#Herbal #Coltsfoot #Extract Inhibits the Risk of #Tuberculosis (TB), According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

The lung is a vital organ located near the backbone on either side of the heart with major functions to inhale oxygen from the air to the bloodstream that nourishes the body cells and exhale carbon dioxide from the bloodstream.

Other functions of the lung are to maintain the right levels of pH, filter out blood clots, protect the heart against shock, infection, and speech.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a contagious disease caused by bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

The bacteria attacked the lung tissue, leading to the significantly reduced function of the lung in the inhaling and exhaling.

The disease is also found to cause major damage to other parts of the body.

According to statistics, 25% of the world's population is infected with TB. In 2016, 10.4 million people around the world became sick with the disease-inducing the death of 1.7 million people.

The most common signs and symptoms of TB are associated with reduced lung function, including coughing that lasts a long period of time, coughing up blood, chest pain, particularly in breathing or coughing, fatigue, fever, night sweats, and chills.

Some patients may also experience symptoms of unintended weight loss.

Conventionally, the length of treatment of TB depending on the severity of the disease takes longer compared to other infections with at least six months of antibiotics intake, including Isoniazid, Rifampin (Rifadin, Rimactane), and Ethambutol (Myambutol).

Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara) is a perennial herbaceous plant, genus Tussilago, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia. The herb has been used over thousands of years to treat asthma, various coughs, bronchial congestion, respiratory disorders, headaches and obstruction in the nasal passage, etc.

In finding a potential compound that processes antitubercular activity, researchers examined the effect of Arctium lappa and Tussilago farfara extracts for activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

In Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv, according to the tested analysis, the ethyl acetate extract of Tussilago farfara displayed antitubercular activity with a MIC of 62.5 μg/mL.

The anti-tuberculosis property of Tussilago farfara against the Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv was attributed to the compounds including mixture of β sitosterol/stigmasterol (4), trans-caffeic acid (7), kaempferol (8), quercetin (9), kaempferol-3-O-glucoside (10), loliolide (11), a (4:1) mixture of p-coumaric acid/4-hydroxybenzoic acid (12), p-coumaric acid (13). in the extract.

In compound comparison, the best anti-tuberculosis activity was observed in the p-coumaric acid (13) (MIC 31.3 μg/mL or 190.9 μM) alone and in a mixture with 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (12) (MIC 62.5 μg/mL).

Based on the findings, researchers aid, "The above results provide for the first time some scientific evidence to support, to some extent, the ethnomedicinal use of Arctium lappa and Tussilago farfara as traditional antitubercular remedies.".

Taken together, coltsfoot may be considered a remedy for the treatment of tuberculosis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Lycopene Processes Anti-Chemical and Natural Toxins Activities, Researchers Reveal

Kyle J. Norton

Natural toxins are toxic chemicals produced by living organisms with an aim to protect themselves from predators. Therefore, these types of toxins do not cause harm to the host but can be very deadly to other organisms if they are consumed.
The most common types of natural toxins produced by plants are alkaloids such as pyrrolizidine alkaloids and glycoalkaloids, cyanogenic glycosides, lectins, saponins, and antinutrients.

Chemicals toxins are chemicals or substances that are not only harmful to the environment but a hazard to human health if inhaled, ingested or absorbed through the skin.

The most common types of chemical toxins are inorganic compounds such as mercury and carbon monoxide, and organic compounds, such as methyl alcohol.

The Institute of Natural Medicine suggested that exposure to chemical and natural toxins may cause* Enzymes dysfunction, including antioxidant enzymes that prevent the free-radical damage that causes damage to protein, lipid, and cell DNA.
* Reduced mineral absorption that can induce bone disease.
* Damage to the organs, particularly in the detox organs, such as the liver and kidney

* Damage cell's DNA and modify genetic expressions of the host that initiates the onset of cancer.

* Alternation of the body hormones by inducing, inhibiting, mimicking, and blocking hormone production.

Lycopene is a phytochemical in the class of carotenoid, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.

