#Herbal #Calendula in the Speeding Up #WoundHealing, Researchers Show

By Kyle J. Norton

Herbal Calendula may have a strong effect on speeding up wound healing, according to studies by a number of institutes.

Wound healing is a natural process of our body by restoring the function of the damaged or injured tissue through several stages.

Most importantly, the early stage of wound healing is also known as the acute phase of infection, which starts as soon as the immune system senses the tissue damage by stimulating the blood vessels to provide the damaged tissue with blood palette to cover the wound temporarily and activated the proteins associated with the production of inflammatory cytokines to the site of infection with an aim to kill off all micro invaders.

In most cases, the immune first line of defense can destroy the pathogens and speed up the recovery of the damage by inducing fiber tissue reconstruction, and new blood vessels.

However, overproduction of a proinflammatory cytokine in this phase may cause damage and death of nearby cells, leading to the formation of scars.

If the immune system can not kill off all the invaded pathogens within a set of times, normally in 3-8 weeks, it will adapt to the new change, leading to low-grade inflammation, a major cause of several chronic ailments, including diabetes, and heart diseases.

If the process of wound healing is disrupted, it may also lead to improper wound healing with complications, including inadequate scar formation, excessive scar formation, contracture formation, and an exaggeration of normal wound edge contraction forming deformities.

Calendula is also known as pot marigold, an annual or perennial herbaceous plant of about 12–20 species of the genus Calendula, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Southern Europe. It has been used in herbal medicine for spasmolytic, spasmogenic, and inflammatory effects and for the treatment of abdominal cramps, wound healing, skin diseases, colitis, constipation, etc.

Besides major chemical constituents of triterpenoids, flavonoids, coumarins, quinones, volatile oil, carotenoids, and amino acids, the herb also contains loliolide (calendin), calendulin, and n-paraffins.

Researchers on finding a natural ingredient for speeding up wound healing examined the effect of Calendula officinalis, an annual herb from the Mediterranean origin which is popularly used in wound healing and as an anti-inflammatory agent.

Injection of C. officinalis demonstrated significant anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activities in protecting the wound against infection.

Furthermore, C. officinalis also speed up the wound healing process by enhancing the angiogenic and fibroblastic properties.

The findings strongly suggested that herbal Calendula can act in a positive way on the inflammatory and proliferative phases of the healing process.

Moreover, in the evaluation of the effects of oral and topical application of Calendula officinalis flower extract on excision wounds made in rats, compared to the control of 51.1%, oral and topical application of Calendula showed a wound closure was 90.0%.

The extract treatment at a dose of 20 or 100 mg/kg b.wt reduced the period needed for re-epithelization to 14 and 13 days, respectively compared to 17.7 days in the control.

Additionally, the extract-treated group also exhibited a significant increase in the concentration of collagen. compared to untreated animals.

Interestingly, in a total of 36 rats and 90 embryonated eggs used to evaluate healing and angiogenic activities of extracts and fractions of Calendula, through the induction of skin wounds and the chorioallantoic membrane, respectively, researchers found that
* Injection of calendula extract exerted an angiogenic activity in speeding up wound healing in both experimental models.

* The efficacy was not attributed to the signal protein produced by cells that stimulate the formation of blood vessels, but to other unknown pro-angiogenic factors.

Taken altogether, herbal Calendula may be considered a functional remedy for speeding up wound healing with no side effects.

#Ashwagandha in Reducing the Risk of Chronic Generalized #Periodontitis, Researchers Find

By Kyle J. Norton

Gingivitis is a common and mild form of periodontal disease caused by inflammation of the gingiva, leading to symptoms of irritation, redness, and swelling of the gum that lines the base of the teeth.

Gingivitis dental plaques formed around the base of the teeth are sticky biofilms of bacteria associated with the interaction of the food intake and bacteria in the mouth. Over time, if untreated, the condition can lead to periodontitis and advanced periodontitis.

At this early stage, the bone and connective tissue that hold the teeth in place are not yet affected. The problems can be reversed by more frequent and proper brushing and flossing.

The most common cause of gingivitis is poor hygiene. Epidemiologically, risk factors that induce the onset of gingivitis are smoking or chewing tobacco. diabetes and long-term use of specific medications including oral contraceptives, steroids, anticonvulsants, and calcium channel blockers.

