#Healthyfood #Onion's Sulfur Compounds in the Inhibition of Type 2 #Diabetes, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Diabetes is a chronic medical condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream.
Type 2 diabetes (acquired diabetes), is a condition caused by either the pancreas doesn't produce enough insulin, or the insulin does not work properly due to dysfunction of the insulin receptors.

In other words, type 2 diabetes is associated with the levels of insulin that were either blocked by the clog-up of the insulin receptors by fat and cholesterol or the death of beta cells which produce insulin in the pancreas.

Epidemiologically, the most common symptoms of diabetes are increased thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, stomach pain, heartburn, diarrhea, constipation, nausea, and vomiting.

However, some patients may also experience symptoms of blurred vision, depression, sleeping difficulties, appetite problems, and emotional stress.

Most common causes of diabetes are
* Metabolic syndrome, the cluster of conditions associated with the risk of diabetes, including high blood cholesterol, sugar, and blood pressure.

* Compared to type 2 diabetes, prediabetes is a condition of elevated blood sugar levels that are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes.

According to statistics, approximately 6 million or 13% of Canadians have prediabetes. Prediabetes if left unmanaged can develop into type 2 diabetes.

* Gestational diabetes, a condition of high blood glucose of pregnant women who are experiencing the symptoms only during pregnancy as a result of hormonal change

* Damage to the pancreas associated with reduced numbers or death of the beta cells.

* Influenza A viruses that commonly cause pancreatitis in naturally and experimentally infected animals.

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, which a close relation of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.

Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild or sweet.

On finding a potent ingredient for the prevention of diabetes, researchers evaluated the effect of aqueous extract of garlic, white onion, and purple onion on subjects with diabetes.

Elevated levels of α-amylase and α-glucosidase involved in levels of blood glucose were inhibited by the aqueous extract of garlic, purple onion, and white onion in a concentration-dependent manner (0-4 mg/ml).

Additional differentiation also suggested that white onion had significantly (p < .05) stronger inhibitory effect on α-amylase (IC50 = 3.93 mg/mL) compared to those of garlic (IC50 = 8.19 mg/ml) and purple onion (IC50 = 8.27 mg/ml).

Furthermore, all aqueous extracts showed a significant activity to scavenge 2,2- diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH*) free radical and reduce Fe3+ to Fe2+ in a dose-dependent manner.

Based on the findings, researchers concluded, "a possible mechanism by which garlic, white onion, and purple onion exert antidiabetes,,, properties could be through the inhibitory effect on... α-amylase, and α-glucosidase coupled with their ability to prevent lipid peroxidation in the pancreas and heart, which justify their strong antioxidant properties".

In chemical analysis, sulfur compounds including S-methyl cysteine and flavonoids such as quercetin found in onion also are responsible for the hypoglycemic activity.

S-methyl cysteine and flavonoids found in onion not only decreased the levels of blood glucose, serum lipids, oxidative stress but also increased antioxidant enzyme activity and insulin secretion.

More importantly, in preliminarily clinical trials, patients with diabetes safely consumed slices of Allium cepa, including onion exhibited sufficient hypoglycemic activity.

Taken altogether, onion used alone or combined with garlic may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of diabetes, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Healthyfood #Tomato Delays Lung Function Decline and Improves Lung Function, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

The lung-formed part of the circulatory system plays an essential and unique role in taking oxygen to the blood and exhaling carbon dioxide from the blood.
Additionally, the lung also processes other abilities in protecting our body against disease, including
* By balancing the pH levels, the lung protects the body against the accumulation of too much carbon dioxide. High levels of carbon dioxide are known to induce acidity in the body.

* By removing small blood clots the lung protects the body against the forming of air embolisms.

* The airflow produced by the lungs also helps us to speak.

* The lung also protects the infection through the secretion of immunoglobulin A.

Any part of the lung injury can reduce lung function, leading to either obstructive or restrictive lung diseases or mixed lung disease, depending on a person's breathing.