With an aim to protect the body against environmental, occupational, and therapeutic toxins, researchers examined the lycopene anti-toxic agents activity.

High intake of lycopene administration has been effective in decreasing the risk of both natural toxins including mycotoxins, bacterial toxins, and chemical toxins including heavy metals, pesticides as well and herbicides.

Phytochemical carotenoids processed abundantly bioactive compound lycopene have also found to process antioxidative activity against long-term overexpression of free radicals, antiapoptotic activity against cancer cells, radical scavenging activity against the initiation of free radical chain reaction, and chelating activity against chemical toxins.

Furthermore, lycopene also played a critical role in the modulation of inflammatory pathways that facilitate the onset of protein, lipid, and cellular DNA damage.

Based on the results, researchers said, " This review summarizes available data from several recent studies about lycopene and its role against chemical and natural toxicants".

Taken altogether, lycopene found in carotenoids may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with chemical and natural toxins, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Betanin Increases the Expression of an Enzyme Associated with Detoxification Against the Onset of Liver Damages, Researchers FInd

Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal organ that not only filters the blood coming from the intestinal system but also protects our body against chemical and drug toxicity.

Additionally, the liver also produces cholesterol that plays an essential role in aiding digestion, producing vitamin D and steroid hormones, and building strong cell membranes.

Believe it or not, the liver also produces antioxidant enzymes that inhibit free radical oxidation and interact with the hormone insulin to store glucose in the form of glycogen.

Hepatic steatosis is a condition caused by the accumulation of fat in the liver. Liver steatosis can be classified into 2 types

* Alcoholic liver steatosis is caused by over-consumption of alcohol over time.

* Non-alcohol steatosis (NASH) is a condition of accumulation of excess fat in the liver in people who drink little or no alcohol. ... Non-alcohol steatosis is considered a major cause of liver scarring and cirrhosis.

The most common symptoms of liver steatosis are jaundice, abdominal swelling (ascites), enlarged blood vessels just beneath the skin's surface, enlarged breasts in men, enlarged spleen and red palms.

If you have some of the aforementioned symptoms, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

Conventionally, there is no effective treatment for liver steatosis. Weight loss and weight management through a combination of a healthy diet and exercise are the most recommendations.

Some researchers suggested that the rise of liver steatosis in the US may be correlated to the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past few decades.

Dr. Arisqueta L, the lead scientist wrote, "High-fat diet (HFD) feeding or leptin-deficient mice are extensively used as models resembling features of human nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)".

And, "The concurrence of experimental factors as fat content and source or total caloric intake leads to prominent differences in the development of the hepatic steatosis and related disturbances".

Betacyanins are phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.

In finding a natural pigment for the prevention and treatment of liver steatosis, researchers examined whether betanin (from natural pigments, a member of betacyanins) had anti-oxidant properties against paraquat-induced liver injury in Sprague-Dawley rats.

Paraquat injected intraperitoneally into rats to induce liver toxicity and randomly assigned to 4 groups: a control group, a paraquat group, and two groups received betanin at doses of 25 and 100mg/kg/day three days before and two days after administered paraquat.

Administration of betanin inhibited the elevated serum aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase levels of the paraquat rats.

Betanin treated group also enhanced the production of antioxidant enzymes that counter the overexpression of free radicals-induced oxidative stress.

Furthermore, the betanin-treated group also increased the expression of an enzyme associated with detoxification.

Moreover, liver mitochondrial damage caused by paraquat injection also was reduced by the administration of betanin.

In other words, all parameters associated with the onset of liver damage that causes steatosis to develop were decreased substantially in the animals treated with betanin than in those who received paraquat alone.

Based on the results, researchers after taking other factors into account wrote, "Betanin had a protective effect against paraquat-induced liver damage in rats. The mechanism of the protection appears to be the inhibition of CYP 3A2 expression and protection of mitochondria".