Some people under the treatment of chemotherapy may also experience symptoms of gingivitis.

Periodontitis is a severe stage of gingivitis that damages the soft tissue and destroys the bone that supports your teeth, leading to teeth loosening or tooth loss.

Periodontitis can be classified into
* Chronic periodontitis is caused by plaque buildup and involves the slow deterioration of the gums and bone and loss of teeth if not treated. The condition is a common condition that affects mostly adults.

* Aggressive periodontitis is found mostly in childhood or early adulthood. The condition is rare that causes rapid progression of bone and tooth loss if untreated.
* Necrotizing periodontal disease is a severe infection that causes the death of gum tissue, tooth ligaments, and supporting bone.

Ashwagandha, also known as Withania somnifera, is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean. The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered an anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

On finding a potent compound for the treatment of oral health, researchers examined the effects of WA on periodontitis.

In vitro, Herbal ashwagandha possessed a marked anti-inflammatory effect against the denaturation of proteins associated with losing the quaternary structure, tertiary structure, and secondary structure, probably through the herbal alkaloid and withanolide contents.

Furthermore, herbal ashwagandha also induced adaptogenic, immunomodulating, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory against the onset of periodontitis.

The enzymatic antioxidants such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase produced by the host are increased by the administration of WA against bacterial-induced inflammatory periodontitis.

Moreover, Ashwagandha supplementation also showed to process activity to act as an adjunct to scaling and root planing(SRP) in chronic periodontitis(CP) patients by inhibiting oxidative stress (OS) and increased levels of acute-phase proteins associated with gingival inflammation and periodontitis.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Changes in peripheral blood cellular and molecular components can be seen in patients with periodontitis, as periodontitis includes inflammatory changes of the periodontal tissues".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of periodontitis, pending the result of a larger sample size and multicenter study

#Herbal #Ashwagandha Processes Anti #LungCancer Activities in Vitro, Scientists Show

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of diseases caused by cell growth and multiplication disorderly and uncontrollably due to the alternation of the DNA.
After colonizing the entire tissues of the specific organ, the oversize tumor cell can travel a distance away from the originated site to invade other healthy tissues, via lymph or blood.

The most advanced stage of cancer may result in the death of the patient.

The lung is a vital organ located near the backbone on either side of the heart with major functions to inhale oxygen from the air to the bloodstream that nourishes the body cells and exhaling carbon dioxide from the bloodstream.

Other functions of the lung are to maintain the right levels of pH, filter out blood clots, and protect the heart against shock, infection, and speech.

Lung cancer is a condition of the abnormal growth of the cells in the lung's tissue. A most common form of primary lung cancers is derived from epithelial cells.

According to the statistics provided by the American Lung Cancer Association, lung cancer is the leading cancer killer in both men and women in the U.S. In 2018, 154,050 Americans died from lung cancer in 2018, accounting for approximately 25 percent of all cancer deaths.

The exact causes of lung cancer are unknown. However, passive smoking and tobacco smoking are 2 of the most common risk factors found in patients with the disease.

Other risk factors are
* Exposure to certain chemicals
The risk of lung cancer for people who inhale or expose to certain industrial chemicals such as radon gas, arsenic, chromium, and nickel,..in the workplace is substantially higher compared to non-exposures.

* Family history
The risk of lung cancer increased if one of the members of the direct family has lung cancer.

* Lung disease
The risk of lung cancer increases if you have or previously had certain types of lung disease

* Excessive drinking
According to the study by Freudenheim et al., R. Curtis Ellison MD suggested that alcohol intake of more than 2 drinks per day is associated with a small increased risk of lung cancer.

Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

With an aim to find a potent ingredient for the treatment of lung cancer, researchers examined the effects of Withaferin A (WA) a bioactive lactone, isolated from Withania somnifera on lung tumor cells both in vitro and in vivo.

According to the tested differentiation, WA entered a significant anti-lung cancer cell activity by -mediating cytotoxicity involved in reactive oxygen species (ROS) expression.

On NSCLC cell line A549 compared to non-carcinoma WI-38 and PBMC cell lines as controls, WA induced oxidative damage to NSCLC cells without affecting much of normal cells in a dose-dependent manner.

