The kidneys formed part of the secretary system are two bean-shaped organs located against the back muscles in the upper abdominal area.
The kidneys play a critical role in filtering wastes from the breakdown of active muscle and the food you eat and removing extra water from the blood through urinary secretion.
Futhermore, the kidneys also maintain the fluid in the body by secreting extra water through urinary secretion.
Kidney dysfunction reduces the body's ability to clean and filter extra water from your blood, leading to fluid retention and high blood pressure in the early stage. Believe it or not, people with a kidney function of 10% do not show signs of kidney dysfunction and symptoms.
In other words, kidney disease often has no symptoms until at a very advanced stage.
Chronic kidney disease is a gradual loss of kidney function over time. Chronic kidney failure is the end stage of chronic kidney disease which has been found in high number in patients with diabetes, high blood pressure and other disorders.
Acute kidney dysfunction or acute kidneys failure is a result of insufficient blood flow to the kidneys such as renal hypertension. These types of kidneys dysfunction can be cured if the causes are found.
Most cases of acute kidney dysfunction may be associated with toxins accumulated in the kidney organs, leading to the condition of nephrotoxicity.
Nephrotoxicity is a condition of kidney function caused by exposure to toxic chemicals or overdose of certain medications.
Some researchers suggested that people with diabetes are at an increased risk of chronic kidney disease, particularly in those with hyperglycemia.
The National Kidney Foundation wrote, "Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure, accounting for 44% percent of new cases. Current research suggests that control of high blood pressure is a key factor in slowing this disease. The strict control of blood sugar levels and reduction of dietary protein intake are also important. Treatment to prevent diabetic kidney disease should begin early — before kidney damage develops".
Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.
In finding a potential compound for the treatment of renal disease, researchers examined the effect Vaccinium macrocarpon (Dandelion)and Taraxacum officinale (Cranberry) on spontaneous feline chronic kidney disease.
The study included 34 neutered cats, suffering from stage II-III chronic kidney disease and diagnosed according to the International Renal Interest Society guidelines randomly assigned to receive either a control diet (n = 17) or a nutraceutical diet (ND; n = 17) containing 60-80% hydrolyzed proteins, 20-40% minerals and active substances (Lespedeza spp. 0.0588, Vaccinium macrocarpon 0.0371%, and Taraxacum officinale 0.0231%.) for 90 days.
According to tested analysis, both showed a significant effect on the reduced symptoms.
Cats that received the ND exerted a significant decrease in creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, total proteins, and aspartate aminotransferase. The elevated levels of the aforementioned parameters have been found persistently in patients with chronic kidney disease.
Furthermore, urine turbidity score, color score, and total proteins associated with the progression of CKD in cats that received the ND were also decreased substantially.
Collectively, researchers after taking other factors into account said, "An ND based on Lespedeza spp., Vaccinium macrocarpon, and Taraxacum officinale improves key indicators of renal failure in cats affected by chronic kidney disease".
Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of CKD, particularly in the combination with dandelion and Lespedeza spp, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Phytochemical #Betacyanins Enhance Chemo-Drugs Efficacy and Reduces Its Toxicity, Researchers Suggest
Kyle J. Norton
Chemo-drugs are a class of conventional medicine used for the treatment of cancers. including 5-fluorouracil, 6-mercaptopurine, cytarabine, gemcitabine, and methotrexate.
Compared to other treatments, chemotherapy targets cancer's specific genes, proteins, or the tissue environment that contributes to cancer growth and survival.
Chemo drugs have been found to improve the survival rate of cancer patients. However, they also induce significant side effects.
The most common side effects of chemo-drugs are fatigue, hair loss, easy bruising, and bleeding. infection, anemia (low red blood cell counts) nausea and vomiting, appetite changes, and constipation.
The side effects of chemo drugs are the results of damage to the healthy blood-forming cells in the bone marrow, hair follicles, and cells in the mouth, digestive tract, and reproductive system.
According to the American Cancer Society, some chemo drugs have also been found to damage cells in the heart, kidneys, bladder, lungs, and nervous system.
Therefore, for patients who are at a higher risk of severe symptoms, medicines are taken with the chemo. Sometimes they are a must to help protect your body’s normal cells.
Conventionally, most chemo drugs side effects go away fairly quickly, but some may take months or even years for the symptoms to go away completely.
However, chemo-drugs that cause long-term damage to the heart, lungs, kidneys, or reproductive organs are irreversible
Betacyanins are phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments, belonging to the group of betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.
