29.1 ± 4.4 kg m-2) ingested either 200 mL of water (W), or coffee with low caffeine (3 mg kg-1, LCAF), or coffee with high caffeine (6 mg/ kg, HCAF) on three respective separate occasions, researchers found that group injected with high caffeine coffee with  (6 mg kgHCAF)demonstrated a greater diuresis during the 3-h period in compared to groups treated with W (356 ± 53 mL) and LCAF.

Furthermore, volume of urinary secretion of the injection of coffee with high caffeine groups  HCAF  was  425 mmol in compared to groups injected with W of 249 mmol) and LCAF of 177 mmol.

Dr.Seal AD1, the lead author siad, " caffeine intake of 6 mg/kg in the form of coffee can induce an acute diuretic effect, while 3 mg/kg do not disturb fluid balance in healthy casual coffee drinking adults at rest".

Contrast to the general belief, coffee consumption does not significantly reduce the fluid balance. According to the University of Birmingham, intake of coffee moderately may have similar hydrating qualities to water, when consumed in moderation.

Additionally, in the review of literature by searching the Medline database of articles published in the medical and scientific literature for the period of January 1966-March 2002, Dr. Maughan RJ, the lead author said, " acute ingestion of caffeine in large doses (at least 250-300 mg, equivalent to the amount found in 2-3 cups of coffee or 5-8 cups of tea) results in a short-term stimulation of urine output in individuals who have been deprived of caffeine for a period of days or weeks".

Interestingly, in a counterbalanced cross-over design, 50 male coffee drinkers (habitually consuming 3-6 cups per day) participated in two trials, each lasting three consecutive days, with controlled physical activity, food and fluid intake, participants also consumed either 4×200 mL of coffee containing 4 mg/kg caffeine (C) or water (W), researchers filed the following results
1. Intake of coffee during this period showed no significant changes in total body water (TBW) with no differences between trials.
2. Volume urinary secretion showed no difference in the period of examination and between 2 groups.
3. No change of nude body mass measurement (BM) in the period and between 2 groups.

Dr. Seal AD, the lead author said, " (there were) no significant differences across a wide range of haematological and urinary markers of hydration status between trials".

The implication of this result insisted that consumption of caffeine-containing beverages as part of a normal lifestyle do not lead to fluid loss in excess of the volume or poor hydration status other than people with deprived of caffeine for a period of days or weeks.

Taking tighter, the contradictory results regarded to coffee and coffee caffeine intake  in increased urinary volume secretion may require more illustrations from a large sample sizes and mutli centers studies before the claim can be made either ways.

Food Therapy: Maternal Coffee Intake > 4 Cups/Day in Risk of Miscarriage?

By Kyle J. Norton

Risk of miscarry is increased substantially in excessive coffee drinkers during pregnancy, an Asian study suggested

Coffee, one of most popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roasted bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

Miscarriage is the expulsion of a fetus from the womb between the 12th and 28th weeks of gestation.

In a case-controlled study conducted in Milan of 561 (72%) cases of spontaneous abortion and 877 (57%) controls, coffee drinking during the first trimester of the index pregnancy with healthy women who gave birth at term (> 37 weeks gestation) to healthy infants as control,  researchers reported that  the risk of miscarry is classified as follow
1. Coffee intake of 1, 2 or 3, and 4 or more cups of coffee per day, are associated to increased risk of 1.2, 1.8 and 4.0, respectively in compared to non drinkers.
2. The risk of pregnancy loss also is associated to the duration in years of coffee drinking. The estimated multivariate odds ratios of spontaneous abortion were 1.1 in comparison to non-coffee intake group.

Further more, in the evaluated effect of caffeine in influence of miscarriage researchers at the Boston University School of Public Health, conducted a prospective cohort study included 5132 Danish women planning pregnancy, enrolled from 2007 to 2010, after carefully assessed the returned beverage consumption on questionnaires, researcher found that a significantly miscarried risk is 1.62 higher in women consumed more that 300 mg/day of caffeine per day, in compared to 1.09 in women who consumes <100 mg/day. Specifically, women with daily intake of caffeine of
1. <100 mg/day showed a materially associated with SAB risk of 1.09
2. 100-199mg/day showed a materially associated with SAB risk of 0,89
3. 200-299mg/day showed a materially associated with SAB risk of 1.33

Other, in prospective cohort study included 15,590 pregnancies from 11,072 women with no history of SAB in the Nurses' Health Study II (1991-2009) with beverage intake assessed every 4 years using a validated questionnaire in case pregnancies lost spontaneously at <20 weeks gestation, total coffee intake had a positive, linear association with SAB.

In compared to non pre-pregnancy coffee intake, risk of SAB increased by 20% for women consuming ≥4 servings/day.

More importantly, Dr. Gaskins AJ, the lead author said, "Pre-pregnancy coffee consumption at levels ≥4 servings/day is associated with increased risk of SAB, particularly at weeks 8-19".