* Obstructive lung diseases are conditions in which the lungs are unable to expel air properly during exhalation. Diseases associated with obstruction lung diseases include asthma, bronchiectasis, COPD, and emphysema.

* Restrictive lung diseases are a condition of decreased lung capacity or volume. Diseases associated with restrictive lung diseases include idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Sarcoidosis, an autoimmune disease.

* Mixed lung diseases are most common in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Tomato is a red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.

With an aim to find a natural and potential remedy for the improvement of lung function, researchers examined tomato intake on the relationship between lung function decline and dietary antioxidants over 10 years in adults from three European countries.

According to the questionnaire and underwent spirometry (forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC)), there is an association between annual lung function decline (mL) and diet (tertiles).
In other words, tomato intake was also associated with a slower decline in FVC (4.5 mL·year-1; 95% CI 1.28, 8.02).

Compared to banana and apple intake, only tomato intake remained statistically significant after the Simes' procedure was performed

Intake of tomatoes has also been found to delay lung function decline in adults, particularly in ex-smokers.

Additionally, in patients with allergic rhinitis. associated with abnormal airway function such as an obstruction in large or small airways and increased bronchial reactivity, researchers investigated the oral administration of TE (360 mg per day) or placebo for 8 weeks.

According to the tested assays, the sneezing score significantly decreased in the TE group at the end of the trial compared to the baseline.

TE group also showed a declined tendency of rhinorrhea and nasal obstruction.

Compared to the placebo group, the TE group improved the patient's quality of life significantly after 8 weeks of treatment (P < 0.05).

In other words, TE promoted lung function by improving significantly total symptom scores, combining sneezing, rhinorrhea, and nasal obstruction.

Taken altogether, tomatoes may be considered supplements for the improvement of lung function, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Healthyfood #Leeks Inhibit Pathways Associated with a Reduced Risk of Cancer, Researchers Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of diseases associated with the growth of cells disorderly and uncontrollably due to the alternation of DNA.
Most cases of cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissues of the organ or gland. At the early stage, most cancers are asymptomatic.

However, at the advanced stage, most cancers not can induce common symptoms such as gastrointestinal discomforts, unintended weight loss, loss of appetite, and fatigue but also localized symptoms depending on the affected tissues and organs.

Cancers at this stage also can travel a distance away from the original site to induce secondary metastasis.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2018,1,735,350 new cases were diagnosed, representing more than 4,700 new cancer diagnoses each day.

The lifetime probability of being diagnosed with cancer is 39.7% for men and 37.6% for women.

Angiogenesis is the process that develops new blood vessels from pre-existing vessels by invasive tumors to provide energy(nutrition and fluids) for cancerous cells' growth and proliferation.

Cancers are the second leading cause of death worldwide besides heart diseases.

The most common types of cancer in Canada include lung, colorectal, breast, and prostate cancers. These 4 cancers account for half of all cancers diagnosed in Canada.

Leek is a genius of Allium, belonging to the vegetable family vegetable Alliacaea, the same as onion and garlic. Leeks are easy to grow from seed usually reach maturity in the autumn months, and have few pest or disease problems.

On finding a potential plant that processes anti-tumor growth activity researchers compared the anticancer properties of various sulfur and organic compounds like S-allyl mercaptocysteine, quercetin, flavonoids, and ajoene on cancer.

According to the analysis,
* These compounds with various mechanisms such as hindering the cell cycle, inhibiting signaling pathways, inducing apoptosis, and antioxidant activity interfere with diverse stages of formation, growth, differentiation, and metastasis of cancer cells.

* Similar to garlic and onion, other species such as leeks have exhibited anticancer activities, so active natural molecules extracted from them might serve as possible anticancer agents.

Collectively, researchers said, "In this review, we aim to summarize the available data on anticancer mechanisms of 16 species of Allium genus and their major compounds to assist further research on the treatment and prevention of cancers".

