Kale Supplement, the Potential Treatment of Hypertension

By Kyle J. Norton

Hypertension or high blood pressure, a condition associated with the cluster of metabolic syndrome is a medical condition associated with abnormally high blood pressure.

Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood and changes constantly depending on activity. However, persistent hypertension due to poor management over time can lead to cardiovascular disease.

According to the statistics provided by the American Heart Association., nearly half of all adults in the United States are living with high blood pressure or 1 in 3 American are hypertensive.

Hypertension is the leading risk factors of heart disease and stroke in the US.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) including heart disease and stroke are a class of conditions associated with the dysfunction of the arteries and heart, affecting the heart functioning.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. Men are associated with 1/2 of the deaths due to heart disease in 2015 were in men, comapred to women.

Believe it or not, more than 63,000 Americans die from heart disease each year or 1 in every 4 deaths are caused by heart disease.

Most common prevalent factors associated with the hypertension onset are family history, aging, being male, being overweight or obese, ethnicity, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet and medical condition such as chronic kidney disease.

Excessive alcohol drinking is also one of the major causes besides obesity in elevating the syndrome onset.

Depending on the levels of blood pressure, most people with mild hypertension are assymptomatic. However, unmanaged high blood pressure can induce complication of heart attack or stroke, heart failure, weakened and narrowed blood vessels, metabolic syndrome and trouble with memory or understanding,

Conventionally, blood pressure medications have been found to prevent many deaths from heart disease and stroke over the past 30 years, however, long-term intake of such medications have caused many side effects such as damaging the kidney.

Some researchers suggested by making changes to lifestyle, maintaining ideal weight and diet with low salt, you could do just fine without the drugs.

Dr. L. J. Beilin wrote, "Lifestyle factors are critical determinants of blood pressure levels operating against a background of genetic susceptibility. Excess body fat is a predominant cause of hypertension with additive effects of dietary salt, alcohol, and physical inactivity."
And "Controlled trials in hypertensives show blood pressure lowering effects of supplemental potassium, fiber, n-3 fatty acids, and diets rich in fruit and vegetables and low in saturated fats".

With an aim to find a natural food for the prevention and treatment of hypertension, researchers examined the effect of daily supplementation of kale juice can modulate blood pressure (BP).

The study included 84 subclinical hypertensive patients with systolic BP over 130 mmHg or diastolic BP over 85 mmHg who received 300 ml/day of kale juice for 6 weeks.

According to the blood samples obtained on 0-week and 6-week, kale supplements showed a significantly decreased systolic and diastolic blood pressure in all patients regardless of their GSTM1 or GSTT1 polymorphisms.

According to the joint study led by the Isfahan University of Medical Sciences, GSTT1 and GSTM1 gene increases the arterial pressure; hence, it can predict the susceptibility to cardiovascular disease.

In other words, kale supplements inhibited the hyperactive parameters without being affected by the gene expression of GSTM1 or GSTT1 polymorphisms.

Furthermore, kale supplement exerted no effect on plasma lipid profiles of patients with GSTM1-null and GSTM1-present genotypes.

More importantly, the supplement also increased plasma HDL-C and lowered LDL-C in the GSTT1-present type, while blood glucose was decreased only in the GSTT1-null genotype.

Based on the findings, researchers suggested, kale processes a strong effect in lowering the blood pressure through other mechanisms, regardless of GSTT1 and GSTM1 gene types.

Taken altogether, kale juice may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of hypertension, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Turmeric Gobbles Up Plaques Against the Onset of Atherosclerosis

By Kyle J. Norton

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are a class of conditions associated with the dysfunction of the arteries and heart, affecting the heart functioning.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. Men are associated with 1/2 of the deaths due to heart disease in 2015 were in men, comapred to women.

Believe it or not, more than 63),000 Americans die from heart disease each year or 1 in every 4 deaths are caused by heart disease.

Atherosclerosis is a condition caused by long-term plaques built-up on the wall of the arteries. Over time, continued plaques accumulation can lead to cardiovascular disease.

In other words, narrowing the arteries due to plaques accumulation is a major cause of heart disease and stroke.

Plaque is made up of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances found in the blood.

Most common symptoms found in patients with antiatherosclerosis are involved in the reduce blood flow to the body, including chest pain or angina, pain in the leg, and arm, shortness of breath and fatigue and confusion.