Taking together, there is no doubt that coffee may contribute to a relative risk of miscarry for women consuming more than 4 cup per day. Women who are pregnant between 12 to 28 weeks of gestation with excessive coffee intake habit are recommended to consult with their doctors.

Alternative Therapy: Yoga in Improved Physical and Psychological Aspects in Alzheimer's disease and AD Caregivers

By Kyle J. Norton (Scholar, Master of Nutrients, All right reserved)

Yoga used in combination with compassion meditation may have a positive impact in improved quality of life, attention, vitality,... in patients with Alzheimer's disease, a recent study suggested.

Yoga, the ancient technique practice for harmonized external and internal body well being, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement and gesture..... has been well known for people in Western world and some parts in Asia due to health benefits reported by various respectable institutes' research and supported by health advocates.

In a total of 46 volunteers randomly allocated to two groups, the yoga and compassion meditation program group (n = 25), with program lasted 8 weeks, comprised three yoga and meditation practices per week, with each session lasting 1 h and 15 min and the control group (CG), researchers, after assessed other co founders, found that yoga attendees expressed statistically significant improvements (P < 0.05) on quality of life, attention, vitality and self-compassion scores  in compared to control.

Additionally, in the examined feasibility of older adults with Alzheimer's disease (AD)-type dementia in 8 weeks of the Sit 'N' Fit Chair Yoga Program, researchers indicated that all participants showed a steady and progressive improvement over the course of program in 4 weeks, 8 weeks, and 1 month period.

Due to small size of this sample, Dr, McCaffrey R, the led researchers said, "Further study, using a larger sample and including a control group, is needed to fully determine the effect of the Sit 'N' Fit Chair Yoga Program on older adults with moderate to severe AD".

More importantly, in the concern of familial caregivers of patients of Alzheimer's disease in reduced quality of life and increased stress levels, researchers conducted a study of 46 volunteers randomly assigned to participate in a stress-reduction program for a 2-month period (yoga and compassion meditation program-YCMP group) (n = 25), at the end, familial caregivers attended the program group exhibited a reduction of the stress, anxiety, and depression levels, as well as a reduction in the concentration of salivary cortisol.

Taking altogether, Yoga, the integrated form of exercise not only improved physical and psychological aspects in patients with moderate and severe AD, but also reduced stress, anxiety and depression of familial caregiver in AD patients.

Food Therapy: Coffee, A Potent and Functional Food in Reduced Risk of Endometrial Cancer

By Kyle J. Norton

In take of caffeinated coffee may have a reduced risk and treatment of Endometrial cancer, an Asian joint study supposed.

Coffee, becoming a popular and social beverage all over the world, particular in the West, is a drink made from roast bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

Endometrial cancer is a medical condition characterized by cell growth disorderly and uncontrollably in the endometriosis. In the later stage, the cancer can spread to distant parts of tissues or organs.

In the review of published data of a total 1,534,039 participants from 13 published articles added in this meta-analysis, researchers found that reduced risk of endometrial cancers incidence is associated to coffee intake to patients never treated with any forms hormone therapies and either overweight or obese.

The relative odd ratio in these group of people were 0.66 and 0.77, respectively,  correlated to decaffeinate and caffeine coffee intake.

In fact, the risk of endometrial cancer deceased by 5% for every additional cup of coffee consumed.

In compared to decaffeinate coffee, caffeinated coffee showed a stronger in attenuated risk of 7% instead of 4% in decaffeinated intake,

The study also addressed that caffeine found in coffee may have a potential in enhanced coffee effects in ameliorated endometrial cancer expression. Risk of cancer is reduced by 4% for every 100mg caffeine intake per day.

In a 26 years follow-up study of 67,470 female participants aged 34 to 59 in 1980 of the Nurses' Health Study (NHS), returned questionnaires by the participants indicated that
1. Women drinking less than 4 cups of coffee per day were not associated with endometrial cancer risk.
2. Women drinking more than 4 cups coffee per day displayed a 25% decreased risk of endometrial cancer in compared to women who drank fewer that 1 cup per day.

Dr. Je Y, the lead author said, "For decaffeinated coffee consumption, a suggestive inverse association was found among women who consumed 2 or more cups per day versus <1 cup/mo."

Interestingly, the menopause women, the primary analyses included 45,696 women and 427 incident endometrial cancer cases, diagnosed over a total of 342,927 person-years of follow-up, suggested that
1. No association of endometrial cancer risk in coffee consumption in compared to non-daily drinkers (none or <1 cup/day),
2. Women who drank ≥4 cups/day have a relative odd ration of were 0.86. 0.63, for total coffee with 0.89 for caffeinated coffee, and 0.51 (95% CI 0.25, 1.03) for decaf coffee.
3. In obese women,  compared to control group (none or <1 cup/day), women who drank ≥2 cups/day had a relative odd ratio of 0.72 for total coffee, 0.66 for caffeinated coffee. and 0.67 decaffeinated coffee drinkers.

Taking together, intake of coffee is associated to reduced risk of endometrial cancer in healthy and menopause women regardless to weight mass.
