Herbal Therapy: Andrographis Paniculata, The Best Gastroprotective Whole Herb Medicine

The use of plants for healing purposes has been predated long before the existence of  modern medicine. Herbal plants have formed a fundamental source for conventional medicine in discovery of single ingredient medication, including aspirin (from willow bark), quinine (from cinchona bark), and morphine (from the opium poppy)......

Andrographis paniculata showed to improve the gastric tone and prevent gastric dysfunction through the protection of its antioxidants, the renowned institute suggested.

Andrographis paniculata is also known as Andrographis is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka. It has been used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic in treating the common cold, flu, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia, ....

Gastroprotective effect is a condition involved enhances the function of digestive system against the harmful organisms in induced chronic indigestion.

In the study of  gastric ulcer induced by ethanol, aspirin, pylorus ligation and cold restraint stress models, rats treated with rats pretreated with HAEAP (100,200,500mg/kg b. wt for 30 days) of andrographis paniculata expressed a significant ulcer reduction, in dose dependent manner, according to the Bharathi Women's College.

Dr. Panneerselvam S, the lead author said, "The ulcer preventing effect of HAEAP may partly be due to its regulating effect on H(+)K(+)ATPase activity and /or mucin preserving effects" and "The flavonoids present in the HAEAP might be responsible for the gastroprotective action probably by maintaining the antioxidants and thiol status in the gastrointestinal tract".

In support of the above differentiation, the review of a period of 1 year from 2014-2015, using semi-structured questionnaires from different traditional Bengali people having knowledge on medicinal plants, out of 49 plants under 46 genera belonging to 33 families, andrographis paniculata is one of the most prominent plants used among the people of Southern Assam for treating digestive system disorders (DSD).

Furthermore, seed ethyl acetate, acetone and methanol extracts of Andrographis paniculata (Burm.f.) Wall. ex Nees has drawn a lots of scientists attention due to the limit success of chemical anthelmintics, a group of antiparasitic drugs (levamisole, flubendazole, and thiabendazole) in reduced gastrointestinal diseases.

 In animal controls,  ED(50), an methanol extract of A. paniculata at dose of 2.90 mg/ml, and in larval development assay at ED(50) of dose 4.26 mg/ml, showed a significant effects against sheep parasite, Haemonchus contortus.

Taking together, there is  no doubt that andrographis paniculata consisted a strong gastroprotective effect against the activities of harmful organisms, including parasites and may be used as functional food in improving digestive functions.

Hormone Therapy: Progesterone in Reduced Risk of Pre Term Birth

Women with history of pre mature birth may be benefits from injection of hormone progesterone to reverse the incidence of recurrence, a renowned institute study suggested,

Progesterone is a steroid hormone, produced by the women body to regulate part of the menstrual cycle and supporting the gestation and the process of sperm in egg fertilization.

Preterm birth is a term for any infant born less than 37 weeks gestational age.

According to the joint study lead by the Universitätsklinikum Heidelberg, progesterone has a profound effect in protect the cervix in strengthen the layers of the uterine wall, reduced the myometrial contractility and inhibited the production of pro inflammatory cytokins.

In the review of literature of database from PubMed published from 1956 to August 2014, women with previous preterm birth incidience received vaginal progesterone daily (200 mg capsule or 90 mg containing gel) at from 16+0 to 36+0 weeksm showed a significant improvement in reduced risk of preterm incidence and infant mortality.

The same term of progesterone injected to women with short cervix also benefits in attenuated risk of preterm birth <28, <33, and <35 weeks of gestation.

Unfortunately, progesterone therapy showed inconclusive evidences as maintenance therapy after arrest of preterm labor.

Dr. Kuon RJ, the lead author said, " The vaginal administration of progesterone is well-tolerated by the patients and has only minor maternal side effects".

Other researchers in the finding of pre term incidience suggested that a short cervix may be a clinically silent sonographic in the midtrimester in induced pre term accident. Injection of  vaginal progesterone showed a huge improvement in reduced rate of preterm delivery by 45% as well as the rate of neonatal morbidity.

According to the study, the hormone therapy substantially decrease rate of spontaneous preterm birth with a short cervix in both women with and without a prior history of preterm birth in compared to conventional medicine 17α-Hydroxyprogesterone caproate.