According to Dr. Roma Pahwa and colleagues, atherosclerosis cause approximately 50% of all deaths in westernized society associated with the inflammation in the arteries involved in the accumulation of cholesterol in the bloodstream.

Epidemiologically, the most common risk factors of atherosclerosis are unhealthy blood cholesterol levels associated with high levels of bad and low levels of good cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking, insulin resistance, diabetes, overweight or obesity, physical inactivity.

Some researchers suggested that the promotion of a high-fat diet that induces widespread obesity in the Western world may be one of the major culprits that cause atherosclerosis.

Dr. Lovren F and colleagues wrote, "Obesity is a multifactorial chronic disease characterized by an accumulation of visceral and subcutaneous fat, which leads to a predisposition toward cardiometabolic diseases".

And, " A plethora of mechanisms, including abnormalities in lipid metabolism, insulin resistance, inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, adipokine imbalance, and inflammasome activation have been suggested to underlie the relationship between obesity and atherosclerosis.".

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belongings to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On findings a potential compound for the treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS), researchers examined the efficacy of supplementation with curcumin on reducing intestinal cholesterol absorption in animal models.

The study included high-fat diet-fed apolipoprotein E knockout (ApoE-/-) mice prevented atherosclerosis fed a high-fat diet supplemented with or without curcumin (0.1% w/w) for 16 weeks.

Based on the tested differentiation, the curcumin treatment group showed not only a reduced cholesterol accumulation in the aortas by 56% but also lowered plasma total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels comapred to the non-curcumin group.

Furthermore, curcumin supplementation group also demonstrated a reduced risk of atherosclerotic lesions by 45%.

Moreover, the efficacy of the anti antiatherogenic effect of curcumin was associated with a significant decrease in intestinal cholesterol absorption by 51% by inhibiting the intestinal gene expression of Niemann-Pick C1-like 1 involved in cholesterol uptakes.

Collectively, researchers said, "These findings support the hypothesis that curcumin supplementation reduces intestinal cholesterol absorption and prevents atherosclerosis in high-fat diet-fed ApoE-/- mice".

And " Curcumin affords a potent antiatherogenic action by inhibiting intestinal cholesterol absorption in the mouse".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Bromelain Improves the Symptoms and Quality of Life in Patients with Cystic Fibrosis

By Kyle J. Norton

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic preposition that leads to diseases mostly in the lungs in children and young adults.

Most cases of CF has been found to cause persistent infection in the lungs, leading to the destruction of lung tissues and reduced lung function, depending on the severity of the condition.

Most common complication of CF is difficulty digesting fats, proteins and nutrient absorption, progressive lung damage caused by ongoing infections and chronic low-grade inflammation and CF-related diabetes.

According to statistics provided by the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, approximately 1 in every 3,600 children born in Canada has CF.

In age perspective,
* 60% of patients are diagnosed in the first year of life, and 90% by 10 years of age.

* More than 47% of all Canadians with CF are over the age of 18 years.

* As of 2002, the median age of survival of Canadians with CF is 37 years of age.

Most common symptoms of CF are persistent cough with productive thick mucous, wheezing and shortness of breath,  frequent chest infections, weight loss or failure to gain weight, infertility in men and decreased fertility in women.

Conventionally, as of today, there is no cure for CF. Medications are focusing on reducing symptoms and improving quality of life, including
* Antibiotics for the treatment of lung infections.

* Anti-inflammatory medications to protect the lung airways.

* Medication to reduce cough up  the mucus

* Inhaled medications to keep your airways open by relaxing the muscles around your bronchial tubes

* Medication to help the digestive tract in absorbing nutrients

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.

On finding a natural compound for the treatment of cystic fibrosis, researchers compared with identical capsules half filled with mini-tablets of a new high lipase preparation in a randomized double-blind crossover study in children with cystic fibrosis.

All children participated in the study received his/her usual number of capsules and the same dose of lipase during each period of the study.

According to the results from the 18 children completed the study, pancreatic enzyme applied in the high lipase preparation showed fewer gastrointestinal symptoms compared to the low lipase group.

Compared to the baseline, pancreatic enzyme group showed a significant improvement in fat absorption and reduction in fecal fat output.

Fecal energy loss was also improved in the treatment group.

Based on the findings, researchers at the St James's Hospital wrote, " (The) half filled capsules of the new high lipase preparation are more effective than the standard preparation and it is likely that filled capsules would allow patients to use fewer than half the number of pancreatic enzyme capsules".