In a comparison of the anti-lung cancer effect among a chlorinated steroidal lactone (27-acetoxy-4β,6α-dihydroxy-5β-chloro-1-oxowitha-2,24-dienolide), a diepoxy withanolide (5β,6β,14α,15α-diepoxy-4β,27-dihydroxy-1-oxowitha-2,24-dienolide), and withaferin A, researchers found that all 3 compounds exhibited growth inhibition and cytotoxic activity against human lung cancer cell line (NCI-H460).

Withaferin A was found to have a most effective activity at GI(50)=0.18 μg/mL and LC(50)=0.45 μg/mL) compared to the other 2 chemical constituents.
Taken altogether, Ashwagandha processed abundantly bioactive compounds that may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of lung cancer, pending to the results of a large sample size and multicenter study.

#Antioxidant #Carotenoids Inhibit the Risk of #ProstateCancer, Researchers Suggest

By Kyle J. Norton

The prostate warped around the urethra is a gland of the male reproductive system found in front of the rectum and just below the bladder and responsible for making some of the semen that carries sperm.
Prostate cancer is a medical and chronic condition caused by cell growth irregularly in the prostate gland. Most cases of prostate cancer are slow-growing and enlarged prostate and prostate cancer may be detected during Physical (rectum) exams.

Most cases of prostate cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the prostate tissue before penetrating into deeper layers to induce colonization.

At the advanced stage, the prostate cancer cells can spread to distant parts of the body, leading to secondary metastasis.

Prostate cancer can be diagnosed by* Blood tests
* Digital Rectal Examination (DRE)
In DRE, your doctor inserts a lubricated, gloved finger into the rectum to feel the surface of the prostate gland to check for any abnormality of the prostate.

* Transrectal Ultrasound (TRUS)
Ultrasound allows your doctor to visualize and assess the size of your prostate and to check for any abnormality and surrounding area with an image taken from the test. In transrectal ultrasound, a probe is inserted into the rectum to emit ultrasonic impulses against the prostate.

* Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test
The test is to measure the levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA), a protein produced by the prostate. The high levels of PSA may be an indication of a higher risk of the presence of prostate cancer.

* Prostatic Acid Phosphatase (PAP) test
Prostatic acid phosphatase (PAP) is a test to measure the level of prostatic acid phosphatase, an enzyme produced by the prostate. The higher levels of PAP are an indication of the disease progression.

* Prostate biopsy
In a prostate biopsy, samples of the prostate are taken by a thin, tube-like instrument to examine under microscopy to review the stage of cancer.

According to the statistics, prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men particularly in older over 65, after skin cancer. in 2019, approximately 174,650 men in the US will be diagnosed with prostate cancer.

The average age of diagnosis is 66.

Carotenoids are a class of mainly yellow, orange, or red fat-soluble pigments, including lycopene and carotene, found abundantly in ripe tomatoes, pumpkins, carrots, corn, and daffodils.

In finding a potential compound for the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer, researchers examined the effect of carotenoid levels on the risk of high-grade prostate cancer.

The study included the measurement of plasma levels of carotenoids and genotyped 20 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in SOD1, SOD2, SOD3, XRCC1, and OGG1 in 559 men with non-metastatic prostate cancer undergoing radical prostatectomy.
According to the results from tested assays, the serum of circulated carotenoid levels was inversely associated with the risk of high-grade prostate cancer, with odds ratios (OR) of 0.34 compared to the highest versus lowest quartiles.

In chemical analysis, the relative odds ratio of α-carotene,β-carotene, lycopene, and total carotenoids.was 0.31, .55, 34, and 0.37 respectively.

In other words, all major phytochemicals found in carotenoids work synergistically to enhance the efficacy of carotenoids against the risk of high-grade prostate cancer.

Furthermore, the presence of the SNPs rs25489 in XRCC1, rs699473 in SOD3, and rs1052133 in OGG1 genotypes also was found to modify the activity of α-carotene, β-carotene, and lycopene, respectively.

Believe it or not, the high serum of lycopene was found among men with a Gleason score ≤ 3 + 4 and lower FGA (P = 0.04).

