#FennelExtract Inhibits Neurotoxicity Against The Onset of Cognitive Impairment, Scientists Suggest

Fennel may process a sustainable and therapeutic effect in enhancing cognitive functions, some scientists suggested.
Cognitive function is a mental process of the brain, intending to acquire knowledge by accumulating information through reasoning, memory, attention, and language, regardless of circumstances.

On the other hand, cognitive impairment, depending on the severity is a condition in which the infected person has trouble remembering, learning new things, concentrating, or making decisions that affect the quality of their everyday life.


In the elderly, most cases of cognitive impairment are associated with neurodegenerative diseases and long-term use of medication, including Alzheimer's disease.


However, malnutrition, hormone imbalance such as thyroid hormone, mental illness, and substance abuse, particularly, in brain damage or injury are some of the major and prevalent risk factors that can cause the early onset of cognitive impairment.


Some researchers suggested that for people who have metabolic syndrome (abnormally high blood pressure, high blood sugar, obesity, and abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride levels), mental illness, and previously disturbed state of mind due to fever, intoxication is also at a higher risk of the condition develops.


Dr. Fernando Gómez-Pinilla, in the study of the effects of nutrients on brain function, wrote. "diets that are high in saturated fat are becoming notorious for reducing molecular substrates that support cognitive processing and increasing the risk of neurological dysfunction in both humans and animals"

And, Dr. Alan J. Gow, the lead scientist, in the study of the effects of lifestyle on cognitive impairment, said, " Lifestyle factors, particularly those which are malleable across the life course, may be highly informative for the development of interventions to reduce or delay age-related cognitive decline".


These explanations strongly agree that following a healthy diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables and less saturated and trans fat, processed meat, refined products,...... salt, and sugar, and a lifestyle with moderate exercise may have a significant effect in protecting the brain neurons against the onset of cognitive impairment.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of the genus, belonging to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean.

Anethole, the main fragrance and bioactive compound of fennel, in the study of 20 other plant species was found to process nootropic activity in protecting the degeneration of the neurons, including diseases associated with a decline in cognitive abilities such as Alzheimer's disease through its anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective expression.

In the inflammatory expression, the application of anethole exerted a significant effect in mediated NF-kB in the systematic inflammatory response induced by transcription of proinflammatory genes and TNF-α signaling in the production of inflammatory factors in the acute phase of infection.

The initiation of the pro-inflammatory cytokine in the case of acute infection is a natural defense of the immune response to protect the injured tissue against the invasion of bacteria and viruses. However, overexpression of inflammatory factors may also catalyze tissue damage and cause neuron cell death.

From an oxidative perspective, the application of anethole in the tested model also demonstrated a strong effect in inhibiting reactive oxygen species ROS which cause the cytotoxicity to neuron through its antioxidant and stimulated the production of the host antioxidant defense.


Injection of anethole also rebalanced the ratio of levels of free radicals and antioxidants, thus reducing the risk of the initiated production of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the precipitation of the death of the brain cell that controls memory or other cognitive functions.

Furthermore, in the evaluated fennel effect in Alzheimer's disease, a neurodegenerative disorder associated with a decline in cognitive abilities, researchers found that fennel intake exerts a strong neuroprotective effect in protecting against progressive degeneration.

The methanol extract of the whole plant of F. vulgare administered for eight successive days ameliorated the deficit of memory caused by brain damage, disease, or psychological trauma induced by scopolamine and aging-induced memory deficits in mice.

In acetylcholinesterase AChE-induced neurotoxicity in mice, the application of extract also increased step-down latency and reserved the neuron damage caused by acetylcholinesterase AChE toxicity.

Dr. Preksha Dwivedi, the lead author, after taking into account other co and confounders said, "Foeniculum vulgare Linn. The extract is used as a nootropic and anticholinesterase agent in mice. F. vulgare extract increased step-down latency and acetylcholinesterase inhibition in mice significantly. F. vulgare is employed in the treatment of cognitive disorders such as dementia and Alzheimer's disease".

