Furthermore, bilberry anthocyanin extract consumption also decreased the activity of digestive enzymes in breaking down food correlated to the changes in bacterial composition, short-chain fatty acids, and the intestinal mucosal barrier.
In other words, bilberry anthocyanin extract consumption improved the digestive function without affecting the activity of the digestive enzyme which has been found in low levels in people with digestive problems including the aging population.
Dr. Li J, the lead scientist said, " bilberry anthocyanin extract consumption is a potential approach for assisting healthy aging".

Free radicals are highly reactive molecules with an unpaired electron on the outer ring of the atom.
Due to its nature to become stable, free radicals readily donate or steal an electron from other molecules, leading to the chain of domino effect that can not be stopped until either the electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.
This chain of reaction is the cause of oxidative stress, a condition associated with either overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host organs.
Overexpression of free radicals is known to cause damage in contribute to the etiology of many chronic health problems such as cardiovascular and inflammatory disease, cataracts, and cancer.
Oxidative stress is a result of an imbalance in the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body.
Cleaver is a herbaceous annual plant, genus Galium, belonging to the family Rubiaceae, native to North America and Eurasia. The herb has been used over thousands of years in herbal and traditional medicine as a mild diuretic and blood and lymphatic cleanser to treat psoriasis, skin conditions, glands, tonsillitis, bladder infections, prevent small kidney stones, etc.
In finding a potential compound for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers compared the phenolic content and the antioxidant activity of Anthyllis vulneraria L., Fuchsia sp., Galium mollugo L., and Veronica beccabunga L.
According to the chemical analysis, the Galium mollugo polyphenol tannin, and flavonoid contents are 1.77 ± 0.05, 0.49 ± 0.04 and 0.16 ± 0.06 g/100 g dry weight) compared to those of Fuchsia species of 7.40 ± 0.8, 5.62 ± 0.7 and 0.72 ± 0.1 g/100 g dry weight and Anthyllis vulneraria (0.68 ± 0.02, 0.17 ± 0.03 and 0.45 ± 0.01 g/100 g dry weight., respectively.
More precisely, herbal cleaver(Galium aparine) showed a higher total polyphenol, tannin, and flavonoid contents than A. vulneraria but lower, compared to those of Fuchsia sp.
In other words, all antioxidant compounds found in herbal cleaver(Galium aparine) work together to exert anti-free radical activity in the stimulation of the onset of oxidative stress.
Taken together, Cleaver processed an antioxidant activity against the risk of oxidative stress, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient for the treatment of varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), researchers compared the efficacy of Pycnogenol, venoraton, troxerutin, the complex diosmin-hesperidin, Antistax, Mirtoselect (bilberry), escin, and the combination Venoruton-Pycnogenol (VE-PY) against the therapeutic compressions.
The study included 1,051 patients who completed the registry. During the experiment, there were no safety or tolerability problems observed.
Mirtoselect (bilberry) showed a significant effect on skin flux but to a lesser extent compared to those of Venoruton, Pycnogenol, and the combination VE-PY.
The edema score was decreased more effectively with the combination and with Pycnogenol compared to the other treatment group including the Mirtoselect (bilberry).
According to the improvement in symptoms score, Pycnogenol and compression showed a larger decrease in oxidative stress compared to the Pycnogenol, Venoruton, Mirtoselect (bilberry), and with the VE-PY combination.
However, the efficacy of Pycnogenol and the combination are competitive with stockings that do not have the same tolerability in warmer climates compared to other groups.
The findings suggested that the tested compounds processed anti-chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) and varicose veins properties.
Taken altogether, Mirtoselect (bilberry) may be considered a functioning remedy for the treatment of varicose veins with no side effects, pending the validation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

The edema score was decreased more effectively with the combination and with Pycnogenol compared to the other treatment group including the Mirtoselect (bilberry).
According to the improvement in symptoms score, Pycnogenol and compression showed a larger decrease in oxidative stress compared to the Pycnogenol, Venoruton, Mirtoselect (bilberry), and with the VE-PY combination.
However, the efficacy of Pycnogenol and the combination are competitive with stockings that do not have the same tolerability in warmer climates compared to other groups.
The findings suggested that the tested compounds processed anti-chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) and varicose veins properties.
Taken altogether, Mirtoselect (bilberry) may be considered a functioning remedy for the treatment of varicose veins with no side effects, pending the validation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