More precisely, the efficacy of carotenoids reduced the risk of prostate cancer, however, the risk of high-grade invasive prostate cancer are depending on the levels of lycopene.

Dr. Nordström T, the lead scientist said, "Higher lycopene level was associated with less genomic instability among men with the low-grade disease which is novel and supports the hypothesis that lycopene may inhibit the progression of prostate cancer early in its natural history".

Taken altogether, carotenoids may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of carotenoids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Antioxidant #Lycopene May Process Anti #Cancer #Angiogenesis Activities, Researchers Suggest

By Kyle J. Norton

Angiogenesis is a process involved in the migration, growth, and differentiation of endothelial cells, that stimulates the growth of new blood vessels from the existing vessel.
Cancer is a class of diseases associated with abnormal cell growth due to the alternation of DNA.

Most cases of cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of tissue. At the early stage, due to the small size of the tumor, most patients are asymptomatic. However, at the advanced stage, the oversize tumor can press on the nearby nerve cells and blood vessel, leading to bleeding and localized pain and symptoms accompanied by the general symptoms shared by other types of cancer, such as unintended weight loss.

Localized symptoms are totally depending on the types of cancer.

At this stage, cancer cells can also travel a distance away from the originated site to infect other healthy cells and tissue, causing a secondary metastasis.

Under normal conditions, angiogenesis is necessary for wound healing, tissues repairment in which the developing or healing tissues receive an adequate supply of nutrients.

In Cancer, angiogenesis induced the formation of new blood supply from the preexisting vasculature by false signaling in ensuring the tumor survives and propagates.

In other words, if we can cut off the energy supply to cancer which totally relyed on the formation of the new blood vessel for proliferation and expansion, we may cure those types of cancer.

Dr. Benouchan M, the lead scientist wrote, "Tumor angiogenesis plays an important role in tumor development, vascular invasion, and hematogenous metastasis. Thus, anti-angiogenic therapy directed against tumor ECs should, in principle, improve the efficacy of antitumor therapy by inducing little or no drug resistance".

Lycopene is a phytochemical in the class of carotenoids, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world's diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.

With an aim to find a potent compound that processes anti-angiogenetic activity against cancer proliferation and invasion, researchers examined the apo-10'-lycopenoic acid (ALA), a derivative of lycopene on the liver and lung cancer animal models.

In both Transwell and wound-healing models, application ALA in a dose-dependent manner was effective in inhibiting migration and invasion of liver and lung cancer cells.

Furthermore, ALA treatment suppressed the actin remodeling in orchestrating cancer cell motility and cancer cell membrane formation.

Moreover, the ALA also constrain the cancer proliferation, invasion by suppressing angiogenesis.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "ALA inhibits cancer cell motility and angiogenesis".

Dr. Zu K, the lead scientist in a joint study examined the effect of lycopene on tissue biomarkers in prostate cancers by analyzing the information obtained through questionnaires and ascertained total and lethal prostate cancer cases from 1986 through January 31, 2010, among 49898 male health professionals found that
* Higher lycopene intake was inversely associated with total prostate cancer and more strongly with lethal prostate cancer.

* Higher lycopene intake was associated with biomarkers in cancer indicative of less angiogenic potential.

In other words, higher lycopene intake reduced cancer proliferation by stimulating the formation of the new blood vessel.

Taken altogether, lycopene may be considered anti-angiogenetic supplements for the prevention and treatment of cancer through its anti-angiogenetic activity, pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#CruciferousVegetables In the Inhibition of #ChemicalCarcinogens that Cause the Onset of Cancers, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Cruciferous vegetables rich in phytochemicals may be the food for reduced risk and treatment of chemical carcinogens

According to the Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto, sulforaphane (SFN), the isothiocyanate (ITC) group of organosulfur compounds found in cruciferous vegetables expressed chemopreventive properties involved in detoxification processes of chemical carcinogens.

Dr. de Figueiredo SM, the lead author said, " In a dose-dependent manner, ITC inhibits the viability of human cancer cells, modifies epigenetic events that occur in cancer cells, and presents anti-inflammatory effect acting during the initial of uncontrolled cell proliferation."

Chemical carcinogens are types of cancer caused by chemical toxins in the induction of cellular and chromosome change, DNA damage, etc.

