#Lycopene Inhibits Parameters that Cause the #KidneyDisease, Researchers Show

Kyle J. Norton

The kidneys are a pair of kidney-shaped organs located on either side of your spine with a function to filter out the wastes from the blood before passing the wastes through urinary secretion.
Besides being accompanied by the liver and skin to form a detox system in the body, the kidneys also process significant effects that maintain the body's fluid balance and regulate the production of red blood cells and high blood pressure.

Kidney damage can be acute such as an overdose of toxin or chronic. Acute kidney diseases can be cured if the underlying cause is found.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a slow and progressive disease that can lead to kidney failure over time.

CKD can cause dangerous levels of fluid, electrolytes, and wastes to build up in the body.

According to statistics, approximately 14 percent of the US general population suffers from CKD. More than 661,000 Americans are living with kidney failure, inclduing 468,000 individuals on dialysis.

People with reduced kidney function do not experience any symptoms until the advanced stage. In other words, kidney disease in the advanced stage can lead to dangerous levels of fluid, electrolytes, and building toxins in the body.

Out of many risk factors associated with CKD, some researchers suggest high blood pressure is one most prevalent factors found in most patients.

In this advanced stage, patients also experience symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort, weakness,
sleep problems, changes in urination, decreased mental sharpness, muscle twitches and cramps, and swelling of feet and ankles, particularly persistent itching.

Some researchers suggest high blood pressure is one of the major causes of CKD.

The Natural Kidney Foundation wrote, "More than half the people with chronic kidney disease (CKD) have high blood pressure. High blood pressure increases the chance that kidney disease will get worse"

And "Following your treatment plan carefully and keeping your blood pressure under control can help to prevent these complications".

Lycopene is a phytochemical found in tomatoes in the class of carotenoids, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world's diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.

On finding a potent ingredient for the protection of kidney damage, researchers examined the effect of lycopene on the nephrotoxicity of deltamethrin.

The study included male albino rats that were divided into four groups with animals each: group I served as control, which received a standard diet; Group II received oral administration of deltamethrin (1.28 mg/kg per day) for 30 days; group III received both deltamethrin and lycopene (1 mg/kg per day); group IV received lycopene (1 mg/kg per day).

According to the results at the end of the experiment, deltamethrin treated group not only showed significantly increased expression of the pro-inflammatory cytokine, TNF-α but also caused mild necrotic changes of the kidney associated with localized cell death due to interruption of the blood supply.

Renal proximal tubules in the deltamethrin-treated group also showed an increased number and irregular shape of mitochondria causing the reduced function of the cell in the kidney to take nutrients from the cell break it down and turn it into energy.

Vacuolar degeneration in the epithelial cells, increased number of lysosomes, and loss of apical microvilli associated with the reduced function of kidney cells in the absorptive and secretory function may lead to the decrease of the detoxed function of the kidney.

Moreover, focal segmental thickening and the duplication of the glomerular basement membrane and podocyte changes are involved in kidney damage. were also found in the deltamethrin-treated group.

Pretreatment of lycopene demonstrated a strong effect either restoring the kidney tissue damage or inhibiting the parameters that cause the kidney disease.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Histopathological and ultrastructural study showed some protective effect of lycopene on kidney tissues".

Taken together, lycopene found in tomatoes may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of kidney damage, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Garlic-Age-#Extract and Its #Allicin Exert a Strong Endogenous Antioxidant Defenses in Hippocampus Associated with #Cognitive Impaire, Researchers Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Allicin, a bioactive and organosulfur compound may have a profound effect in improving the cognitive function of the elderly, some scientists suggested.

Cognitive activity is a long-term process of reasoning, memory, attention, and language and information accumulated that leads to knowledge.

In the elderly, the causes of cognitive dysfunction are associated with a set of factors, including medication side effects, metabolic and/or endocrine derangements due to aging, delirium due to intercurrent illness, depression, and dementia.

Dr. Ian M. Deutchki, MD University of Rochester, in the article What’s causing my older patient’s cognitive decline? wrote, "n primary care settings, when patients complain of memory loss, there is a 20% to 30% chance they will be found to have a mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or some level of dementia" and "Remote memory, semantic memory (factual information), and procedural memory (knowledge of skills and procedures) tend to remain intact with aging.4 Short-term memory (simple maintenance of information over a short period) shows little change with aging. However, working memory, which requires the manipulation of in decline".

