Regular and daily moderate green tea intake may have a potential effect on increasing the lifespan in humans, some scientists suggested.
Some researchers suggested that human longevity without health issues can be achieved through a healthy diet and lifestyle.
Dr. Small GW, the lead author in the study "A short-term healthy lifestyle program combining mental and physical exercise, stress reduction, and healthy diet was associated with significant effects on cognitive function and brain metabolism. Reduced resting activity in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex may reflect the greater cognitive efficiency of a brain region involved in working memory".
Would these results be enough for a person to live longer and healthier?
Eating the right foods can lead to a longer, healthier life. Some researchers recommended the following diet for the elderly for liver longevity without some major health issues.
* A basic heart-healthy diet including fruits and vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy products like yogurt and cheese, skinless poultry, lots of fish nuts, and beans, and non-tropical vegetable oils can help to control your weight because more than a third of people 65 and older are obese, the major cause of diabetes, some cancers, and heart disease.
* A basic brain-healthy diet including lean meats, deep-sea fish, skim milk products, and some whole-grain cereals that reduce the risk of neurodegenerative disease can improve memory.
* A basic protein diet to build the muscle diet including low-fat or fat-free yogurt, cheese, milk, lean meats, fish, other seafood, and beans.
* A basic diet including calcium and vitamin D in fortified foods, fish like salmon, and dairy products. to build the bone.
In the study to reaffirm the effect of green tea in increasing lifespan in various experimental animal models, researchers at the University of California Irvine launched an investigation to examine whether green tea acts to increase the lifespan of the fruit fly by modulating iron regulators, specifically, mitoferrin, a mitochondrial iron transporter, and transferrin, found in the hemolymph of flies
Application of green tea increased the lifespan of transferrin mutant lifespan but not the mitoferrin mutants and fertility, compared to the increased male fly lifespan and reduced male fertility in the non-mutant group.
These results suggested that green tea may act to increase the lifespan of Drosophila in part by the regulation of mitoferrin and reduction of mitochondrial iron.
Continued to the above investigation, researchers found that the lifespan extension properties of green tea were only observed in the presence of females which alludes to a reproductive (or mating) dependent mechanism.
Furthermore, the application of green tea exerted a strong and negative impact on male fertility as shown by a reduced number of offspring produced and increased mating latency
These correlations suggested that green tea extends the lifespan of male flies by inhibiting reproductive potential, possibly by limiting iron uptake.
Researchers in the final report indicated green tea may have a profound effect in increasing lifespan but a negative effect on reproductive fitness in humans.
Moreover, in the study of a standardized epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) rich green tea extract (comprising > 90% EGCG) effects on fitness and lifespan as well as parameters of glucose metabolism and energy homeostasis in the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, researchers found that
* The application of the green tea extract demonstrates a significant increase in the mean lifespan (+ 3.3 days) and 50% survival (+ 4.3 days) as well as improved fitness
* These effects went along an increased expression of Spargel, the homolog of mammalian PGC1α whose dysfunction is associated with accelerated aging, decreased mobility and decreased lifespan.
* Treatment with the green tea extract decreased glucose concentrations.
Dr. Wagner AE, the lead scientist said, "A decrease in glucose metabolism in connection with an upregulated expression of Spargel contributes to better fitness and the extended lifespan in EGCG-treated flies".
Taken together, green tea may have a profound effect in increasing lifespan in human, depending on the confirmation of further data collection from the large example size and multi-center studies.

#Herbal Cascara Sagrada's Aloe-Emodin Cuts Off Energy Supply and Suppress the Growth of Prostate Cancer Cells
Kyle J. Norton
Cascara sagrada may have a potential effect in inhibiting the onset and progression of prostate cancer, some scientists suggested.
Prostate cancer is medical a condition in which the cells of the prostate have become cancerous, causing abnormal cell growth which spreads to distant parts of the body.
Most prostate cancers are slow-growing and enlarged prostate and prostate cancer may be detected during Physical (rectum) exams. However, some protatecancers can grow and become invasive quickly.
According to the study of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, metastasis to the bone caused by tumor/microenvironment interactions remains the major cause of death in advanced prostate cancer(3).
In other words, this invasion may be a result of certain cancer cells that can reseed the primary site and gain more metastatic potential in the process.
