Herbal Therapy: Chaste Tree Berry, a Valuable Chemotherapeutic Agent for Treatment of Cancers

Kyle J. Norton.
In herbal medicine, symptoms of the diseases can only be eased gradually, depending to stages of the treatment which directly address to the cause of the disease.

Chaste tree berry is found to exhibit a significant anti cancer activity, a recent study by renowned study advised.

Chaste tree berry is a species of Vitex agnus-castus, genus Vitex, belonging to the family Lamiaceae, native to the Mediterranean region, used in herbal medicine for thousands of year as anaphrodisiac herb and considered as Queen herb in treating menstrual problems and discomforts.

Cancer is a class of diseases characterized by cells growing and multiplying disordered and uncontrollable way in our body. In the late stage, cancer cell may travel away from originated site
to infect other tissues and organs.

According to the Tianjin Institute for Biomedicinal Research, in the evaluated the apoptosis-inducing effect of chaste tree berry, using observation under light microscope, flow cytometric analysis and agarose gel electrophoresis, vitexicarpin, a flavonoid found in chaste tree berry significantly inhibited  proliferation of human cancer cells lines A2780(human ovarian carcinoma), HCT-15(human, colon, colorectal adenocarcinoma), HT-1080(fibrosarcoma cell line) and K562(Human chronic myeloid leukemia cells), depending to the concentration.

Dr. Wang HY the lead researcher in the study said, "Vitexicarpin induces apoptosis....  via mitochondria(in regulated cell metabolism)-controlled apoptotic pathway".

In support of the above analysis, the crude extract prepared with ethanol from dried ripened Vitex agnus-castus fruits exerted a strong cytotoxicic effects against cancer cell lines of human uterine cervical canal fibroblast (HCF), human embryo fibroblast (HE-21), ovarian cancer (MCF-7), cervical carcinoma (SKG-3a), breast carcinoma (SKOV-3), gastric signet ring carcinoma (KATO-III), colon carcinoma (COLO 201), and small cell lung carcinoma (Lu-134-A-H) cells.

The inhibition of the extract is attributed to the effect on cell death through apoptosis and increased intracellular oxidation in the tumor cells.

Other researchers suggested that the cytotoxic effects.of Chaste tree berry may be involved various aspects, including the JNK (opotosis) pathway. as indicated in the new native lignan VB6 study.

Taking together, there is no doubt, that chaste tree berry may be considered as a valuable chemotherapeutic agent for treatment of various types of cancer, depending to further evaluation.

Food Therapy: Green Tea, The Best Anti Metabolic Syndrome Whole Food Medicine

Kyle J. Norton

Green tea may be served as functional food for reduced risk and treatment of metabolic syndrome, a renowned institute study suggested

Metabolic Syndrome is a group of risk factors used to calculate the incidence of early onset of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

Green tea, a precious drink processes numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and Western world. However, as yin in nature herbal medicine ,or food, long term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, induced "yin excessive syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome" including weaken immunity and painful case of GERD,... according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory. Adding a slice of ginger will do the trick.

In a total of 35 obese participants with metabolic syndrome randomly assigned to receive one of the following for 8 weeks: green tea (4 cups per day), control (4 cups water per day), or green tea extract (2 capsules and 4 cups water per day), blood samples collected from green tea and green tea extract treated groups showed a significantly increased plasma antioxidant capacity (1.5 to 2.3 μmol/L and 1.2 to 2.5 μmol/L, respectively in compared to control group.

The study also found that the efficacy of green tea in ameliorated early progression of metabolic syndrome is attributed to the improved expression of serum antioxidant enzymes (glutathione peroxidase, glutathione, catalase) and plasma antioxidant capacity in inhibited free radicals in exhibition of pro inflammatory cytokins.

Furthermore, in the total of 55 obese men and women recruited, injection of 280 and 360 g GTRB provided daily totals of 123.2 and 158.4 mg caffeine, and 188.3 and 242.1 mg of epigallocatechin gallate significantly reduced expression of metabolic syndrome in attenuated weigh gain, high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, triglycerides, and glucose concentrations.

More importantly, the study also found that administration of green tea also reduced levels of blood pressure in obese subjects but can not maintain the weigh loss after study.