Taken together, fennel, fennel extracts, or its bioactive anethole may be considered a functional food for enhancing memory or other cognitive functions through its neuroprotective and nootropic activity. However, intake of fennel extracts should be taken with extreme care in the prevention of acute liver toxicity.

Scientists may have found a sweet functional food that processes the potential for the prevention and treatment of cancer, some studies suggested.
Cancers are a group of chronic diseases, caused by cell growth and uncontrollably in some specific tissues and organs.

Most primary cancers start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of tissue caused by the alternation of DNA.

At the later stage, after penetrating deep into the tissue of the infected organs, most primary cancers can travel a distance away from the original site to damage other healthy tissue and organs.

As they grow large enough, they can also suppress the nearby tissue and nerve cells, causing severe pain and localized symptoms.

Researchers do not know the exact causes of colon cancer. Neither do they know why some people have the same health conditions, diet patterns ethnicity, and family history, some are susceptible to the early onset of the diseases, while many others are not.

The most common risk factors, epidemiologically are associated with the types of cancer. The National Cancer Institute suggested that aging, tobacco, long-term sun and radiation exposure, chemicals and other substances, some viruses and bacteria, certain hormones, family history of cancer, alcohol, poor diet, lack of physical activity, or being overweight are the common causes of cancer.

In the challenges, the idea that cancer cannot be prevented among older adults, researchers at the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion launched a study by examining different aspects of the relationship between age and cancer said, "Although the sequential patterns of aging cannot be changed, several age-related factors that contribute to disease risk can be".

What are the age-related factors that contribute to cancer changes? researchers continued. "For most adults, age is coincidentally associated with preventable chronic conditions, avoidable exposures, and modifiable risk behaviors that are causally associated with cancer", and "current evidence suggests that for most adults, cancer does not have to be an inevitable consequence of growing older. Interventions that support healthy environments, help people manage chronic conditions, and promote healthy behaviors may help people make a healthier transition from midlife to older age and reduce the likelihood of developing cancer:

These results further emphasized the need to prevent chronic diseases support a healthy environment and promote a healthy lifestyle in the transition from midlife to the older age are the most important factors that can reduce substantially the risk of cancer.

To find a natural ingredient without side effects for the treatment of colon cancer, researchers at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, launched an investigation to examine the anti-tumor and anti-inflammation properties of crude ginger extract and Gelam honey against many types of cancer, including colorectal cancer.

The cells used in the experiment were divided into 4 groups: the first group represented HT29 cells without treatment, the second and third groups were cells treated singly with either ginger or Gelam honey, respectively, and the last group represented cells treated with ginger and Gelam honey combined.

Combined ginger and Gelam honey treatment stimulated the early cell death response by enhancing the function of proteins associated with programming cell death, namely, the caspase 9 and IκB genes, and inhibiting the function of proteins associated with cell proliferation.

The IC50 of ginger and Gelam honey alone were 5.2 mg/ml and 80 mg/ml, respectively also demonstrated similar efficacy as the IC50 of the combination treatment of 3 mg/ml of ginger plus 27 mg/ml of Gelam honey.

These results suggest ginger and Gelam honey used alone or in combination may be an effective chemopreventive and therapeutic strategy for inducing the death of colon cancer cells.


Further differentiation of the anti-proliferative effects of ginger and Gelam honey and their efficacy in enhancing the anti-cancer effects of 5-FU (5-fluorouracil) against a colorectal cancer cell line, HCT 116. researchers showed that
* Ginger (IC50 of 3mg/mL) is more potent than Gelam honey (IC50 of 75 mg/mL) in inhibiting the growth of HCT 116 cells.

* Combined treatment (35 mg/mL) of the two compounds (3mg/mL ginger+75 mg/mL Gelam honey) synergistically lowered the IC50 of Gelam, honey, to 22 mg/mL without reducing the inhibitory effect against colon cancer cell line.

* Gelam honey markedly enhanced 5-FU inhibiting effects on the growth of HCT 116 cells.