In support to the above analysis, a reviewed analysis of 36 randomised controlled trials (8523 women and 12,515 infants) indicated that progesterone treatment for women with a past history of spontaneous preterm birth showed a statistically significant reduction in the risk of perinatal mortality in compared to placebo, particular in the risk of preterm birth less than 34 weeks' gestation.

In compared to placebo, the study also found that progesterone therapy addressed a significant reduction in the risk of infant birthweight less than 2500 g in other risk factors not related to history and short cervix.

Taking altogether, application of hormone progesterone showed a increadible result in reduced risk of preterm birth between 28  - 34 weeks of gestation in both women with or without previous history of preterm  incidence.

Food therapy: Intake of Coffee Caffeine > 300mg/day Increased Risk of Delay Conception

Caffeine found in coffee consumption may increase risk of delayed conception depending to amount of caffeine intake per day, a renowned European institute study suggested.

Infertility is defined as inability of a couple to conceive after 12 months of unprotected sexual intercourse or can not carry the pregnancy to full term. It effects over 5 millions couple alone in the U. S. and many times more in the world.

Coffee, becoming a popular and social beverage all over the world, particular in the West, is a drink made from roast bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

In a collected retrospectively on time of unprotected intercourse for the first pregnancy of a randomly selected sample of 3,187 women aged 25-44 years from five European countries (Denmark, Germany, Italy, Poland, and Spain) between August 1991 and February 1993, women drinking more than 500 mg of caffeine per day,  showed significantly increased odds ratio (OR) of 1.45, in risk of delay first pregnancy, in compared to women who consumed less than the maximum amounts.

The study also mentioned that, fertile women who are smokers and consumes over 500mg caffeine per day are associated higher related risk of 1.56 in compared to non smokers with same amounts of caffeine intake,

In first pregnancy, maximum or over maximum amounts of caffeine intake showed an increased time of waiting by 11%..

Other, in the examine of the retrospective study of 1,430 non-contracepting, parous women interviewed between July 1989 and June 1990 at Fishkill, New York, and Burlington, Vermont. and 2,501 pregnancies since 1980. Women's reported consumption of caffeinated beverage during the first month of pregnancy, range of daily caffeine intake of none, 1-150, 151-300, and > or = 301 mg with women who did not smoke and who consumed no caffeine used as a reference group, we found that women who drank none to 300 mg of caffeine showed a same relative risk of  in delay of conception among nonsmokers in compared to reference group.

Women, who do not smoke, intake more than 300 mg caffeine, showed a significantly increased delay conception odd ratio of 2,65.

Dr. Stanton CK, the lead author said, "Fecundability was reduced among nonsmokers who consumed more than 300 mg caffeine daily (fecundability ratio = 0.74, 95% CI 0.59-0.92)".

Interestingly, even though smoking reduced the ratio of delay conception, but caffeine consumption showed no effects on fecundability among women who smoked.

In support to the above differentiation, the Danish study also indicated that
nonsmoking women with a caffeine intake less than 300 mg/day in compared to nonsmoking women who consumed 300-700 mg/day of caffeine had a fecundability odds ratio (FR) of 0.88 against FR of 0.63 in higher consumption group.

The finding evidences suggested that women who want to get pregnant should reduce intake of caffeine to less than 300mg per day.

A renowned institue study suggested that Chaste tree berry may be a functional food for treatment of female sex hormone deficiency.

Chaste tree berry is a species of Vitex agnus-castus, genus Vitex, belonging to the family Lamiaceae, native to the Mediterranean region, used in herbal medicine for thousands of year as anaphrodisiac herb and considered as Queen herb in treating menstrual problems and discomforts.

According to a joint study lead by the Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences, oral administrated Vitex agnus-castus fruit improved hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis in regulation of the reproductive system and immune system in free radical scavenger activities involved natural aging, in a d-galactose induced aging model in female mice.