Some researchers suggested besides the correlated factors of aging in the risk of cognitive decline, a healthy diet, and lifestyle accompanied by physical inactivity are also some of the risk factors that have a significant effect on the contribution of cognitive decline.

Dr. P.J. Smith, the lead author at the Duke University Medical Center, in the concerns of cognitive decline, an increasingly important public health problem, with more than 100 million adults worldwide associated with a change of lifestyle said, "Lifestyle factors including dietary patterns, may be important in the prevention of cognitive decline and dementia in later life" and "antioxidants, fatty acids, and B vitamins are associated with better cognitive functioning"

This conclusion suggested that following a healthy diet pattern, lifestyle and moderate exercise before the onset of the syndrome is one of the best methods in the prevention of neurodegenerative diseases in later life.

In elderly with cognitive decline, Dr. María Alicia Camina suggested malnutrition is a highly prevalent geriatric syndrome in the elderly with dementia, especially in institutionalized patients and in subjects in advanced stages of the illness.

Therefore by changing the pattern of diet that targets malnutrition in the elderly, through nutritional screening and a complete nutritional assessment, the progression of cognitive decline in the elderly can be slowed down.

Allicin is a phytochemical containing sulfur in the class of organosulfur compounds, found abundantly in onion and garlic.

Dr. Li XH, the lead scientist in the research program at the Medicine of Jishou University in reaffirming the effect of allicin on the learning and memory abilities in the course of normal aging cognitive abilities associated with the Nrf2 expression in the decline with aging launched an investigation to assess the effects of allicin on endogenous antioxidant defenses in hippocampus of a cognitively impaired aged mouse.

The organosulfur compounds, allicin activated Nrf2 during the application process by donating an electron pair to an electrophile to form a chemical bond in relation to a reaction through its electrophil·ic effect.

Treatment of allicin significantly through the expression of Nrf2 antioxidant signaling pathways ameliorated aging-induced cognitive dysfunction in the tested aged mouse.

The Nrf2 antioxidant signaling pathways are master mediators of antioxidant and detoxification responses and regulators of the cellular redox state that protect us from pathologies that are caused or exacerbated by oxidative stress in the induction of aging-related diseases, including cognitive decline.

Furthermore, antioxidant also plays an important role in metabolic regulation and their interaction with central signaling systems that respond to nutritional inputs. These results have a strong impact on the theory associated with malnutritional effects that cause the onset of neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's disease in the elderly.

In the final report of the experiment, the researchers wrote, "Allicin could be recommended as a possible candidate for the prevention and therapy of cognitive deficits in aging and Alzheimer's disease".

In the further differentiation of the oxidative modification of DNA, proteins, and lipids associated with reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the initiation of aging and disease, including cardiovascular, neurodegenerative and inflammatory diseases and cancer, researchers showed
* Extracts of aged garlic extract (AGE) contain antioxidant phytochemical allicin exerts a protective activity against oxidant damage.

* Up to 20 months of garlic-aged extract, creates antioxidant properties that inhibit the unstable free radicals with antioxidant activity, such as allicin, that lead to stable and highly bioavailable water-soluble organosulfur compounds.

* Allicin and other compounds found in AGE inhibited the overexpression of ROS by enhancing the cellular antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase, and increasing glutathione in the cells.

* The chemical ingredients of the AGE also inhibit lipid peroxidation by reducing ischemia/reperfusion damage and inhibiting oxidative modification of LDL, thus protecting endothelial cells from injury by the oxidized molecules, which contributes to atherosclerosis.

More importantly, Allicin and compounds in the AGE showed the ability to protect against oxidant-induced disease, acute damage from aging, radiation and chemical exposure, and long-term toxic damage.

Taken together, Allicin, the major bioactive compound found in garlic and onion may be considered a functional supplement for the prevention of cognitive decline and an adjunct therapy with conventional medicine to delay the progression of neurodegenerative diseases in the elderly.

#Herbal #Turmeric Modulate the Phase II Detoxification Enzymes Associated with Skin Regeneration and Wound Healing

Kyle J. Norton

Skin is a large organ that protects our internal organs and tissues by shielding them from the invasion of foreign pathogens. Several different components, such as water, protein, lipids, and different minerals and chemicals have been found to make up the skin integrity.
Furthermore, the skin accompanied by the liver and kidney forms a detoxed triad by eliminating toxins from the body.