Taken together, leeks may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Papaya Inhibits the Onset of Chronic Inflammatory Diseases by Suppreesing the Production of Pro-Inflammatory Cytokines, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Papaya is found to process anti-acute and chronic inflammatory activity that may be considered an adjunct therapy for the treatment of several chronic diseases, some scientists suggested
Inflammation is the natural response of the immune system macrophages, the first line of defense in stimulating the production of inflammatory cytokines to protect our body against the infection caused by foreign microorganisms during the acute phase of body damage and injury.

Any inflammation that lasts more than 3 months is considered chronic inflammation.

Truly, the main focus of inflammation is to repair damage and injury.

However, overexpression of inflammatory cytokines in most cases can cause improper healing with scar formation or the death of nearby cells.

Chronic inflammation is the result of the immune system's inability to kill off all the microorganisms that participated in the acute phase of infection, leading to the forming of autoimmune and chronic inflammatory diseases such as RA and diabetes.

Inflammation is also can be caused by overexpression of free radicals compared to the antioxidant enzymes in the body. This result can lead to an imbalance of the ratio of the levels of free radicals and antioxidants, the major cause of oxidative stress.

Longer-term oxidative stress in the body can also cause oxidative damage to biomolecules, including lipids, proteins, and DNA that initiate the development of a number of chronic diseases, such as atherosclerosis, cancer, diabetics, rheumatoid arthritis, post-ischemic perfusion injury, myocardial infarction.

Papaya is a species of Carica Papaya, belonging to the family Caricaceae and native to the tropics of the Americas, and was first cultivated in Mexico several centuries

Chemical constituents
Alkaloids, Cardenolides, Anthraquinones, Saponins, Tannin, phenol, flavonoid, anthocyanin, Benzyl glucosinolate, benzylisothiocyanate, 5-(Hydroxymethyl)-2-furancarboxaldehyde, 2,3-dihydro-3,5-dihydroxy-6-methyl-4H-pyran-4-one and 1,3-dihydroxy-2-propanone, etc.(a)

In the reaffirm fruit and vegetables have therapeutic potential as they dampen inflammation with no known side effects, researchers at the Universiti Putra Malaysia launched an evaluation to examine the effect of papaya on the activity of Th1 (IFN-γ(+) CD4(+))/Th2 (IL-4(+)CD4(+)) T cells play in mediating inflammatory responses.

According to the flow cytometry methods. application of papaya exerted a potential effect in down-regulation of IFN-γ(+) CD4(+) (p=0.03, n=13) in the expression of inflammatory markers and up-regulation of IL-4(+) CD4(+) (p=0.04, n=13) T cells, CD3(+) CD4(+) CD25(+) CD127(-) in productiuon of anti inflammatroy sytokines.

Tregs, regulatory T cells (Tregs) are a specialized subpopulation of T cells that act to suppress the immune response in the production of the proteins related to inflammation, which were found after papaya consumption.

In vitro cultures, papaya up-regulates Tregs in male subjects and was significantly associated with suppression of the levels of IL-1β and other inflammatory cytokines.

Dr. Abdullah M., the lead author said, "Papaya consumption may exert an anti-inflammatory response mediated through Tregs and have potential in alleviating inflammatory conditions".

Furthermore, in the reconfirmation of papaya anti-inflammatory effect in patients with sepsis, a serious unbalanced hyperinflammatory condition, researchers found that pretreatment of mangiferin (MF), a natural glucosyl xanthone found in papaya inhibits sepsis-activated mitogen-activated protein kinases and nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells signaling, the mediators with function in stimulating the production in elevating inflammatory cytokines.

Moreover, MF dose-dependently also up-regulates the expression and activity of heme oxygenase (HO)-1 which plays a critical role in the prevention of vascular inflammation in the lung of septic mice, leading to the elimination of the septic lung injury.

The findings suggested that MF attenuates sepsis by up-regulation of HO-1 that protects against sepsis-induced ALI through inhibiting inflammatory signaling and proinflammatory mediators

Taken together, papaya and its bioactive compound mangiferin (MF) may be an adjunct therapy combined with conventional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic inflammatory diseases.