The exact causes of prostate cancer are unknown, however, certain conditions may be associated with increased risk of prostate cancer, including age, ethnic group, family history,... and obesity.
Some researchers suggested that a diet high in calcium is linked to an increased risk of developing prostate cancer and a maternal high-fat diet (HFD) is associated with an increased risk of children's prostate cancer(4).
Most patients may not experience any symptoms until the advanced stage.
The most common symptoms include frequent urination, loss of bladder control such as weak or interrupted urine flow or the need to strain to empty the bladder, and the urge to urinate frequently at night. In severe cases, patients may also find blood in the urine and loss of erection.
Cascara sagrada is a species of buckthorn, genus Rhamnus, belonging to the family Rhamnaceae, native to western North America,
The herbal bark has been used in traditional medicine for gastrointestinal support. and it is thought to have a laxative and natural cleansing, etc..
The Ingredients
The chemical constituents of Cascara Sagrada include Aloe-emodin, Anthrquinone glycosides (Barbaloin Cascarosides A, B, C and D ChrysaloinFrangul), Chrysophanol, Emodin, Heterodianthrones palmidin A, B, and C, dianthrones, Oxanthrone, Rhein, Tannins, etc.
Aloe-emodin, a chemical constituent found in Cascara Sagrada is found to inhibit both proliferation and anchorage-independent growth of PC3 cells by targeting the protein complex that plays an impotant role in stimulated cancer cell metabolism (mTORC2) for survival and expansion.
Further analysis also found that application of aloe-emodin also suppressed the function of Protein kinase B, (Akt) of cancer cell in signalling protection of cell survival, increased cell cycle progression and cellular growth and protein kinase C alpha (PKCα) in promotion of cancer cell migration.
Dr. Liu K, the lead author at The World Class Institute and Chemical Biology Research Center at the end of the experiment wrote, " Aloe-emodin (also) exhibited tumor suppression effects in vivo in an athymic nude mouse model" and "Collectively, our data suggest that mTORC2 plays an important role in prostate cancer development and aloe-emodin suppresses prostate cancer progression by targeting mTORC"
Epidemiologically, emodin (ED), another bioactive compound found in cascara sagrada, also processed anti proliferation and induced apoptosis, suppressed angiogenesis, impeded metastasis, and enhanced chemotherapy.
In DU145 and A549 cells, the application of emodin suppressed the expression of both mutation gene CXCR4 and HER2 which are associated to prorate cancer risk without affecting cell viability in tumor cells and protects healthy cell integrity against mutated gene CXCL12 in the induction of cancer cells migration and invasion.
Additional differentiation suggested, that the efficacy of emodin in inhibiting mutated gene expression of prostate cancer was attributed to the bioactive activity in the prevention of cancer cells in promoted mRNA expression and suppressed of NF-κB in the activation of cancer cell proliferation.
These results indicated that emodin may have the potential used as a novel blocker of CXCR4 expression as well as a powerful therapeutic agent for metastatic cancer.
The findings showed that, herbal Cascara Sagrada (Rhamnus purshiana) with bioactive components that have strong effects in inhibited prostate cancer cells may be considered as functional foods for treatment of prostate cancer.

#Herbal Turmeric's Curcumin Inhibits the Onset of #Osteoporosis, Researchers Say
Kyle J. Norton
Osteoporosis is a medical condition characterized by the loss of bone density.
In other words, bone disease is a result of overexpression of bone loss due to bone resorption compared to bone made by the body, leading to the risk of bone fracture and breaking.
In a severe case, bones of patients with osteoporosis may become so weak, they can break from a fall or even from sneezing or minor bumps.
Microscopy, healthy bone processed a high density (fewer spaces and small holes in the honeycomb) compared to low density ( large spaces and holes in a honeycomb) in the patients with osteoporosis.
In the US, due to the widespread osteoporosis in the elderly, the disease has become a concern of the scientific community. Believe it or not, according to the statistics, osteoporosis is responsible for two million broken bones and $19 billion in related costs every year.
As the condition continues to worsen, by 2025, osteoporosis will be responsible for approximately three million fractures and $25.3 billion in costs annually.