Skin regeneration or repair is a natural process which epithelial cells restore the epidermis once the dermis has been regenerated.

However, in major injuries, the repair mechanisms may not completely restore the skin to its original condition, leading to the formation of scars.

In details, the skin regenerates through 3 stages
* Initial phase or acute phase of infection.
The immune system's white blood cells of the first line of defense stimulate the blood platelets to cover the wound or injury and production of proinflammatory cytokines, leading to the creation of new blood vessels to replace those that were damaged in the precipitating incident.

* Regeneration of the epidermis and dermis involved in the proliferation of the cells of the stratum basale and the movement of a healthy portion of the dermis at the edges of the wound into its interior.

Any disruption of the process of skin regeneration can lead to the formation of scars

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
In finding a potential compound for the treatment of skin wounds, researchers examined the effect of curcumin the main constituent found in turmeric on free radical scavenging and anti-inflammation activity.

During the experiment, curcumin was found to modulate the phase II detoxification enzymes associated with detoxification reactions and the protection against oxidative stress.

Furthermore, the injection of curcumin also enhanced skin regeneration and wound healing.

Moreover, curcumin protects the skin by quenching free radicals and reducing inflammation involved in protein that stimulates the production of inflammatory cytokines.

Curcumin administration also promotes skin regeneration in wound healing by improving wound-healing time, collagen deposition, and increased fibroblast and vascular density in wounds.

Additionally, the effects of skin regeneration and wound healing were also attributed to the compound's proangiogenic property.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "These studies suggest the beneficial effects of curcumin and the potential of this compound to be developed as a potent nontoxic agent for treating skin diseases".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed with a high amount of curcumin may be considered a supplement for the enhancement of skin regeneration in wound healing, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Phytochemical #AnacardicAcid Processes Anti Breast Cancer Activity, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Anacardic acids, a phytochemical found abundantly in the may process a potential effect in reducing the risk and treatment of breast cancer, some scientists suggested.
Breast cancer is a chronic condition associated with irregular cell growth caused by the alternation of DNA of breast cells.

Most cases of breast cancer start on the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissue of the milk ducts (Ductal carcinoma) or the lobules (Lobular carcinoma) that supply the ducts with milk.

However, after colonizing most of the breast tissue, the cancer cell at a later stage can travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organs through the circulation of lymph and blood.

According to the statistics, every year, 75,000 and 234,000 patients are diagnosed with breast cancer (BC) in Germany and in the USA, respectively.

In 2010, over 250,000 new cases of breast cancer were expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S. alone and the risk of getting invasive breast cancer during the lifetime of a woman is 1/8.

Although genetic preposition such as mutated genes BRCA 1 and 2 are the best-known risk factors associated with the 60% increased risk of breast cancer.

An unhealthy lifestyle including poor diet and physical inactivity is also the most mentioned risk factor by scientists.

Dr. Max Dieterich, the lead scientist in the study "Influence of Lifestyle Factors on Breast Cancer Risk" wrote, "Epidemiological studies that lifestyle factors play an important role in the development of BC. For example, daughters of Asian women who have migrated to the USA revealed an increased risk of developing BC, which was attributed to the exposure to a different lifestyle and nutritional factors".

These results suggested regardless of ethical origin, if you follow the Western diet and lifestyle, you are at higher levels of risk, compared to those who follow the traditional diet.

More precisely, if you are following a diet high in saturated and trans fat, red meat, and processed food, regardless of where you're from, you are at a higher risk of breast cancer.

Therefore modifying the lifestyle risk factors to develop a strategy for BC prevention is an urgency for the prevention of breast cancer.

Other risk factors associated with breast cancer are age, family history of BC, personal breast history (pre-malignant lesions), breast density, thorax radiation, and several menstrual cycles during the lifetime.

To understand the effect of Anacardic acid (AnAc; 2-hydroxy-6-alkylbenzoic acid), a dietary and medicinal phytochemical anticancer activity in cell and animal models, researchers at the cancer team program at the University of Louisville School of Medicine, conducted an experiment to test the mechanisms of the AnAc in the inhibition of breast cancer cell proliferation.

