#Ginger Exerts a Modulatory Effects on Septic Responses and Survival Rate, Scientists Show

Kyle J. Norton

Sepsis is a medical condition caused by the body's over-response to infection by releasing a large number of chemicals into the bloodstream, leading to a chemical imbalance that can damage multiple organ systems.

The most common sites of infection leading to sepsis are found in older patients with the lungs, urinary tract, tummy (abdomen), and pelvis.

The causes of sepsis, in most cases, are involved in people with a weakened immune system or a severe infection that allows the inflammation to spread to the entire body.

Sepsis can be life-threatening due to the interruption of blood flow to the body caused by inflammation in the induction of blood vessel constriction.

The risk factors of sepsis include any medical conditions that can lead to a weakened immune system, such as AIDs and chemotherapy, the very young (immature immune system) and old (weakened immune system due to aging), pregnancy, and diabetes.

The most common symptoms of sepsis are associated with symptoms of reduced blood flow, including, a decrease in mental ability, and problems breathing. abnormal heart functions, fall in blood pressure and fall in body temperature. unconsciousness.

If your child or you experience some of the above symptoms, please call the emergency services right away.

Some researchers suggested that people who are obese may have a negative implication on the immune system in fighting against infection that can cause sepsis.

Dr. A S Kolyva, the lead scientist said, "Sepsis is one of the most important causes of mortality in the developed world, where almost two-thirds of the population suffer from obesity".

And, "Obesity is associated with elevated TNFα adipose tissue production and increased oxidative stress biomarkers, promoting the proinflammatory response in septic patients".

These results strongly suggested that obesity may induce overexpression of proinflammatory cytokines that not only initiate the onset of sepsis but also increase the potential negative impact on the outcome.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

With an aim to find a natural compound or food for the treatment of sepsis, researchers investigated the effects of a phenolic alkenone isolated from ginger in various pharmacological activities, including sepsis.

Injection of ginger exerted a modulatory effect on HMGB1-mediated septic responses and survival rate in a mouse model of sepsis.

The modulation of ginger was attributed to the suppression of the production of inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-6 and the activation of proteins associated with inflammation induced by HMGB.

High mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) is a protein associated with the immune protective response by restoring the endothelial cells that line the interior surface of blood vessels and lymphatic vessel integrity.

Furthermore, the injection of ginger also inhibited HMGB1-mediated hyperpermeability and leukocyte migration in the initiation of inflammation in mice.

Moreover, in vivo, ginger inhibited lymphopoiesis (CLP) in stimulating the production of the release of HMGB1, sepsis-related mortality, and tissue injury.

In order to reveal more information about ginger antisepsis activity, researchers examined zingerone (ZGR), a bioactive compound isolated from ginger on TGFBIp-mediated septic responses.

Similar to that of the above, ZGR reduced the TGFBIp-mediated severe inflammatory responses in human endothelial cells and mice.

Injection of ZGR suppressed TGFBIp-induced sepsis lethality and pulmonary injury.

Dr. Min G, the lead scientist, after taking into account co and confounders wrote in the final report, "ZGR could be a potential therapeutic agent for the treatment of various severe vascular inflammatory diseases via inhibition of the TGFBIp signaling pathway".

Taken together, ginger may be considered a functional remedy for the treatment of sepsis, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Healthy Food #BroccoliSprout #SFN Inhibit Markers of Inflammation Associated with Infection of Influenza Viruses, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Influenza also known as "the flu", is an infectious disease caused by an influenza virus.
In other words, flu (influenza) is an infectious disease caused by RNA viruses of the family Orthomyxoviridae (the influenza virus) that can lead to symptoms of chills, fever, sore throat, muscle pains, severe headache, coughing, etc.

There are 3 types of flu influenza: A, B, and C. The influenza viruses A and B are considered seasonal flu that causes sniffling, aching, coughing, running and stuffy nose, and fever to over 20% of the general population.

Influenza virus type C tends to cause mild upper respiratory infections, similar to those of colds.

Healthy individuals who have influenza are usually recovered within one week.

