#Herbal #AshwagandhaExtract Can Induce Clinical Symptoms of Thyrotoxicosis if Overdose, Study Suggests

Kyle J. Norton

Thyroid disease is a condition or malfunction of the thyroid. Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland is overactive and produces too much thyroid hormones. Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland is underactive and produces very little thyroid hormones.

The thyroid gland is an endocrine gland located in the neck, consisting of two lobes connected by an isthmus with functions to secrete thyroid hormones (thyroxine/T4 and triiodothyronine/T3), and calcitonin.

Thyroid hormones play an important role in metabolism by stimulating almost every tissue in the body to produce proteins and increasing the amount of oxygen in the cells.

Abnormal thyroid hormone production can be diagnosed by examining whether the thyroid gland is enlarged or by taking a blood test and/or a radioactive iodine uptake test.

Thyrotoxicosis is a medical condition caused by an excess of thyroid hormone in the body.

More precisely, in thyrotoxicosis, patients experience a low level of thyroid-stimulating hormone, TSH in the bloodstream.

The most common treatment of thyrotoxicosis is the use of radioactive iodine and antithyroid medication, followed by careful follow-up.

Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered an anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

The Sectie Geneesmiddelenbewaking in Postbus in examining the case of a 32-year-old healthy woman who developed thyrotoxicosis-induced symptoms of chronic fatigue while taking capsules that contained ashwagandha herbal extract suggested* Taking ashwagandha herbal extract in reduced doses or occasionally do not cause thyrotoxicosis

* However, overdoses of ashwagandha herbal extract can induce clinical symptoms indicative of thyrotoxicosis.

* Discontinued ashwagandha herbal extract can resolve the symptoms spontaneously, according to the laboratory values.

The incidence also has been proved in animal studies as ashwagandha can increase serum concentrations of thyroid hormones.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Thyrotoxicosis is a potentially serious side effect of ashwagandha".

Taken together, Ashwagandha overdose may induce thyrotoxicosis, pending the result of a larger sample size and multicenter study

#Cranberry Processes A Strong Effects On Diseases Associated with the Production of Proinflammatory Cytokines, Scientists Say

Kyle J. Norton

Inflammation is a process of the immune system that responds to harmful pathogens.
Inflammation can be acute or chronic. In the acute phase of infection, the immune system after receiving information from the neurons, macrophages, the largest white blood cells in the first line of defense stimulate the production of blood palette to cover the wound and the production of inflammatory cytokines to kill off micro-organisms, leading to symptoms of fever, redness, and swelling.

However, in some cases, the overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines may damage nearby healthy cells and tissues, causing the formation of scars.

In severe cases, a protein with duo functions in the production of pro and anti-inflammatory cytokines which produce anti-inflammatory cytokines under normal conditions also switch to produce pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Most cases of acute inflammation are resolved within a few days without causing damage to the wound tissues. However, if the immune first line of defense can not completely destroy the invaders within a period of 3 to 8 weeks, it will compromise, leading to low-grade chronic inflammation.

Diseases associated with low-grade chronic inflammation include diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.

Dr. Duprez DA, the lead scientist at the University of Minnesota.in the investigation of inflammatory makers and chronic inflammation wrote, "Numerous studies have shown that high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), one of the most frequently studied inflammatory markers, is associated with the chronic inflammatory-related disease, cardiovascular disease, cancer and mortality [1]. While hs-CRP is a single marker of inflammation".

In other words, if you have a chronic inflammatory disease, your levels of hsCRP are much higher compared to people who do not.

Conventionally, treatment of acute phase inflammation is to manage inflammation and prevent the risk of long-term damage, including anti-inflammatory nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) which can be bought without a prescription.

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of diseases associated with inflammation, researchers examined the effect of the effects of freeze-dried cranberry powder on anti-inflammation and lipid profiles.

The study included a total of 40 Sprague-Dawley male rats (6 weeks old) were equally divided into the following five groups: 1) normal diet group + saline (NC); 2) atherogenic diet + saline (HFC); 3) atherogenic diet + LPS (HL); 4) atherogenic diet with 5% cranberry power + LPS (C5); 5) atherogenic diet with 10% cranberry power + LPS (C10).

Based on the analysis after LPS (0.5 mg/kg) was injected into the abdominal cavities of rats 18 hours prior to sacrifice, researchers found that* C5 rats treated with an atherogenic diet with 5% cranberry power + LPS showed a mean serum high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol level in C5 rats was significantly higher compared to those in NC and HL rats.