Application of the AnAc 24:1(omega5) purified from geranium (Pelargonium x hortorum) inhibited the proliferation of estrogen receptor alpha (ERalpha)-positive MCF-7 and endocrine-resistant LCC9 and LY2 breast cancer cells with greater efficacy than ERalpha-negative primary human breast epithelial cells, MCF-10A normal breast epithelial cells, and MDA-MB-231 basal-like breast cancer cells.

AnAc 24:1(omega5) inhibited cell cycle progression and induced apoptosis in a cell-specific manner.

AnAc 24:1(omega5) inhibited the breast cancer cell line and was attributed to the stimulation of proteins that are responsible for program cell death and anti-cell proliferation.

.
Dr. Schultz DJ, the lead scientist at the end of the study said, "These data indicate that AnAc 24:1(omega5) inhibits cell proliferation, cell cycle progression, and apoptosis in an ER-dependent manner by reducing ER-DNA interaction and inhibiting ER-mediated transcriptional responses".

Furthermore, in examining the series of N-(4-cyano-3-trifluoromethylphenyl)-2-ethoxy-6-alkyl (and alkenyl) benzamides related to the anacardic acid derivative CTPB prepared from 2,6-dihydroxybenzoic acid, researchers found that In U937 cells
* Derivatives labeled 7 c, 7 d, 7, and 7 j exerted a potential effect in inducing cell-cycle arrest in the G1 phase,

* The derivative also causes apoptosis in about 20 % of the cells and increases the acetylation of H3. Loss of acylation levels of H3 was associated with patients with breast cancer.

Taken together, Anacardic acids may be considered a functional phytochemical for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of breast cancer.

#Honey Exerts Anti #ProstateCancer by Inducing Cell Cytotoxicity, Researchers Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Honey may be a potential natural source for the pharmaceutic target for the finding of anti-prostate cancer single and synthetic medicine, some studies suggested. Prostate cancer is a low-growth and progression medical and chronic disease caused by cell growth disorderly and irregularly in the prostate tissue.

Most cases of primary prostate cancer start in the cells on the surface of the prostate's inner lining tissue. Most people with the early stage of prostate cancer may not have any symptoms, however, some may experience the symptoms of the enlarged prostate such as pain during urination and urinary difficulty.

Most secondary cancers associated with prostate cancer metastasis are the lymph nodes and the bones.

However, at the advanced stage, the cancerous cells in the prostate can travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissues and organs by way of the lymph system or bloodstream.

Most prostate cancer is diagnosed during the annual physical exam after the enlarged prostate is discovered

Researchers do not the exact cause of prostate cancer. Neither do they know why men in the same family with similar diet patterns, some are susceptible to the prostate cell's DNA alternation, while some do not.

According to the statistics provided by the Australian government, the mortality rate of prostate cancer decreased from 34 deaths per 100,000 males in 1982 to 31 per 100,000.
In 2011. Around 9 in 10 males diagnosed with prostate cancer survive 5 years from diagnosis. Prostate cancer is the fourth leading cause of mortality among Australian males, causing 3,294 deaths.

There are many risk factors associated with the development of prostate cancer. However, An unhealthy diet and lifestyle are the preventable risk factors that cause widespread prostate cancer in the Western world.

Dr. Roberto Fabian, the lead scientist at the University of Perugia, in the support that the Western diet is the major cause of prostate cancer, conducted the study "A Western Dietary Pattern Increases Prostate Cancer Risk: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis" by searching the database of PubMed, Web of Science to identify studies reporting the relationship between dietary patterns and PC risk.

After taking the account multivariable-adjusted odds ratios (ORs), wrote, " Twelve observational studies were included in the meta-analysis which identified a “Healthy pattern” and a “Western pattern” and "The Healthy pattern was not related to PC risk (OR = 0.96; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.88–1.04) while the Western pattern significantly increased it (OR = 1.34; 95% CI: 1.08–1.65)".

These comparable results once again suggested that men who follow the Western diet are associated with an increased risk of prostate cancer

Honey, the rich golden liquid is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

Honey is considered one of the healthy sweet foods for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweeteners by many people.

In finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of prostate cancer without inducing any side effects, researchers at the University of Otago looked into honey, the complex biological substance, consisting mainly of sugars, phenolic compounds, and enzymes.

In prostate cancer cells PC3 and DU145, the application of honey whole food exerted a strong inhibitory effect through the expression of cytotoxicity.

The sulforhodamine B assay gave valid anti-prostate cancer results, but measures only protein content, providing no information about cell death in the remaining cells.