Subsequent analysis on the induction of cellular apoptosis also suggested the individual treatment of ginger and Gelam honey produced higher apoptosis compared to 5-FU alone.

These results once again suggested that Gelam honey and ginger extract used alone or in combination could potentially enhance the chemotherapeutic effect of 5-FU against colorectal cancer.

Taken altogether, honey used alone or combined with ginger might process significant and profound effects in reducing the risk of colon cancer and combined with primary therapy for the treatment of colon cancer.

However, further data collection large example size and multi-center studies performed with human consumption of whole food or its bioactive compounds during the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of honey anti-cancer possibilities.

The liver is the largest internal organ found in the human which plays an essential role in filtering the blood from the digestive system before passing it to other parts of the body.

The liver also produces cholesterol, a waxy substance that aids digestion, builds cell membranes and produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.

Liver disease is a class of medical conditions characterized by reducing partly or completely the function of the liver, including liver failure.


A fatty liver is a liver condition associated with the accumulation of excess fat in the liver.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver (NAFL) is the early stage of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) caused by the accumulation of fat in the liver, other than excessive use of alcohol.

Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a type of inflammatory non-alcoholic fatty liver disease caused by excessive fat accumulated in the liver.

Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is asymptomatic until the condition is developed into cirrhosis, the condition that causes advanced liver scars, and reduces the performance of the liver.

In other words, if more than 5% – 10% percent of your liver’s weight is fat, you have a fatty liver (steatosis).
The prevalence rate of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) among the more affluent regions of China, is approximately 15%. The number may decrease substantially if the poor rural populations where obesity is non-existence are also taken into account.

In the US, over 100 million people have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and the condition has doubled over the past 20 years. Today, the disease is also prevalent in liver disease in children.

Most people at the early stage of NAFLD are asymptomatic. However, as the disease progresses into the later stage, most patients experience symptoms of right upper abdominal discomfort, fatigue, and/or malaise, and jaundice(20) with yellowing of the skin and eyes.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belonging to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color with a mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant from the continent of Europe.

To find a natural food for the prevention and treatment of liver diseases, researchers examined the effect of dietary broccoli protects against fatty liver development.

The study included male 15-day-old C57BL/6J mice that were given DEN and placed on a Western or Western+10% Broccoli diet from the age of 4 weeks through 7 months. before exposure to the hepatocarcinogen diethylnitrosamine (DEN).

According to the results of the analysis,* Dietary broccoli decreased hepatic triacylglycerols, NAFLD, liver damage, and tumor necrosis factor by month 5 without changing body weight or relative liver weight induced by hepatocarcinogen diethylnitrosamine (DEN).

* However, broccoli feeding did not have low liver carcinogenesis, observed in 100% of tested mice.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, " We conclude that broccoli, a good source of sulforaphane, slows the progression of hepatic lipidosis, but not tumourigenesis in this robust model".

Taken together, broccoli may be considered functional food for the prevention of fatty liver, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Hypertension, a condition associated with the cluster of metabolic syndrome is a medical condition associated with abnormally high blood pressure.

Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood and changes constantly depending on activity. However, persistent hypertension due to poor management over time can lead to diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

According to the statistics provided by the American Heart Association., nearly half of all adults in the United States are living with high blood pressure, or 1 in 3 Americans are hypertensive.

Hypertension is a leading risk factor of heart disease and stroke that cause most death in the US

The most common prevalent factors associated with the condition onset are family history, aging, being male, being overweight or obese, ethnicity, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet, and medical conditions such as chronic kidney disease.


Believe it or not, excessive alcohol drinking is also one of the major causes besides obesity in elevating the syndrome onset.

Depending on the levels of blood pressure, most people with mild hypertension are asymptomatic. However, unmanaged high blood pressure can induce complications of heart attack or stroke, heart failure, weakened and narrowed blood vessels, metabolic syndrome, and trouble with memory or understanding,

In severe cases, chronic hypertension can lead to dementia.

Conventionally, blood pressure medications have been found to prevent many deaths from heart disease and stroke over the past 30 years, however, long-term intake of such medications has caused many side effects such as damaging the kidney.