However, people with immature and weakened immune systems such as young children under age 5, adults older than age 65 residents of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities, and chronic illnesses, such as asthma, heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease, and diabetes are not only associated with the risk of influenza but also increase the risk of influenza deadly complication.

Pregnant women and women up to two weeks postpartum due to changes in the immune system and other organs have been found to make a woman more prone to influenza and influenza complications.

The most common H and N subtypes are influenza A which has been mutated to affect the combination of human, swine, and bird flu viruses, including
* H1N1 - Swine Flu
H1N1 normally is only transmitted among pigs. However, as of today, H1N1 has become the first flu pandemic in the world that causes respiratory illness.

* H5N1 - Bird Flu
H5N1 is the strain of influenza known as bird or avian flu. Before, it was transmitted between birds, but today, it can be passed from bird to human. The strain is dangerous to humans with high death rates.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belonging to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color with a mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant from the continent of Europe.

With an aim to find a natural food for the prevention and treatment of viral diseases, researchers examined the effects of broccoli sprout homogenates (BSH) on nasal cytokines, virus replication, and Nrf2-dependent enzyme expression in smokers and nonsmokers.

The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial included healthy young adult smokers and nonsmokers who ingested BSH or placebo (alfalfa sprout homogenate) for 4 days, designated Days -1, 0, 1, 2. and on day 0 they received standard vaccine dose of live attenuated influenza virus (LAIV) intranasally.
According to the tested analysis,
* In the area under curve analyses, post-LAIV IL-6 responses (P = 0.03) and influenza sequences (P = 0.01) were significantly reduced in NLF from BSH-treated smokers.

* However, In nonsmokers, a similar trend for reduction in virus quantity with BSH did not reach statistical significance.

In other words, in smokers, short-term ingestion of broccoli sprout homogenates appears to significantly reduce some virus-induced markers of inflammation, and virus quantity compared to less significant in non-smokers.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, " Nutritional antioxidant interventions have promise as a safe, low-cost strategy for reducing influenza risk among smokers and other at-risk populations".
And "However, because variability exists in the timing and methods of detection for SFN conjugate levels, it is difficult to compare systemic SFN levels across studies".

In other words, SFN protects the integrity of the neurons against neuron damage through its anti-neuroinflammatory and neuroprotective activities.

Taken together, broccoli sprouts may be considered supplements for the prevention of influenza, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of SFN in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

A Mixture of Low Concentrations of #I3C (50 μM) Plus #Silibinin (50 μM) Inhibits Lung Cancer Cell Growth and Promotes Apoptosis, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Some scientists found that indole-3-carbinol, an organic compound found in cruciferous vegetables, may potentially reduce the risk and treatment of lung cancer.

Lung cancer is a class of chronic and medical disease caused by irregular cell growth originating from the inner lining of the lung tissue due to DNA alternation.

At the advanced stage after colonizing most parts of the lung, the cancerous cells can travel from the primary site to infect other healthy tissue and organs a distance away.

In the US, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths, causing 158,683 deaths, including 88,329 men and 70,354 women, according to the 2007 statistics.

Researchers do not the exact causes of lung cancer. As of today, no one knows why people with similar health conditions, family history, and race, some are susceptible to the early onset of the disease while others do not.

Some researchers suggested genetic mutation and long-term cigarette smoking are 2 major risk factors associated with the alternative of lung cell DNA.

Indeed, according to the statistics, approximately 8% of lung cancers are inherited or occur due to a genetic predisposition.

Dr. Ahmed El-Telbany, the lead scientist in the study "Cancer Genes in Lung Cancer. Racial Disparities: Are There Any?" said, "Mutational analysis and genomics profiling in recent years have advanced the field of lung cancer genetics/genomics significantly. It is becoming more accepted now that the identification of genomic alterations in lung cancer can impact therapeutics, especially when the alterations represent “oncogenic drivers” in the processes of tumorigenesis and progression" and

"The genes which are associated with lung cancer risk include EGFR, KRAS, MET, LKB1, BRAF, PIK3CA, ALK, RET, and ROS1".

