Food Therapy: Coffee, the Best Function Food for Reduced Serum Uric Acid Level

By Kyle J. Norton

People who turn to alternative medicine for treatment of disease in avoidance of adverse effects induced by conventional medicine should be patient. In compared to herbal medicine; food therapy, sometimes even takes longer than 3 months to ease symptoms, depending to stages of the treatment which directly address to the cause of disease.

Good News for coffee lovers, intake of coffee is associated to ameliorated level of uric acid, a marker of gout incidence, a renowned institute study suggested.

But intake foods with high amount of purines may cause an excess of uric acid in your blood.

According to the observation of data from 14,758 participants ages >/=20 years in the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1988-1994), decreased serum uric acid level is associated to increased coffee intake.
Serum uric acid level was significant lower with coffee intake of 4 to 5 and >/=6 cups daily in compared to non drinkers.

The study also indicated that serum uric acid was not effected by total caffeine from coffee and other beverages.

Additionally, researchers in the review of data base of MEDLINE, EMBASE, the Cochrane library, and KoreaMed for all articles published before January 2015, 9 studies published between 1999 and 2014, containing a total of 175,310 subjects, demonstrated that coffee has a significantly lowering effect on serum UA.

And Amount of coffee required to lower serum UA is different in gender. Women are required to consumse more cups of coffee (4-6 cups/day) in compared to their male counterpart (1-3 cups/day) to exhibited same effects

Significantly, incidence of gout was even reduced linearly in participants with intake of 1 cup/day or more with no different in both genders.

Promisingly, in a total of 11.662 men and women aged 49-76 years, excluding those with medication for gout and hyperuricemia, use of diuretic drugs, and medical care for cancer or chronic kidney disease, daily consumption of coffee has a significantly inverse associations with serum UA concentrations in men.

But in compared to women participants, male participants expressed a statistically significant elevation of inverse association between coffee and serum UA levels.

Taking together, intake of coffee is associated to reduced level of serum uric acid in the blood depending to numbers of cup intake per day.

Food Therapy, High Coffee Intake and Calcium Fortified Foods in Risk of Osteoporosis (OP)

By Kyle J. Norton

In compared to herbal medicine, food therapy even takes longer to ease symptoms, depending to the stages of the treatment which directly address to the cause of disease.

Epidemiological studies do not agree that coffee and coffee caffeine may have an increased risk of bone loss, inducing osteoporosis in healthy adults and menopause women.

Coffee, becoming a popular and social beverage all over the world, particular in the West, is a drink made from roast bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

In a longitudinal population-based Swedish Mammography Cohort, included 61,433 women born in 1914-1948, with followed up from 1987 through 2008. returned questionnaires by participants showed insignificant effects of coffee consumption in correlated to bone loss inducing fracture of any type to 14,738 women , and 3,871 had a hip fracture.

According to the reported, high coffee intake (≥4 cups daily) was associated with a 2%-4% lower bone density, the risk of osteoporosis had a relative risk ratio of 1.28 in compared to a low intake (<1 cup daily) group.
Dr. Hallström H, the lead author said, "high coffeeconsumption was associated with a small reduction in bone density that did not translate into an increased risk of fracture".

Further more, the a cohort of 31,527 Swedish women aged 40-76 years at baseline in 1988, at the follow-up of 10.3 years, osteoporotic fractures is found in 3,279 cases proposed that risk of high coffee in take((>330 mg/day) showed a moderated relative risk ratio of increased risk of fracture of 1.20 in compared to low coffee consumption(<200 mg/day).

More impotantly, low calcium intake (<700 mg/day) also is found to associate to increased risk of fracture with both a high caffeine intake and coffee consumption.

According to the found evidences, National Food Administration, the institute conducted the study opinionated that people drinking more than 4 cups of coffee equivalence to 330 mg may be at risk of fracture and osteoporosis, moderately.