Mice injected with d-galactose (500 mg/kg/d for 45 days) in seventy-two female NMRI mice (48 3-month-old normal mice and 24 18-24-month-old mice), weighing 30-35 g randomly divided into six groups: control, Vitex, d-galactose, Vitex + d-galactose, Aging, and Vitex + Aging, groups treated with Chaste tree berry or combination with herbal medicine showed a strong effects in increased the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), follicle-stimulating hormone, and luteinizing hormone.

Dr. Ahangarpour A, the lead researcher said, " Vitex can be suitable for some aging problems such as oxidative stress, female sex hormone deficiency, and an atrophic endometrium".

Further more, the testing of flavonoid glycosides, orientin and apigenin 3, 8-di-C-glycosides and iridoid compound, aucubin isolated from the ethanolic extract of Vitex agnus-castus fruits, also showed a significant increase in plasma progesterone and total estrogens levels and reduction in luteinizing and plasma prolactin hormones in two dose levels 0.6 and 1.2 g kg(-1) per body weight (b.w.).

Additionally, the study also found that the ethanolic extract induced significant increase in the uterine weight which showed an interaction of sexual hormone of progesterone and estrogen of ovariectomized rats at two dose levels comparable to that of control group.

Dr. Dr Jillian Stansbury, not the author of the above studies said,"Consumption of Vitex fruits by female chimpanzees as part of their natural diets has been found to dramatically increase progesterone levels in the urine, indicating an overall progesteronic effect.34 One hypothesis is that reduced LH allows follicle-stimulating hormone to dominate and can lead to decreased estrogen and testosterone and a relative increase in progesterone".

Taking together, in women, Chaste Tree Berry may have a strong effect in influence sex hormones
production in expression of antioxidant, anti aging and normalized hormone activities.

Food Therapy: Coffee Adverse effect in Increased Risk of Iron Deficient Anemia

Coffee, a popular and social beverage all over the world, particular in the West, is a drink made from roast bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

Dietary iron is an important mineral for our body to make oxygen-carrying proteins hemoglobin for red blood cells and myoglobin for muscle functioning as well as wide variety of metabolic processes, including oxygen and electron transport, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) synthesis......

Coffee may interfere digestive track function in absorbed nonheme iron from dietary sources, a respectable study suggested.

According to the lead author of the study, a cup of coffee intake showed to reduce iron absorption from a hamburger meal by 39%, in compared to 64% of tea, a potent inhibitor of iron absorption.

Even more interestingly, ingested a cup of drip coffee or instant coffee with a meal composed of semipurified ingredients, rate of iron absorption was reduced from 5.88% to 1.64 and 0.97%, respectively

There is an algorithm established by the the University of Göteborg, to calculate the amount of iron absorption without injection of dietary enhancers and inhibitors, using basal dose absorption of 40% in compared to different amounts of dietary factors known to influence iron absorption by measuring iron absorption from 24 complete meals with mean iron absorption in 31 subjects served a varied whole diet labeled with heme- and nonheme-iron tracers over a period of 5 days.

However, researchers of the study also said, "This algorithm has several applications. It can be used to predict iron absorption from various diets, to estimate the effects expected by dietary modification, and to translate physiologic into dietary iron requirements from different types of diets".

The findings suggested that coffee may have inhibited effect in reduced digestive system functioning in absorption of dietary iron. Therefore, people with iron deficient anemia should take only coffee with an extra portion of iron enhancers in their meal.

In skin tumor initiation with 390 nmol of 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene (DMBA) in 100 microl of acetone together with mouse skin tumor promotion with 3430 J/m(2) of ultraviolet light-B (UV-B), oral administration of 0.0025% and topical application of 390 nmol of betanin, the major chemical constituent isolated from beet root, revealed a strong protection in the mouse skin cancer model.

Beside skin cancer, betanin, a regularly consumed natural product colorant found abundance in beet root may also be effective chemopreventive agent in treating other types of cancer , such as lung and liver cancers.

Other in the validated sugar beet pectin/gelatin hydrogels, in vivo, conjunction with anti cancer chemodrug, doxorubicin, demonstrated a successfully suppressed growth of a solid tumor created by applied to skin of mouse melanoma B16F1 cells into nude mice. 

The findings reveal that beet, with high amounts of  nitrate may be used as therapeutic and functional food in attenuated risk and treatment of skin cancer alone or combined with other chemoagents.