#Strawberry Fruit Phenolics Exert a Strong Anti Colon Cancer Effect, Scientists Find

Kyle J. Norton

Strawberry, a delicious fruit may have a profound effect on the prevention and treatment of colon cancer, some studies suggested.
Colon cancer is a chronic medical condition characterized by abnormal cell growth which starts in the lining of colonic tissue. At the advanced stage, the cancerous cells can travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissues and organs through blood and fluid circulation.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, colon cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women in the United States. In 2018, approximately, over 97,000 new cases the cancer were diagnosed, causing about 50,630 deaths.

Early diagnosed with colon cancer have an over 90% of 5 years survival rate.

The exact causes of colon cancer are unknown. However, researchers suggested that chronic inflammation of the intestines such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, and genetic mutation inherited from the parents are some prevalent major risk factors.

Furthermore, age, gender, people with polyps on the inner wall of the colon or rectum, personal and family history, poor diet, and unhealthy lifestyle are also associated with the increased risk of the onset of the disease.

Dr. Junga Lee, the lead scientist in the study "Diet and Lifestyle in Colorectal Cancer Survivors" wrote, "Lifestyle factors that include obesity, physical activity, and diet are emerging as potential critical elements in improving colorectal cancer survival outcomes". and "The association between colorectal cancer mortality and modifiable lifestyle factors is growing in evidence" and

"Changes in individual health behaviors both before and after a diagnosis of colorectal cancer may improve outcomes of survivors. Several studies have indicated that maintaining a normal weight, participating in regular physical activity, and eating a healthy diet may be important preventative steps leading to improved survival outcomes".

These results suggested that a healthy diet accompanied by an active lifestyle not only can prevent the risk of colon cancer but also can increase the survival of people who already are infected by the disease.

In the early onset of cancer, patients may not experience any symptoms. However, if you have symptoms of the change in your bowel habits that last longer than a month, accompanied by rectal bleeding or blood in your stool and persistent abdominal discomfort, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of colon cancer.

Strawberry is a genius of Fragaria × ananassa, belonging to the family Roseaceae. The fruits have been grown all over the world with a suitable climate for commercial profits and health benefits.

In the evaluate the recent discovery that ellagitannins (ETs), a class of hydrolyzable tannins found in some fruits and nuts, including strawberries may have beneficial effects against colon cancer, researchers at the University of Rhode Island launched an investigation to study whether, the efficacy of the ETs was a result from its function on ETs hydrolyzing the release ellagic acid (EA) and was converted by gut microbiota to urolithin A (UA; 3,8-dihydroxy-6H-dibenzopyran-6-one) type metabolites, which may persist in the colon through enterohepatic circulation.

On a human 293T cell line, using a luciferase reporter of canonical Wnt pathway-mediated transcriptional activation, researchers found that ETs isolated from strawberry= 20.5% GAE exerts a significant effect in inhibiting Wnt signaling in alternating healthy cells DNA transcript, the early sign of the onset of colon cancer.

These results suggested that strawberry with abundant bioactive compound ellagitannins (ETs) has a potential against colon carcinogenesis through gut microbiota.

In human colon cancer (CaCo-2) cells, according to the Scottish Crop Research Institute, strawberry extracts of EC 50 values in the range of 25-40 microg/(mL of phenols) demonstrated strong activity against cancer cell proliferation.

Further analysis also found that The anthocyanin-rich fraction in the strawberry extract is considerably less effective than the original extract, whereas the antiproliferative activity is retained in the tannin-rich fraction. such ad ETs.

Additionally, in the examine the hypothesis of consumption of berry fruits, including strawberries ( Fragaria x ananassa Duch.), may have beneficial effects against oxidative stress-mediated diseases such as cancer, researchers found that all 10 phenolics compound isolated from strawberry ( cyanidin-3-glucoside ( 1), pelargonidin (2), pelargonidin-3-glucoside (3), pelargonidin-3-rutinoside (4), kaempferol (5), quercetin (6), kaempferol-3-(6'-coumaroyl)glucoside) (7), 3,4,5-trihydroxyphenyl-acrylic acid (8), glucose ester of ( E)- p-coumaric acid (9), and ellagic acid) display significantly inhibitory activity against human colon cancer cell antiproliferation, by the Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) and luminescent ATP cell viability assays, respectively, through the compound's antioxidant and antiproliferative activities.