Taken altogether, bromelain may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of symptoms of cystic fibrosis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of bromelain in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Ashwagandha Reduces the Risk of Skin Cancer

By Kyle J. Norton

Skin, a large organ in the human not only acts as a barrier to protect the internal organs against the invasion of the foreign pathogen, but also protects the body against mechanical impacts and pressure, variations in temperature, radiation, and chemicals.

Skin cancer is a medical condition associated with irregular cell growth in the skin tissues.

Most cases of skin cancer start in the cells on the surface of the outermost inner lining tissue before penetrating into deeper layers.

After growing in size at the advanced stage, by penetrating into deeper layers of the infected tissue, the cells of the tumor may travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organs through blood and fluids circulation, leading to secondary metastasis of secondary breast, lung, and colon tumor.

Believe it or not, more people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year in the U.S. than all other cancers combined. As of today, there are 58 million American are living with skin cancer.

Approximately, 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70. The 5-year survival of among all people with melanoma of the skin is 92% compared to 100% of the localized skin cancer.

If you have experienced some of the symptoms such as a sore that doesn't heal or comes back after healing, a pale white or yellow flat areas that look like scars, raised and scaly red patches, small, smooth and shiny lumps that are pearly white, pink or red, a pink growth with raised edges and indents in the center and a growth that has small blood vessels on the surface of the skin, you may be on the early stage of skin cancer, please check with your doctor immediately.

Dr. Epstein JH. wrote, "Nonmelanoma skin cancers, like most malignancies, increase in incidence with increasing age. However, in general, they are not due to the aging process but are primarily due to solar radiation".

And, "genetic disease xeroderma pigmentosum support the concept that such damage, if not repaired, will lead to cancer formation. It also has been suggested that unrepaired damage to deoxyribonucleic (DNA) and other macromolecules is at least in part responsible for the aging process in general".
On finding a potent compound for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha) chemopreventive potential in a chemically-induced skin carcinogenesis mouse model.

According to the tested analysis, WA significantly suppressed skin tumor formation by suppressing cell proliferation.

Furthermore, carcinogen-induced the increase of acetyl-CoA carboxylase 1 (ACC1) associated with cancer metastasis was also blocked by application of WA.

Additionally, in melanoma cells, WA also suppressed the expression levels of ACC1.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "withaferin A may have potential in chemoprevention and ACC1 may serve as a critical target of WA".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of skin cancer in breast cancer patients, pending to the result of larger sample size and multicenter study

Red Chinese Cabbage Inhibits Vascular Inflammatory Diseases in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Inflammation is a natural immune response that protects our body against the invasion of stimuli and foreign pathogens.

During the acute phase of infection, the immune first line of defense activates the protein associated with the production of blood palettes to cover the wound and inflammatory cytokines to the site of injury with an aim to prevent and kill off harmful microorganisms.

However, overproduction of inflammatory cytokines not only can induce fever, swelling, and pain to the affected area but also damage to the nearby cells and tissue, leading to the formation of scars.

Chronic inflammatory diseases are the class of conditions involved in low-grade inflammation that affects tissue or organ. Some researchers suggested that the immune system has evolved over thousands of years to kill off the foreign invasive pathogens within a period of time, normally between 3 to 8 weeks. If the immune fails to do so, it will adapt to the new change, leading to chronic inflammation.

There are several factors that cause the onset of the conditions. Some scientists indicated untreated acute inflammation, such as an infection or injury and an autoimmune disorder involved immune system mistakenly attacking healthy tissue are the most causes of chronic inflammatory diseases.

Certain risk factors such as long-term exposure to irritants, such as industrial chemicals or polluted air, the increase in age, being obesity or obesity, low sex hormone production, sleep disorder and diet.

Furthermore, vascular inflammation increased the risk of CVD are found to have a close link between inflammation and redox balance or oxidative stress caused the imbalanced ratio of free radicals and antioxidants produced by the host.

Dr. Steven S, the lead scientist said, "Clinical trials have identified chronic inflammatory disorders as cardiovascular risks, and recent research has revealed a contribution by various inflammatory cells to vascular oxidative stress. Atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease are closely associated with inflammation, probably due to the close interaction of inflammation with oxidative stress".

And, "The value of immunomodulation for the treatment of cardiovascular disease was recently supported by large-scale clinical trials demonstrating reduced cardiovascular mortality in patients with the established atherosclerotic disease when treated by highly specific anti-inflammatory therapies (e.g., using monoclonal antibodies against cytokines)".

Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belonging to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem of which is crowded a mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.
With an aim to find a natural food for the prevention against disease associated with vascular inflammation, researchers examined the anti-inflammatory activities of an anthocyanin-rich extract from red Chinese cabbage (ArCC).

According to the analysis of cultured endothelial cells, ArCC treatment suppressed monocyte adhesion to tumor necrosis factor-α-in atherosclerotic plaque formation by inhibiting endothelial adhesion molecules.

The action of ArCC against vascular inflammation was attributed by decreasing the expression of a protein associated with cytokine production.

In hyperlipidemic apolipoprotein E-deficient mice, administration of ArCC (150 or 300 mg/kg/day) showed a similar effect on the inhibition of aortic inflammatory cytokines, reduction of plaque formation accompanied by the lowering the leukocyte infiltration.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, "The results suggest that the consumption of anthocyanin-rich red Chinese cabbage is closely correlated with lowering the risk of vascular inflammatory diseases".

Taken altogether, red Chinese cabbage processed abundantly anthocyanin may be considered a dietary vegetable for the prevention and treatment of vascular inflammatory diseases, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of anthocyanin in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Turmeric Protects the Neuron Against beta-Amyloid (betaA) Insults

By Kyle J. Norton

A neuron or nerve cell is a brain cell that carries electrical impulses. Neurons formed basic cords of the nervous system inclduing the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves.

The function of neurons is to process and transmit information that controls the body function.

Amyloid beta is the main component of the amyloid plaques found in the brains of Alzheimer patients.

Alzheimer's disease is a type of dementia correlated with major reductions of neurons to the respective target areas, named after German physician Alois Alzheimer.

In other words, Alzheimer's disease is caused by the gradual loss of neuron functioning that usually starts with the early symptom of the difficulty of remembering recent events and worsens over time.

Dementia is a group of neurodegenerative diseases caused by a decline in mental ability in the older population that is severe enough to interfere with daily life, such as memory loss.

Compared to dementia, neurological disorders are a class of brain disease associated with reduced function of the brain, depending on the region of the neurons that were affected.

Alzheimer's destroys brain cells, causing cognitive modalities severe enough to affect language communication, memory, lifelong hobbies or social life. Alzheimer's gets worse over time, and it is fatal.

The disease is most prevalent in the elderly and causes over 60% of all cases of dementia.

According to the statistics, approximately 5.7 million Americans of all ages are living with Alzheimer's.

Believe it or not, 15.9 million family caregivers provided an estimated 18.2 billion hours and $230 billion to people with dementia worldwide.

Epidemiological studies suggested that Alzheimer's disease is caused by a combination of genetic, lifestyle and environmental factors that affect the neurons of the brain over time. However, less 10% of patients with AD are associated with a genetic preposition. Patients with such mutated genes on chromosomes 21, 14, and 1are virtually guaranteed to develop the disease.

Dr. Lynn M. Bekris, the lead scientist said, "Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common causes of neurodegenerative disorder in elderly individuals. Clinically, patients initially present with short-term memory loss, subsequently followed by executive dysfunction, confusion, agitation, and behavioral disturbances".

And, " Three causative genes have been associated with autosomal dominant familial AD (APP, PSEN1, and PSEN2) and 1 genetic risk factor (APOEε4 allele)".

On findings a potential compound for the prevention of neuronal cell death in Alzheimer's disease, researchers comapred the effects of curcuminoids, curcumin, demethoxycurcumin, and bisdemethoxycurcumin and alpha-Tocopherol on beta-Amyloid (betaA) induced oxidative stress in brain cells.

According to the results from the tested analysis, all phytochemicals isolated from turmeric blocked the insults from the from betaA(1-42) in PC12 rat pheochromocytoma and normal human umbilical vein endothelial (HUVEC) cells.

Futhermore, the ED(50) values of curcumin, demethoxycurcumin, and bisdemethoxycurcumin toward PC12 and HUVEC cells were 7.1+/-0.3, 4.7+/-0.1, 3.5+/-0.2 microg/ml and 6.8+/-0.4, 4.2+/-0.3, and 3.0+/-0.3 microg/ml, respectively.

Moreover over, according to the DPPH radical trapping experiment assay, all 4 compounds exerted a strong antioxidant activity comapred to that of alpha-tocopherol.