The trypan blue assay and a microscope-based propidium iodide/Hoechst staining assay assess only late-stage membrane permeability.

Only the propidium iodide/Hoechst assay provides morphological information about the cell death mechanism.

These results suggested that honey processed a potential to induce prostate cancer cell death through certain known and unknown mechanisms besides those found in the sulforhodamine B and propidium iodide/Hoechst assays

Interestingly, they examine the possibility of New Zealand thyme, manuka, and honeydew honey, and their major sugar and phenolic components, reducing the development of metastatic cancer.also in PC3 and DU145 prostate cancer cell lines. researchers showed that
Non-toxic concentrations of thyme and honeydew honey reduced prostate cancer cell migration by 20% observed by the Boyden chamber-based migration assay,

All phenolic compounds including gallic acid, quercetin, kaempferol, and chrysin except caffeic acid also lowered migration, although a mixture of only the sugars found in honey had no effect.

All of the honey, phenolics, and sugar-only mixture reduced the invasive movement of cells through the extracellular matrix in the cellular division by up to 75%.

Additional analysis also found that each of the three kinds of honey and the sugar-only mixture reduces cell adhesion to collagen I by 90%, except for quercetin.

However, honey and its sugar and phenolic components can lower the metastatic properties of cancer cells and may do this by preventing effective cell adhesion to the extracellular matrix.

Once again, researchers suggested that the sugars and phenol compounds of honey are much more effective in combination than individually.

In other words, the anticancer activity of honey is attributed to all ingredients in the whole food.

Taken together, intake of honey in a moderate amount daily may have a potential effect in the prevention and combined with primary therapy for the treatment of prostate cancer.

#Phytochemical #Allicin Inhibits #CardiovascularDiseases by Inducing Vasorelaxation and Alleviating Various Pathological Conditions, Scientists Find

Kyle J. Norton

Allicin, a bioactive compound found abundantly in garlic and onion may be the next pharmaceutical target to identify the single-ingredient medicine for the treatment of cardiovascular disease, some scientists suggested.

Cardiovascular diseases are a class of chronic and medical conditions of heart and blood vessel disease related to the plaque build-up in the walls of the arteries that cause the blockage of blood flow and reduce the oxygen and nutrients rich blood reaching the heart, leading to heart attack and stroke,

There are many causes of heart disease. Most heart diseases are caused by high blood pressure that contributes to the hardening of the arteries.
High levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) build up in the arteries as a result of an uncontrolled diet with high levels of saturated fat and trans fat.

All these add to the formation of atherosclerosis lesions and eventually arterial blockage or anything that serves to damage the inner lining of blood vessels and impedes the transportation of oxygen and nutrition to the heart can be defined as a risk of heart disease.

Dr. P. Scarborough, the lead author in the study "An index of an unhealthy lifestyle is associated with coronary heart disease mortality rates for small areas in England after adjustment for deprivation" wrote, "Sets of synthetic estimates of the ward-level prevalence of low fruit and vegetable consumption, obesity, raised blood pressure, raised cholesterol and smoking were combined to develop an index of an unhealthy lifestyle".

These results suggested that people who follow the Western diet with high consumption of saturated and trans fat, red meats, and processed food accompanied by physical inactivity are associated with a substantially increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

On the other hand, people who are nonsmokers and follow a traditional diet with a high intake of fruits and vegetables and whole-grain and daily moderate exercise have a lower risk of the disease onset.

If you experience symptoms of chest pain, tightness, chest discomfort (angina), shortness of breath and weakness or coldness in your legs or arms, please check with your doctor immediately, you may be at the early onset of cardiovascular disease.

Allicin is a phytochemical containing sulfur in the class of organosulfur compounds, found abundantly in onion and garlic.

In the concerns of hyperlipidemia. cause of cardiovascular disease, researchers at the Taishan Medical University, conducted an investigation to test the effects of combination therapy of allicin and fenofibrate on the endothelial and liver functions in rats.

In the study, healthy male Wistar rats fed a high-fat diet were treated with fenofibrate (80 mg/kg per day) alone, allicin (60 mg/kg per day) alone, and a lower dosage of combined therapy (allicin 20 mg/kg per day and fenofibrate 30 mg/kg per day) respectively for 8 weeks.

At the final phase, compared with high-fat diet control, fenofibrate alone or the combined therapy increased remarkably the levels of high-density lipoprotein respectively (P<0.05).