Genetic mutation inherited from the parents is a result of an autosomal dominant pattern, which means one copy of the altered gene in each cell is sufficient to increase a person's chance of developing lung cancer.

However, not all people who carry mutated lung cancer genes will develop lung cancer.

Cigarette smoking in the risk of lung cancer, researchers believe cigarettes contain high amounts of cancer-causing substances (carcinogens), when inhaled, the cigarette smoke carries the chemical toxins to the lung cells directly, and prolonged periods of exposure to such chemicals can alternate lung cell DNA, leading to the early onset of lung cancer.

The joint study to examine the impact of smoking on risks of the major cell types of lung cancer led by the Institute of Ruhr Universität Bochum (IPA) included 13,169 cases and 16,010 controls from Europe and Canada suggested
* Squamous cell carcinoma (SqCC) predominated in male smokers.

* The ORs were elevated for all metrics of exposure to cigarette smoke and were higher for SqCC and small cell lung cancer (SCLC) than for Adenocarcinoma (AdCa)

* Current male smokers with an average daily dose of >30 cigarettes had ORs of 103.5 (95% CI 74.8-143.2) for SqCC, 111.3 (95% CI 69.8-177.5) for small cell lung cancer (SCLC), and 21.9 (95% CI 16.6-29.0) for AdCa.

These results surely reconfirmed the epidemiological studies' suggestion, that long-term use of cigarettes is associated with a substantially increased risk of lung cancer regardless of gender.

Indole-3-carbinol is a phytochemical in the class of Indoles found abundantly in cabbage, kale, Brussels sprouts, rutabaga, mustard greens, broccoli, etc.

With an aim to find the natural ingredient for the treatment of lung cancer without inducing any adverse effects, the University of Minnesota conducted a study to test the chemopreventive efficacy of indole-3-carbinol (I3C), a phytochemical found in cruciferous vegetables, to inhibit tobacco carcinogen-induced lung adenocarcinoma in A/J mice.

Before the infection of indole-3-carbinol (I3C), the tested mice were given a post-initiation or progression protocol.

Post-initiation administration of I3C decreased the multiplicity of surface tumors as well as all forms of histopathological lesions, including adenocarcinoma.

Further analysis of the effect of indole-3-carbinol (I3C), in the A549 lung adenocarcinoma cell line, researchers indicated that the lung cancer-preventive effects of I3C are mediated, at least in part, via modulation of the receptor tyrosine kinase/PI3K/Akt signaling pathway in the inhibition of cell growth and proliferation.

However, the administration of the compound during tumor progression failed to decrease the multiplicity of surface tumors and early forms of microscopic lesions but reduced the frequency of adenocarcinoma.

In vivo, administration of a mixture of low concentrations of I3C (50 μM) plus silibinin (50 μM) for 72 h also displayed significant inhibition of cell growth through the expression of the extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) and Akt activation in the induction of apoptosis of A549 and H460 lung cancer cells.

Moreover, in the examination, the effects of indole-3-carbinol (I3C), in a mixture of NNK plus BaP (2 micromols each), administered by gavage as eight biweekly doses caused 21.1 +/- 5.2 lung tumors in a mouse model.

* Lung cancer-induced mice given diets containing I3C at 1, 10, 30, 71, and 112 micromol/g, beginning at 50% in the carcinogen treatment phase, had 17.9 +/- 6.1, 10.4 +/- 3.7, 9.8 +/- 5.1, 5.2 +/- 4.0, and 2.5 +/- 2.4 lung tumors per mouse, corresponding to reductions by 15%, 51%, 53%, 75%, and 88%, respectively.

* I3C was significantly effective at the lowest dose level (1 micromol I3C/g diet).

* Administration of I3C (112 micromols/g diet) beginning 1 week after the last dose of the carcinogen significantly reduced lung cancer induced by NNK plus BaP by 74%.

* I3C inhibited the lung cancer progression partly through antiproliferative and apoptotic activity.

Dr. Kassie F, the lead scientist, at the final phase of the experiment, said, "The efficacy of I3C in the prevention of tobacco carcinogen-induced lung tumorigenesis in A/J mice and provide a basis for future evaluation of this compound in clinical trials as a chemopreventive agent for current and former smokers".

