Broccoli Protects the Kidney Cell Against Chemo Drug Adverse Effects

By Kyle J. Norton

Kidneys are 2 bean-shaped organs found in the left and right side in the retroperitoneal space in the body.

The function of kidneys is to filter blood and control fluids. They are the second detoxed organs besides the liver and skin.

Due to millions of tiny filters called nephrons in each kidney, people may not experience any kidney dysfunction symptoms at an early stage.

Kidney diseases are a class of medical conditions associated with reduced function of the kidney, in cases, complete loss of kidney function such as kidney failure.

Believe it or not, in the US, the leading causes of kidney failure and the end stage of chronic kidney diseases are diabetes and high blood pressure.

Chemotherapy is a drug treatment that kills cancer cells by inducing cytotoxicity. Most cases of chemotherapy have been found to causes severe side effects on the patient, including fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, bowel issues such as constipation or diarrhea, hair loss, mouth sores, skin and nail problems.

Chemo drugs have also been shown to induce nephrotoxicity, by increasing the production of ROS and inhibiting several antioxidant enzymes to orchestrating kidney oxidative stress injury.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belong to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color and the mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant on the continent of Europe.

On finding a potential plant that processes anti kidney toxicity induced by chemo-drugs, researchers examined the effects sulforaphane (SF), a natural constituent of cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, on Cisplatin (cis-diamminedichloroplatinum II, CIS) nephropathy.

In rodents, before treatment with FN, cisplatin therapy triggered marked activation of stress signaling pathways to promote cancer cell death in the kidney by increasing the DNA fragmentation, apoptotic proteins,

Furthermore, CIS also exhibited the terminal associated with attenuation of various prosurvival signaling pathways and increased the levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokines in the kidney.

In other words, the injection of CIS not only induced kidney injury but also caused damage to the death of the kidney cells, through several aforementioned mechanisms.

After the administration of SF,  all these effects were significantly attenuated by pretreatment of rodents with SFN.

Based on the evidence, researchers wrote, " SFN is able to prevent the CIS-induced renal injury by modulating these pathways, providing a novel approach for preventing this devastating complication of chemotherapy".

Taken altogether, the consequences of these results suggest that the broccoli process the potential anti-side effect of CIS in the induction of kidney toxicity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Tomato Juice Inhibits the Onset of Hyperlipidemia, Researchers Find

By Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal organ located in the upper right portion of the abdomen, beneath your diaphragm and above your stomach.

The liver not only plays a critical role to filter the blood coming from the intestine before passing them to other parts of the body but also protects our body against toxin by detoxifying chemicals and metabolizes drugs.

Cholesterol is a waxy substance produced by the liver. In a moderate amount, it helps to improve the gastrointestinal tract in food digestion, builds strong cell membranes, produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.

The healthy ratio of low-density lipoprotein (LDL)/high-density lipoprotein (HDL) is ant numbers that are less than 4.

Hyperlipidemia is a medical condition of abnormally high levels of cholesterol and fat in the bloodstream.

High blood cholesterol is the most common cause of hyperlipidemia. According to statistics provided by the CDC, more than 12% of adults age 20 and older are living with high blood cholesterol with a total cholesterol higher than 240 mg/dL. and more than 18% had high-density lipoprotein (HDL, or “good”) cholesterol levels less than 40 mg/dL.

In other words, hyperlipidemia has a high prevalent ratio that affects over 100 million Americans and the condition is increasing at an alarming rate due to overweight and obesity.

Believe it or not, only half of the people with high blood cholesterol benefits from taking the lowering blood cholesterol medicine.

People with hyperlipidemia are asymptomatic. However, if untreated, the condition can cause cholesterol build-up on the arterial wall, leading to narrowing the arteries inducing blockage that causes heart disease and stroke.

Tomato is red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belonging to family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of high blood cholesterol, researchers examined the effects of processed tomato juice from Kagome Ltd. (KOT) on hypolipidemic activity in hamsters with hyperlipidemia induced by a 0.2% cholesterol and 10% lard diet (i.e., high-cholesterol diet (HCD)).

The selected hammers were randomly divided into two groups for treatment: normal (n = 8), standard diet (control); and experimental (n = 32). Additionally, the experimental hammers were furtherly divided into four groups (n = 8 per group) received vehicle or KOT by oral gavage at 2787, 5573, or 13,934 mg/kg/day for six weeks, designated the HCD-1X, -2X and -5X groups HCD, respectively.