Dr. Zhang Y, the lead researcher after taking into account co and confounders said, "This study adds to the growing body of data supporting the bioactivities of berry fruit phenolics and their potential impact on human health".

The findings suggested that people at a higher risk of colon cancer may want to add 1 or 2 portions of strawberries into their daily diet for preventive measures.

Taken together, strawberries processed with high levels of phenolics compound and ellagitannins (ETs) may be considered a functional food in reducing the risk and treatment of colon cancer.

#ManukaHoney Inhibits Oxidativestress Diseases Asssociated with the Production of Pro-Inflammatory Cytokines, Acccording to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Honey may be the next pharmaceutical target to identify the single ingredient medicine for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, some scientists suggested.
Oxidative stress is a result of an imbalance in the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body.

Free radicals are highly reactive molecules with an unpaired electron on the outer ring of the atom.
Due to their nature to become stable, free radicals readily donate or steal an electron from other molecules, leading to the chain of domino effect that can not be stopped until either the electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

This chain of reaction is the cause of oxidative stress, a condition associated with either overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host organs.

Overexpression of free radicals is known to cause damage in contribute to the etiology of many chronic health problems such as cardiovascular and inflammatory disease, cataracts, and cancer.
Antioxidants, on the other hand, are stable molecules with a unique function in the inhibition of oxidation.

Dr. V. Lobo, the lead author in the study "Free radicals, antioxidants, and functional foods: Impact on human health" wrote, " A balance between free radicals and antioxidants is necessary for proper physiological function. If free radicals overwhelm the body's ability to regulate them, a condition known as oxidative stress ensues", and

"Free radicals thus adversely alter lipids, proteins, and DNA and trigger a number of human diseases. Hence the application of an external source of antioxidants can assist in coping with this oxidative stress. Synthetic antioxidants such as butylated hydroxytoluene and butylated hydroxyanisole have recently been reported to be dangerous for human health".

These results suggested that regardless of the causes of the overexpression of free radicals, intake of dietary sources of antioxidants from a supplement, herbs, fruits, and vegetables can be beneficial in restoring the healthy ratio of free radicals and antioxidants and preventing the onset of oxidative stress.

Honey is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid is considered of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweeteners by many people.

In order to understand the honey antioxidant activity which has been under intensified study by the science community, a joint study led by the researchers conducted was conducted in an animal model.

Ethanol-induced gastric ulcers in rats were randomly assigned to control, ethanol (ulcer), omeprazole, and manuka honey.

Honey-treated rats displayed a clinically significant decrease in the ulcer index by completely protecting the mucosa from lesions and preserving gastric mucosal glycoprotein.

Application of manuka honey also decreased gastric mucosal MDA, the marker of oxidative stress and plasma TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 concentrations, the set of proinflammatory cytokines produced by the ethanol injection.

The results were attributed to the manuka honey in stimulating the production of antioxidant enzymes which were suppressed by the injection of ethanol in the tested rats.

The finding suggested that manuka honey exerted a strong antioxidant activity by balancing the ratio of free radicals and antioxidant enzymes in the treatment group.

In other words, manuka honey inhibited the oxidative stress caused by overexpression of free radicals in the initiation of the onset of the ulcer.

Further differentiation to reaffirm the effects of manuka honey in the inhibition of gastric ulcers in the rat model, researchers examined three different concentrations of honey applied to the tested rats.

During the experiment, researchers found that all 3 different concentrations display a strong effect in reducing the mucosal myeloperoxidase activity, lipid peroxidation (MDA), and the inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6) compared to the untreated control group.