* The mean serum levels of CRP and IL-1β associated with pro-inflammatory markers and expression were significantly lower (P < 0.05) in the cranberry powder groups compared to HL rats.

* Furthermore, levels of anti-inflammatory cytokines expressed by the serum IL-10 and NO showed 29% and 88% higher mean values in the C5 group and 49% and 24% higher in the C10 group than those in the HL group, respectively.

In other words, cranberry powder protects the Sprague-Dawley male rats induced inflammation by elevating the levels of anti-inflammatory and lowering the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Collectively, researchers wrote, " freeze-dried cranberry powder may have beneficial effects on cardiovascular diseases by modifying serum lipids and the early inflammatory response."

Taken together, cranberry may be considered an anti-inflammatory remedy, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal #Bilberry Promotes HealthAging by Enhaning the Ratio of Gut Microbiota, Researchers Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Aging is the natural and biological process of growing older.
You can not stop the aging clock, but, you can delay the progression by taking some preventive actions, including living a healthy lifestyle accompanied by moderate exercise.

Healthy aging refers to the creation of a series of conditions that allow the aging population to live functionally without affected by serious chronic diseases or medical conditions (that are well managed).

The World Health Organization in the definition of healthy aging wrote, "healthy aging as the process of developing and maintaining the functional ability that enables wellbeing in older age” and "Functional ability is about having the capabilities that enable all people to be and do what they have reason to value".

In other words, healthy aging must comprise all the mental and physical capacities such as the ability to walk, think, see, hear, and remember, particularly in bathing, dressing, and other independent living skills, such as shopping and housework.

Dr. Ruth Elaine Nieuwenhuis-Mark in the study of healthy aging as a disease wrote, "A popular theory in the aging literature since the early 1990s is the socioemotional selectivity theory (SST; Carstensen, 1992). SST was put forward as an attempt to explain the so-called “paradox of aging” which refers to the finding that while physical health tends to decline as we age subjective well-being may be maintained or even improve (Diener and Suh, 1998)".

And, "Focusing on normal aging as a disease could, therefore, be seen as a step-back for aging research rather than a move forward. Aging-as-disease proponents would argue however that their focus is on improving quality of life in our final years, not on increasing our lifespans per se".

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant has been used as an herb in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

Researchers aim to a natural compound that processes antiaging property examine the effects of bilberry anthocyanin extract consumption in healthy aging and intestinal barrier function and digestive enzyme activity, through regulating the gut microbiota in aging rats.

The study included aging rats fed with the medium-dose bilberry anthocyanin extract (20 mg per kg bw per day) in the regulation of the intestinal function.

Consumption of the extract showed strong activity in the gut by allowing the bacteria beneficial in the intestine (Aspergillus oryzae, Lactobacillus, Bacteroides, Clostridiaceae-1, the Bacteroidales-S24-7-group, and the Lachnospiraceae_NK4A136_group) to grow, and inhibiting the growth of harmful bacteria (Verrucomicrobia and Euryarchaeota).

However, high-dose bilberry anthocyanin extract consumption was found to induce a negative effect in alternating some intestinally beneficial bacteria.

Furthermore, bilberry anthocyanin extract consumption also decreased the activity of digestive enzymes in breaking down food correlated to the changes in bacterial composition, short-chain fatty acids, and the intestinal mucosal barrier.

In other words, bilberry anthocyanin extract consumption improved the digestive function without affecting the activity of the digestive enzyme which has been found in low levels in people with digestive problems including the aging population.

Dr. Li J, the lead scientist said, " bilberry anthocyanin extract consumption is a potential approach for assisting healthy aging".

The finding suggested that bilberry anthocyanin extract has a significant anti-aging effect by optimizing the function of the digestive system through a wide range of mechanisms, including bacterial composition.

Taken together, bilberry processed abundantly bioactive compound anthocyanin may be considered an anti-aging remedy, pending the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal #Cleaver Inhibits Diseases Associated with Overpression of Oxidativestress, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Antioxidants are stable atom that plays a critical role in protecting the body against the attack of free radicals in the induction of oxidative stress.
In other words, antioxidants inhibit the onset of free radicals before they can cause a chain reaction in facilitating protein, lipid, and cell damage.

Antioxidants can either produced by the liver or taken from dietary sources. Under normal conditions, antioxidant enzymes produced by the body in a healthy individual are good enough to counter the bombardment of free radical attacks.

However, in people with a weakened immune system, intake of dietary sources of antioxidants may be necessary.

Free radicals are highly reactive molecules with an unpaired electron on the outer ring of the atom.
Due to its nature to become stable, free radicals readily donate or steal an electron from other molecules, leading to the chain of domino effect that can not be stopped until either the electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

This chain of reaction is the cause of oxidative stress, a condition associated with either overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host organs.

