#Emodin in #Herbal #CascaraSagrada Inhibits the Risk of HSV by Reducing Plaque Formation or Cell-to-Cell infection, Viral Transcription and Replication

Kyle J. Norton

Herbal Cascara sagrada may be the next generation of the natural vaccine in reducing risk and treatment of viral infection, according to studies.

Similar to bacterial infection, both infections shared common characteristics by spreading through coughing and sneezing and contact with infected people, especially through kissing and sex.

However, the virus may also cause infection by entering the body through wounds and cut. Most viruses are killed in the acute phase of the infection.

During this phase, the immune system stimulates the constriction of blood vessels in speeding up the production of blood palettes to cover the wound and the production of inflammatory cytokines to the site of infection to fight off bacterial and viral invasion.

Most common viruses that cause infection are hepatitis A, B, and human papillomavirus (HPV) influenza. mumps, and rubella. People with a weakened immune system are susceptible to acute and chronic viral infection.

According to the article immune factor allows viral infections to become chronic by the University of Bonn, many viral diseases tend to become chronic, including infections with the HI virus. In persons affected, the immune response is not sufficient to eliminate the virus permanently".

Some researchers argued that the chronic infectious diseases may be a result of a weakened immune system which can not kill off the virus with the set period of time during the acute phase of infection, leading to the adaptation of the change, thus reducing the helper T cells in the secretion of inflammatory messengers and reduced function of the tumor necrosis factor in chronic infection compared to the acute phase of infection.

Cascara sagrada is a species of buckthorn, genus Rhamnus, belonging to the family Rhamnaceae, native to western North America.

The herbal bark has been used in traditional medicine for gastrointestinal support. and it is thought to have a laxative and natural cleansing, etc.,

The chemical constituents of Cascara Sagrada include Aloe-emodin, Anthrquinone glycosides (Barbaloin Cascarosides A, B, C and D ChrysaloinFrangul), Chrysophanol, Emodin, Heterodianthrones palmidin A, B, and C, dianthrones, Oxanthrone, Rhein, Tannins, etc.

Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of viral infection examined the effects of emodin, an active ingredient from Rheum tanguticum (R. tanguticum, one of the Chinese Rhubarb) and Cascara Sagrada against HSV infection in tissue culture cells and in a mouse model.

Emodin displayed significant inhibition of the replication of HSV-1 and HSV-2 in cell culture at the concentration of 50 μg/ml with an antiviral index of 2.07 and 3.53, respectively.

Emodin treatment also increased the survival rate of HSV-infected mice, prolonged survival time and showed higher efficacy of HSV elimination from brain, heart, liver, and ganglion, compared to the controls.

In vivo, researchers found that emodin demonstrates the antiviral activity similar to that of acyclovir, an antiviral medication.

Compared to the efficacy of antiviral activity of nucleoside analogs against herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections, injection of emodin specifically inhibited the nuclease activity of HSV-1 UL12 alkaline nuclease, which is necessary for the production of viral DNA according to the biochemical assay.

Emodin reduced plaque formation or cell-to-cell infection with an EC50 of 21.5±4.4 μm, according to the plaque reduction assay.

Emodin also inhibited the accumulation of viral nucleocapsids in the nucleus in the initiation of viral transcription and replication in a dose-dependent manner.

Dr. C-Y Hsiang and colleagues suggested that emodin is a potent anti-HSV agent via the suppression of a novel target, UL12.

Taken altogether, herbal Cascara Sagrada processed abundantly bioactive ingredient emodin may be considered a function remedy for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of viral infection, pending the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter human study.

Yoga Shows a Significant Effect on Mind-body Interventions Against the Onset of Anxiety During Pregnancy, Researchers Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Yoga may be used as a potential treatment for reduced anxiety in maternal women, a study by the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Québec suggested.
Maternal anxiety is a condition that appears during pregnancy characterized by a state of excessive uneasiness and apprehension, typically with compulsive behavior or panic attacks.

Some researchers suggested that anxiety may be attributed to the overreaction of the sympathetic nervous system which has a function to prepare our body for emergencies and the conscious or even unconscious mind in cases of a need for defense.

The reaction sympathetic nervous system causes the overproduction of certain hormones which in turn, induces the imbalance of the stress hormones in the body such as adrenaline and cortisol, and the precursor hormone DHEA, affecting a person's psychological well-being in the initiation of anxiety.