To find a chemical compound that enhances the chemo drug efficacy and reduces the chemotoxicity, researchers examined the extract of red beetroot (Beta vulgaris L.), the FDA-approved red food color E162, in the development of multi-organ tumors in experimental animals.
By comparing the cytotoxic effect of the red beetroot extract with an anti-cancer drug, doxorubicin (Adriamycin) in the androgen-independent human prostate cancer cells (PC-3) and in the well-established estrogen receptor-positive human breast cancer cells (MCF-7), researchers found that
* Both doxorubicin and the beetroot extract exhibited a dose-dependent cytotoxic effect in both PC-3 and MCF-7 cancer cell lines.
* Doxorubicin, at the concentration of 29 µg/m., completely inhibited the growth of the PC-3 cells in three days.
* Although the cytotoxicity of the beetroot extract was significantly lower compared to doxorubicin, the extract continued to decrease the growth rate of the PC-3 cells (3.7% in 3 days vs. 12.5% in 7 days) at the same concentration.
In other words, both beetroot extract and Doxorubicin exerted a significant cytotoxic activity against the tested cancer cell line. However, the efficacy of beetroot extract is lower compared to those of Doxorubicin.
According to the chemical analysis, betacyanin was found to play an important role in the cytotoxicity exhibited by the red beetroot extract.
Moreover, betaxanthins and betacyanins used in combination with conventional anticancer drugs were found to reduce chemo-drug toxicity and overcome the multidrug resistance of cancer cells.
Based on the findings, researchers concluded betacyanins were used alone or combined with other phytochemicals or chemo drugs to block the onset of the proliferation of tumor cells.
Taken together, betacyanins found in beetroot extract are used alone or combined with conventional anti-cancer medicine to enhance the chemo-drugs efficacy and reduce chemotoxicity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of betacyanins in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Phytochemical Allyl isothiocyanate AITC Promotes Brain Cancer Cell Apoptosis and Induced Cell Proliferation, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
Phytochemical Allyl isothiocyanate may be the next pharmacotherapeutic target to identify the chemo drug for the treatment of brain cancer without inducing any side effects.
Phytochemicals, the natural chemical constituent, protect the plants against diseases and form their outer color.
The brain and spinal cord make up the nervous system. Brain and Spinal Cord tumors originating are not very common.
Brain cancer is a medical and chronic condition characterized by cell growth disorderly in the brain tissue.
Benign tumors are noncancerous, and malignant tumors are cancerous. More than 190.000 people in the US are diagnosed with a brain tumor each year alone.
Most brain types of brain cancer in older adults ages 50 to 60 are Chordomas. The cancer is rare and slow-growing, but it can invade adjacent bone and put pressure on the nearby neural tissue.
Meningiomas, are the most common type of benign brain tumor in the age group 40-50. However, a small percentage of these tumors can be malignant.
According to the statistic provided by the Canadian Cancer Society, Every day about 25 Canadians is diagnosed with a brain tumor.
The 5-year survival rate of brain cancer is only 25%, compared to over 60% for cancers overall. Most adults with a diagnosis of aggressive glioblastoma survive only 1–2 years after their diagnosis.
The exact causes of brain cancer are debatable. Researchers do not know why people with the same health conditions, or family history, are at a higher risk of developing brain cancer while others do not.
Some researchers suggested genetic preposition and acquired gene mutation due to long-term exposure to chemical toxins may be the prevalent risk factor that causes the alternation of brain cell DNA.
The most common symptoms of brain cancer depending on the stage are persistent headaches and localized pain, gradual loss of sensation and movement, speech difficulty, and persistent pain
If you are experiencing some of the above symptoms, please make sure you check with your doctor immediately to rule out the brain cancer possibility.
Allyl isothiocyanate is a phytochemical containing sulfur in the class of organosulfur compounds, found abundantly in horseradish, mustard, wasabi, etc.
Most primary tumors are caused by abnormal cell growth that surrounds and support neurons, with a small number that may be caused by a gene defect from exposure to radiation or toxic chemicals.
The examining the side effects of Allyl isothiocyanate from the available data suggests that urinary concentrations of AITC equivalent are at least ten times higher than in the plasma, and tissue levels of AITC equivalent in the urinary bladder were 14-79 times higher than in other organs after oral AITC administration to rats for the treatment of cancer.