Taken together, phytochemical Indole-3-carbinol may be considered a functional bioactive compound for the prevention of lung cancer and a secondary therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of lung cancer, depending on the further data collection of the large sample size and multi-center human study.

Dietary #Supplements (125 mg Green Tea, 25 mg Capsaicin, and 50 mg Ginger #Extracts) Decrease Weight and Body Mass Index, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

In seeking natural therapy with no side effects, scientists may have a vegetable in the induction of weight loss, according to studies.
Weight loss is a process that intentionally reduces the total body mass, through the decrease of fluid, body fat adipose tissue, or lean mass.

Due to the widespread obesity in North America (over 68% of the US population is either overweight or obese), many weight loss products were created by manufacturers. Weight loss products is a 66 billion business in the US, according to the statistics provided by the Marketdata LLC research firm. And the business continues to grow at a rapid rate.

Have the weight loss products worked? I don't think so. Otherwise, the percentage of the overweight population in the US should be decreased substantially.

In other words, all weight loss products may have a complex structure or a long-term commitment before the results can be seen.

The National Institutes of Health wrote, "You might be surprised to learn that makers of weight-loss supplements rarely carry out studies in people to find out whether their product works and is safe. And when studies are done, they usually involve only small numbers of people who take the supplement for just a few weeks or months. To know whether a weight-loss supplement can help people lose weight safely and keep it off, larger groups of people need to be studied for a longer time.".

In short, most weight products are buy-at-your-own-risk products.

In fact, everyone knows, that the proven ways to lose weight are eating healthful foods, cutting calories, and being physically active.

Dr. Catherine M. Champagne and colleagues in the investigation of healthy diets and weight loss, wrote, "Increased intake of fruits and vegetables was associated with weight loss in Phases I and II: 0.29 kg per 6-months (p<0.0001) and 0.04 kg per 6-months (p=0.0062), respectively, per 1-serving increase. Substitution of carbohydrates for fat and protein for carbohydrates was associated with weight loss during both phases".

And, "Increasing dairy intake was associated with significant weight loss during Phase II (−0.17 kg per 6-months per 1-serving increase, p=0.0002), but not in Phase I. Dietary fiber revealed no significant findings".

The results strongly suggested that if you want to lose weight, you better follow a healthy diet with an increased intake of fruits and vegetables.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine for the treatment of dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

Scientists to find an herbal remedy that has the potential to stimulate weight loss examined the dietary supplements containing green tea, capsaicin, and ginger extracts on weight loss and metabolic profiles among overweight women.

The randomized double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trial included 50 overweight women who satisfied the criteria and guidelines.

Selected candidates were randomly divided into 2 groups. Group A received dietary supplements containing 125 mg green tea, 25 mg capsaicin, and 50 mg ginger extracts (n = 25) group B received placebos (n = 25) twice with lunch and twice with dinner daily for 8 weeks.

Supplement treatment groups showed a significant decrease in weight and body mass index compared to the control.

Women who received the supplement exerted a strong improvement in metabolic profiles including decreased serum insulin concentrations, insulin resistance (-0.5 ± 0.8 vs. -0.05 ± 0.6, p = 0.01), and increased insulin sensitivity, compared to control.

Furthermore, the antioxidant enzymes produced by the host in the supplement group also was enhanced compared to the control.

The results indicated that daily intake of the supplement may have a positive impact on inducing weight loss through improving the body's metabolism and antioxidant activity.

Dr, Taghizadeh M and colleagues wrote in the final report, "Taking green tea, capsaicin, and ginger co-supplements for 8 weeks among overweight women had beneficial effects on weight, BMI, markers of insulin metabolism and plasma GSH levels".

In order to reveal more information about using ginger to lose weight, researchers investigated the effect of ginger intake on weight loss, glycemic control, and lipid profiles among overweight and obese subjects by reaching the medical literature online.

The selection of the quality of the studies is based on guidelines of the Cochrane risk of bias tool.

According to the 14 studies with 473 subjects included in the meta-analysis, supplementation with ginger significantly decreased body weight (BW), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), hip ratio (HR), and fasting glucose, compared to placebo.