According to the statistics, in Canada, osteoporosis affects approximately 1.4 million Canadians, mainly in postmenopausal women and the elderly.
Additionally, 1 in 4 women and more than 1 in 8 men over the age of 50 years, with 1 in 4 men and women are having evidence of a vertebral fracture.
Out of many risk factors associated with the onset of osteoporosis, some researchers suggested that the disease may be correlated to the promotion of Western diet over the past few decades.
Dr. Seon-Joo Park, the lead scientist wrote, "(In the comparison of ) "Three major dietary patterns,... using factor analysis based on baseline intake data: traditional (high intake of rice, kimchi, and vegetables), dairy (high intake of milk, dairy products, and green tea), and western (high intake of sugar, fat, and bread).".
And, "..., western dietary pattern (p-trend = 0.043 in radius) demonstrated a higher risk of osteoporosis incidence than those in the lowest quintile".
Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.
The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
In finding a natural compound for the treatment of osteoporosis, researchers evaluated the efficacy, in terms of changes in bone density, and safety of an oral formulation based on turmeric phytosome (Meriva®), in subjects suffering from low bone density.
The study included a total of 57 otherwise healthy subjects with low bone density who freely decided to follow either standard management (SM) to control low bone density (control group=28) or SM associated with a curcumin-based oral supplementation (supplement group=29).
Meriva®-supplemented group remarkably improved in the bone density of the heel measured by the Sahara densitometer accompanied by a significant decrease of ultrasound transmission values at week 12 (-18.4%) and at week 24 (-21.0%), compared with baseline.
Furthermore, Meriva®-supplemented group also improved the bone densities of the small fingers and upper jaw with no adverse effects.
Based on the results researchers said, "This preliminary study suggests that a curcumin-based supplementation in combination with an appropriate lifestyle could be beneficial in the prevention and management of osteopenia".
In order to know more information about turmeric anti-osteoporosis activity, researchers examined the effects of curcumin on oxidative stress-induced osteoblast apoptosis.
The study included an osteoblastic cell line (Saos-2) exposed to various concentrations of H2O2 with or without curcumin treatment.
Injection of curcumin protected the viability of Saos-2 cells against the exposure to H2O2 and attenuated H2O2-induced apoptosis.
Furthermore, curcumin also improved the cellular function by preserving the mitochondrial redox potential, decreasing the mitochondrial oxidative status, through its antioxidants activity.
Moreover, curcumin treatment markedly increased levels of phosphorylated protein kinase B (Akt) and phosphorylated glycogen synthase kinase-3β (GSK3β) that have been found to induced bone loss in low levels.
Taken together, turmeric processed with a high amount of bioactive compound curcumin may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of curcumin in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Cinnamon Reduces Parameters Associated with the Onset of #Hyperlipidemia, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
Intake of cinnamon is found to improve levels of blood cholesterol in patients with Hyperlipidemia.
According to the Shaanxi Provincial People's Hospital, cinnamaldehyde (CA), an active and major compound in cinnamon reduced levels of triglyceride, cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), and increased high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), in C57BLKS/J db/db mice.
Cinnamon is a spice derived from the inner bark of a tree, native to South East Asia, of over 300 species of the genus Cinnamomum, belonging to the familyLauraceae, used in herbal and traditional medicine as an anti-fungal and bacterial level, to improve reproductive organ, prevent flatulence and intestinal cramping, and to treat indigestion, diarrhea, bad breath, headache, migraine, etc.
Hyperlipidemia is abnormally elevated levels of any or all lipids or lipoproteins in the blood.
Also in C57BL/Ks db/db mice study, the cinnamon extract significantly improved hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia possibly by regulating the protein with function in medicated glucose and lipid metabolism.
Furthermore, in rats fed a high-fat diet (HFD), oral administration of cinnamon polyphenol extract reduced hyperlipidemia, inflammation, and oxidative stress by activating the proteins involved in transferring genetic information of DNA into RNA and the antioxidative defense signaling pathway.
Dr. Ghorbani A, the lead author of a joint study said, "The levels of triglyceride and total cholesterol in polyherbal mixture treated rats were significantly lower than those in the diabetic control group (P < 0.05)" and "Our results demonstrated that this polyherbal mixture has beneficial effects on blood glucose and lipid profile and it has the potential to be used as a dietary supplement for the management of diabetes"
With all the information collected, cinnamon may have potency in reducing levels of triglycerides, LDL cholesterol, and increased HDL cholesterol in patients with hyperlipidemia. Still, the use of high quantities should only be given by herbalists in the prevention of toxicity.