These results indicated that AITC may be most effective in the bladder as a cancer chemopreventive compound, as AITC at high-dose levels exhibited a low degree of cytotoxicity and genotoxicity in animal cancer studies.
Once again, the experiment reaffirmed the effect of AITC in the exhibition of many desirable attributes of a cancer chemopreventive agent.
In the reassessment of Allyl isothiocyanate (AITC) in the reduced risk of cancer, researchers at the National Chung Hsing University conducted an experiment to examine the effects of the phytochemical in brain cancer cells.
In comparison to other cancer cell lines inhibition, AITC significantly decreased the proliferation and viability of human brain malignant glioma GBM 8401 cells in a dose-dependent manner with IC50 9.25+/-0.69 microM for 24 h-treatment.
In cell differentiated assay, AITC induced significant G2/M arrest and sub-G1 phase (apoptotic population) in GBM 8401 cells.
AITC markedly reduced the CDK1/cyclin B activity and protein levels which are responsible for cancer cell proliferation and survival.
Furthermore, AITC-induced apoptotic cell death by enhancing the proteins associated with cell death programming.
Dr. Chen NG, the lead scientist at the final report, said, "AITC is a potent anti-human brain malignant glioma drug and it shows a remarkable action on cell cycle arrest before a commitment for apoptosis is reached".
Taken altogether, it is safe to suggest that Phytochemical Allyl isothiocyanate may be used as a chemopreventive and functional phytochemical for high-risk brain cancer individuals and an adjunct therapy combined with primary medicine for the treatment of brain cancer.

#AlliinCombined with Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibitor #Captopril Inhibit Chronic Parameters Associated with Cardiovascular Diseases, Researchers Show
Kyle J. Norton
Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are a group of chronic conditions involving blood vessels or the heart.
Depending on the location that has been affected, CVD can be classified into 6 main types including
* Ischemic heart disease, the most common form of cardiovascular disease in the Western world caused by partial blockage of blood flow in the arteries, leading to reduced oxygenate blood circulation to the heart muscle.
* Strokes are caused by the reduced circulation of blood in the blood vessels of the brain due to blockage or breaking capillaries.
* Congenital heart disease is a condition caused by the defective structure of the heart arising because of a birth defect.
There are many factors associated with the risk of CVD. Epidemiologically, hypertension, high blood cholesterol, smoking, medical conditions such as diabetes, obesity, physical inactivity, family history, and women with PCOs are some CVD prevalent risks.
The more factors you have, your risk of CVD is higher compared to those with less.
Out of the aforementioned risk factors, some researchers in the examination of the risk of atherosclerosis increased at an alarming rate over the past few decades and suggested that CVD may be correlated to the promotion of a high-fat diet in the same period.
Dr. Frank M. Sacks said, ",...randomized controlled trials that lowered intake of dietary saturated fat and replaced it with polyunsaturated vegetable oil reduced CVD by ≈30%, similar to the reduction achieved by statin treatment".
And, "Prospective observational studies in many populations showed that lower intake of saturated fat coupled with higher intake of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fat is associated with lower rates of CVD and of other major causes of death and all-cause mortality".
In other words, a long-term high-fat diet has a strong implication in elevating the onset of CVD.
Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide,. a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belonging to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.
To find a natural cardioprotective ingredient, researchers examined the effects of short-term treatment with two doses of CPSSA on cardiovascular risk factors associated with the metabolic syndrome, in comparison to the effects of allicin and captopril separately.
Allicin (8 mg/(kg day)) protected the heart function by significantly reducing insulin, triglycerides, and homocysteine concentrations and blood pressure compared to Captopril (50mg/(kg day)) improved only on blood pressure and homocysteine.
Allylmercaptocaptopril (CPSSA), a new stable synthetic compound produced by chemical reaction between allicin and the angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor captopril with low dose (5mg/(kg day)) lowered SBP but did not improve any other measured parameter, while treatment with a higher dose (50mg/(kg day)) significantly decreased blood pressure, triglycerides, and homocysteine concentrations.
In other words, allicin and captopril protect the heart synergetically by inhibiting the conditions associated with the risk of cardiovascular disease.
Based on the findings, Dr. the lead scientist wrote," The combined molecule CPSSA integrates the anti-hypertensive, lipid-lowering, and homocysteine-reducing effects of both allicin and captopril, making it a potential cardiovascular protective agent.".