Other researchers in the investigation of decaffeinated green tea extract (GTE) and voluntary running exercise (Ex) alone or in combination against obesity and metabolic syndrome in high fat (HF) fed C57BL/6J mice, insisted that combination of green tea injection and exercise treatment reduced final body mass (27.1% decrease) and total visceral fat mass (36.6% decrease), levels of fasting blood glucose (17% decrease), plasma insulin (65% decrease), and insulin resistance (65% decrease) compared to HF-fed mice.

Taking together, green tea may be one of best candidates used for prevention of onset and treatment of metabolic syndrome in  adult population, but long term injection of large amount may induced liver and kidney toxicity as shown in previous articles.

Herbal Therapy: Chaste tree berry, The Best Whole Herb Medicine Exhibits Anti-Nociceptive in PMS

By Kyle J. Norton

The use of plants for healing purposes has been predated long before the existence of  modern medicine. Herbal plants have formed a fundamental source for conventional medicine in discovery of single ingredient medication, including aspirin (from willow bark), quinine (from cinchona bark), and morphine (from the opium poppy)......

Premenstrual syndrome is a faulty function of the ovaries related to the women's menstrual cycle, it effects a women's physical and emotional state, and sometimes interferes with daily activities as a result of hormone fluctuation.
Anti nociceptive effect is the term used to indicate the process in blocking the detection of a painful stimulation by sensory neurons.

Chaste tree berry may have a potential effect in reduced pain associated to symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, a renowned institute study suggested.

In an acetic-acid-induced writhing and metoclopramide-dihydrochloride-induced hyperprolactinemia mice study, mice treated with Chaste tree berry factions showed a significantly effective in expression of anti-nociceptive and anti-hyperprolactinemia activities.

The study also found that the fraction extracted from the herb also exerted anti-nociceptive activity in a dose-dependent manner (10-50 mg/kg body wt., i.g.).

Dr. Hu Y, the lead researcher in the study said, "Our results indicate that the presence of flavonoids such as Casticin in this plant may be responsible for the (anti-nociceptive and anti-hyperprolactinemia) activity effects. Casticin has potent analgesic and anti-hyperprolactinaemia properties, is likely to be one of the active components of Fructus Viticis, and may have a role in treating PMS (premenstrual syndrome)".

Further study in support of above differentiation also insisted that the 80% ethanol extract isolated from the herbal medicine showed the highest anti-nociceptive activity in acetic acid-induced writhing test in ICR mice in comparison with other factions. The study also indicated that the anti-nociceptive activity is mediate through inhibition of proinflammatory activity rather than through opioid receptors.

The evaluation of petroleum ether fraction (PEF) from the aqueous ethanol extract of Chaste tree berry at doses of 12, 24, and 48 mg/kg body weight, in nociceptive mouse models induced by intraperitoneal acetic acid and sub-plantar formalin injections and on thermal nociception in the hot-plate test, produced significant dose-related inhibitions on chemical nociception, probably due to partially mediated by its anti-inflammatory activity.

Taking together, the anti-nociceptive effect of Chaste tree berry should be beneficiary in reduced symptoms and treatment of women with premenstrual syndrome and improved quality of social life.
Large amount intake of herbal medicine can be prescribed by related field specialist, including Chaste tree berry.

Herbal Therapy: Green Tea in Reduced Risk of Hyperglycemia and Early Onset of Type 2 Diabetes

By Kyle J.

Green with a ton of phytochemicals has been found to process variuos health benefits reported by large numbers of research and study. However, long term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, inducing "yin excessive syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome"according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory. It is recommended to add a slice of ginger in your drink for a purpose of neutralization.

Recently study by renowned institute postulated that regular green tea intake may be associated to reduced risk of developed  hyperglycemia in healthy individual and prevented early onset of diabetes in people with hyperglycemia.

According to the Third Military Medical University, regular consumption of green tea or green tea extract improved insulin sensitivity and glycaemic control in populations with diabetics.

In the review of literature found in data base of PUBMED, The Cochrane Library, EMBASE, ISI Web of Knowledge, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database and Chinese Scientific Journals Fulltext of 17 trials comprising a total of 1133 subjects suggested that green tea consumption significantly reduced the fasting glucose and hemoglobin A1c (Hb A1c) concentrations by -0.09 mmol/L and -0.30%, respectively.

In the trials with high Jadad score studies, green tea significantly reduced fasting insulin concentrations -1.16 μIU/mL in compared to non green tea drinker group.