The chemoprotective activity of the vegetable is the result of the significant expression of the antioxidants in cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in cancer cells as well as acting as the post-initiation stages of carcinogenesis, as a 'suppressing' agent involving the ability to modulate the Nrf2 in reduced damage from oxidative damage.

In fact, besides use as a chemopreventive agent against chemical carcinogenesis, sulforaphane (SFN), the major chemical constituent of cruciferous vegetables also inhibited the drug-metabolizing enzymes that cause activation/neutralization of carcinogenic metabolites and protects normal healthy cells from environmental toxin-induced of cancers.

Furthermore, the phytochemical exhibited the molecular mechanisms responsible for the overall chemopreventive effects on selective cytotoxicity, in reduced oxidate stress, and free radicals produced by lipid peroxidation in cells.

In the study of tobacco smoke carcinogens-induced chemical tumors, cruciferous vegetable consumption has been shown to be inversely associated with the development of cancer. In animal experiments. the chemopreventive effects of isothiocyanates, another compound found in cruciferous vegetables, inhibited the metabolic activation of carcinogens by cytochrome P450s, enzymes with function in metabolized potentially toxic compounds.

Taking together, the intake of cruciferous vegetables has potential health benefits against environmental toxins in cancer development, but due to the small size of the sample, further studies are necessary to address its viability.

#Herbal #Calendula Inhibits the Excessive Meibomian Gland Secretion.That Causes #ChronicBlepharitis, Researchers Suggest

By Kyle J. Norton

Herbal Calendula may have a potential effect in reducing the risk and treatment of chronic blepharitis, some scientists suggested.
Blepharitis is a condition caused by the eye inflammation of the eyelids or parts of the eyelids as a result of the clogging of tiny oil glands located near the base of the eyelashes, affecting people of all ages.

Blepharitis can be classified into 2 types1. Acute blepharitis is referred to as eyelid infection by bacterial, viral, or parasitic pathogens.

2. Chronic blepharitis or lid inflammation is caused by staphylococcal, seborrheic, and meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) that lasts more than 3 months.

According to researchers, chronic blepharitis is difficult to treat due to persistently low-grade inflammation.

The most common causes of blepharitis are bacterial infection. However, the condition also can be caused by a skin condition, such as scalp dandruff or rosacea.

If you experience symptoms of itchiness, redness, flaking, and crusting of the eyelids, burning sensation, irritation, tearing, and red eyes, you may have acute blepharitis, please check with your doctor.

Untreated chronic blepharitis can lead to permanent alterations to the eyelid margin or vision loss from superficial keratopathy (abnormality of the cornea), corneal neovascularization, and ulceration.

Calendula is also known as pot marigold, annual or perennial herbaceous plants of about 12–20 species of genus Calendula, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Southern Europe.

The herb has been used in herbal medicine as spasmolytic, spasmogenic, and inflammatory effects and to treat abdominal cramps, wound healing, skin diseases, colitis, constipation, etc.

In the findings of the natural ingredient with potential for the treatment of chronic blepharitis without inducing any adverse effects, Dr. Prozornaia LP and Dr. Brzhevskiĭ VV.launched an investigation to examine the herbal Calendula anti-chronic blepharitis activity.

In a total of 110 patients aged from 3 to 42 years old were examined to estimate the efficacy of chronic blepharitis treatment, 50 patients are with chronic blepharitis and dry eye syndrome (DES), 28 are with DES due to computer vision syndrome and 32 are with isolated chronic blepharitis.

All patients received eyelid massage and a complex of hygienic procedures was performed using phytoproducts ("Geltec-Medika", Russia): blepharoshampoo, blepharolotion, blepharogel 1 and 2.

After all the procedures were finished, moist warm pads (with blepharolotion and calendula extraction) were applied to the eyelids of 25 patients.

In comparison to massage, moist warm pad treatment exerts a significant effect in the improved efficacy of background therapy in patients with meibomian gland hypofunction but an insignificant effect in patients with excessive meibomian gland secretion.

These results suggested that Herbal Calendula may be effective in the treatment of chronic blepharitis caused by meibomian gland hypofunction if it is used in conjunction with eyelid hygiene.