Based on the analysis, KOT supplementation in a dose-dependently showed a strong effect to decrease serum TC, TG, LDL-C levels, LDL-C/HDL-C ratio, hepatic TC and TG levels, and fecal TG level.

Collectively, researchers said, "Our study provides experiment-based evidence to support that KOT may be useful in treating or preventing the onset of hyperlipidemia".

Taken altogether,  processed tomato juice may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of hyperlipidemia, pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Cranberry Protects the Liver Against Inflammation

By Kyle J.

Additionally, the liver also inhibits oxidative stress by producing the antioxidant enzyme that counters the expression of free radicals in the body.

Inflammation is a natural response by the immune system to protect the body against the invasion of stimuli or foreign pathogens.

Acute inflammation is a short-term condition caused by tissue injury, leading to pain, redness, swelling, and heat to the affected area. depending on the size of the injury. Some patients with acute inflammation may also experience the symptom of loss of function.

In acute inflammation, the white blood cells on the first line of defense of the immune system after sensing the danger of an infection in the body through a message from the brain stimulate the production of platelets to cover the site of injury or damage and inflammatory cytokines to kill off all pathogens before they can cause harm to the body.

Most cases of infection are stopped at the acute phase. The wound or injury is slowly recovered.

Liver inflammation is a medical condition d with autoimmune hepatitis and hepatitis and medications, drugs, toxins, and alcohol.

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of liver diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers compared the effect of a polyphenol-rich cranberry extract (CBE) and high fat-fed obese C57BL/6J mice on hepatic inflammation.

0.8% CBE treatment for 10 weeks showed no change in body weight or visceral fat mass compared to high fat-fed control mice.

However, CBE exerted a significant decrease in plasma alanine aminotransferase (31%) associated with liver stress and histological severity of NAFLD by a 33% decrease in the area and a 29% decrease in lipid droplet size, compared to high fat-fed mice.

Hepatic protein levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha and C-C chemokine ligand 2, hepatic mRNA levels of toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4,) and nuclear factorκ B (NFκB), associated with the inflammation were also reduced by 28%, 19%,  63%, and 24% and respectively, following CBE supplementation.

Furthermore, the genes related to the inflammasome of the nucleotide-binding domain, leucine-rich-containing family, pyrin domain-containing-3 also were decreased by injection of CBE supplementation.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "CBE reduced... hepatic inflammation in high fat-fed obese C57BL/6J mice"

And "These effects appear to be related to mitigation of TLR4-NFκB related signaling"

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the treatment and management of liver inflammation, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids May Process Anti Chronic Diseases and Cardiovascular Disease (CVD Activity

By Kyle J. Norton

Chronic diseases are medical conditions that last more than 3 months depending on the type of diseases.

In other words, chronic diseases generally cannot be prevented or cured by medication, nor do they just disappear.

According to the statistics, chronic diseases affect millions of people worldwide, leading to the death of 35 million people in 2005, including many young people and those in middle age.
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a group of conditions associated with the heart and blood vessels.

Heart disease is a class of diseases associated with interruption of blood flow in the blood vessel or damage of the heart tissue, including coronary artery diseases (CAD) such as angina and myocardial infarction.

According to the statistics, heart disease is a leading cause of death in the US. Approximately 2000 people in the general population die of heart disease every day.

Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the most common type of heart disease, that kills over 370,000 people annually.

The causes of cardiovascular diseases are associated with the accumulation of plaques in the arteries, impeding the blood flow which carries the nutrients and oxygen to the heart, causing damage to the heart tissue and reduced function of the arteries.

In other words, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, weight, depression and family history associated with the early onset of plaques accumulated and impeding function of the arteries are the prevalent risk factors of cardiovascular diseases.

According to the statistic cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women in the US with 90% of women having one risk factor.

Believe it or not, women are 4 times more likely to die from heart disease than breast cancer and 2/3 of women are not aware of heart disease is such a risk for them, according to the Jean Hailes for Women Health in the article cardiovascular health.

Many people know that tobacco use is associated with an increased risk of bladder cancer, but most of them do not know that smoking is one of the leading causes of cardiovascular diseases.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of chronic diseases, researchers examined the
importance of the omega-6/omega-3 fatty acid ratio in patients with cardiovascular disease and other chronic diseases.