Some researchers suggested by making lifestyle changes, maintaining an ideal weight and diet with low salt, you could do just fine without the drugs.

Dr. Myung Hwa Yang wrote, "healthy eating, weight management, and appropriate physical activity are essential for the management of high blood pressure in adults since these lifestyle management have the potential to improve blood pressure control and even reduce the need for medication.23)"

"Our findings indicate that to achieve better rates of blood pressure control, the clinician should advise lifestyle modifications such as adequate physical activity and low salt intake, in addition to prescribing medication and monitoring the patient for hypertension control".

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, a closely related to garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.


Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild, or sweet.

In finding a potent ingredient that processes cardioprotection researchers examined the effects of onion on blood pressure in N(G)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) induced-hypertensive rats and stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSP).

The vivo study included male 6-weeks-old Sprague-Dawley rats induced-hypertensive to receive tap water containing L-NAME of a concentration of 50 mg/kg BW/day and dried onion at 5%.

Onion application showed significant anti-hypertensive activity on the L-NAME induced-hypertensive rats and the SHRSP by decreasing the thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) associated with lipid peroxidation in blood plasma.

Furthermore, nitrate/nitrite (products of nitric oxide (NO)) involved in blood vessel relaxation excreted in urine and the NO synthase (NOS) associated with vascular tone activity in the kidneys in SHRSP were also increased by the onion injection.

Interestingly, the efficacy of onion that inhibits the onset of high blood pressure was not found similar to those in the L-NAME-induced hypertensive rats such as increasing the levels of NOS.


More precisely, onion promoted hypotension in L-NAME treated rats without inhibiting of NOS activity by L-NAME, and decreased nitrate/nitrite excretion in urine may be associated with only the promotion of antioxidant activity

Dr. Sakai Y, the lead scientist said, "The mechanism of the antihypertensive effect of onion probably involves the increased saving of NO by the antioxidative activity of onion in L-NAME induced-hypertensive rats".


Taken together, onion may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of hypertension, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Out of many prevalent factors that cause the onset of the unbalanced ratio of gut microbiota, some researchers suggested that the Western diet may have negatively influenced the overgrowth of bad microorganisms in the gut.

Dr. Marit K. Zinöcker, the lead scientist wrote, "Western diet promotes inflammation that arises from both structural and behavioral changes in the resident microbiome"

And, "The environment created in the gut by ultra-processed foods, a hallmark of the Western diet, is an evolutionarily unique selection ground for microbes that can promote diverse forms of inflammatory disease".


The cucumber plant is a species of Cucumis Sativus, belonging to the family Cucurbitaceae and native to Western Asia. It is a creeping vine with roots in the ground and grows with the support of frames.

To find a natural compound that enhances the gut microbiome composition, researchers compared the effects of carrot, cucumber, and broccoli seed flour extracts with 50% acetone on gut microbiota modulating capacity.

In vitro, all three seed flour extracts enhanced the total number of gut bacteria and altered the abundance of specific bacterial phylum or genera.


In other words, cucumber showed a potential effect to improve the ratio of gut microbiota in the flavor of the "good" bacteria, similar to those of carrot and broccoli.


In J774A.1 cells, cucumber also exerted a similar activity by protecting the microbiota that exhibits anti-inflammatory activity by suppressing LPS-induced production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as IL-1β and COX-2 mRNA expressions.

Furthermore, in obesity-induced progression of metabolic disorders, especially type 2 diabetes (T2DM), cucumber not only improved IR in obese mice and relieved inflammation in adipose tissue and blood but also enhanced the microbiota composition ratios.


More precisely, cucumber improved the ratio of gut microbiome composition by promoting IR and reducing inflammation.

Taken together, cucumber may be used for the improvement of gut microbiota, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Lycopene Inhibits Parameters that Cause the #KidneyDisease, Researchers Show

The kidneys are a pair of kidney-shaped organs located on either side of your spine with a function to filter out the wastes from the blood before passing the wastes through urinary secretion.
Besides being accompanied by the liver and skin to form a detox system in the body, the kidneys also process significant effects that maintain the body's fluid balance and regulate the production of red blood cells and high blood pressure.