Additionally, the injection of alpha-Tocopherol did not protect the cells from betaA(1-42) insult even at>50 microg/ml concentration.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, " The results suggest that these compounds may be protecting the cells from betaA(1-42) insult through antioxidant pathway".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of MS, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Turmeric Enhances the Immune Function Against the Onset of Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS)

By Kyle J. Norton

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a disease associated with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection at the most advanced stage.

In other words, if an HIV infected person has a CD4, the glycoprotein found on the surface of immune cells count less than 200 cells/mm3, he/she is considered to have developed AIDS.

AIDS is caused by the infection of HIV. However, most HIV infected patients are HIV carriers.

Most common risk factors associated with HIV injection are contacted body fluids such as infected blood, milk coming from a mother who carries the HIV, vaginal or anal sex, sharing drugs needles and oral sex.

Believe it or not, HIV cannot live outside the human body for long because the virus needs body fluid to survive.

According to the statistics, approximately, 1.1 million people in the US are living with HIV, including 15% of those don't know they are infected. Only half of the patients half are virally suppressed.
In 2016, 39,782 cases of new HIV were diagnosed.

Some researchers sexual behavior of a person may have a strong impact in increasing the risk of HIV injection. More precisely,

Dr. Molly S. Rosenberg, the lead scientist wrote, "HIV prevalence was very high among HAALSI participants (23%, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 21 to 24), with no sex differences. Recent sexual activity was common (56%, 95% CI: 55 to 58) across all HIV status categories. Condom use was low among HIV-negative adults (15%, 95% CI: 14 to 17), higher among HIV-positive adults who were unaware of their HIV status (27%, 95% CI: 22 to 33), and dramatically higher among HIV-positive adults who were aware of their status (75%, 95% CI: 70 to 80). Casual sex and multiple partnerships were reported at moderate levels, with slightly higher estimates among HIV-positive compared to HIV-negative adults".

And, "Older HIV-positive adults in an HIV hyperendemic community of rural South Africa report sexual behaviors consistent with high HIV transmission risk. Older HIV-negative adults report sexual behaviors consistent with high HIV acquisition risk".

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belongings to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

With an aim to find a natural compound for the treatment of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, researchers examined the immunomodulatory effects of Curcuma longa L., purple sweet potato, and mixtures of the two (CPM) in an animal model.

The study included selected C57BL/6 mice infected with LP-BM5 murine leukemia virus (MuLV), randomly divided into seven groups as follows:
* Normal control,

* Infected control (LP-BM5 MuLV infection),

* Positive control (LP-BM5 MuLV infection+dietary supplement of red ginseng 300 mg/kg body weight),

* The original powder of C. longa L. (C; LP-BM5 MuLV infection+dietary supplement of C 189 mg/kg body weight),

* The original powder of purple sweet potato (P; LP-BM5 MuLV infection+dietary supplement of P 1811 mg/kg body weight), CPM Low (CPL; LP-BM5 MuLV infection+CPM 2 g/kg body weight), and

* CPM High (CPH; LP-BM5 MuLV infection+CPM 5 g/kg body weight). Dietary supplementation lasted for 12 weeks.

According to the tested assays, dietary supplementation of CPM inhibited LP-BM5 MuLV-induced lymphadenopathy, an inflammatory disease of the lymph nodes and splenomegaly, a condition of abnormal enlargement of the spleen.

Furthermore, CPM also enhanced the immune function in recognizing the invasive and foreign virus, that may weaken the immune system to initiate the onset of infection.

In other words, CPM enhanced the immune function against the progression of MuLV.

More precisely, CPM reduced the decrease in T- and B cell proliferation, reduced the population of CD4(+)/CD8(+) T cells, and inhibited the unbalanced production of T helper-1 (Th1)/T helper-2 (Th2) cytokines in LP-BM5 MuLV-infected mice.

Moreover, the immune function also was exhibited by the injection of CPM observed by the supplement immune modulatory activity, including the inhibition of the reduction of phagocytosis in peritoneal macrophages and decreased serum levels of immunoglobulin A (IgA), immunoglobulin E (IgE), and immunoglobulin G (IgG).

Based on the results, researchers after taking other factors into account wrote, "CPM had a positive effect on immunomodulation in C57BL/6 mice induced by LP-BM5 leukemia retrovirus infection".

Taken altogether, turmeric used alone or combined with other herbal medicines may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