Researchers do not know why some people are susceptible to the risk of anxiety, while others do not. However, they do know certain factors such as genes inherited from the parents, family history, gender, and people with stressful and traumatic life experiences, and people who are drug abusers are associated with increased risk of anxiety.

Most symptoms of maternal anxiety include feeling unable to cope. very alone and frightened. depressed. disconnected from self and/or the baby. anxious about the baby. and seeing everything as stressful. particularly a feeling of not being able to “let go” and relax.

In some women, irreparable effects of anxiety during pregnancy can change pregnancy into an unpleasant event of women’s life, affecting some serious effects in the offspring’s health.

Yoga, is the ancient technique practice for harmonized external and internal body well-being, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement, and gesture.....

The technique has been well known for people in the Western world and some parts in Asia, due to health benefits reported by various respectable institutes' research and supported by health advocates.

In the review of literature posted in Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth Group's Trials Register (30 November 2010), MEDLINE (1950 to 30 November 2010), EMBASE (1974 to 30 November 2010), the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) (1 December 2010), ClinicalTrials.gov (December 2010) and Current Controlled Trials (1 December 2010) involving pregnant women of any age at any time from conception to one month after birth, researchers found that * In compared with usual care, yoga and other techniques with mind-body interventions in one study with 133 women expressed a positive effect on anxiety during labor decreasing anxiety at the early and middle stages of labor.

* Another study also suggested that yoga and other techniques with mind-body interventions had a positive effect on anxiety and depression in the immediate postpartum period

Dr. Marc I, the lead author said, "Mind-body interventions might benefit women's anxiety during pregnancy" and " there is some but no strong evidence for the effectiveness of mind-body interventions for the management of anxiety during pregnancy".

Even with these favorable outcomes, researchers in the review still concern of the small number of studies per intervention and to the diversity of outcome measurements with no meta-analysis.

Other, also in the review of literature from four major electronic databases: CINAHL, PubMed, PsycINFO, and EMBASE using the Following PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines with 13 publications met inclusion criteria and selected. researchers indicated that most studies expressed a generally effective in reducing anxiety in pregnant women participated in yoga class.

Not only that, Dr. Sheffield KM, the lead author said, " The use of yoga in the perinatal period shows promise in improving mental health and well-being for women and infants".

Truly, yoga meditation and mindfulness only calm the nervous system in the modulation of hormones production without inducing overexpression of certain hormones which may cause anxiety but also
bring the prenatal mother back to the present and deal with the situation in a thoughtful way.

These results may restore the feeling of joy, connection with the baby, the happiness that the baby will bring, the pleasure to have a baby, and a feeling of comfort in the belly that carries the baby, etc.

In support of the above analysis, a joint study conducted by the University of Manchester in 59 primiparous, low-risk pregnant women completed questionnaires assessing state (State-Trait Anxiety Inventory; STAI-State), trait (STAI-Trait), and pregnancy-specific anxiety (Wijma Delivery Expectancy Questionnaire; WDEQ) and depression (Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale; EPDS) before randomization (baseline) to either an 8-week course of antenatal yoga or treatment-as-usual (TAU); both groups repeated the questionnaires at follow-up, showed that
* Compared to the control group, yoga participated group in one single class showed to reduce both subjective and physiological measures of state anxiety (STAI-S and cortisol), and

* This single class-induced reduction remained through the final session of the intervention

* Yoga group also improved the reduction in the WDEQ score

After adjusting to other risk factors, researchers said, " Antenatal yoga seems to be useful for reducing women's anxieties toward childbirth and preventing increases in depressive symptomatology".

Taking all together, there is no doubt that yoga may be considered a potential and therapeutic treatment in reducing risk and symptoms and treatment of anxiety maternally.

#Fennel Exhibits Free Radical Cytotoxic and Antioxidant Activities Against the Onset of #Cancer, Scientists Show

Kyle J. Norton

Fennel may be considered a secondary theoretical and natural agent for the prevention and treatment of cancers, some scientists suggested.
Cytotoxicity is an action that can cause cell death. Substances with cytotoxic function processed the capability to induce apoptosis by binding to Fas expressed with an anti-apoptotic function to some target cells.

Some researchers suggested that some plants' pigments, including herbal medicine lipophilic secondary metabolites, process antioxidant properties in protecting healthy cells against cytotoxicity but also stimulating the expression of free radical cytotoxicity against cancer cells.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of the genus, belongings to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean.

