A #Combination of N-Acetyl Cysteine, Alpha-Lipoic Acid, and #Bromelain Ameliorate Endometrial Pain, Researchers Find

Endometriosis is a medical condition caused by the tissue of the endometrium that grows outside the uterus, leading to severe abnormal pain.

Most cases of endometriosis are found to involve the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and the tissue lining the pelvis.

Some researchers suggest the cause of endometriosis is a result of a layer of endometriosis lining on the inside of the uterus being expelled, instead, some of the endometriosis tissues grow somewhere in the body in the last stage menstrual cycle (menstruation).

Endometriosis also reacts to hormone signals of the monthly menstrual cycle, by building up tissue, breaking it, and eliminating it, according to the stage of the menstrual period. Since they grow somewhere other than in the uterus when they break, the period blood has no way to exit, causing blood to attach to the organs or lining of the abdomen, resulting in scars or adhesion as well as weakening the normal function of organs.

According to statistics, endometriosis affects
a) About 20% of reproductive-age women with endometriosis present but without symptoms.

b) About 55% of women who have developed the new onset of severe menstrual cramps.

c) About 25% of women with sub-fertility (less fertile than a normal couple)

Endometriosis can vary in appearance. It may be clear or white, reddish, brown or blue-black, and cysts. The condition can be classified according to the stage of severity:
* Minimal stage:
The top surface is few in number. Commonly they are found in the inside wall of the uterus, ligaments, and ovary.

* Mild stage:
Deeper implants, greater numbers are presented. Commonly found in the same area as a minimal stage.

* Moderate stage:
In many implants, endometrial cysts are present, affecting ovary function, causing scar tissues and adhesion is also present.

* Severe stage:
Intensive peritoneal implants, large endometriomas present, and dense adhesion.
Each woman experiences differently from endometriosis. Some women may have extensive endometrial tissues in their body but feel little or no pain, while other women may only be in the early stage of endometriosis but have excessive pain.

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.

With an aim to find a potential ingredient for the treatment of endometriosis-associated pelvic pain, researchers evaluated the antioxidant activity of a preparation containing N-acetyl cysteine, alpha lipoic acid, and bromelain.

The multicenter, open-label, non-comparative clinical trial included a sample of 398 patients with a mean age of 34.6 ± 7.2 years with endometriosis-associated pelvic pain.

According to the results of a combination of N-acetyl cysteine, alpha-lipoic acid, and bromelain treatment after 6 months, in comparison of 92.7% of the patients with pain intensity > 4 on the visual analog scale (VAS) at the baseline, the percentage was decreased to 87.2% (p = 0.074) at 3 months of treatment.

Also compared to the baseline, the percentage decreased even more at 82.7% (p < 0.05) at the 6 months of treatment.

More importantly, the use of medicine for pain relief was also reduced upon the application of the combination, according to the results of the experiment.

Dr. Lete I, the lead scientist said in the final report, "Women with endometriosis who wish to become pregnant and are treated with a preparation containing N-acetyl cysteine, alpha lipoic acid, and bromelain experienced a significant improvement in endometriosis-associated pelvic pain and required lower intake of rescue analgesics".

Taken altogether, bromelain used alone or combined with other remedies may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of endometrial pain, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Inflammation is a natural immune response that protects our body against the invasion of stimuli and foreign pathogens.
During the acute phase of infection, the immune first line of defense activates the protein associated with the production of blood palettes to cover the wound and inflammatory cytokines to the site of injury with an aim to prevent and kill off harmful microorganisms.

However, the overproduction of inflammatory cytokines not only can induce fever, swelling, and pain in the affected area but also damage to the nearby cells and tissue, leading to the formation of scars.

Chronic inflammatory diseases are the class of conditions involved in low-grade inflammation that affects tissues or organs. Some researchers suggested that the immune system has evolved over thousands of years to kill off foreign invasive pathogens within a period of time, generally between 3 to 8 weeks. If the immune fails to do so, it will adapt to the new change, leading to chronic inflammation.

There are several factors that cause the onset of the conditions. Some scientists indicated untreated acute inflammation, such as an infection or injury and an autoimmune disorder involving the immune system mistakenly attacking healthy tissue are the most common causes of chronic inflammatory diseases.

Certain risk factors such as long-term exposure to irritants, such as industrial chemicals or polluted air, the increase in age, being obesity or obesity, low sex hormone production, sleep disorder, and diet.

According to the analysis of cultured endothelial cells, ArCC treatment suppressed monocyte adhesion to tumor necrosis factor-α-in atherosclerotic plaque formation by inhibiting endothelial adhesion molecules.

The action of ArCC against vascular inflammation was attributed to decreasing the expression of a protein associated with cytokine production.

In hyperlipidemic apolipoprotein E-deficient mice, administration of ArCC (150 or 300 mg/kg/day) showed a similar effect on the inhibition of aortic inflammatory cytokines, reduction of plaque formation accompanied by the lowering of the leukocyte infiltration.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, "The results suggest that the consumption of anthocyanin-rich red Chinese cabbage is closely correlated with lowering the risk of vascular inflammatory diseases".

Taken altogether, red Chinese cabbage processed abundantly with anthocyanin may be considered a dietary vegetable for the prevention and treatment of vascular inflammatory diseases, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Dr. Bandaru S. In finding a potent compound for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the potential influence of consistent dietary concentrations of indicaxanthin on LOVO1, CACO2, HT29, HCT116, and DLD1 cells.

According to the tested analysis, Indicaxanthin exerted a significant anti-proliferative activity in all cell lines but HT29 by inhibiting some methylation-silenced onco-suppressor genes.

In other words, Indicaxanthin normalized the gene expression associated with cancer cell suppression without affecting the function of basally hypermethylated such as SFRP1 and HPP1.


Interestingly, indicaxanthin increased the DNA Methyltransferases (DNMT) gene expression but decreased the activity involved in the promotion of various types of cancer, including colon cancer.


Most importantly, Indicaxanthin also increased the expression of genes involved in DNA demethylation associated with the activity of unwanted DNA methyltransferase-induced tumor progression.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "contribute to new knowledge in the field of phytochemicals and specifically suggest dietary indicaxanthin as a potential epigenetic agent to protect colon cells against tumoral alterations".


Taken together, indicaxanthin may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of colon cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Depression is a common and serious psychological illness, that affects the physical and mental functions of patients, including the ways patients feel, think, and act.

* Furthermore, XYS enhanced the levels of oxalic and stearic acids that significantly increased in depressed patients' plasma while valine and urea significantly decreased, as compared with healthy controls.

* XYS reversed these metabolite changes in terms of regulating dysfunctions in glyoxylate and dicarboxylate metabolism, fatty acid biosynthesis, valine, leucine, and isoleucine biosynthesis, and arginine and proline metabolism.

Taken altogether, angelica sinensis may be considered a remedy to treat depression, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