Both single and combined therapy of fenofibrate and allicin significantly enhanced the levels of NO (P<0.01 or P<0.05), but the combined therapy had the greatest high endothelial-dependent vascular relaxation (EDVR) responses. These suggested that both ingredients had a significant effect in enhancing vascular relaxation.

Futhermore, the combined therapy also inhibited the levels of ALT and AST caused by infection of a high-fat diet in the stimulation of oxidative stress.

Additionally, in the search for chemicals that arise from natural food sources with the potential to provide beneficial effects on the cardiovascular system, researchers at the heart team at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University launched a study to test the effect of allicin on heart diseases.

Application of Allicin demonstrated cardioprotective effects by inducing vasorelaxation and alleviating various pathological conditions of CVD, including cardiac hypertrophy, angiogenesis, platelet aggregation, hyperlipidemia, and hyperglycemia.

Allicin was also discovered to further protect the cardiovascular system by enhancing the antioxidant status by lowering the level of reactive oxygen species and stimulating the production of glutathione.

Dr. Chan JY, the lead author, said, "From the pharmacokinetic studies, allicin is known to be hydrophobic and can be readily absorbed through the cell membrane without inducing any damage to the phospholipid bilayer and then rapidly metabolized to exert pharmacological effects that are important to the cardiovascular system".

Taken all together, Allicin, the bioactive compound may be considered a functional supplement for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, depending on the further differentiation in the human study

Oxidative stress is a condition characterized by a chain reaction of the overexpression of free radicals that cannot be stopped.
In other words, overexpression of free radicals and depletion of antioxidants are the major causes of oxidative stress.

More precisely, oxidative stress is a result of a long-term imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants produced by the host.

Free radicals are highly reactive atoms with a single unpaired electron in an outermost shell with a function to donate or intercept an electron from other stable atoms, leading to a chain reaction that induces oxidative damage to the enzymes, other proteins, unsaturated fatty acid, phospholipids, DNA and RNA,..,

Antioxidants are stable atoms that inhibit oxidation.

Oxidative stress may be preventable if antioxidants in the body can pair all electrons in the outermost ring.

Overexpression of free radicals is harmful to the human body. However, free radicals in a moderate amount generated from cell metabolism may play a critical role in the synthesis of energy and essential molecules and boost the immune system.

In a healthy individual, antioxidants produced by the body are good enough to prevent the onset of oxidative stress. However, in people with a weakened immune system, intake of dietary antioxidants such as supplements of antioxidant-rich food may be necessary.

Dr. Biller-Takahashi JD, the lead scientist in the joint study led by the UNESP Univ Estadual Paulista wrote, "Short-term supplementation with 0.6 mg Se-yeast kg(-1) reestablished the antioxidative status, allowing the production of innate components which can boost immunity without the risk of oxidative stress".

Broccoli is a species of Brassica Oleracea, belonging to the family Brassicaceae with unknown origin. Today, the plant is cultivated commercially for its thick, slightly bitter edible leaves.

In findings of a potent and natural compound to prevent pancreatic tissue damage in diabetes, scientists investigated the potential hypoglycaemic and antioxidant properties of aqueous broccoli extracts (BEs) in diabetic rats.

Rats selected for the study induced diabetes by a single intraperitoneal injection dose of 50 mg/kg body weight of Streptozotocin (STZ) drug were co-administration with or without BEs.

After 8 weeks, based on the blood analysis, diabetic rats without co-administration with BEs showed significantly higher levels of pancreatic cell DNA damage, depletion of levels of antioxidant GSH, and impaired antioxidant capacity (TAC) levels, compared to non-diabetics.

Furthermore, diabetes rats without co-administration with BEs also demonstrated significant pancreatic tissue damage.

Diabetes rats with BEs co-administration not only reduced all parameters expression but also protected the pancreatic tissue against histopathological changes.

In other words, BEs reduced the damage to pancreas tissue caused by STZ-induced hyperglycemia and oxidative injury by enhancing the production of antioxidant enzymes in the tested rats.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "The used in vivo model confirmed the efficacy of BE as an anti-diabetic herbal medicine and provided insights into the capacity of BE to be used for phytoremediation purposes for human type 2 diabetes".

Taken together, broccoli may be considered a functional food for the prevention of oxidative stress-induced pancreatic tissue damage, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