Kidney damage can be acute such as an overdose of toxin or chronic. Acute kidney diseases can be cured if the underlying cause is found.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a slow and progressive disease that can lead to kidney failure over time.

CKD can cause dangerous levels of fluid, electrolytes, and wastes to build up in the body.

According to statistics, approximately 14 percent of the US general population suffers from CKD. More than 661,000 Americans are living with kidney failure, inclduing 468,000 individuals on dialysis.

People with reduced kidney function do not experience any symptoms until the advanced stage. In other words, kidney disease in the advanced stage can lead to dangerous levels of fluid, electrolytes, and building toxins in the body.

Out of many risk factors associated with CKD, some researchers suggest high blood pressure is one most prevalent factors found in most patients.

In this advanced stage, patients also experience symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort, weakness,
sleep problems, changes in urination, decreased mental sharpness, muscle twitches and cramps, and swelling of feet and ankles, particularly persistent itching.


Some researchers suggest high blood pressure is one of the major causes of CKD.

The Natural Kidney Foundation wrote, "More than half the people with chronic kidney disease (CKD) have high blood pressure. High blood pressure increases the chance that kidney disease will get worse"

And "Following your treatment plan carefully and keeping your blood pressure under control can help to prevent these complications".

Lycopene is a phytochemical found in tomatoes in the class of carotenoids, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world's diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.

On finding a potent ingredient for the protection of kidney damage, researchers examined the effect of lycopene on the nephrotoxicity of deltamethrin.

The study included male albino rats that were divided into four groups with animals each: group I served as control, which received a standard diet; Group II received oral administration of deltamethrin (1.28 mg/kg per day) for 30 days; group III received both deltamethrin and lycopene (1 mg/kg per day); group IV received lycopene (1 mg/kg per day).

According to the results at the end of the experiment, deltamethrin treated group not only showed significantly increased expression of the pro-inflammatory cytokine, TNF-α but also caused mild necrotic changes of the kidney associated with localized cell death due to interruption of the blood supply.

Renal proximal tubules in the deltamethrin-treated group also showed an increased number and irregular shape of mitochondria causing the reduced function of the cell in the kidney to take nutrients from the cell break it down and turn it into energy.

Vacuolar degeneration in the epithelial cells, increased number of lysosomes, and loss of apical microvilli associated with the reduced function of kidney cells in the absorptive and secretory function may lead to the decrease of the detoxed function of the kidney.

Moreover, focal segmental thickening and the duplication of the glomerular basement membrane and podocyte changes are involved in kidney damage. were also found in the deltamethrin-treated group.

Pretreatment of lycopene demonstrated a strong effect either restoring the kidney tissue damage or inhibiting the parameters that cause the kidney disease.


Based on the findings, researchers said, "Histopathological and ultrastructural study showed some protective effect of lycopene on kidney tissues".

Taken together, lycopene found in tomatoes may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of kidney damage, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Garlic-Age-#Extract and Its #Allicin Exert a Strong Endogenous Antioxidant Defenses in Hippocampus Associated with #Cognitive Impaire, Researchers Suggest

Allicin, a bioactive and organosulfur compound may have a profound effect in improving the cognitive function of the elderly, some scientists suggested.

Cognitive activity is a long-term process of reasoning, memory, attention, and language and information accumulated that leads to knowledge.

In the elderly, the causes of cognitive dysfunction are associated with a set of factors, including medication side effects, metabolic and/or endocrine derangements due to aging, delirium due to intercurrent illness, depression, and dementia.

Dr. Ian M. Deutchki, MD University of Rochester, in the article What’s causing my older patient’s cognitive decline? wrote, "n primary care settings, when patients complain of memory loss, there is a 20% to 30% chance they will be found to have a mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or some level of dementia" and "Remote memory, semantic memory (factual information), and procedural memory (knowledge of skills and procedures) tend to remain intact with aging.4 Short-term memory (simple maintenance of information over a short period) shows little change with aging. However, working memory, which requires the manipulation of in decline".