#CascaraSagrada Aloe-Emodin Inhibits Proteins Associated with the Apoptosis of Primary #Glioblastoma Cells, Scientists Suggest
Kyle J. Norton
Cascara sagrada is a species of buckthorn, genus Rhamnus, belonging to the family Rhamnaceae, native to western North America, its bark has been used in traditional medicine for gastrointestinal support. and it is thought to have a laxative and natural cleansing, etc.
Bone cancer is an abnormal growth of cells within the bone that have become cancerous. Bone cancer may be classified as primary cancer originating in the bone, and secondary cancer originating from elsewhere.
The health benefits of Aloe-emodin have been found to be effective in induced cell anti-proliferation and apoptosis in some cancer cell lines. In U87 human malignant glioma cells, the chemical constituent found in Cascara Sagrada,
Aloe-emodin also arrested the cell cycle in the synthesis phase of the cell cycle and promoted the loss of mitochondrial membrane potential in U87 cells, leading to early events of the mitochondria-induced apoptotic pathway.

Other studies of dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO; control) or aloe-emodin (40 microM) showed the effect of Aloe-emodin in inducing apoptosis in U-373MG glioma cells by suppressed PKC(a family of protein) activity and reduced the protein content of most of the PKC isozymes. These results support the positive effect of aloe-emodin and may be considered as a potential agent in treating human malignant glioma cells.

#Herbal Turmeric's Curcumin and Calendula's #Extract Inhibit Pro Inflammatory Cytokines Associated with the Onset of Chronic Prostatitis, Researchers Say
Kyle J. Norton
Prostatitis is a condition associated with the inflammation of the prostate and the areas around the prostate.
According to the statistics provided by the American Family Physician, approximately 8.2 percent of men in the US are living with prostatitis. The conditions account for 8 percent of visits to urologists, and up to 1 percent of visits to primary care physicians.
Believe it or not, in 2000, prostatitis cost over $84 million, including the charge of diagnosis and treatment.
The most common symptoms of prostatitis are painful, difficult, and/or frequent urinating, groin pain, rectal pain, abdominal pain and/or low back pain, fever, chills, and body aches.
In severe cases, patients may also experience symptoms of urethral discharge, painful ejaculation or sexual dysfunction, and blood in the urine.
The exact causes of prostatitis are not identified, some researchers suggested that nerve damage in the lower urinary tract caused by surgery or trauma to the area has been found to induce prostatitis in patients.
Conventionally, most cases of prostatitis are treated by antibiotics in cases of infection, alpha-blockers to relax the bladder neck, and the muscle fibers, and anti-inflammatory medicine to ease pain and discomforts.
With an aim to find a potential and natural ingredient for the treatment of inflammatory diseases such as chronic prostatitis/ chronic pelvic pain syndrome type III (CP/CPPS), researchers examined the effect of turmeric on chronic bacterial prostatitis.
Phase II, the randomized, single-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical trial included 60 patients who were examined by the University of Catania from June 2015 to January 2016 we enrolled 60 consecutive due to CP/CPPS III.
At the end of the experiment, the treatment group showed a significant improvement in National Institutes of Health Chronic Prostatitis Symptom Index, IIEF-5 (+ 3.5; p < 0.01), particularly other symptomatic parameters compared to placebo.
Participants were then allocated to receive treatment (Group A) or placebo(Group B). Treatment consisted of rectal suppositories of Curcumin extract 350 mg (95%) and Calendula extracts 80 mg (1 suppository/die for 1 month). Patients of Group B received 1 suppository/die for 1 month of placebo.
The efficacy of the treatment with Curcumin and Calendula was associated with the reduction of inflammatory cytokines and inflammatory cells.
Based on the findings, Dr. Morgia G, the lead researcher said, "In this phase II clinical trial, we showed the clinical efficacy of the treatment with Curcumin and Calendula in patients with CP/CPPS III".