Taken altogether, betacyanins processed abundantly bioactive ingredient betanin may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of liver steatosis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of betacyanins in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Herbal #Turmeric's #Curcumin Exerts a Strong Stroke Preventive Property, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

A stroke is a medical condition caused by poor blood flow to the brain, leading to the death of the neurons.
Besides cancer and heart disease, stroke is the third leading cause of death in the US. According to the statistics, approximately 1/4 of all stroke victims die as a direct result of the stroke or its complications.

The causes of stroke are either associated with plaque build-up on the arteries, leading to reduced blood flow to the brain, depending on the location of an obstruction, or the breaking of small blood vessels in the brain.

In other words, strokes can be classified into 2 types
* Ischemic stroke is caused by a clot or other blockage within an artery which leads to the brain.
* Hemorrhagic stroke is caused by the vessel in the brain rupturing that resulting in blood leaking into the brain.

Stroke is caused by a number of factors. Epidemiological studies suggest high blood pressure, medical conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, smoking, age, gender ethnicity, and personal or family history of stroke are some of the prevalent risk factors.

Some researchers in the examination of the rise of stroke in North America suggested that stroke may be associated with the promotion of the Western diet over the past few decades.

The American Heart Association wrote, "Western" diets consisting of red and processed meats, refined grains, sweets, and desserts may be associated with a greater risk of stroke, according to a study published in this week's rapid access issue of Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association".

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
In finding a natural compound for the treatment of stroke prevention scientists evaluated the protective effects of curcumin, the best-known member, which is mainly extracted from turmeric's preventive effect on stroke.

The study included stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRsp) randomly divided into either a control group (n = 10, saline or curcumin (100 mg/kg/day)) or a curcumin group (n = 10) administrated daily.

According to the tested assays, the administration of curcumin significantly delayed the onset of stroke and increased the survival of SHRsp by decreasing the expression of ROS and improving endothelial-dependent relaxation of carotid arteries.

However, according to the RT-PCR and immunoblotting, curcumin showed no statistical significance in the presence of UCP2 inhibitor genipin by blocking the decrease of ROS and the increase of NO production.
Genipin is a chemical compound found in gardenia fruit extract.

In other words, in order for curcumin to exert its stroke-preventive activity, curcumin cannot be consumed together with gardenia fruit.

Additionally, in the study to examine the curcumin effect during the stroke, researchers found that curcumin encapsulated in exosomes, nano-vesicles (<200 nm), shows therapeutic effects in brain diseases, such as stroke.

Taken together, turmeric processed with a high amount of bioactive compound curcumin may be considered a supplement for the prevention of stroke, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Bromelain Promotes Proteins Associated with the Reduced Risk and Progression of Leukemia, Researchers Find

Kyle J. Norton

Leukemia is a medical and chronic condition that affects the blood and bone marrow associated with the production of immature white blood cells that can not function properly.
Leukemia can be classified into 2 types
A. Acute leukemia
Acute leukemia is a condition of the rapid increase in the number of extremely immature white blood cells that appear in the bloodstream and other parts of the body, including tissue and organs.

* Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) is a type of cancer caused by the abnormal growth of extremely immature lymphocytes by the bone marrow and/or lymphatic system. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common child form of leukemia, accounting for 80% of all cases.

* Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) is a cancer of the myelogenous lining caused by the rapid growth of abnormal granulocytes accumulated in the bone marrow, interfering with the normal blood cells.

B. Chronic leukemia
Chronic leukemia is a condition of the slow but still excessive build-up of relatively mature abnormal white blood cells.

* Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is a condition caused by the slow growth and spreading of a group of abnormal white blood cells called B-cell lymphocytes, which fight against infection in our body by producing antibodies.

* Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) is a condition caused by the slow growth and spreading of abnormal granulocytes.

The exact causes of leukemia are unidentified. Researchers do not know the exact factors that cause the alteration of cell DNA that promotes the abnormal growth of white blood cells.

However, they do know aging, family factors, males, smoking, long-term exposure to certain chemicals, chemo and radiation therapies, genetic propositions, and certain types of blood disorders are associated with the increased risk of the disease.