Taken together, alliin used alone or combined with other herbal medicines may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of alliin in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Cranberry Flavonoids Exert Antioxidant and Free Radical Scavenging Activity, Researchers Suggest
Kyle J. Norton
Free radicals are highly reactive atoms associated with an unpaired electron in the outermost ring produced internally by our body cell metabolism and externally by environmental factors, including the air that we breathe and the food we eat.
In other words, any chemical compounds or molecules that process oxygen atoms can be free radicals after chemical interaction.
Believe it or not, free radical in moderate amounts is important for our body functions such as NO cardio-vessel relaxation. However, in high levels, free radicals have been found epidemiologically to damage the lipids, and proteins and induce the alternation of healthy cell DNA.
Out of all the damages caused by overexpression of free radicals, some researchers suggested that lipid peroxidation induced by free radicals has a strong implication in the pathogenesis of various disorders and diseases, including free radical-mediated chain reaction, enzyme-mediated oxidation, and nonradical, non-enzymatic oxidation.
This chain of reaction can not be stopped until the electrons on the outermost ring of free radicals are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.
Free radical scavengers are antioxidants that process a specific function to prevent the forming of free radicals by removing them before they can damage vital components of the cell.
Dr. Slemmer JE, the lead scientist in the examination of free radical scavengers for the treatment of stroke wrote, "The overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) is a common underlying mechanism of many neuropathologies, as they have been shown to damage various cellular components, including proteins, lipids, and DNA".
And "several acute and chronic pharmacological therapies that have been extensively studied to reduce ROS/RNS loads in cells and the subsequent oxidative stress, so-called "free-radical scavengers".
These results strongly suggested that antioxidants with free radical scavenging activity protect the body against the damage of various cellular components, including proteins, lipids, and DNA alternation in the initiation of diseases.
In finding a potential compound for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers examined the cranberry antioxidative and protective effects of cranberry flavonoids in free radical-generating systems on mitochondrial ultrastructure.
In radical-generating systems, cranberry flavonoids effectively inhibit the generation of free radical nitric oxide (IC50 = 4.4 ± 0.4 µg/ml), superoxide anion radicals (IC50 = 2.8 ± 0.3 µg/ml) and hydroxyl radicals (IC50 = 53 ± 4 µg/ml).
1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radicals (DPPH) were scavenged at the concentration of 2.2 ± 0.3 µg/ml with the IC50.
Furthermore, cranberry flavonoids exerted antioxidant and free radical scavenging activity against lipid peroxidation in liposomal membranes and glutathione oxidation in erythrocytes induced by UV irradiation or organic hydroperoxides.
Moreover, the phytochemical compound also decreased the rigidity of the outer leaflet of the liposomal membranes.
In the liver, cranberry flavonoids also displayed hepatoprotective potential by preventing rat liver mitochondrial damage.
Collectively, researchers said, "The mitochondria-addressed effects of flavonoids might be related both to radical-scavenging properties and modulation of various mitochondrial events".
Taken together, cranberry may be considered a free radical scavenging remedy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal #Bilberry and #Cranberry #Extract and Theirs #Anthocyanidins Inhibit the Onset of Oral Candida Biofilms, Researchers Suggest
Kyle J. Norton
Candida is a class of yeasts that cause fungal infections worldwide.
Candida albicans is a member of a large group of an organism whose cells contain complex structures enclosed within the membranes, including yeast and mold that live among the gut flora in the human mouth and gastrointestinal tract.
Under normal circumstances, Candida albicans do not cause harmful effects, but overgrowth results in candidiasis.
Oral candidiasis is an oral condition infected by the fungal C. albicans found mostly in people with a weakened immune system including patients who are taking the immune-suppressive medicine.
Biofilms are microbial communities in which cells stick to each other and often also to a surface.
Symptoms of oral Candida overgrowth include worse in the damp day, persistent drowsiness, lack of coordination, headaches, mood swings, loss of balance, rashes, bad breath, dry mouth, and postnasal drip.
If you experience some of the aforementioned symptoms, please make sure you check with your doctor for early treatment.
There are many risk factors associated with Candida overgrowth including medical conditions that cause a weakened immune system, inhalant medicine, low levels of stomach acids, and pregnancy.
Some researchers suggested aging may be one of the major risk factors that cause Candida overgrowth
Dr. Aikaterini Flevari, the lead scientist said, "Candida species remain the most important cause of opportunistic infections worldwide, affecting predominantly patients over 65 years old, while they are considered to be the fourth most common cause of nosocomial bloodstream infections".