Interestingly, in a 980 postmenopausal women aged 50 to 98 years (mean age, 72.7 years) participated between 1988 and 1991 in determinated the risk association to lifetime intake of caffeinated coffee, in cup-years, to bone mineral density (BMD) of the hip and spine in postmenopausal women, long term coffee intake expressed a profound effect with statistically significant graded association with caffeinated coffee and decreasing BMD at both the hip and spine.

But this result was revered for those women, drinking at least one glass of milk per day during most of their adult lives.

The found evidence, suggested that high amount intake of coffee and caffeine may have a negative impact in increased moderated risk of osteoporosis but intake of calcium supplement or calcium fortified milk or products may ease the concerns.

Food Therapy: Coffee, A linear Association to Reduced Risk and Progression of Parkinson's Disease

By Kyle J. Norton

In compared to herbal medicine, food therapy even takes longer  to ease symptoms, depending to stage of the treatment which directly addresses to the cause of disease.

Intake of coffee caffeine regularly are associated to a significantly attenuated risk of neurodegenerative conditions, particular in the onset of Parkinson's diseases, a recent study suggested.

Parkinson's disease is neuro degenerative disease caused by deficiency of the dopamine and.degeneration of the basal ganglia of the brain, affecting muscular normal function.

Coffee, becoming a popular and social beverage all over the world, particular in the West, is a drink made from roast bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

According to the Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, in compared population comprised 47,351 men and 88,565 women free of Parkinson's disease, stroke, or cancer at baseline, caffeine intake is associated to reduced risk and progression of PD, in compared the top and bottom one-fifth men participants. No effect is found for decaffeinate coffee intake regardless to numbers of cup consumed.

Interestingly, among women, numbers of caffeinated coffee intake daily have a strong implication in attenuated risk of PD linearly, in compared to lowest intake of moderated intake groups.

Further more, a case-control study conducted in western Washington State in 1992-2000. Incident PD cases (n = 210) and controls (n  = 347) with frequency matched on gender and age identified from enrollees of the Group Health Cooperative health maintenance organization, returned questionnaires by participants indicated, consumption of 2 cups/day showed a strong expression in reduced risk of PD.

More importantly, in the review of twenty-six studies included: 7 cohort, 2 nested case-control, 16 case-control, and 1 cross-sectional study, the  total relative odd ratio for the association between caffeine intake in low to moderate groups and PD was 0.75.

But, in cohort studies, reduced risk of PD significantly decreased if only women participants were considered.

Researchers, at above study revealed that PD risk is associated to a linear relation between levels of caffeine exposure of relative odd ratio of 0.76, per 300 mg caffeine intake.

Taking together, there is no doubt that risk of PD has an extremely inverse association to caffeine intake, particular in moderated drinkers.

The use of plants for healing purposes has been predated long before the existence of  modern medicine. Herbal plants have formed a fundamental source for conventional medicine in discovery of single ingredient medication, including aspirin (from willow bark), quinine (from cinchona bark), and morphine (from the opium poppy)......

Believe or not, Chaste tree berry is shown to process a significant anti prostate cancer activity, a study of a renowned University proposed.

Chaste tree berry is a species of Vitex agnus-castus, genus Vitex, belonging to the family Lamiaceae, native to the Mediterranean region, used in herbal medicine for thousands of year as anaphrodisiac herb and considered as Queen herb in treating menstrual problems and discomforts.

Prostate cancer is a condition in which the cells of prostate has become cancerous. Most prostate cancers are slow growing and enlarged prostate and prostate cancer may be detected during the Physical (rectum) exams.

According to the University of Basel, extracts of Vitex agnus-castus fruits (VACF) inhibited human prostate epithelial cell lines (BPH-1, LNCaP, PC-3) in different stages of androgen responsiveness, through its antiproliferative activity in induced apoptosis and potential cytotoxicity.