Some researchers suggested besides the correlated factors of aging in the risk of cognitive decline, a healthy diet, and lifestyle accompanied by physical inactivity are also some of the risk factors that have a significant effect on the contribution of cognitive decline.

Dr. P.J. Smith, the lead author at the Duke University Medical Center, in the concerns of cognitive decline, an increasingly important public health problem, with more than 100 million adults worldwide associated with a change of lifestyle said, "Lifestyle factors including dietary patterns, may be important in the prevention of cognitive decline and dementia in later life" and "antioxidants, fatty acids, and B vitamins are associated with better cognitive functioning"

This conclusion suggested that following a healthy diet pattern, lifestyle and moderate exercise before the onset of the syndrome is one of the best methods in the prevention of neurodegenerative diseases in later life.

In elderly with cognitive decline, Dr. María Alicia Camina suggested malnutrition is a highly prevalent geriatric syndrome in the elderly with dementia, especially in institutionalized patients and in subjects in advanced stages of the illness.

Therefore by changing the pattern of diet that targets malnutrition in the elderly, through nutritional screening and a complete nutritional assessment, the progression of cognitive decline in the elderly can be slowed down.

Allicin is a phytochemical containing sulfur in the class of organosulfur compounds, found abundantly in onion and garlic.

Dr. Li XH, the lead scientist in the research program at the Medicine of Jishou University in reaffirming the effect of allicin on the learning and memory abilities in the course of normal aging cognitive abilities associated with the Nrf2 expression in the decline with aging launched an investigation to assess the effects of allicin on endogenous antioxidant defenses in hippocampus of a cognitively impaired aged mouse.


The organosulfur compounds, allicin activated Nrf2 during the application process by donating an electron pair to an electrophile to form a chemical bond in relation to a reaction through its electrophil·ic effect.

Treatment of allicin significantly through the expression of Nrf2 antioxidant signaling pathways ameliorated aging-induced cognitive dysfunction in the tested aged mouse.

The Nrf2 antioxidant signaling pathways are master mediators of antioxidant and detoxification responses and regulators of the cellular redox state that protect us from pathologies that are caused or exacerbated by oxidative stress in the induction of aging-related diseases, including cognitive decline.

Furthermore, antioxidant also plays an important role in metabolic regulation and their interaction with central signaling systems that respond to nutritional inputs. These results have a strong impact on the theory associated with malnutritional effects that cause the onset of neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's disease in the elderly.

In the final report of the experiment, the researchers wrote, "Allicin could be recommended as a possible candidate for the prevention and therapy of cognitive deficits in aging and Alzheimer's disease".

In the further differentiation of the oxidative modification of DNA, proteins, and lipids associated with reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the initiation of aging and disease, including cardiovascular, neurodegenerative and inflammatory diseases and cancer, researchers showed
* Extracts of aged garlic extract (AGE) contain antioxidant phytochemical allicin exerts a protective activity against oxidant damage.

* Up to 20 months of garlic-aged extract, creates antioxidant properties that inhibit the unstable free radicals with antioxidant activity, such as allicin, that lead to stable and highly bioavailable water-soluble organosulfur compounds.

* Allicin and other compounds found in AGE inhibited the overexpression of ROS by enhancing the cellular antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase, and increasing glutathione in the cells.


* The chemical ingredients of the AGE also inhibit lipid peroxidation by reducing ischemia/reperfusion damage and inhibiting oxidative modification of LDL, thus protecting endothelial cells from injury by the oxidized molecules, which contributes to atherosclerosis.

More importantly, Allicin and compounds in the AGE showed the ability to protect against oxidant-induced disease, acute damage from aging, radiation and chemical exposure, and long-term toxic damage.

Taken together, Allicin, the major bioactive compound found in garlic and onion may be considered a functional supplement for the prevention of cognitive decline and an adjunct therapy with conventional medicine to delay the progression of neurodegenerative diseases in the elderly.