Overexpression of free radicals is known to cause damage in contribute to the etiology of many chronic health problems such as cardiovascular and inflammatory disease, cataracts, and cancer.

Oxidative stress is a result of an imbalance in the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body.

Cleaver is a herbaceous annual plant, genus Galium, belonging to the family Rubiaceae, native to North America and Eurasia. The herb has been used over thousands of years in herbal and traditional medicine as a mild diuretic and blood and lymphatic cleanser to treat psoriasis, skin conditions, glands, tonsillitis, bladder infections, prevent small kidney stones, etc.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers compared the phenolic content and the antioxidant activity of Anthyllis vulneraria L., Fuchsia sp., Galium mollugo L., and Veronica beccabunga L.

According to the chemical analysis, the Galium mollugo polyphenol tannin, and flavonoid contents are 1.77 ± 0.05, 0.49 ± 0.04 and 0.16 ± 0.06 g/100 g dry weight) compared to those of Fuchsia species of 7.40 ± 0.8, 5.62 ± 0.7 and 0.72 ± 0.1 g/100 g dry weight and Anthyllis vulneraria (0.68 ± 0.02, 0.17 ± 0.03 and 0.45 ± 0.01 g/100 g dry weight., respectively.

More precisely, herbal cleaver(Galium aparine) showed a higher total polyphenol, tannin, and flavonoid contents than A. vulneraria but lower, compared to those of Fuchsia sp.

In other words, all antioxidant compounds found in herbal cleaver(Galium aparine) work together to exert anti-free radical activity in the stimulation of the onset of oxidative stress.

Taken together, Cleaver processed an antioxidant activity against the risk of oxidative stress, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal #Chastetreeberry Process Male Infertile Substance for Contraceptive Purposes, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Recent study by a renowned institute suggested that Chaste tree berry may have a potential in improved male infertility as a contraceptive functional food.

Infertility is a condition of the inability of a couple to conceive after 12 months of unprotected sexual intercourse. It affects over 5 million couples alone in the U. S. and many times more in the world. Because of unawareness of treatments, only 10% seek help from a professional specialist.

Chaste tree berry is a species of Vitex agnus-castus, genus Vitex, belonging to the family Lamiaceae, native to the Mediterranean region, used in herbal medicine for thousands of years as anaphrodisiac herb and considered as Queen herb in treating menstrual problems and discomforts.

According to the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, flavonoid-rich seed extracts of Chaste tree berry oral administration promoted sperm numbers dwindling and slackness in their motility that may impede fertility.

In extract-fed male rats with four different concentrations after 15 days, treatment of all concentrations displayed a drop in weight with a marginal chance of fructose in seminal vesicles and epididymal alpha-glucosidase, probably involved in reducing the fertilizing ability of the spermatozoa.

Dr. Das S, the lead author said, "the seedextracts of V. negundo interfere with male reproductive function without producing adverse toxicity in other vital organs".

Interestingly, the same extract used in testing the antiandrogenic effects in dog model, administrated dogs showed a antagonized androgen action of exogenous testosterone on the male reproductive system, reducing sexual design and impeded sperm production and mobility.

In the duration of treatment of 30 and 60 days, the extract causes a disruption of the latter stages of spermatogenesis with devoid of spermatozoa passed through epididymides.

Furthermore, when the extract is used in combination with testosterone propionate, an ester of propionic acid,. dogs maintained the viability of spermatozoa with significantly increased cellular heights of epididymides in compared non treatment dogs.

Taken together, chaste tree berry intake may act as an infertile substance for males to prevent unwanted pregnancy of female partners, but the use of herbal medicine for contraceptive purposes should only recommended by herbalists.

#Herbal Bilberry Shows a Significant Effect on Skin Flux and Edema Score on Varicose Veins , According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Varicose veins are a medical condition in which the superficial veins have become enlarged and twisted.
The condition has been found to induce bleeding or superficial thrombophlebitis if left untreated.

The most common causes of varicose veins are found just under the skin in the legs, leading to the symptoms of fullness and pain in the affected location accompanied by symptoms of achy or heavy feeling in the legs. The pain is also worsened after a long time of sitting or standing for a long time and skin discoloration around the area.

Some patients with painful varicose veins also experience symptoms of burning, throbbing, muscle cramping, swelling in the lower legs, and itching.

Out of many risk factors associated with the onset of varicose veins, aging due to wear and tear on the valves in the veins that help regulate blood flow may be one of the most common risk factors.