Leukemia shares all general symptoms with other types of cancer such as unintended weight loss, loss of appetite, gastrointestinal discomforts, and persistent fatigue accompanied by specific symptoms of bleeding or bruising, recurrent nosebleeds, tiny red spots in your skin, excessive sweating, and hight time bone pain or tenderness.

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.

With an aim to discover a potential compound or whole food for the treatment of leukemia, researchers investigated a panel of cancer cell lines with bromelain in the presence or absence of peroxidase.

Bromelain combined with peroxidase (BM-PR) showed significant inhibition of acute myeloid (K562) cell proliferation and altered the morphological features.

The combination not only exhibited pro-apoptosis against the cancer cell line but also interfered with the cell cycle division through cell cycle arrest.
BM-PR also increased the expression of intracellular ROS levels in the induction of cytotoxicity and altered the mitochondrial membrane potential, against the tested cancer cells.

According to the Western blot analysis, BM-PR increased the levels of proteins associated with the activity of proapoptosis and tumor suppression.

Compared to the treatment of bromelain, researchers said, "These results suggest that BM-PR from pineapple induces apoptosis better than the only bromelain in acute myeloid leukemia cells possibly via mitochondria-dependent pathway".

In CD44 cell surface proteins involved in leukocyte binding to endothelium and the metastatic spread of tumor cells, injection of bromelain inhibited the human leukemia Molt 4/8 cells growth by reducing CD44 receptor density.

The most active in reducing CD44 receptor density of bromelain was a half-maximal value of 1.9 mu g/ml and 2.3 mu g/ml.

Based on the findings, bromelain inhibited the progression of leukemia via the reduced CD44 receptor density.

Taken together, bromelain used alone or combined with other herbal medicines may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of leukemia, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Bilberry Extract and Yeast-Fermented Bilberries (FBE) Inhibit Genes Associated with the Risk of #Atherosclerosis, Researchers Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Atherosclerosis, one of the major causes of cardiovascular disease is a medical condition caused by the accumulation of plaque on the arterial wall. Over time, the condition can lead to narrowing the arteries or blocked arteries, leading to reduced oxygenated blood flow to the heart and other parts of the body.
Arteries are blood vessels that carry the oxygen-rich blood to the heart before passing it to the tissues and organs.

Plague is made up of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances found in the blood. In other words, cholesterol that cannot be returned to the liver for reuse may have a strong impact on inducing plaque accumulation.

People in the early stage of atherosclerosis are asymptomatic. However, over time, the continued buildup of plaque on the arterial wall can cause symptoms of chest pain or angina and shortness of breath. fatigue. confusion, due to a blockage or reduced blood flow.

Although there are many risk factors associated with the onset of atherosclerosis, an unhealthy lifestyle, particularly in people who follow the pattern of the Western diet has been found in many patients with the disease.

Dr. Matthias Nahrendorf, the lead scientist wrote, "Diet, exercise, stress, and sleep are receiving attention as environmental modifiers of chronic inflammatory diseases, including atherosclerosis, the culprit condition of myocardial infarction and stroke".

And, "Accumulating data indicate that psychosocial stress and a high-fat, high-cholesterol diet aggravate the cardiovascular disease, whereas regular physical activity and healthy sleeping habits help prevent it".

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant berry has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of atherosclerosis researchers evaluated a nutritional supplementation with a bilberry anthocyanin-rich extract (BE) in the atherosclerotic lesion development in apolipoprotein E-deficient (apoE⁻/⁻) mice.

In the early stage of atherosclerosis development in tested mice, BE significantly improved hypercholesterolemia associated with plaques built up without affecting the plasmatic antioxidant status.

According to the nutrigenomic analysis, BE modulated the expression of the gene involved in different cellular processes such as oxidative stress, inflammation, transendothelial migration, and angiogenesis, which lead to atherosclerosis development/protection.

In other words, BE enhanced the mechanisms involved in the preventive action of bilberry anthocyanin-rich extract against atherosclerosis.