Herbal medicine is used in traditional and herbal medicine as a warming, carminative, antispasmodic, and depressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, to regulate the menstrual cycle, and relieve PMS,...

In the study to examine cytotoxic effects of some plants selection based on existing ethnobotanical information by interviewing the local healers and testing on the murine fibrosarcoma L929sA cells and on the human breast cancer cells MDA-MB231 and MCF7, researchers found that organic extracts from fennel exert a significant activity on an IC (50) value at 24 h of 700 and 500 μg/mL, on L929sA and MCF7 cells, respectively, through their cytotoxicity.

Further analysis, researchers also discovered, the extracts with a different concentrations limit the range of genes activated by NF-κB, in the regulation of the expression of various genes by allowing the only expression of genes, that contribute to an effective immune response.

Also, in vitro, acetone extracts of F. vulgare demonstrated a strong cytotoxic effect against the kidney (Vero) cell line and an adenocarcinoma cervical cancer (HeLa) cell line.

Additionally, according to the investigation of the essential oil of fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) which is found to process a rich in lipophilic secondary metabolites, researchers found that the main components of F. vulgare oil, trans-anethole presented 36.8% in the oil demonstrated significant antioxidant activity in the protection of healthy cells and cytotoxic activity against HeLa (human cervical cancer), Caco-2 (human colorectal adenocarcinoma), MCF-7 (human breast adenocarcinoma), CCRF-CEM (human T lymphoblast leukemia) and CEM/ADR5000 (adriamycin resistant leukemia) cancer cell lines.

Moreover, at the IC50 values between 30-210 mg L-1 and thus the essential oil exhibited low cytotoxicity compared to the cytotoxic reference compound (trans-anethole).

Interestingly, in the study carried out to determine the cytotoxic effect of seven plant extracts and the isolated compounds - syringin and 4-methoxycinnamyl alcohol - on cancerous and non-cancerous cells by the University of Pretoria, researchers showed that the ethanol extract of Foeniculum vulgare exhibits the most significant toxicity with an IC50 value of 19.97 μg/mL on HeLa cells.

4-methoxycinnamyl alcohol compound isolated from fennel only showed toxicity against MCF-7, HeLa, and DU145 cancer cell lines but also inhibited all cancer cell lines with IC50 values of 14.24, 7.82, and 22.10 μg/mL

The DNA fragmentation study also revealed that the application of 4-methoxycinnamyl alcohol takes place at a concentration of 10 μg/mL after 48 h exposure.

Taken together, fennel extracts and essential oil may be considered a secondary therapeutic treatment for the prevention and treatment of cancers through its antioxidant and cytotoxicity effects.

Since all experiments were only taking place in vivo and in vitro, further data collection on large example size and multi-center studies performed in humans during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of anti-cancer possibilities.

#GreenTea's EGCG Alleviate Symptoms, And the Risk of Earlt Onset of #PolymyalgiaRheumatica (PMR) Through Their Antixodaint Activities, Researchers Find

Kyle J. Norton

Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in reducing the symptoms, risk, progression, and treatment of polymyalgia rheumatic (PMR), some scientists suggested.

Polymyalgia rheumatica is an inflammatory disease with muscle pain and stiffness, especially in the shoulders, affecting mostly older adults beyond the age of 65.

The exact causes of polymyalgia rheumatica are unknown. However, researchers do know that certain prevalent risk factors are associated with the onset of diseases, such as age, family history, gender, ethnicity, and exposure to environmental weather.

Genetic mutations inherited from the parents are also the major risk factor for the development of polymyalgia arthritis such as ICAM-1 (intercellular adhesion molecule 1), RANTES (regulated upon activation, normal T cell expressed, and presumably secreted).

It is important to know that Giant cell arteritis (GCA) (temporal arteritis) and polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) share a common identity, frequently related conditions in people generally over 50 years of age, according to the Dr. Miguel A Gonzalez-Gay in the study of " Genetic epidemiology: Giant cell arteritis and polymyalgia rheumatica".

Symptoms of PMR are depending on the severity of the condition, including aches or pain in shoulders, neck, upper arms, buttocks, hips, or thighs, and stiffness in affected areas.

People with PMR also experience pain in the morning or after being inactive for a time, limited range of motion in the affected areas.

If you have some of the above symptoms, please check with your doctor to rule out the PMR possibility.

Green tea is a precious drink that processed a  number of health benefits and is known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.