In other words, manuka honey protects the rat stomach by inhibiting the overexpression of free radicals and pro-inflammatory cytokines inducing oxidative stress.

Application manuka honey also showed a significant increase in enzymatic (GPx and SOD) and nonenzymatic (GSH) antioxidants which were reduced due to ulcer and levels of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10.

The Flow cytometry assay also indicated that treatment of rats with manuka honey has normalized cell cycle distribution and significantly lowered apoptosis in gastric mucosa.

The information collected strongly supports the use of manuka honey for the treatment of chronic ulcers and the preservation of mucosal glycoproteins.
Dr. Almasaudi SB wrote in the final report, "Its (manuka honey) effects are due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that resulted in a significant reduction of the gastric mucosal MDA, TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 and caused an elevation in IL-10 levels.

Taken together, there is no doubt that manuka honey high in antioxidants can be considered a functional food for the prevention and combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress.

#Eggplant Inhibits Matrices, Pathways and microRNA-21 Associated with Reducing the Risk and Treatment of #LungCancer, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Eggplant may have a potential and substantial effect in reduced risk and treatment of lung cancer, some scientists suggested.
Eggplant is a species of S. melongena with a deep purple color, belonging to the family Solanaceae and native to India, cultivated in southern and eastern Asia since prehistory.

Lung cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the tissues of the lung At the later stage, the cancerous cell may invade other healthy tissues and organs a distance away from the original site.

According to statistics, approximately 28,600 Canadians will be diagnosed with lung cancer representing 14% of all new cancer cases in 2017.

In the investigation of the eggplant bioactive phytochemical glycoalkaloids activity and risk of various types of malignant tumors, Dr. Friedman M found that derivatives of glycoalkaloids, α-solamargine, and α-solasonine demonstrated a strongly inhibited effect in the growth of the lung and other cancer cells in culture (in vitro) as well as tumor growth in vivo, involved some unknown signaling pathways.

More specifically, the investigation of solasodine, a naturally occurring aglycone of glycoalkaloid in eggplant (Solanum melongena) in human lung cancer cell line A549 showed that solasodine displays a significant effect in ameliorated cancer cell viability and initiated cell apoptosis through attenuating expression of mRNA level of matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2), MMP-9 which were found to be elevated in patients with lung cancer in compared to healthy subjects and extracellular inducer of matrix metalloproteinase (EMMPRIN), a cell surface glycoprotein which plays an important role in stimulated the production of several matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs).

Further differentiation, also indicated that the inhibitory property of solasodine by increased expression of a reversion-inducing cysteine-rich protein with kazal motifs (RECK) not only reduces the risk of RECK accelerated cancer cell proliferation but also exhibits initiation of irreversible growth cycle arrest through short hairpin of mRNA in the suppression of the RECK gene.

Additionally, injection of solasodine promoted cancer cell death and was also associated with the overexpression of tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1), a glycoprotein found in several tissues of organisms with function involved in the degradation of the extracellular matrix as mentioned above and TIMP-2, a member of the TIMP gene family with function as a metastasis suppressor.

According to the immunoblotting assays, the administration of solasodine is very effective in suppressing PI3K /Akt phosphorylation of lung cancer cells in the induction of cell proliferation.

PI3K /Akt phosphorylation plays critical roles in the regulation of many cellular processes including cell cycle, growth, apoptosis, and signal transduction pathways.

Alterations in phosphorylation pathways result in serious outcomes in the form of diseases, especially cancer.

Finally, solasodine decreased expression of microRNA-21 which has been found to be higher in more advanced malignancies, in the initiated early entry phase of cancer developing by stimulated production of RECK in accelerated cancer cell proliferation, thus decreasing the risk of cell invasion.

After taking into account all confounders, Dr. Shen KH, the lead author said, "The findings demonstrate an attractive therapeutic potential for solasodine in lung cancer anti-metastatic therapy".

Taken together, eggplant with abundant phytochemicals may be considered a functional food for attenuated risk and used in combination with standard medicine for the treatment of lung cancer.