In the development of atherosclerosis in apolipoprotein E-deficient mice (apo E(-/-)). Apo E(-/-) mice, researchers compared the efficacy of two bilberry extracts, one rich in anthocyanins extracted from untreated bilberries (BE) and a second one extracted from yeast-fermented bilberries (FBE).

According to the 16 weeks of a diet supplemented with 0.02% of either BE or FBE, both bilberry extracts led to significant inhibition of plaque development, without affecting the levels of oxidative stress parameters or lipid profiles.

These results strongly suggested that bilberry extract inhibited plaque development through other unknown mechanisms.

By comparative tests, fermentation generates new bioactive compounds FBE are more effective in attenuating progression of the atherosclerotic lesions compared to those of BE.

Taken together, bilberry may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis, pending the validation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Bromelain Inhibits Proteins Associated with an Increased Risk of #BreastCancer, Scientists Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Breast cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the breast tissue due to the alternation of DNA.
Most cases of breast cancer at the early stage start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of either the milk ducts (Ductal carcinoma) or the lobules (Lobular carcinoma) that supply the ducts with milk.

At this stage, the patient may first notice a painless lump in the breast or armpit most often discovered by herself or her partner.

However, some patients may also experience symptoms of nipple discharge (clear or bloody)
inverted or retracted nipple, scaly or pitted skin on nipple persistent tenderness of the breast and
unusual breast pain or discomfort.

At the advanced stage, besides experiencing symptoms shared commonly with other types of cancer, patients may also notice localized bleeding and severe pain due to the oversize that presses on nearby blood vessels and nerves.

According to the U.S. Breast Cancer Statistics, approximately, 1 in 8 U.S. women, or 12% will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of their lifetime.

In 2019, an estimated 268,600 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with 62,930 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer.

The 5 years survival rate of breast cancer at the early stage is close to 100%.

The causes of breast cancer are not identified. Gender, aging, genetic preposition, family history, never pregnant women, and smoking are some breast cancer prevalent risks.

Dr. Bhaskarapillai Binukuma, the lead scientist in the evaluation of the diet risk of breast cancer wrote, "Increased consumption of total fat and saturated fat were found to be positively associated with the development of breast cancer".

And, "A moderate inverse association between consumption of n-3 fatty acids and breast cancer risk and a moderate positive association between n-6 fatty acids and breast cancer risk were observed".

In other words, if you are a high-fat diet follower, your risk of breast cancer is increased substantially.

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient for the treatment of breast cancer, researchers examined the bromelain-functionalized multiple-wall lipid-core nanocapsules (Bro-MLNC-Zn) on breast cancer cell lines.

The complex used for the study was formed by a Zn-N chemical bond and a chelate with hydroxyl and carboxyl groups.

In human breast cancer cells (MCF-7), the complex at the nanocapsule surface showed an antiproliferative effect by maintaining its proteolytic activity.

Interestingly, Bro-MLNC-Zn showed a reduced dose at 160-fold to exert a similar effect compared to that of and bromelain solution.

Based on the results, researchers said, "The surface functionalization approach produced an innovative formulation having a much higher antiproliferative effect than the bromelain solution".

In order to reveal more information about bromelain anti-breast cancer activity, researchers investigated the possible synergistic cytotoxic effects of bromelain in combination with cisplatin on MDA-MB-231 human breast cancer cells.

Human MDA-MB-231 cells used in the study were treated with different concentrations (0.24-9.5 µM) of bromelain or cisplatin alone, as well as four different combinations.

According to the results of tested assays, single-agent treatment with cisplatin or bromelain decreases the viability of the MDA-MB-231 cells at 24 and 48 h in a dose- and time-dependent manner.

All combinations displayed synergistic effects against MDA-MB-231 cells at 48 h, particularly with combination 1 (bromelain 2 µM + cisplatin 1.5 µM).

Interestingly, combination 1 also was found to induce breast cancer cell death with a significant decrease in the levels of several apoptotic proteins but an increase in levels of the pro-apoptotic proteins compared with bromelain.

Taken together, bromelain used alone or combined with other herbal medicines may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