In an animal study of inflammatory diseases induced by injection of LPS, researchers found that the application of green tea bioactive polyphenols EGCG improves the antioxidant status of the host and decreases the production of inflammatory factors, including PMR through its antioxidant properties.

Further analysis suggested that application of EGCG reduced symptoms of inflammation such as pain, tension, stiffness, and swelling of the infectious site without affecting the function of the immune system in the protection against microorganisms invasion through inhibiting over-expression of tumor necrosis alpha(TNF-α) involved in the systematic inflammatory response to the acute phase of infection.

The bioactive compound also inhibited reactive oxygen species (ROS) in stimulating the production of inflammatory cytokines by stopping the free radicals chain reactions that facilitate inflammation and precipitate skeletal muscle dysfunction and degradation by infiltrating immune cells to induce direct injury to muscle tissue.

In fact, the overproduction of ROS increased expression of mitochondria, NAD(P)H oxidases, xanthine oxidoreductases, and nitric oxide synthases can cause an imbalance of the free radicals and antioxidant ratio, in orchestrated oxidative stress to muscle cells.

Further evaluation suggested that green tea EGCG also reduced the expression of interleukin 6 (IL-6), with function in response to infections and tissue injuries.

Long-term overproduction of IL 6 due to the duo factors as a pro and anti-inflammatory protein may increase high-level concentrations of serum amyloid A (SAA), which has been found to induce serious complications of several chronic inflammatory diseases through the generated and deposited amyloid A amyloidosis into the extracellular space in an abnormal, insoluble, fibrillar form,

Moreover, EGCG also attenuated levels of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) in the regulation of innate and adaptive immune functions and served as a pivotal mediator of inflammatory responses through activation of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) in promoting muscle wasting, leading to muscle atrophy in the induction of pain and stiffness and swelling.

Importantly, the application of green tea EGCG enhanced the natural antioxidant enzymes in the host such as glutathione, an antioxidant enzyme produced naturally found in every cell and tissue of the body.

These actions together with antioxidants initiated by injection of green tea EGCG stimulated cell regeneration, preserved the muscle cells and tissues, and prevented muscle tension to precipitate polymyalgia arthritis.

A deficiency of glutathione levels was found to associate with the early onset of polymyalgia rheumatica, inducing symptoms of pain, stiffness, achiness, fatigue, and fever.

Differentiation of the above was supported by conventional medicine corticosteroids, a powerful anti-inflammatory drug with the function to target pro-inflammation cytokines in the relieved stiffness and pain in patients with polymyalgia arthritis.

Taken together, green tea and its bioactive polyphenols EGCG may be considered a functional food for alleviating symptoms, risk, progression, and treatment of polymyalgia rheumatica(PMR).

However, ingestion of green tea supplements should be taken with extreme care as acute liver toxicity has been reported in several medical literature.

#Coffee Exhibits the Function of Enzymes Involved in Xenobiotic Detoxification Processes and Primary Hepatocytes, Scientists Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee intake may have a profound effect in protecting the human healthy cell against mutagens in alternating cell DNA transcripts, some studies suggested.
Mutagenicity is an action characterized by the alternation of the DNA chemically or physically.

In most cases, mutagenicity, in human expressed by mutagens are associated with the onset of irregular cell growth, causing various types of cancer.

Coffee, second to green tea, is a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, made from roasted beans from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

In the study of caffeine effect in mutagenesis, coffee and caffeine showed a significant effect in gene mutation in bacteria and fungi, but in high concentrations, they can also express a similar mutagenic influence to mammalian cells.

In other words, the application of coffee and caffeine can induce a change of the DNA of bacteria, viruses, fungi and human cultured cells

In the microbial environment, the change of DNA sometimes can increase the survival of the microorganisms in adapting to the change of environment. The results can make them more lethal than the previous form.

The findings suggested the duo effect of coffee and caffeine, on one hand, inhibited the gene mutation but on the hand displayed a significant mutagenic DNA damage to living organisms, but less in the human even with a moderated drinking habit.

Also in bacterial experiments, according to the observation from bacteria mutation assays, trigonelline, found in caffeine alone or in combination with most of the single amino acids found in caffeine and mixtures of amino acids, showed potent mutagenic activity in Salmonella typhimurium strains.

The mutagenic activity of caffeine can be observed through its potentiation in inducing chromosomal aberrations by transforming sublethal damage of mutagenic agents into lethal damage.