And, "The rapidly growing elderly population has specific physiological characteristics, which makes it susceptible to colonization and subsequent infection due to Candida species".
Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.
The plant berry has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.
In finding a potential herbal medicine against oral Candida biofilms., researchers examined the efficacy of cranberry fruit (Vaccinium macrocarpon Aiton) and two other red fruits (Vaccinium myrtillus L. and Malpighia punicifolia L.) on Candida albicans and Candida glabrata yeasts.
According to the low concentration added to the culture medium, the combined extract displayed significant anti-adhesion activity against Candida spp.
Furthermore, the pretreatment of surfaces with the extract also exerted a strong anti-adhesion activity mainly against C. glabrata yeasts and antibiofilm activity against C. albicans.
These results suggested that the extract's inhibitory activity was dependent on concentration, species, and strain.
Moreover, observing the activity of three subfractions enriched in pro-anthocyanidins, researchers found that the components showed an anti-adhesion activity at low concentrations.
In other words, crude extracts of cranberry and Vaccinium myrtillus L. and Malpighia punicifolia L.) and their fractions process potential in the prevention of biofilms of C. glabrata.
Taken together, bilberry-processed abundantly bioactive compound anthocyanidins may be considered a functioning remedy against oral Candida biofilms, pending the validation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Bromelain (BR) and N-acetylcysteine (NAC) Inhibit #GastrointestinalCancer with Less Topxicity, According to Researchers
Kyle J. Norton
Gastrointestinal cancer is a medical and chronic condition caused by the alternation of cell DNA in the gastrointestinal tract including the esophagus, stomach, biliary system, pancreas, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, and anus.
Most cases of gastrointestinal cancer begin in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the gastrointestinal tissue, before penetrating into the deeper layers.
The most common gastrointestinal cancer is gastric cancer, which is the fourth most commonly occurring cancer in men and the seventh most commonly occurring cancer in women.
According to worldwide statistics, over 1 million new cases were diagnosed in 2018 with the South Korean leading the map, second to Mongolia.
In other words, if you are Asain, you are at an increased risk of gastric cancer.
At the advanced stage, the cancer cells of the affected tissues can travel a distance away to infect the other tissues and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.
Epidemiologically, primary gastrointestinal cancer is more likely to spread to the stomach, esophageal cancer, breast cancer, renal cell carcinoma, and ovarian cancer.
The most common symptoms of gastrointestinal cancer include
* Throw up blood with the color of coffee grounds. if the bleeding cancer is located in the esophagus or stomach
* Black stool if the bleeding cancer is located in the stomach and small intestine.
* Stool red with visible blood if the bleeding cancer is located in the large intestines.
Persistent bleeding to anemia due to a large amount of blood loss.
If you have some of the aforementioned symptoms that do heal in a short period of time, you may have gastrointestinal cancer. Please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.
If the bleeding is slow, it often doesn’t cause the person to throw up blood or have a change in their stool. Over time, though, slow bleeding can lead to a low red blood cell count, and make a person feel tired and weak.
Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.
To find a natural ingredient against gastrointestinal cancer, researchers examined the effects of bromelain and N-acetylcysteine, the two natural agents' anti-cancer effects.
In gastrointestinal cancer models to cisplatin, paclitaxel, 5-fluorouracil, and vincristine, a combination of bromelain and N-acetylcysteine with chemotherapeutic agents could give rise to an improved chemotherapeutic index.
In other words, chemo drugs used combined with bromelain and N-acetylcysteine are more effective in the inhibition of gastrointestinal cancer with lesser toxicity.
Furthermore, combined with bromelain and N-acetylcysteine also reduced the doses of chemo drugs used with the same efficacy.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "This represents a potentially efficacious strategy for the enhancement of microscopic cytoreduction".
Moreover, in the examination of the effects of bromelain (BR) and N-acetylcysteine (NAC) on MUC2 and MUC5AC which have been found to significantly contribute to the biology and pathogenesis of mucin-secreting gastrointestinal tumors, researchers found that in vitro (MKN45, KATOIII and LS174T cell lines) and in vivo (female nude mice bearing intraperitoneal MKN45 and LS174T), a combination of BR and NAC with dual effects on growth and mucin products of mucin-expressing tumor cells.
More precisely, the treatment of the combination of BR and NAC protected the gastric cells against malignancies with the involvement of mucin pathology.
Taken altogether, bromelain may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of gastrointestinal cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