The study included ICR mice (6-8 weeks old, male) fed with BMP (0.1% or 0.3%) for 1 week, and on day 7, MSG (4 mg/g) was administered intraperitoneally.
Before application of BMP, administration of MSG showed a significant decrease of antioxidant biomarkers such as total glutathione level and antioxidant enzyme activities such as glutathione reductase (GR), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione S-transferase (GST), and quinone reductase (NQO1) and increase of the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS).
After the injection of BMP supplementation, treated mice markedly enhanced the hepatic antioxidant enzyme activities.
Furthermore, BMP supplementation decreased total cholesterol, atherogenic index, and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, compared to the MSG-treated group.
Dr. Park CH the lead author in the heart team wrote, "Based on these results, it was proposed that BMP improve the plasma lipid profiles and decrease the oxidative stress by up-regulating the hepatic antioxidant enzymes in mice challenged with MSG.".
Additionally, in the review of the anti-obesity effect of an extract of Petasites japonicus (a culinary vegetable from Eastern Asia) (PJET) on a murine adipocyte cell line (3T3-L1) and on diet-induced obesity-prone mice, researchers showed PJET lowered the body weight gain and visceral fat tissue accumulation and ameliorated the plasma cholesterol concentration.
Furthermore, PJET significantly attenuated three adipogenic transcription factors, which play a crucial role in adipogenic induction associated with adipocyte differentiation and cholesterol homeostasis, and genes involved in higher levels of total cholesterol.

Cancer is a group of cell-mutated diseases caused by the alternation of DNA.
Most cases of cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the tissue of an organ. At an early, most people with cancer are asymptomatic, however, later, due to the size and the tumor, patients may experience general cancer symptoms such as unintended weight loss, fatigue, gastrointestinal discomfort loss of appetite, and localized symptoms such as severe pain and bleeding.
The exact causes of cancer are not identified. As of today, researchers do not know why one person develops cancer and another doesn’t, even though they share some common risk factors for the disease.
However, most prevalent factors associated with the cancer onset include age, family history, long-term exposure to certain cancer-induced chemicals, use of tobacco, and excessive alcohol drinking,..... the list goes on and on, depending on the type of cancer.
Some researchers suggested that the most common risk factor that causes cancer in the Western world may be associated with widespread obesity.
Dr. Karen Basen-Engquist, in the evaluation of the obesity risk of cancer, said, "In the United States, approximately 85,000 new cancer cases per year are related to obesity. Recent research has found that as the body mass index increases by 5 kg/m2, cancer mortality increases by 10%".
And, "High priorities for future research involve additional work on the underlying mechanisms, and trials to examine the effect of lifestyle behavior change and weight loss interventions on cancer and intermediate biomarkers".
The findings strongly indicated the risk of cancer is increased substantially in obese.
Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.
The plant has been used as herb in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, psoriasis, diabetes, etc.
Searching the list of natural compounds with a strong potential for the treatment of cancer with no side effects, scientists investigated the secondary metabolites including flavonoids (1-8), caffeic (9) and chlorogenic (10) acids from the extract of Sakhalin bilberry Vaccinium smallii leaves in vitro.
All 10 metabolites included in the study displayed a significant effect in the inhibition of EGF-induced neoplastic transformation in the conversion of normal cells into tumor cells of mouse JB6 Cl 41 P+ cells.
Furthermore, none of the compounds isolated from bilberry extract showed non-toxic against JB6 Cl 41 P+ cells up to a concentration of 200 µm.
The results suggested that bilberry secondary metabolites protect the normal against the alternation of the cell's DNA without causing harm to the nearby healthy normal cells.
In HL60 cells, injection of bilberry extract induced apoptotic cell bodies and nucleosomal DNA fragmentation.
However, bilberry did not exert similar effects against the HCT116. The proportion of apoptotic cells induced in HCT116 was much lower than that in HL60 cells, without the presence of DNA fragmentation.
According to the extracted analysis, the efficacy of bilberry against cancer cell lines was attributed to the bioactive phenolic compounds, including anthocyanins in initiating the free radical scavenging property.
Dr. Katsube N, the lead scientist after taking into account co and confounders wrote in the final report, "These results indicate that the bilberry extract and the anthocyanins, bearing delphinidin or malvidin as the aglycon, inhibit the growth of HL60 cells through the induction of apoptosis".
Taken altogether, bilberry processed significant bioactive secondary metabolites may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of cancer, pending the validation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.