Moreover, decreased insulin resistance and significantly increased HDL-cholesterol levels were also observed in the ginger treatment groups.

Surprisingly, ginger supplements showed no effect on body mass index (BMI), insulin, triglycerides, total- and LDL-cholesterol.

Dr.Maharlouei N, the lead scientist after taking into account co and confounders said, "Overall, the current meta-analysis demonstrated that ginger intake reduced BW, WHR, HR, fasting glucose and HOMA-IR, and increased HDL-cholesterol, but did not affect insulin, BMI, triglycerides, total- and LDL-cholesterol levels".

Taken altogether, ginger used alone or combined with other supplements may be considered a functional remedy for inducing weight loss in overweight and obese populations, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Dangguishaoyao-San (DSS) Protects the Neurons Against Neuro-Inflammation and Onset of Cancer, Researchers Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

The central system is the complex of nerve tissues including the brain and spinal cord with functions to respond to the integrating sensory information.
Neuroinflammation is a process of the immune system that responds to harmful pathogens that induce oxidative stress in the brain.

Neuroinflammation is also the inflammation of nervous tissue associated with the immune response in the first phase of infection including infection, traumatic brain injury, toxic metabolites, or autoimmunity.

There are many risk factors associated with the onset of neuroinflammation similar to other tissue inflammation, including infection, traumatic brain injury, toxic metabolites, or autoimmunity.

Inflammation is a natural response of the immune system in which the macrophages of the first defense stimulate the production of a blood palette to cover the wound in case of injury and the production of proinflammatory cytokines to the site of infection to fence off the foreign pathogens.

Inflammation also can be triggered by the immune mistakenly attacking the body tissues in cases of autoimmune disease.

The neuroinflammatory disease can be acute or chronic. Chronic neuroinflammation that leads to the activation of glial cells and the recruitment of inflammatory cytokines into the brain is found to be associated with neurodegenerative diseases.

Most cases of neuroinflammatory disease are associated with the loss of neuronal structure and function. can be measured by the typical inflammatory markers, including CSF Aβ1-42, tau and p-tau181, and a panel of 37 neuroinflammatory markers in patients with Alzheimer's disease.

In finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of neurological disorders, scientists examined the effects of dangguishaoyao-san (DSS) (Angelica sinensis, Paeoniae radix, Rhizoma Ligusticum, Poria cocos, Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, and Rhizoma Alismatis) on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated BV-2 microglial cells.

Angelica or Danggui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen the heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

According to the results of BV-2 cells pretreated with 0.58-1.16 mg/mL of DSS for 2 h and then treated with 1 μg/mL LPS for 24 h,
* DSS treatment at concentrations of 0.58-1.16 mg/mL did not induce significant cytotoxicity.

* DSS attenuated the release of pro-inflammatory factors, such as interleukin-1β (IL-1β), iNOS, and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in LPS-induced BV-2 cells.

* DSS attenuated the mRNA expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, TLR2, and TLR4 by decreasing TLR4 and TLR protein levels and decreased levels of phosphorylation of IκB which regulates the cellular response to inflammation in LPS-induced BV-2 cells.

* DSS also down-regulated the nuclear translocation of p65 in the initiation of cancer cell proliferation and survival.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, " DSS has a protective effect on neuroinflammation in LPS-induced BV-2 microglial cells through the TLRs/NF-κB signaling pathway".

Taken altogether, Dandelion may be considered an antioxidant remedy for the treatment of neuroinflammation, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Pancreatic Enzyme and Nutrizym 22 Improve Symptoms and Quality of Life in Children with Cystic Fibrosis, Reserachers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic preposition that leads to diseases mostly in the lungs in children and young adults.
Most cases of CF have been found to cause persistent infection in the lungs, leading to the destruction of lung tissues and reduced lung function, depending on the severity of the condition.

The most common complication of CF is difficulty digesting fats, proteins, and nutrient absorption, progressive lung damage caused by ongoing infections chronic low-grade inflammation, and CF-related diabetes.