Furthermore, the study also revealed that chemically reactive components such as aliphatic dicarbonyls from caffeine were some of the culprits attributed to this mutagenic exhibition.

But conversely, according to the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Science, intake of caffeinated coffee demonstrated a protective effect in inhibiting these mutagenic activities through their' numerous chemicals depending on the time consumption in the presence of the mutagenic agent.

Dr. Wu X, the lead author said, "Trigonelline and amino acids are natural components in green coffee beans. Model systems mimicking coffee roasting were used to produce heated samples of trigonelline, amino acids, and glucose".

Additionally, according to the coffee producing company, Nestlé Research Center, coffee intake has shown a strong effect in the exhibition of the function of enzymes involved in xenobiotic detoxification processes and primary hepatocytes.

In animal study, the experiment also found that coffee induces the mRNA and protein expression of enzymes involved in the promotion of cellular antioxidant defenses.

More importantly, coffee also exhibited chemoprotective effects of against toxic Aflatoxin B1 in the induction of genotoxicity in either human liver cell line and primary hepatocytes.

The in-depth comparison of all studies above suggested caffeine has an effect in the contribution of gene mutation in microorganisms, while intake of caffeinated coffee expresses an opposite effect in the protection of gene in human.

Taking all together, caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee may be considered a functional beverage for protection of our body cells against alternation of DNA transcription in the initiation of cancers.

#Herbal #CascaraSagrada Inhibits #Asthma and #AsthmaticAttacks by Reducing Expression of Proteins Associated With Immune Response

Kyle J. Norton

Herbal Cascara Sagrada may have a potential and positive effect on reducing the risk and treatment of asthma, according to studies.
Asthma is a medical condition caused by the long-term inflammation of the airways of the lungs with persistent recurring symptoms.

The most common symptoms of asthma including episodes of wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and particularly, shortness of breath can be triggered by exposure to irritants and allergens.

Other airborne substances, such as pollen, dust mites, mold spores, pet dander, or particles of cockroach waste and the common cold are also found to trigger symptoms of the condition.

Epidemiological studies, family history, viral respiratory infections, smoking, exposure to irritants, environmental air pollution, and allergy are some most common prevalent risk factors of the disease.

However, out of all the risk factors, some researchers suggested that widespread obesity is one of the common causes of asthma in the Western world.

Dr. E. Rand Sutherland, at the National Jewish Medical and Research Center and the University of Colorado, said, " Data from the 1999-2002 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) indicate that 65 percent of U.S. adults ≥ 20 years of age are overweight or obese [41], a 10% increase when compared with the 1988-94 period".

And, "Although asthma affects a smaller proportion of the U.S. population than does obesity, and while recent data suggest asthma prevalence may not be increasing as rapidly as in the past, the age-adjusted asthma prevalence of 7.9% reported based on 2005 National Health Interview Survey data [1] is more than twice that reported in 1984-1986 National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey data".

These results provided strong evidence to link the convergence of secular trends of the increased prevalence of both obesity and asthma.

Cascara sagrada is a species of buckthorn, genus Rhamnus, belonging to the family Rhamnaceae, native to western North America.

The herbal bark has been used in traditional medicine for gastrointestinal support. and it is thought to have a laxative and natural cleansing, etc.

Besides the main compound of anthraquinones, other compounds of herbal Cascara Sagrada include anthraquinone glycosides, (emodin, frangulin, iso-emodin, aloe-emodin, and chrysophanol), rhein, aloin, malic acid, tannic acid, cascarosides A, B, C, and D, and hydroxy anthracene derivatives (HAD), etc.

Scientists on finding a natural anti-asthma compound with no side effects examined the anti-inflammatory effects of emodin (1,3,8-trihydroxy-6-methylanthraquinone), a natural occurring anthraquinone derivative isolated from roots and barks of numerous plants, such as herbal Cascara Sagrada, molds, and lichens.

Injection of emodin displayed significant activity in the inhibition of asthma symptoms through anti-inflammatory effects.

In order to reveal more inflammation related to the effects of herbal Cascara Sagrada against asthma, researchers examined anthraquinone, another bioactive compound isolated from herbal medicine.

In allergic mice infected with RV1B inducing an exacerbation, anthraquinone treatment reduced the expression of proteins associated with the immune response and cellular and molecular mechanisms driving asthma pathophysiology.

Furthermore, injection of the bioactive compound also exerted a decrease of airway inflammation involved in stimulating the vascular angiogenesis, permeability, and remodeling and ameliorating the allergen- and RV-induced airway hyperreactivity.