Dr. Caggiati A in the study of age-related variations of varicose veins, wrote, "Varicose SVs were more frequent in the older group (62%) than in younger one (39%) owing to a higher prevalence of limbs with combined saphenous veins (SVs) and Stributaries of the SVs (STVs) varicosities (respectively, 59% and 37%)".

And, "varicose disease may progressively extend in an antegrade fashion, spreading from the STVs to the SVs".

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient for the treatment of varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), researchers compared the efficacy of Pycnogenol, venoraton, troxerutin, the complex diosmin-hesperidin, Antistax, Mirtoselect (bilberry), escin, and the combination Venoruton-Pycnogenol (VE-PY) against the therapeutic compressions.

The study included 1,051 patients who completed the registry. During the experiment, there were no safety or tolerability problems observed.

Mirtoselect (bilberry) showed a significant effect on skin flux but to a lesser extent compared to those of Venoruton, Pycnogenol, and the combination VE-PY.

The edema score was decreased more effectively with the combination and with Pycnogenol compared to the other treatment group including the Mirtoselect (bilberry).

According to the improvement in symptoms score, Pycnogenol and compression showed a larger decrease in oxidative stress compared to the Pycnogenol, Venoruton, Mirtoselect (bilberry), and with the VE-PY combination.

However, the efficacy of Pycnogenol and the combination are competitive with stockings that do not have the same tolerability in warmer climates compared to other groups.

The findings suggested that the tested compounds processed anti-chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) and varicose veins properties.

Taken altogether, Mirtoselect (bilberry) may be considered a functioning remedy for the treatment of varicose veins with no side effects, pending the validation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal Ashwagandha Inhibts the Onset of Neuro-Inflammatory Diseases, Scientists Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

The central system is the complex of nerve tissues including the brain and spinal cord with functions to respond to the integrating sensory information.

Inflammation is a natural response of the immune system in which the macrophages of the first defense stimulate the production of a blood palette to cover the wound in case of injury and production of proinflammatory cytokines to the site of infection to fence off the foreign pathogens.

Inflammation also can be triggered by the immune mistakenly attacking the body tissues in cases of autoimmune disease.

Neuroinflammation is a process of the immune system that responds to harmful pathogens that induce oxidative stress in the brain.

A nerve cell is a brain cell specialized in transmitting nerve impulses.

Neuroinflammation is a medical condition characterized by the inflammation of the central nervous tissues, including the brain and spinal cord.

There many risk factors associated with the onset of neuroinflammation similar to other tissues inflammation, including infection, traumatic brain injury, toxic metabolites, or autoimmunity.

In other words, neuroinflammation is a complex response to brain injury involving the activation of inflammatory cytokines and chemokines, and generation of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species.

Overnutrition in the Western world may be one of the main culprits associated with the widespread neuroinflammation in the aging population.

Neuroinflammatory disease can be acute or chronic. Chronic neuroinflammation that leads to the activation of glial cells and the recruitment of inflammatory cytokines into the brain is found to be associated with neurodegenerative diseases.

Most cases of neuroinflammatory disease are associated with the loss of neuronal structure and function. can be measured by the typical inflammatory markers, including CSF Aβ1-42, tau, and p-tau181, and a panel of 37 neuroinflammatory markers in patients with Alzheimer's disease.

Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

In the urgency to discover a natural ingredient for the prevention of chronic inflammatory diseases, researchers examined the neuroprotective activity of Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) against the inflammation associated with neurodegeneration and cognitive impairments induced by systemic LPS administration using an in vivo rat model system.

The study included young adult Wistar strain male albino rats randomized into four groups: (i) Control, (ii) LPS alone, (iii) LPS + ASH-WEX, (iv) ASH-WEX alone.

According to the tested analysis, orally administered ASH-WEX not only significantly suppressed the cognitive and motor-coordination impairments in rats, but also regulated the expression of various proteins involved in synaptic plasticity and neuronal cell survival.

In LPS-mediated microglial activation-induced damage to neurons via direct cell to cell contact or through secretion of inflammatory mediators, the application of ASH-WEX and FIV pretreatment restored neurite outgrowth and protect neurons from apoptotic cell death.

In other words, LPS-induced neuroinflammation activated in microglial-conditioned medium-treated neuronal cultures and microglial-neuronal co-culture were significantly demolished by the application of ASH-WEX.

Collectively, researchers said, "ASH-WEX can be used as a promising natural therapeutic remedial for the prevention of neurodegeneration and cognitive impairments associated with peripheral inflammation and neuroinflammation".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of neuroinflammation, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