Dr. Weisskopf M, the lead author said, "The extract inhibited proliferation of all three cell lines in a concentration-dependent manner with IC (50) values below 10 microg/mL after treatment for 48 h. Cell cycle analysis and DNA fragmentation assays suggest that part of the cells were undergoing apoptosis" and "

Furthermore, the extract may be useful for the prevention and/or treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Other study in proposal of five herbal supplements, designated FB, FM, PP, HF and FBL101, containing different combinations of various natural herbs such as licorice, black cohosh, Dong Quai, false unicorn and vitex berry root extracts, found that the five herbal supplements inhibited PC3 tumor growth by 53%, 75%, 80%, 81% and 87%, respectively without altering plasma testosterone levels relative to the untreated control.

Supplement of vitex berry root extracts significantly reduced VEGF levels, a product produced by cancer cells in large quantities, in mediation of angiogenesis through blocking the forming of new blood vessels in PC3 and CWR22R tumors,

There is no doubt that Chaste tree berry and its supplement may be used as preventive and therapeutic agents in reduced risk and treatment of prostate cancer. But intake of large amount should only be given by herbalist to prevent toxicity.

Herbal Therapy: Green Tea, Reduced risk of Early onset and Progression of Cognitive Impairment

By Kyle J. Norton

Green tea injection is associated to reduced risk of age-related cognitive decline, a recent study postulated.

Cognitive impairment is a condition of decline of memory and thinking skills due to aging considered as an early sign of neuro degenerative diseases.

Green tea, a precious drink processes numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and Western world. However, as yin in nature herbal medicine ,or food, long term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, induced "yin excessive syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome" including weaken immunity and painful case of GERD,... according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory. Adding a piece of ginger will solve the problem.

In a total of 12 elderly nursing home residents with cognitive dysfunction, participants who drink green tea powder 2 g/day for 3 months showed a significantly improved cognitive performance and reduced the progression of cognitive dysfunctionindicated by Mini-Mental State Examination Japanese version (MMSE-J) score.

Other study (Japanese residents aged >60 years from Nakajima, Japan (the Nakajima Project) of 723 participants with normal cognitive function at a baseline survey (2007-2008), the 490 completed the follow up survey in 2011-2013, suggested that incidence of dementia and cognitive impairment are lower among individuals who consumed green tea 1-6 days per week compared with individuals who did not consume green tea at all.

Additionally, according to the double-blind, randomized controlled study of 39 nursing home residents with cognitive dysfunction (four men, 29 women) divided into two group either with
consumption of 2 g/day of green tea powder (containing 220.2 mg of catechins) or placebo powder (containing 0.0 mg of catechins), green tea treated group showed a significantly reduced cognitive dysfunction in 3 months follow up in compared to placebo.

The efficacy of green tea in decreased progression of cognitive impairment in the short term may be attributed to ameliorated oxidative stress and levels of low-density lipoprotein.

Taking together, Green tea may process a potential in reduced risk of early onset and progression of cognitive decline in aging population, but long term and large amount injection should be taken with care.

Food Therapy: Beet, the Potent Anti Platelet Aggregation Whole Food

By Kyle J. Norton
In compared to herbal medicine; food therapy even takes longer to ease symptoms, depending to stage of the treatment which directly address to the cause of the disease.

Platelet aggregation is natural reaction of wound healing process of blood clotting in damage and injure of our body, to prevent infection and inflammation.

Beet, best known as the beetroot or garden beet and belonging to the amaranth family, is a perennial plant with leafy stems growing to 1–2 m tall.

Beet may process a significant effect in improved blood circulation through anti platelet aggregation  activity, a recent and renowned study suggested

According to the Barts & the London School of Medicine and Dentistry, dietary rich of nitrate vegetable or fruit, such as beet showed to exhibited vascular function in promotion of blood vessel and blood circulation function, thus reducing risk CVD.

In healthy volunteers, ingestion of a dietary nitrate load (beetroot juice 500 mL), approximately 3 hours after, correlated with peak increases in plasma nitrite concentration showed a significant effect in attenuated platelet aggregation in response to collagen and adenosine diphosphate (ADP), in cell energy metabolism. And decreased plasma nitrite, may block the decrease in blood pressure and abolished the inhibitory effects on platelet aggregation.