Moreover, Anthraquinones also inhibited airway inflammation by decreasing the white blood cell and cytokine/chemokine expression, mucus hypersecretion, and protein associated with the overexpression of the immune response.

Additionally, anthraquinones also boosted the cytokines which play a crucial role in protecting the airway by initiating inflammatory responses by inducing recruitment and activation of immune cells.

Dr. and colleagues wrote in the final report, "Non-cytotoxic anthraquinone derivatives may be of therapeutic benefit for the treatment of severe and RV-induced asthma".

Taken altogether, herbal Cascara Sagrada may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of asthma.

#Carrots Process Anti Gartric and Prostate Cancer Properties, According to Clinical Trials

Carrots, the root veggie may have a potential and positive effect in blocking the proliferation of cancer cells, some scientists suggested.
Cancer is a class of chronic and medical diseases characterized by irregular and disordered cell growth in one or some tissue and organs in the body.

Most cancers start from the inner lining of the tissue of the organs and then slowly spread to the deeper parts of the infected organs. At the advanced stage, most malignant cancer cells can travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy tissue and organs.

Most cancer diagnosed at the early have a 100% 5 years survival rate.

According to the statistic provided by the Canadian public health service, during their lifetime, nearly 1 in 2 Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer, and 1 in 4 will die from the disease.

Lung, colorectal, breast, and prostate cancers account for half of all cancers diagnosed in Canada and over 25% of all cancer deaths in Canada are due to lung cancer.

The causes of cancers are unknown, however, scientists around the world agreed that there are several risk factors such as gene mutations inherited from the parents and acquired gene mutations caused by smoking, radiation, viruses, chemicals carcinogens, obesity, hormones, chronic inflammation, and physical inactivity are associated to the early onset of cancer.

Carrot, a root vegetable with an orange color is a subspecies of Daucus carota, belonging to the family Apiaceae, native to Asia and Europe.

In the investigation of the claim of Lebanese folk medicine that Daucus carota, also known as wild carrot has a potency for the treatment of various types of cancer, researchers at the Lebanese American University, conducted an experience to identify the major compound responsible for the anti-cancer activity of DCOE.

β-2-himachalen-6-ol, a novel sesquiterpene unique to β-2-Himachalen-6-ol isolated from the Lebanese wild carrot demonstrated potent anti-cancer activity against B16F-10, Caco-2, MB-MDA-231, A549, and SF-268 cancer cells (IC50 13-4µg/ml; 58-18µM), and SF-268 cells.

Furthermore, the sesquiterpene was shown to induce cell death through apoptosis (flow cytometry), decrease 2D cell motility (wound healing assay) and 3D invasion, as well as increase cell adhesion in SF-268 cells.

Additionally, β-2-himachalen-6-ol showed very low toxicity.

These results suggested that wild carrot β-2-himachalen-6-ol may have a potential multi-mechanistic chemotherapeutic drug with high potency and safety.

Moreover, the concerns about the mortality rate caused by gastric cancer, researchers at the Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences conducted a review by searching multiple databases including PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, ScienceDirect, and Persian databases like Scientific Information Database (SID) and IranMedx to determine the relationship between carrot consumption and gastric cancer.

Out of 81 articles found in the databases, only 5 studies that satisfied the medical guidelines and criteria were included in the review. after taking into account co and confounders, researchers found that

* Intake of carrots regularly reduced the risk of gastric cancer by 26%.

* There is an inverse relationship between the consumption of carrots and the risk of gastric cancer.

More interestingly, regarding the inconsistent results. associated with carrot intake and prostate cancer risk, researchers at Zhejiang University also launched a review by searching the databases of PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, Web of Science, the Cochrane Register, and the Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure to determine whether the intake of carrots may reduce the risk of prostate cancer.

In the final report, researchers found that
* Intake of carrots is associated with a significantly decreased risk of prostate cancer with the odds ratio of 0.82 which is consistent with the Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences study.

* For each serving per week or 10 g per day increment of carrot intake, the odds ratio of the risk of prostate cancer was 0.95, according to the dose-response meta-analysis.

The findings indicated that the intake of carrots may have a potential effect in reducing the risk of the onset of cancers.

However, due to the limited number of cohort studies and substantial heterogeneity observed between studies in this meta-analysis, further well-designed prospective studies are warranted to confirm the findings from the studies.