Other, in the mice study to evalaute green tea drink (T2 and T3) prepared by adding catechins and epigallocatechin gallate, major constituents isolated from green tea (EGCG) @ 550 mg/500 mL against non drinker group acted as control (T1),  mice fed with T2 and T3 expressed a significant reduced cholesterol and LDL levels and serum glucose and insulin levels with no difference in all functional drink groups but control.

Dr. Ahmad RS, the lead author said, "In contrast to lipid profile, experimental drink containing EGCG reduced the trait better than catechins based functional drink".

Furthermore, the compared diabetic effects of 3 selected tea water extracts (TWE) and tea pomace extracts (TPE) and by on rat intestinal α-glucosidase activity in vitro as well as hypoglycemic effects in vivo, insisted that in male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats fed with tea extracts improved levels of blood glucose level at 30 min after oral intake (0.5 g/kg body wt) in compared to the control in sucrose-loaded SD rat, probably through activation of antioxidants properties in free radical scavenging.

Indeed, tea pomace extract in the study exerted a significantly inhibition of intestinal α-glucosidase, in delayed glucose absorption resulting in suppressing postprandial hyperglycemia.

No doubtfully, green tea processed bioactives may be used as potentially nutraceutical products in prevent the risk of hyperglycemia in healthy people and early onset of in people with prediabetes.

Food Therapy: Coffee and Coffee Caffeine, A Potent Mediator of Sex Hormones?

By Kyle J. Norton

In compared to herbal medicine, food therapy even takes longer, sometimes more than six months to ease the symptoms, depending to stages of the treatment which directly address to the cause of disease.

Coffee, a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roasted bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

Sex hormones are a class of hormones, affecting sexual development or reproduction. Steroid-binding globulin(SSBG), is a sex hormone, having a direct effect on androgen and estrogen.

A recent study suggested that coffee may have a direct effect in influence the production of  sex hormone estrogen and testosterone depending to gender difference.

In a 8-week parallel-arm randomized controlled trial with Healthy adults (n = 42) recruited from the Boston community, including regular coffee consumers, nonsmokers, and overweight, randomized to five 6-ounce cups of caffeinated or decaffeinated instant coffee or water per day, at 4 weeks, researchers surprisingly found that
1. Decaffeinated coffee drinking was associated with a borderline significantly increased levels of SHBG in women, but not in men.
2. At week 4, decaffeinated coffee decreased total and free testosterone and caffeinated coffee decreased only total testosterone in women.
3. Contrasted to women participants, men consumption of caffeinated coffee displayed a significantly increased total testosterone and decreased total and free estradiol hormones.
4. The study also indicated that caffeinated coffee consumption do not exert any effect on SHBG in either men or women.

But conflicted to the healthy young adult, coffee and coffee caffeine showed an elevated effect as a mediator of sex hormone-binding globulin in both androgen and estrogen in type 2 diabetic patients, particularly in women.

Additionally, according to the cross-sectional study of 2377 nondiabetic pre- and postmenopausal women from the E3N cohort study in a multivariate adjusted model, intake of more than 3 cup of coffee daily coffee and caffeine ≥265 mg/day were associated with an increased SHBG level distribution (<46.3 nmol/L), in compared to no risk association of decaffeinated coffee subgroup.

Further more, the prevention of low level of SHBG of both caffeinated coffee and caffeine, may demonstrate a potential and positive effect in reduced risk of T2DM..

More importantly, in the examine a study during a median follow-up of 10 years of 359 postmenopausal women with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes matched with 359 control subjects by age, race, duration of follow-up, and time of blood draw, coffee and caffeine were associated to increased levels of fee and total testosterone among postmenopausal women.

The finding evidences suggested that coffee and caffeine has a extreme effect in exhibition of sex hormone estrogen and testosterone through lower level of SHBG in menopause women and prevented onset of type 2 diabetes.
Decaffeinated coffee decreased total and free testosterone through significantly increased levels of SHBG in women. And caffeinated coffee displayed a significantly increased total testosterone and decreased total and free estradiol in men.

Alternative Therapy: Yoga in Reduced Symptoms of All Aspects of Patients with Multiple Sclerosis

By Kyle J. Norton

Yoga therapy is found to associate to reduced physical and mental disability and improved quality of life in patients with moderate multiple sclerosis, a recent study suggested.

Multiple sclerosis is chronic and progressive condition involving damage to the sheaths of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.

Yoga, the accident technique practice for harmonized external and internal body well being, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement and gesture..... has been well known for people in Western world and some parts in Asia due to health benefits reported by various respectable institutes' research and supported by health advocates.