This findings suggested that regular drinking of dietary nitrate from food sources is necessary for maintenance of a healthy heart through decreased platelet aggregation and reduced blood pressure.

In 2 randomised crossover studies each in 24 (12 of each sex) healthy subjects with oral administrated dietary nitrate (250 ml beetroot juice) or potassium nitrate capsules (KNO3, 8 mmol) vs placebo control on platelet reactivity, group treated with nitrate component showed a strong inhibition of platelet aggregation.

The study also demonstrated that inorganic nitrate ingestion, whether via the diet or through supplementation, may have a gender preference in decreased platelet reactivity in healthy males but not females counterpart.

Dr. Velmurugan S, the lead author said, " dietary nitrate (may be benefit) as an adjunct to current antiplatelet therapies to prevent atherothrombotic complications".

According to the review of the National Heart and Lung Institute, in vitro and in vivo, dietary nitrite exhibited cGMP in mediated the levels of platelet aggregation through expression of nitric oxide actions, and in a model of thromboembolic radiolabeled platelet aggregation, injection of dietary nitrate or supplement showed a significantly inhibited platelet function in eNOS(-/-) mice.

Collectively,  beet with high amount of dietary nitrate may be used as functional food combined conventional treatment in reduced risk of platelet aggregation in induction of CVD.

It is my advised that people who are taking anti platelet aggregation medicine should consult with their doctors before applying large amount beet juice or juice with high concentration of nitrate.

Herbal Therapy: Green tea, The best Beverage for Lower Coronary Artery Disease Risk

By Kyle J. Norton

People who turn to alternative medicine for treatment of disease in avoidance of adverse effects induced by conventional medicine should be patient. In compared to herbal medicine, food therapy even takes longer to ease symptoms, depending to stage of the treatment which directly address to the cause of disease.

Recent study conducted by a respectable institute suggested that green tea may have a potential effect in reduced risk and treatment of coronary artery disease.

Coronary artery disease is a condition of narrowing coronary arteries, caused by hardening arterial wall, cholesterol building up in the arteries, leading to blockage of the blood flow in the arteries.

Adding a slice of ginger will do the trick of neutralization.

According to the review of literature of a study of 22 healthy volunteers, injection of green tea 7 cups/day exhibited anti cholesterol effects through modifying the low-density lipoprotein (MDA-LDL) concentrations and decreasing plasma C-reactive protein and interleukin (IL)-6 concentrations involving inflammatory expression.

Green tea consumption of less of 1 cup a day in 725 patients undergoing coronary angiography, is found to associate to lower risk of myocardial infarction (MI) in compared to CVD patients without MI and patients without CAD.

Dr. Ohmori R, the lead author said," Green tea consumption was found to be inversely associated with MI in Japanese patients" and " The protective effect of green tea against atherosclerosis is more likely to be because of the inhibitory effect of LDL oxidation than because of anti-inflammatory effect.".

Additionally, Japanese population with green tea drinking habit, showed a significantly reduced risk of a decreased incidence of coronary artery disease (CAD), due to the presence of abundant polyphenolic antioxidants.

In a group of comprised 203 patients who underwent coronary angiography (109 patients with significant coronary stenosis and 94 patients without), coronary artery disease (CAD) is associated inversely in regular green tea drinking group.

The study showed that green tea intake per day was an independent predictor for CVD based on a multivariate logistic regression analysis. but  not a predictor of cardiovascular diseases based on the Cox proportional hazard model.

Continuously, in researching the data of PUBMED and EMBASE for studies conducted from 1966 through November 2009 filed the following results:
1. 5 studies on green tea. indicated the lower relative risk is depended significantly between the highest green tea consumption and reduced risk of CVD.
2. The risk of CVD is reduced by 10% for every additional cup of green tea intake.

Taking together, green tea may be used as a functional food of healthy adultd with a higher risk CVD.
However, long term and large amount green tea consumption should be taken with care to prevent toxicity.