Taken together, turmeric used alone or combined with Calendula may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of chronic bacterial prostatitis and chronic pelvic pain syndrome, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Carrots Inhibit Parameters Associated with a Reduced Risk of #OralDiseases, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
Scientists may have found a phytochemical isolated from carrots which process a significant potential to act as a nonsurgical aid in the treatment of oral diseases, some studies suggested.
Oral diseases are groups of a medical condition, including dental cavities, periodontal (gum) disease, oral cancer, oral infectious diseases, trauma from injuries, and hereditary lesions.
Some researchers suggested that oral health is an important part of your overall health.
The Ireland Dental Health Association in the article Links between oral & general health wrote, "A healthy mouth enables not only nutrition of the physical body but also enhances social interaction and promotes self-esteem and feelings of well-being" and "Bacteria from the mouth can cause infection in other parts of the body when the immune system has been compromised by disease or medical treatment".
Therefore, maintaining healthy oral health may result in reducing the risk that links the oral disease to other health problems such as diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.
Truly, there are some tips that may help you to prevent oral health problems, including visiting your dentist one to two times a year for a cleaning and checkup. brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste a minimum of two times per day, replace your toothbrush or toothbrush head every three to four months, and floss at least once per day, according to the article published on Health Line.
Carrot, a root vegetable with an orange color is a subspecies of Daucus carota, belonging to the family Apiaceae, native to Asian and Europe.
In the aim to find a natural pigment with potential to improve the oral health, researchers at the Swami Devi Dyal Hospital and Dental College conducted an experiment on some of the various classes of pigments in nature, particularly, the pigment lycopene, a red plant pigment found in tomatoes, apricots, guavas, carrots, watermelons, papayas, and pink grapefruits, with tomatoes being the largest contributor to the dietary intake of humans.
Application of lycopene not only exhibits higher antioxidant activity through the ability as singlet oxygen quenching phytochemical, but also exerts a multifunctional role as a nonsurgical aid in the treatment of oral diseases like leukoplakia, oral submucous fibrosis, lichen planus, oral squamous cell carcinoma, and also prevents the destruction of periodontal tissues.
The findings suggested adding 1 or 2 portions of tomatoes into your daily diet can provide absolute protection for your oral health.
Furthermore, in the examine the link between chronic periodontitis (CP), a multifactorial infect-inflammatory disease caused by the interaction of microbial agents present in the biofilm and oxidative stress (OS), an imbalance of the ratio between free radicals and antioxidant enzymes produced by the host body, researchers at the Federal University Rio Grande do Sul conducted a randomized, controlled, double-blind or blind studies to evaluate the effect of selected antioxidant
in chronic periodontitis patients.
Antioxidant including in the study are lycopene, vitamin C, vitamin E, capsules with fruits/vegetables/berry.
At the final report of the experiment, researchers indicated that only lycopene and vitamin E demonstrated statistically significant improvement when compared to a control group in terms of periodontal parameters.
These results were observed through oxidative stress patterns throughout the study. As only lycopene and vitamin E showed a reduction in the levels of oxidative stress compared to others.
Moreover, in the evaluation of the effect of lycopene along with routine scaling and root planing in terms of changes in clinical parameters and levels of circulating tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), salivary interleukin 1beta (IL-1ß), and uric acid in chronic periodontitis, researchers launched a randomized, placebo-controlled, parallel design, double-blinded trial in a total of 42 subjects/
Out of 42 subjects were assigned to the test group (n = 21) received 8 mg lycopene/day and placebo group (n = 21) along with adjunctive scaling and root planing. Patients were monitored at baseline and at 2 months after therapy.
At the end of the study, researchers found that test group (Lycopene) showed better results after therapy compared to the placebo group with all assays, including Periodontal parameters regarding plaque index (PI), modified gingival index (MGI), bleeding on probing (BOP).
Although the serum TNF-α value, the pro-inflammatory cytokine was not statistically significant, it, however, showed an improvement compared to the placebo group.
Taken together, tomato and carrot processed abundant phytochemical lycopene may be an adjunct therapy combined with conventional medicine for the prevention and treatment of oral diseases.
Therefore, adding 2 or 3 portions of tomatoes or carrots or intake of lycopene supplement, according to the guideline on a regular basis may give you a perfect breath and oral health.