According to the results of the experiment, excessive amounts of omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and a very high omega-6/omega-3 ratio has been found to induce the pathogenesis of many diseases, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, and inflammatory and autoimmune disease.

Increased levels of omega-3 PUFA with the lower of omega-6 PUFA (a lower omega-6/omega-3 ratio), exerted the protective effects.

The ratio of omega-3 and omega-6 PUFA of 1/4 are associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases.

A ratio of 2.5/1 showed a strong activity in reducing rectal cell proliferation in patients with colorectal cancer.

Furthermore, the lower omega-6/omega-3 ratio was associated with a decreased risk of CVD in women with breast cancer.

Most importantly, a ratio of 2-3/1 suppressed inflammation in patients with rheumatoid arthritis and a ratio of 5/1 had a beneficial effect on patients with asthma, whereas a ratio of 10/1 had adverse consequences.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " it is quite possible that the therapeutic dose of omega-3 fatty acids will depend on the degree of severity of disease resulting from the genetic predisposition".

And " A lower ratio of omega-6/omega-3 fatty acids is more desirable in reducing the risk of many of the chronic diseases of high prevalence in Western societies, as well as in the developing countries".

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids together with low levels of omega-6 fatty acid may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases and CVD,  pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Phytochemical Tocopherols Process Anti-Inflammatory Property

By Kyle J. Norton

Anti-inflammatory activity is the use of a substance or treatment for the treatment of od inflammation or swelling.

Anti-inflammatory protein in the body displays anti-inflammatory properties against the risk of autoimmune diseases and immune pathologies such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis or organ rejection.

Inflammation is a natural and systematic response of the immune system in the protection of the body against infection caused by the invasion of stimuli and pathogens.

After sensing the bodily injury or damage, the white blood cells of the immune first line of defense stimulates the production of a blood clot to seal the would quickly and proinflammatory cytokine to the site of infection with an aim to kill off all microorganisms which may cause harm to our body.

In this acute phase of the battle, most of the time is won by the immune system. However, overexpression of the pro-inflammatory cytokines can lead to the death of nearby healthy cells and improper skin healing with the formation of scars.

In some cases, certain proteins with duo anti and proinflammatory function also can switch to pro-inflammatory cytokines depending on the severity of the infection.

Chronic inflammation is a medical condition that lasts longer than 8 weeks, caused by the inability of the immune system to kill off all the microorganisms that have successfully entered the body during the acute phase of infection.

Some researchers suggested that the evolution of the immune system is to kill off the foreign micro invaders within the time frames of 8 weeks. If not, the immune system will adapt to the change, leading to chronic low-grade inflammation, a major cause of many chronic illnesses, including diabetes.

In some instances, chronic inflammation can also be caused by the immune system that mistakenly attacks the bodily tissue.

Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, and seed or nut oils, etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of diseases associated with inflammation, researchers examined the effects of γ-tocopherol (γT), δ-tocopherol, and γ-tocotrienol antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

According to the tested analysis, γ-tocopherol (γT), δ-tocopherol, and γ-tocotrienol showed strong activity in scavenging reactive nitrogen species, inhibiting the enzymes associated with the mediation of the pro-inflammatory cytokines such as cyclooxygenase- and 5-lipoxygenase-catalyzed eicosanoids.

Furthermore, the phytochemicals also suppressed the proteins involving in proinflammatory signalings such as NF-κB and STAT3/6.

Moreover, the side-chain ω-oxidation involved in oxidative stress was also inhibited by the application.

In Vivo, long-chain carboxychromanols, especially 13'-carboxychromanols found in the phytochemicals exerted a strong anti-inflammatory activity in the study.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " in Vivo and Vitro, γT and tocotrienols may be useful against inflammation-associated diseases".

Taken altogether, tocopherols may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with acute and chronic inflammation, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Kale (Brassica Oleracea) Protects the Cell DNA Against Genotoxicity

By Kyle J. Norton

Genotoxicity is the activity of substances that can cause alternation of DNA of healthy cells to promote irregular cell growth. In other words, genotoxicity induces cancers.

Genotoxins are gene mutagens that have the property of genotoxicity, including radiation and chemical toxins.