In a single-group design with repeated measurements at baseline, postintervention, and 8-week follow-up, patients with multiple sclerosis showed a hugh improvement in SF-36 MCS(Short Form Health Status Survey Mental Component Summary), MFIS(Modified Fatigue Impact Scale), BLCS(Bladder Control Scale), Perceived Deficits Questionnaire (PDQ), Mental Health Inventory (MHI) and Multiple Sclerosis Walking Scale (MSWS-12) and (Time 25 feet walking)T25FW,........ in followup examination compared to baseline.

The study also indicated that a strong effect in improvement of quality of life in patient attending yoga class, through out the study period without incurring any side effects.

According to the Oregon State University, mind-body therapies such as yoga practice of yoga may be a safe and effective way of managing symptoms of MS, including fatigue, imbalance, spasticity, chronic pain, cognitive impairment, bladder and bowel dysfunction, visual and speech impairments, depression, sensory disturbance, and mobility impairment.....

Dr. Rogers KA, the lead author also suggested that yoga may be used as an alternative treatment in management of symptoms of declining physical, emotional, and psychological symptoms for individuals with MS.

Furthermore, in an open arm, pre-post study design assessed the outcome measures at base line and after 21 days of integrated Yoga intervention with preparatory yogic loosening and breathing practices, with Nadishuddi pranayama (alternate nostril breathing), moola bandha (anal lock), kapalbhati (rapid nostril breathing) and deep relaxation technique given for 2h per day, after treatment, participants group showed a strong performance as  indicated in the scores on post void residual urine (62.34%, p<0.05), parturition frequency checklist (25%, p<0.05), incontinence impact questionnaire-7 (32.77%, p<0.05) and uro-genital distress inventory-6 (26.33%, p<0.05).

The study also suggested that yoga intervention therapy may be used as an adjunct to standard care for treatment in multiple sclerosis patients with neurogenic bladder dysfunction without side effects.

Food Therapy: Coffee Caffeine Withdrawal Symptoms, Is It True?

By Kyle J. Norton

In compared to herbal medicine, food therapy even takes longer  to ease symptoms, depending to stage of the treatment which directly address to the cause of disease.

Abruptively abstained caffeine intake may cause some withdrawal symptoms in regular and daily  coffee caffeine intakers, the American University study suggested.
Coffee, second to tea, is a popular and social beverage all over the world, particular in the West,  made from roasted bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

Coffee withdrawal symptoms is a set of the unpleasant physical condition caused by ceasing intake of additive caffeine for long term coffee lovers.

In a study of caffeine consumers (N=213) completed the CWSQ after 16h of caffeine abstinence, researchers at the above institute found that general withdrawal symptoms in participants included (1) Fatigue/drowsiness; (2) Low alertness/difficulty concentrating; (3) Mood disturbances; (4) Low sociability/motivation to work; (5) Nausea/upset stomach; (6) Flu-like feelings; and (7) Headache.

Regular and daily coffee intake group showed a significant and greater effect in symptoms of fatigue/drowsiness, low alertness/difficulty concentrating, mood disturbances, and headache in compared to group of non coffee caffeine drinkers.

Other, in the study of genetic effect, related to caffeine content of a beverage on caffeine withdrawal, suggested that withdrawal symptoms may be exaggerated in people who believe that certain genes may have a great influence in increased caffeine withdrawal and people with psychological belief that consumed caffeine leads to a reduction in withdrawal symptoms when no caffeine is consumed.

According to the returned questionnaire from participants  24 hours after caffeine abstinence, then given a cup of decaffeinated coffee, half the participants were told that their coffee was caffeinated participants displayed a strong belief of a greater reduction in withdrawal symptoms than those told it was decaffeinated. And genetic testing demonstrated a result information produced no difference in reported withdrawal symptoms.

In support to the above analysis, the study conducted by the University of Sydney, School of Psychology, using caffeine as a model to test the effect of expectancy on withdrawal symptoms, specifically whether the belief that one has ingested caffeine is sufficient to reduce caffeine withdrawal symptoms and cravings in abstinent coffee drinkers by using the same method as in above study, found that a similar result of greater reduction in the factors of cravings, fatigue, lack of alertness and flu-like feelings of the CWSQ, than those in the Told Decaf condition.

The finding evidences indicated that genetic and psychological and personal belief have a great affect in caffeine withdrawal symptoms, especially cravings, when no caffeine was consumed.