According to statistics provided by the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, approximately 1 in every 3,600 children born in Canada has CF.

In age perspective,
* 60% of patients are diagnosed in the first year of life, and 90% by 10 years of age.

* More than 47% of all Canadians with CF are over the age of 18 years.

* As of 2002, the median age of survival of Canadians with CF is 37 years of age.

The most common symptoms of CF are persistent cough with productive thick mucous, wheezing and shortness of breath, frequent chest infections, weight loss or failure to gain weight, infertility in men, and decreased fertility in women.

Conventionally, as of today, there is no cure for CF. Medications are focusing on reducing symptoms and improving quality of life, including

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.

In finding a natural compound for the treatment of cystic fibrosis, researchers compared identical capsules half-filled with mini-tablets of a new high lipase preparation in a randomized double-blind crossover study in children with cystic fibrosis.

All children who participated in the study received his/her usual number of capsules and the same dose of lipase during each period of the study.

According to the results from the 18 children who completed the study, the pancreatic enzyme applied in the high lipase preparation showed fewer gastrointestinal symptoms compared to the low lipase group.

Compared to the baseline, the pancreatic enzyme group showed a significant improvement in fat absorption and a reduction in fecal fat output.

Fecal energy loss was also improved in the treatment group.

Based on the findings, researchers at the St James's Hospital wrote, " (The) half-filled capsules of the new high lipase preparation are more effective than the standard preparation and it is likely that filled capsules would allow patients to use fewer than half the number of pancreatic enzyme capsules".

Taken together, bromelain may be considered supplement for the prevention and treatment of symptoms of cystic fibrosis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Cranberry #Extract #Oximacro(®) Inhibits Herpes Simplex Virus 1 and 2 (HSV-1, 2) Infection, Scientists Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) primarily causes oral herpes, including cold sores and fever blisters around the mouth and on the face.
Herpes simplex virus-2 (HSV-2) primarily causes genital herpes and genital herpes outbreaks

Infection can be acute or chronic. In the acute phase of infection, after receiving the messages from the central nervous system related to the danger of microbial infection, the immune macrophages in the first line of defense stimulate the production of blood palette to cover the wound and pro-inflammatory cytokines to the site of the infection to kill off pathogens which try to enter the body.

However, the overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the acute phase of infection has also killed off or damaged to the nearby healthy cells, leading to the formation of scars.

In most cases in a healthy individual, the immune system can easily eradicate all foreign invaders and the wound is recovered within days and weeks.

Symptoms of the acute infection include gastrointestinal discomforts, such as congestion vomiting or nausea, diarrhea, short-term joint or muscle pain, fever, headache, skin rash, and cough, Some patients with acute infection also experience symptoms of swollen lymph nodes, an indication of the body is fighting infection.

In chronic infection, the symptoms are most vague or no specific symptoms, including bronchitis and asthma, persistent low-grade chronic joint and muscle pain, or swelling, and the alternations between diarrhea and constipation, bloating, or heartburn, In other words, the symptoms are totally depended on the location of the low-grade inflammation.

Most cases of infection except those of viral infection are treated by topical antibiotic cream and/or oral antibiotics.

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of skin infection, researchers investigated the effects of cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon Ait.) extracts Oximacro(®) against Herpes simplex type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2) infections.

In vitro, the novel cranberry extract Oximacro(®) and its purified A-type proanthocyanidins (PACs-A) inhibited HSV-1 and HSV-2 replication.

Furthermore, Oximacro(®) prevented the adsorption of HSV-1 and HSV-2 to target cells.

Moreover, Oximacro(®) and its PACs-A targeted the viral envelope glycoproteins gD and gB to enter cells, thus resulting in the loss of infectivity of HSV particles.

Most importantly, Oximacro(®) completely exerted continuously its anti-HSV activity even at acidic pHs (3.0 and 4.0) and in the presence of 10% human serum proteins, and conditions that mimic the physiological properties of the vagina.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Oximacro(®) is an attractive candidate for the development of novel microbicides of natural origin for the prevention of HSV infections".

Taken together, cranberry may be considered an immune-modulatory remedy, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