Not all genotoxicity is mutagenicity, However, all mutagens are genotoxic.

Highly genotoxic chemicals include the known potent carcinogens benzo(a)pyrene, aflatoxin B1, N-nitroso compounds, and various alkylating agents that directly act on DNA, inducing breakage and cross-linking, and the formation of DNA adducts, abasic sites, oxidative damage, alkylation, and various other DNA lesions(4).

Interestingly, some genotoxins do not directly act on DNA but cause numerical chromosome aberrations during cell division(4).

Furthermore, certain chemicals used in pesticides, food additives, starches, shampoos, and fireproof and crease-proof fabrics may be considered as genotoxins as they also cause genetic mutations.

Moreover, automobile exhaust fumes and medicine used for their antibacterial activity and in chemotherapy(5), chemicals from occupational sources and tobacco may also induce mutations and cancer(6).

Genotoxic chemotherapy is a type of cancer treatment that uses one or more genotoxic drugs to induce the death of cancer cells, by promotes the genotoxins cytotoxic effects to cause DNA damage into cancer cells.

Kale is a species of Brassica Oleracea, belong to the family Brassicaceae, native to coastal southern and western Europe. Since kale's leave is highly nutritious and easy to grow with a range of long season from the middle of winter through the beginning of spring, it is cultivated as foods in most parts of Europe.

On finding a potential wholefood for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the genotoxic and antigenotoxic activity of kale juice (Brassica oleracea L. var. acephala D.C.) in an animal model,

Male Swiss mice selected for the study were divided into groups of 6 animals, which were treated with water, natural, or commercial Brassica oleraceae juices (kale), lutein (LT), beta-carotene (BC), methyl methanesulfonate (MS) or cyclophosphamide (CP).

According to the tested analysis, treatment with kale leaf juices alone did not exert marked genotoxic or clastogenic effects.

MMS or CP demonstration a strong DNA damage which was inhibited by the injection of kale juice.

Kale juices or carotenoids inhibited DNA damage induced by MMS or CP administered either pre- or posttreatment by 50 and 20%, respectively.

Additional differentiation also revealed that the most pronounced antigenotoxic activity were groups received juices, rather than carotenoids.

Based on the evidence, researchers said, "the synergy among constituents present in the food matrix may be more beneficial than the action of single compounds".

Taken altogether, kale juice may be considered a functional food for the prevention of cancer induced by genotoxins, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids Reduce the Risk Breast Cancer

By Kyle J. Norton

The woman breast is made up of specialized tissue that produces milk (glandular tissue) and fatty tissue. The size of the women's breasts is totally determined by the amount of fat.

Cancer is a class of diseases in which a group of cells growing and multiplying disorderly and uncontrollably in our body.

Breast cancer (malignant breast neoplasm) is a medical and chronic condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the breast tissue.

Most cases of breast cancer start either in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of milk ducts (Ductal carcinoma) or the lobules (Lobular carcinoma) that supply the ducts with milk.

There are also rare cases of breast cancer that start in other areas of the breast

The cause of breast cancer is the result of the alternation of DNA of the cells in the breast.

According to statistics, in 2010, over 250,000 new cases of breast cancer were expected to be diagnosed in women in the US alone and the risk of getting invasive breast cancer during the lifetime of a woman is 1/8.

The 5 years of the survival rate of localized breast cancer are closed to 100%.

Genetic preposition, one of the prevalent risk factor associated with the increased risk of breast cancer has been under intensifying study in scientists over the world over a few decades ago, suggested that women who carry the mutated genes BRCA1 and 2 have 60% most likely risk to develop breast cancer before the age of 70.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of cancer, researchers examined the increasing EPA and DHA relative to arachidonic acid effects on the risk of breast cancer.

According to the result of the analysis, the application ratio showed a reduction in pro-inflammatory lipid derivatives, inhibition of nuclear factor-κB-induced cytokine production, and decreased growth factor receptor signaling cell differentiation and proliferation beginning in membrane lipid rafts.

Furthermore, EPA and DHA supplementation also help to prevent or alleviate common health issues such as cardiac and cognitive dysfunction and chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy after a breast cancer diagnosis.

Moreover, omega-3 fatty acids also reduce the chemotherapy-associated loss of muscle mass and weight gain.

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids may be considered a functional food for the prevention of breast cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
